ike James Brown said - ’It’s a man’s world’. Heads of state, politicians, inventors, explorers... the seven dwarfs. Everywhere we look it’s those of us that stand up in the toilet that steal the limelight. Yes, behind every great man is a great woman, but is that supposed to be some sort of defence of the fairer sex’s role? It starts with ‘behind’?!

Well... most Gallery editions tend to offer more for the girls than the guys, so you’re well catered to from our end ladies. That could be something to do with the fact that our team is 75% female. Not this month my friends... for our ‘HOMME ’ issue we’ve made sure that we’ve catered to the guys for once. We have a men’s fashion shoot courtesy of Gant clothing (p52). We profile some ‘men about town’, Isle of Man-based entrepreneurs Nathan Cafearo and Peter Admanson in a dedicated feature section starting on page (p83). Our new beauty writer Jennifer Parkes has identified some men’s ‘beauty’ products that we pretend we’re too manly to use but secretly like to get at Christmas (p58). There seems to be a fair few pages of shiny jewellery goodness from Charles Alexander that look suitable to buy young ladies, Christmas must be coming up! We have nice shinny HOMME Timepieces from Wilkins, and despite this being the ‘HOMME’ issue, we also highlight new beauty treatments available for guys and girls at For Your Eyes Only and Utopia (p62). Fear not fellas, its not all fashion and beauty. The Active section is also packed this issue, featuring Manx Paragliding and the Island’s Parkour Enthusiast Will Sutton. I’m off to chop wood with an axe while drinking Jaegermeister to restore the balance... see you next month. SR

MEN AT WORK 1.

Over the coming pages we ask them: Why is the Isle of Man such a good place for young people to start a business? What do you like to do in your spare time? What is your style of clothes, and which is your favourite restaurant on the Island? We’ve also heard whispers about sponsoring Millwall FC, and a new charity for youngsters on the Island – what’s this all about?

So read on and find out who these MEN AT WORK are... PETER ADAMSON & NATHAN CAFEARO

ere on the Isle of Man there is a community that goes on adventures in the sky and here Giles Morris tells us a little bit about it all.

We are both IT professionals. Nathan has worked as a software developer for quite a few years, and I have worked as a systems engineer for some of the best known companies in the world, such as Bloomberg and Starbucks. We have recently become involved with an Internet Marketing business on the Isle of Man and have been working to develop a number of brands within that. BESTPAY is one of our biggest brands in the UK. BESTPAY is, among other things, a provider of PAYE payroll services for companies and freelance professionals all over the world. A great industry to work in as we have both had spells as freelancers ourselves. It’s a perfect example of how an Isle of Man company can increase its horizons by getting heavily involved in Internet Marketing and bringing international business to the Island.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR INTERNET MARKETING COMPANY AND BESTPAY?

his month we have taken time out to talk with two new Isle of Man entrepreneurs and have decided to devote an entire section of Gallery Magazine to them. Nathan Cafearo and Peter Adamson run a successful Internet Marketing company providing services worldwide from the Isle of Man. The two gentlemen work hard and play hard. At the same time , they are both dedicating a lot of personal time to new activities from which Island businesses and the general community will benefit.

1.

In my experience people ask about paragliding along the following lines “...so you’re one of those people who likes to jump off cliffs ...” This is a common misconception; unlike base jumping, or wingsuit flying, jumping of any sort whilst paragliding is considered bad form. Also, the majority of paragliders I have met are not “adrenaline junkies” and the “rush” in our sport is more about how far we can go rather than how fast. For such a small community we have a very active club in the Isle of Man and have just come back from flying in Laragne, France.

WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ALL THE HARD WORK AND TIME A NEW BUSINESS NEEDS?

Our objective when flying is to use updrafts, thermals and ridge lift in combination, to get as high as possible and to fly safely as far we can.

We want to be amongst the rising stars of business on the Isle of Man over the coming years. The Isle of Man has been a great platform for growing the businesses that we are involved with. Our knowledge of the internet as a platform for business has been instrumental in our success, and we are now pioneering certain aspects of that in relevant industries.

Surprisingly, this is called “cross country” flying, or going XC. Watty, one of our members just smashed the club XC record with a flight of approximately 100 km. We have a website at www.manxparagliders.com that is updated every few years.

All of our members have undertaken training to fly and we wouldn’t recommend flying without training. If you are interested in learning how to paraglide visit www.bhpa.co.uk.

There are still lots of areas for improvement on the Island, in our view, when it comes to networking opportunities. We are putting together some events to get younger business people together for a chat about business in general. If you would like to come to our first Young Business Leaders Lunch at Portofino Restaurant in October and find out how we can all work together for the benefit of all Isle of Man business, then please get in touch: Male, female, established entrepreneurs, investors looking for tomorrow’s leaders or just starting out in business – you’re all welcome. For additional information telephone Nathan on 201140 or Pete on 256789.

Get trained and see you on the hill soon!

PARAGLIDING IS THE RECREATIONAL AND COMPETITIVE ADVENTURE SPORT OF FLYING: LIGHTWEIGHT, FREE-FLYING, FOOT-LAUNCHED GLIDER AIRCRAFTS WITH NO RIGID PRIMARY STRUCTURE. THE PILOT SITS IN A HARNESS SUSPENDED BELOW A HOLLOW FABRIC WING WHOSE SHAPE IS FORMED BY ITS SUSPENSION LINES, THE PRESSURE OF AIR ENTERING VENTS IN THE FRONT OF THE WING AND THE AERODYNAMIC FORCES OF THE AIR FLOWING OVER THE OUTSIDE.

Paragliders are unique among soaring aircraft in being easily portable. The complete equipment packs into a rucksack and can be carried easily on the pilot’s back, in a car, or on public transport. In comparison with other air sports this substantially simplifies travel to a suitable takeoff spot, the selection of a landing place and return travel.

D

espite not using an engine, paraglide flights can last many hours and cover many hundreds of kilometers, though flights of 1–2 hours and covering some tens of kilometers are more the norm. By skillful exploitation of sources of lift the pilot may gain height, often climbing to altitudes of a few thousand meters.

reetings men and boys, I am here to talk to you about something very important. Ladies, put this magazine down and go ovulate somewhere quiet. The rest of this issue may be given over to advice on grooming and interiors, which is great if you’re Prince Charles or Alan Carr, but there are other things that a man must learn on his path through the world. Men: stop worrying about your careers, cars and pension plan, because society as we know it is doomed. Our days of comfort and leisure are numbered, and only the very manliest of men will survive.

words | Jonah Falcon Design & Illustration | Matthew le Maistre Smith

HOW TO LIVE TO SURVIVE

EIGHT STEP RUGGED PLAN

1:

START GROWING A BEARD

The beard is to manliness what the mullet is to the Australian. It’s an expression of masculine essence and a handy way to catch insects. If you can’t grow a beard (perhaps because you are only nine years old) I recommend thinking nothing but manly thoughts about boulders and sweat. You’ll be bearded in no time, and will soon be struggling to stop your rugged hair from growing all over your body. Even my eyeballs are hairy, and I love it.

2:

TURN OFF YOUR CENTRAL HEATING

Heat that doesn’t come from something being on fire is for pussies, so either warm yourself on a pile of smouldering logs that you’ve cut yourself, or just carry on crying yourself to sleep, clutching a soggy blanket and thinking of mummy. Do eskimos have Economy 7? I think not, and they fight walruses and live in houses made of ice. If you’re going to live in a house, at least make it a rugged one.

8

STYLE MAGAZINE IsleJERSEY’S of Man premier magazine

homme

I

don’t yet know if the global collapse will be triggered by a shortage of rare earth minerals, an end to fossil fuels or a deadly plague, but what I do know is that a real man is always prepared. I am Jonah Falcon, a man so manly that they use my grundle sweat to repel grizzly bears and my beard to polish diamonds. I didn’t learn manliness at university, unlike that pretty pink ballerina Ray Mears - because by the age of sixteen I was already enrolled in a PHD in eating bark and throttling mountain lions with my bare hands. I sleep in a pile of gravel, and once punched a cow so hard its milk turned to UHT. Bear Grylls gets his nails manicured once a fortnight, whereas

3:

MAKE FRIENDS WITH PAIN

Comfort is no friend to the manly man, it makes us complacent, lazy and fat. I wake up each morning and punch myself in the balls, just to show pain that I didn’t go soft whilst I was asleep. You’re not as manly as me, so why not start by hitting yourself in the face with this magazine. Do it again. Again. Feels great, doesn’t it?

4:

HEAL YOURSELF WITH NATURAL MEDICINE

You can’t rely on doctors, and even less so on alternative medicine, which is made from nothing but flowers and unicorn turds. I concentrate on making germs afraid to stick around, and stare at things so hard that I no longer need glasses because my eyeballs are stronger than a weightlifter’s biceps. You can clean your teeth by chewing sticks, and sew up shark bites with thread woven from your rugged beard (see #1 for details). Don’t even talk to me about pain relief, as I’ve twice had to remove my own appendix with nothing but an oyster shell. It was nothing. I can barely remember it.

because quality matters

5:

I can’t even trim mine because the scissors would break. I’ve cycled through the hills of Afghanistan, and nobody said a word, because even the Taliban know not to mess with a cyclist who brakes with his hands and doesn’t bother with a seat. Yes, I really am that rugged, and I’m here to tell you that you can be rugged too. If you enrol in my eight step rugged plan, and follow my manly rules to the letter, you’ll soon be so butch that the comforts you used to know will be nothing but an embarrassment to you. Andrex? You’ll wipe your rugged bottom with a handful of nettles, and laugh at the days when you needed to cook your dinner with anything but fire and sticks.

SHUN ELECTRICITY

Things really started going downhill when men started thinking it was okay make things happen with power that didn’t come from manly sources like muscles, gravity and fire. I don’t trust anything I can’t swallow, strangle or smash, and so I do not own a single item powered by electricity. I actively dislike the ‘tame lightning’, as I like to call it. Look at Ray Mears, with his cute electric torch, waving it around in the dark. Pshh - I can see in the dark, and even if I couldn’t I’m so manly that everything I can’t see just gets out of my way.

6:

HUNT YOUR OWN FOOD

Supermarkets are most definitely not rugged, and although farmers are generally rugged, I’d rather nourish myself with beasts that run free. It’s an honest fight between man and his food, as I run through the woods armed with nothing but a home-made bow, snares and a sharpened stick. If you’re stupid enough to smell tasty and get in my way, don’t complain, because rugged men eat everything they kill.

