E

volutionary theory can be a controversial area of discussion. It’s a subject that largely starts with a big bang or a dodgy apple, depending on your orientation, and in some way explains the all singing, all dancing people of the ‘10s. Yep, the human being that is you. It’s a subject you’re not meant to discuss with people you don’t know, especially on first dates. When researching evolution it became apparent we’re all unique snowflakes when it comes to where we came from. I therefore thought I’d briefly highlight the craziness of some of the options. You’ll no doubt be aware of Charles Darwin. His camp’s evidence suggests that life first evolved around 3.5 billion years ago, illustrated by the existence of microfossils in ancient rock structures in South Africa and Australia. Then it gets a bit muddy, with evolutionists following the party line that is basically the video to ‘Right here, right now’ by Fatboy Slim. You’re basically a tadpole that’s done pretty well for itself over time, developing to form all varieties of life as you went. I completely get why religious people of the 1860s thought it sounded preposterous when ‘The Origin of the Species’ appeared. According to Scientology, a tax free religion started in the 1950s, 75 million years ago Xenu brought billions of people to Earth in spacecraft resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners and exploded them in volcanoes. ‘Thetans’ were released - spirits who attached themselves to organisms that have guided our subsequent evolution. Sounds almost as crazy as Darwin did in 1859.

ARE YOU IN? You can also view paparazzi photos on our facebook page.

We’ve been writing things down for over 5000 years and considering evolution as intelligent beings for a mere 150 years or so, largely with pen and paper. With our rate of population growth, information sharing and desire for answers I wonder which way populist thought will go, either galvanising or proliferating further in our quest for answers. At this rate someone will probably discover we were created by machines in a matter of months and blow our minds. I hope you enjoy reading Gallery in the mean time. SR

Following its discovery the gemstone was introduced to the world by renowned jeweller Tiffany and co, in New York in 1969 and though it was originally known as ‘blue zoisite’ it was renamed ‘Tanzanite’ after its country of origin by the New York jeweller when they first presented it to the public. Today, the only known source of Tanzanite is a five mile square hilltop at Merelani in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. The beauty of this stunning gemstone lies in its enchanting colouring; from ultramarine blue and light violet-blue, to deep, almost opaque blue-violet, Tanzanite is luxurious and enchanting – reminiscent of the rich culture of its country of origin.

Cut and polished Tanzanite stones can appear to change colour in different lights or when viewed from different angles and the most sought after and, therefore, costly stones are those that appear a deep blue surrounded by a halo of purple – a colouring that is most obvious in the larger cut stones. Here at Wilkins we have great passion for this incredibly rare gemstone. In a bid to secure its exclusivity and appeal we handpick our stones and present our customers with beautiful pieces of jewellery that reflect the rarity of this gem. Beautifully finished pendants with delicate halos of diamonds, or

dress rings featuring stunning central stones and diamonds are both examples of the incredible pieces we offer to you. Drawing on the increased popularity of this beautiful gemstone, in 2002 the American Gem Trade Association chose Tanzanite as a December birth stone – joining Zircon and Turquoise - the first change in the birthstone list since 1912. It was also announced that it was added to the Contemporary Jeweller’s Anniversary List as the gemstone for 24 years of marriage. Tanzanite has become extremely popular in larger, statement pieces of jewellery and like all gem stones must be carefully looked after. At Wilkins we offer a dedicated after sales service so let us ensure all your jewellery is properly cared for. By bringing it in to us once a year we can check all the claws to ensure your stones protection and safely clean it for you.

To find out more about this remarkable gemstone call into Wilkins the Jeweller on Strand Street and let us take you on a journey.

inspiration for modern

Then: Before the World Wide Web, we would spend hours perusing brochures and guidebooks at the local travel agents. Now: Access to a plethora of travel blogs, Twitter feeds and Instagram posts – all showcasing the latest travel trending hot spots – allow us to book anything from a budget trip to a luxury escape at the click a button. Simply scour the web for the best deal, punch in your card details and you’re good to go! You can even check-in online.

Deciding where to stay

Then: We relied on brochures, word-ofmouth and guidebooks – it wasn’t unheard of to physically pick up the phone and check a hotel’s availability manually. Now: We put our trust in online reviews and travel forums. Booking a hotel no longer necessitates time, and with the introduction of mobile travel apps, can now be done on the go.

Getting up and down the slopes

Then: There was once a time when skiers relied solely on makeshift tows and hoists to get them up the mountainside. Early sportsmen even opted for mine equipment, in the shape of buckets attached to rope-and-pulley systems. The first mechanical lifts weren’t introduced until the early 1900s, and included inventions powered by horses waterwheels and even a towing device fired by a Dodge car on blocks. Now: with skiing as popular as it is today, technology has advanced leaps and bounds. It’s now considered the norm to jump aboard a 12-passenger gondola or even into your own personal funicular.

Dawang Mountain Resort On first glimpse, you’d be forgiven for thinking this metal monstrosity is in fact space ship. Designed by Austrian architecture firm ‘Coophimmelblau’, this particular project will link two sides of an abandoned quarry to create a tech-savvy resort comprising an indoor ski slope and water park. It’s set to move from conception to completion in a matter of years. www.coop-himmelblau.at

Staying in touch

Then: We sent postcards or (depending on how long we’d been away for) splashed out on long distance phone calls. It was actually considered ‘ok’ to be uncontactable whilst abroad…and what happened in Vegas did really stay in Vegas. Now: We Skype, Tweet, blog and Instagram every nanosecond of our journey, from the moment we check-in at the airport to the minute we touch down – a number of today’s airlines will even allow you to use WiFi in the sky. From bikini posts to pictures showcasing your latest meal – if you haven’t updated your status in the last 20 minutes – friends and family begin to get worried.

TOTO BE? BE? ...or...or notnot to be to be

Asides from rising baggage fees, fewer on board food offerings and computers in the place of staff – there are an array of advantages to the evolving travel industry. By far the biggest benefit comes from the tech sector – staying in touch with friends and family no longer costs the earth (even if you are on the other side of the world).

Finding the local attractions

Then: The local tourist office, guidebooks and paper maps were once protocol when visiting a new destination. Now: Regardless of where you are, if you want to know where serves the nearest gluten-free, flour-free and dairy free chocolate cake, rest assured there’s an app for that.

Printed airline tickets are slowly but surely becoming a thing of the past (good news for the trees) in fact, in the very near future, you may find it difficult to board a plane or train with a paper ticket! There’s also no longer any need to cart several chunky guidebooks in our backpacks (everything we need to know about every country can be accessed using that sliver of metal we call the smartphone). Clean travel is expected to make a serious impact, whilst certain airlines are contemplating the implementation of chargeable bathrooms (no one in their right mind is going to refuse midway through a 19 hour journey). Wireless wilderness tours will become the norm… After all, who needs a trained guide to tell you that the animal you’re about approach is highly dangerous? You’ll be able to pre-order food using a specially downloaded app on all flights, meaning you won’t actually have to say a word to the steward if you don’t want too, and getting from one end of the country to the other will become quicker than you ever thought humanly possible – especially with a number of high-speed rail projects in the pipeline, namely the ‘Bullet Trains.’

They say that fashion is cyclical and, if the SS15 catwalk collections were to be believed, we’ll be spoilt for choice with a variety of vintage-inspired styles this season! Whether you prefer the feminine ‘50s or sporty ‘90s style, there’s a decade for everyone…

The ‘50s marked the end of World War II and rationing, making way for the flouncy, full skirted fashion we associate with this era. Excessive fabrics, puffy petticoats, pleated and gathered layers of tulle, taffeta, nylon and wool created a feminine silhouette and reflected the optimism and prosperity of the age. It was also a time for women to experiment with fashion, and American fashion was heavily influenced by television shows such as I Love Lucy and Leave It to Beaver. Fun poodle skirts, short-sleeved blouses and sweaters and side-knotted scarves were staple styles for teenagers.

