INTRODUCTION

Designing is a process. It requires the human mind to think critically about space and the gestures projected upon it. Space is a value that can be manipulated by a series of complex analysis and synthesized into a simple expression. In this studio we explored an iterative design process that considers ecological processes and emergent spaces.

PROJECT 1 | PIECES +PARTS

During this first project, we explored craft and scale as a foundation for the entire course. We found that there are 273 spatial combinations from the moster we created. Each student was recquired to combine spatial combinations and varying slopes for 6 pieces. We were allowed to have one accent color, which gave way for no overwhelming projects. The forms created from using tiny pieces became a great way to become engaged with the scale we would be working with at the end. Pieces and parts was a great introductory for the phases to come.

PROJECT 2 | MAPPING + RECON

During Phase 2, students visited the site to really understand what processes are present and what this site has to offer. We noticed this is a very lively neighborhood but strange and confusing for it’s fenced off body of water. What new opportunities could emerge after our observations? What is the existing conditions and how can we use them to our advantage? We created mappings of the Silver Lake Resivoir, layering information to present our research in a way thats not to be understood from a first glance. Intead it should be interpreted by the designer to express specific interest and a well rounded view.

PROJECT 3 | TAXONOMY OF EMERGENT SPATIAL TYPES

Project 3 was an intensive model making crash course in and of itself. We explored a matrix of typologies that explore the littoral edge and how it can be manipulated through a series of rules. Design id driven by rules, rules from research and observation. Further, we explored a combination of 6 rules individually to create a model whose scale is close to the scale we would be working on with our final project. The resivoir was split into 23 sections, which were then divided in two for partners. Emergent typologies emerged. Did i mention this was a siteless exploration? Even so, our explorations can can be applied to any littoral edge.

PROJECT 4 | THE SILVER CORPSE The final phase of this studio was to go back to the sections we were given and create an emrgence space derived by rules and previous explorations. The Silver Lake has emerged from each section and is a metaphor for the larger urban fabric. My design focuses on circulation for the elderly and for the Monarch. I do this trhough points of rest guiding both. If I were to re-attend a further iteration of the project I would do a more thourough observation of the way elderly people walk and sit. I would watch their rhythym. And apply that to the pathway to further enhance their stimulation.