7:

DISCOVER YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL

When I’m communing with the power of nature, I like to meditate on the powers of my chosen spirit animal. I didn’t choose the grizzly bear or the great white shark, as I have defeated both in combat, and dinosaurs are sadly extinct - lucky for them. My spirit animal is the fearsome honey badger, a ferocious African beast that is feared by creatures many times its size and is pound for pound the hardest animal in the world. I could probably kill one, but choose not to out of respect.

8:

LIVE IN A CAVE, NAKED

As I’ve hopefully made clear by now, the only way to outlast society is to abandon it. We must return to a rugged past, when men were not afraid to take a dump in the woods, run barefoot across sharp rocks in pursuit of their prey and drink their own urine - just for the sake of it. I hope that you pay heed to my advice, as it’s survival of the fittest from now on. There’s no need to thank me, but if you see a naked, bearded man running towards you with a pointy stick, then you can thank me by staying the hell out of my way.

The 6th edition of the Douglas Rugby Club Ladies day was again oversubscribed, and 60 guests were treated to a champagne reception and buffet lunch. As in previous years, there was a competitive element to the afternoon as various tasks enabled prizes

to be won, mostly of the liquid variety, but thanks to Steve Bradley of Tynwald Mills, Collette Leonetti of Utopia Salon and Ken Hedley of Livingwell Health Club, further enticement was provided.

Manx Telecom sponsors X Factor and BGT finalists charity show

Stars from The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent TV shows will be on stage at the Villa Marina on Friday November 30 to raise funds for local charity Junior Achievement. The concert is being sponsored by Manx Telecom, who are offering an exclusive £5 discount off the ticket price for their mobile customers, and will feature Marcus Collins, Craig Colton, Jamie Archer, and Signature. Isle of Man gymnastics display team Asteria will also perform at the show. They won Junior Achievement’s ‘Next Big Thing’ competition earlier this year. Liverpudlian singer Marcus Collins was a big hit from the first moment he appeared on the 2011 series of The X Factor. The 23-year-old won popular support with his renditions of ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’ and ‘Kiss From A Rose’ to name but two of a series of astonishing performances. He also shone in Motown week when an entertaining performance of ‘My Girl’ put him through to the finals at Wembley Arena. He finished second delivering an outstanding duet with mentor Gary Barlow in the live final. Twenty-two year old Craig Colton, also from Liverpool, surprised his parents and amazed The X Factor judges in the 2011 series with his audition of ‘Hiding my Heart’ by Adele. He also made it through to the live shows and did his own vocal arrangement of ‘Jar of Hearts’ in the first week. Unfortunately, Craig was voted off in a tight sing-off in week seven. Jamie Archer shot to fame following the 2009 series of The X Factor. The Londoner impressed all four judges and the 2,000 strong crowd with his energetic rendition

20

of the Kings of Leon’s ‘Sex on Fire’ in the first round of auditions. His audition subsequently attracted nearly 15 million hits on YouTube. Since performing on The X Factor, Jamie has gained a strong fan base and has taken his energetic set across the UK. Dance duo Signature were runners-up on the 2008 Britain’s Got Talent series. Suleman Mirza and Madhu Singh have been performing together for over 10 years but the ITV show was their big break. They received praise from judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan and were huge favourites with the audience with their fusion of eastern and western dance styles. Suleman is widely regarded as the world’s number one Michael Jackson dance tribute artist. All funds from the concert will go to Junior Achievement which is a Manx registered charity dedicated to helping the Island’s young people gain the essential skills they need when they leave full-time education. The charity runs professionally developed workshops in schools with the support of more than 300 volunteers from business and the wider community.

The show is sponsored by Manx Telecom and in association with Energy FM and 3FM. Manx Telecom Marketing Director, David Smith said: “We’re delighted to support the concert and the work of Junior Achievement and offer our customers a small reward to thank them for their loyalty. It promises to be a memorable evening and everyone attending will be making a valuable contribution to a charity that does a great deal of good work for young people across the Island.” Tickets are £25 and go on general sale on the Villa Marina website from Monday September 17. Manx Telecom mobile customers can get hold of their tickets first for just £20 by visiting the Manx Telecom shop in Strand Street, Douglas, from Wednesday September 5. For more information go to manxtelecom.com/xfactor

Sue Cook, Junior Achievement Chief Executive, said: “We’re very grateful to Manx Telecom for agreeing to sponsor what will undoubtedly be a fantastic evening. The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent make for compulsive TV viewing and have helped the careers of many aspiring young artists. Junior Achievement is also committed to helping set young people on promising career pathways and all funds raised from this charity concert will go towards equipping secondary school students with the financial literacy skills they will need in the increasingly competitive jobs market.”

REBBECA HOUSE DONATION Pictured above is Barry Martin and Gary Cooper from the Loaghtan Loaded cycling team with Mary Doyle, PR and Marketing Manager for Hospice. The two gentleman presented Mary with the absolutely staggering amount of £3,291 for the children’s hospice, Rebecca House. This donation was raised as a result of the great 24 hour cycling event held in June. They had also presented Autism in Mann with the same amount – a total of £6,582. Gary explained that he had personal experiences of dealing with both charities and wanted to do something worthwhile for them. The Microgaming Longest Day, Longest Ride challenge is organised by the Loader Loaded and was an incredible event to be part of and it was with great pleasure that Gary and Barry handed over this donation. I LIKE HORSE TRAMS BECAUSE... Two young fans of the Douglas horse tram service have spent a morning with the ‘trammers’, the highlight of the pair’s prizes in the Story Lab quiz organised by the Henry Bloom Noble Library as part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. Children taking part in a Story Lab activity session at the library were invited to choose the name of the next tram horse and to submit, in fewer than 100 words, their responses to the phrase: ‘I like the horse trams because…’ Matthew, nine, from Farmhill chose the name ‘William’ for the two-year-old horse for several reasons. ‘Because of the royal wedding of Prince William last year, because of this year’s jubilee celebrations…and because my dad’s middle name is William,’ he explained.

SAILING FOR THE DISABLED CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP RENEWED Moore Stephens has renewed it’s corporate membership with Sailing for the disabled for a third year. The £2,500 a year Gold Membership status contributes to the charity’s annual running costs. This year Moore Stephens has assisted its fundraising by raising additional funds at the Douglas Bay Yacht Club Open Day in April and the annual Moore Stephens Douglas Bay Regatta in June. Sailing for the Disabled offers adults and children with a wide range of disabilities the chance to learn and enjoy sailing on its boat, PRIDE OF MANN II. For more information on Sailing for the Disabled, visit www.sftd-iom.com

Emma, 10, from Governors Hill wrote that she liked the horse trams because ‘they look like they’re very happy about pulling the trams and do it with pride. I also like them because the drivers are very friendly. The horses are very well trained and at the end I like to stroke them to say thank you.’ Along with their families the winners, who were also presented with tramways T-shirts, enjoyed a short tram ride from the Strathallan terminus to the stables where Matthew met ‘his’ tram horse, William and, together with Emma, spent time meeting some the tram horses, feeding and grooming them.

FISHING CAT BORN AT THE CURRAGHS WILDLIFE PARK A new kitten was born a little over 8 weeks ago and as of yet has not been sexed, both it and its mother have been separated from the male because fishing cats are by nature solitary and males can be unpredictable and aggressive. This is the second kitten born to the pair at the Curraghs Wildlife Park; the previous kitten, a male was sent to another zoo to be included in the breeding program. The kitten can now be regularly seen out in its enclose with its mother but will not be fully weaned until it is about six months old and will be fully grown in less than a year. The Fishing Cat is a medium sized feline about twice the size of a domestic cat. It is found in densely vegetated areas near water in marshes, mangroves, rivers and streams in the countries of South East Asia.

APPEAL AN APPEAL for more volunteers has gone out from a local charity which urgently needs extra staff to maintain its care service. Care in Mann, established in 1988, provides all-Island support for the sick, handicapped or those going through stressful situations. It supports existing statutory welfare services, providing practical help such as for those needing short term help for shopping, collecting prescriptions, visiting sick relatives, transportation to doctors and to hospital appointments where the volunteer will, if requested and appropriate, stay with the patient during their consultation. Care in Mann is particularly appealing for people to help man its 24-hour telephone service. Michael Lewin, of Care in Mann, said, “We are in particular need of volunteers to answer the telephone and allocate work to the other various volunteers where there is a need.” Care in Mann undertakes more than 1,000 tasks each year and has found the workload is constantly increasing. Michael Lewin added, “We want to stress that the work is not onerous and anyone who can spare even just one day a month will help alleviate the situation.” Anyone who feels they might be able to spare even just a small amount of their time is asked to contact Care in Mann’s normal telephone number on 628500 for an informal brief chat.

Every month, we’ll give you the chance to pose any number of questions to a choice selection of business experts and local luminaries on the issues that affect you. Ask us anything, from how to get the most from your savings to where to start when setting up a business, explore the finer points of politics and economics or simply seek some much needed advice. Whatever it may be, we are here to help. This month, just to get you started, we examine The Taxation Strategy 2012-2016, a Government proposal that indicates areas of taxation which Treasury Minister, Hon Eddie Teare, MHK aims to reevaluate during his time in office. First put forward during the 2012 Budget Speech, The Taxation Strategy has only recently become closed to industry consultation and spans issues ranging from personal allowances and tax returns to company taxation and international relations. Most importantly, these are issues that are likely to have a direct impact upon all Island businesses and residents. So without further ado…shall we begin?

Q.

Should self-employed persons pay the same rate of national insurance and be entitled to the same contributory benefits as salaried employees?

Debra Cooper

Chartered Accountant, Harding Lewis

A.

The answer is clearly no, and I will explain why.

There are three categories of people in the workplace. Firstly, there are the risk averse (the majority) who will never take the risk of being self employed or running their own business. Secondly, there are the risk takers, who by contrast will never work for an employer as their personality will not take it. Thirdly, and this is a significant minority group, you have those in between, who probably start off in their working life as employees, but something happens which triggers self employment or running their own business e.g. opportunity or redundancy. This third category is key to a successful economy and they need clear incentives (to accompany the risks) for taking the leap into self employment. Being self employed already carries significant red tape including VAT, health & safety, employment law and company law not to mention industry specific regulation. It must not be forgotten that the self employed do not have the same rights as employees in terms of benefit entitlement, and so they are less of a burden on Government than employees. They also create significant employment. In summary, small business is the bedrock of all successful economies and they need encouragement, not discouragement. So let’s not tinker with a system that is established and works.

