Embawo is the creative Italian brand, known for its innovative use of WOOD in FASHION accessories and LIFESTYLE items.

Embawo’s creations are made of the innovative combination of wood and leather. All pieces can be widely personalized according to the customer’s wish. Each piece is itself a uniqueness due to the fact that it cannot be replicated because wood is an ever changeable material when used in its naturality. Embawo exalts the colors and the forms of the nature. Embawo represents essentially a style… a life mood, a way to be, a statement…. classy, clean lines, smooth shapes… natural design. The smartness of the know-how coming from the made-in-Italy manufacturing excellence. “We dedicated the first six years of activity in a serious research of customers satisfaction… and we can say that Embawo has reached the “wow” reaction!” says Norbert, the creator of the brand. Each bag or accessory incorporates the brand’s signature wood panels, but the varying grains give each one a completely different appearance. Embawo has its design studio in Milan and the production seat in South Tirol, the Italian region where the quality is a “must” in all sectors. While Norbert loves designing bags, this is not where the Embawo story ends: a line of handbaggage has been already launched and, more furniture and homewards are already in his collection.

Interview with

Norbert Oettl “I was born in Meran (South Tirol) and grew up in a nearby valley (Val Passiria). Prior to be a designer, I am an artisan, a wood artisan. Wood, forests and mountains have been my passion since childhood. Fashion has always been my other passion. “My family did not have great means but definitively a great work ethic, so as a child I just wanted to learn a trade to lend a hand. I went to school and apprenticed to become a carpenter. But I didn’t want to make only furniture; I sensed that wood is a fascinating living material – a source of inspiration to those who love shapes and design, like me. I wanted this beautiful material to be worn, carried about, and proudly displayed. It’s a shame to leave it locked up at home, so I decided to make it lightweight and wearable. I wanted to create unique pieces that are difficult to replicate in style and class: the combination of wood and leather to create fashion, travel and home accessories was enlightening – precious materials and simple pieces to wear with class. “The thing that gives me a lot of satisfaction now is the surprise that my creations evoke. Walking around with my travel trolley and seeing people turn to look and chase me to touch it, assuring them that it is really wood – this is the “wow” factor! Fantastico!

“Sono nato a Merano e cresciuto in una valle lì vicino. Prima di essere un designer sono un artigiano. Un artigiano del legno. Il legno, i boschi, la montagna sono stati la mia passione fin da piccolo. Crescendo mi è venuto naturale applicare la mia creatività e il mio senso estetico ad un materiale familiare ed estremamente duttile, tra le mie mani. “La mia famiglia non era dotata di grandi mezzi economici ma sicuramente di un grande senso per il lavoro, così fin da ragazzino ho voluto subito imparare un mestiere per “dare una mano”. Così ho frequentato una scuola e un praticantato per diventare falegname. Ma non volevo appena fare mobili, intuivo che il legno è un materiale vivo e di grande fascino - una fonte di ispirazione per chi ama le forme e il design, come me. Volevo che questo bellissimo materiale si potesse indossare, portare in giro, mostrare con orgoglio. È un peccato lasciarlo chiuso in casa, così ho deciso di renderlo leggero ed indossabile. Volevo creare dei pezzi unici, difficili da replicare nello stile e nella classe… la combinazione di legno e pelle per creare accessori moda e da viaggio è stata illuminante. Materiali preziosi e semplici per pezzi unici da indossare con classe.

“La cosa che mi da tantissima soddisfazione ora è l’effetto sorpresa che le mie creazioni suscitano. Andare in giro con il mio trolley da viaggio e vedere la gente che si gira per guardare o rincorrermi per toccarlo e sincerarsi che è davvero legno. Ecco il “wow” factor è lì!! Fantastico!

business project with a friend of mine who works with the International Organization for Migration and had just returned from a mission in Uganda. She told me that, over there, in their language they say “embawo” for “wood”. I immediately liked the soft and light sound, because wood becomes a flexible lightweight bag in my hands.

“Un giorno parlavo del mio progetto imprenditoriale con una mia amica che lavora all’Organizzazione Internazionale per le Migrazioni che era appena tornata da una missione in Uganda. Lei disse che in quella lingua “Legno” si dice “Embawo”. Mi è subito piaciuto quel suono morbido e leggero… perché il legno nelle mie mani diventa un materiale flessibile e lieve.

“Wood-based products are appreciated for their lower environmental impact than other synthetic materials, but real sustainability towards the environment depends on the sustainable management of forests. In fact, Embawo uses only certified wood. This means that forests of origin are managed sustainably, maintaining a balance between timber and forest growth: cut trees are replaced and the habitat is protected.

I prodotti a base legnosa sono apprezzati dalla società civile e dai consumatori per il minor impatto ambientale rispetto altri materiali sintetici, ma la loro reale sostenibilità nei confronti dell’ambiente dipende da una gestione sostenibile delle foreste. Infatti Embawo usa solo legno certificato. Questo vuol dire che le foreste di provenienza sono gestite in modo sostenibile in quanto esiste un giusto equilibrio tra la quantità di legname tagliato e la quantità che cresce in foresta, gli alberi tagliati vengono sostituiti da altri ripiantati, vengono tutelati gli habitat.

“I created EMBAWO when I started to work as a model in Milan, in 2007-2008. My idea was to keep and not to abandon my first passion: wood craftsmanship... which has been a big part of my personal history. At the meanwhile I was attracted and kept by the discovery of elegance and beauty. That’s how I decided to create something totally new: matching wood handcraft, fashion and design”.

Also the version “full leather” is available. In this case the fabrics can be found only in the interior lining. Origin of materials: All material used by Embawo are made in Italy. So, the leather comes from Milan; the wood from South Tirol, the canvas from Florence and the metal accessories from Varese.

Nell’autunno del 2013 il lancio di EMBAWO Eau de Parfum. Un nuovo profumo da viaggio creato in esclusiva per il marchio Embawo dalla maestra profumiera Claudia Scattolini. Es ist ein Reiseparfüm, in einer Flasche eingefasst aus Holz, designed und produziert von Embawo. Eine außergewöhnliche Geschenks Idee, die sich sehr gut mit einer Clutch Brieftasche in Kombination verschenken lässt.
