A tojásnak mint életszimbólumnak és mint tökéletes formának hosszú története és gazdag jelentésárnyalatai vannak mind a mitológiában, mind a képzo˝mu˝vészetben, de az építészetben és a fotográfiában is. A tojás, mint épületdíszíto˝ elem, az antik görög ión oszloprend párkányain tu˝nt fel, elképzelheto˝ , hogy eredetileg mágikus, bajelhárító céllal, hiszen az o˝sido˝kto˝l fogva a termékenység és a tavasszal újraéledo˝ természet szimbóluma volt. Általában egy olyan o˝scsíraként értelmezték, amelybo˝l késo˝bb a világ megszületett. Mint szilárd héjba zárt teljesség, kezdetto˝l az eltervezett teremtés jelképe, s az o˝ stojásból való világteremtés motívuma nemcsak az antik görög orfikus mítoszban, hanem a polinéziai, perui, kínai, indiai, föníciai, finn és szláv eredetmondákban is szerepel.

Avec sa forme parfaite, et en tant que symbole de vie, l’oeuf est, depuis toujours, riche en connotations dans le domaine de la mythologie, les beaux arts, l’architecture ainsi que la photographie. Comme ornement architectural l’oeuf apparaît pour la première fois dans les corniches des colonnes ioniques, vraisemblablement avec une fonction protectrice magique, car depuis l’antiquité l’oeuf symbolise la fertilité et le renouvellement de la nature au printemps. On l’a souvent vu comme germe ancien, duquel le monde est né. En tant que totalité, renfermée dans une coquille dure, on l’a vu comme symbole de la création délibérée. Le motif de la naissance du monde à partir d’un oeuf ancien se trouve non seulement dans la mythologie orphique grec, mais aussi dans les mythes de création polynésiens, péruviens, chinois, indiens, phéniciens, finnois et slaves. On y parle souvent du soleil et de la lune comme les Oeufs d’Or et d’Argent. De nombreux héros mythologiques sont nés des oeufs, et grâce à sa

With its perfect shape, and as a symbol of life, the egg has a long history of rich connotation in mythology, the fine arts, architecture and photography. The egg as a decorative feature in architecture first appears in the cornices of Ionic columns, presumably originally with a magical protective function, since from ancient times the egg has been a symbol of fertility and of the renewal of nature in the spring. It is often interpreted as an ancient seed-bud, from which the world was born. As a totality encapsulated in a hard shell it has been seen as a symbol of intentional creation. The motif of the birth of the world from an ancient egg is present not only in Greek Orphic mythology, but also in Polynesian, Peruvian, Chinese, Indian, Phoenician, Finnish and Slavic creation myths. The Sun and Moon are often referred to as the Golden and Silver Eggs. Many of the heroes of mythology were born from eggs, and due to its vital force the

Sírmellékletekben is gyakran megtalálható, hiszen a túlvilági utazáshoz ero˝ t adó táplálékként használták. A keresztény kultúrkörben a húsvéti népszokások révén összekapcsolódott Krisztus feltámadásával, s az Oltáriszentségre utal, de különös módon mindennek a képzo˝mu˝vészetben nincs nyoma. Egyedül a strucctojás fordul elo˝ gyakrabban olasz reneszánsz Madonna képeken, például Piero della Francesca alkotásán (Sacra Conversazione, 1472-74, Milánó, Brera), Mária szu˝zi anyaságának szimbólumaként. Ez a jelentés a Physiologus egy leírásán alapul, amely szerint a strucc tojását pusztán a napfény – a keresztény értelmezés szerint a Szentlélek – kelti ki. Vasari mu˝ vészéletrajzaiban is többször bukkan fel a tojás motívuma.