Q.

Should the Isle of Man aim to stay at the forefront of small financial centres by doing more to secure international tax co-operation strategies?

John Rimmer

Group Head, Private Client and Trusts Partner, Appleby

A.

The Isle of Man has had to think about its own taxation strategy and decide whether and how far it ought to assist other jurisdictions in their tax affairs. The strategy has been to lead the way in signing information exchange agreements, for example. This won the Isle of Man no friends in 2008/2009 but was vindicated when the rest of the offshore world discovered how things had moved on following the G20 summit in April 2009 leading to the OECD white list/black list. It positioned the Isle of Man as adherent to international standards, putting it immediately on the white list. It also enables the Isle of Man to respond to ill-informed criticism, based on out-dated ideas of secrecy. But we shall need to do more than simply sign up to information exchange agreements. In themselves these realistically have little direct benefit for the Island. Demonstrating an impressive and growing maturity in dealing with its own international affairs, therefore, the Island’s government has also several negotiated double-taxation agreements. It needs to expand its network of these agreements considerably and should seek opportunities to do so. It should consider, for example, making a full doubletaxation agreement the price for assistance in other areas.

Q.

Q.

Is there scope for any changes which might make the taxation system easier for individuals to manage and are current measures to support individuals throughout the process of declaring tax sufficient?

Do you think the Consultation document strikes the right balance between protecting our revenue base and enhancing the reputation of the Isle of Man as a place to live and work?

A.

A.

Q.

Should the current system based on a personal allowance level followed by bands of income taxed at 10% and 20%, with a final tax cap of £120,000 per year be maintained, or should other approaches be considered?

Philip Knop

Financial Planner, Thornton Associates

Director, Tax, KPMG

Tax Director, Boston Group

The Isle of Man personal income tax rules are already fairly straightforward, however, taxing savings ‘at source’ for Bank and Building Societies interest for Isle of Man resident personal accounts would seem to make sense (this already happens in the UK) - as would providers declaring interest charged on qualifying mortgages. I can’t see why there would be any objection to such institutions holding tax and NI numbers and it would likely reduce the number of people having to submit a tax return.

I believe Treasury is to be commended for taking a step back and asking the question: “Is our current taxation strategy the right one?” Although it was slightly disappointing that many of the issues raised in the Strategy were procedural, rather than strategic, it is typical of the Isle of Man not to rest on our laurels, but to continually reassess our fiscal challenges and priorities.

The overwhelming consensus is that the tax cap should be maintained at all costs. However, views have been expressed that there will be a level at which the cap will become unattractive to the taxpayer. Increasing this year on year is, therefore, not sustainable. Furthermore, provided the message could be conveyed externally that the Island is freezing its cap for the next, say, 3 years, people can plan their affairs with certainty and this can be an attractive proposition for some.

Many smaller companies pay shareholding directors small salaries and receive the majority of their remuneration via a National Insurance ‘free’ dividend payment. I think any move to change this would prove deeply unpopular and could be seen as an ‘entrepreneur tax’. Such companies provide local jobs and, aside from paying salaries, pay Employer’s National Insurance (at 12.8%) on top. With economically challenging times, I’d think government would want to continue to encourage growth through innovation and entrepreneurship, which in turn generates jobs.

because quality matters

Two issues raised by the consultation document are worthy of particular mention. First, the idea of combining National Insurance with the Income Tax system is sensible in principle, given that NI is a tax in all but name. However, the rate of Income Tax that would need to be charged if NIC were not also payable would be (probably) 30% or so – not an attractive proposition for a low tax jurisdiction. The second, and to my mind most burning issue, is whether and to what extent the 10% income tax band should be extended: this really represents the ideal opportunity for the Island to generate significant amounts of tax revenue (essentially the tax which was lost when the general rate of income tax for companies was reduced to 0% several years ago).

A.

It is also important that the Island continues to attract entrepreneurs who will bring the employment and innovation which is vital to our suite of offerings. It is these individuals who drive up the standards and quality of existing businesses and promote and encourage competition, which is not only healthy but crucial for the long term success of the IOM. The loss to the Island’s economy of losing a tax capped individual would be significant in terms of their overall economic contribution. The current two bands of 10% and 20% are simple enough to understand and I believe that consideration should not be given to a flat tax rate or additional rates of tax on different bands of income. The latter, in particular, would have the adverse effect of over complicating the system and ultimately damaging the appeal of IOM PLC.

You can also keep in touch with your friends on Facebook and access a growing range of local info and ondemand programmes too. The service is easily extended to other rooms in your home, just by adding more Sure TV boxes. The box has a huge 320GB hard disk allowing you to record up to 160 hours of TV, as well as being able to watch and record programmes at the same time. You no longer need to wait for a break with the pause live TV function and you can even rewind live TV. The Media Centre is an impressive additional feature to play your music or view your own photos and videos on your TV via the builtin USB slot or streamed direct from your computer, smartphone or tablet.

Ian Manton

What has been the most challenging part of launching Sure TV? Mike: Bringing together a platform that is rich in features and enhances the entertainment options available to our customers and the local community. We have achieved this by delivering key missing UK channels, a great local information portal and a local Video-on-Demand service.

Ian: Making sure the service can cram in all these great features without compromising simplicity and ease of use.

What are your personal favourite Sure TV features? Mike: With a busy family life and young children it’s the enhanced record features that will be most used in our household. Being able to set recordings via my mobile phone whilst the kids are watching TV and bring able to record multiple channels at the same time will be fantastic.

Ian: The media centre is pretty cool actually; I have an Android phone which can easily be set to share pictures and music, so I can look at my phone pictures whilst listening to music from the phone at the same time via the TV!

What will you be watching on Sure TV? Mike: We will be watching some of the US crime dramas like CSI, NCIS and The Mentalist via the additional FiveUSA and Five* channels, as well as some classic movies on Film4.

Ian: There’s a lot of good programmes on FiveUSA, and ITV4 (including the TT of course) but I’ll actually be watching iPlayer the most I think, being able to catch up on TV without having to record it first, or more importantly boot up the power hungry computer is perfect for me – can even get it set up in the spare room so I’m not tied to just watching in one location.

What was the last movie you watched? Mike: Avengers Assemble with the family. Ian: Men In Black 3.

the wedding of ian & jane perry in cuba

The happy couple, Ian Perry and Jane McNicholas were married on the 10th August on the beautiful Island of Cuba. The couple spent three wonderful days in the city of Havana prior to flying to their beach resort to join 19 of their friends and family in the resort of Guardalavaca. Their special day was spent enjoying a morning on the beach with their guests before the ceremony was performed late afternoon. The ceremony was in fact later than expected as the bride was collected from her room at 4.45 for the planned 4 O’clock service, the Cuban way is very Manyana Manyana. The bride was given away by her son Joseph and was attended to by her beautiful daughter Amy and her good friend Sara Brindle. Jane’s son Luke had the responsibility of the rings and looking after the Groom together with Ian’s best man Julian Brindle, who delivered him safely to the beach, well after a quick detour to the lobby bar for a cheeky whiskey and coke!! The short and romantic ceremony was performed in front of their friends and family under a white pergola on the beach. The couple and their guest then indulged in Champagne and some Cuban entertainment, followed by some big fat Cuban Cigars!! The celebrations continued over a romantic Dinner in the beach front restaurant. On their return the couple held an evening reception at the Claremont to celebrate with friends and family who were unable to make their wedding in Cuba.

‘Outer Space’ is the Sayle Gallery’s contribution to World Space Week – an international celebration of science and technology launched by the UN in 1999 and held in October every year since.

Three years on from his last solo exhibition, Sayle Gallery artist Chris Powles is exhibiting thirty watercolours in the atmospheric show ‘Seeking Solitude’. These works reflect a search for places away from the bustle and noise of modern society, and where Chris discovered that the landscapes transmitted their own ambiences.

Garretts Gallery Now - 27.10.12 Saturday/Tuesday/ Wednesday 10-6pm Karl is 50 years old, originally from Peel and now lives in Douglas; he is currently studying for a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Isle of Man College. He is a previous winner of The Norman Sayle Prize for Art - a competition run by the Archibald Knox Society and sponsored by Isle of Man Post Office. “Mostly Naked” is a selection of lighthearted paintings, sculptures and poetry – highlighting the different images of nakedness. Karl has used his own body as a brush and says, “I hope the public enjoy looking at my work as much as I did creating it. It’s a tongue-in cheek view of the naked body – and hopefully that is how it will be viewed! I love texture and movement and each piece is unique in itself as each one has a different feeling or mood that comes from my inner most thoughts.” There are some images (not photos) of male nudity so parental guidance is advised.

