TIDBITS

Christmas Bits Cold Bits! U

p until this last week, it was hard to adjust to the idea of working on the Christmas issue, even after years of preparing for the last issue of the calendar year, when Halloween was barely past. As someone who doesn’t shop for gifts until the week before Christmas, and doesn’t feel the pressure until the 24th, getting ready in early November is unnatural. But this week, the cold set in with a vengeance, and reminded us all why we didn’t really want to complain about the heat

last summer. It was a bit rude of Mother Nature to hammer us with the cold and snow when it was barely into November yet, but we survived. Like the pumpkins, we were not impressed though.

The Jump Canada Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Gala, presented by BMO Financial Group, will return on Sunday, November 4, 2018, at the Liberty Grand in Toronto, ON. In light of the enormous amount of aid required following the destruction caused by Hurricanes Irma and

Maria, the Jump Canada Hall of Fame committee is focusing on aiding relief efforts specifically for equines. To that end, Jump Canada Hall of Fame Chairman Mark Samuel has spearheaded the creation of the Caribbean Equine Relief Fund. The Hall of Fame’s title sponsor since its inception, BMO Financial Group has generously pledged a leadership donation of $25,000 to support this vital initiative, which serves to save, protect, and care for the equine victims of these two massive hurricanes. “We are humbled by the support and generosity shown by our long-time partner, BMO Financial Group, our great friend in horses and humanity,” said Samuel. “The support offered through its leadership gift is indicative of the overwhelming support shown by the equestrian community since the creation of the Caribbean Equine Relief Fund was announced. We encourage all of our loyal Hall of Fame sponsors and table and ticket buyers to join BMO in contributing to this important initiative during our off-year, as help is still so desperately needed.” One hundred percent of the funds donated to the Caribbean Equine Relief Fund will go towards the cost of providing feed and medical supplies to the horses, po-

“MY HORSE WON’T MOVE FORWARD”

M

ore often than not we are asked to address some very vague issues throughout our day. A few of the most common ones are; “My horse won’t move forward” or “My horse won’t work right” or “I think my horse has a sore back”. If there is anything that I’ve learned in the last 23 years of being a Veterinarian it is that the more subtle the problem, the harder and potentially more expensive it will be to find the answer and solve the problem. Now having said that, there are times we get “lucky” and can try a few things and stumble onto the answer. So let’s look at some of the most common possibilities and some things we might do to start to look for the problem. The musculoskeletal system is the most

12

DECEMBER 2017

common and the most logical place to start as it can be responsible for the majority of these problems. The musculoskeletal system is quite extensive and would take an entire textbook to cover all the possibilities. Sore joints, tendons, ligaments and bones make up the majority of our performance issues that we find. This would include arthritis, sprains, strains, tears and bone inflammation and/or remodeling. Muscles can tear but rarely do in horses and they do become sensitive, however they usually are not an ongoing persistent issue. Muscles become sensitive by staying in a state of contraction, most often in response to protecting tendons, ligaments or joints. A thorough lameness exam is always advised. During this exam the horse is usually ob-

served on hard and soft ground, and on a lunge line. Often times flexion tests may be performed along with hoof testers. A thorough palpation of the neck, the back, the pelvis and the distal limbs is also very important. Arthritis can and does occur along many parts of the spinal column just like in all species. The neck, back and pelvis are all sources of wear and tear from athletic use. Sometimes it is important to watch the horse under saddle as well. If significantly worse, then the saddle should be checked and any unsoundness localized if possible. If the horse is noted to be lame, it is important to try and localize the region involved and pursue diagnostics and/or treatment as recommended based on your particular situation. If no obvious lameness is observed these cases can become a lot harder. A Chiropractic/Acupuncture exam may help to further evaluate the musculoskeletal system in terms of TMJ sensitivity, neck stiffness, back or pelvic sensitivity or decreases in range of motion. Sometimes treatment with acupuncture or adjustments can be performed to alleviate the tenderness in the relevant areas. Often times it may be suggested to put the horse on some antiinflammatories for a short period of time as a trial to see if there is improvement. In regards to muscle sensitivity, there also are genetically related muscle disorders that may present as vague complaints like mentioned above. One of these conditions is known as Equine Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (EPSM). These horses have a varied presentation and some systemic bloodwork along with genetic testing and/or muscle biopsies may be useful in determining if your horse has this disorder. Some horses may also have low grade chronic recurrent rhabdomyolysis (Tying up). This can be found by looking at muscle enzymes in the horse’s blood. If it’s not the musculoskeletal system, there are still a myriad of other problems to consider. The gastro intestinal system may also play a role. Dental abnormalities may also cause problems with your horse’s movement. Mouth pain from ulcers, hooks, or other dental abnormalities www.gaitpost.com

