WELCOME TO

Gallatin "As someone who was born and raised in Gallatin, I am excited to showcase our city."

W

elcome to the 2022 Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce City Guide. I am Justin Hays, Chairman of the Gallatin Area Chamber. I am so glad you found your way to our guide. There are a lot of great things going on in Gallatin, and the Chamber is working hard to serve this community and its businesses. As someone who was born and raised in Gallatin, I am excited to showcase our city. In my line of work, I get asked quite often about Gallatin. When this question is asked, it brings a smile to my face. You see, I love to talk about our city. The first thing I tell them is that we have some of the best restaurants a city has to offer. Whether you want to dine on the water, in a historic home, or down around our awesome square, we have you covered. Next, I will mention how our community is growing and all the new things that are a part of that growth. I never fail to also discuss our rich history and all the spots to stop by and learn more about Gallatin. “Do you like to have fun?” Of course, they do, so I fill them in on all our wonderful parks and beautiful lakes. I find myself ultimately saying, “just take a drive around and see what Gallatin really has to offer.” I tell them that when you are driving around, look for the “Gallatin Chamber” neon sign. I let them know that this is the Chamber of Commerce building and that should be their first stop. In that building, they will find the best Chamber there is. The people inside will get them welcomed, offer them resources, inform them on how to get involved, and connect them with others. It is those connections, resources, and engagements that this very guide will show. Please enjoy our city guide, and the next time someone asks you about Gallatin, I hope it puts a smile on your face.

CULTIVATING COMMUNITY

blooming where planted

I

f you’ve been around Gallatin any amount of time, there’s a good chance you’ve picked up on a vibe that stands out against the rest. When newcomers - both businesses and individuals alike - encounter Gallatin, they make note of it, too. But what is it? What is Gallatin’s secret sauce that keeps folks coming back or staying here, putting down roots?

treasures, the best people around, and deep ties to tradition, are opportunities to cultivate community all year long. From coming together to support one another, local businesses, and worthy causes to countless community events - many of which have become highly favored and long-standing traditions - the opportunities to connect in Gallatin are endless.

Sure, the proximity to boom-city Nashville, options for city, country, or lakefront living, low tax structure, and a mix of natural and historic assets are all appealing features, but there’s still something more that sets us apart. The Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce, with a mission to foster economic vitality and enhance quality of life through supporting our members, providing educational opportunities, and engaging the community, has played a small role in making sure that once rooted here, businesses and individuals are able to grow and bloom, right where they are planted.

The fact that Gallatin is the nicest place, with grit and grace, is no longer a secret. We offer true connectivity and amazing community. §

In 2016, Gallatin began carrying the slogan “True Grit, Amazing Grace” and in 2017, picked up the title “Nicest Place in America” by Reader’s Digest. While a slogan has been helpful and the title has offered some serious bragging rights, there’s much deeper meaning behind having grit, grace, and being the nicest place. When understood, it reveals some of that secret sauce. Gallatin’s grit and grace is something that is often described, just not always by using those words. Repeatedly, we hear about the friendly people who help without being asked, who meet you truly where you are, and who embrace you as one of their own. They strike up a conversation with strangers and ooze with authenticity while they carry it on. They’re kind, easygoing, true to themselves, and exemplify gracious hospitality. The grit of Gallatin is found in the tenacity of small businesses, entrepreneurs, and large companies who work hard to call our stillsmall Tennessee town home. From the tradition of rivals playing under the Friday night lights in the crisp fall air, the age and beauty found in historic buildings, and the work ethic from the fields of farmers to the business leader magicians on our main streets, grit is showcased time and time again. Gallatin’s grit and grace aids in the unique quality of place and spirit that is alive and well in the 37066. We’re working intentionally and creatively to maintain our small-town feel, while growing in a strategic way that compliments our existing character. Along with historic 8

Hand crafted GALLATIN ARTISANS

T

o gauge the creative spirit of a community, look for the artisans. By that measure, Gallatin is a creative place indeed. Here’s a look at five thriving enterprises where the focus is on making things by hand.

Alberto's Restaurant

Alberto’s Restaurant If you appreciate homemade eats, make it a point to stop by Alberto’s Restaurant. Since this Douglas Bend Road establishment opened in a cozy converted farmhouse in 2017, locals have been beating a path to their door to sample delectable Brazilian and European dishes, along with desserts to die for. Just about everything is homemade, according to owner Fernanda Caron. “The fruit tarts, the mousse, the cakes, the pastas, the stroganoff, the sandwiches are all made from scratch,” she said. “I love to cook food made with the freshest ingredients I can find.” To create her signature dishes, Fernanda works with a variety of local and regional suppliers. Her artistry pays off in long lines and rave reviews. One bite of the fan favorite French Fruit Tart is all it will take to make you a believer.

Big Trouble Brewing Company Sometimes good ideas take a while to ferment. That’s the case for Big Trouble Brewing Company, a craft brewery just off the Gallatin square. If you’re into artisanal brews, you’re in for a treat. Find a constantly rotating selection of handcrafted beers on tap, including blood orange blondes, stouts, hard seltzers, and several India Pale Ales. For founder Josiah Trandahl, his new establishment represents the early realization of a long-held dream. “I had been thinking about starting a craft brewery for a long time,” he admitted. “A few years ago, when I was in the Marine Corps on deployment in Afghanistan, I lost some friends to a suicide bomber. It was then that I realized that life is short, and I needed to take the plunge now instead of waiting until I was 60. I’m glad I did.” 2022 CITY GUIDE & BUSINESS DIRECTORY

Buff City Soap

Buff City Soap Artisans making soap by hand seem to be everywhere these days, so when Buff City Soap opened on Nashville Pike back in March 2021, we had to investigate to see what made them different. We’re so glad we did! We got the full scoop from Marcie Mimbs, who serves as the store’s makery manager. “Every Buff City Soap product is 100 percent plant-based with nourishing ingredients and absolutely no harsh chemicals,” she said, adding that everything sold in the store is manufactured on site. “You can actually walk into the store and watch our makery associates handcraft every single product we sell. Each bath bomb, shower fizzie, bath truffle, soap loaf, and soap whip is made with love fresh each day. We create these soaps right in front of you. That’s what sets us apart.”