Unit 11, Kirby Farm Industrial Estate, Vicarage Road, Braddan. Tel: 456854 / 450294 E-mail: garrettsgallery@manx.net www.garrettsgallery.webs.com

The dates commemorate the launch of the first human-made Earth Satellite – Sputnik 1 – in October 1957, and the signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in October 1967. Images sent back from satellites and rockets as well as long-held mystical beliefs have all contributed to this exciting and varied exhibition at the Sayle Gallery, which was initiated by artist David Maddrell: “The eight artists involved have added to the wonderful sprinkling of space dust the Isle of Man has come to enjoy of late – visits by Professor Brian Cox and NASA astronauts stand out - as well as more prosaic financial incentives for companies involved in space and satellite exploration from the IoM Government,” says David. “Imaginations have been fired up, and this exhibition draws on the talents of Sayle Gallery artists to help celebrate all things ‘space’”. David’s own work in the exhibition includes etchings and screen prints, along with a large circular painting of a character titled ‘Heavenly Ambassador’ complete with a heavenly host in gold around the rim. Bryony Harrison’s work stems from nebulae (clouds) in space, influenced by photos taken from the Hubble Space Telescope, and although Rosi Robinson looked at similar photos, she used them as a jumping off point and went on to think about quantum physics, black holes, seething energy and tremendous violent collisions, all of which influenced her finished work. Eileen Schaer has considered the ‘outer space’ theme on completely differently, and one of three extraordinary works of visionary poetic painting from her wonderful imagination depicts a Hare “Balanced on the Moon”. Chris, who has lived on the Isle of Man since 1975, has always felt an affinity with the Island’s dramatic landscapes: “I intend these paintings to convey a sense of history. All the landscapes have their own atmospheres, as if the deeds of the past have been permanently scored into them,” says Chris, “and although there are no figures in my paintings, I hope I leave the viewer aware that man has passed through the landscape at some time, leaving an impression which is revealed in my work.” Although many of the paintings appear, at first glance, to be solely landscapes, closer examination reveals alternative surreal forms: “The images reveal themselves only gradually,” explains Chris. “Some of the elements are strongly stated, but others rely on the viewer’s imagination and interpretation so I hope that visitors to ‘Seeking Solitude’ are able to spend some time looking at the paintings to engage with and discover the detail, as one might in the actual landscapes.” Chris’s work has been selected for the prestigious Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition, four times (in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012), and although his 2012 work, ‘Ramsey Pier, To The North’ is currently being exhibited as part of the Sunday Times competition in the UK, the 2011 finalist, ‘Industrial Carcass’ and two other shortlisted works will be on display as part of the “Seeking Solitude” exhibition. MAN-STYLE: THERE ARE ONLY SEVEN TYPES OF MALE OUTFIT WORDS | GRANT RUNYON :: ILLUSTRATION | OLIVER NIGHTINGALE

FASHION IS A COMPLICATED BEAST, AND BY COMPLICATED I ACTUALLY MEAN ’STUPID LOOKING AND NOT MUCH GOOD IN A FIGHT’ - LIKE A PEACOCK OR RUSSELL BRAND. THIS IS WHY I’VE NEVER TRIED TO WRITE ABOUT IT, A DECISION ENTIRELY UNRELATED TO MY POSSESSION OF A WARDROBE COMPRISED OF FADED BAND T-SHIRTS AND 80S RUNNING SHOES. The other problem is that writing about fashion mostly means writing about women’s fashion, which is fiendishly complicated and requires a vocabulary large enough to distinguish nineteen identical shades of yellow before Karl Lagerfeld strangles you with his creepy gloves. I tried watching Sex In The City,

44

and the only thing I got from it is that writing 1000 words a week will fund an apartment in Manhattan, providing you look a bit like a horse. Men’s fashion is a different thing. It’s a bit like men’s nipples - it exists, but compared to the feminine equivalent it’s easy to miss and nobody is exactly sure what it does. This sweeping generalisation may not apply if you live somewhere like Paris, Milan or anywhere with an art college, but Jersey is far from a capital of man-style. It’s true that we’re outré compared to Guernsey and Sark, but only to the extent that we don’t shamble about in animal skins or layers of our own filth.

OFFICE MAN In his day job he is little more than another suit-clad Excel drone, so in his precious downtime office man must mark himself out from his peers by an interest in a number of expensive and/or extreme sports. In practice, this means that he’s always wearing a North Face gilet and off-road trainers, regardless of whether he sails, kite-surfs, rides a stand-up paddle board or kickboxes wombats. His Levi’s are impeccably aged and his socks are made for hiking, although the most challenging environment he faces in Jersey is usually the garden centre on a Saturday.

No, it is an established fact that in places like this, there are only seven types of man outfit, as outlined below. I salute the minority who dress against the grain, but don’t try and pretend that Jersey’s tiny population of goths, bikers and secret leather daddies don’t end up buying their boxers at M&S like everybody else.

WEALTHY MAN

LAD MAN

HIPSTER MAN

An older, richer variety of finance man, wealthy man is only interested in the outdoors as a place to park his yacht and show off his latest mistress. His laissez-faire attitude towards income tax is mirrored by a similar disregard for appropriate trousering, which means that you can frequently make out the outline of his wizened chorizo through a pair of ghastly salmon-coloured chinos. His feet are sheathed in regulation white deck shoes, designed to reflect UV rays upwards for a consistent browning of his leathery, Stringfellow-esque fizzog. His watch and teeth are, combined, worth more than your house.

For some men, even dressing like one of the above is just a little too adventurous. Imagine Pete Docherty without heroin, or Liam Gallagher with three more brain cells, and you’ve got lad man, sporting a look so conservative that he blends into the background like a beige ninja who somehow owns copies of everything released by Coldplay. Perhaps lad man’s outer conformity obscures a turbulent interior, a soul that dreams of doing the shopping naked or turning up to work dressed like a member of Sigue Sigue Sputnik? Who knows. His style proceeds from a true personal mystery, or possibly just from Argos.

Jersey doesn’t have many true hipsters, as they naturally migrate to established centers of bell-endry such as Hoxton and Brighton, to open pop-up shops and pursue pseudo-careers in film-making or music. What we do have in abundance is crowds of decaf-hipsters, sticking two fingers up to convention by dressing uniformly like Rik Mayall in The Young Ones. Just put on your (unnecessary) retro glasses and you’ll soon spot the crowds of people talking about their lame art projects, wearing skinny, half-mast jeans (no socks, man), jumble-sale cardigans and hats nicked from grandad. All you need to do is accessorise your satchel with pin badges of fey indie bands and get a different haircut on each side of your head. Congratulations, you’re the audience for Animal Collective.

URBAN MAN

WESTIE MAN

MUSCLE MAN

Like hipster man, the wardrobe of urban man strives to convince the world that he belongs somewhere else, merely replacing “premier of the new Wes Anderson movie” with “the mean streets of Hackney”. In fact, urban man’s timeless wardrobe of cheap gold and vintage sportswear has often led to girls freshly back from uni confusing him for an especially ironic hipster man or a dancer from one of M.I.A.’s videos. This illusion is cruelly shattered when they wake up the next morning under his Spiderman duvet set, reeking of cigs, being licked by a pitbull called Beckham and 100% guaranteed to be double-pregnant.

Town is apparently full of posers and conformists, which is why the beaches of St Ouen are populated by fearless iconoclasts in expensive surfwear, flip flops and misshapen woolly hats. Apparently growing dreads turns a man who grew up with an indoor swimming pool into a cross between Bob Marley and Che Guevara, although I’m pretty sure that the rights Bob was standing up for didn’t involve the right to park up at Milano and a bigger portion of curly fries.

If you’re on roids and don’t care who knows it, stay fresh to death by cramming your oily bulk into some Peter Andre trousers and accessorising with a shirt by Ed Hardy or Tap-out, making sure there’s enough room for any sketchy tribal tattoos to poke out. The swirling colours of Ed Hardy’s certified ruck-wear will hopefully mask any leaking backne, and will look lovely when clashing with the vivid paintjob on your modified Fiesta 1.2. Be careful not to drip hairgel into your stereo - Basshunter and Pauly D would not approve.

shades of grey

F

or the past few months it has seemed that, like it or not, there is just no escaping the phenomenon that is Fifty Shades of Grey. Women of all ages have been gripped by the erotica epidemic, and the trilogy has now even outsold the sevenbook series of Harry Potter! But while the books may be aimed at the ladies, men can be one step ahead with the new suit collection by bespoke tailors Norton and Townsend. With bases in London, Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol, men across the country can emulate the Christian Grey look that appears to be making half the population weak at the knees. It might be excruciatingly commercialised, maybe even a tad creepy, but there’s no denying that it’s a clever move by Managing Director Austen Pickles. According to the company, they decided to bring out the line after a huge increase of requests from women wanting their man to resemble the suave sado-masochist. The character of Christian Grey is identified by his dark sleek suits teamed with silk grey ties, a look that Norton and Townsend aim to emulate. Austen said of the collection: ‘A bespoke suit means you can choose everything – you can even have a quote from the book running through the lining! In many ways having a woman at the fitting is like Pretty Woman in reverse – she often encourages him to be braver with his choices and add those flashes of individuality. A suit is a great look for a man and a huge confidence-builder.

Despite fashion critics being dubious due to its links with erotic chick-lit, the collection is far dubiously low-brow. Featuring over two hundred shades of grey, including Gregarious Grey, Glamorous Grey, Guilty Pleasure Grey and Gentle Grey, the tailoring is actually very high quality and offers a choice of sophisticated styles and cuts. If the thought of owning an outfit inspired by a Mills and Boonesque male has you cringing, then perhaps this collection isn’t for you. But, if you’re going to splash out on a well-made two-piece, why not impress the fairer sex with one inspired by their most desirable (albeit fictional) man? Besides, the free bottle of champers they throw in with the deal will probably go down well, even if the grey suit is ever so slightly naff.

Thanks to Fifty Shades of Grey we could see workplaces smarten up – and office romances blossom.’ www.nortonandtownsend.co.uk because quality matters

Bespoke Moisturiser:

Budget Clinique Skin Supplies for Men Maximum Hydrator 50ml (£28.00)

Moisturiser:

The ‘science’ behind this product claims that the lotion ‘triggers the skin’s ability to build and hold moisture. Moisturiser is vital for rehydrating dry skin, especially in the winter months, and helps keep your face firm and youthful. Shave Balm:

Yves Saint Laurent L’Homme After Shave Balm 100ml (£33.00)

More science, even down at the budget end of the beauty scale, as this product contains moisturising ingredients ‘provitamin B5 and vitamin E’. Promises to keep skin smooth and hydrated for longer, without feeling oily. Shave Balm:

A gel texture, designed to be suitable for all skin types. Keeps skin moisturised and protected both during and after shaving. If designer labels are your thing, you can’t get much better than this.

Face Wash:

ClarinsMen Active Face Wash Foaming Gel 125ml (£19.00)

ClarinsMen Anti-Fatigue Eye Serum 20ml (£28.00) Your eyes are the easiest giveaway after a long week, or a long night. This lightweight serum claims to help reduce signs of fatigue, such as under-eye circles and puffiness, so nobody will be any the wiser if you roll in to work on just three hours sleep (but maybe have a coffee or two as well…)!

Simple for Men Soothing After Shave Balm 100ml (£4.49) A low-cost product that sells out fast. Specially formulated to cater even for sensitive skin, it moisturises the skin while reducing redness and razor burn; all the promises of the designer price tag, at a fraction of the cost!

