TIDBITS
T
Winter Bits
he photo above, taken by Cara Grimshaw, is of a horse being pampered at the Royal Winter Agricultural Fair in Toronto recently. This photo caught my attention for many reasons, and I felt it had to be my Tidbits photo for the December Gaitpost.
Winter Having done most of my growing up in Ontario, the Royal is a sure sign of winter for me. I will never forget the awe I had as a child, wandering the aisles and the barns at the Royal, and living off the atmosphere. Looking at this photo, I can feel the steam coming off this horse’s back, and smell the wet horse/shampoo/liniment air in the wash stalls. I remember the magical heat, going into the barns from the snow outside, and it was like entering another world. It WAS entering another world, and one I have done my best to stay in ever since. 8

Connection As this horse closes his eyes and lets his groom wash his face, I can hear what the groom is murmuring to the horse, feel the horse start to drop his head as he acquiesces, and recognize that wet sleeve feeling. We have all been there, caring for our horses after a performance, knowing that the work doesn’t begin and end in the ring, but in the stall, in the washrack, and in the tackroom. That connection that comes from having such an incredibly beautiful animal dependent on you for everything, and yet knowing they don’t have to do anything they don’t want to, really, when it comes down to it. They do it for us. They Are All Stars Yes, this horse may be one of the best at the Royal, but this photo recognizes that all our horses are stars, that all horses have the same needs, the same wants, the same affection. We

could all be the subjects of very similar photos, our horses every bit as special, all big stars. Many Thanks Thank you, Cara, for the lovely photos you have provided us in the past year. It’s a true gift you have. Thank you, readers, for joining us on our journey with horses, and thank you, horses, for providing so much inspiration, love, and gratitude. The Gaitpost wishes everyone a happy, peaceful Christmas, and we hope the horses get as much of your time as possible this busy season. Horses are family. We do it for them.

This year, the Hall of Fame debuted the new category of Groom to pay tribute to the hard-working individuals behind the scenes whose dedicated care for their equine charges plays an integral role in the hunter and jumper industry. Also new was the creation of the Equitation Horse category, which honoured the accomplishments of Glen Owen, a horse that carried many riders to success including Canada’s own Laura Tidball Balisky in the 1980 ASPCA Maclay Medal Final at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Elizabeth Bordeaux was inducted into the category of Builder (Individual) in recognition of her countless hours of dedicated volunteer service with the national sport federation, not the least of which was acting as the Chair of the Jump Canada Board for six years. A veteran of Olympic, World Equestrian, and Pan American Games competition, Hugh Graham was inducted in the category of Rider, and enjoyed recounting his long and storied career with the audience, which included many of his long-time friends and connections.

The Countdown Has Begun for Omaha’s First World Professional Sports Championship Spectators gathered in Omaha’s Turner Park on Sunday, November 6 to begin the countdown to Omaha’s first World Cup competition — the 2017 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping & FEI World Cup Dressage Finals hosted by the Omaha Equestrian Foundation. A countdown clock was unveiled with the help of Omaha’s Mounted Patrol unit in Turner Park at Midtown Crossing, set in the heart of the city. The free event featured pony rides for children and a Show Jumping competition between two noted Omaha equestrians, Dan Urban and his sister-in-law Danee Urban, both trainers at Quail Run Horse Centre in Elkhorn. The FEI World Cup Finals will attract the world’s best horses and riders in two Olympic disciplines to the CenturyLink Center March 29-April 2, 2017. Omaha won the right to host the World Cup, beating out London, Hong Kong and s’Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. It is the first time Omaha has hosted a World Cup, and is the first professional world sports championship held in the city. Riders are qualifying now for the right to compete, and are expected to represent at least 25 different countries. More
than 60,000 visitors are expected to come to Omaha for the World Cup, and the event is projected to have an economic impact on the city of as much as $50 million. Isabell Werth and Weihegold Old new world Dressage number one Germany’s Isabell Werth and Weihegold Old are now top of the world Dressage rankings thanks to their stellar win at the FEI World Cup Dressage in Lyon (FRA), where Werth produced a personal-best Freestyle score of 90.09. The 47-year-old athlete and her 11-year-old mare, who won team gold and individual silver at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, now top the world Dressage rankings with 2869 points, ahead of Kristina Bröring-Sprehe (GER) and her 15-year-old Hanoverian stallion Desperados FRH (2,813 points) who had held the lead since February this year. Great Britain’s Carl Hester and Nip Tuck, who placed second at the FEI World Cup Dressage in Lyon last week, after winning team silver in Rio, have now jumped into fifth (2,448 points) behind fourth-placed Laura Graves (USA) and Verdades (2,462 points), and Dorothee Schneider (GER) and Showtime FRH (2,679 points) in third.