KB Popcorn Think popcorn is boring? KB Popcorn will change your mind. Launched in 2018 by Kaneisha and Brenda Dotson after completing the Startup Gallatin program, KB Popcorn is a gourmet popcorn company. Everything is made by hand with family-favorite recipes, and the flavors defy description. Whether you stop by KB’s stand at the Gallatin Farmers Market or swing by the old Corn Crib next to Filly’s on the city’s historic square, you’ll see people raving about these products. Why does KB Popcorn have so many fans? “We use the best ingredients that we can find and local ingredients as much as possible,” Kaneisha said, noting that the wild flavors come from layers of coating painstakingly applied. “We 10

lay our flavors one on top of the other to make one-ofa-kind creations. Some are sweet, others are savory, but they’re all fantastic.”

Once Upon a Willow Tree If you’re looking for honey, bees, or handcrafted bee-related goods, look no further than Once Upon a Willow Tree. In addition to running her growing business, owner and StartUp Gallatin alumna Morgan Curtis creates her handmade products using the output of bees in the more than 500 hives she looks after. “I harvest the honey by hand and use it to make different forms of honey, along with bee pollen and a wide range of beeswax candles,” she explained. “The process of dipping the candles is wonderfully meditative; I consider it a true labor of love.” If you want to find these beautifully crafted bee-related products, look for Once Upon a Willow Tree at one of four area farmers markets (including the Gallatin Farmers Market), Inside Out Markets, at other local stores, and online. §

SITES TO SEE

HISTORIC CASTALIAN SPRINGS

Telling Our Stories By Tonya Staggs, Executive Director, Historic Castalian Springs

A home once called the grandest house in the West… A former mineral springs resort… A middle-class home that produced a Grand Ole Opry star…

Hawthorn Hill Cragfont in the Snow (Image Credit: Christie Chandler)

You might think these sites are in distant locations, but you would be wrong! These historic treasures—Cragfont, Wynnewood, and Hawthorn Hill—are located just a few miles from each other in Castalian Springs, just a few miles outside the Gallatin city limits. These lovely locations tell our collective stories. Cragfont, the home of General James Winchester, is an imposing stone mansion built in 1802. Winchester fought in the American Revolution and later the War of 1812 against British tyranny, yet he enslaved around thirty people during his life.

Together, these three historic homes represent a complex, yet immersive look into our collective past. In many ways, who we are today as Tennesseans has its roots in the stories of Historic Castalian Springs. I invite you to explore these memorable sites for yourself. §

Wynnewood is a massive log building that is also a National Historic Landmark. This early resort was built in 1826 to accommodate travelers along the busy Holston Road. The resort was at Bledsoe’s Lick – later known as Castalian Springs – a site that has been occupied by humans for thousands of years. Alfred Wynne, the owner, participated in the slave trade between Middle Tennessee and Natchez, Mississippi. Just down the road is the quainter Hawthorn Hill, a twostory brick house built at the dawn of the nineteenth century. While this house may seem small by today’s standards, it’s a fantastic look at middle class life during that time. Humphrey Bate was born here in 1875. In 1925, Bate and his band, The Possum Hunters, became the first musicians to perform oldtime music on Nashville radio, and they went on to be regular performers at the Grand Old Opry.

hriving communities like Gallatin don’t happen by accident. They are built on a strong foundation that includes robust early childhood education. igging in the dirt is a great teaching tool, offering lessons in agriculture, math, science, and more. Find out how five Gallatin area schools use gardens as an opportunity for learning.

SCHOOL GARDENS Station Camp High School

Elite Education

26

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Station Camp High School: A Growing Business Station Camp’s horticulture program is extensive, with classes in agriculture science, greenhouse management, landscaping, and turfgrass management. One of the most impressive outputs from the school’s horticulture program is the annual sale of plants grown in the Station Camp greenhouse. Though the sale is billed as a fundraiser, educator Ally Choate views it as a business. “Students do everything,” said Ally, who teaches the school’s horticulture and agriculture mechanics courses. “They order supplies, start plants from seeds or cuttings, manage inventory, and handle customer service.” Half of the more than 100 flower baskets that grace Gallatin’s historic square also come from Station Camp High School greenhouses. Ally works closely with city officials to complete the project each year. After the baskets are dropped off in the late fall, students prepare them for the next year’s planting. “My kids get the satisfaction of seeing the end product hanging up in the square,” she added. “I love hearing them say, ‘I helped grow that!’”

Elite Education: Bunnies & Chickens versus The Garden Can a schoolyard garden teeming with vegetables coexist with a flock of chickens and a few rabbits? For Elite Education co-founder Krissi Carr, the answer is no. “I thought it would be cool for the kids to have animals and a garden,” said Krissi. In the spring of 2019, she purchased some rabbits, and then recruited Ally Choate, one of the agriculture teachers at Station Camp High School, to install the garden. “We had a bumper crop that first year, and the kids even got to take some of the vegetables home,” Krissi said. “We kept the rabbits in a bunny hutch, so they didn’t bother the plants.” The following year, Krissi added more rabbits, purchased a few chickens, and let everything roam free in the garden. “That’s when things started to go downhill,” she laughed. “The chickens and the bunnies ate everything before it even had a chance to grow. The animals were more popular than the garden, so that’s what we kept.” Today, Elite Education maintains three rabbits and five free-range chickens. From early spring through late fall, students observe the chickens’ entire lifecycle—from egg to chick to egg-laying hen. Will the Elite Education farmstead eventually include a garden? “We’re working on a plan to bring the garden back,” Krissi added. “We’ll find a way for everything to coexist.”

