Nowadays, the global art scene has established a dynamic industrial ecology. At the same time, the East Asian cultural sphere has increasingly gained worldwide attention. As a former Portuguese colony, Macau is a unique intersection of Chinese and Portuguese culture. The local people of Macau, both Chinese and foreigners, show an instinctive spirit that stems from the Wei and Jin dynasties, which is externalised as a laid-back and carefree attitude to life. Moreover, the old town of Macau has always been considered a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and to enjoy a moment of tranquillity. Due to the limitation of land area and population, there are very few Macau artists and they are seen as a minority in the East Asian cultural sphere. After the transfer of sovereignty, land reclamation and increase in tourism, Macau’s local artists witnessed a time of great change. Despite limits in resources, Macau artists express a sense of independence and diversity and although Macau contemporary art is seen as a minority, it plays a pivotal role within the global art scene. Along with the Macau Visual Arts Industry Association, the idea for Trace Element - Macau Contemporary Art Now was developed to incorporate three stops: Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai, to highlight the main features of Macau contemporary art at the three most important cities of Greater China. Trace Element, Hong Kong will introduce artists who specialise in traditional artistic media, such as painting and sculpting. At the same time, the exhibition aims to spark more opportunities for Macau artists on an international scale and introduce more local talents from different artistic disciplines. Apart from examining the context of Macau contemporary art, this series of exhibitions will also focus to foster talented 5
art administrators and in addition, further explore the Asian art scene and re-examine Macau contemporary art and its position within a global perspective. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to our coorganisers Galerie Ora-Ora and Macau Visual Arts Industry Association for their expertise and support. I would also like to thank the participating artists for their continuous cooperation and our sponsor Instituto Cultural do Governo da R.A.E. de Macau for their generosity, without which this exhibition could not be possible.

Co-organised with Macau Visual Arts Industry Association and sponsored by Instituto Cultural do Governo da R.A.E. de Macau, Trace Element – Macau Contemporary Art Now has landed in its second stop – Hong Kong, featuring phenomenal artworks of seven contemporary Macau artists. Initiated by curator Gary Mok, the idea Trace Element aims to unveil the reinvigorated gem beneath the city of Macau, showcase Macau contemporary art in one of the most important Asian art hubs, and more importantly, re-examine its position within a global perspective. Sino-Portuguese relations have woven a rich history within the city of Macau, the diverse mixture between the two has created a culturally distinct, yet thriving community. This environment nourished a generation of artists with renewed energy, specifically – the urge to explore, a deepened concern about local heritage and a drive to breakthrough boundaries. Spanning from a wide range of media and techniques, the selected artworks express a sense of peculiarity and retrospection to its historical traits, inviting viewers to re-examine the distinctiveness and diversity of Macau contemporary art. Galerie Ora-Ora is honoured to be part of Trace Element exhibition series; it has always been our mission to contribute, enhance and create a vibrant art community, both locally and internationally. We look forward to more collaborations with art communities who share the same passion, and together, promote sustainable arts and cultural development within Asia. Creation can be seen as a dialogue. Artworks can create conversations by developing individual thoughts into collective ideas. Much like, “a straw shows which way the wind blows”, a minuscule thought can grow into a phenomenon, emphasising the power of a “trace element”. We are excited the artists of Trace Element have expressed boundless creativity and diversity within this exhibition – surpassing their origin and now entering a regional scope. We want to take this opportunity to thank our co-organiser Galerie Ora-Ora for their support and hard work in putting together Trace Element, Hong Kong, and our sponsor Instituto Cultural do Governo da R.A.E. de Macau for the generosity. Last but not least, we would like to show our gratitude to Mr. Mok Wai Hong for his expert curation. Macau Visual Arts Industry Association

Ann Hoi (b. 1985) moved to Canada in 2001 and obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking Art from Ontario College of Art and Design University. Hoi has participated in various local and international group exhibitions, including Macao Scenario – Animamix Biennale (Macau, 2014), VIVA (Lisbon, 2014) and Affordable Art Fair, Hong Kong and New York (2013). Hoi currently resides in Macau and continues with her artistic creations, focusing on the artistry of paper sculptures. Her works induce the notion of fetishism in man-made objects, which is an aura often idealised, mystified and romanticised. An object created by humans is a manifestation of a metaphysical anima, an allusion as a representation of reality, and foremost, a reflection on what we are as human beings. THE RITUAL 儀式 Paper 紙本 130 x 30 x 30 cm 2012