Topshop’s fresh take on ‘50s California Girl style included high-waisted skintight trousers teamed with off-the-shoulder tops, lemon yellow co-ords and frilled shorts. Get Grease-inspired style with knotted blouses RIVER ISLAND teamed with capri trousers TIE-FRONT in pastel shades, accessorised BLOUSE £25 with headscarves, ankle socks and classic Converse. Emilia Wickstead and Holly Fulton embraced the decade’s hourglass silhouette, and you can too with full circle skirts nipped in at the waist with a belt, or simply tucking a T-shirt into a high waistband for a more casual take on the trend.

THEN

NOW

After the extravagant styles of the ‘80s, the ‘90s were all about relaxed, minimal fashion, with sportswear playing a significant part in the overarching style of the decade. TV and film icons such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston championed this casual look, and bootleg trousers, leggings and long skirts paired with platform shoes became go-to everyday styles. Grunge style, in all its moody glory, came about as bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam grew in popularity, with flannel shirts, band T-shirts, distressed jeans and Converse shoes recognised as staple items for the music-driven subculture.

At a time when the most influential style icons were The Spice Girls and boybands in baggy jeans, sportswear influences were rife – and this is one trend that is set to stick around for a little while longer. Richard Nicoll’s collection of relaxed NEW LOOK silhouettes, holographic fabrics CHECK SHIRT £22.99 and spaghetti straps tapped into the key trends of the decade, and sporty bowling bags could even be seen at Burberry. Keep it casual for 2015 and look for oversized shapes, sporty details and camisole tops, or go grunge as seen at Joseph, and throw a dark wash denim jacket around the waist of a slip dress or distressed jeans and vintage style shirt.

Perhaps not. Several European towns and cities have decided to either greatly reduce the number of road signs and parking rules or do away with them altogether. The thinking is fiendishly simple: by removing the rules, drivers have to think for themselves. This means slowing down to work out where to go and it also means pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users enjoy more consideration. Some might point to the likes of Paris or Rome, where parking restrictions are ignored by many drivers with the result that cars are abandoned wherever there’s space.

However, in the Dutch town of Makkinga, almost every road sign has been removed and there are no parking meters or stopping restrictions. They don’t even have any

But is the good old British public more accepting of tattoos than they were as little as five years ago? The answer to that seems to be a guarded ‘Yes’ but it might just depend on where you live in the British Isles and what your occupation is. So what is the stance of the Isle of Man?

ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

Dutch traffic expert Hans Monderman believes this approach is far more successful in reducing road collisions than administering to every situation. He says:

“The greater the number of rules, the more drivers’ sense of personal responsibility dwindles. The many rules strip us of the most important thing: the ability to be considerate. We’re losing our capacity for socially responsible behaviour.” Psychologists agree with Monderman and it’s been shown in several studies that drivers ignore approximately 70% of road signs. This is because they are so used to seeing them, the signs don’t register consciously and drivers often think the

to whether intolerance actually exists or just another placebo effect. However sceptic or not, for some it has proven results of increased energy and weight-loss. It is this slimming effect that suggests a simple swap to gluten-free products could provide a quick and easy solution to help us achieve the dream bikini bod- just like those frontcover celebs. It should come as no surprise a large bowl of pasta is going to leave your jeans a little tight- whether intolerant or not. Thanks to Google and your local medicine man the majority of consumers fuelling the growth in gluten-free products are self-diagnosed. We have evolved to include too much of

There are even experiments in the Netherlands where pedestrian pavements and roads are being removed so there is one large shared space. It may sound like a lethal cocktail of cars and pedestrians, but the evidence suggests there are fewer collisions as drivers slow down of their own volition. The upside for drivers is that removing parking rules, road signs and traffic signals has been proven to help traffic flow more freely, reducing journey times and lowering driver stress levels. British road planners are understandably reluctant to commit to the idea of ‘naked streets’ with no signs, lights or parking bays. However, as increased regulation does not seem to work, perhaps it’s time to try a different approach? After all, there is also the great British tradition of daring to be different and do things our own way.

The growth of free-from foods are no doubt making the life of coeliacs more enjoyable but with only an estimated 1% of the population diagnosed with the disease (an allergy to gluten), the boom is coincidental with the rise in intolerance suffers. It has been claimed a staggering 40% of the population could be suffering from intolerance, symptoms including anything from bloating and lack of energy to hair loss and bad skin. Research is contradictory

He describes himself as a late starter, having got his first at the age of 24, and is currently ‘booked’ to get another three in the next few months. “I’ve always wanted my neck and hands done but unfortunately I am probably going to need to rely on office jobs to eat for the rest of my life so it might be somewhat unwise,” he laughingly admits.. “I know full

Guess I’ll just have to wait for my big lottery win or for attitudes to radically change and I doubt either is coming any time soon. “No, I can’t say I have ever encountered any problems, although I think I am probably aware enough to cover up in situations that might potentially be awkward. You get the odd comment about regretting them when you are older but nine times out of 10 when people comment it is positive.”

No Motor Vehicles Allowed

Scott believes that a small proportion of the population still seem to find the idea of tattooed women abhorrent. “I think every one of my heavily tattooed female friends has heard ‘you’re such a pretty girl, why did you ruin yourself with those things?’ or some such waffle. Although I guess I don’t know many heavily tattooed females in office jobs, for obvious reasons I guess.”

To begin with there will be V10 and V10 Plus models, with the latter given performance upgrades spanning the engine, seats and on-board technologies. The Plus will start from £137,500.

The best ‘low gluten diet’ is not to substitute your average product for a gluten-free product but rather to be imaginative and introduce a larger variety of food types to your diet. Genuine allergy or intolerance suffers should focus on a diet of fresh fruit, veg, meat, fish and unprocessed foods. Don’t eat foods with a long list of ingredients- three quarters of which you can’t pronounce. This will leave you with glossy hair, a trimmer figure and bounding with energy. The words ‘gluten-free’ are more attractive to the health conscious than ever before, but no one can tell us why. Once you take into consideration the significantly higher levels of saturated-fat, sugar and salt needed in order to make them as similar as possible to the original product you will be steering clear of this glossy new isle when doing your weekly shop. By removing gluten from products where it is normally key, it is hard for manufactures to keep the product tasty and in shape once they cook. For example, Warburton’s gluten and wheat-free sliced brown bread has 7.7 g of fat per 100 g, compared with 2.5 g per 100 g in their regular loaf. TO BE?

Surely chaos would quickly follow and driving life as we know would disintegrate?

By removing signs and parking regulation, drivers’ ‘blindness’ of signs suddenly comes into focus as there are no guidelines. Their brains are looking for clues about how and where to drive but they are not there, so the brain forces the driver to slow in a bid to find relevant information. This is exactly the same process as when a driver is looking for a particular street or address: we slow down to give ourselves time to think and react.

In the past a gluten-free loaf would be hard to find, a vacuum-packed long-life loaf could be used as a weapon- intended for cealiacs and the occasional hippy. But now even Pizza Express is offering a gluten-free base- who would have predicted that 10 years ago? Most people probably hadn’t even heard of gluten 10 years ago.

ATTOOS! No longer, according to newspaper headlines, the preserve of bikers, sailors and those in what is politely described as ‘lower socio economic groups’. According to a recent survey about 30 per cent of British adults have a tattoo prompting suggestions that boasting a tattoo is becoming decidedly ‘middle class’ with trendy high street tattoo parlours attracting career women and respectable mums.

With the enviable figures of celebrities on the cover of every glossy magazine admitting to following a low-gluten diet, it is no wonder demand for gluten-free products has dramatically increased in recent years- record growth figures value the industry to be worth more than £0.5bn.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. It is what gives dough its elastic texture essentially acting as glue. All your favourite carbs will contain it plus it is hidden in most processed foods to increase flavour, texture and shelf life. This makes cutting it out a seemingly impossible mountain to climb- what is there left to eat unless you want the diet of a rabbit?