Face Wash:

Bulldog Original Face Wash 175ml (£3.06) the Bulldog brand prides itself on being ‘man’s best friend’; namely, a natural skincare collection that does not test on animals. This product boasts ‘8 essential oils and green tea’ to help clean away the day’s dirt without drying out your skin.

Reading a label that states this product contains ‘detoxifying, purifying exracts of Grindelia and Gaultheria’ may have you worried about smelling a little too literally of roses; but don’t worry, reviews say that this actually has a masculine scent, as well as leaving skin smooth and clear. Anti-Fatigue:

Nivea for Men Intensive Moisturising Crème 50ml (£6.40)

Anti-Fatigue:

No7 for Men Rapid Revival Eye Roll-On 15ml (£12.00) The cooling sensation of this gel is designed to quickly relieve tired eyes, making you both look and feel more alert. A little more pricey than most products at the cheaper end of the spectrum, but a little goes a long way, so you can be sure to get your money’s worth.

All products available from Boots store, Douglas or www.boots.com.

utopia for men

I

t’s been a while since that image of the bloke on TV scraping hair from his armpit known as the ‘Comb Over’ was making us all laugh out load! Men’s styling and their understanding of scalp & hair issues have come on a long way since then. Prominent manufactures like American Crew, L’Oreal, Kevin Murphy and Nioxin to mention just a few, have been inspirational to Hairdressers up and down the country over the last decade. These days Men who want professional grooming products can now get advice and purchase products from their local stylist!

Men’s Hair - Our advice Most guys will wash their hair every day so our advice is to use a gentle cleanser for oily scalp, Zinc based shampoo for flaky scalp, and a follicle stimulating shampoo if there is hair loss. Always ask your stylist for advice, there are plenty of high performing products available these days, so spend a little extra and buy professional brands that work.

Men – if you need advice you can call in the salon at any time, or if you prefer you can call us on 616516 or email: advice@utopiahaircare.com

Laser-IPL Treatments

It’s a near painless experience and can help you build confidence and self-esteem.

£39 per area per session

(a fraction of the competitors prices)

Many people think Laser IPL is only for the permanent, painless removal of unwanted hair. In fact, it can treat a number of skin ailments, such as facial ageing, pigmentation, thread veins, rosacea, and hand sun damage.

hair

Laser Hair 39’s Laser hair removal system is a revolutionary third generation Intense Pulsed Light process that has been clinically proven to permanently reduce hair growth. The procedure quickly and efficiently eliminates hair from all parts of the body and face and is suitable for virtually all hair and skin types, including dark-skinned clients.

is removed by using the light to generate heat in the melanin in the hair, which is transferred to the hair follicle (root) to destroy it. Unlike electrolysis the treatment is non-invasive with no downtime or after effects and is relatively pain-free with some clients experiencing only a slight tingly sensation. Laser hair removal has many benefits: it’s safe, effective, potentially permanent and virtually painless.

The process uses the energy from a light source, which is taken up by the pigments in the skin, hair and blood vessels. The hair

irstly, it’s important to say that this article is not dripping with sarcasm. I genuinely think there are many times when it must be brilliant being a man. T

he children are back at school, the nights are drawing in, the heating is on and there is not a lot to look forward to, other than Christmas, and the slightly daunting prospect of the Christmas shopping!

Men can be notoriously difficult to buy for but often appreciate something in liquid form and there are many different spirits and liqueurs around that make an interesting and unusual present this Christmas. At this time of year, the big brand owners begin their advertising, chasing hard for market share during the festive period. While they give consistency and reliability, the lesser known producers offer more individual character and better value with more money invested in the product rather than in the marketing, making them better value for money. A few specialist drinks worth considering, and not limited to Christmas! Evan Williams Bourbon is a well kept secret. Evan Williams was the first producer of Bourbon whiskey in Kentucky. He grew corn but he ended up with more than he could trade and, because it went bad during transportation, he decided that his best option was to make a whiskey. He soon realised its potential and, in 1783, set up a distillery, becoming Kentucky’s first distiller, with Jack Daniels following in his footsteps several years later. Slightly less sweet than the number one selling brand, the Evan Williams Extra Aged (£22.50) is a fabulous classy alternative. For the true Bourbon lover, at £32.50, the Evan Williams Single Barrel 2002 makes a great present. It is incredibly smooth, with aromas of milk chocolate and vanilla, and flavours of vanilla, oak, spice, almond and a hint of honey.

From closer to home comes Chase Vodka, the only vodka produced from British potatoes. William Chase originally set up Tyrrells crisps. He had noticed that the smaller potatoes, that he could not use for his premium crisps, were going to waste and saw an opportunity to put them to a different use. He started production after selling Tyrrells and his first Vodka was produced in 2008. Since then he has developed a range of products including a Gin made from apples (£39.95), vodka based liqueurs from elderflower, rhubarb and raspberry (£19.75), and the unique Marmalade Vodka (£39.25) in its distinctive orange bottle. The traditional Chase Vodka (£36.75) was voted ‘Best Vodka in the World’ in 2011. Cognac Maxime Trijol Grande Champagne VSOP Maxime Trijol is a family business based in the Grande Champagne region of Cognac and they produce fine and elegant Cognacs. The VSOP was aged for 15 years rather than the 4 year minimum for a VSOP, giving a wonderfully smooth Cognac with toffee aromas and some caramel and orange flavours. This offers tremendous value for money at £40.95 in its own gift box. Don’t be afraid to try it instead of one of the big brands. You will not be disappointed. Fifty Pounds Gin A few years ago, it was Gordons, Tanqueray or Bombay. Now there are hundreds of different types of gin on the market, all differing in character.

of fifty pounds on all gin producers, to try to prevent the production of large quantities of very dubious quality gin. Fifty Pounds (£32.95) is produced by Thames Distillers, a small distillery who have been producing Gin for over two centuries. It is a delicately aromatic gin with some juniper character and a lovely citrus touch, and makes the perfect G & T! Anyone with a sweet tooth will love the Fragola liqueur from specialist liqueur and Grappa producer, Tosolini. Produced from and containing tiny wild strawberries, this is a intense liqueur, not too sweet, with well defined strawberry flavours and is a delicious alternative to crème de cassis to go into your Christmas Fizz. £23.75

There was a Fiat 600 that looked like it’d been dragged striaght out of a lake that had beaten us to every single town despite having a top speed of under 60mph. On a good day.

The basic gist of the event is to acquire a vehicle for less than two-hundred and fifty of your scraggiest, dog-eared English pounds, decorate it however you choose (the greater the absurdity, the greater the reward) and then drive it from Calais via nightly stop-offs in certain towns to everybody’s least favourite seafront Mafioso run city; Naples. The rest of the route is entirely up to you. Being gluttons for punishment (read: too miserly to pay 100€ in French tolls) we headed straight for Belgium, ending up lost whilst attempting to navigate around Brussels and becoming firmly lodged in the midday city centre traffic before a not-so-speedy

Livigno is an Italian town that becomes so inhospitable during the winter month that they declared it tax free as an incentive for people to settle there. After topping up with slightly less ridiculously priced fuel, we noticed a shop that was proudly selling tax free ‘zucchero, alcool & sigarette’. Now, my Italian is limited to less words than I have fingers but it seemed that the establishment we had stopped at was selling duty free cigarettes, alcohol and sugar.

blast down the hard shoulders of Luxembourg at the mercy of a contraflow system of epic proportions spanning a good 40km of motorway in a sneaky, failed attempt to avoid traffic. Then it was a hop across the border into Germany before dropping into Switzerland’s Sarnen, our destination for the evening. All of this was no easy task given the level of alcohol consumption that had inevitably been reached the night before in Calais. Switzerland to Italy was a fairly smooth transition via two passes which transpired to be the ‘wrong’ passes yet we still made it to Andermatt for lunch at the same time as many other teams. The lads in the ‘Paddywagon’, an ex-funeral director’s Volvo limousine that looked more like a cross between an Irish dignitary’s car and a mobile disco that made animal noises to boot were struggling with cooked brakes and had to clamp one brake line after a caliper seized, leaving them with no rear brakes. Ouch. At this point we also noticed a worrying trend.

68

Speeding fines averted in Chur and some tail-out fun thrown in for good measure, I managed to miss the gargantuan sign for Livigno and make a u-turn onto the wrong side of the road around a blind corner. Time for a driver change.

That’s right, duty free sugar. I had no idea that duty on sugar was so high in Italy. Imagine declaring that at customs. One last winding and sodden pass saw us arrive in Bormio to possibly the most torrential rain I’ve even witnessed, which we duly sprinted across town in to get to the bar after finally managing to find out hotel having arrived at our alleged destination to be met by a completely empty apartment block. Oh, the joy of internet booking! The next day was Stelvio day, and I’m not going to lie, the part that sealed the deal when it came to signing up. Better still, ‘the tank’ was on form and when our convoy eventually managed to point our bonnets in the correct general direction of the infamous pass the excitement built quickly. Stirling Moss managed to career off of the road in an event during the nineties and I didn’t want to suffer the same fate. Although I DID want to get up there as spiritedly as possible, which we duly did. Not as spiritedly as some of the bikers who were out to play though, one of whom we met in a narrow tunnel, the distinctive roar of his Ducati closing in as we rounded the corner at a snail’s pace. I was expecting a very expensive, very red bonnet ornament addition

to be made, and how he avoided us from such speed is still beyond me. Popping the bonnet and expecting an oily nightmare, there were no obvious leaks. Stunned, I turned my attention to another team’s Ford Cougar and noticed the black oil dripping down their front bumper, fresh out on their oil cooler. Result. Their registration ended in ‘CRY’, which was apt. Lunch at the top of the highest paved mountain pass in Europe seemed like as good a shout as anything, especially as it was nearing freezing point outside. Returning to a convertible car slowly filling up with light snow, a canoe might have proved better transport down the other side. Having made it through

motorway rain refusing to put the roof up so far we weren’t about to give in and drove through the rain hoping that the ‘Paddywagon’ wouldn’t need to use us as brakes should the need arise, as agreed. Negotiating hairpin after hairpin to the sound of moo’ing and barking we soon realised their brakes were completely cooked. Deciding to push on with the others, we were back in 38 degree heat within the hour as the surroundings changed once more from an alpine landscape to fields of apples and olive groves. Soon realising that no matter how much you risk driving down the hard shoulder in heavy traffic (bikes were doing it, so why not?) there was no way we were going to make it to Vitterbo in time for anything resembling a decent meal and so a pan-team decision was made to stop in Florence for tea. Pointed vaguely in the correct direction thanks to Trip Advisor we eventually settled for a nice looking restaurant en route on the advice of our eager stomachs, where we met an American couple who were typically friendly and chatty, eager to recommend dishes. Friendly soon turned to decidedly creepy, and the husband, allegedly a chiropractor, was absolutely set on the five of us coming back to their hotel room for a quick drink and a massage. As if he were some kind of deity, this was precisely the point at which