Polo On Vancouver Island Story & Photos by Sue Ferguson 14
December 2016
O
ne of the hidden gems of equestrian sports on Vancouver Island is polo. Although often referred to as the “Game of Kings” and considered to be exclusively for the wealthy, the Victoria Polo Club is as unpretentious as it gets. This club is simply brimming with hospitality, and members go out of their way to be helpful and encouraging. This season, the club members generously offered their horses and coaching (for free) to anyone who wanted to come out and learn about polo. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, pre-game warm-ups called “slow chukkas” were held. Be-

ginner riders were coached (at a walk and a trot) by the more experienced players. One did not need to be a member of the club in order to participate. The club’s goal was to attract new members and to share their love of the sport with others. The facility and fields are located on Wallace Drive in Central Saanich and games are played on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings from May until the end of September (depending on weather). There is plenty of room for trailers alongside the field, as well as parking and full facilities for spectators. www.gaitpost.com
Polo is a game that can be played by men and women and just about every age of rider. Currently, the youngest rider in the club is 10 years old and coincidentally, his grandfather is the oldest at 75. Polo ponies are often “off the track” thoroughbreds, followed by quarter horses, but other breeds are used as well. The preferred height is between 15 and 16hh, but here on the island, people are encouraged to bring their horses out and give it a try. The island polo story really begins when two veterinarians, Drs. Bill and Barbara Powell moved to Vancouver Island in 1961. I met with Barbara Powell recently and spent the afternoon talking about the history of the Vancouver Island Polo Club. She and Bill were visiting the island and discovered a piece of property for sale off of Island View Road. When they saw the view of Mount Baker and the beach below, they fell in love, bought the property, moved here and never left. Bill was one of the most highly ranked polo players in Canada and the couple had traveled extensively as he competed around the globe. He and Barbara lived the polo lifestyle and Bill was headlined alongside famous people such as Prince Charles, Baron Elie De Rothschild and the Maharaja of India. After moving to the island, the couple purchased 12 acres in the valley below from the Mitchell family, and with the help of friends they set to blasting rock, leveling ground and building a polo field. The land was seeded with Bermuda grass and they put up some paddocks and shelters, and the “Vancouver Island Polo and Riding Club” was on its way. Word spread quickly around the island and riders started to show up. Over the next three years, the club grew to about 16 players. The events received a lot of press and drew in crowds of spectators. The field gained a reputation as the best playing field in the Pacific North West and other clubs from Washington and Vancouver would