can lead to performance issues. Gastric Ulcers may also affect your horse in various ways. They may be the primary cause or as a consequence of other problems. The best way to diagnose this is with Gastroscopy so you can accurately diagnose and treat the problem appropriately as there are different types of ulcers that may require different treatments. The endocrine system may also be responsible for performance related complaints. If this is a mare, then hormonal or ovarian abnormalities may need to be investigated. An ultrasound of the reproductive tract and sometimes bloodwork looking at the various hormones can help decide if any further treatment is needed. Often times a trial run of progesterone treatment is recommended for two weeks. You might also consider other tests for conditions like Cushing’s Syndrome. A simple screen test evaluating the ACTH level can demonstrate a need for treatment prior to the more common obvious clinical signs of the long curly hair coat. We are recognizing Cushing’s earlier than we have previously and we know that this disease has a slow insidious onset. The respiratory system may also be responsible for poor performance. It’s important to know if there have been any coughs or nasal/ocular discharge noted in the history of the horse. This would include any respiratory illnesses that had occurred in the barn where the horse was stabled. These could be viral or bacterial in origin. Even low grade infections can affect performance. Allergies may also affect the lungs and the horse’s ability to breathe properly during exercise. A physical exam and auscultation of the heart and lungs may help determine the cause but often times they are such low grade they can be difficult to hear on a routine exam. An endoscopic exam of the pharynx and trachea can lead to a diagnosis along with other ancillary testing such as a broncho-alveolar lavage and culture. These tests will help to formulate the appropriate treatment plan needed to get you back riding again. As one can see there are many things to consider when your horse stops performing up to

championship and five European Championship medals, Minderhoud has had considerable success with young horses, leading him to twice win Holland’s young horse championship, the prestigious Pavo Cup. Minderhoud will teach the young horse sessions at the symposium. Monty Roberts will demonstrate his Join-Up method for starting horse made so famous though his bestselling book The Man who listened to Horses. To stop the cycle of violence typically accepted in traditional horse breaking, Monty created a set of principles using the horse’s inherent methods of communication and herd behavior to lead to a more effective and gentle method. The result is a willing partnership in which the horse’s performance can flourish to its full potential, rather than exist within the boundaries of obedience. “Our goal is to create a memorable experience for the attendees, presenters and participants. For this event we have a beautiful intimate setting, offering VIP seating with daily lunch served at private tables, champagne and unrivaled view of the arena,” says Scott Hayes, CEO of SH Productions..

his or her usual standards. Some are simple reasons but some can be complex and involve many different systems. The best place to start is with a physical exam and a soundness evaluation by your Veterinarian. Eric Martin DVM, CAc, cVSMT: Dr. Martin pursued veterinary medicine by attending Kansas State University Veterinary School. While there, he was given the opportunity to further his education through externships in the northeast, at Mid Atlantic Equine Medical Center. After graduating, he accepted an associate position in a sport horse practice in central Connecticut where he worked for 3 years prior to moving to the Fraser Valley in British Columbia. He pursued his interest in the sport horse world by becoming certified in Acupuncture and Chiropractic procedures.

