THE HONORS PROGRAM


The Summit of Undergraduate Education.

The Honors Program provides you with the unique opportunity to develop your skills and prepare to excel after graduation. In addition to advanced coursework, you will complete a capstone that showcases an original contribution as expected in graduate study or a profession. Once you’ve completed the capstone, you may submit your work for professional publication or develop your project further after graduation. Capstones range from natural science empirical research, a social science survey, and a business plan, to policy analysis or theoretical examination, a qualitative oral history, international service learning, creative writing and a new app. Your capstone becomes a powerful part of any portfolio for graduate study Gallaudet’s Honors or your first professional position. Program develops wellrounded leaders in and out of the classroom. Combine your passion for learning with rigorous preparation, and you’ll be ready for a top-tier graduate program or successful career.


Aim High—Aim Honors. Candidates for the Honors Program thirst for learning and success, academically and professionally. The program is ideal for students who want to maximize their competitiveness for toptier graduate programs and successful employment. Alumni from the Honors Program have gone on to graduate study at some of the country’s top educational institutions, including Columbia University, Georgetown University, The George Washington University, University of California at San Diego, Pacific School of Religion and the University of Rochester.

Tomorrow’s Leaders Today As an Honors Program participant, you will follow in the footsteps of some of Gallaudet’s most respected leaders. On campus, Honors participants represent a diverse group of student leaders who succeed in a range of extracurricular activities such as editor-in-chief of the Buff and Blue, Student Body Government president and student-athletes. Honors leadership doesn’t end with graduation. Honors students have the skills to enter and advance within their chosen professions.

Receive a rigorous academic challenge that is unparalleled in the university’s undergraduate courses. Practice professional standards for communication, integrity, responsibility, independence and timeliness, among others.

Connect with like-minded peers. These relationships will give you opportunities to succeed academically and socially, both at Gallaudet and later in graduate school and professional life.

Preparation

Recognition

Students who graduate with University Honors receive special recognition during commencement. You’ll have a designation on your diploma and in the commencement booklet. You will also receive a royal blue gown at graduation, participate in a special Honors commencement event with your family, and receive a plaque recognizing your academic achievement.

Scholarships

To emphasize how much we value high-achieving students like you, Gallaudet awards one of our top two merit scholarships to eligible students accepted into the Honors Program.

First- and second-year Honors courses prepare you for success in upper-level major courses. Upper-level Honors courses prepare you for graduate school and professional pursuits.

Shuxu developed a social media platform, an iOS mobile app, a server and a database for the VL2 Storybook Apps. This allows VL2, one of Gallaudet’s research laboratories, to share signed and written English stories to a worldwide audience.

Corinna’s capstone project examine how the government and media played roles in shaping the experience of veterans who became deaf. Complicating the situation, limited medical tests made deafness difficult to prove.

Zachary conducted a survey in Japan and the U.S. about auditory technology and surgical intervention for hearing loss. Results showed significant differences in knowledge and willingness to accept surgery, but no significant differences in societal attitudes.

Paige wrote a collection of three philosophical stories, tied together by Christian theology. They concern the nature of being in three ways: God’s responsibility for evil, personal identity and the nature of knowledge.


Join the Honors Program Candidates for the Honors Program must first be admitted to Gallaudet University. Once you receive your letter of admission, contact the Honors coordinator at honors@gallaudet.edu to schedule an interview to be considered for admission to Honors.

For Those Accepted to the Honors Program Over the summer, you and other new Honors students will read books selected by Honors faculty. New Honors students and some upperclass Honors students will discuss these readings at an Honors Retreat that occurs prior to New Student Orientation in August, as well as during the semester. This annual Honors Retreat involves Honors students, faculty and staff in discussions and team-building exercises. The retreat is a formative experience for incoming Honors students, and is critical to the continuing development of the Honors community.

Scholarships Students who are accepted into the Honors Program may be eligible for one of our top two merit scholarships: • President’s Distinguished Honors Scholarship • President’s Honors Scholarship For optimal consideration for one of these top two merit scholarships, you are encouraged to complete the Gallaudet University undergraduate application and submit all required materials by February 15.