Polo continued from page 15 leave their ponies there for weeks at a time. The grooms would stay with the ponies and the owners would fly in on weekends for the matches. Every Thanksgiving, to show appreciation for the support from the families, the club hosted a “Three Way Event” which was comprised of Dressage, Stadium Jumping and Cross Country. The cross country course was quite long and went through the Island View Beach trails. Remnants of the course can be found to this day. As the club’s popularity grew, a “Social Membership” was created for non-players who loved to come out and support the club. It cost $25.00 a year to join and members were entitled to a marked parking spot and “tea” on Sundays. Soon “Polo Teas” became a tradition. Many of the women would arrive in fancy dress and hats. Two staunch supporters were Hilda Hale and Joan Dale from Victoria. They ensured that lemon cakes and cucumber sandwiches were at every tea. If they could not make it, they arranged delivery. 16
December 2016
Before his passing in 2003, Bill was asked what he felt was his life’s greatest achievement. His reply had nothing to do with his life as an international competitor, nor his work as a veterinarian, but rather, he said that his greatest achievement was “creating the socials and giving retired people a pleasant Sunday afternoon “. During this time, another local rider, Steve Mann went down to Indio, California (which had become a very popular winter playing destination) and witnessed polo being played on a much larger scale. Thoroughly inspired, he returned home and purchased 25 acres on Wallace Drive and developed the huge field and facility we see today. After the Powell’s field was closed, the new location on Wallace Drive in Central Saanich opened as the Victoria Polo Club. Today the club has around 15 members (playing and social). The season starts in May when the field is dry. At the end of every season the club holds the Lt. Governor’s Cup and many teams come over from the mainland and up from

Washington to compete in the year-end event. Last year, Deborah and Derek Wolstenholme (Canadian Ambassador to the International Federation of Polo) hosted the first Federation of Polo Event ever held in Canada. This extremely prestigious event drew competitors in from as far away as Iran, Costa Rica, Switzerland, the USA and the mainland. It was a huge honour to be held here on the island. Even though the club can occasionally host some higher profile events, they remain humble and down to earth. They feel it is important for people to know that this is more of a fun club and that really is affordable to be a member and play. The club is more than willing to help people get their start by way of loaning equipment, coaching and loaning their ponies for the slow chukkas. I spoke to one of the players, Matthew McNeill about how he got his start in polo. He told me that when he was young, he used to tag along with Murray Farmer as a groom. He’d help out where he could, pony the horses, and eventually,
th

he started to play. He has been riding with Murray and playing now for five years. Matthew’s enthusiasm and love for polo and the club is quite apparent. He describes the club as one big family who wants everyone to do the best they can. “It’s a team thing and it doesn’t matter who scores a goal; you’re just happy because that person had a really good game”. “It’s about riding for the sake of riding and having fun. It’s about hanging out with good people and celebrating a good afternoon in the sun with the horses. It doesn’t matter where you go, everyone treats you as an equal, and whether you are a groom, spectator or player, the atmosphere is easy going and laid back”. In true island style, the Victoria Polo Club truly exudes a sense of camaraderie and friendship. They may be a small club but they are big on generous spirit and things that matter the most. The club’s website is; www.victoriapolo.com or FB: Victoria Polo Club. If you would like more information please contact Frank van Veggel; fvv@uvic.ca.

oetis has updated its EQStable app to include a new equine weight calculator to help make accurate deworming and medication dose calculations simple. Users will find the weight calculator within the main menu of the EQStable app as well as in a quick link when entering their horse’s information. “Through the EQStable app, horse owners are able to access equine health information in the palm of their hands in order to provide the best possible care for their horse,” said Sally Amtmann, Senior Equine Marketing Manager, Zoetis. “The inclusion of the weight calculator advances the app to help horse owners provide accurate deworming treatments to their horses and assist in preventing parasite resistance.” Treatment doses for dewormers and many medications are based on the weight of the horse. If you underdose your horse when deworming, you could be contributing to the development of parasite resistance. The updated EQStable app is available for free at the Apple App Store. Additional features of the EQStable app include: • An Individualized Deworming questionnaire to help horse owners determine their horse’s parasite risk profile and create a deworming plan to meet their horse’s unique needs. • Calendar reminders for deworming, vaccinations, farrier visits, dental exams as well as events and trips. • Track My Ride: Allows riders to track and save their rides with a ride history log. Riders can name each route and specify the horse they rode and share their ride with friends on Facebook. • TheHorse.com News: Lists the latest equine

e had to make a last effort to save Giotto, our 18-year-old Hanoverian. When he was imported in 2007 he had some mild health issues, but over the years he steadily declined, despite the efforts of our vets. By November, 2015, we were out of options and he was obviously no longer enjoying life. That’s when I started researching how the digestive system works: what it needs to be healthy, and how to rejuvenate damaged cells in order to absorb nutrients. Then I started researching into organic whole foods that provide the essential nutrients to support

these functions, and that could possibly reverse existing damage. In early December, I started testing some foods on him a bit at a time. Interestingly, he was eager to eat them. My house smelled of dehydrating vegetables for months, my dining room was full of ingredients and recipes, but it was so worthwhile, as G began greeting me with nickers at feed time. Within a week, his tummy was settling down. Within 3 weeks, G had some light back in his