T

he days are getting shorter and the nights longer, but all across Western Europe equestrian fans know that means just one thing — the start of the much-loved Longines FEI World Cup Jumping season. And this is going to be a really special one, as the series celebrates its 40th anniversary and the Final returns to Paris (FRA) where it was held just once before, 30 long years ago. The record books show Germany and the USA neck-and-neck in terms of title victories with 10 apiece, and nothing could demonstrate just how much success means more than the sheer joy of 2017 champion, America’s multimedalled McLain Ward, who won through in a classic finale on home ground in Omaha, Nebraska earlier this year. Because this is one they www.gaitpost.com

all want, no matter what other prestigious titles they have taken. The trophy has legendary status and the winners take their place in the annals of equestrian history amongst giants of this hugely popular sport. It took Ward at least 25 attempts to do it, and he didn’t disguise his sheer delight when he succeeded at last. As the new Western European League gets underway in Oslo, Norway, the battle for one of the 18 coveted qualifying spots in this region commences. And with five of the top 10, and 11 of the top 20 in the Longines Rankings lining out, the opener looks like a sizzler. Currently world no. 3, Frenchman Kevin

However Oslo has also attracted so many of the other big names, including Italy’s Lorenzo de Luca who has enjoyed an extraordinary run of form over the last 12 months, and the newlycrowned European champion, Peder Fredricson from Sweden. Add in the 2012 Olympic champion Steve Guerdat from Switzerland who posted a backto-back double of World Cup wins in 2015 and 2016, and 2014 champion Germany’s Daniel Deusser along with so many more, and it’s clearly going to be an awesome start to the 13-leg series. Every season new talent shines throughout the qualifying rounds and last year Italy’s Alberto Zorzi announced his very definite arrival at the top end of the sport with victory in Oslo.

He returns to the Norwegian fixture this year having relentlessly climbed up the rankings list all the way to 13th spot, and brings his winning ride, Fair Light van’t Heike with him. Zorzi may well be one to watch as this new Western European League progresses. T

he weekend of September 16th and 17th saw Duncan-area liberty horsemanship trainer and coach Heather Nelson teaching a wide variety of students the basics of liberty work with their horses, creating a deep bond between horse and human. The clinic at John Road Barn in North Saanich was well-attended with a seven students, ranging in age from the very youngest –two four year old girls with their much older ponies (the youngest students Heather has had the pleasure of teaching), as well as a few horses that are well on their way to better lives—one off-the-track thoroughbred stepping into a second career as a riding horse, and one horse rescued in the nick of time from being shipped off in a crate for the horse meat market in Japan. Heather says of her students at the clinic, “Everyone showed a great commitment, passion and desire to communicate with their horses and strengthen their bond.” The first day of the clinic started with a theory session on the basics of liberty work each morning and then progressed to lessons. The horses were taught in a large arena with no lines or halters—complete freedom. Heather’s goal was to teach the students how to connect with their horses through body language and energy. Once the connection was made, the horse was rewarded. Heather then showed the students how to teach the horses to bend their bodies, shift their weight, navigate through obstacles, and to come forward or go away response to cues. This was all done using hand signals, cues and some people used dressage whips, only as directional aids. The clinic was well attended with spectators coming not only from the south island, but from the Salt Spring and the Gulf Islands as well. Heather travels quite extensively and gives clinics not only on the island and around British Columbia, but teaches in Europe as well. She will be returning to the south island again in January. he Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI), the world governing body for equestrian sport, has announced a brand new partnership with China National Sports International (CNSI), a sports and entertainment company that specialises in equestrian sports in China. The five-year deal, which sees CNSI become Official Business Partner of the FEI in China, is expected to rapidly increase the profile of equestrian sport in China. The FEI and CNSI will develop a large-scale esport, e-commerce and social media presence for equestrian sport to launch in 2018. The FEI’s decision to focus efforts in China comes on the back of rapidly growing enthusiasm for equestrian sport in the world’s second largest economy, which also now boasts the world’s second biggest horse population. Against a national strategy spearheaded by

20

China’s General Administration of Sport to increase sport participation, experts are now predicting that the horse sport industry — which already has an economic impact of over 1.5 billion USD in China — is set for huge growth. Currently, there are 400,000 active equestrians in China with one in 1,000 fans riding regularly, and 300,000 people directly employed in horse sport. The FEI will be focusing on equestrian within a burgeoning sports industry in China, which according to a report from Bank of China International earlier this year was worth 1.5 trillion yuan (USD 222.68 billion) in 2016, is on track to double by 2020 and could reach 5 trillion yuan by 2025. ressage BC presented the 2017 Educational Symposium on November 3 — 5, at High Point Equestrian Club, in Langley, BC, and it was fabulous on every level. Juan Manuel Munoz Diaz, who represented Spain at the 2010 World Equestrian Games and Olympics in 2012 with Fuego, provided the auditors and riders with the eyeful of dressage they came for. The Symposium was preceded by two days of private lessons with Juan, giving many riders the opportunity to learn from him that might not have been possible otherwise. This made for five days of clinic organizing and hosting for Dressage BC and High Point, a huge task under any conditions. The Lower Mainland of BC managed to add to the fun with an early winter blast, shocking us all after a hot summer and lovely, warm fall. The term “Arctic tundra” comes to mind. And although the area usually comes to

