BARBARA COLE

Barbara Cole’s artwork is extensively collected by both public and private institutions, and has been exhibited worldwide in such venues as the Canadian embassies in Washington, D.C. and Tokyo, Japan. Throughout her career, Cole has worked internationally on commercial projects and large-scale art commissions including installations for the Breast Cancer Centre in Toronto’s Princess Margaret Hospital and for Trump Hollywood, Florida. She has won prestigious awards such as the Grand Prize at the Festival International de la Photographie de Mode in Cannes, and third prize at the International Photography Awards in New York. Barbara Cole lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

An Introduction to the Underwater Photographic Art of Barbara Cole Although Barbara Cole has been a swimmer all her life, it took almost twenty years of working as a photographer before she brought her camera into the pool. That move marked the start of four distinctly unique aquatic series, each of which is represented in this book.

In the late 1990s, Cole learned that Polaroid would discontinue its SX-70 film, her primary medium and one that helped make her famous. For over a decade, she had used it to create lush, innovative, impressionistic images of gently idealized human forms. Working in a rich, tonally subtle photographic style reminiscent of nineteenthcentury pictorialists including Julia Margaret Cameron and Eugene Atget, Cole presented her subjects with faces that were often blurred or looking away from the camera. As she explains, “A viewer can’t get into a picture if somebody else is there.” While her photographs felt romantic, they were equally rooted in the tradition of Surrealism. Cole forged a style in which her eye for the aberrant brought an element of the unexpected into all her images and her name became synonymous with transforming the strange into profound otherworldly beauty.

In anticipation of Polaroid’s demise, and in search of new ways to use her camera in a more flexible and painterly manner, Cole began experimenting with Photoshop to make photographs that had the appearance of her SX-70 work. The process was a dead-end and one she rejected because of its artificiality. As Cole began to search for alternate routes, she remembered how awed she felt by water while swimming across its surface. The way it reflected skies, refracted the sun’s rays, muted sound, and transformed flesh into ethereal form had captivated her repeatedly.

Cole wondered if it might be possible to create the same sensuous properties of SX-70 film by taking pictures in a pool. To explore this idea, she made her first series, Underworld (2002). Focused on the distortion and altered reality of the submerged human form, the body of photographs was a natural extension of her SX-70 work, but it also marked a new direction. “With Underworld I began to understand the power of movement that happens in the landscapes of water,” says Cole.

She moved into an investigation of this topic in her next series, White NOise (2004), a collection of silvery-blue still images and lenticular works about aquatic action that create a bridge between still and moving pictures. Cole shifted her previous gaze from the water’s calm to the abrupt disturbance of “what happens when a figure jumps in it.” In these remarkable pictures, she captured what only the camera can record: that split second when a face breaks the water and separates its surface.

As Cole explains, she came to photography “through the back door.” After a teenage stint modeling for a variety of clients, including the Toronto Sun, she was hired first as the paper’s fashion reporter at only nineteen years of age, and then moved into the position of fashion editor. When Cole made the transition from journalism to the gallery world, she took her training as a fashion photographer with her. She began making fine art photographs with the same rigorous methodology that she used to conceptualize and art direct her commercial work.

This discipline of composition and planning is particularly evident in Cole’s next underwater series Chromatics (2010), in which she began thinking of a pool as a metaphor for a blank canvas. Employing her skills as an art director, Cole dressed models in solid hues and photographed them moving through the water as though they were splashes of paint dropped onto unprimed canvas. Inspired by the Abstract Expressionist artists Helen Frankenthaler, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman, Cole created painterly compositions in which she layered colour upon colour using only standard photographic tools. The series pushed the boundaries of in-camera photography, broadening our familiar understanding of water’s colour scheme beyond blue and white to present images that transformed the figurative into the abstract.

Cole’s most recent body of work, Two People Walking a Tightrope in an Ordinary Life Full of Extraordinary Moments (2012), continues her aquatic exploration of the human form, though once again she pioneered a new vision. Drawing inspiration from the Russian choreographer George Balanchine, the series investigates the nature of emotional gesture and expression within a relationship to convey in movement “a truth that can not be found in words,” says Cole. With her camera pointed upward, she chronicled a couple that stood above as they enacted lyrical scenes of joy and anger, remorse and isolation.

While Two People marks a remarkable fourth new exploration for Cole, her foray into making art beneath the water is far from coming to a close. A decade ago, when she entered the pool with her camera Cole immediately discovered how perfectly the water’s lens suited her sensibility. Not only did it allow her to represent things looking differently from how we think they should appear, it presented “so many ways to see things that you otherwise wouldn’t experience in life,” she says.