A travers les traditions folkloriques pascales l’oeuf s’associait dans la culture chrétienne à la résurrection du Christ et à l’eucharistie. Pourtant, il n’y a aucune trace de ce lien dans les beaux arts, à l’exception de l’oeuf de l’autruche que l’on voit assez souvent dans les Madones de la renaissance italienne, comme celle de Piero della Francesca (Sacra Conversazione, 14721474, Milan, Brera), en tant que symbole de la maternité de la Vierge Marie. Ce symbolisme est basé sur un passage dans le Physiologus, selon lequel l’oeuf de l’autruche éclot à l’aide du soleil, qui, dans la tradition chrétienne, est interprété comme l’Esprit Saint. Le motif de l’oeuf se trouve plusieurs fois dans les biographies des artistes écrites par Vasari. Selon son anecdote au sujet de Brunelleschi, par exemple, l’architecte a démontré, devant un comité, comment la coupole ovoïde de la cathédrale de Florence pouvait-elle supporter du poids, en cassant le bout d’un oeuf sur la table, de façon que la coquille restait debout sur la surface plate. The idea of the “philosophical egg” appeared in alchemy, later becoming a symbol of the ancient material identified as the philosopher’s stone. The yellow of the egg was identified with gold.

By means of Easter folk traditions it became associated in Christian culture with the resurrection of Christ and was linked to the Eucharist. However, there are no traces of this connection in the fine arts, with the exception of the ostrich egg, which occurs relatively frequently in Italian Renaissance Madonna paintings, such as that by Piero della Francesca (Sacra Conversazione, 147274, Milan, Brera), as the symbol of Mary’s virgin motherhood. This symbolism is based on a description in the Physiologus, according to which the ostrich egg requires sunshine to hatch, which, in the Christian tradition, is interpreted as the Holy Spirit. In Vasari’s biographies of artists the motif of the egg appears several times. For example, according to an anecdote about Brunelleschi, the architect convinced a committee about the weight-bearing capacity of the eggshaped cupola of the cathedral in Florence by smashing the end of an egg on a table so that the shell stood on the plane surface. In another amusing anecdote he lifted his arms in amazement and admiration while looking at a painting of Christ by his rival Donatello, 3

Bármennyire új médium is a fénykép, a fotográfiában lényegében ugyanazok a tojáshoz köto˝do˝ toposzok bukkannak fel újra, mint a mitológiában és a képzo˝mu˝vészetben. Csak a huszadik század alkotói újabb és újabb egyéni értelmezéseikben, a hagyományos rejtett szimbolizmussal szemben közvetlenebb kapcsolatot teremtenek a jelkép és a hozzá fu˝ zo˝ do˝ jelentések között.

Már a fotográfia kezdetekor, 1840 körüli dagerrotípiákon feltu˝nnek fiatal no˝ket és gyermekeket tojással a kezükben ábrázoló portrék és életképek. Az 1900-as évek populáris húsvéti üdvözlo˝lapjainak trükkös fotómontázsai – hatalmas tojásokat pólyás babákként tartó anyák és feltört tojásokból éppen elo˝bújó újszülöttek ábrázolásaival – ugyancsak a Madonna képek mintáját követve kapcsolják a motívumot a no˝i termékenységhez és a gyermekekhez.

Bien que nouveau comme moyen d’expression artistique, on trouve dans la photographie les mêmes motifs inspirés par l’oeuf que dans la mythologie et les beaux arts, à la différence que les artistes du vingtième siècle ont crée un rapport plus individuel et plus immédiat entre le symbole et sa connotation que ne l’a fait le symbolisme traditionnel caché. Sur les daguerréotypes faits vers 1840, c’est-à-dire dès le début même de la photographie, on trouve des images de jeunes femmes et d’enfants, tenant des oeufs dans la main. Les montages que l’on trouve sur des cartes de voeux de Pâques produites dans les années 1900 – mères tenant des oeufs géants dans leurs bras comme des nouveau-nés, et enfants qui sortent des oeufs éclos – lient le motif à la fertilité femelle et à la naissance, tout en suivant le modèle des Madones. Le thème apparaît plus tard aussi, par exemple dans l’oeuvre de C. Savine, dans laquelle on voit le ventre ovoïde d’une femme enceinte, qui fait référence aux motifs dans une oeuvre d’Egon Schiele, Famille (Série 24/95, 1996), ou bien dans les photographies d’Aleksandras Macijauskas, qui établissent un lien direct entre

In the Baroque age the egg was seen as the food of fasting, a symbol of abstinence, as in the bodegón paintings of Velázquez. In the neo-classicist era the egg, due to its simplicity, absolute formal clarity and plasticity, became the central motif in the paintings of the Valori plastici group, for example in works by Felice Casorati referring directly to Piero della Francesca.