“ MUDFLAPS SCRAPING AROUND ALMOST EVERY HAIRPIN, WE REACHED THE SUMMIT WITH MORE THAN JUST A WHIFF OF BURNING ENGINE OIL IN THE THIN AIR ” Gianpaolo, our hotelier called to check that we were still alive. Excuses made, bills paid, we exited the premises at a speed that would have put Scooby Doo to shame, leaving florence behind in a cloud of exhaust smoke before our new friends could crack out the Rohypnol. Gianpaolo, who might as well have been the great, great, great, great, great great grandson of Adonis, greeted us just before 2am having stayed late along with his less than impressed but model-like girlfriend to give us the keys to an amazing little apartment which was also the cheapest place we’d booked for the whole trip. A few hours later we’d meet the crazy hotel owner who not only told us that the ducks in her garden were her babies, but also said ‘Cappuccino’ far more than the average Italian, a drink that she was insistent everybody drink in vast quantities. After about four of the finest Cappuccinos that have ever passed my lips, we dawdled to the town square to pick up the day’s challenge and it was as good as empty, bar a few bangers with their bonnets open. Not ones to be too fazed by the tardiness that has tainted both of our lives (Henry’s girlfriend had commented before we left that she’d be surprised if we

because quality matters

even made it from London to Calais to get to the start on time) we continued on the final leg toward Naples, meeting another of the teams from our close-encounter of the unwanted sexual kind in Florence on the autostrada by pure coincidence. Lucky too, because having been on time for the start they’d found out about a speed trap looming ahead and our surprisingly clean sheet so far wasn’t about to pick up any black marks. Giving up on the challenges completely, the three cars went to Rome instead to get a bit of culture. And some lunch. One guided tour of the Colosseum and two ice-cold Fantas that seemed to be priced in Euros but using Zimbabwe’s rate of inflation, we settled for lunch before deciding that we’d have to prepare for Plan B in the event that our car either didn’t make it all the way into Naples or to its new owner. It was news to us, but this event also carries a ‘hitchhiker’s award’ for the longest distance hitchhiked during the event. The glory of receiving this mantle had been covered from the very start by an American girl who turned up without a car who had complimented ‘the tank’ in Bormio. I told her it was all hers, and glass shattered for miles around, such was

her excitement. Not wanting to have the car scrapped and not having a huge amount of time the next morning as there are a mere two flights a day from Naples to London (we were on the early one) we hoped that she’d still be able to give the car a home but nevertheless started to spray paint over out names and remove all of the paperwork from the car, including around £1,400 of repair bills from the previous owner that I’d not seen until this point. Needless to say, the moment you crack out a can of spray paint and start aiming it at a car the police generally manage to turn up and not possessing a great command of the Italian language we all decided toget the hell out of Rome, sharpish. A not-so undercover car tailing us, we hit the ramp onto the Autostrada heading south and I guess they decided we were no longer their problem. Naples was calling. You know when you’ve reached Naples. Even if you had ignored the road signs that seem to provide multiple routes in (and there was me thinking that all roads led to Rome) it’s the bags of rubbish lining the roadside that gives it away. I’d been told not to wear a watch in Naples by someone who was born

there, and we’d packed our bags and locked the boot just in case we had to run. Sticking a GPS to the windscreen in a convertible with the roof down was almost unthinkable, even if our sunglasses cost more than the car itself, so we were at the mercy of the Neapolitan traffic whilst attempting to follow the guys (and girl) in front. Imagine a road about 40 feet wide with no markings and then add 6 or 7 lanes of traffic. Throw in about sixty scooters and motorbikes per square metre, everybody fighting for that four inch gap just up ahead and you’re getting close to what driving in Naples involves. Then just for the hell of it, imagine someone driving

waited for our arrival she showed us to our room and gestured to three landmarks from the balcony; ‘building giallo’ across the street with ‘24H GARAGE’ emblazoned above the entrance, Capri in the distance and another offshore outcrop of dim lights before bidding us arrividechi and leaving. Presenting our weapon of choice to the chap at the valet parking place Isabella had promised would provide free parking, he wasn’t convinced when I proclaimed ‘machina giallo mucho bene’ and provided me with a ticket. Wandering back toward the seafront with only a photograph of somebody else’s Google maps that I had cunningly acquired earlier to show us to the

miles, climbing the 2757 metre summit. Our expectations of the challenges had been somewhat greater than what they provided in reality. We were expecting cryptic clues and photographs to prove you’d correctly solved them and followed the prescribed route but what we were met with were much lazier ‘take as many photos of other teams as possible’ tasks amongst similar others. Add to this booking a hotel through the organisers upon their advice and being stung for 110€ per person when we had understood that it was to be 110€ for a room. Irritatingly, teams who booked directly with the hotel in question on the night secured rooms for 40€ per person based on 3 sharing and we were left with a

endpoint we were shocked to be greeted by a familiar voice. An American voice. Hands were shaken, documents signed over, parking slips and telephone numbers exchanged - we could finally relax. We’d made it, avoided being shot or mugged and had found a new home for our car. Picture next around 100 Brits imbibing Heineken at an ungodly rate from the largest green beer bottles I’d ever seen for a mere 3.50€ from a kebab shop opposite the seafront followed by a high speed taxi convoy through a now almost eerily silent city and then a distinct lack of memory until 7am the next morning where, having returned to the room just in time for 90 minutes of sleep it was time to find the airport and undo all of the miles we’d travelled southward in just a little over two hours.

sour taste in our mouthes. Oh, and that was to be paid in cash - their card machine had unfortunately broken that afternoon. Given that the event is in its 10th year of running with a largely unchanged route that could have been planned from anywhere with an internet connection to choose nightly meeting points on Google maps and send a couple of emails to the starting and finishing locations the £200 entry fee at this point also seemed a little steep.

“ CLOSE YOUR EYES AND IMAGINE SLIPPING INTO A BUMPER CAR. YOU’RE GETTING CLOSER TO WHAT DRIVING IN NAPLES INVOLVES ” AGAINST the flow of traffic, frantically beeping their hooter only to cut across said 6 or 7 lanes and down an alley with a no entry sign. Close your eyes and imagine being at a fair, handing over your token for the bumper cars. Now you’re getting closer still to what driving in Naples involves. Clearly into the swing of thinking like a Neapolitan and in the face of being cut off from the team we were following by not one, but two buses AND a car all descending and merging in simultaneously my teammate decided that switching into sport mode, kicking her down into first and firmly holding down the hooter whilst travelling flat out into the unfolding carnage would be the best option. Muttering ‘no mate’, I closed my eyes, fully expecting to find out first hand what it feels like to be sandwiched between two buses that are likely operated by the Mafia. When I opened them, the hooting had stopped and I was greeted by the familiar sight of a Fiat Punto with two guitars and a keyboard glued to the roof. Miraculously, we’d made it. Checking into Caracciolo 10, our sixth floor converted contemporary apartment hotel where Isabella, the owner had patiently

Racing to the clouds: Not quite Pike’s Peak

As we all know, things don’t always go as smoothly as we might like. We were fortunate in that our car managed to take absolutely everything we threw at it without fault, although she did sound a little tired and wheezy at the peak of the Stelvio pass, but quite frankly I’m sure I’d sound tired and wheezy if I’d have just sprinted for

Oily tears: Some teams used oil and petrol in almost equal quantities. Ouch.

Nevertheless it was a fantastic journey, if only one that you’d necessarily want to experience once, and we met some great people whilst taking part. Something else that it was for me was inspiring. The sights, the focus on making the travelling part of the experience as a whole rather than a necessary evil to get to your ultimate destination and just making things up as you go along. All I can think of now is getting a few bikes together, taking a month off and riding to wherever the hell takes your fancy. Who’s with me?

Naples by night: The view inland from our hotel room. Minus the rush-hour madness.

his month we have taken time out to talk with two new Isle of Man entrepreneurs and have decided to devote an entire section of Gallery Magazine to them. Nathan Cafearo and Peter Adamson run a successful Internet Marketing company providing services worldwide from the Isle of Man. The two gentlemen work hard and play hard. At the same time, they are both dedicating a lot of personal time to new activities from which Island businesses and the general community will benefit.

Tell us about your Internet Marketing company and BESTPay? What do you want from all the hard work and time a new business needs? We want to be amongst the rising stars of business on the Isle of Man over the coming years. The Isle of Man has been a great platform for growing the businesses that we are involved with. Our knowledge of the internet as a platform for business has been instrumental in our success, and we are now pioneering certain aspects of that in relevant industries. We hear you are starting a new Entrepreneurs Club on the Island, tell us more… There are still lots of areas for improvement on the Island, in our view, when it comes to networking opportunities. We are putting together some events to get younger business people together for a chat about business in general. Why is the Isle of Man such a great place for young people to start out in business? There are many reasons to consider the Isle of Man to be a great place for young people to make a start in the world of business: localised markets, ease of access to banking and finance, word of mouth travels fast, and so on. But overarching all of that for us is the unrivalled access and assistance that we have from the Isle of Man government when compared to larger jurisdictions. If we could pass on one word of advice to other young business people on the Island, it would be to consider the government to be your friend rather than foe. Ok, sure, with the piles of form filling to go through and a tax bill at the end of each year – not to mention the odd parking fine – it’s easy to view government as an agent for bad within your business. However, all of these things are a fact of life no matter where you live. Spare a thought for those business owners around the world, who have ten times the bureaucracy to contend with, and once they’ve dealt with the government then the organised crime gangs want their piece of the action – plus their votes in elections may end up making no difference to their lives at all.