At an exclusive event the evening before the Geneva Motor show, Honda unveiled both its new Civic Type-R and production version of the NSX supercar for the first time. The event opened with McLaren Honda F1 BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

The NSX is the most radical car to come from the Japanese firm since the previous generation model ceased production almost a decade ago. Built from a mix of aluminium and carbonfibre, the new NSX features a four-wheel-drive hybrid power train that not only allows all-electric driving but also promises instant response from the combination of electric and twinturbocharged petrol power. Scheduled to reach the UK in the summer of 2015, the NSX will be the fastest Honda production car ever built. Following closely on its heels was the unveiling of the Civic Type-R in production

An all-new diesel engine will let the Range Rover Evoque hit 68mpg, its makers claim. Land Rover is aiming to add frugality to the Evoque’s stylish portfolio of trim grades, materials options and paint colours. Hand-in-hand with the new, muchimproved fuel economy, the ‘Ingenium’ eD4 diesel has been signed off with just 109g/km of CO2 emissions for the entrylevel front-wheel drive version, putting the car in the £20 per year road tax bracket. The improvements come at the same time as a minor series of visual updates to the popular compact SUV. Land Rovers’ fuel economy has come under fire in recent years, with the predominantly diesel ranges falling well behind the times for efficiency. However, as the firm itself admits, sales have not suffered. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director and chief creative officer, said: “The Range Rover Evoque first established and then dominated the luxury compact SUV sector generating worldwide acclaim and sales success.” Jeremy Hicks, Jaguar Land Rover UK managing director, added: “The Evoque has proven to be an enormous success in the UK with sales of 62,000 since its launch back in 2011. Clever design, class-leading residuals and competitive cost of ownership have all been contributors to its success. “The 2016 model year Evoque builds on this achievement with a new engine lineup delivering outstanding CO2 emissions down to 109g/km and for the first time; an all-wheel drive version is under 130g/km.” As well as the 148bhp eD4 engine, there is a 178bhp version that achieves 59mpg and emissions from 125g/km. form for the first time. The aggressive looks and substantial aerodynamic package of the concepts and prototype versions have been translated into production reality, with bulging wheelarches and a huge rear wing all developed at the same motorsport facility in Japan where the F1 car was developed. Powered by a brand new 2.0-litre turbocharged V-TEC engine pushing out a huge 306bhp and 295lb.ft of torque, enough to power it to 167mph and from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds. Prices are yet to be confirmed ahead of its launch this summer, but are expected to start around £30,000.

Amazon currently sells 120 million products. They want however to increase this to one billion. One billion…. Are there really one billion different items in existence? Are there? I know there were an unconscionable quantity of Friends episodes bilged out but this is ridiculous. In order to cope logistically with this hike, and to reduce shipping costs, Amazon has applied to the Civil Aviation Authority for permission to start using delivery drones, or ‘‘Octocopters’’, as Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of the online giant has since described them. Let’s be clear about this. We are talking about the second largest retailer in the world, dispatching millions upon millions of products, in slow moving drones, and at low altitude, over a starving and austerity addled populous. What do we think might happen? Let’s just say that I predict a spike in the number of residences applying for shotgun licences to combat unprecedented ‘‘rabbit infestations’’. Even if you like the idea of this new service, what happens if your product arrives and you are not in? Will you be greeted on your return home by a printed note on your door mat: ‘‘Dear Mr. Kenworthy, we received no response from you to our Facebook alerts, or to shining a laser through your windows. We have therefore dropped your haemorrhoid cream into next door neighbour’s coal bunker. With Kind regards, the Amazon Team’’. And if you live in a block of flats? Will you receive a text message the day before? ‘‘Dear Mrs. Jones. We will be delivering your sunglasses tomorrow. Please understand that our Octocopters do not have functioning hands and can sometimes struggle with interior doors. Kindly be on the roof between the hours of 08:30 and 17:00. Many thanks, Amazon services’’ And as if enough people don’t hate Amazon as it is. I’m really not sure that one billion items whizzing about in the immediate airspace is going to win people over. On the contrary. We will soon see aggrieved news agents, books shop owners, authors, musicians, corner shop proprietors, redundant post office masters and shopkeepers banding together into great yokel militias, that blast these scabby electric mosquitoes out of the heavens with whatever rudely fashioned munitions they can contrive. And what, pray, might the seagulls make of all this? A species that is but a hairs breadth from Total War with us as it is. How might they greet these undiscerning imposters zipping around at hatching season? It will be a literal shit-fest.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

And when these contraptions fall into the wrong hands? Should we, along with the dog food and hair straighteners and car parts and dildos buzzing about above us, expect petrol bombs and yellow cake and anthrax spores to really give us something to think about? And how might the authorities decide what is a Super-Soaker 2000 approaching the Houses of Parliament and what is a sarin aerosol? How might they adjudge what is a TOWIE box set over Leicester Square and what is a dirty bomb? – Difficult enough to establish at the best of times.

And what, pray, might the seagulls make of all this? A species that is but a hairs breadth from Total War with us as it is. How might they greet these undiscerning imposters zipping around at hatching season? It will be a literal shit-fest. And how, might you ask, will Amazon counteract this threat? In the only way that they can. They will send up larger drones to monitor the smaller drones. They will have to. They will send up CCTV drones, with anti-personnel devices, to limit and deter the destruction and theft of their property. So, in the very near future, what we have to look forward to is great swathes of the population battling computer controlled airborne machines for their very survival. And that, ladies and gentleman, is the premise of the film Terminator. What we are seeing is the conception of ‘Skynet’. This is real. And it is happening right before our eyes. We are sleeping-walking into a dystopian nightmare.

OUR COMMUNITY

GIVE AFRICAN SCHOOL DONATION ‘School for Uganda’ was started after Foxdale Primary School linked with Good Hope Primary and Nursery School in Namungoona, north west of Kampala, Uganda. The idea of the project was for the children to get to know more about each others’ lives but it soon became clear that a new school building was needed for the Ugandan children.

Standard Bank has donated £250 to local charity, ‘School for Uganda’, which was set up by a group of three people, including two school teachers in the Isle of Man. Chair of the charity, Elizabeth Bankes-Jones, received the cheque from Joe Smith, support worker at Standard Bank, who has been working with Mrs Bankes-Jones to forge links between island schools and those in Uganda.

‘It is very difficult to resist helping when you see such an obvious need,’ says Mrs Bankes-Jones, ‘Such a large project meant that we needed to set up a charity, and that’s exactly what we did in 2006. We now have a school for over 100 children on a five acre site, but there is a lot more to be done and the money from Standard Bank will be a welcome help towards developing and equipping the classrooms and helping support teachers’ salaries.’ For further information you can contact Elizabeth at: s4u@manx. net or telephone her on 01624 801624.

CASTLE RUSHEN TRIUMPHS AT CHARITY CHALLENGE

CITYWING NAMES DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES CARE AT HOME TRUST AS 2015 NOMINATED CHARITY

A team from Castle Rushen High School representing the international aid agency Toybox were the winners of this year’s One World Charity Challenge, held at the Manx Museum. The six-strong team of Hannah Dixon, Hazel Matthews, Adele Harris, Danielle Akitt, Charlotte Darbyshire and Jack Maylin put together an innovative presentation based around a sketch of a music producer’s demand for a charity hit single.

Citywing is delighted to announce that it has chosen the Diana Princess of Wales Care at Home Trust as its nominated charity for 2015, providing them with 24 return tickets to use for fundraising during the year on all Citywing routes to and from the Island. The Isle of Man-based charity funds nursing staff to provide respite care and end-of-life palliative care for Island residents with cancer, or other life-limiting illnesses, where curative treatment is no longer possible or appropriate, and who choose to remain at home in their last days; in effect, to provide a ‘Hospice at Home’ service. David Buck, Managing Director of Citywing said: ‘We are very pleased to name the Diana Princess of Wales Care at Home Trust as our chosen charity for 2015 and to be able to support them in a number of ways throughout the year. ‘This dedicated and worthwhile local charity provides vital services for our Island’s community, and we are honoured to work alongside them to raise awareness of these services, and raise the money to help ensure that they continue. In addition to 24 return tickets we’ll also be calling on our partners for help with some fundraising favourites, including the famous sponsored plane pull event.’ www.citywing.com | www.hospiceathome.im

12

It was an effective way to explore their chosen charity’s aims and objectives, and to highlight the ways in which Toybox successfully works to improve the lives of street children in South America. Castle Rushen was one of six schools competing in the finals of the annual competition, with each team present having previously succeeded in getting through inter-school heats. As overall winners, Castle Rushen won £3,500 for Toybox as well as the Frances Davidson Cup. They also picked up another £300 as winners of the audience vote which was awarded separately. One World Charity Challenge involves Year 12 students from the Island’s secondary schools and IoM College researching either a Manx charity that works overseas or a charity supported by the Isle of Man International Development Committee. They then put together a multimedia presentation on their findings, demonstrating an understanding of the charity’s goals and limitations and how their work meets the United Nations Millennium Goals to improve lives of the poorest and most disadvantaged people of the world. The prize grant pool is generously donated by the H&S Davison Trust and match-funded by the Isle of Man International Development Committee. In total a grant pool of £22,000 was shared between teams participating in this year’s Challenge. Of this, £8,400 was distributed among teams in the preceding interschool competitions with the remainder being distributed to the other finalists.

