THE ACADEMIC ADVANTAGE Pre-Law

Pre-MBA

Students who are considering law school benefit from specialized advising, LSAT preparation, pre-law writing competitions and a mock trial program.

Our nationally accredited business and accounting programs offer specialized advising, GMAT preparation and internships to prepare students to start their business careers or enter graduate school.

Pre-Medicine We prepare students for medical school, pharmacy school and other health-related careers through specialized advising, MCAT preparation, and internships and research with faculty mentors.

“I wanted an academic experience that would lead me to a career that was dynamic, challenging and stimulating. Gallaudet’s pre-law program exceeds all these expectations. I’ve learned how to look at situations from numerous perspectives, gained a significant understanding of law, expanded my logical reasoning and critical thinking skills, and acquired a newfound appreciation for politics.” Mary Harman Edmond, Oklahoma Current Student, Government and Business Administration Major Student Body Government President

“I started considering medicine as a profession during my first and second years at Gallaudet. The Medical College Admission Test required me to have a broad base of scientific knowledge, which I received at Gallaudet.” Colin Hill, ’12 B.S., Chemistry Medical Student, University of Virginia Medical School

It’s estimated that more than 400,000 jobs will become available as professionals in the risk management and insurance fields retire. Gallaudet recently established the Maguire Academy of Risk Management and Insurance to develop an undergraduate concentration in this field and ensure that every student in the program has opportunities for internships and career placement.

8

We are also creating an entrepreneurship concentration inspired by the ABC reality series “Shark Tank.”

Preparing you for jobs and careers

Programs for Hearing Students Nowhere else but Gallaudet will you find a full immersion, bilingual ASL and English college experience. Every year, we accept a select group of hearing first-year and transfer students to our bachelor’s degree programs. You may enter any major through the Hearing Undergraduate (HUG) program or complete additional requirements to apply specifically to the Bachelor of Arts in Interpretation (BAI) program.

Interpretation Major We offer the world’s only B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. programs in Interpretation in an American Sign Language-immersive environment. “I am working to become a nationally certified American Sign Language interpreter, and Gallaudet is without question the best place. It is the most prestigious school as well as the mecca for equal access in the deaf community globally. The BAI program is highly interactive and challenging, and is preparing me extremely well.” Nguyet (Lola) Phan Washington, D.C. Current Student, Interpretation Major

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

Research With International Impact Dr. Christian Vogler is developing open source mobile and desktop applications that will allow text, voice and high quality video calling. Students are working with Dr. Dirksen Bauman to develop a leading-edge online American Sign Language resource. Dr. Laura-Ann Petitto is conducting groundbreaking research in bilingual learning and educational neuroscience. They and other faculty bring exceptional undergraduate research opportunities to Gallaudet. Use leading-edge technology often reserved for graduate students at other universities. Earn a scholarship supported by the National Science Foundation or other major grantors. Collaborate in research that will make a difference in your career and in the world.

Looking Into the Human Brain What is the impact of learning two languages on the developing brain? What are the optimal programs for teaching a young bilingual child to read? Discoveries in our Brain and Language Laboratory for Neuroimaging (BL2) are answering these and other questions. The team uses one of the world’s most advanced brain imaging systems, functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), as well as state-of-the-art child observation studios. Undergraduate student interns can become certified in operating fNIRS—and help advance knowledge that will improve deaf education around the world. Lab director Dr. Laura-Ann Petitto, an internationally renowned cognitive neuroscientist, has lectured throughout the world and been interviewed by national and international media on her research and discoveries about language learning in the human brain.

At Gallaudet, we believe there should be more deaf and hard of hearing professionals in science, technology and mathematics. That’s why we offer undergraduate scholarships, internships and research opportunities in molecular genetics, bioinformatics, nanotechnology and ecology.