The Kindness Garden at Shafer Middle School What does it take to bring a school together? For Thomas Oglesby, principal at Shafer Middle School, the answer was found in an unlikely place: a rock garden. “When I got to Shafer three years ago, I wanted to build a culture where students enjoy coming to school each day,” he said. “I’m blessed with a great team that had plenty of ideas for making that happen.” One of those ideas, a Kindness Garden, was conceived by Angie Morrison, a sixth-grade English Language Arts teacher. In July 2020, Angie began working with Kate Kennedy, a former member of the Shafer faculty, to bring the garden to life. The idea was simple. The Kindness Garden would be a space carved out near the entrance of the school. Each student would receive a rock to decorate with a painted image or an inspirational slogan. They would then place those rocks in the Kindness Garden for other students to pick up.

School Gardens Thanks to a grant from the Gallatin Chamber Foundation plus donated time and labor, the project forged ahead. By spring 2021, after nearly a year of work, the garden was ready for the final implementation phase. “Everybody got to go outside and pick out the rock they wanted to decorate,” Angie explained. “Then, our related arts team helped the kids paint the rocks.” In addition to the brightly painted rocks, the Kindness Garden contains a bench for students to sit on and a small library made from a repurposed newspaper box. “The students love it,” Thomas added. “I watched a student pick up a rock the other day. He told me, ‘It has been a tough day and I really needed this rock.’ That’s how I know the garden is a success.”

Gallatin High School: Green(house) and Gold Students at Gallatin High School have no shortage of course options if they have an interest in growing things. The school boasts two greenhouses and offers classes in a variety of horticulture-related topics. “Anybody can get their hands in the soil or learn about the mechanics,” said Rebecca Morgan, one of the two agriculture teachers at Gallatin High School. In addition to preparing more than four dozen flower baskets each spring for use in and around Gallatin’s historic square every summer, Gallatin High School sponsors two greenhouse sales events each year. The spring sale has been a citywide staple for years; the fall sale, launched last year, sells rosemary, white sage, and hanging baskets of pansies in Gallatin High School's signature green and gold.

Flower baskets on the square produced by local Gallatin high schools

One of the most exciting new developments on the grounds of Gallatin High School involves the creation of a garden that will be part of a farm-to-classroom initiative. “We will be producing some of the items Chef West, the head of Gallatin High School's culinary program, needs to make dishes for our teachers,” Rebecca said. “I'm hoping to grow a lot of squash, zucchini, tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs. It will be a great experience for our students as they discover how awesome it is to grow things from seed.”

The Garden at Union STEAM Elementary The seeds for Union STEAM Elementary School Garden were sown in 2002 when the late David Collins, a long-time educator at Vena Stuart Elementary School, transferred to Union when the school transitioned to a year-round schedule. The principal at the time issued a challenge to David: start up a garden like the one David had created at Vena Stuart. According to Lance Taylor, now principal of Union STEAM Elementary, the garden started small, but soon took on a life of its own as David donated time and effort to add flowers, vegetables, fruits, herbs, and more. Thanks to grants and fundraisers, a greenhouse was added in 2012, and a chicken coop followed. 28

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Today, the vegetable garden includes corn, green beans, squash, zucchini, kale, cabbage, potatoes, red tomatoes, orange tomatoes, broccoli, and a small patch of herbs. The fruit garden includes strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. There’s even an on-campus butterfly garden. “Students get to watch the eggs turn into the caterpillar into the chrysalis and then into the butterfly itself,” Lance explained. “It’s fascinating to watch.” David was also the driving force behind the installation of a rain garden. Gardeners from the University of Tennessee Extension Agency and the City of Gallatin helped bring the small space to life. “It teaches kids about water erosion and bio retention,” Lance said. “We even have a family of frogs that have moved in.” §

The Garden at Union STEAM Elementary

REMEMBERING

DAVID COLLINS My first encounter with David Collins happened in 1975 at Vena Stuart Elementary School in Gallatin. His kindergarten classroom was across the hall from mine. I wasn't a teacher then; I was a five-year-old. Little did I know then what an impact he would have on my life. David taught kindergarten at Vena Stuart until 2002 when he was recruited to teach first grade at Union STEAM Elementary School. Our paths crossed again 42 years later in 2017 when I joined Union as the school’s principal. The first time I went outside and worked alongside him in the garden, he looked at me and said, "You've never done this before, have you?" He could see my inexperience, and he taught me. David believed that hands-on learning is better than learning from a book. It sounds like a cliché, but he really believed it. My son was in his classroom during David's 32nd year as a teacher, the point when many educators are ready to throw in the towel. Not David. He was on fire with passion for his

work. Parents would try to get their kids in David’s class each year because they knew that their kids would get handson experience in his garden. David spent 44 years as a teacher. We all learned from him. "Be still, just be still and you’re going to learn," he would say as faculty members joined students to watch butterflies move from the caterpillar to the chrysalis stage. In that stillness, we saw the miracle of nature unfold in ways we never would have noticed without him. It’s safe to say that I learned more about agriculture—and life—in the four years I worked with David than I learned my first 47. David was the driving force behind many gardens in Gallatin. The butterfly garden at Triple Creek Park was his creation. He maintained gardens at both Vena Stuart Elementary School locations, and at Union. He had a garden at home. I still find it hard to believe that he taught all day and then tended his gardens after hours. Sometimes I worked alongside him in the Union Garden. It was always

a humbling experience. Here he was, a 68-year-old outworking me, a man 20 years younger. He was sick at the time, though none of us knew it. He was already experiencing health problems that would eventually take his life. When people encouraged him to slow down, he said, “I don't want to be alive. I want to live.” That's always stuck with me. David Collins was a remarkable person. His legacy lives on in every plant, every harvest, and every butterfly in the garden at Union STEAM Elementary School.

hen you think about businesses whose work involves digging in the dirt and planting things, what comes to mind? Landscapers, lawn and garden retailers, and farmers are obvious answers, but you might be surprised to learn that schools and healthcare clinics are also on this list. Organizations with deep roots in Gallatin are working the ground to make a difference for those they serve.