As her audience, we are fortunate that Cole has found in water a subject with such limitless possibilities. It means that we might look forward to new visions that merge the real and the fantastical and transport us to unique landscapes that could only take shape in Cole’s singular, robust imagination. sara angel

Une introduction à la photographie sous-marine de Barbara Cole Bien que Barbara Cole ait pratiqué la natation toute sa vie, ce ne fut qu’après une vingtaine d’années en tant que photographe qu’elle décida enfin d’amener son appareil avec elle sous l’eau. Ce changement amorça la création de quatre séries distinctes de photographies sous-marines, dont chacune est présentée dans ce livre. À la fin des années 90, la compagnie Polaroid décida de mettre un terme à sa production de pellicule SX-70, soit le medium de prédilection de Barbara qui fut à l’origine de sa célébrité. Pendant plus de dix ans, elle s’en servit pour créer des images uniques, raffinées et élégantes figurant des corps délicatement idéalisés. Privilégiant un style aux tonalités riches et subtiles qui n’est pas sans rappeler les pictorialistes du 19ème siècle Julia Margaret Cameron et Eugene Atget, les regards de ses modèles semblent s’estomper lorsqu’ils ne sont pas détournés. « Le spectateur ne peut s’approprier l’image si elle est déjà habitée par un autre » explique-t-elle. Alors qu’au premier abord ses photographies semblent empruntes d’un sentiment de romance, elles s’apparentent aussi à la tradition Surréaliste. Cole a créé un style dans lequel son goût pour l’incongru a permis d’ajouter à ses images des éléments inattendus ; Aujourd’hui, son nom évoque cette capacité unique à transformer l’étrange en une insondable beauté.

Anticipant la disparition de Polaroid, Barbara se mis à chercher des moyens d’utiliser son appareil photo de façon plus souple et picturale ; elle tenta alors d’obtenir avec Photoshop les mêmes effets que ceux donnés par les pellicules SX-70 pour finalement rejeter l’aspect par trop artificiel du procédé. Toujours dans sa quête d’alternatifs au Polaroid, il lui revint à l’esprit la béatitude qu’elle pouvait ressentir en nageant à la surface de l’eau. La façon dont le ciel s’y reflète, les rayons du soleil s’y réfractent, les bruits s’assourdissent et le corps se libère de la pesanteur, tout cela était à ses yeux une véritable source de fascination.

Elle se demanda alors s’il était possible de recréer cette même sensualité qui émane des pellicules SX-70 en prenant des photos depuis une piscine extérieure. De cette idée naquit sa première série, intitulée Underworld (2002). Centré sur la distorsion et les effets qu’engendre l’immersion sur le corps humain, l’ensemble de ces photographies lui apparu alors comme une extension naturelle de ses travaux au Polaroid. De même, ce fut pour l’artiste le début d’une nouvelle orientation. « Avec Underworld, je pris conscience de la puissance du mouvement dans des paysages d’eau », affirme-t-elle.

Déterminée à pousser ses recherches plus loin, elle entreprit une nouvelle série : White NOise (2004). Créant un point entre l’inertie et le mouvement, White NOise est un ensemble d’images statiques bleues argent et d’impressions lenticulaires explorant le thème du mouvement aquatique. Auparavant focalisée sur la sérénité de l’eau, elle s’intéressa ici au changement abrupt qui « se passe lorsque l’on plonge dedans ». Ces images étonnantes parviennent à capturer ce que seul un appareil photo peut saisir : cette fraction de seconde lorsqu’un corps casse la surface de l’eau et se fait engloutir dans sa masse.

Comme l’explique Barbara Cole, elle est entrée dans le monde de la photographie « par la petite porte ». Après une brève période de mannequinat pour divers clients incluant le Toronto Sun durant son adolescence, elle fut engagée par ce dernier en tant que reporter de mode. Rapidement, elle gravit les échelons pour devenir à l’âge de dix-neuf ans éditeur des pages Mode. Lorsque Barbara effectua la transition du journalisme vers le monde de l’art, elle conserva avec elle son expérience de photographe de mode. Elle commença à créer des œuvres avec cette même méthodologie draconienne qu’elle avait suivi pour conceptualiser et orchestrer son activité commerciale.

Cette rigueur dans la composition et l’organisation est particulièrement flagrante dans Chromatics (2010), sa série suivante, pour laquelle elle avait alors commencé à envisager la piscine comme une toile blanche. Faisant usage de ses talents de directrice artistique, elle vêtit ses modèles de couleurs unies et les prit en photo alors qu’ils évoluaient dans l’eau comme des gouttes de couleurs sur une toile vierge. Inspirée par les Expressionnistes Abstraits Helen Frankenthaler, Mark Rothko et Barnett Newman, Barbara réussit à composer des œuvres en superposant les couleurs les unes au-dessus des autres en ne faisant usage que d’outils photographiques traditionnels.