a grinding halt with the faintest hint of snow, all the riders managed to make it to the clinic with their trailers, and the auditors braved the cold despite the appeal of staying home and warm. Our poor Spanish guest froze out there, without complaint, and was plied with hot drinks, pocket heaters, and warm clothing for the duration. We tried to convince him that it was really unusual temperatures for this early in the season, but I don’t think he believed us. When I asked if and when he would return to us, he looked sideways at me and said “Not now”, meaning not this time of year. Not a surprise when at home it is in the 20’s… Juan is a very soft-spoken clinician, and with English as a second language for him, the verbal information was perhaps not overly abundant. Some of the trainerspeak was amusing and effective, resembling a talkative budgie — quick

chirps, clucks, whistles and hummms that riders all over the world understand, as do the horses! The education lay in the visual buffet laid out for us, with an interesting variety of horses, riders and levels. Every horse was improved in their way of going, seemingly without overt pressure from the clinician — just repetition of transitions with impeccable timing on his part, which became more apparent the longer one watched. I was fortunate enough to ride with him in one private session and one symposium session, and definitely felt the results with my mare, Dantesse. The second ride was much more intense, with many transitions from medium trot to piaffe and back — there was no sucking back behind the leg for any horse in this clinic! It was a good reminder for me to not assume forward is always in front of the leg. There is always more in there — lots more! When asked about whether he was enjoying teaching us here in BC, Juan had a very enthusiastic “YES” in reply. He said he was really impressed with the quality of horses and riders that were put in front of him — he was very happy that there were no heavy-handed, rough rides at all. Everyone was well on the way to working in lightness, and he thought the horses were very, very good. With everything from an FEI level Friesian to PREs, young horses, and assorted warmbloods to watch, Juan adapted his teaching to each one individually, but the end result was always more forward, lighter, quicker behind, and loose. In particular, he was very impressed with Shelley Lawder and the Houweling’s mare, Zaouira, who worked beautifully through the Prix St Georges level, and more. He felt she was “a team horse” in the future. Such an exciting thing to hear… Juan Diaz Clinic continued on page 29 www.gaitpost.com

Juan Diaz Clinic continued from page 23 Juan was also impressed with the Andalusian and PRE’s that were presented, which is saying a lot, coming from a Spaniard and an Olympic rider! I think he would have happily kept teaching the horses he had for the clinic and symposium. I felt a genuine interest coming from him, and a pleasure in the lessons. Wendy Christoff, of Dressage BC and one of the key organizers of the weekend, said Juan was a treat to work with — very easygoing, very accommodating, and very kind. Wendy had the opportunity to watch almost all the rides, and felt he was extremely effective in improving every horse’s way of going. Huge kudos to Wendy, and Moya Byrne of High Point, and Leslie Reid for bringing in this quality of coach, and pulling it off without any (apparent) hitches. It was a very pleasant symposium to attend, in such a lovely facility, with welcoming and accommodating organizers and staff. The lunches, catered by Wilma Van Oosten, were so very good! The silent auction was very tempting (I took home a blingy halter for Dantesse which she doesn’t really need, but…it was so pretty! Thanks, Bates Tack Shop!) The Dog & Pony gave away door prizes and had their awesome trailer there as well, for a little added retail therapy, as did N2 saddlery. It was a feast for all senses, in a beautiful setting. www.gaitpost.com