Salvus Center How can we make it easier for our patients to access healthy food? It was a question that Jennifer Flanagan asked herself every day. As the President and CEO of Salvus Center, a faith-based primary healthcare clinic that serves the working uninsured,

Jennifer saw the impact of poor food choices, including diabetes and heart disease. “Eighty percent of our patients live in food deserts,” she explained. “Small gas station markets become their grocery store, which makes it hard to eat healthy.” Jennifer eventually found the answer to her question in an unexpected place: Salvus Center’s own back yard. “It occurred to me that we could grow healthy food for patients in a garden of our own,” she explained. “We had the land. We had the room. Why not?” It was a bold idea at exactly the right time. Graham Broome, a Boy Scout looking for

an Eagle Scout project, agreed to build the garden. Barb Tenshur, a Salvus Center nurse practitioner trained in nutrition and wellness, volunteered to oversee the project. In just a few months, the Salvus Center backyard was transformed from an empty expanse to a community garden complete with three raised beds filled with spring vegetables, tomatoes, and herbs. The garden at Salvus Center is a case study of what can happen when a community pulls together. Master Gardeners, HCA Volunteer Days, and the Boy Scouts have all worked to bring the garden to life. “We harvested more than 200 pounds of vegetables in a two-month period last summer,” shared Grace Tomkins, Salvus Center board member leading the gardening volunteers. During the summer and fall, Salvus Center patients come to the clinic for medical care and leave with containers overflowing with produce, along with recipes, cooking tips, and nutritional counseling. Salvus Center also hosts workshops on how to cook with fresh produce, and how to grow vegetables and herbs from seedlings. Salvus Center was created in 2005 after the CEOs of two local hospitals gathered with community leaders to create a health care option for the uninsured. “Our mission is very simple,” Jennifer added. “We follow the Biblical imperative to provide wholeness, wellness, and healing to those in need. It’s all about dignity, high quality of care, and access – the greatest barrier to health equity. The garden at Salvus Center is an important part of that.”

he mission of the Gallatin Economic Development Agency is to provide a diverse and resilient tax base for the City of Gallatin – a city that has not raised its property tax rate in 17 years – a city that is the 4th fastest growing in Tennessee.

Our economic success is grounded in a proactive approach to infrastructure and strategic planning. Gallatin owns all its utilities – gas, water, sewer and electric. We are home to two colleges but also have talent feeding from 28 colleges and post-secondary institutions in a 50-mile radius. Our county

school system has eight STEM schools, 13% of all STEM schools in the state. And, one of our magnet high schools consistently ranks among the 10 best in the country. Middle Tennessee is among the hottest markets in the U.S. with the state at #1 for advanced industry job growth. This helps put Gallatin in a position for consideration from a variety of businesses. We are laser-focused on advanced technology jobs and companies that will bring diversified employment opportunities that pay well. With an employment rate that

We are laser-focused on advanced technology jobs and companies that will bring diversified employment opportunities that pay well. Our planning and focus pays off. Gallatin landed a Facebook hyper scale data center in August, 2020. This is a nearly $1-billion capital investment that will make Facebook the largest revenue stream in the county. Gap Inc. has expanded its regional distribution center in Gallatin twice in the last few years growing to more than 3,200 jobs. Additionally, the city has other new, advanced manufacturing partners as well as expansions of existing industries. All of these factors combined put Gallatin on the international radar for new businesses, relocations and expansions. We offer true success and amazing opportunities. §

did you know? A Bit of History on First National Bank Citizens Bank may have a new name, but the things you love most about this 116-year-old financial institution— like local control and friendly faces— aren’t changing. On September 1, 2021, Citizens Bank was acquired by a bank with an even longer history: First National Bank out of Paragould, Arkansas, which has been around since 1889. With 21 branches in Arkansas, First National Bank was looking to expand into a major market in the southeast. Citizens Bank was the perfect fit. According to Todd Austin, Tennessee Market President, the merger is a win/win for the Gallatin and surrounding communities. “We will continue to give the same personable

customer service that people have come to expect from a community bank and we will have the same urgency and authority to approve loans that we’ve always had,” Todd explained. “The good news is that that we will be able to offer much more because First National Bank is better suited to deliver a wider range of products and services. There has never been a better time to stop in and see what’s new at First National Bank.”

G BEAUTIFUL

gardens OF GALLATIN

Sumner County Master Gardeners maintain more than two dozen gardens around the county. Here’s a closer look at three of the most interesting.

Glorious blooms are at treat for the eyes at the Gallatin Pollinator Garden, located just off the historic square on South Water St. 42

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Cragfont Master Gardeners Mary Roberts, shown here with Executive Director Tonya Staggs, maintain a bible of every flower and when it blooms.

The Gardens at Cragfont This historic property, once home to Revolutionary War protagonist General James Winchester, has always been known for its lovely grounds. Cragfont’s beauty is more than skin deep. The gardens as they exist today are based on historical sources dating from the end of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, including written descriptions found in old family memoirs. Archaeology of the garden completed in the 1980s has also been a factor in the restoration process. “It’s

very important because it’s some of the only archaeology that has ever been done here at Cragfont,” said Executive Director Tonya Staggs,“ and it adds an interesting historic aspect to our garden.” The garden’s appearance is also influenced by a hand-drawn map of what was believed to be the original layout supplied in the 1930s by a descendent of the original owners. “Though many of the garden’s plantings aren’t necessarily historical, the general layout of the garden and the pond next to it, the rock wall, and the weeping willows were all described by the early descendants of the Winchesters who had spent time at Cragfont,” Tonya explained.

The gardens are truly magnificent. One section contains more than thirty different kinds of wildflowers that bloom mostly in the spring. Another section, dubbed the “fragrance garden,” features plants like roses, larkspur, and sweetsmelling tuberoses. There’s also an herb garden, lovingly restored by the Sumner County Master Gardeners. The net effect is intoxicating. “When I walk in, I am blown away by the beauty of this place,” said Challis Prillaman, co-leader of the team of up to a dozen Master Gardeners who spend Thursday mornings tending the gardens. “In the spring, you have these enormous peonies, and then larkspur, which

Master Gardeners Wendy Scowden (left) and Tricia Kitchens (right), shown with Ryan Baker, Executive Director of the Sumner County Museum and Stonewall, are leading the effort to bring the gardens at Stonewall back to life.

