NEWS AND... KEY DRIVERS OF FORD FLEET OPERATIONS

NEW JEEP GLADIATOR LAUNCHED RECENTLY

GOODYEAR'S BIGGEST 24 HRS OF LE MANS

Ford South Africa recently extended its reach into the local fleet business sector with significant purchases by iconic and entrepreneurial businesses including Netcare 911, Supercare and South African Farmers Development Association (SAFDA). This fleet activity highlights the versatility, quality and trust that local companies have come to expect from Ford vehicle ranges such as the Ranger pickup, Everest SUV and Transit MPV/van, with a view to maximising efficiency, reducing any downtime and optimising fleet operations at a time when both budgets and vehicle or fleet running costs are under extreme pressure.

Legendary 4x4 capability and authentic design builds on a rich pickup heritage to create the 2022 Jeep Gladiator. Offering clever functionality and versatility, an advanced and fuel-efficient powertrain, plus open-air freedom, the new Gladiator is also loaded with many safety features and intuitive technology to make it a compelling bakkie for the South(ern) African market. The all-new Jeep Gladiator has a host of innovative safety and advanced technology features - which we will give you more details of in our next edition as we were kindly invited to the local dealer launch by M+Z Jeep & Fiat group at their Windhoek showroom.

Goodyear's second year as the exclusive tyre partner to the LMP2 category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans delivered unshakable performance, durability, and consistency. The 27 cars in the LMP2 class began the race on Goodyear tyres, two more than last year, when Goodyear began its exclusive partnership to the category in the FIA World Endurance Championship and European Le Mans Series. The operation supplied teams with tyres, operational and setup support. This was Goodyear's biggest Le Mans operation since 2020. 2022 also saw the company service the largest number of cars since 1979 when 31 cars started on Goodyear.

JUN - JUL 2022

the NamWheels

top5

FRONT PAGE CAR BRANDS

Welcome to a regular NamWheels feature: our top 5 car-related list. Except that this time, it’s not a top 5 list like we usually feature... this list shows the brands which appeared on our NamWheels covers (front pages) over the years, ranked in descending order from the most to the least. Please note that the brands are listed alphabetically with preference to those which made it into print; as opposed to these online editions. Feel free to send us your comments or feedback: info@namwheels.com

OPEL

Over 30 editions of NamWheels, Mercedes-Benz, Opel and Volkswagen have appeared three times (each) on the cover page but all instances of Merc or VW were on digital editions so we’ve awarded first place to Opel.

The Opel Adam appeared on Edition 2... which prompted us to use local photos from there on. Then, a jet black Opel Mokka graced Edition 5 while the same car also adorned our very first digital edition, lucky number 13.

MERCEDESBENZ & VW

Our next two brands are also German; which may have something to do with the friendly dealers in our nation’s capital... Like Opel, these brands had three appearances each; although they were all in digital editions.

Mercedes-Benz vehicles appeared in issue Nr. 15 (Mike Horn G-Class), Nr. 23 (CLS53 AMG) and Nr. 25 (E200 AMG Line). Volkswagens had a straight hat-trick in editions 17, 18 and 19 with Amarok V6, Golf GTi and Spirit of Amarok.

AUDI, ISUZU LAND ROVER & SUZUKI

These four brands were featured on our front page two times each: Audi, Isuzu and Suzuki were all in print while Land Rover made one printed and one digital appearance. In order of appearance, the Audi S3 sedan stood at

the Christuskirche in edition 4, an Audi Q7 blasted through the desert in Nr. 6, a red Isuzu KB graced issue 7 while its update went dune-driving in issue 12. The final-edition Defender appeared in edition 10 while a new Defender 90 horsed about Nr. 28.

CHEVROLET HYUNDAI, KIA TATA, TOYOTA

Now we get to the brands whose vehicles were only featured once (so far) on our NamWheels cover page. All of these apparances were on crisp white news print paper and happened in the following order:

Kia Koup - Edition 1 Tata Bolt - Edition 9 Toyota Fortuner - Edition 11 Hyundai Tucson - Edition 14 Chevrolet Trailblazer - Edition 16

ALFA, HAVAL, HONDA, JAC, MAZDA & MITSUBISHI

Last but certainly not least are six of our favourite brands which appeared only once; but on one of our online editions only. These vehicles include in order of apperance - a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport for issue 20, Honda’s new Civic Type R in issue 22,

a Mazda CX-30 overlooking Windhoek in edition 24, M+Z Motors’ wildly branded Alfa Romeo Giulia for Nr. 26, a dirty JAC bakkie at Sossusvlei in issue 27 and a gleaming red metallic Haval Jolion in our previous issue, Nr. 29.

