FROM THE

FIELD REFLECTIONS AND PAINTINGS SPANISH 3

“Real education should consist of drawing the goodness and the best out of our own students. What better books can there be than the book of humanity? -Cesar Chavez

Bienvenido! I am pleased to present a series of paintings my Spanish 3 class completed for our school raised garden bed project. Our theme was inspired on Cesar Chavez fight for better work conditions for farmers. The class paintings were based on the extreme work conditions today and how students can bring awareness to this current issue that affects entire families, including children, through their paintings.

No Más! The title of our painting is “¡No Más!”, because the farmers have no rights and they want no more of it. The theme of the painting is equality and freedom for the workers. The primary focus of ¡No Más! is the farmer with a scythe in his right hand, while the background is the plantation he works. The scythe represents the work of all of the farmers without rights. The fact that the worker has no face is to represent that he, and the other farmers, do not have representation in the government or agrarian system. His blood stands for the sacrifice the farmers make in order to make small wages for their families. Lastly, the dirt on the farmer represents his struggle through his work, how much he has to do in order to earn so little wages.

Expectation and Reality The title of our painting is “Expectation and Reality. The theme is the work conditions. Our painting has three symbols. The first symbol is the dark sky, which represents the sadness of the child. The second symbol is the field. It represents the hard work of the child workers. The third symbol is the painting itself. The painting represents the contrast between the expectation of the child and the reality of the child. The background contains the dark sky, the rain, and the sun. The foreground contains the boy, the field, and the school. We chose to make this painting to show the hard work of the immigrant child workers.

SAD DAYS The title of the painting is "Sad Days." The theme of the painting is harsh working conditions and the reason is to create awareness. In the foreground there are rows of crops that extend to the horizon. In the background is the skyline and clouds. In the painting there are three symbols, the horizon, the clouds and field. The horizon symbolizes the new beginning for working children. Clouds symbolize sadness that has passed because of the extreme working conditions. Finally, the field symbolizes the work has been done by the workers.

THE EYE OF RAIN The title of the painting is “The Eye of Rain, and the theme of the painting is sad and struggling. The painting is abstract. In the background, is the eye in the sky, la lluvia, y el cielo. In the foreground are the very sad workers. The first symbol is the people. They represent the severe working conditions. The rain represents the sadness of the workers. The eye represents that their struggles are hidden.