Recently formed Manx Charity - Manx Carriage Driving for the Disabled receives a donation from The Society For The Preservation of The Manx Countryside And Environment to acquire hi-vis jackets to be more clearly seen. MCD4D Chairman Arne Dahn commented: “Not only will these jackets make the team clearer to our individuals with a disability enjoying a carriage drive, but also enable us to operate outside during the warmer evenings and on the quiet roads nearby”. John Faragher of The Society For The Preservation of The Manx Countryside And Environment said: “This is precisely the kind of help we wish to provide to enable more Manx residents, especially those who may be restricted, to enjoy our beautiful countryside”. How does your business prepare for international events like EBACE?

Follow the advice of your teachers. Ask them what you should do and what your priorities should be. Get a copy of the syllabus for each subject so you know exactly what you need to revise – and, just as importantly, what you don’t need to revise.

clients.

Make sure you know the structure of each of your exam papers and how the questions are phrased. Try writing your own.

One of the first preparations we take is to review the exhibitor list to see who is attending the event and identify the companies and individuals we would like to meet. Once we have identified who we would like to meet with, we can then arrange the relevant meetings or dinners with our intermediaries and clients.

Revise all your subjects – not just the ones you enjoy the most. Start with the topics you find most difficult. Draw up a revision plan. Be realistic about the number of days and the amount of time each day you are going to work – and then stick to it.

We also like to check whether there are any connected seminars during the event which would be useful to attend.

Don’t spend too long on any one thing. Varying the tasks will help to keep you focused.

While we do not necessarily exhibit on a stand at these types of events, we sometimes look to sponsor or host a drinks reception. I own an investment property on the island, what are the tax implications?

There are a few issues for Manx residents to consider, some of which are discussed below. Firstly, the good news is that there is no capital gains tax. However, if the property is to be developed with a view to making a profit, then this is likely to be subject to income tax. For an individual, the rate of tax on the taxable profits will be up to 10% or 20% depending on your income level. For companies, the rate of tax is 10% up to 5 April 2015, and 20% thereafter. Some bad news is that income tax will apply to any rental income, and the rates are the same as for development profits as noted above. It is worth noting that tax is levied on the profit after allowable expenses, and this includes certain repairs, professional fees, interest charges and management fees, although restrictions may apply. Arguably the most tax efficient vehicle to hold investment property in is a local SIPP (self-invested personal pension) or self-administered pension scheme. For such schemes, IOM source rental income should not be subject to Isle of Man taxation. Tax does normally apply, of course, on pension draw down. Given the increase in the corporate tax rate for local income from land and property, the pension route may find more favour going forward. As always, specialist advice should be sought before taking action.

What are your views on the recent budget announcements?

The three things that are certain in life… Birth, death and the VAT man! It was interesting to see in the budget that, for the first time since 2010, the government is on track to balance the VAT issue with the UK. Treasury Minister Eddie Teare also put a smile on several thousand low paid earners by raising the allowance to £14k. This will greatly help the youngsters to get going in the work place. The care allowance increase to over £100.00 per week will also assist families trying to look after their loved ones at home and is an area that should be supported as it will ease the pressure on our health services. Means testing is an area which can be explored by government to redirect financial support to folk that need it, and is definitely an area that should be pursued. All in all, I would say it was a safe budget and a helpful one. I’m not sure if it could have been more dynamic in its search to attract new investors, only time will tell, but for this year let’s just steady the ship and look to the future.

hen Prince George’s little brother or sister arrives in April (or May, if the Duchess of Cambridge ends up going overdue), she or he is likely to be born in St Mary’s Hospital, London, with Wills looking on, before a bit of ‘skin-to-skin’ bonding with Kate. No doubt the Duchess is dusting off the birthing plan she drew up before having George, in which she’ll have stated her preferences on everything from the use of birthing pools and gas and air, to delayed cord clamping and even what kind of music she wanted in her room.

Boleyn disappeared into her private chambers for a month with her closest female attendants, as the Science Museum’s excellent History Of Medicine website reveals in its interactive section on childbirth (www.sciencemuseum. org.uk). No dads were allowed. But alcohol was. Women drank posset, an eggnog-like mixture of cream or milk and alcohol, to nourish and soothe the pain.

Like everything these days, childbirth in 21st century Britain is about choice. A recent BBC documentary, Childbirth: All Or Nothing - now available on iPlayer - follows four thirtysomethings, who cover the entire spectrum from home birth to full medical intervention and everything in between. But just how has childbirth evolved?

Like everything these days, childbirth in 21st century Britain is about choice.

FULL CIRCLE

PAIN RELIEF

Over the centuries, we’ve gone from women giving birth in their private bedchambers, to a medicalised approach designed to limit maternal deaths - and now, back to a trend for home births, with just a midwife present.

By 1857, when Queen Victoria was giving birth to Princess Beatrice, her ninth and last child, chloroform had become the drug of choice. But it could be fatal in strong doses, so her anaesthetist, Dr John Snow, kept a careful check. Even so, Victoria apparently passed out..

Between 2009 and 2012, the maternal death rate in the UK was 10 in 100,000 women. In 1900s America (where this data appears more accessible), the death rate was 850 per 100,000. In the century in between, medical advances, such as monitoring babies’ heart rates and the advent of antibiotics, have succeeded in saving more lives. In recent years, the use of medical interventions has increased, with more women having elective caesareans (13.2% between 2013-14) and inductions (25%). KEEP OUT, MEN In 1533, King Henry VIII’s second wife Anne

16

After a new documentary reignites childbirth as a talking point, we take a look at the evolution of having babies

By 1948, when the soon-to-be Queen Elizabeth II was in labour with Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace, laughing gas (nitrous oxide) had become the drug du jour, preceding epidurals. Penicillin meant fewer women died of infection and doctors were more willing to do caesarean-sections, which were considered risky. INTERVENTION Foetal monitoring began in the 1820s, as doctors used a stethoscope to listen to baby’s heart in the womb. By the 1960s, specialised monitors meant a continuous printout of baby’s vital signs was possible, but such monitoring was controversial, as some argued it meant the mother was tethered to the device. Forceps, originally a secret invention by the Chamberlen family of male midwives, had become popular, with - by the 1850s - doctors modifying them to make them more comfortable. BACK TO BASICS

Men were allowed to be in the room, leading the charge for a more clinical version of childbirth - Victoria’s husband Albert was so hands-on, he administered her first two doses of chloroform. It was also custom for mothers to share a warm spiced wine drink, caudle, with the women who’d helped them give birth, though that declined when doctors said it made mothers more prone to infection - nowadays, women are advised not to drink alcohol while pregnant or breastfeeding.

In 1933, Suffolk-born obstetrician Grantly Dick-Read advocated a return to more simple methods in his first book, Natural Childbirth. His ideas were ridiculed by the establishment, but his second book, Childbirth Without Fear (1942), became an international bestseller. Across the pond, midwives such as Ina May Gaskin were promoting similar concepts, such as birthing centres, water birth, and home birth as alternatives to the high-tech hospital model. Dick-Read became the first president of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) charity, which was set up in 1956 and advocates a more natural approach. Ultimately, whether mums-to-be choose to give birth at home or hospital, the goal is still the same: for mother and baby to be safe and well.