The Gardens at Historic Stonewall What do you do when you have a historic property with once-beautiful gardens that have fallen into disrepair? Ryan Baker can answer that question. As the Executive Director of the Sumner County Museum and Stonewall, Ryan was charged with bringing Stonewall’s grounds back to life. When Ryan saw the state of the gardens in early 2021, he called the Sumner County Master Gardeners. If you’re not familiar with Stonewall, start at Gallatin’s historic square and then head east on East Main Street. Look for a large mansion on the left. Built in 1831, Stonewall has been a private residence for most of its history, except for a fouryear stint in the 1870s when it served as a boys’ dormitory for Neophogen College. John Garrott owned Stonewall for many years and eventually donated the property to the Sumner County Museum in 2015. Unlike historic properties such as Cragfont and Rosemont, no records detailing the design or layout of Stonewall’s garden have been found. “We really don't have much information about the house or the grounds,” Ryan said. Tricia Kitchens, a freshly minted Certified Master Gardener, agreed

44

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

to lead the restoration project. She assembled a team, including Wendy Scowden, another Master Gardener who serves as co-chair, and then drafted a plan to bring the property back to life. In mid-March, a phalanx of volunteers including Master Gardeners, Boy Scouts, and other community groups planted flowers donated by local businesses, relocated perennials, and cleared out overgrown areas. “We took out quite a few things and tried to replant them in different locations,” said Tricia. “We also worked to improve the gardens by adding potted plants and annuals, and planning for color throughout the year.” Tricia acknowledges that the Stonewall gardens are a work in progress. “We’re basically starting from scratch,” she admitted. “The gardens here aren’t as established as many of the others, and it will take a few years to get them in shape. I consider myself fortunate to have such good help. I've learned so much from the Master Gardeners on the team who have been doing this for a long time.”

The Garden at Volunteer State Community College If you’re ever on the Volunteer State Community College campus, find your way to the softball field, then head

down toward the creek. Look behind the tennis courts and you’ll spot the school’s garden, ringed by a split rail fence with an archway inviting you to enter. Just a third of an acre in size, this garden has been growing since 2006, when then-Dean Nancy Morris suggested converting a former parking lot into a community garden. According to Jeff Kent, the faculty member charged with overseeing the project, the garden has evolved over time. “Originally, all we had was wildflowers,” said Jeff, who retired in

Retired Volunteer State professor Jeff Kent and Master Gardener Joanne Brown examine the berry crop in the college’s demonstration garden.

For Joanne, working in the garden is a labor of love. “We have such a wonderful group,” she added. July 2021 after serving more than two decades as a professor of biology. “Eventually other people took it over, and we started to develop a vision for what it might look like.” Today, the plot is maintained by the Sumner County Master Gardeners. Joanne Brown leads the team of volunteers that appears each Monday morning during the spring, summer, and fall to work in the beds. “In 2009, we shifted to a new garden concept,” she explained. “It started out as a community garden, but we decided to create a demonstration garden instead. The goal of this garden is to educate the students and the public on the varieties of vegetables, herbs, perennials, and fruiting shrubs that thrive in Middle Tennessee’s unique climate.” The garden produces a variety of vegetables, flowers, and herbs, as well as juicy blackberries and raspberries. “At the end of each 25-foot row of berries, we have a bee house,” Joanne said. “We use the bee houses designed for the native bees, especially the leafcutter bees. They use the leaves from the blackberries and the raspberries and for laying their eggs in the beehouses.” In 2019, the garden at Volunteer State Community College and Master Gardener Joanne Brown were featured on the Volunteer Gardener YouTube channel. Wild LCragfont’s Tuberoses If the gardens at Cragfont had to be summed up in a single image, it would be the fragrant tuberoses that bloom every August. Though these bulbs produce ordinary looking greenery early in the growing season, don’t be fooled. By late summer, the plants send up threefoot-tall stalks with white flowers that emit an intoxicating scent. People come by the carload to see and smell these beauties.

Certified Master Gardeners are also eligible to join the Sumner County Master Gardeners Association. “We get together once a month and hear a speaker, enjoy a potluck, and have a business meeting,” said Chris Taylor, currently in his sixth year as the association’s president. Launched in 1992 with just five people, the association now has more than 100 members and sponsors a variety of programs, including a plant sale that raises money for projects. Sumner County Master Gardeners work on more than two dozen projects around the county, including the gardens at Cragfont, Stonewall, and Volunteer State Community College profiled in this edition of the Gallatin City Guide. More projects are in the works, including an educational pollinator garden at the Gallatin Farmers Market.

did you know? Morningside is Now Charter Senior Living This is a paid advertisement. The Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce does not endorse political candidates.

Gallatin’s longest-running assisted living facility may have a new name and a new management company, but the things people appreciate most about this beloved retirement community aren’t changing. “I've been at Morningside for sixteen years and I’m not going anywhere,” said Stephanie Harville, who heads Charter Senior Living of Gallatin’s local management team. “We still have the same administrators. We still have the same owners. We still have the same employees, many of whom have been with us since we opened in 1998, and we still have the same great culture.” Stephanie is excited about the transition to the new management company, which happened last fall. “They gave big pay raises to most staff members and announced a million-dollar facelift of the facility’s common areas,” she explained, noting that renovations should be complete by early spring. “I can say with a high degree of confidence that Charter understands what we’re trying to accomplish. We may not be Morningside anymore, but we're still bringing the Morningside magic. That’s what we're known for.”