MISSING BRANDS Never mind the Lamborghinis or Ferraris of this world, have you noticed that some more regular brands are missing from this list? The reasons why we haven’t used BMW, Ford or Volvo on the front page include not getting any cars or launch invites, bad timing (for publishing) or availability of pics and press cars at the time.

Tucson

Hyundai

Text: Nico Boshoff Images: Hyundai Automotive S.A.

Hyundai SA recently released their new Tucson and we were privileged to attend the day event at Century City in Cape Town.

Most of the time, pictures of a new model don’t do it justice until you see it in the lesh; or metal to be precise. The new Hyundai Tucson was no exception. Apart from a futuristic angular design, my irst observation of the new 4×2 SUV, was the low stance it has. With surely a low sitting COG (center of gravity), I was looking forward to driving it, as I was expecting a dynamic ride.

We headed out towards Riebeeck Kasteel in the 8-speed auto diesel derivative and from the get-go, it was clear that the diesel had much more grunt than really needed to overcome gravity on a steep hill. The front tyres on our car squealed more than once during normal get-aways, but we later found out that it wasn’t just the punchy diesel, but also the pressures sitting at 2.8 bar all round.

Later in the presentation, it was con irmed that this new Tucson was the widest in its class at 1865mm, hence the low stance in appearance.

I was kind of worried about hitting the sinkplaat corrugations on gravel roads with those overly in lated 235/55/19 tyres, but was then pleasantly surprised by the effect of the new damper design on the shocks.

With the new Tucson, you will have a choice of two power plants, a 2.0 petrol (115 kW / 192 Nm) and a 2.0 diesel (137 kW / 416 Nm).

The wheel arches also have extra sound deadening materials incorporated in the plastic inner linings above every wheel.

That clearly results in less cabin noise, as we have experienced ourselves. After enjoying a lovely lunch at The Barn in Riebeeck, we headed back to our starting point in Cape Town. The new Tucson is certainly a looker, especially in darker colours where the rear lights blend in much more luently into the angular design theme of the whole car. It’s as dynamic as expected, with a car-like feel on the road, while it’s very happy as well on a dirt road. I think the competition has a serious problem, as this car comes loaded with features, starting from a price tag of about R525,000. Watch out, Germans! There’s a new Korean in town.

SAFETY

CHOOSING THE RIGHT

TYRES As one of the most important components on a vehicle, choosing the right tyres is absolutely vital. We hope to help with this little guide... CONDITION

MORE SIZES

The very first thing we need to note is that you should always - always - buy new tyres because you simply can’t tell what condition a used tyre (or set of tyres) is in.

If you’re still unsure, best ask the dealership, a reputable workshop or the experts at leading tyre retailers. They will also be able to assist you in calculating correct sizes for new wheels or other aftermarket modifications.

There are very few exceptions to this rule like a farm bakkie only cruising around the plaas or a little hatchback mainly trundling to the village shop once a week. But if you, like most of us, drive at different speeds and on varying roads, you should always replace worn tyres with brand new ones.

Tyres come with many different ratings for their maximum speed or load, be sure you match (or surpass) the recommended values of your vehicle.

SIZE

APPLICATION

The next thing you should pay attention to is the correct size of tyre for your vehicle and/or fitted wheels. Most vehicles will display these specs in the user/owner manual, plus there’s your big friend: the internet.

It goes without saying that you don’t have to buy snow tyres in Namibia... or a set of mudterrains for your granny’s sedan. If you are not certain, just ask the staff at any tyre shop!

JUN - JUL 2022

THE BASICS • Always buy NEW tyres. • Fit the same size and spec as before, or check the values in your car’s user manual. • Make sure you purchase the correct size if your vehicle has aftermarket rims or modifications. • Match (or exceed) the load and speed ratings of your current tyres.

SPEED AND LOAD RATING

• Don’t go overboard with new tyres - you don’t need mud terrains for the local shopping mall. • Ask the experts at your nearest tyre shop, they may also recommend new or different brands.

Toyota Land Cruiser

Text: Hanjo Stier Images: Nico Boshoff

Prado 2.8GD VX-L Large Toyota SUV's are loved by the entire nation, full stop. Or do you get people who are not fond of them? You should know: Umm, I used to be one of them. Big Toyotas are a-dimea-dozen and I can think of countless alternatives in the crazy avalanche of modern SUV's. But if I think about it, having to cover vast distances in an inhospitable place like Namibia, any large Toyota makes perfect sense. More info: I'm also often saddened by the unhealthy amount of Prados on my daily Kindergarten run but assume that Mumsy's big white Jap is also used for epic road trips and proper 4x4-ing during the holidays. Maybe Papa shuttles a couple of mountain bicycles to remote areas or grootsus tows a horsebox every now and then?