Having organized a few clinics over the years, I understand how difficult it is to set up, schedule, and organize. It is a huge undertaking that requires the juggling of many balls in the air, (cat herding?) and multiple multi-taskers that work together well. That being said, there are a few things you, as auditors, can do to really help to make these events fly well. If a clinic is being advertised well in advance, offering early ticket sales, please do take advantage and sign up early. When it comes to estimating numbers, this is a huge help — with seating, food, funding…so many ways. We want to make it easier for these organizers, who have extreme dedication to the sport of dressage, to continue to bring in these top trainers and coaches. They are here for you as much as the riders in the clinic! A little early scheduling on your part can make all the difference — imagine trying to guess how many people to cater to, when most only pay at the door on the way in. Early registration will make it more enjoyable for everyone involved! Thank you to everyone that preregistered and committed early to the BC Dressage Symposium — a little forethought goes a long way toward encouraging the organizers to do it all again. I am told that there is a good chance Juan Diaz will return, possibly in April, depending on his schedule at home as he is shooting for qualifying for WEG next year. We wish him the best of luck, and look forward to his return, and warmer weather.

With pin-point accuracy they raced into the lead when third-last to go in the 11-horse jumpoff, and their time of 35.91 seconds couldn’t be bettered despite a brave attempt by Italian runner-up Alberto Zorzi (28) with Fair Light van T Heike while Belgium’s Pieter Devos (31) and Apart finished third. Zorzi however had a big smile on his face when he learned that this result has raised him to the top of the League table ahead of the fourth 30

leg of the series in Lyon, France. Course designer, Italy’s Uliano Vezzani, left them with only one option in the final round, a fast and furious run that would test courage, balance and commitment. And when it came down to it the dynamic Dutch duo had it all. Verdi is a big, tall stallion but van der Vleuten knew he could trust him every inch of the way. “He doesn’t change, he is the same every day, in rain or sunshine and no matter where he is. He is very special, and most of all he is very honest!” the Dutchman said. There were four Italian contenders in the final round so the crowd were on the edge of their

FEI/AMANDA UBELL Isabelle Lapierre with her horse Cescha M takes a second win for the season in Calgary on Saturday 28 October at the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping North American League.

Discipline Reports continued from page 30 seats. But 23-year-old rising star, Luigi Polesello with Panama Tame and Emilio Bicocchi and Sassicaia Ares both had two fences down, and although Lorenzo de Luca was clear with Halifax van het Kluizebos his time of 38.00 seconds was only fast enough for fourth place. Van der Vleuten has had Verdi since he was a four-year-old, and the bond between them is key to their success. “He is a horse that likes to win and that’s very important. If you are a good rider and you have a horse that is not able or doesn’t want to win, then it’s just not possible. Every week I try to feel how he is, I don’t need to teach him jumping anymore, he knows his job and what’s most important for me is that he has to be happy!” LAPIERRE WINS SECOND LONGINES EVENT OF 2017 IN CALGARY Canada’s Isabelle Lapierre became the first rider two win multiple events on the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping North American League

this year when she rode Cescha M to her second victory of the season in Calgary (CAN). Lapierre (CAN) and her own 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare were one of just three horse-and-rider combinations to jump cleanly in the first round of the Werner Deeg (GER) designed course. No one produced a clear round in the jump-off. Lapierre sealed the victory with a 4-fault score and a winning time of 50.16 over Laura Jane-Tidball (CAN) and Concetto Son, who clocked in at 50.75 seconds, also knocking one jump-off rail down. Sarah Scheiring (USA) and Dontez were third with 4 faults and a time of 52.84 seconds. Lapierre and Cescha M won the season opener of the league, triumphing in Bromont (CAN) in August in what was the mare’s World Cup qualifier debut. Uniquely, the duo has won an event in each of the league’s sub leagues: Bromont is part of the east coast sub league, while Calgary is in the west coast sub league. Now, Lapierre has her sights set on the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Final, which will take place in Paris (FRA) in April 2018. Isabelle Lapierre (CAN) said, “I think it goes so fast in the jump-off. You make a plan, but you just take what happens. I wasn’t sure when I jumped the last jump if I won it or not, because it took a long time to show it on the board! I just think that [Cescha M] did an amazing job. I trust her over every jump.” Laura Jane-Tidball (CAN) said, “I was second here last year, so twice in a row! But my horse was amazing, and I couldn’t have asked him to have been any better than that tonight.” CANADA SWEEPS THE $100,000 PRIX DE PENN NATIONAL AT THE PENNSYLVANIA HORSE SHOW Oh Canada! Nine horse-and-rider combinations out of 26 starters moved forward to the tiebreaking jumpoff out after riding fault-free over the first-round course designed by Bernardo Cabral of Portugal. Five had double clear rounds beginning with Kelli Cruciotti (USA) who had a clear round in a time of 33.30 seconds on Hadja van Orshof. Lamontagne then took over the lead with a clean round in 31.51 seconds. However his compatriot dethroned him a few minutes later going clear in a winning time of 30.77. Emily Moffitt (GBR) made a valiant effort to take over the lead finishing in 32.04 seconds on Hilfiger van de Olmenhoeve. Ramsay followed and stopped the timers a blink of an eye faster, finishing in 32.02 seconds. Swiss Olympic veteran and former World Cup champion Beat Mandli actually had the fastest jump-off time, finishing in 29.96 seconds on Dsarie, but a rail down at the penultimate fence cost him four faults and left him in sixth place. “This is my first three-star win and definitely my biggest win to date,” said an elated Walker