Jake Wooten: Skateboarding Sensation From a little boy perfecting his moves in Thompson Park’s skate park to a fierce competitor winning international championships, Jake Wooten is at the pinnacle of his profession. How does a little boy from Gallatin make it to the top of the skateboarding world? Gallatin’s Jake Wooten can answer that question. Picking up his first skateboard when he was five, he was hooked after watching skateboarders perform at Tony Hawk's Boom Boom Huck Jam, an action sports event in Nashville. Encouraged by his Uncle Phil and Aunt Sharon, Jake started entering local and regional skateboarding contests, often

By age eight, Jake had landed his first sponsor, a small skate shop in the Nashville area that supplied him with free decks and gear. As Jake continued entering—and winning—regional contests, he eventually landed deals with sponsors like OJ Wheels, Independent Trucks, Red Bull, and Santa Cruz, successfully balancing his studies at Gallatin High School with his trips to competitions. In 2017, Jake struck skateboarder’s gold when he won the Vans Continental Championship in California, which qualified him for the Vans Park Series, a prestigious worldwide skateboarding competition. Since then, Jake has been traveling the world to compete in Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Estonia, Sweden, Spain, France, Italy, Korea, Australia, and China. “Being raised in Gallatin has given me things like manners, etiquette, and respect, things that you don’t always find everywhere else. I’m glad I have Gallatin roots.” Scan the QR code to watch Jake as a sixteen-year-old in Gallatin’s Thompson Park.

Tennys Sandgren: Tennis Ace This high-flying pro tennis player takes a love for his hometown wherever he goes. Named for his Swedish great-grandfather, Tennys Sandgren II grew up in a tennis-loving family. Following his older brother,

Davey, into the junior tournament circuit, Tennys played in his first tournament at the tender age of six and competed in his first national tournament at the age of twelve. Before long, Tennys was invited to compete in the International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit. When he was just sixteen, he won all the national championships that year. As a junior, Tennys compiled a singles win/loss record of 70–38 (and 53–35 in doubles), reaching as high as No. 9 in the combined ITF junior world rankings in April 2009. His status as the highestranked international junior at that time made Tennys the most sought-after college recruit in the United States. After finishing high school, Tennys joined the University of Tennessee as a January midseason addition to the Volunteers' 2010 tennis roster. He played two years of college tennis, finishing his career with a 60–12 singles record, the third-best career winning percentage in Tennessee history. In 2011, he launched his pro career. By 2013, his Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ranking remained inside the Top 300 for nearly the entire year, allowing him to play on the Challenger Tour for much of the season. In his final tournament of the year, Sandgren won his first final at Challenger level to crack the Top 200 for the first time. In 2017, Tennys qualified for his first tournament on the ATP World Tour. Less than 18 months later, he went from ranking 600 in the world to breaking into the Top 100. He entered the Top 50 in April 2018, and in January 2019, Tennys achieved his career high in the singles rankings at World No. 41.

Eric & Lindsey Heatherly: The Record Store Troubadours Eric Heatherly is not one to live in the past. But with his deep appreciation for all things retro, he is clearly inspired by it. A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Eric walked away from a full ride music scholarship to try his luck on the Nashville scene. For nearly a decade, he paid his dues, playing nightly for meager tips at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge on Broadway. Shania Twain was sufficiently impressed with his chops to hire him to play lead guitar for her first world tour and to appear with her on the 1997 Country Music Association awards show.

Lindsey & Eric Heatherly

Throughout his career, Tennys has played with many of the great names of the day, including Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Tennys qualified to represent the United States at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He lost in the first round in singles but reached the semifinals in doubles partnering Austin Krajicek where they lost to eventual champions Mate Pavi and Nikola Mekti. The pair lost subsequently in the bronze medal match to the New Zealand pair of Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus. Tennys savors his deep roots in Gallatin. While many pros travel from tournament to tournament, Tennys comes home to Gallatin every chance he can, training with friends on the tennis court where he first learned to play all those years ago. “I’ve been all over the world and still love coming back to Gallatin,” said Tennys.

62

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Eric’s years of dedicated effort were rewarded with major label deals with Mercury Records, Dreamworks, and Universal. His ride to music stardom started in 2000 when he stormed the country charts with a rockabilly-inflected revival of the Statler Brothers classic hit, “Flowers on the Wall,” which peaked at #6 on the US Country charts. More success followed, with “Swimming in Champagne,” “Wrong Five O’clock,” and “Last Man Committed.” His take on country with a surf-rock feel found its way to radio and TV, showing up on CMT, “Austin City Limits,” and “Grey's Anatomy.” In 2005, after becoming disillusioned with the over-produced, auto-tuned new Nashville sound, he took his band across the pond, charting nearly a dozen top-selling hits in nineteen European countries and landing in the #1 iTunes slot in Japan. In 2017, Eric met Lindsey, a southern born and bred musician who had won the Mt. Juliet Star singing competition and was coming off a top-five NPC national fitness award. She was the opening act for one of his performances in the Nashville area. “It was love at first sight,” Eric remembered. “A year to the day after that first meeting, we were married.” Since then, their creative journey as a duo has been remarkably productive. Performing as The Record Store Troubadours, Eric and Lindsey live the vintage lifestyle and are delighting audiences across the country with their retro look and sound, and their tight harmonies. In 2021, they inked a record deal with AGR Television Records in Germany and released their first single and video, Andale. They even have a reality show in the works.

Lindsey and Eric also moved into the business of selling the thousands of vintage items they’ve collected during their travels. In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, they opened a brick-and-mortar store called Every Era, located just a few minutes from their home in Gallatin’s historic district. Every Era has been a magnet for everyone from East Nashville hipsters to traditional antique pickers to offbeat oddity seekers. “We’re on their hit list of Nashville vintage stores,” Lindsey added, “and that’s a great place to be.”

“It was great being able to play in my hometown. You don't know how special Gallatin is until you leave.”