Avec cette série, elle a repoussé encore plus loin les limites de la photographie « in-camera » ; elle a élargi le lexique visuel de l’eau traditionnellement blanc et bleu, à des images qui font passer la figuration à l’abstraction.

Dans sa dernière série, Two People Walking on a Tightrope in an Ordinary Life Full of Extraordinary Moments (2012), elle continue d’explorer les différentes facettes de la figure humaine en action dans l’eau bien qu’une fois encore, elle ouvre de nouvelles voies. Influencée par le chorégraphe Russe George Balanchine, ce nouveau corpus examine la nature de l’expression et du mouvement émotionnels au sein d’une relation afin de traduire par le geste « une vérité qui ne peut être exprimée par les mots » explique-t-elle. Pointant son appareil vers la surface de l’eau, elle dresse la chronique amoureuse d’un couple qui se tient au-dessus d’elle. Ces derniers interprètent avec lyrisme des scènes de joie, de colère, de remords et enfin d’isolement.

Alors que Two People est un étonnant quatrième voyage pour Barbara Cole, son incursion dans le domaine de l’art sous-marin n’en s’est encore qu’à ses prémices. Dix ans plus tôt, alors qu’elle pénétrait dans l’eau avec son appareil photo en main, elle comprit instantanément à quel point le prisme naturel que forme l’eau convenait parfaitement à sa sensibilité. En plus de lui permettre de représenter les choses d’une façon autre que celle dont on s’imagine qu’elles devraient être, cela procure « d’infinies possibilités de les contempler sous un angle que nous ne pourrions observer dans la réalité ».

En tant que public, nous pouvons nous estimer chanceux qu’elle ait trouvé avec l’eau un sujet offrant autant de possibilités. Cela signifie que nous pouvons nous attendre à de nouvelles visions mêlant le réel et le fantastique tout en nous faisant voyager au sein de paysages uniques qui ne pourraient exister sans la remarquable imagination de Barbara Cole. sara angel

MAKING WAVES: FASHION’S INFLUENCE ON THE ARTWORK OF BARBARA COLE When it comes to fashion, it’s not the clothes that fascinate me, but rather the way they move through the world. The best fashion photographers of our time are the ones who manage to capture the poetry in just that. Over the past two and a half decades with Fashion Television, I’ve had the privilege of meeting countless photographic greats, and learned a thing or two about the art and craft of what makes a great photograph along the way. Of course, the bonus of forming a personal relationship with an artist is that they help you appreciate things in even more interesting new ways. When I first met Barbara Cole in the mid ‘80s, we were two expectant mothers working in fashion’s trenches—I, a TV journalist on a mission to pioneer new modes of observing and reporting on fashion, and Barbara, a photographer intent on taking the way we saw fashion to a mystical and artful higher ground. We immediately clicked and became fast friends. Beyond delighting in watching her children grow, I happily witnessed her creativity blossom. The worlds Barbara concocted for her backdrops, the subjects she chose, the stories she told, and her methods of delicately hand painting her images brought a signature romance to her work that was inspired and captivating.

Barbara’s prowess as a swimmer, passion for the water, and creative determination to push beyond conventional parameters eventually led her to experiment with underwater photography, with exhilaratingly beautiful results. Her models were ethereal mermaids, with flowing, floating hair and ghostly garments suspended in a space that felt light years away from the dimension the rest of us frequented. There was a marked timelessness to Barbara’s imagery that opted for mood over modernity. It added an artistic layer to the way we perceived designer creations that ultimately heightened the whole fashion experience.

Unique plays on perception have always informed Barbara’s work. When I was editing FQ magazine several years ago, she pitched an idea to me in which a talented young fashion illustrator, Lucian Matis, would paint images of runway dresses on Plexiglas, and then a nude model would stand behind the images, looking as though she was actually wearing these “painted on” garments. It was a notion filled with wit and whimsy, and the kind of fearless, cutting edge approach Barbara had become known for. We went with the concept, and the gorgeous pages she delivered resulted in one of the most innovative fashion editorials I had ever seen.

Imagination, courage, conviction and tenacity are all paramount to any photographer’s vision. Then there’s the necessary technical know-how—to tirelessly and almost obsessively labour over the mechanics and machinations of an approach in order to ensure a practical and compelling vocabulary with which to tell one’s fantastic story.

Barbara Cole has it all in spades. Now world renowned for her proficient and highly original underwater photography, she’s sailed through fashion’s fickle seas and come up with a mode of style imaging that is distinctively bold, beautiful and always memorable. On a personal note, Barbara’s inspired me to appreciate fashion’s potential to transcend material realism and evoke a true spiritual sensuality. Her provocative work never fails to offer an especially exquisite perspective through a hauntingly poetic lens.