ME & MY PET

Jane Human Questions: Breed: Human, Manx, English cross Age: 35 Likes: Peace and quiet, reading and my pets ( and my family, but children count as pets right?) Dislikes: Any food that is spicy, and the dark If an animal what would you be: A bird, the freedom to go anywhere in the world under your own wings would be amazing Why did you choose a rescue pet? Too many rabbits are kept shut in cages with no space, many unwanted rabbits are forgotten about. Because of the lack of research there are also many unwanted litters, why buy a rabbit that has potentially never been handled, vaccinated or neutered, when there are many beautiful ones needing new homes, buying just doesn’t make sense – go to the ManxSPCA!

Where do you live on the Island? Just moved to Foxdale Where are you originally from? Peel, Isle of Man born and bred What do you do for a living? Currently a slave to the family, and a crazy rabbit lady Do you have any more pets? Yes, 4 kids, 2 dogs, 2 budgies, 2 other rabbits, a cat and a husband Would you have any more pets? No, our ark is full at the moment, FINANCES would not stretch to any more vet bills The worst thing about having a pet is? The worst is the worry when they are ill, they can’t tell you what’s wrong. The best is simply the joy of them being happy, the fact that no matter what someone is always happy to see you.

THE RANDOMNESS OF

FREAKS OF NATURE

MISC

Humans consider themselves the greatest or oddest example of evolution, but there are much more odd example of evolution beyond us – mostly just bacteria. These are some odd natural creations:

AN AUGMENTED REALITY

1

The parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which controls its host’s brain, changing their behaviour. This host can be anyone from rats to cats, to us!

2

Tardigrades, or Water bears, a tiny insect that can survive extreme temperatures, extreme radiation and tremendous amounts of pressure. It can even survive out of space!

3

Snottite, sheets of bacteria with the consistency of snot that hang of walls and ceilings of caves, which consume volcanic sulfur and produce sulfuric acid.

4

“Halophilic” bacterias, which survive in extremely salty conditions. Some can survive in environments ten times saltier than sea water.

5

Deinococcus radiodurans, which can survive radiation up to 10,000 Gy, while 10 Gy would kill a human.

At a new conference, Microsoft had announced their new edition to Windows, Windows 10, but that wasn’t the only thing they announced. The HoloLens is Microsoft’s answer to the Google Lens and has been in development for 5 years. The HoloLens computer is a cordless headset, similar to the Oculus Rift. The computer is controlled with your gestures, with windows being replaces with holograms. The interface of the HoloLens interacts with your physical world to make for a realistic environment. The HoloLens comes with HoloStudio, a 3D modelling application controlled totally by gesturew, which allows users to create models for 3D printing. The HoloLens headset is said to be released “within the Windows 10 timeframe” - fingers crossed it’s not left dead like Google Lens.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO... Have you ever heard the story about how the guy who invented the Segway died riding a Segway? Thought “How dumb is he?” - so do the Darwin Awards. The Darwin Awards is dedicated to awarding people who have ‘eliminated themselves’ from the gene pool by their own dumb actions, in the name of ‘keeping the gene pool clean’. All eliminations are accidental, but candidates are disqualified if ‘bystanders’ who could have contributed positively to the gene pool, died in the accident with them.

2 BILLION YEARS, SAME ME Evidence has been found of a bacteria that has not evolved for more than 2 billion years. The species is a sulfur-eating bacteria that is found in deep sea beds, surviving high temperatures. Judging from chemical composition and structure, scientists have found fossils of said species that are thought to date back to at least 2.3 billion years. The fossils were found in Australia, while modern samples of the bacteria were brought from Chile. The explanation? Scientists believe the reason this bacteria has not evolved is simply because they haven’t needed to evolve. Have been, for 2 billion years, perfectly adapted to the environment they live in.

CULTURE NEWS Entries now open for Douglas Carnival 2015

Work complete on charity project to remember fallen soldier from the Isle of Man

Entries are now open for the 2015 Douglas Carnival, which will be held on Saturday July 18th. Organisers Douglas Borough Council and Douglas Development Partnership are now accepting online entries for floats, performers, concessions and a whole host of participants looking to create a high-octane festival atmosphere the length of Douglas Promenade from 7pm until late. Entries are also open for the wheelie bin race and the Council has 20 shiny new wheeled chariots available to budding Jenson Buttons and their teams. The race was one of the highlights of last year’s carnival, attracting teams whose members were clearly supremely imaginative and not of a shy and retiring disposition. Chairman of the regeneration and community committee councillor John Skinner said: ‘Last year’s Douglas Carnival – revived after many years – was a great success, despite the disappointing weather, and it set the tone for what is now to be an annual event. Much of that success last year was down to the tremendous sense of community spirit the carnival engendered, not only among individuals and volunteer groups, but also the business and retail sectors, all underpinned by the tireless work of Council officers and staff. That spirit is very much alive and well this year too, and already there’s a determination among all parties – including Manx Radio which, once again, has agreed to be the event’s media partner to make Douglas Carnival 2015 even bigger and better.’ To register and find out more about Douglas Carnival 2015, visit: douglascarnival.im

A Steam Packet Company-supported charity project paying tribute to a soldier from the Isle of Man has been completed. Forces Support travelled to the Island to create a garden in memory of Corporal Mike Gilyeat, known as Gilly, at the Bride home of his mum, Margaret. Gilly was a member of the Royal Military Police and a photographer attached to the media operations team based at Regional Command (South) in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The 28-year-old died when the Chinook helicopter he was travelling in crashed in 2007. Six others were killed in the incident. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company supported the project by providing free ferry crossings for Forces Support. The UK charity, established to honour service personnel killed in recent conflicts, has completed more than 120 projects in the last two years, including a garden makeover for the parents of Drummer Lee Rigby. Andy Morton, who led the Island project, said: ‘It all went really well, and the really important thing is that Margaret was really chuffed. I think it was truly appreciated, giving her somewhere nice to sit and reflect. ‘The work involved stripping out what was there, the turf and an old coal bunker, then placing new paving, planters, some plants and some new garden furniture. It is a nice area of peace and calm for Margaret.’ He added: ‘The support we received from the Isle of Man was tremendous. We had four companies helping us out, including the Steam Packet Company, which is more than we would normally have on a project. Everyone came together to make sure Gilly’s memorial was built, and I’d like to thank them all for their help.’ Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward added: ‘Forces Support has done a great job creating this new garden in memory of Corporal Gilyeat. Seeing the before and after photos shows how the charity has transformed the area into somewhere Margaret can remember her son and reflect.

Manx maritime history reflected on latest miniature sheet

The Isle of Man Poetry Society has a new Chairman, Bethany de Legh- Runciman. Bethany was elected by unanimous vote at the society’s recent AGM and takes over from Ruth Baxendale, who was Chairman for the last four years.

Isle Of Man Post Office has produced a stunning miniature sheet featuring four historic Manx vessels painted by artist, mariner and Manxman John Halsall. The issue also marks a number of historic anniversaries from the Island’s rich Manx maritime heritage and is due for release on May 1, 2015. John Halsall was born during the Second World War in Douglas and raised in Laxey. The sea and ships captivated him from a young age and his father served in the Royal Navy. It was therefore no surprise when John left school at 15 to begin a lifetime of work on the high seas. He worked first and last with the Steam Packet and in between as a local fisherman as well as in the capacity of a deep sea merchant seaman. John continues to paint his favourite subjects in oil and watercolour: Manx vessels of every variety, harbour views, and occasionally the Laxey Wheel and works every day from his studio in Douglas. The Isle of Man has a long and proud tradition as a seafaring nation and for many generations its people have made a living from this. To celebrate this proud tradition the Post Office has produced a set of four stamps that capture the beautiful oil and watercolour paintings of John Halsall depicting historical Manx vessels: the Master Frank RY95, the Wanderer with the Lusitania, HMS Ramsey and Ben my Chree III. The Master Frank RY95 is the Island’s longest-surviving half-decker still afloat and was built in 1893 or 1895 by Clucas and Duggan in Ramsey and launched in 1896, to cope with the short, sharp seas to the North East of Ramsey where vessels practiced the fishing trade. She was subsequently purchased by the Kinnen family who fished mainly for cod using a long line. She remained with them until 1964 when Willie Kinnin sold her. The Kinnins repurchased her again in 1969, keeping her until 1976. After a thorough rebuild she was then relaunched in 1996 and is now a regular sight at traditional boat events.