I was pretty excited to see some positive results, so researched some more, and fine-tuned the recipe. By the end of two months, G was looking so much better and his tummy was almost 100%. By six months he was full of beans, bright-eyed and enjoying life again! During this time, a few friends saw the changes in him and wanted to try it on their horses. a trial study. Horse after horse improved. Within days to weeks, most tummy/diarrhea issues were gone, hives and irritable skin relieved, negative behaviours gone, soft and supple under saddle, and all relaxed and happy horses and owners. The results were undeniable. The demand was growing, so we knew this product had to be shared. Further lab testing and product approvals were submitted, and the hard work began! And so G’s Formula came to life. As horse owners, we all know how delicate the equine GI tract is, so it is essential that we keep it healthy. Current research shows that up to 70% of the horse’s immunity depends on a healthy and functional gastro-intestinal tract. When horses have suppressed immunity due to cellular damage, other health problems will arise. At G’s Organic Solutions, we have just one mission: to provide an affordable, organic, nonGMO digestive aid to improve the health of horses. Our reward is the daily feedback we receive, and the joy in owners’ voices when they call to tell us how fabulously their horses are doing.

im Ernes, Dutch national team coach and FEI 5* Dressage judge, has passed away after a battle against cancer. He was 58. His proudest moments during six years as national team coach came at last year’s FEI European Championships in Aachen, when the Netherlands took team gold and individual bronze, and at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, when they claimed team and individual silver and individual bronze. But these were just two in a long list of successes that threw the spotlight on Wim Ernes’ role as a highly successful and admired national coach. His efforts to improve the quality of riding and level of judging is also well known, and judging at the London 2012 Olympic Games, three FEI World Cup Dressage Finals and at the FEI European Championships 2007 in Turin (ITA) www.gaitpost.com
were also major career highlights. When he was promoted to an FEI 5* judge in January 2008 he was one of the youngest ever to join the elite circle at that time. Wim Ernes was also very involved in the breeding side of the industry, chairing the KWPN Stallion Dressage Selection Committee for three years until November 2015, having previously worked extensively within the Committee for five years before taking over as Chair. “Wim possessed the ability to connect people to work together and create an atmosphere where everyone felt at home,” High Performance Director and Secretary General of the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation (KNHS) Maarten

The FEI extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Wim Ernes, to the Royal Dutch Equestrian Federation and the global equestrian community. TRYON (USA) TO HOST FEI WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES 2018 The FEI World Equestrian Games 2018 will be held at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina (USA) from September 10–23, 2018. The FEI Bureau unanimously agreed that the Games should be awarded to Tryon, meaning that the FEI’s flagship event remains in North America, following the withdrawal of Bromont (CAN) earlier this year. The original dates for the Games (August 12–26) have been changed following two scientific studies commissioned by the FEI which stated that climatic conditions would be significantly more favourable in North Carolina during September, particularly from a horse welfare perspective. The FEI also looked at date clashes with other fixtures on the FEI Calendar to ensure the optimum timeslot for the 2018 Games. “We are very pleased to announce Tryon as the host of the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018,” FEI President Ingmar de Vos said. “The Tryon team submitted a really impressive bid and we have every confidence in the organizing committee. It’s a truly spectacular venue and almost all the necessary infrastructure for our eight disciplines is already in place. We are looking forward to a fantastic celebration of top level sport as all the disciplines come together to crown their world champions at the Games in two years’ time.” “We are thrilled with this news and thank the FEI Bureau for having faith in us and entrusting us with the honour of hosting this prestigious event,” Mark Bellissimo said. The FEI World Equestrian Games 2018 were previously awarded to Bromont (CAN), but a lack of secure funding led to mutual agreement between the FEI and the Canadian Comité Orwww.gaitpost.com

Delegates at the conference were shown the latest research about concussions, including the definition of what a concussion is, and presentations about technologies and biomarkers that could aid on-site medical staff to diagnose a concussion near the field of play.