AMANDA UBELL PHOTOGRAPHY Ireland’s Conor Swail and Flower winners of the $35,000 Friends of Royal West Cup presented by Truman Homes, phase 2 of the Royal West International Championship on the second day of Royal West, Calgary, AB.

Discipline Reports continued from page 33 Flower blazed to the win double clear in 37.05 seconds. Swail dared the other riders going first in the jump off with inside turns and fast gallops on CK Coco Chanel. His clear round jump-off and fast time kept others chasing the clock and incurring rails in the process. “I have more experience with Flower going fast in jump-offs — I’m still getting to know Coco Chanel in the jump-off. It was tight and fast on [Coco Chanel] and I honestly wasn’t sure I could beat it, but Flower and I have been in that situation before and I knew I could trust our partnership,” said Swail. It looked like the time would hold until Calgarian Jim Ifko entered the ring on his 9-year-old stallion Un Diamant des Forets (Diamant de Semilly x Papillion Rouge). With only Swail and Daniel Coyle coming behind him, he showed an opening in the course, stopping the clocks at 37.35 seconds.

“It is so great having this level of indoor competition right here in Calgary,” said Ifko. “My horse jumped so well and it is great to be up on the podium in this company,” he continued. Coming right after Ifko, Swail guided Flower, who was also 2nd in the $35,000 Speed class last night, to masterful turns, including a crowdwhistling gallop to the final fence. Last night’s winner, fellow Irishman Daniel Coyle caught rails chasing the clock after clear first rounds with both his mounts Cita and Fortis Fortuna. The course, designed by Werner Deeg (GER), Peter Holmes (CAN), Chris Jones (CAN), and Eric Hasbrouck (USA), was off to a slightly auspicious start when the first four riders — Swail, Jeff Campf, Kyle King, and Laura Jane Tidball all jumped clear rounds. However, a dearth of clear rides followed and spectators had to wait until the 20th in the order — Lauren Crooks and Valentino d’Elte to produce the fifth clear round. As a new sponsor to the world of Show Jumping, Truman Homes President George Trutina was “completely hooked” by his first international competition sponsorship. As a good friend of Rocky Mountain Show Jumping’s John Anderson, Trutina has been introduced to the horse show world and is excited to be a longtime supporter. His first ribbon presentation ceremony was an exciting one, as Swail’s Flower stepped on his foot during the trophy presentation, a story that will likely be told throughout Truman Homes’ continued support of the sport. Early evening brought the $10,000 Greenhawk Calgary Hunter Derby with Brent Balisky taking the win with Class Act. He was followed by

SHANNON BRINKMAN Selena O’Hanlon and Foxwood High.

Discipline Reports continued from page 35 eight weeks ago, the 48-year-old German rider wasn’t competing her no 1 ride, the great mare Weihegold. So the reigning FEI World Cup Dressage champion had to settle for runner-up spot with Don Johnson FRH ahead of Sweden’s Patrik Kittel and Delaunay OLD in third, mirroring exactly the results of the preliminary Grand Prix. There was a huge sense of achievement for