Why you shouldn't: Did I just type “horsebox”? At this point I wanted to tell you about the Prado's ancient construction, desperate botox design attempts, shotgun dashboard layout or heavy handling but one of my loved ones spotted this VX-L, shoved me aside and gently caressed the enormous 4x4 with sparkling eyes. What else? The price tag of 1.25 bar didn't matter, nor did the mediocre performance or fuel consumption (for a turbo-diesel) because this horsey girl just did an automotive swipe right. So I kept criticising, including the 7-seater's impractical city parking manners or expensive suspension components. Nope. To her, there are only Prados and everything else.

Why you should: OK, besides the perceived reliability and resale of this brand and vehicle, the 2.8 VX-L packs serious technology like adaptive cruise control, ventilated front seats and seriously clever off-road modes. Each new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is also sold with a 3-year/100,000km warranty and 9-interval/90,000km service plan.

FULL SPEC SHEET 2,755cc i-4 turbo-diesel Engine: Drive Train: 6-sp Automatic, 4WD 150kW / 500Nm Power / Torque: 7.9L/100km* Avg consumption: 10.82 seconds 0-100km/h: No claim Top speed: R1,225,000 List Price: * manufacturer claims

LAUNCH REPORT

Suzuki

JUN - JUL 2022

Celerio Text: Franco Theron & Nico Boshoff Images: Suzuki Automotive S.A.

We attended the South African launch of Suzuki’s new Celerio and it’s set to be something rather special in these trying times... the fuel saver everyone needs!

The brand-new Suzuki Celerio was recently launched and it takes to the Southern-African market with quite an ambitious claim. Should Suzuki’s claimed fuel consumption be correct, the Celerio will be the most fuelef icient car on the current market. Whether we like it or not, current global affairs are forcing oil prices to skyrocket, with many sources fearing that prices in South Africa (and Namibia) might exceed the R40 mark by the end of 2022. Just over R25 currently, this will be a very worrying igure for many citizens. However, Suzuki is con ident that their new Celerio will come to our immediate rescue. Set to be even more fuel-ef icient than the proven outgoing model, this new Celerio will

“…only 4.2l / 100km.”

Being cheaper than the Swift, yet more expensive than the S-presso, the Celerio will start off at R174 900 for the GA model, with the GL manual selling for R194 900 and the GL automatic for R209 900.

To put this into perspective, many new hybrids (selling for more than twice as much as the Celerio), are only capable of 5.0 litres per 100km.

The bottom-spec GA model even comes with air conditioning, power steering, keyless start, rear parking sensors, dual front airbags, ISOFIX seat anchors and ABS with EBD.

deliver a claimed fuel consumption of only 4.2l / 100km.

Currently, other light fuel consumers such as the Renault Kwid, Peugeot 108, Hyundai Atos, as well as even Suzuki’s own Espresso delivers a igure just above 5 litres per 100km. Some might think that something has to give, but the Celerio has in fact grown in size and is now much longer (95mm) and wider (55mm) than its predecessor. This results in a boot space just under the 300 litres mark.

The GL models will feature the standard GA speci ications, as well as 15 inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, electric windows, central locking, hill hold control and a 7 inch infotainment touchscreen with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay / Android Auto. Stay tuned for more information about our recent driving experience with the Celerio.

Text & Images: Nico Boshoff

Volvo XC90 B5 AWD Volvo is attempting to extend the fairly dated XC90 range by adding new engines which are even more friendly towards the environment,… or is that just me. Well that is my take on it. I might be wrong. Quietly they have dismissed all diesel models through the wash bay at the back of each show room without too much media coverage on that. Again, mother earth on the outside was screaming for more breathing space, but what about us inside? Lets talk about current models. Even to some of us journalists it was also a surprise to not see any diesels in showrooms. Yes, my colleague and I, we visit our local Volvo dealer for some inely crafted coffee beans… And it so happened that with our last round of lat whites, there was a car plugged in, waiting for its next test ride: the XC40 Recharge, beautiful!

And as for all other new Volvos, suddenly the letter T or D does not apply anymore. Every darn possible letter of the alphabet was replaced with a B: B5 and B6, that replaces the T5 and T6, and then diesels as mentioned, you will only ind on Volvo’s approved second-hand loor. We recently drove the B5 derivative (182 kW / 350 Nm) in the XC90. It employs a mild hybrid system, which you are aware of when you start the car. The engine kind-of rolls on, rather than getting help from the starter motor.

