AILEEN LANUZA
IN THE MIDST OF THIS WIDE QUIETNESS
“In the Midst of this Wide Quietness” amplifies the poised yet powerful qualities of the female identity, illustrating the boundless charisma of a woman reinforced with a bouquet of intricately painted flowers. By combining these two concepts, Aileen Lanuza demonstrates how the mystique can be communicated with wondrous subtlety.
For Aileen Lanuza’s latest exhibit, the works comprise an assemblage of enchanting women and flowers in full bloom of nature and its muse These are subjects that the artist has passionately mastered throughout her artistic career, with each work respectively bringing out different aspects in terms of style, custom, and reference.
Aileen Lanuza focuses on the eyes of her muses, graced with a garden of vibrantly painted flowers. She elicits a more profound notion in these compositions: much like how she paints her flowers in layers of color, her female subjects also carry layers of emotion through their captivating gaze behind the floral embellishments, leaving us spectators to ponder and decipher
Aileen Lanuza’s works demonstrate how a woman’s mystique extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of gender appropriation. Completing her studies at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, her works are characterized by an atmosphere of the floral motif in which a sense of tenderness plays an important role. By making female portraits as subject matter, she expresses a current commentary on feminist values. Her works serve as an amplification of the new norms, making them a form of resistance against the logic of the misogynistic system
AILEEN LANUZA
Aileen Lanuza (b 1981) entered the University of the Philippines Diliman to study fine arts majoring in visual communication in 1999. Come 2008, she held her first one man show and has been part of auctions and publications the same year. Aileen’s style has consistently focused on women and the female experience; from realistic Filipinianas and pop art homages, to impressionistic self portraits and enigmatic figures, she invites her audience to contemplate the emotion and context of her subjects. She conveys the careful balance between stillness and strength – the inherent power of the feminine to be both soft and strong. Often surrounded by flora, Aileen’s women stare straight into the viewer’s eyes. Depicting both tenderness and strength in one picture is what makes Lanuza one of the most sought after Filipino contemporary artists today
