DISCOVER THE ADVANTAGES OF A BILINGUAL ENVIRONMENT Research shows that a bilingual approach enhances learning as compared to learning only one language. The Bilingual Advantage Everything is fully accessible. •

Full access to campus activities, clubs and athletics

Classroom technology to optimize learning for all

English Language Institute for international students whose first written language is not English

Communication access support provided for new signers, including a summer immersion program, interpreters and real-time captioning

You can easily join a study group or a sports team, get advice from any professor or staff member and keep up with everything that’s happening on campus. With a bilingual American Sign Language and English environment, you will have direct access to everything and everyone at Gallaudet—including our extensive national and international connections for research, internships and careers.

What can a barrier-free environment mean to you? See gallaudet.edu

“While I do have a cochlear implant, I am still deaf. Access to language is the key. It doesn’t have to be an ‘either-or’ decision. I attended JumpStart ASL the summer before my first semester. Learning an entirely new language is a challenge, but I knew I could get there. I made new friends and they became my support system. Meeting friends over lunch and in class made my ASL skills improve quickly. During my first semester there were interpreters and real-time captioning available. My academic performance improved along with my ASL fluency. It was great having ongoing support from the JumpStart ASL staff.” Alyssa Gleason Bennett, ’15 Colorado Springs, Colorado B.A., Deaf Studies Gallaudet University, Master’s Program in Sign Language Education

“Classes here are unlike any I’ve ever experienced. I grew up oral and sign language was foreign to me. Here at Gallaudet, ASL is our pride and joy and it’s everywhere—especially in the classrooms. This is a visual university, so it is essential that everyone is able to see one another. The professors encourage active learning—making lectures more engaging and pushing students to become leaders inside and outside the classroom.” Taja Brown Lexington, Kentucky Current Student, Business Administration and Psychology Major

“There is a sense of belonging and self-improvement that I experienced here that was not solely in the classroom, but in every other aspect of my life. At Gallaudet, I was surrounded with positive influences such as teachers, coaches and fellow students, each of whom I continuously learned from. They gave me the tools I need to succeed. We have world-class coaches and former professional athletes working here at Gallaudet. Everyone is so down-to-earth and helpful and encouraging to one another.” Adham Talaat, ’14 Springfield, Virginia B.S., Physical Education Assistant Football Coach, Gallaudet University

“My internship as an educational advocate at the National Association of the Deaf allowed me to do research, think about what I wanted to do career-wise, gain experience in real settings and be part of something important. At Gallaudet, I was able to become more involved in class discussions and show my leadership skills. I discovered potential in myself that I didn’t know I had.” Kylei Brooks, ’15 Olathe, Kansas Internship: National Association of the Deaf B.A., Psychology
