RESIDENCE ANALYSIS

ANALYSIS OF THE EXISTING HOUSE PLAN It was a task to measure each detail of the house and draft it. The layout of spaces vary different from place to place because spaces are used differently everywhere. It gave an idea of measurements and spaces. It helped us to find out the standards of furniture and to compare the contrast in our homes.

ZONING

SPACE USAGE SEMI PRIVATE

PRIVATE

MOST USED

ONCE/ TWICE IN A DAY

SEMI PUBLIC RARELY USED BUFFER NO ONE USES MY ROOM EXCEPT ME. BEING ON THE SECOND FLOOR MAKES IT MORE PRIVATE

USED BY OUTSIDERS AS WELL AS MEMBERS THUS CONSIDERED SEMI PRIVATE

USED EXTENSIVELY BY SERVICE PROVIDERS

BUFFER ZONE CONNECTING TO DIFFERENT SPACES

COMMONLY USED THE DRAWING ROOM IS AT THE CORNER: DARK AND DINGY THUS MAKING IT THE LEAST USED SPACE KITCHEN AND BUFFER AREA HAS A LOT OF MOVEMENT THROUGHT THE DAY ME AND MY BROTHER JUST USE OUR ROOM AS WE ARE ALL DAY OUT . THE GURUDWARA IS USED FOR WORSHIPPING GOD WHICH IS VISITED BY EACH MEMBER ONCE IN A DAY

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SPACE THIS FLOOR IS HIGHLY ASYMETRICAL BUT PROVIDES SUFFICIENT CLEARANCE TOO..

THERE IS A GREAT BALANCE OF THE POSITVE AND NEGATIVE SPACES ON THIS FLOOR.

THIS FLOOR IS ASYMETRIC: ITS LOADED WITH FURNITURE AND CREATES CLEARANCE AS A QUESTION AT SOME POINTS TOO.

AXIS

THE TRANSITION FROM ONE PLACE TO THE OTHER IS REALLY SYSTEMATIC.

A STRONG LINEAR AXIS IS BEEN FOLLOWED.

THE BUFFER ZONE IN THE CENTER CONNECTS TO ALL THE SPACES AROUND.

ACCESS HERE SHOWN IS THE PROXIMITY OF TWO MAJOR SPACES (MASTER BEDROOM AND KITCHEN)OF THE HOUSE TO THE REST OF THE PLACES

THE MASTER BEDROOM IS TOO FAR FROM THE KITCHEN BUT QUITE CLOSE TO THE SIBLINGS ROOM. THE KITCHEN IS NO WHERE CLOSER TO MY AS WELL AS MY BROTHER’S ROOM MASTERBEDROOM BEING ON THE FIIRST FLOOR HELPS IN MAINTAING A LEVEL OF PRIVACE BUT MAKES IS A BIT FAR FROM THE ENTERANCE OF THE HOUSE. SINCE THE KITCHEN IS ACCESSED BY PART TIME SERVANTS TOO, HAVING IT CLOSER TO THE ENTERANCE HELPS IN MAINTAING THE ZONE TYPOLOGY KITCHEN IS IHAVING A CLEAR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DINING SPACE AS WELL AS THE FORMAL DRAWING

NATURAL DAYLIGHT AVAILABLE THE PLEASANT VEIW IS AVAILABLE FROM THE GROUND FLOOR AS ANOTHER ADJACENT HOUSE BLOCKES THE SITE FOR REST OF THE FLOORS

VIEWS & VENTILATION THESE TWO SIDES OF THE HOUSE ARE COMPLETELY BLOCKED DUE TO ADJACENT RESIDENCE APPARTMENTS THUS HAVE NO VIEW FROM THIS SIDE

GREAT VENTILATION CLEAR VIEW AVAILABE

ADEQUATE VENTILATION

INFERENCES SWINGS OF THE CABINET COLLIDE WHEN ACCESED AT THE SAME TIME THE CABINET PLACE IS TOO LOW+ IN THE CORNER CREATING INCONVINIENCE.

THE TABLE PLACE IS TOO WIDE COMPARED TO THE SPACE AVAILABLE THUS ENDS UP GETTING BANGED EITHER WHEN THE DOOR IS OPENED FULLY OR THE UPBOARD IS ACCESSED. THE GLASSDOOR OF THE BATHROOM ENDS UP BANGING INTO THE BED EACH TIME WHEN OPENED FULLY

THE POWDER ROOM IS TOO SMALL WHERE AS THE DOOR IS AS BIG AS IT ONE OF THE ADJACENT CREATING CLEARANCE ISSUES.

THE ONE SEATER KEPT HERE TO SIT IS PLACED IN THE CENTER OF CUPBOARD AND THE LEGDE WALL NOT GIVING ENOUGH CLEARANCE.

HANDREST OF BOTHE THE SOFAS COLLIDE THE DOOR BANGS INTO THE HANDREST OF THE SOFA WHEN OPENED FULLY THE TABLE IS SLIGHTLY BIG COMPARED TO THE SPACE AVAILABLE THUS THERE ISNT SUFFIENT SPACE TO PLACE THE SIXTH CHAIR OF THE SET.

WOODEN CONSOLE KEPT HERE LEAVES LESS SPACE FOR THE PATH.

MOVEMENT

THE COMMON PATH SHARED BY ALL MEMBERS WHILE ACCESING ONE SPACE TO THE OTHER IS BEEN DISPLAYED.

OBSERVED THAT A VERY STRONG PATH IS BEEN FOLLOWED AS THE SPACED PLACED AROUND AND THE ORIENTATION PROVIDES DIRECTION.

FORM AND SPACE TOO MUCH OF FURNITURE AT CERTAIN PLACES WHERE ITS NOT REALLY REQUIRED MAKES THE SPACE LOOK TOO HEAVY.