But that’s where it ends with regards to driver experience if one has to focus on electric support. The engine is always on when driving. Don’t get me wrong. The car is silky smooth to perfection, but it’s not a completely different car when compared to a T5. Power is virtually the same, and enough for the normal A to Z driver. The enthusiast will have to look at the B6 if more dynamism is expected. We are quite curious to when this wolf is being replaced by what we believe will be a completely new version of the future.

Peugeot

Landtrek

Text: Hanjo Stier Images: Peugeot South Africa

I detest click-bait. Blatantly luffed-up pieces that waste time to impart no more than a few seconds of valuable information. So, in order to not string you along: this Peugeot bakkie is not that great.

Let me quantify that for you. If you own or desire a Toyota Hilux or Ford Ranger, you may want to give this fashionable newcomer a skip. It's certainly not as accomplished, de initely not as powerful and most probably quite a pain to live with… seeing that we have no Peugeot dealers in Namibia.

Peugeot claims 0-100km/h in a shocking 15.9 seconds but this is where I have the irst bit of good news for you. After just two runs with our Racelogic PerformanceBox, we managed a best time of 13.52 seconds. While that's still in the bottom echelons of our D/C bakkie performance charts, at least it's not dead last.

What this Peugeot lacks in dealer support or schoolboy brand loyalty it makes up with refreshing style and modern gadgets. Much like its abovementioned interesting brethren, the cockpit of this vehicle is a glorious orgy of dancing lines, daring shapes and dazzling textures. Never mind all the tech.

Nonetheless, my colleagues and I spent an entire week with this fairly new press vehicle in order to tell you what it would be like to own. And as luck would have it, one of NamWheels' old friends had just returned this double-cab from a 3-day marathon trip to the Skeleton Coast.

In fact, it's shoulder-to-shoulder (at least in theory) with the Mahindra PikUp S11 Karoo; a rustic but loveable brute whose power I called “adequate” after adding 6,300km to its overall mileage. So, just like that Indian double-cab, this French one simply demands an extra degree of planning for fast journeys.

Just a few highlights, between angles and switchgear that could make a Cruiser owner faint at 50 paces, are six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, digital climate control, lane assist, LED headlights, 3-way drive mode, voice commands, keyless access, rear parking sensors and camera, as well as a large touchscreen media system with navigation.

Despite a lack of grunt, everything went well.

What this means is that, if you're a complete speed demon, stop reading right here and move on to something with substantially more ire power. However, should you not care too much about a bakkie's performance and still be interested in this Landtrek, I'll do my best to spit out a few more random observations.

In keeping with my hatred of delayed info grati ication, that is another huge problem most people will identify in this half-Asian, half-European creation: its engine. At the time of publishing this piece, the LandTrek is only shipped with one power plant: a 1910cc inline 4-cylinder turbo-diesel. This engine develops 110kW at 4,000rpm or 350Nm from 1,800 to 2,800rpm, driving the rear rubber (Allure model) or all four wheels (this 4Action derivative) via a traditional but perfectly acceptable 6-speed automatic gearbox. There is currently no factory- itted diff lock available for these vehicles.

It's quite fancy, this thing. Farmers and construction workers will be better served by an Isuzu or Mahindra, while fashionable or eccentric individuals may step right up for a closer look. In the bakkie world of interesting designs – which, admittedly, is a tiny place – my new order is Triton, new BT-50 and this Landtrek.

The amount of outright punch and twisting power from this machine would've been absolutely acceptable in a 1.9L Volkswagen TDi passenger car just a few years ago. More than acceptable, actually. But when you strap this slightly noisy motor to a chunky doublecab bakkie weighing at least 2 tons… the results are mediocre.

Perhaps the brand-new Mazda double-cab is more handsome, I'll leave that decision up to you, as both these newbies are gambling quite severely on the appeal of their looks. It's my irm belief that, at this point in time, they'll garner a few sales in trendy suburbs, or the odd die-hard fan, but be mercilessly teased by the rest of the country.

The list goes on, which is a good thing because the price is a saw point... at roughly R690,000 it's more expensive than a PikUp or D-Max but offers similar performance. I’ll credit this Pug with superior style and goodies. Go for the 4x2 model and the price sinks to R600,000. Is this good enough to knock Toyota or Ford off their perch? Of course not. It may suf iceto tickle a few units away from the lesser-known brands and then there's that whole inal-nail affair of not having any dealers in our Land of the Brave. For that kind of money, I vote you get the excellent Mitsubishi Triton. As a inal footnote, we gave this press vehicle to our retired senior journalist who adores the lion brand and tells gushing stories of 404 bakkies. His eventual impression of this new model was one of severe dismissal. The Peugeot Landtrek is neither desirable nor innovative; save its design. Hello, X-Class and BT-50: yet another doublecab bakkie nobody wanted.