MAKING WAVES: L’INFLUENCE DE LA MODE SUR L’ŒUVRE DE BARBARA COLE Lorsqu’il est question de mode, ce ne sont pas les vêtements qui me fascinent mais plutôt la façon dont ils prennent possession de l’espace dans lequel ils évoluent. Les meilleurs photographes de mode sont ceux qui parviennent à capturer la poésie qui émane de ces mouvements. Durant les vingt-cinq dernières années passées avec Fashion TV, j’eus le privilège de faire la connaissance de nombre de grandes figures de la photographie ainsi que l’occasion d’apprendre une chose ou deux sur ce qui constitue une bonne photo. Bien évidemment, l’avantage d’entretenir une relation plus personnelle avec un artiste réside en ce qu’il vous fait apprécier les choses avec un regard nouveau, un regard qui lui est propre.

Lorsque j’ai rencontré Barbara Cole au milieu des années 80, nous étions chacune enceintes, et travaillant dans les tranchées de la mode ; Moi, journaliste à la télévision tentant d’ouvrir de nouvelles brèches dans le domaine du reportage de mode, et Barbara, photographe résolue à porter notre compréhension de la mode à un niveau plus mystique et artistique. Le déclic fut immédiat et nous devinrent rapidement amies. En plus d’avoir vu ses enfants grandir, j’eus la chance de voir sa créativité s’épanouir. Les univers créés en toile de fond, les sujets choisis, les histoires relatées, ainsi que sa façon de peindre ses images à la main, tout cela contribua à créer le charme captivant et inspiré de son œuvre.

Les prouesses de Barbara en tant que nageuse, associées à sa passion pour l’eau et sa détermination à aller au-delà des conventions, l’amenèrent à expérimenter la photographie sous-marine. Les résultats furent tout simplement exaltants. Ses modèles - sirènes éthérées aux chevelures fluides et aériennes, vêtues de tissus vaporeux flottent dans un espace situé à des années-lumière de notre quotidien. Il y a dans l’imagerie de Barbara une forme d’intemporalité qui par-delà la modernité, privilégie l’ambiance. C’est précisément cela qui, en ajoutant une dimension artistique à la façon dont nous percevons les vêtements de créateurs, porte l’expérience de la mode à un niveau plus élevé.

Barbara a toujours aimé jouer avec notre sens de la perception. Lorsque je travaillais à la rédaction de FQ magazine il y a de cela quelques temps, elle me souffla l’idée de faire appel à un jeune illustrateur de mode, Lucian Matis, pour qu’il peigne des robes haute couture sur des panneaux de plexiglas par la suite placés devant des mannequins nues de façon à créer l’illusion qu’elles portaient réellement ces « vêtements peints ». C’était typiquement le genre d’approche fantaisiste et audacieuse pour laquelle elle est aujourd’hui reconnue. Le concept fut approuvé et les magnifiques pages qu’elle nous remis par la suite sont ce que je considère comme l’un des éditoriaux de mode les plus novateur à ce jour.

L’imagination, le courage, la conviction et la ténacité sont tous des composantes essentielles à la vision artistique d’un photographe. À cela s’ajoutent les connaissances techniques, soit un labeur sans relâche et à la limite de l’obsession afin de maîtriser tous les aspects mécaniques qui composent le vocabulaire d’une histoire fantastique.

De tout cela, Barbara en a à la pelle !

Aujourd’hui mondialement reconnue pour la qualité et l’originalité de ses photographies sous-marines, Barbara a navigué sur les eaux inconstantes de la mode avant d’ancrer son style très personnel : un style esthétique, audacieux et toujours mémorable. Sur un plan plus personnel, elle m’aura permis de mieux appréhender la capacité de la mode à transcender le réalisme matériel pour exprimer une authentique sensualité spirituelle. Son travail ne cessera jamais de nous dévoiler une perspective unique et envoûtante au travers de son objectif chargé de poésie.

BARBARA COLE

Barbara Cole’s artwork is extensively collected by both public and private institutions, and has been exhibited worldwide in such venues as the Canadian embassies in Washington, D.C. and Tokyo, Japan. Throughout her career, Cole has worked internationally on commercial projects and large-scale art commissions including installations for the Breast Cancer Centre in Toronto’s Princess Margaret Hospital and for Trump Hollywood, Florida. She has won prestigious awards such as the Grand Prize at the Festival International de la Photographie de Mode in Cannes, and third prize at the International Photography Awards in New York. Barbara Cole lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