We are very fortunate to have one of the most approachable governments in the world. Whether you need to have a chat with the VAT office on Banks Hill, the Income Tax department 400 yards up the road, or the DSC with National Insurance enquiries just round the corner – it’s possible to speak face to face with every government department within one day. And not only that, but they will actually accommodate you too. Try that in London, New York, Beijing, Moscow, almost anywhere, and see how you get on. The Department of Economic Development (DoED) under the leadership of John Shimmin MHK has a long list of support initiatives from New Business Start-up schemes to assistance towards training costs, help to find business mentors, grants towards rentals, National Insurance holidays for new employees, and the list goes on. Familiarise yourself with this list, use it,

and arrange a meeting today to discuss what you’re doing with John or one of his staff and see where it takes you. The DoED’s motto is “Where You Can!” Check out their website at www.whereyoucan.im.

sponsorship Nathan, BESTPay and Millwall FC? Tell us more… Well, Ray James who is the Commercial Director of Millwall is a personal friend of mine. He invited me to last season’s Championship play-off final between West Ham and Blackpool at Wembley. He wanted to pitch the benefits for us of working with a club like Millwall FC. Millwall is a very family friendly club, and with their location so near to the City of London I felt that it would be a great place to start our first business deal with a professional football club. As it has

transpired, the deal with Millwall couldn’t have worked out better for us. I recently invited some key clients of ours to a match. Ray (who’s an absolute gent) made the evening perfect for us. We were able to host a meeting in the boardroom at The New Den, have a nice meal and then watch the game from the Director’s stand. We had shaken hands on a potentially huge contract, before the evening was even over. Pete and I are massively into PR, as you can see from this dedicated section in Gallery Magazine. Why start a new Isle of Man Charity? The aim of the BEST Children’s Charity is to give youngsters access to opportunities that they would otherwise not be afforded to. We firmly believe that anyone can achieve success if they are given access to such opportunities to learn and grow at an early age. Our charity will not be involved in supporting young people in their everyday lives – we’ll leave that to other more qualified charities – but we aim to make available the opportunities to take part in team building type events. We will be donating an amount ourselves each month and welcome any additional donors. The secondary goal of our charity is to benefit the local businesses that we are able to link up with to provide the events for the young people that we assist. The Isle of Man is so full of things to do, ways to become involved in outdoor pursuits, local businesses, sports etc. We want to be able to link up local business with those who want to be involved, but otherwise can’t. We will be arranging adventure days, rock climbing, flying planes, karting, coasteering and even sea fishing. We want to draw young people away from their Xboxes, bus shelters and McDonald’s and get them involved in activities that will help towards their future. We both know from our own experiences how easy it can be to start on the wrong path when the right one is so close by. Our first event will be to take a group of budding young footballer boys and girls to Millwall FC, where they will get a chance to meet with the management and the players and to watch a professional football match at close quarters. It’s impossible to understate the amount of inspiration that young people can take from being involved in sports and business on that level. It’s something that they don’t have access to on the Island.

THE NICER

THINGS IN LIFE Pete, why do you two like Portofino Restaurant and the Peter Luis clothing store so much? It really is part of the desire to work hard to be successful and to enjoy the nicer things in life. When you work hard you expect the same from everybody else. We regularly have a meal at Portofino. Mario’s team put a huge amount of effort into making sure that everything they serve you is amazing. A beautiful meal in a premier restaurant has to be one of the best ways to enjoy an evening in Douglas. We also shop in Peter Luis, as they stock a really great range of clothes from Gant, State of Art and other brands we are fond of, including formal wear. There will always be an Island attitude towards fashion here, which pretty much stamps out the extremes of fashion that are normal in large cities like London. Peter Luis caters for those of us who really want to wear the latest and the best of fashion. Check out some of the autumn/winter range that has just arrived in store over the next couple of pages.

KPMG ANNOUNCE THIRD ANNUAL EGAMING SUMMIT KPMG has announced that it will be holding its third annual eGaming Summit on the Isle of Man in 2012, once again bringing the sector’s major players together to discuss the Island’s role in this fast-paced international marketplace. The third KPMG eGaming Summit will be held on Thursday 22nd November 2012 at the Mount Murray Hotel and key stakeholders and decision makers from the Government, eGaming operators, service providers and industry bodies will attend to discuss trends and developments in the online gaming sector. Russell Kelly, Director responsible for eGaming services at KPMG, commented: “I am very pleased to once again be running this event, which has seen great support from the local and international eGaming community, for the third year running. As a fast moving industry, it is extremely beneficial to meet annually, particularly given the many challenges and opportunities we face currently” The Summit is expected to be as well attended as last year’s event, which stretched the venue’s capacity with almost 180 delegates present on the day. Previous Summits have featured presentations and panels on topics such as tax and regulation, security and fraud prevention, online payment processing, hosting and infrastructure and key market trends, amongst many others. This year KPMG have chosen to make an addition to the format of the day, with ‘break out’ sessions running in parallel with the speakers in the main room. These smaller sessions will be in a more interactive, workshop style, with short presentations followed by periods of open discussion, and will focus on technical aspects of interest to operators and case studies designed to educate and advise those starting out in the sector. Micky Swindale, the Associate Director responsible for organising the summits, added “The increasing interest in our annual summit is evidenced by the fact that we have all our sponsors in place three months before the event, with our major sponsors this year being Continent 8 Technologies, PokerStars and Experian, but a host of operators and service providers also involved as sponsors – all of whom are featured on the event website which can be found through www.kpmg.co.im

Appleby Announce Partnership with Junior Achievement

SPorts & Dinning CLub - An Evening with julian lloyd webber

Appleby (Isle of Man) LLC is pleased to announce the launch of its latest corporate responsibility initiative in partnership with Junior Achievement Isle of Man.

Over 700 attended what was a unique opportunity to spend an intimate evening with one of the world’s most renowned musicians.

Aimed at upper sixth form students the Appleby Academy will launch in Ballakermeen, Castle Rushen, Queen Elizabeth II, Ramsey Grammar and St Ninians High Schools this week and aims to give young people on the Isle of Man real life experience of working with an international organisation.

Widely regarded as one of the most creative musicians of his generation, Julian performed favourite classics, accompanied by Pam Chowhan on piano, including Bach, Faure, Saint Saens and Debussy as well as by his father William and brother Andrew. Julian reminisced on his many collaborations with musicians as diverse as Yehudi Menuhin, Joaquin Rodrigo, jazz greats Cleo Laine and Stephane Grappelli as well as Elton John and, of course, his brother Andrew.

With the help of an Appleby mentor, students will present their ideas on how they would meet a particular business challenge for the chance to win a paid summer placement at Appleby. Sean Dowling, Managing Partner of Appleby (Isle of Man) LLC commented: “Junior Achievement’s commitment to students on the Isle of Man is fantastic and we are pleased to be working with them on this exciting new initiative. Appleby recognise the important role that young people play in our community and we hope that the Appleby Academy will help set them apart when applying for a university place or a job when they leave school.” “I would like to thank Appleby for the financial and time commitment they have made to Junior Achievement”, said Sue Cook, Chief Executive of Junior Achievement Isle of Man. “In this climate of high youth unemployment investment in education and work experience is more important than ever before. Programmes such as the Appleby Academy will help to empower students on the Isle of Man to become business minded by engaging them in real life business challenges. They will also help to equip them with the skills and experience they need to strengthen their CV or UCAS application forms.”

Julian has made many outstanding recordings including his Brit-Award winning Elgar Concerto conducted by Yehudi Menuhin (chosen as the finest ever version by BBC Music Magazine) the Dvorák Concerto with Vaclav Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic, Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with the London Symphony under Maxim Shostakovich and a coupling of Britten’s Cello Symphony and Walton’s Concerto with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, which was described by Gramophone magazine as “beyond any rival”.

Julian has given more than fifty works their premiere recordings and has inspired new compositions for cello from composers as diverse as Malcolm Arnold and Joaquin Rodrigo to James MacMillan and Philip Glass.
Julian is a passionate supporter of Leyton Orient Football Club and was the first official busker on London’s Underground. A retiring collection raised £187.00 for ManxSPCA which helps to keep animals on the Isle of Man safe and protected. Many thanks to the Manx public who are notoriously generous in its support of charities even in the present economic climate.

Commission review will cost customers says Sure

2012 STEP winners and finalists announced

The Isle of Man Communication Commission’s proposed telecoms regulations are weak and will cost islanders money, says Sure.

THE Department of Economic Development has announced the winners and finalists of the 2012 STEP Scheme, sponsored by Celton Manx Limited. The final took place at the Isle of Man College of Further and Higher Education Nunnery Campus, Douglas, and the prizes were presented by Department Members Alex Downie OBE MLC and Geoff Corkish MBE MHK.

Sure has for some time now stated that it would like to do more for its customers, but that the Communications Commission alone has the power to create the conditions which lead to lower prices, better service standards and investment in new technology. Andy Bridson, Chief Commercial Officer at Cable & Wireless Isle of Man, said: “What the Communications Commission proposes does not address some important issues in our industry which we believe to be anti-competitive and which we know hit the pockets of Manx consumers. We want to do more for our personal and business customers but are being prevented from doing so.” Mr Bridson added: “We require communications regulations that will kickstart competition in the whole market, which can only benefit consumers and the economy in the long run. It’s time for the Communications Commission to create a level playing field for fixed lines and broadband. For example, the Commission’s inaction is leading to year after year increases from Manx Telecom in the cost of home phone services.” The Communications Commission has published updated proposals to regulate the Isle of Man telecommunications market. The new regulations will come into effect on October 11th. Sure’s analysis of the framework concluded:

Co-ordinated by local businessman, Ian Moncrief-Scott, this year has seen the largest single group of STEP students and organisation projects to date with 32 placements secured. The winner of the ‘Most Enterprising Student’ award went to Kevin Burridge, who designed a rice steamer for Strix. The runner up in this category was Joanne Durber, who worked with Quinn Legal on a website design. The ‘Best Presentation’ was by Kate Holland, who has been working with Ramsey Cottage Hospital on their website. The runner up in this category was Tom Bateson, whose placement was with the Department of Health Training Services Division. Matthew Cooper was commended by the judges for his research project with the Communications Commission and Callum Taggart was also commended for his health and safety project with Swagelok. Minister for Economic Development, John Shimmin MHK opened proceedings with a short speech commenting:

The changes fall well short of what is needed to enable competition to flourish preventing consumers and businesses from benefiting from lower prices and better services in the telecoms sector.