Kenneth Nixon: Framing Hanley This singer/songwriter helped turn a Sumner County garage band into a rock sensation. What’s it like for a garage band to ride the rocket all the way to the top? Kenneth Nixon knows. This Gallatin native was one of five Sumner County boys whose dream of rock-and-roll stardom came true. It all started when Nixon was a student at Volunteer State Community College. “It was 2005 and I was looking for a job,” he remembered. “On the bulletin board I saw that a local band was looking for a lead singer. It was like finding the opposite of a job. The time I could have spent making money was time I was spending playing music in someone’s garage.” Nixon wrote songs and sang lead. Guitarists Tim Huskinson (replaced by Ryan Belcher in 2009) and Brandon Wooten, bassist Luke McDuffee, and drummer Chris Vest rounded out the roster. The band’s hard driving sound caught on and it didn’t take long for them to gain a large following in Nashville. Their big break happened in 2006 after they posted demos of their songs on the band’s MySpace page. Those demos were discovered by Brett Hestla, the former Creed bassist who helped the band record a two-song demo in his Florida studio. The demo found its way to Jeff Hanson (Creed, Sevendust, Paramore) and his record label Silent Majority Group. The following day, Hanson went to see the band play in Nashville. “He wrote up our deal on a cocktail napkin and we both signed it,” Nixon laughed. “That was the beginning of our partnership.” After the band’s first single, "Hear Me Now," hit the charts, the quintet found themselves catapulted from garage band status to playing on some of the nation’s most famous stages. “We were a bunch of punk kids who went from never playing outside of

Framing Hanley (from left to right): Jonathan Stoye, Nic Brooks, Shad Teems, Kenneth Nixon.

Nashville to traveling the country opening for bigger bands and playing sold-out shows,” said Nixon. “Playing in front of those big crowds really helped us cut our teeth. We became the band we are today because of it.” Since then, the band has released several more successful albums and toured extensively in the U.S., Europe, and Australia. Framing Hanley went on hiatus from 2015 to 2018 so Nixon could spend more time with his family, but the music bug never stopped biting. In 2018, Nixon and Ryan re-formed Framing Hanley with Shad Teems, Jonathan Stoye, and Nic Brooks to work on a new album (Envy, released in 2020). They also performed at Gallatin’s inaugural Fire On The Water festival. “It was great being able to play in my hometown,” he added. “You don't know how special Gallatin is until you leave. I don't think I would be the person I am today if I didn't have roots in this place.”

Making It Big with Gallatin Roots

Lucy’s Love Blankets This 12-year-old is making the world a better place one blanket at a time. Lucy Blaylock isn’t your average seventh grader. In between studies and extracurricular activities at Shafer Middle School in Gallatin, Lucy has found a unique way to comfort kids in need. She launched Lucy’s Love Blankets, a nonprofit that makes blankets for kids who need extra love. It all started when Lucy was a second grader. “One of my best friends was having a birthday and I wanted to make something special instead of just buying a gift,” Lucy remembered. “I turned to my mom and asked, ‘Why don’t I sew her a blanket?’ Mom taught me how to sew, we made the blanket, and gave it to her.” That friend’s enthusiastic reaction sparked an idea for Lucy’s mother, Veronica Blaylock. “I asked Lucy if she wanted to do a giveaway on Instagram with one of the blankets,” Veronica said. “Sixteen nominations later, Lucy decided that she couldn’t choose just one winner, so she made a blanket for everyone.” The nominations kept coming, Lucy kept sewing, and people started noticing. In 2020, she was nominated for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, which honors students for outstanding service to others. Lucy was a fifth grader, just ten years old at the time. “The award was a total surprise,” Lucy remembered. “There was an assembly and the whole school was there. Mayor Paige Brown even made a proclamation.” Thanks to stories in national media outlets such as Good Morning America, Access Hollywood, World News Now, The Washington Post, Better Homes and Gardens, and Highlights for Kids, Lucy’s Love Blankets has achieved worldwide recognition. Through the end of 2021, Lucy has sent more than 900 blankets to people in

nineteen countries. Nominations pour in from Lucy’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. Using personal details that nominators provide, Lucy chooses a meaningful fabric, then constructs the blanket from cozy flannel in two coordinated prints. Lucy’s trademark, a heart-shaped felt crest, is sown on each blanket. As a finishing touch, Lucy wraps each finished blanket in a pretty ribbon, then tucks in a poem and a handwritten card. Donations from generous people around the world help offset the cost of shipping and materials. Lucy has been overwhelmed by the support from people in Gallatin and beyond. “Lucy’s best supporters are

Brown. We have committed to providing nearly 30 acres of improved pollinator habitat within the next two years at our data center site to support bees, butterflies and other insects that are critical to food crops.

I'm often asked why Facebook picked Gallatin as the home for a state-of-the-art data center and I always find it helps to first talk about what a data center is. At Facebook, our data centers are the backbone of our platform. They power our apps and services, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, making it possible to connect billions of people worldwide.

When we're operational, we'll be able to host school tours to showcase this important natural habitat. This is just the beginning, and we look forward to getting involved to support nonprofits, schools, local businesses, and other projects in the community. Thank you, Gallatin, for welcoming us. We're proud to be your neighbor! §

We have 17 data centers around the world. Thirteen of them, including our home here in Gallatin, are in the United States, and all of them are supported 100% by renewable energy. Why did we choose to build here? Even in a competitive environment, Gallatin stood out to us for a number of reasons, including good infrastructure, a strong pool of talent for both construction and ongoing operations, and access to renewable energy.

Supporting Our Communities At Facebook, we strongly believe in investing in the long-term vitality of the communities where we live and work. Here in Gallatin and Sumner County, we're lucky to have had the opportunity to amplify the great work being done by community nonprofits and schools. We've provided grants to improve students' access to the Internet and to fund advanced robotics competitions that fuel their interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education). We've also supported the Educate a Woman program that raises money for scholarships for women to attend Volunteer State Community College. One unique program we're especially excited about is the Pollinator Habitat program with Mayor Paige 6666

ow do you assess the giving spirit of any community? Start by looking at the number of active Nonprofit Organizations. Fortunately, the Gallatin area is blessed with dozens of nonprofits; more than thirty are members of the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce. In this issue of the Gallatin City Guide, we shine the spotlight on four nonprofits that help their constituents build a strong foundation for life.

Habitat for Humanity In March 2021, after building 65 homes since it was chartered in 1993, Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County broke ground on Pafford Place, the first-ever Habitat neighborhood to be built in Sumner County. Named after long-time volunteers, Gordon and Robbie Pafford, this neighborhood will include nine new homes for deserving families who will work alongside volunteers to bring their dream of homeownership to life. As a Christian nonprofit housing agency, Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County serves low-income families and individuals by building affordable and energy-efficient homes for first-time homeowners. The organization also completes home repairs for people over 60, veterans, and people with disabilities. “Affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities,” said Kate Ritchie, the organization’s executive director. “Our mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, community and hope, right here in Sumner County.”