Reflection on the Jo Hinnemann Dressage Symposium at Highpoint Equestrian Centre in Langley, BC. Story by Uta McNamara
I
t doesn’t get much better than this — as soon as the dates and venue were announced, the clinic was filled. For some of the participants, it was their first time, for others a repeat of instructions with Jo Hinnemann, who is one of the few Reitmeisters in Germany. Some riders attended clinics with him years ago when he was the Canadian Dressage Coach, and some others more recently when competing in Southern California. The caliber and quality of horses has improved tremendously. I had the privilege to attend the clinic in the eighties, and as far as I remember it was the only time he came to the West Coast. At that time, his job was to scout for talented horses and riders who would have the potential to represent Canada one day. None of the horses from that era made it, but riders like Leslie Reid, Leonie Bramall, Nancy McLaughlin, and Gina Smith (to name a few from Western Canada) went on to represent Canada at Olympic, World Equestrian, and Pan-Am Games. www.gaitpost.com
New faces and much more talented horses have entered the scene since then. This clinic was well-attended, mainly by professionals and their talented Prix St George and Grand Prix Dressage horses. Participants were well turned out, focused, and pleasant to watch. Horses were obedient and fit to work at their respective levels. Most of them competed the weekend prior to the clinic in the Regional Dressage Finals at Thunderbird Showpark. Starting on day one of the clinic, Jo watched each horse go around the arena a couple of times before beginning to teach. When he looked at each pair, it seemed as if he saw their potential. No doubt he was determined to develop that potential in the following two days of the clinic. His approach was very horse-friendly and the results were tremendous. On day two, the horses looked like different horses, showing more engagement, more self carriage, more elevation with more air time, and athletic expression. The transformation and progression was phenomenal. His arsenal of exercises seemed limitless. Suitable and feasible for every horse, the execution of their movements improved. It reminded me of Dietrich von Hopffgarten’s philosophy and vision when helping us with the training of our horses. Only when the horses were relaxed, supple and swinging through the back, did Jo ask for more collection, self-carriage, lightness of the forehand, more elevation/airtime, and more and more expression. Expression and airtime were the key to strive for. Horses seemed to respond well

There was also a conversation in regards to the high scores that we see now. Stephen said that he believes that part of the reason for this is that the quality of horses has improved and that there is more of them. It was a great evening hearing about the Olympics from the judge’s perspective. The Victoria-Saanich CADORA Society and the beautifully decorated Bonita Stables hosted the symposium on September 24 & 25. There were 16 horse/rider combinations of all levels, from Training to FEI Intermediate A. Well done to them for riding in front of 80+ auditors. Stephen Clarke has a calm quiet way about him. Under his watchful eye, the riders were encouraged to warm their horses up by focusing on stretching, suppleness and getting the required reactions. It’s a lovely way to allow them to work in as they normally do. The horses were super and most of them managed to settle in. Then the