‘2012 has seen our most successful year since the former Department of Trade and Industry first started to support the STEP scheme in 1999. Thirty-two high quality project entries were submitted by local businesses so we can greatly appreciate the achievement of such positive results by the students. Due to their dedication, the programme continues to grow from strength to strength.’

There is little in the way of a detailed schedule for change, which would indicate that the Commission is not fully committed to reform in a reasonable timescale.

‘I would also like to thank all the organisations and students who have participated and I look forward to more students and companies taking part in the STEP scheme in future.’

business

STEP Co-ordinator, Ian Moncrief Scott said: ‘Helen Cowley and Maree Bashforth, both very experienced judges, have asked me to stress just how difficult it was this year to select the award winners due to some exceptional students and the challenges of projects involved.’ ‘Each year has seen a steady rise in the calibre of students taking part in the programme and, in particular, I have noticed increasingly high standards of reports and presentations. I would also like add my thanks to the host organisations for their valuable support and commitment to STEP.’ Nick Gibbs, of STEP host organisation Strix, said: ‘We were once again pleased to support the STEP scheme this year. Kevin Burridge, the student allocated to work with us, completed a project to investigate the use of our recently developed steamer technology in to the rice steaming market, which is a new market for us. We are grateful for Kevin’s efforts and plan to continue his work with further taste testing by staff in our Asian offices, where the product might eventually be launched.’ For addtional information on STEP contact Deana Douglas, Development Executive, Department of Economic Development Tel; (01624) 682383, Email deana.douglas@gov.im www.gov.im/ded/employment/stepscheme. xml

BOSTON APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR Isle of Man and Malta based trust and corporate services provider, Boston, has announced the appointment to the Board of Katherine Ellis as the Group’s Business Development Director. The move complements the recent appointment of Bruce Elliott to the position of Group Commercial Director last month and reflects Boston’s continued commitment to delivering the international high-growth strategy announced by CEO, Greg Ellison, last year. Katherine is responsible for the continued development of all Boston Group’s business lines in both Malta and the Isle of Man. Having gained extensive experience within the sector for over 15 years, one of Katherine’s initial focus areas as Business Development Director will be on commercial yachting and business aviation. Katherine was instrumental in the launch of the Isle of Man Commercial Ship Register and the establishment of the Island’s Aircraft Register as an industry consultant, in which capacity she also worked closely with the Isle of Man Government in what is now the Department of Economic Development. Both registers have since gone on to become leading local business institutions and have played a crucial role in positioning the Isle of Man as a world leading centre for enterprise. Katherine has a wealth of industry knowledge and an international network of contacts, both of which Katherine hopes to bring to the fore at Boston and utilise throughout the formulation of Boston’s new yacht administration services, which are due to be launched at the Monaco Yacht Show later this month. This will see Boston further specialise in its yacht administration offering, providing discreet tax efficient yacht ownership structuring for personal, corporate and family office clients. Katherine will oversee what she describes as a ‘shaking up of the service model’ on the Isle of Man, which will see Boston focus solely on the administration aspect of yachting whilst remaining at the forefront of the industry in terms of both technological infrastructure and client support.

Appleby v PwC

A Clash of the Corporates

A

ppleby (Isle of Man) LLC and PricewaterhouseCoopers (“PwC”) met at Union Mills Football Club on Friday 7 September for their annual friendly football game. This year Appleby had high expectations of victory with some new faces in the lineup, whilst PwC remained quietly confident after their comprehensive win in 2011.

Determined to set the record straight after last year’s defeat Appleby played some nice football, with the best of the chances in the first half falling to Mark Emery, who’s wayward finishing would come back to haunt him.

magic from Andrew Harding to bring Appleby back into the game. After taking the ball down he turned and from 50 yards hit a glorious volley which dipped over the keeper to make it 1-1. It was now game on with both teams going all out attack.

After a finely balanced opening period, PwC earned themselves a penalty when Appleby’s, impressive but overzealous, John Turner bundled into the back of his opponent, David Kinsella, forcing the referee to point to the spot. Despite Appleby goalkeeper Chris Kirkham getting a hand to the ball it sneaked in to the bottom corner giving PwC the lead. Appleby immediately responded with a glorious chance when the PwC keeper bundled the ball after a free kick, only for Mark Emery to smash it over the bar from half a yard! At half time the score was 1-0 to PwC.

Then came the winning goal, a well worked move down the right by Richard Corke of PwC resulted in a cross being deflected off Appleby defender Simon Hall and into the bottom corner. Appleby were deflated, and with not enough time on the clock to muster any further attacks, victory went to PwC for the second year running. Both teams played the game in great spirits and made the match enjoyable for themselves and the spectators.

In the second half Appleby flew out of the traps, creating numerous half chances but just couldn’t convert. Then came a moment of

Phone home iPHONE 5 HAS ARRIVED AND ITS AVAILABLE FROM SURE! The Isle of Man’s first stock of the iPhone 5 has arrived and is available from the Sure Store on Strand Street. The iPhone 5, with its larger screen, thinner and lighter body, has already proven to be one of the most popular iPhones ever, having sold five million units around the world in its first three days on sale. “Supplies of the iPhone 5 are very limited, so I’m delighted that we are the first to have them on sale in the island, along with enough nano SIM cards for all iPhone 5 customers,” said Mike Fawkner-Corbett, Group Mobile Manager for Sure. “I must give great credit to my team and our suppliers for managing to get hold of this stock so quickly. They have worked extremely hard to bring the new iPhone to the Island.”

The iPhone 5 is being sold in the Sure store on a first come, first served basis and with limited supplies, Sure cannot guarantee that there will be enough for everyone who is interested in buying a handset. If the stock does run out, customers will be able to register for advance notification of when the next stock will be available. Because of the limited supplies and the fact that Sure has had to pay a premium to get such an early stock, the iPhone 5 is available only to Sure’s existing or new pay monthly customers. Prices depend on the tariff option selected, for example it is £399 on the £46/m Smart800 plan. WWW.SURECW.COM

With beefed up specs, the focus of this tablet, much like its predecessor, is still very much on writing and drawing. With the Galaxy Note’s S Pen, a specially designed stylus, drawing with a tablet has reached new levels. The S Pen is pressure sensitive which affects the outcome of your drawing, allowing the user to create shading effects when drawing with their tablet. The formula and shape technology also helps you to write and draw with the Galaxy Note, turning your squiggly scribbles into nice, neat, shapes and text – including complicated formulas!

One of the really exciting features of the Galaxy Note 10.1 however, is it’s inclusion of multiscreen technology – a first for Android devices. This gives the user the ability to make notes and scribbles while browsing the web, watching a movie, or checking their emails. The Note has 2GB of RAM but does have the ability for the user to insert their own Micro SD chip, allowing for a storage space of up to 64GB. However, this is just a snapshot of what is packed into this sleek and stylish tablet.

A pair of stereo speakers are set into either side of the tablet at the edge of the screen and, combined with the 1080p full HD playback, combine perfectly with the Video Hub (a place to buy and rent movies and TV shows) to give you a complete multimedia experience.

Manx Paragliding

Paragliding is the recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying: lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircrafts with no rigid primary structure. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a hollow fabric wing whose shape is formed by its suspension lines, the pressure of air entering vents in the front of the wing and the aerodynamic forces of the air flowing over the outside.

D

espite not using an engine, paraglide flights can last many hours and cover many hundreds of kilometers, though flights of 1–2 hours and covering some tens of kilometers are more the norm. By skillful exploitation of sources of lift the pilot may gain height, often climbing to altitudes of a few thousand meters. Paragliders are unique among soaring aircraft in being easily portable. The complete equipment packs into a rucksack and can be carried easily on the pilot’s back, in a car, or on public transport. In comparison with other air sports this substantially simplifies travel to a suitable takeoff spot, the selection of a landing place and return travel.

ere on the Isle of Man there is a community that goes on adventures in the sky and here Giles Morris tells us a little bit about it all.

Our objective when flying is to use updrafts, thermals and ridge lift in combination, to get as high as possible and to fly safely as far we can.

Get trained and see you on the hill soon!

P

arkour is a physical discipline of movement focused on overcoming obstacles, for the purpose of getting from point A to point B in the fastest and most efficient way possible. It combines a variety of movements like running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, leaping, and rolling. The Island has its very own Parkour enthusiast, Will Sutton who tells us more about the sport.

How would you describe Parkour? Parkour is generally known as Free Running in the UK. It was originated in France and that is where the name Free Running was introduced when it was brought to the UK as it was understood better. A lot of people often see Parkour as a dangerous sport where you uncontrollably jump across walls and roofs. This isn’t quite what we do. A way to put Parkour is as an art form, where we use our body and mind to discover new creative ways of moving around an area. This includes going fast through a course to flowing through and around any objects. We aim to create movements which have never been thought physically possible and imaginable by humans. By doing this we show how much potential our bodies and minds have to become something. Even whether to be able to adapt to extreme conditions or to just understand more in life. With Parkour comes a great philosophy too which helps us gain the control

116

and knowledge you need to overcome challenges like these. Whether it would be personal challenges in life or selfchallenges while training. Can you give us an example of these challenges? If you can stand and jump across an 8 foot gap, 1 foot high, 100 times out of a 100, why couldn’t you do it 1000 feet high at the same distance across?? Our mind causes us to block certain things out. We think to ourselves that it’s more dangerous up there because it is high, but it is just that we get scared about falling and the mind goes crazy about this. Parkour helps your mind to control and overcome this mental block and to realise what your limits are. You achieve so much control and knowledge of your body training this. Anyone is capable of achieving something they thought was impossible. Parkour is great for discovering this.

‘I would greatly love to inspire people to be more creative than ever imagined. That is one of my great challenges in life.’ So, how did Will get into Parkour? ‘I got into Parkour 7 years ago when I first seen a documentary on TV called ‘Jump Britain’. After I saw this me and my friend got really excited to try it. We researched online and discovered loads more. After that we kept copying the founders by watching their internet videos. Over time we went to England and met many friends who trained also which gained us a wider knowledge on the art.’ Check out ‘Will Sutton Parkour 2012’ on YouTube, Will’s newest short film featuring his passion - Parkour Free Running and Film Making. ‘A reason I made this is that I really wanted to feature the Isle of Man to show how amazing it can be and what creativeness you can do with it. Also to put my passions together in one project which I haven’t completed before. I have many more creative ideas to start on after finishing this project. Watch this space!’