Cumberland Crisis Pregnancy Center Valuing all human life, the Cumberland Crisis Pregnancy Center (CCPC) ministers hope to those experiencing unplanned pregnancy, healing to those who have experienced abortion, and upholds truth to the community through sexual risk avoidance education. All services are free of charge, and all in need are welcome. CCPC provides compassionate and confidential counseling services to women and families involved in unplanned pregnancies, prenatal and parenting classes, mentoring, referrals, material assistance for baby and mom, and abortion recovery counseling. In 2020, CCPC served 1,121 clients through 3,613 visits. The Cumberland Crisis Pregnancy Center seeks to be a place of hope for those who feel hopeless, a place of safety for those who feel vulnerable, and a place where all can experience the unconditional love and life-transforming power of Christ.

MOONLIGHTING Ashley Cline Cook

Josh King

Megan Lange

Realtor by Day, Earth Mother by Night

Local Real Estate Consultant by Day, Chicken Farmer by Night

Library Employee by Day, Gardener by Night

As the co-owner of Selling Sumner + Land real estate agency, Ashley Cline Cook helps her clients purchase and launch small farms and homesteads. This is no accident. Country living comes naturally to Ashley, who grew up in a rural subdivision just outside Gallatin. Today, Ashley has created her own agrarian paradise on an eight-acre plot she calls Rockbridge Farm located not far from the Gallatin city limits.

During the day, Josh King has an important job. As a local real estate consultant, Josh The Planner, develops long-range plans for his clients. It can be a stressful job, but Josh has found a diversion. He raises chickens.

As the Sumner County Library System's Outreach Coordinator, Megan Lange gets out—a lot! When she’s not on the job, at a board meeting, or at a community event, you’re likely to find her in her backyard garden. Known as the Secret Garden at Lavender Cottage, this garden is on the property of her 1940s home on the edge of Gallatin’s downtown. Megan has transformed a scant quarter acre into a plant lover’s paradise, with 23 raised beds, almost 30 feet of grapevines, two apple trees, two mulberry bushes, two blueberry bushes, a fig tree, a chicken coop with four hens, and a greenhouse constructed from recycled materials.

On top of her busy career, Ashley runs what amounts to a full-scale farm, raising horses, bees, Great Pyrenees puppies, Nigerian dwarf goats, and chickens while managing a busy family. Many of her activities generate revenue. She sells the eggs her chickens lay, and she sells the hens that lay those eggs. “I breed chickens in the spring and then sell the baby chicks to friends and family,” she said. “I read an article in a magazine from the 1940s that said to get two hens for each person in your household so that you've got something to eat when times are hard. A chicken will lay an egg every day, with or without a rooster. Most people don't know that.” Ashley has high hopes for her herd of Nigerian dwarf goats, which are smaller than regular goats and known for their voracious appetites. “They grow to the size of a small dog, and they eat absolutely everything, including brambles and thorns,” she explained. “These dairy goats are in demand by people who want to make cheese and soap from their milk. My nine does and one buck can produce as many as 18 kids during a breeding season. Needless to say, there’s always a lot going on here. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” 70

Some people put in a full day’s work, then go home and relax. These three residents of the Gallatin area go home to a second shift of the agrarian kind.

“While I was on vacation in the Caribbean a few years ago, these chickens kept coming out from the jungle and pecking around,” he remembered. “When they kept coming over to me, I thought it might be fun to raise chickens. That's how my very expensive hobby began.” After returning from his trip, Josh headed over to the local farm store and bought four brown chickens along with all the accoutrements. Then, COVID happened, and he decided to get even more chickens. Drawing inspiration from Pinterest boards by other enthusiasts, he built a larger enclosure with a bigger coop and plenty of toys. “I didn’t want them to get bored,” Josh laughed. “We even installed a xylophone that they can play. They’re a lot of fun to watch. If I’ve had a rough day, I'll go out in the yard and hang out with them for a while. They’re like pets.” Raising chickens has unexpected parallels to the work Josh does for the communities in which he serves. “Creating a place where these birds can thrive brings to mind how our natural environment interacts with our built environment,” Josh added. “It’s a daily reminder of how important it is to balance the two, whether you’re managing the growth of a booming city like Gallatin or creating a backyard home for a flock of chickens.”

The Secret Garden at Lavender Cottage is Megan’s happy place. “My Mom was a gardener, so I thought it would be fun to grow things, but my real passion for gardening started when the pandemic hit,” she said. “I needed something to boost my spirits, so I started ordering seeds.” Throughout the summer, Megan blesses her friends with gifts of vegetables and flowers gathered from the Secret Garden. Then, at the end of the growing season, the canning process begins. “We make tomato sauces and pickles,” she said. “I have old-growth Muscadine grapevines on my property, so I make Muscadine jam and produce about a dozen bottles of Muscadine wine every year.” For Megan, gardening is a hopeful metaphor for life. “Watching a seed grow out of the dirt reminds me that good things can emerge from cold, hard, and dark places,” she added. “Digging in the dirt always brings me back to center.” §

FIRST HORIZON?

The official name change happened back in 2019 after First Tennessee expanded into the Southeast. “We couldn't exactly be First Tennessee in other states, so we decided to change our name to that of our parent company, which has always been First Horizon,” said Daisy Casey, First Horizon’s Market President for Sumner County. “We have always been a relationship-driven bank, and have strong roots in Gallatin because we have been serving Sumner County since 1905. The largest Tennessee-based bank in the state, First Horizon has 380 branch locations throughout the Southeast. “We are proud of the fact that we are the largest deposit holder in Sumner County,” Daisy added. “Whether we’re working with individual clients or businesses, First Horizon is relationship-driven, so we try to meet our customers exactly where they are, and then partner with them to help them achieve their financial goals. Our employees are proud of the relationships that they've built within the community. We love being part of Gallatin!”