North Sea searching for contraband. She stopped a vessel with a Russian flag only to discover that it was in fact a German ship disguised as a Russian tramp steamer and when the Ramsey got closer to the ship the Russian flag was pulled down and the German flag hoisted up, firing machine guns and torpedoes. The Ramsey sank in four minutes. There were 46 survivors. It was one of the darkest single days of the war for Manx people. Ben my Chree III was launched in 1908 for the Liverpool to Douglas route, and at the time was regarded as the fastest steamer in the British coastal waters. With the outbreak of war in 1914 she and other civilian vessels were seized by the Royal Navy and converted into seaplane carriers. Ben my Chree III took part in the operations at Gallipoli in 1915 and her place in history was secured when she assisted in the sinking of the first vessel to be destroyed by a torpedo launched for aircraft. Her life proved short when she was hit by Turkish gunfire in 1917.

‘I look forward to chairing the monthly poetry meetings and encouraging new and aspiring poets,’ said Bethany. ‘I hope to work well with the Isle of Man Poetry Society committee to develop the many ideas we have to promote poetry in our Island. On behalf of the committee I would like to extend sincere thanks to Ruth Baxendale, who did such a wonderful job as Chairman.’ Bethany was born in Jarrow and lived in South Manchester, before moving to the Isle of Man in 1997. Her father was born and grew up in the Island and she has many relatives here. ‘I have so many happy memories of the Isle of Man from childhood holidays,’ she said. ‘I’ve always loved the Island and feel blessed to live here.’ While Bethany’s background is in pharmacy, she has always been creative, through ballet, tap, line dance, Irish dance, drama, music, art and poetry. She started writing poetry in 1995 when she was very unwell and found it helped her to cope. Today her poetry is inspired by the world around her. As well as writing poetry, she enjoys encouraging others to write it. She spent a day in Laxey Primary School helping pupils to write poems about ‘Waterdragons’, and recently led a series of poetry workshops at the Island’s 2015 Fairtrade Conference.

In addition, the presentation pack beautifully illustrates paintings of the Peggy of Castletown and the Steam Packet’s Mona’s Queen.

RTC chairman confirms fifth term final Ramsey Town Commissioners’ chairman Captain Nigel Malpass will not seek to serve a sixth term or be considered for a lead role in the Commission for the 2015-2016 municipal year.

In May 1915 luxury cruise liner Lusitania, which was launched by the Cunard Line in 1906 and holder of the Blue Riband, sank in just 18 minutes after she was torpedoed by a German U-boat, causing the deaths of 1,198 passengers and crew. The first vessel to the scene was a small Manx fishing boat from Peel, the PL11 Wanderer. The little boat picked up numerous survivors and took two life boats in tow.

Captain Malpass confirmed his decision at the Commission’s public board meeting held on Wednesday March 18th when he urged members to consider carefully whom they would wish to take over the position of chairman, a role that demanded a considerable commitment in personal time. He said: ‘Over the five years I have served as chairman I have attended an average of around three official functions or meetings a week. I would estimate that those attendances combined with correspondence and dealing with ratepayers’ enquiries have required a weekly commitment of up to 20 hours. I have been honoured to carry out those duties but after five terms as chairman I believe it is time to step down.

On August 8, 1915 HMS Ramsey, former Steam Packet vessel which served with the Royal Navy was on patrol duty in the

‘With the 2015-2016 municipal year being the 150th anniversary of Ramsey Town Commissioner the role of chairman will be especially demanding, but also enjoyable and rewarding. I am confident that whoever the new incumbent might be, he or she will enjoy the full support and commitment of their fellow members as I have these past five years.’

‘EMBERS’ – SAYLE GALLERY, DOUGLAS

39 Victoria Street, Douglas THE PREVIEW OF THE ‘EMBERS’ EXHIBITION AT THE SAYLE GALLERY LAST MONTH ATTRACTED A LARGE CROWD TO SEE THE WORK OF LOCAL ARTIST GARY BENNETT AND RENOWNED UK WAR ARTIST ARABELLA DORMAN. Gary’s work is evocative of both his own time as a soldier and the effects of conflict on individuals and society. He is the official artist of the British Nuclear Test Veterans Association and his work has been widely recognised by the British Legion, members of which were present at the event. London-based Arabella was embedded with British troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and has travelled independently in the latter. Although she portrays the hardships of war, her work also shows that there is hope for the future, particularly in her representations of Afghan children. Arabella was on the Island for a few days, in which she talked to Isle of Man College students about her experiences and also gave a short presentation to Sayle Gallery friends and supporters. Visitors to the exhibition’s preview included both retired and serving soldiers, Speaker of the House of Keys, Steve Rodan, other members of Tynwald and the IOM Arts Council, and representatives of exhibition supporter the Isle of Man Steam Packet, as well as local artists and friends of the Sayle Gallery. n exhibition of work by Peel artist Nicola Dixon promises to mix the old familiar maritime paintings with a series of works – The Deer’s Cry Nine – inspired by Celtic wisdom and symbols and the works of Manx artist Archibald Knox. Nicola designed a logo – a complex spiralling triskel – for the 2014 Yn

Whilst developing work for this, Nicola became more and more fascinated by the interlinking symbolism of the Celtic triskel and the Three Legs of Man – and it is this work which is now on show in her new exhibition at Galley 42 in Port St Mary.

the hymn, which also inspired Manx artist Archibald Knox.”

“Very simply, the triskel has two components of its symbolism: on the one side, the continual motion, progress and action and on the other, the three protrusions – the legs – representing spirit, mind and body, or even the land, sea and sky,” says Nicola. “The centre is the oneness where everything begins and ends.” And Nicola has gone deeper into Celtic symbolism using three other special Celtic shapes – the circle, spiral and knot – alongside the triskel, placing all four at the core of the exhibition. “The Celts were nature people,” Nicola continues. “The starting point for ‘The Deer’s Cry Nine’ was the ancient Celtic hymn which both celebrates nature and asks for its protection. The triskel paintings are a modern interpretation of just nine lines of

Her new approach, evidenced in ‘The Deer’s Cry Nine’ has run over into her more familiar maritime paintings. Nicola would be the first to admit that this new work has challenged her in many ways, and even her new maritime paintings, with their trademark bright simple lines and colours have become more subtle. The images are more of journeys and dreams – of other things and other places – and although the boat motif (the traditional Peel fishing boat the Manx Nickey) is still there, like Nicola’s work itself, it is moving on.

Knox’s influence on Nicola’s new work is both obvious and subtle. She has studied him for many years, and his lines and colours are there in her own work. But it is her own interpretation of his ideas and the source of his ideas which makes this new exhibition so special.

Nicola Dixon’s exhibition is at Gallery 42, Port St Mary until 1 May.

REMEMBER FLYING AS A CHILD, YOU COULD VISIT THE COCKPIT WITHOUT THE ASSUMPTION OF BEING INGENIOUSLY DISGUISED AS A WALKING DETONATOR?

Deciding on a destination

Then: Before the World Wide Web, we would spend hours perusing brochures and guidebooks at the local travel agents. Now: Access to a plethora of travel blogs, Twitter feeds and Instagram posts – all showcasing the latest travel trending hot spots – allow us to book anything from a budget trip to a luxury escape at the click a button. Simply scour the web for the best deal, punch in your card details and you’re good to go! You can even check-in online.

Back when you could virtually haul a gallon of perfume onboard instead of decanting it into several annoyingly miniscule containers? Or when airport security didn’t involve increasing levels of patience, wardrobe planning and a compulsory pat down? Oh how times have changed… Thankfully, what we’ve lost in innocence, we’ve gained in convenience – uber speedy booking verifications, WiFi in the sky and flamboyant reviews warning against hostile hotels and irate airlines.

