What a hectic summer! The Olympics and Paralympics were a triumph. I think that even die hard non sporty people would have been impressed and I hope it will reap rewards in our youngsters taking more interest in keeping fit generally.
The 4 months between each magazine fly by in a flurry of activity and there have been more new developments since July. Many of you will know that for some years I have also run the Guildford area Grapevine. At the beginning of August I handed over to Vicky Onah, who is now the editor for that area. I wish her every success and she and I will be working closely together at all times. As a local publication, the aim is to promote businesses and services within this area. Businesses need your support! Please tell anyone you contact that you saw their name in the Grapevine-it’s important in these economically difficult times that advertising budgets are used wisely and this information helps us all. Share your home, share your life. The Surrey Shared Lives Service are looking for individuals or couples to become Shared Lives carers. This service offers adults with learning or physical disabilities, mental health needs or support needs due to their age, an opportunity to live in a home environment instead of residential care. It provides them with a level of independence and support where they’ll get a chance to participate in family and community life. Carers are paid between £45 and £80 per day for the service they provide in their own home. The Gruffalo competition In the last issue GLive ran a competition for tickets to see The Gruffalo live on stage in September. The response was fantastic with well over 100 entries. However over the period the competition ran (2 mths), 4 emails were received querying the answer to the question. GLIVE was contacted immediately to check this and they confirmed that they were sure MOUSE was the correct answer and neither of the other 2 animal options figured in the story. It would appear there are different versions and narratives and I relayed this to the readers who queried it, who I hope were reassured. Due to the high number of entrants, all of which answered MOUSE, the competition remained valid. Winners to this and all other competitions can be found on both the Mid Surrey and the Guildford area websites.

A winter treat! Perfect for children who love dabbling with cooking! Pumpkin & Cranberry Muffins This is a delicious and seasonal idea for a muffin recipe which makes good use of all the pumpkins we are now seeing around. If you have not eaten pumpkin before, this is a good recipe to start with. There are just a few simple steps to follow and it is a good recipe for you to make with children who will love mixing the batter with a spoon, as well as mashing up the pumpkin. Pumpkin & Cranberry Muffins :- Makes 12 muffins:- Ingredients as follows:225g self raising flour 225g caster sugar 1tsp bicarbonate of soda Pinch of salt 1/2tsp ground cinnamon 1/2tsp ground nutmeg 1/2tsp allspice 60ml water 2 medium eggs beaten 120ml veg/sunflower oil 100g dried cranberries (or any dried fruit) 200g cooked pumpkin (I baked chunks of de-seeded pumpkin in a baking tray covered in foil at 200degrees for 40/45 minutes. Then scooped out the flesh and mashed it up) Method :1. In a large bowl mix together the flour, salt, bicarb of soda, spices & sugar. 2. Line your muffin tin with cases. 6. Divide the mixture between the muffin cases and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Notes :You could also use which spices you like, taking out any you may not have to hand. Ground ginger would also work well. The muffins freeze well. If you take them out in the morning they would be ready to eat as part of a lunchbox within a couple of hours. Muffins are best eaten on the day they are made.