real work began! With so many varied combinations, there was lots to watch and learn about. Once they were sufficiently warmed up, it was into a working outline. That outline was dependent on the horse’s level of training. Stephen was quite clear that the poll needed to be the highest point and the horse goes to the contact. Lessons included improving adjustability and reactions by changing the speed within the gait. Flexibility improved by leg yielding, including on the diagonal — definitely not cookie cutter lessons. Stephen’s experience and good nature shines through with precise, clear, suitable exercises and positive feedback. Many thanks to Claire Vessey and Heather Cormie for organizing a great weekend. Sharon Martinez and her fabulous crew did a marvelous job hosting. There were pumpkins and beautiful flowers everywhere. Flying the British flag was a great touch! Thank you to Stephen Clarke for coming to Canada!
to his demands showing lightness and dance-like movements. They seemed to enjoy their bodies and express this in a playful, exuberant manner. A lot of praise was also part of the equation. The journey to this level of performance in these two short days was truly impressive. It seemed that Hinnemann fine tuned them like a musical instrument. He suggested to each rider after having achieved that degree of suppleness, throughness, rideabaility, and expression to incorporate segments/sequences of their test requirements into everyday training so it becomes very natural, familiar, and easy. After some hard work, he always told the rider to give the horse a walk break, let the horse relax, and let the horse think about it. It was amazing to see these improvements especially in the piaffe and passage, resulting from his skillfully timed and synchronized help from the ground. The whole clinic was a feast to watch!

en-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar of Perth, ON, won the first round of competition in the $100,000 Greenhawk Canadian Show Jumping Championship on opening night of the Royal Horse Show, held November 4-13, 2016, as part of the 94th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON. Hot on his heels were his two children, Amy and Jonathon, who placed second and third respectively. For the elder Millar, the only thing better than winning was seeing his family dominate the first of two phases of competition comprising the $100,000 Greenhawk Canadian Show Jumping Championship. “I am most pleased about second and third,” said Ian Millar in reaction to his daughter and son finishing immediately behind him in the standings. “They really did a great job. it’s always a matter of great pride for the rider that wins it. We’re a competitive group, and part of what makes us good at what we do is being pushed by the others.” Ian Millar has won the Canadian Show Jumping Championship a record 11 times and is on track to make it 12 after clinching Friday night’s speed round riding Dixson, owned by Susan and Ariel Grange of Cheltenham, ON. Dixson has recently returning to competition following a sinus surgery that prevented a 2016 Rio Olympic appearance in August. Ian Millar Wins Record 12th Greenhawk Canadian Championship Title Having finished second and third behind their father on Friday night, Jonathon and Amy Millar, both of Perth, ON, remained in the top five following the final phase of competition.

Jonathon Millar and Bonzay, owned by Isotropic investments, finished on 4.46 penalties for fourth while Amy Millar incurred 8.42 penalties to place fifth riding Heros, owned by AMMO Investments. Based on their performances in the Greenhawk Canadian Show Jumping Championship, Cone and Moffatt move forward to the international division, beginning Tuesday, November 8. They join fellow Canadians Tiffany Foster of North Vancouver, BC, Keean White of Rockwood, ON, Vanessa Mannix of Calgary, AB, Erynn Ballard of Tottenham, ON, and Ian and Jonathon Millar, who were all pre-qualified based on their world ranking. Ten-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar of Perth, ON, landed his record 12th Greenhawk Canadian Show Jumping Championship. Having returned to competition in August, Dixson was back at the top of his game, holding off Mac Cone, 64, of King City, ON. For the second year in a row, Cone earned the Reserve Championship title riding Gasper van den Doorn for owner Chadburn Holdings, Inc. The pair finished on a combined total of 1.73 penalties carried forward from Friday night’s speed phase, and joined Millar as the only other horse-rider combination to leave all the rails in place over three rounds of competition. Hyde Moffatt of Brantford, ON, posted two clear rounds in Saturday night’s final to finish third with a total of 4.45 penalties riding Granturo, owned by Western Sales & Development.