Despite being a new medium, photography gave rise to the same egg-related topoi that are found in mythology and the fine arts, the only difference being that the artists of the twentieth century created a more individual and immediate relationship between the symbol and its connotations than did the traditional, hidden symbolism. On daguerreotypes produced in around 1840, that is, from the very beginnings of photography, one can find pictures of young women and children holding eggs. The photo montages featured on popular Easter greetings cards of the 1900s – mothers cradling huge eggs in their arms like new-born babies and babies crawling out of hatched eggs – connect the motif to female fertility and childbirth, while at the same time following the model of Madonna pictures. The topos also appears later, for example in C. Savine’s work depicting the egg-shaped stomach of an expectant mother, which reinterprets the motifs of Egon Schiele’s picture Family (Série 24/95, 1996), or in the photographs of Aleksandras

Mégis a jelen fotómu˝vészetében egyre inkább a tojás törékenységének, a lét veszélyeztetettségének témája kerül elo˝térbe. A törött tojáshéjak és a síró gyermekfej eredetileg vicces húsvéti kombinációja apokaliptikus jelentést kap például Arthur Tressnél, (Eggs Dreams, 1968) s hasonló értelmet hordoz a vízen elúszó tojáshéjak vanitas csendéletekhez illo˝ , egyéni motívuma Claude Alexandre 1990-es mu˝ vén. A kiállítás magyar anyagából is több munka kötheto˝ a „pusztulás képei” ikonográfiához, Detvay Jeno˝ tojásokat fenyegeto˝ en körülölelo˝ tu˝ zcsóvákat megjeleníto˝ drámai képe, Bányay Péter romhalmaz tetején tojást szürcsölo˝ vízköpo˝ -ördögének ironikus víziója vagy az ovális formát csontok tört lyukaiban és (halotti?) csipkében felfedezo˝ alkotásai. A világ végének és keletkezésének együttes megjelenítéseként értelmezheto˝ Gábor Eniko˝ „kozmikus tojás” ikonográfiát újraértelmezo˝, az o˝srobbanást megidézo˝ kiszáradt-elszenesedett tojása. A nemzetközi fotográfiában igen gyakori a tojás erotizálása, a termékenységet hordozó nemi szervekhez, heréhez, vaginához, no˝i mellekhez, fenékhez hasonlítása. A magyar mu˝vészek alkotásaiban a termékenységnek nem az erotizált emberi testhez köto˝do˝ képzetei dominálnak, például Baranyay

le corps nu de la femme et l’oeuf. Néanmoins, dans la photographie contemporaine c’est le thème de la fragilité de l’oeuf et de la vulnérabilité de la vie qui domine.

La juxtaposition traditionnelle pascale, originellement amusante, des coquilles éclose et enfants qui pleurent, acquiert une signification apocalyptique, par exemple dans l’oeuvre de Arthur Tress (Oeufs Rêves, 1968). Dans une photo de Claude Alexandre, faite en 1900, les coquilles qui flottent sur l’eau communiquent une signification pareille. Sur plusieurs d’entre les photos hongroises dans cette exposition on perçoit un lien avec l’iconographie de la destruction. Cela se voit, par exemple, dans l’image dramatique, crée par Jeno˝ Detvay, des oeufs entourés de flammes menaçantes. On le voit aussi dans l’image ironique de Péter Bányay, qui montre une gargouille, perchée sur un tas d’ordures, en train de sucer un oeuf. Il y a aussi ses oeuvres qui étudient la forme ovale dans les trous des os cassés et dans la guipure (d’un linceul?). L’oeuf séché et carbonisé dans l’ouvrage d’Eniko˝ Gábor peut être interprété en tant que représentation du commencement et de la fin du monde, une tentative de réinterprétation de l’iconographie de “l’oeuf cosmique”.