HOTELS OF THE FUTURE

It’s no longer enough to stay in a simple bed and breakfast; today’s globetrotters prefer accommodation of the more aspiring variety. From picking your perfect pillow to checking into a room 16 foot below sea level, here are our top five Futuristic Hotels.

THE EVOLUTION OF TRAVEL CONTINUES

Asides from rising baggage fees, fewer on board food offerings and computers in the place of staff – there are an array of advantages to the evolving travel industry. By far the biggest benefit comes from the tech sector – staying in touch with friends and family no longer costs the earth (even if you are on the other side of the world).

Dawang Mountain Resort China

On first glimpse, you’d be forgiven for thinking this metal monstrosity is in fact space ship.

BEAUTY

The Finance Website Mint.com recently reported that the average woman spends nearly £10,000 in total during her lifetime on make-up products. The use of cosmetics has certainly evolved significantly since its early origins; here are some interesting facts researched for you by local professional makeup artist, Charlotte Easton: Both men and women in Ancient Egypt wore lipstick as a symbol of their status and favoured colours such as magenta, blueblack, and orange though red was also a popular shade. Cosmetics are mentioned in the Old Testament - 2 Kings 9:30 where Jezebel painted her eyelids - approximately 840 BC. In the 1400s, women whitened their faces with “ceruse,” which was made from vinegar and powdered lead. Ceruse rapidly ate the skin away, causing the need to apply more than one layer and eventually killing the person.

Words: Charlotte Easton

Queen Elizabeth I was reportedly a huge believer in the healing powers of lipstick, and was said to have had half an inch of lipstick on at the time of her death. 16th century women were said to bleed themselves to achieve a paler skin. In the 17th and 18th century, women dilated their eyes with drops from a plant called Belladonna, as it was considered attractive. Long term use damaged their eyes which led to blindness. The Maybelline Company was created by a 19 year old entrepreneur, Tom Lyle Williams in 1915. Williams noticed his older sister Mabel applying a mixture of

www.charlotteeastonmua.com

46

Vaseline and coal dust to her eyelashes to give them a darker, fuller look. He adapted it with a chemistry set and produced a product sold locally called lash-in-browline. Williams renamed his eye beautifier Maybelline, in honour of his sister Mabel, who gave him the idea. In 1920 Max Factor gave in to his son Frank’s suggestion and officially began referring to his products as “make-up” based on the verb phrase “to make up” (one’s face). Until then the term “cosmetics” had been used; the term “make-up” was considered vulgar, to be used only by people in the theatre or of dubious reputation and not something to be used in polite society. In the 1930s, lash darkeners contained scary ingredients such as turpentine, leadcontaining kohl, and aniline, a hair-dye ingredient, all of which left more than one woman blind. In 1958, Revlon introduced its “Roll-On Mascara” – the first waterproof mascara without turpentine. While all other cosmetics were rationed in Great Britain during WWII, lipstick was kept in production because Winston Churchill felt it boosted morale. Even today, the shimmery shine in some cosmetic products like lipstick and nail polish comes from fish scales.

One thing is for sure, makeup is always evolving and changing! I hope you enjoyed reading these fun facts. ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

They say that fashion is cyclical and, if the SS15 catwalk collections were to be believed, we’ll be spoilt for choice with a variety of vintage-inspired styles this season! Whether you prefer the feminine ‘50s or sporty ‘90s style, there’s a decade for everyone…

The ‘50s

THEN

NOW

The ‘60s

THEN

NOW

The dawning of the age of the miniskirt, the 1960s saw radical changes in fashion thanks to designer Mary Quant, and the influence of figures such as Audrey Hepburn, Twiggy and Brigitte Bardot. Accessories took a back seat as psychedelic prints and monochrome patterns jumped into the spotlight, appearing across short simple shapes androgynous silhouettes. As well as the miniskirt, the shift dress was a signature style for the young mod scene, followed by bright A-line dresses, skirts and coats.

Orla Kiely’s ever retro style was seen once again for SS15, and is the perfect inspiration for modern ‘60s-inspired style. House of Holland was similarly inspired by the decade’s penchant for bright floral patterns, so keep an eye out for shift shapes and MANGO BLOUSE boxy tops adorned with £44.99 bold flowers and block monochrome prints. Keep accessories to a minimum and let the prints speak for themselves, or finish the look with a cute Peter Pan collar à la Twiggy.

TOPSHOP SHIFT DRESS £65

The ‘70s THEN Bohemian style carried over from Woodstock into the ‘70s, with unrestrictive folksy silhouettes remaining hugely popular. Designer Thea Porter championed ethnic styles in Indian-inspired prints, tent dresses and wide trousers, and arty DIY approaches to fashion such as tie-dye, batik, crochet and macramé added to the laidback vibe. Denim was the go-to fabric for everyday wear, whether worn as a pair of flared jeans, embroidered skirt, jacket or hat, but glamorous disco style was also a standout trend. Flamboyant suits in satin, velvet and all-over sequins paired with platform shoes was a fashion favoured by the likes of David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust, Marc Bolan and New York Dolls, while draped jersey dresses, wrap skirts, leotards and dancewear inspired dresses were key looks for women. NOW The high street is awash with ‘70s styles this ASOS SUEDE season, with relaxed denim shirts, flared jeans, CO-ORDS tan suede skirts and fringed accessories offering SKIRT £65 TOP £40 an easy way to embrace the trend, while the likes of Tom Ford and Peter Pilotto gave the disco decade a whirl for SS15. Get your glam rock on and channel the disco suit with bright colours and all-over sequins or, if super sparkly style seems a bit overwhelming, just a hint of sparkly detail on fitted jackets and flared trousers. Don’t forget to finish the look with big platform boots and even bigger hair!

MISS SELFRIDGE FLARED JEANS £38

The ‘90s THEN

Back in the 19th century, a woollen mill on the banks of the River Neb began weaving woollen cloth. Named after the nearby Tynwald Hill, the mill continued to produce traditional Manx tartan until the 1970s, when a change of ownership took the mill in a different direction.

THE GREAT GLUTEN FREE CON HAS FALSELY ASSURED PEOPLE THAT SWAPPING EVERYDAY PRODUCTS FOR GLUTEN-FREE IS A HEALTHY CHOICEBUT THIS IDEOLOGY COULD NOT BE FURTHER THAN THE TRUTH. THESE PRODUCTS ARE DOING NOTHING MORE THAN LEAVING YOUR WALLET LIGHTER AND THE SCALES HEAVIER. With the enviable figures of celebrities on the cover of every glossy magazine admitting to following a low-gluten diet, it is no wonder demand for gluten-free products has dramatically increased in recent years- record growth figures value the industry to be worth more than £0.5bn. James and the Giant Feast HE MAY BE A FAMILIAR FACE ON TV, BUT JAMES MARTIN ISN’T HAPPY ABOUT CHEFS CLOGGING UP AIR TIME. THE CHEF DISHES UP A DOSE OF REALITY, ALONG WITH THREE NEW HOME COMFORTS RECIPES ask the younger ones, well, they just want to be on TV. It’s not about that.” While the statement seems to contradict Martin’s own TV engagements, including Saturday Kitchen and the second series of Home Comforts, filmed at his home and based on his new book of the same name, he insists his career is built on a rocksteady love of food. “The industry is so important to me first, and the TV is secondary,” he adds. “I just so happen to be doing this because I was told I was good at it, and that’s why the phone kept ringing. I’d be quite happy if the filming stopped. I’ll go back to my restaurant.” But it doesn’t sound like the chatty chef is in a rush to leave theb small screen soon. Having taken part in BBC One’s Meet The Street, where he took famous people back to their hometowns to tackle loneliness in their area, he is evangelical about the power of telly. “I just think TV is such a magical thing, as in it can change people’s lives and make you cry, make you happy,” explains Martin, who also hosted BBC One’s Operation Hospital Food, which saw him working to improve meals served up in wards. “It’s an amazing thing, really. The more I do it, the more I enjoy it. I’ve been doing it for 20 years now and it’s just the best job in the world... but then I always want my other job.” And it’s his “other job” - writing recipes (especially ones which cater for people who live “north of Watford” and include ingredients everyone should be able to track down easily), or working at his Manchester restaurant - that really gets him buzzing. “I go back to my kitchen for normality, that’s my day job,” says Martin, who came fourth in the third series of Strictly Come Dancing. But he loves the chance to “dive in and out”, and travel the country meeting foodies for work.