However, despite the majority of the field giving the track a measured ride, six competitors would finish on a total of 4 faults, eight on 8 faults or more, one eliminated, and with two riders, Sharn Wordley (NZL) and Tiffany Foster (CAN), retiring. The first clear of the evening went to the reigning Olympic Individual Gold Medalist Nick Skelton (GBR) and Big Star followed by Mac Cone (CAN), Kent Farrington (USA), McLain Ward (USA), and Shane Sweetnam (IRL). Over the deciding, short course, Jenni McAllister (USA) and 10-year-old gelding Legis Touch The Sun ultimately proved that a big, scopey horse can excel in a small indoor arena, as they went on to capture the win in the $132,000 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Royal West. Exactly one week after contesting the World Cup Qualifier at the Del Mar International Horse Show in California, McAllister traveled north, across the border, to try her luck over a track designed by Werner Deeg (GER). In an indoor arena, smaller than last week’s in her home state, she outshone a starting field of 21 horseand-rider pairs with one of only two double clear rounds—and the winning time of 41.88 seconds. “We bought him as a 5-year-old and knew right away he was something special,” the 47-yearold rider said of her mount. “He’s a competitive horse. He was still thinking of Thursday’s speed round tonight and was a little fresh at the start of the first round, but then he settled.” Canada’s Laura Jane Tidball, riding Prim’
de Lairaud, finished behind McAllister, while Canada’s Christopher Surbey rode to third place aboard Chalacorada. The first-round track was a fair one, according to the evening’s riders. And the first clear came with the first pair to contest the course: Cara Anthony (CAN) and Ayma de la Demi Lune. But soon after, poles began to drop throughout Deeg’s design, and a careful vertical away from the gate caused multiple rounds to record faults. The jump-off round featured multiple, galloping lines with only a couple opportunities to shave significant time by taking tight turns. Pierre Costabadie/FEI Germany’s Isabell Werth produced a personal-best Freestyle score to win the second leg of the FEI World Cup Dressage 2016/2017 Western European League riding Weihegold at Lyon, France.
Discipline Reports continued from page 41 “I think he’s probably the easiest horse I’ve ever ridden. He can package his stride to 10 feet and open it to 16, or 18, feet. He can do it all within ten strides. He’s really special. And he’s also very careful. It’s a really great combination for a big horse. I tell the kids, if there were a 1.60-meter equitation division, I’d easily win it on him.”
even this multi-medalled athlete by surprise. The pair who claimed team gold and individual silver at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games were always favourites, especially after winning the preliminary Grand Prix. But the scale of this victory was exceptional. “I was expecting she could do a super job, but to get more than 90 percent, now that was amazing! She has really improved since Rio!” Werth said of her talented horse. Britain’s Carl Hester and his Olympic ride Nip Tuck finished second with a big score of 85.02, while defending FEI World Cup Dressage champion, The Netherlands’ Hans Peter Minderhoud, slotted into third with Glock’s Johnson on a mark of 80.22. In an all-German battle for fourth it was Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Zaire-E who edged out birthday girl Fabienne Lutkemeier and D’Agostino FRH by just 0.01 marks when posting 79.63, while Sweden’s Patrik Kittel and Deja filled sixth place on 77.97. Kittel led the world-class 15-strong field at the halfway stage, but once Werth set sail with

FEI Classics: just another day at the office for Clifford When it came down to the final jumping phase of the FEI Classics at the Australian International 3 Day Event in Adelaide (AUS), Hazel Shannon (AUS) had considerable room to move with Clifford, the powerful thoroughbred. They could have knocked down three rails and still won, but the gelding that “always does his job” did just that and added nothing further to his dressage score than 0.4 of a cross country time penalty. Clifford clearly knew where the rails were and, most importantly, kept away from them. “That’s Clifford to a tee,” explained Shannon. “He is not extravagant in any phase — he just does his job and I can’t ask for more than that. There is a huge amount of training that has gone into Clifford, but his temperament is such that he allows you to train him. It is not just about raw talent, it is the heart and the mind of the horse that matters and this was just another day at the office for Clifford. He keeps trying and trying, and getting better and better.” In the end, Shannon and Clifford cruised www.gaitpost.com

four left to go, the result never seemed in any doubt, Weihegold’s confidence and self-carriage complimenting delightful passage, piaffe and pirouette. In essence it all seemed effortless, and as she left the arena the six-time Olympic gold medallist had the broadest of smiles. Hester joked that he felt he had a great chance now that his proteges, the world-beating partnership of Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro, are retiring. “I thought this season might be my opportunity, but now that Isabell is getting so much better it’s going to be a tougher fight!” he said. The nine-leg series now moves to Stuttgart in Germany next month.