Dufour. “The last time I competed in a World Cup was two years ago, and we finished secondlast! So I wanted to improve on that for sure!” she said. Going sixth of the 14 starters, Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén and Paridon Magi posted a leading mark of 76.320 but were overtaken by another of Denmark’s rising talents, 23-yearold Anna Zibrandtsen who held the advantage with Arlando at the halfway break when putting 76.945 on the board. And the standard just kept rising as the last six took their turn, Agnete Kirk Thinggaard, a member of the Danish silver medal winning team in Gothenburg alongside Zibrandtsen, Dufour and Anna Kasprazak, scoring 78.500 with Jojo Az before Werth changed the whole tempo of the competition when posting 83.755. The sometimes naughty “Johnny”, as Don Johnson is better known, was clearly on top form, throwing a buck before entering the arena and then producing a really fluent Freestyle, full of power and collection. Werth knew she had thrown down the gauntlet to the remaining four left to go, but, second-last into the the ring, Dufour didn’t flinch. A high degree of difficulty in the early stages of their floorplan suggested a big score might well be on the way. And so it was, with the loveliest walk included in their beautifully executed test for the massive winning mark of 85.945, all five judges putting the pair in pole position and the crowd rising to their feet in sheer delight. DRESSAGE RESULTS FEI WORLD CUP DRESSAGE 2017/2018 WESTERN EUROPEAN LEAGUE IN HERNING (DEN) RESULTS: 1, Atterupgaards Cassidy (Cathrine Dufour) DEN 85.945; 2, Don Johnson FRH (Isabell Werth) GER 83.755; 3, Delaunay OLD (Patrik Kittel) SWE 81.095; 4, Blue Hors Zack (Daniel Bachmann Andersen) DEN 80.305; 5, Zaire-E (Jessica von Bredow-Werndl) GER 80.170; 6, Jojo AZ (Agnete Kirk Thinggaard) DEN 78.500.

O’HANLON CLAIMS CCI 3* VICTORY AT THE 2017 FAIR HILL INTERNATIONAL THREE-DAY EVENT The Show Jumping phase proved influential for CCI*** competitors Sunday at The 2017 Dutta Corp. Fair Hill International Three-Day Event with the leaderboard shuffling to reveal

Canada’s Selena O’Hanlon and Foxwood High as the winning pair and William Coleman and Tight Lines as The Dutta Corp./USEF CCI*** Eventing National Champions. Meanwhile, Tamra Smith and Sunsprite Syrius remained unaffected by the challenging Show Jumping phase to close out a start to finish win of the CCI** division. It was a rollercoaster weekend for Selena O’Hanlon as she bounced from first to second and back on top again with Foxwood High, a 14-year-old Canadian Sport Horse owned by John and Judy Rumble. Ultimately, the CCI*** win and a $15,000 prize was hers for the taking after adding three deliberate time penalties in Sunday’s Show Jumping to finish on a score of 44.0. “I’m super excited for this horse at this level. It was a personal best all the way through I couldn’t have asked for any more of him,” she said. “Today I got a little worried. He started Show Jumping by braille which leads to rails usually, so I took the time to have a clear round because that was my goal and I’m glad it all worked

out in the end anyway.” O’Hanlon also received The Linda Moore Trophy as the highest placed foreign entry as well as The Beale Wright Morris Memorial Trophy as the leading lady in the CCI***. William Coleman and Tight Lines were crowned Dutta Corp./USEF CCI*** National Eventing Champions after a faultless show jump round left them on their Dressage score (46.3) as the highest placed American pair. A clear round catapulted Boyd Martin and Christine Turner’s Tsetserleg to third place in the CCI*** for the Dutta Corp./USEF CCI*** Reserve Champion title. A score of 46.1 in the Dressage and 1.2 time penalties on Cross Country gave them a final result of 47.3. “He’s a newer horse for me. He just doesn’t wow you at home, but when you get to a competition this horse all of the sudden grows to about 17.2, and he jumps as high as you wanna jump and and moves like Totilas, and we saw that this weekend at Fair Hill,” Martin commented on his talented partner.