DISCOVER THE ADVANTAGES OF A BILINGUAL ENVIRONMENT Research shows that a bilingual approach enhances learning as compared to learning only one language. The Bilingual Advantage Everything is fully accessible. •

Extensive student-faculty collaboration, with direct communication in both American Sign Language and English

Full access to campus activities, clubs and athletics

Classroom technology to optimize learning for all

English Language Institute for international students whose first written language is not English

Communication access support provided for new signers, including a summer immersion program, interpreters and real-time captioning

Picture this: You walk into the student center and know that you can sit with anyone, even complete strangers, and start up a conversation. You can easily join a study group or a sports team, get advice from any professor or staff member and keep up with everything that’s happening on campus. With a bilingual American Sign Language and English environment, you will have direct access to everything and everyone at Gallaudet—including our extensive national and international connections for research, internships and careers.

What can a barrier-free environment mean to you? See gallaudet.edu

Support for New Signers To ensure an accessible environment for students who are emerging signers, Gallaudet provides services so that you won’t miss a thing. •

JumpStart ASL is a summer immersion experience that includes a crash course in ASL and the opportunity to get to know the campus ahead of time.

Gallaudet Interpreting Service conducts American Sign Language and English interpretation in the classroom and at campus events. Last year, GIS provided thousands of hours of interpreting service on campus.

Real-time captioning services are offered as needed in the classroom and at campus events.

“While I do have a cochlear implant, I am still deaf. Access to language is the key. It doesn’t have to be an ‘either-or’ decision. I attended JumpStart ASL the summer before my first semester. Learning an entirely new language is a challenge, but I knew I could get there. I made new friends and they became my support system. Meeting friends over lunch and in class made my ASL skills improve quickly. During my first semester there were interpreters and real-time captioning available. My academic performance improved along with my ASL fluency. It was great having ongoing support from the JumpStart ASL staff.” Alyssa Gleason Bennett, ’15 Springfield, Virginia B.A., Deaf Studies Gallaudet University, Master’s Program in Sign Language Education

“Classes here are unlike any I’ve ever experienced. I grew up oral and sign language was foreign to me. Here at Gallaudet, ASL is our pride and joy and it’s everywhere—especially in the classrooms. This is a visual university, so it is essential that everyone is able to see one another. The professors encourage active learning—making lectures more engaging and pushing students to become leaders inside and outside the classroom.” Taja Brown Lexington, Kentucky Current Student, Business Administration and Psychology Major

If you are deaf or hard of hearing and don’t know American Sign Language, you will learn with faculty, staff and peer support. Ask about JumpStart, our five-week summer immersion program that helps first-year students learn basic ASL skills and become comfortable on campus. You will be amazed at how much more you can learn and do in two languages!

Our different perspectives make us stronger. Join students from across the United States and more than 25 countries. As a world leader in education, research and advocacy for people who are deaf and hard of hearing, Gallaudet gathers a global community. Many different signed and spoken languages are represented on campus.

Diverse in Many Ways More than 40 percent of our undergraduate students and nearly 25 percent of our faculty identify themselves as part of a traditionally underrepresented group in higher education. Simply put, all students are welcomed and supported in our campus community.

For Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hearing Students We offer support for new signers, students with and without cochlear implants, and international students who are learning English. Our undergraduate students come from many academic backgrounds, including mainstream programs and schools for deaf and hard of hearing students.

Each spring, UnityFest highlights the different cultures on campus, and the community celebrates LGBTQA graduates with a Lavender Graduation.

Living on campus — everything is here for you. First- and second-year students at Gallaudet all live on campus, and many juniors and seniors choose to live on campus as well. First-year students live in Benson Hall, where it’s easy to make friends and connect with peer mentors and other support staff. We will make sure you feel right at home at Gallaudet through get-to-know-you activities and Freshman Foundation courses. After that, you could select a bright, open residence hall built entirely using DeafSpace architectural design elements. Or you could choose to live on “Faculty Row,” three U.S. National Historic Register homes with full kitchens and faculty-in-residence.

What is DeafSpace? DeafSpace elements foster community and visual interaction through lighting, visual sight lines and wide pathways to make signing easy. Gallaudet students were instrumental in deciding how our new, $16 million Living and Learning Residence Hall should be designed. All public spaces in our other residence halls were also recently renovated based on this input.