L’érotisation de l’oeuf est devenu banal dans la photographie internationale, où les oeufs sont associés avec les organes sexuels – les testicules, le vagin, les seins et les fesses. Parmi les artistes hongrois, pourtant, ce ne sont pas les images du corps humain érotisé qui dominent – on n’a que regarder l’ouvrage d’András Baranyay, par

Macijauskas, which make a direct connection between the naked female body and the egg. In contemporary photography, however, the topos of the fragility of the egg and the vulnerability of life has become dominant. The originally amusing Easter combination of broken eggshells and crying children is given an apocalyptic meaning, for example by Arthur Tress (Eggs Dreams, 1968), while in a work by Claude Alexandre from 1900, eggshells floating on water convey a similar meaning. Several works from among the Hungarian material in the present exhibition can be linked to the iconography of destruction. These include Jeno˝ Detvay’s dramatic image of eggs surrounded by menacing flames, and the ironic vision of Péter Bányay, in which a gargoyle sits on top of a heap of rubbish sucking an egg, as well as his works exploring the oval form in the holes in broken bones and in lace (on a shroud?).

Eniko˝ Gábor’s dried, charred egg can be seen as a representation of the beginning and end of the world, an attempt to reinterpret the iconography of the “cosmic egg”. The eroticisation of the egg has become a commonplace in international photography, in which eggs are likened to the sexual organs – to the testicles, vagina, breasts and buttocks. Among Hungarian artists, however, it is not images of fertility associated with the eroticised human body that dominate – as in the works of András Baranyay, which feature 5

A jelenkori fotómu˝ vészetben továbbélo˝ toposzok közül az egyik legero˝sebb az alkímiából örökölt „filozofikus tojás”. Ezt a motívumot értelmezi újra a klasszikus avantgárd fotók plasztikus testét síkba fordító, a sötét-világos ellentétben mozgató Vékás Magdi, a tojást a szögletes formák irányába kimozdító és tükörrel manipuláló, nárcisztikus testté alakító Herendi Péter és a látszólag azonos, mégis egyedi tojások konceptuális osztályozásával a szabályosság relatív voltára, az általánosítóuniformizáló szemlélet kérdésességére és az identitás problematikusságára rámutató Telek Balázs. Mindhárman a végletesen szabályosnak tu˝no˝ forma kibillentésével mutatnak rá ennek a valóban csodálatos képzo˝dménynek egyszerre racionális és irracionális voltára.

D’entre les thèmes qui ont survécu dans la photographie artistique contemporaine “l’oeuf philosophique”, hérité de l’alchimie, est l’un des plus importants. Le motif a été réinterprété par Magdi Vékás, en transformant le corps plastique de la photographie avant-gardiste classique en surface plane et en travaillant avec dans une opposition noir / lumière. Péter Herendi, qui contraint l’oeuf à prendre des formes anguleuses et le fausse avec des miroirs, le transforme en corps narcissique. En classant selon une classification conceptuelle des oeufs apparemment identiques mais quand même individuels, Balázs Telek attire l’attention sur la relativité de la régularité, sur l’aspect douteux d’une attitude qui cherche la généralité et l’uniformité, et sur la nature problématique de l’identité. En faussant la forme apparemment infiniment regulière de l’oeuf ces artistes mettent en valeur ce phénomène magnifique, quelque chose de rationnel et d’irrationnel en Traduction: Rachel & János HIDEG même temps.

an oval-shaped cut-out and human hands, symbolising human creativity and Creation; Imre Drégely’s genre pictures that combine the oval shape of Earth with a turtle, which in Chinese mythology is a symbol of the earth; and József Hajdú’s tea egg still lifes. Of the topoi that have survived in contemporary photographic art the “philosophical egg” inherited from alchemy is one of the most prevalent. The motif has been reinterpreted

by Magdi Vékás, by turning the plastic body of classical avant-garde photography into a plane and working with it in dark/light contrast. Péter Herendi, who pushes the egg into angular shapes and manipulates it with mirrors, turns it into a narcissistic body.

Balázs Telek, by conceptually classifying apparently identical but nevertheless individual eggs, calls attention to the relativity of regularity, to the questionability of a generalising and uniformising attitude, and to the problematic nature of identity. By disturbing the egg’s apparently infinitely regular form, these artists pay tribute to a truly magnificent phenomenon, something both rational and irrational at one and the same Translation: Rachel & János HIDEG time.
