Director’s note
Art in Life, Life in Art Korean Contemporary Art Exhibition Art On Gallery, an art consultancy that specializes in Korean contemporary art with ‘art in life, life in art’ as mission statement, is proud to present our first exhibition that brings together nine renowned artists from various fields of Korean art scene. The exhibition, also under the title of ‘Art in Life, Life in Art’, aims to apply an artistic angle to the things in our ordinary space, being true to our philosophy of bringing serendipity to everyday space. Showing an artwork is easy. Captivating the viewer is not. The exhibition aims to provide a differentiated experience to viewers by demonstrating how artwork can shine in different ways in harmony with the space that surrounds it rather than force one-way appreciation of artwork in isolation. To do that, an expert from Kemistry of Style, an Italy based interior design firm, has designed various virtual spaces using 3D rendering graphic design technique. Through close collaboration between the two firms, we will present artworks that suit various virtual spaces ensuring that each artwork breathes with the shape, structure and sensibility that flows in the space. The exhibition is about bringing serendipity to crude daily life by closing the gap between the everyday reality and the idealistic art, bridging the public who feel contemporary art is too difficult and artists who dream of a dialogue with the public, and moving from art of mere existence to art of living nature. Nine Korean artists participating in the exhibition are renowned both in and outside Korea, distinguished by their distinct philosophy in work while having demonstrated both artistic and commercial success. We showcase various genre of fine arts ranging from painting, sculpture, oriental painting to photography and printmaking, all characterizing uniqueness of contemporary Korean art. Shin Sang Ho, an artist of clay, earned his fame through series of fired paintings and led the contemporary Korean ceramic art to the attention of the world with works that combine ceramic art and painting for the past 30 years. These fired paintings can be used for exterior material for buildings and a museum in Korea named ClayArch (Clay+Architecture) has shown potential of ceramic architecture by using Shin’s fired ceramic paintings to cover the whole museum. Shin first gained traction of overseas collectors with ‘Dream of Africa’ series, which was motivated by African art that fascinated him while he was a visiting
professor at Imperial College in London. ‘Dream of Africa’ led him to be the invited artist in world Long House Reserve in Hampton in New York. Elegant deep colors that you see in his fired paintings and his ‘Minhwa Horse’ with motive from Korea’s traditional folk drawings can only be obtained through multiple firing at a high temperature and not seen in any other forms of painting. Choi Young Wook draws ‘moon pottery’, one of the representative objects of Korean beauty, and many collectors around the world have recently fallen in love with his ‘moon pottery’ paintings. Bill Gates Foundation, L’Oreal, Philadelphia Museum and King of Spain are a sample of collectors that recently acquired Choi’s work. Modern and stylish shape and colors of his moon potteries, naturalness seen in detailed cracks - all of which he drew by hand are some of the reasons why his works are beloved by even Westerners who are not accustomed to moon pottery. Hwang Sun Tae gained international recognition first during his graduate study at Burg Giebichenstein Art School in Germany through Opelvillen Glass Art Award, Lowenhof Art Forum Grand Prize, and Merseburg Kunstpreis Grand Prize in 2005. After winning Grand Prize in Shinsegae Art Fair in 2008, the year he came back to Korea, his works on glass continue to attract attention of collectors both domestically and internationally. He has been invited for solo exhibition in Switzerland at the end of this year. Shin Dong Won is famous for her twist angled still life artwork that combines ceramic, sculpture, and painting. Shin is very active in and outside of Korea having been invited to European Ceramic Work Center in Nederlands in 2007, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in the US in 2009, and The Clay Studio in Philadelphia in 2010. Shin’s works had been booked by Christi during Christi’s visit to Korea in 2006 and is widely recognized for her talent and potential. Koo Seung Yeon is renowned for her still life photography reorganizing her imagination with objects in our ordinary life. Her ‘Peony’ reborn as sweet candies of different shapes and colors will attract audience’s attention. Her photography is beloved by many through various art fairs and art galleries in and out of Korea. Kim Hyun Ju is well known for her flower images of crumbled newspapers using multiple overlapping printmaking technique. In fact her resume is peppered with splendid awards such as Grand Prize in Korea Modern Printmaking Award, Grand Prize from Bharat Bhavan International Biennale of Print Art and more from various countries such as Japan, India, and Thailand. Her artworks are in collection of more than 20 companies and museums including Hyundai Motor, Kunkuk University Hospital, Standard Chartered Bank, Seoul City Art Museum, and Modern Art Museum. Hwang Hyun Seung is a young artist whose first solo exhibition was in Singapore. His works have been gaining attention through various renowned international art fairs. The work that put him in the map of international art scene was hyperrealism ‘Sweet’ series, drawings of candies of strong crude colors that stimulate your sight and palate. Hwang’s attention grabbing works are being continued to more mature ‘Still Life’ series of still life paintings. Sung Young Rok attracts viewers with his oriental paintings of plum blossoms. His work elegantly recreates plum blossoms using gold and silver powders and waves of water using oriental ink on layers of Korean traditional paper. When he was just over thirty years of age, Sung was invited by Italian luxury brand ETRO in Korea for an invitation exhibition. Since then he has been reinforcing his reputation through 5 invitation exhibitions and participation in various art fairs. Lee Young Ji is a young promising artist who has been gaining traction of collectors through her labor-intensive drawing of trees. Her paintings of trees, full of artisan spirit drawn one brushstroke by another, have been recently introduced through Asia Top Gallery Hotel Art Fair and multiple art fairs in Korea. Viewers may feel the comfort of oriental paradise in her paintings, full of trees, birds, and everyday things. This is probably the attractiveness of her paintings that enabled her to grab collectors’ attention. Current cultural art scene in Singapore is vibrant as never before and is developing rapidly. We are thrilled to contribute to this vibrancy by introducing highly competent Korean artists to Singapore and sharing artistic asset and experience that contemporary Korean art has to offer. The exhibition hopes to provide a new artistic vision to the promising art scene of Singapore by providing a forum where cultures of two countries mix, learn, and dream via art.