BALANCE OF FURNITURE IN THE MASTER BEDROOM MAKES IT LOOK CALM .

LARGE SOFA SET WHITE AN ANTIQUE SHOWCASE CUPBOARD + THREE GLASS TABLES MAKES THE DRAWING ROOM SUFFOCATED.

SYMMETRY & ASYMMETRY ALL THE THREE FLOORS HAVE AN OVERLAPPING TRANSITION SPACE/ BUFFER ZONE WHICH GUIDES THE PATH.

ZONING 14

There is a clear division of public, private and semi private spaces. The private areas are segregated by the semi private region between them thus creating a sense of privacy and encouraging interaction at the same time.

AXIS AND SPACE There are two main axis running through the house. They act as guiding paths which are connected by a vertical axis. Transformation of space Cuboid‐subtractive volumes Cuboidal compositions Subtraction of forms satisfies functional needs‐penetration, continuity and circulation

Structural Grid

Circulation and Movement

Views and Corners ‐Well connected spaces ‐Integrated according to the purpose ‐Radial as well as linear path.

LIGHT Openings at the corners and plane creates a physical barrier yet lets the outside come alive into the inside space West of the foyer is a generous sky‐ lit double height volume gently bathed with natural light via wall mounted narrow as well as cubical skylights

‐Determines volumes, ‐Allows interior spaces to look outward ‐Reveals surfaces as planes

The kitchen, dining and the living area have an open layout which creates oneness of space.

The powder room is situated in the semi private area near the kitchen which is a bit far from the formal drawing room.

These kitchen is very conveniently connected to the store as well as the utility area creating a very compact service area.

The placement of the kitchen and dining downstairs and bedrooms upstairs may prove to be of inconvenience to its frequent users.

Clearance in operational furniture and circulation

Insufficient clearance for a person to access the wc.

The Bedroom entrance door is prone to hit the table behind.

The circulation of the space is axial i.e. the circulation is governed by the axis and is properly planned. The furniture piece reduces the passage width making it narrower and thus creating hindrance.

Opposite furniture placed too close; insufficient clearance

The placement of furniture is not really aligned to any thing creates chances of insufficient clearance.

All the spaces are synchronized well with each other.

Organization Interlocking of spaces that eases the usability

An interesting element in the given space is that the entrances have been planned in a way that there is a buffer space provided.ie we do not directly enter into the main space.

Positive and Negative spaces ‐Balanced placement of furniture ‐Harmonious place ‐Ample space for clearance

Wall Structure

Column Brick wall Partitions

‐Linear exterior façade ‐Double height: to exaggerate the height ‐ Geometric cubic frame structure

Wooden vertical cantilevers for aesthetics as well as balancing the form

Angular cantilevers acting as an exterior highlight

Materials Used Brick The major component used to build the complete apartment and is left exposed at most of the place in interior as well as exteriors

Italian marble Used for flooring

Cement Brick wall treated with cement

Wood Core furniture and exterior vertical cantilevers

Glass Used to maintain a connection with the exterior and retailing transparency.

PROJECT BRIEF Task: To resolve the existing problems faced & provide a better residence design for their family to reside in.

MASTER BEDROOM It is a well designed room but lacks a view and accommodates my younger brother too due to supervision which is slightly inconvenient. A designed layout retaining existing features but providing another space for the younger brother to stay under supervision.

KITCHEN A medium sized , closed from all sides kitchen lacking a working triangle and relationship with the drawing room. A well organized kitchen with a working triangle and a easy relationship with the formal drawing as well as the dining.

The existing places along with the problems faced with proposed solutions ELDER BROTHERS ROOM A space with all different genres of material and lacks a bathroom around it. A thoughtful space with designed layout and a theme along with an attached bathroom.

GRANDMOTHERS ROOM A well ventilated room with heavy tv cabinet and an attached bathroom with clearance issues. A well thought off room with a great view, minimalistic tv unit and an easy to used with adequate clearances bathroom.

DRAWING ROOM A moderate sized room closed from all the sides with just one window opening and heavy furniture. A well designed formal drawing room with adequate amount of furniture and required degree of enclosure

DINING SPACE Closed from three sides with a heavy rectangular table lacking enough clearance space. A different shape dining table at an interactive place without least degree of enclosure required. GURUDWARA It is a well designed space with enough space to accommodate 50 people at one time but lacks a beautified entrance with a small water space to wash feet and hands. It even lacks a view. A designed layout incorporating the existing features but with enhancing the view of site and creating a provision to wash feet and a washbasin for hands.

The Current Proximity Chart depicts the relation amongst spaces. Few spaces are not meant to be in close/in relation to each other but it cannot be altered.

PROXIMITY CHART EXISTING

The Desired Proximity Chart tries to mainly overcome the relation which is needed and which is not needed based on the current proximity chart.

PAPER MODEL WITH WINDOW CUT OUTS AND HEIGHTS OF THE ELEVATIONS IT HELPED US UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHAT WE HAD VISUALLY IMAGINED AND WHAT ACTUALLY IT IS. MANY OPENINGS AND PLACEMENT OF OPENING WAS BETTER UNDERSTOOD WHEN SEEN IN ELEVATIONS. IT HELPED US DECIDE AND THINK WHETHER WE WERE SURE OF ALL OPENINGS.

Decisions made after the paper model: ‐Windows on the north facing side of the residence ‐Height of the partition of the formal drawing and the family lounge ‐Width of the window kitchen ‐View of the external façade ‐Opening for the bathroom ventilation ‐Partition of the wardrobe closet b/w the siblings room ‐Relationship b/w the opening of the ground and the first floor
