The Place to Be. If you already know American Sign Language and would like to study with deaf and hard of hearing individuals, Gallaudet University is for you. No other university offers full immersion in a bilingual ASL and English environment, along with internship and research opportunities that span the globe. You will study with internationally known professors who are excellent teachers and mentors, and you will rapidly expand your knowledge of ASL and Deaf Culture. With our location in Washington, D.C., you will have unparalleled access to the educational, cultural and recreational resources of a world capital. Every year, we accept a select group of hearing students to our bachelor’s degree programs. You may apply to the general Hearing Undergraduate program or for the Bachelor of Arts in Interpretation program.

Enter Any Major as a Hearing Undergraduate Student Each year we accept a select group of hearing first year and transfer students to our Hearing Undergraduate (HUG) program. Choose from chemistry, education, information technology, international studies, theatre arts and more than 25 other bachelor’s degree options. In all majors you will gain a broad educational foundation as well as specialized knowledge and practical experience.

The Bachelor of Arts in Interpretation Program Our renowned interpretation program draws hearing and deaf students from around the globe. Comprehensive coursework and fieldwork will provide you with the knowledge and skills in ASL interpreting to achieve success in this high-demand career. The program includes hands-on training in a variety of settings, as well as supporting courses in ASL, deaf studies, biology and linguistics.

The Admissions Process for Hearing Students We require an admissions interview and language screening, either in person or via video, to assess your level of ASL fluency. We want to ensure that you will succeed in the classroom and be able to participate in the campus community. Many students enroll here after taking several ASL classes; others have grown up signing with deaf family members. With the right foundation, your knowledge will build quickly and you will thrive at Gallaudet.

Apply Online For all students, there is one undergraduate admissions application, available at admissions.gallaudet.edu. Once you are accepted to Gallaudet, you select a major field of study. If you choose the Bachelor of Arts in Interpretation (BAI), you must complete a Department of Interpretation screening.

Full Immersion If you are a hearing student who already knows American Sign Language, full immersion is beneficial in increasing one’s awareness and knowledge of ASL, Deaf Culture, and the signing community. With students, faculty and staff using ASL and English, every class, every club and every conversation can be visual.

Choose from 30+ Undergraduate Majors Our Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree options include nationally accredited programs in accounting, business, information technology and social work, as well as pre-law and pre-medicine programs.