BC LOWER MAINLAND PONY CLUB ACHIEVEMENTS: HIGH POINT AWARDS & NATIONAL QUIZ TEAM ROBIN RAY

By Tracy Carver

O

ctober has been a spectacular month for our BC Lower Mainland pony club members! We wrapped up our adventure-filled summer show season with two eagerly anticipated events for our members: National Quiz and our annual High Point awards. Early this year in February our BC Lower Mainland members competed in our Regional Quiz event, and the top four C2 finalists qualified to represent us at the National Quiz event held this year in Kelowna. Over 100 top competitors from across Canada pitted their equine knowledge against other C and B level members in a series of tests designed to reveal the full ex38

tent of their mastery of all things equestrian. From written tests to hands on identification of obscure and little known equine related items, competitors earned scores that gave them individual rankings. Day two was composed of team challenges, which featured trivia and team games, and even a station where members were blindfolded and had to assemble a cavesson bridle with the clock ticking. Congratulations to our National team, who competed against 15 other teams and took home the gold! In addition to winning the top team award, our members finished with fantastic individual results. Out of 60 C level competitors across Canada, Kassandra

Hawes placed 2nd, Jordan Carver finished 3rd, Ariel Carver took 8th, and Emily Shaver placed 10th; we are proud of our members and their fantastic efforts! October also brings the presentation of our Combined High Point and Eventing High Point Awards. Every year, two separate High Point Awards are given for each Pony Club level from E through A. Our Combined High Point Award is for the member, at each CPC level, with the highest points earned from competing in both our BCLM Show Jump and Dressage events on the same horse. Our Eventing Award is based on scores achieved by our pony club members

in Canadian, full 3-Phase EC governed events, and include dressage, cross country and stadium phases. This year we had fourteen High Point Award recipients; awards were presented by Michel Vaillancourt at the Mane Event on October 21st. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Noel Asmar Equestrian, who once again generously sponsored our High Point awards program by donating this year’s award prizes: amazing riding polos which will be worn with pride at future local riding events. BCLM Pony Club News for December 2017 canadianponyclub.org | bclm.ponyclub.ca Pony Club Update Fall brings cooler temperatures, glorious fall colours, and tons of new educational opportunities for our BC Lower Mainland Pony Club members! Our region of the Canadian Pony Club organization has a dual focus: teaching our members progressive equine riding skills, and educating them in all areas of horse related care. From cleaning tack properly to their horse’s nutritional needs and regular vet care to the myriad of responsibilities in managing a full equestrian centered barn, our program is not only comprehensive, but also structured in levels (similar to grades) that are progressive and built upon previous years’ lessons. Aimed at members aged 6 up to 25, we have recently introduced a Horsemasters program for any equine enthusiasts 26 and older who seek to benefit from our extensive educational program.

Services will be presenting a talk on Equine Vet Care, Heath Purdy of Heath Purdy Tack and TD Services will educate our members about current Eventing Rules and Regulations, and Shelagh Niblock of HiPro Feeds will be discussing Equine Nutrition.

November 25 will mark the first of our regional educational opportunities for our members, with an Education Seminar featuring three exceptional speakers: Dr. Martin of Paton and Martin Veterinary

For more information about Canadian Pony Club, or to find out how to become involved in this exciting organization, please contact Tracy Carver at (778) 999-7400.

In addition to one day seminars, our organization offers Stable Management lessons for all pony club levels E through A, with lessons being offered both at the branch level (E though C1) and the regional level for our C2 members and above. Taught with a variety of approaches, we use mentorship of senior members, guest speakers, and study guides provided from our National CPC office to ensure that all members receive an outstanding equine-focused education throughout their pony club year.

excitement of travel and a whole new world of horses and riders. However only a select few seem to be able to rise above the strain of a long season. Then there are the ’Fat & Fuzzys.’ Thick wooly coats and frosty whiskers. You and your horse take a break from training and easily slip into hibernation. Having all Maddy Jade and EkoTest that time off will usually mean a longer, slower catch up when spring does arrive. WINTER GOALS

Horse people hate to see the season end, usually dread the winter and can’t wait until the first signs of spring. As Eventers, there are 3 common ways we get through these next few months. All have + and – and each one is as unique as each horse and rider combination. I think the most common is the ‘Clip & Train.’ You carry on with your training as much as you can, weather and daylight permitting. Both of you stay fairly fit and are up for any winter clinics, jump days or a heavy school. I assure you that dealing with the possibility of chill and constant blanket changes consumes a lot of barn time. Then there are the hardcore ‘Cali Competitors’. To head down to sunny California to extend your horse showing days sounds perfect. The