BEER-MARINATED RACK OF PORK WITH JEFF’S CHARD GRATIN (Serves 6) FOR THE PORK: 2tbsp sea salt 2tbsp dark brown sugar 1tsp black peppercorns 4 garlic cloves, lightly crushed 2 bay leaves 2tbsp yellow mustard seeds (1tbsp soaked in water overnight) 4 sprigs of thyme 4 sprigs of flat-leaf parsley 500ml beer, preferably a good ale 1-1.2kg 6-rib pork loin rack, French-trimmed 50g unsalted butter 100g brioche, roughly torn 1tsp English mustard powder 1tbsp brown mustard seeds, soaked in water overnight Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper FOR THE GRATIN: 700g chard, chopped into 2cm pieces 2 large potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-1.5cm chunks 1 onion, sliced 50g unsalted butter 50g plain flour 400ml whole milk 200ml chicken stock 100g gruyere cheese, grated Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Pour 100ml of cold water into a saucepan, add the sea salt and sugar and heat until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the

heat. Now mix in 400ml of cold water, the peppercorns, garlic, bay, unsoaked yellow mustard seeds, thyme, parsley and beer. Put the pork loin into a large bowl or sealable bag then pour in the liquid and cover. Place in the fridge for 24 hours, turning occasionally. When ready to cook, preheat the oven to 200C/400F/gas mark 6. Remove the pork from the bag and pat dry. Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat, then add the butter and heat until foaming. Carefully seal the pork on each side until light golden brown, then transfer to a roasting tray. Roast for 15 minutes. Put the brioche, mustard powder and soaked yellow and brown mustard seeds into a food processor and blitz to a paste, then season. Set aside. Meanwhile, make the gratin: Layer half the chard and potatoes into an ovenproof dish, scatter over the onion, then place the rest of the chard and potatoes on top. Put the butter in a saucepan and melt, then add the flour and cook for a couple of minutes until light golden brown. Add the milk gradually, whisking until you have a smooth white sauce, then whisk in the stock and half the cheese and cook until melted. Season with salt and pepper, then pour the sauce over the chard and potatoes and top with the remaining cheese. After the pork has been cooking for 15 minutes, spread the brioche paste over the top. Decrease the oven temperature to

180C/350F/gas mark 4, then return it to the oven for 45 minutes to crisp the crumb and finish cooking the pork through. Place the gratin in the oven at the same time. Remove the pork from the oven and rest for 15 minutes, while the gratin finishes cooking. Carve the pork and serve with the chard gratin.

FOR THE ROUGH PUFF PASTRY: 250g plain flour, plus more to dust 250g very cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes 1/2tsp salt FOR THE FILLING: 25g unsalted butter 1 banana shallot, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely sliced

2 large skinless boneless chicken breasts, cut into 1cmthick slices 150g mixed mushrooms, such as chanterelle, girolle and chestnut, sliced if necessary 50ml Madeira 150ml chicken stock 2tbsp chopped tarragon leaves 200ml double cream Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 egg yolks, lightly beaten

For the pastry, place the flour in a mound on a clean work surface and make a well in the centre. Place the butter and salt in the well and work them together with the fingertips of one hand, gradually drawing the flour into the centre with the other hand. When the cubes of butter have become small pieces and the dough is grainy, gradually add 125ml of icecold water and mix until it is all incorporated. But don’t overwork the dough; the butter should give a marbled effect to the pastry and not be mixed in fully. Roll the mixture out on a lightly floured surface into a 2.5cm-thick rectangle, wrap in cling film and refrigerate for 20 minutes.

CHICKEN AND WILD MUSHROOM FRYING PAN PIE CONTINUED >

Fold one short side over by one-third, then the other short side on top of it, as though you were folding a business letter. Turn 90-degrees. Roll the block of pastry into a 40x20cm rectangle as before, and fold it into three again. These are the first two turns. Repeat twice more to make four turns in total. Wrap the pastry in cling film and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before using. Meanwhile, make the filling. Heat a large (24cm) ovenproof frying pan until hot,

add the butter and, when it foams, add the shallot and garlic and fry for one minute, then add the chicken and fry until just coloured. Add the mushrooms and fry over a high heat for two or three minutes until just softened, then add the Madeira and set the mixture alight with a match, standing well back. When the flames subside, pour in the stock and bring to a simmer, then add the tarragon and cream and simmer for five minutes. Check the seasoning, then set aside to cool.

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/gas mark 6. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured work surface until it is 5cm wider than the frying pan and 4-5mm thick. Brush the edges of the frying pan with the egg. Lay the pastry over the filling and crimp at the edges. Trim away any excess pastry and brush the top of the pie with the remaining egg. Decorate with any pastry trimmings, if you like. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes, or until the pastry is crisp and golden and the filling is bubbling.

Begin with the passion fruit creme. Put the double cream and 150g of the sugar into a large saucepan. Gently bring to the boil, then remove from the heat. Add the lime juice and 75ml of the passion fruit pulp and whisk to combine. Pour into four large martini glasses and place in the fridge to set for at least two hours. Meanwhile, soak the gelatine leaves in cold water. Put the remaining 100g of caster sugar into a saucepan with 100ml of water, bring to the boil, then squeeze any excess water out of the gelatine, add to the syrup and whisk until completely dissolved. Add the remaining 75ml of passion fruit pulp, then set aside to cool. When it’s cool, pour over the passion fruit creme to cover (this layer only needs to be about 5mm thick). Return to the fridge to set for another hour. Remove from the fridge for 30 minutes before serving. Meanwhile, make the biscotti, Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4 and line a baking tray with baking parchment. Put all the ingredients in a bowl and mix together to a soft, sticky dough. Form it into two long sausages on a lightly floured work surface, place on the baking tray, then bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and leave for 10 minutes to cool and firm up. Using a serrated knife, cut the biscotti on an angle into slices, 1cm thick, then lay them back on to the baking tray (you may well need two trays now).

PASSION FRUIT CREME WITH COCONUT AND CHERRY BISCOTTI (Serves 4) FOR THE PASSION FRUIT CREME:

FOR THE BISCOTTI:

600ml double cream

300g plain flour, plus more to dust

250g caster sugar

250g caster sugar

Juice of 1 lime

100g shelled pistachios

150ml passion fruit pulp (passed through a fine sieve)

60g grated fresh coconut

2 leaves of gelatine

Finely grated zest and juice of 1 unwaxed lemon

Serve the passion fruit creme with the biscotti alongside.

APPETITE NEWS AFTERNOON TEA ANYONE? Julie Blackburn took her chums Hilary Dugdale and Dot Tilbury along to sample the delights of afternoon tea at The Claremont… We may not be Ladies Who Lunch but never let it be said that we don’t appreciate the good things in life. We can do classy – and a long, lingering afternoon tea at the Claremont definitely comes into that category. Tables are laid in Coast restaurant, and the view from the bay windows over Douglas Bay makes a great backdrop to the silver cake stands, tea pots by Georg Jensen and Villeroy and Boch china. Everything, from the table settings to the food, has been chosen with enormous care - the result of nine months of research by general manager Maria Danby. She was once a senior manager at the world-famous Betty’s Tea Rooms in Harrogate so she knows a thing or two about afternoon tea and she’s brought all her knowledge to bear on making this one really special. Everything is designed to encourage you to have a little taste of everything and Hil and Dot and I don’t disappoint. Sandwiches first: white crusty ones with egg mayonnaise, or smoked salmon, little brown ones cut into rounds and filled with goat’s cheese and tomato. There are scones, too, again not too big and you can have jam and clotted cream with these if you want. Then it’s on to the sweet treats: delicate little macarons, flavoured

with vanilla, raspberry and chocolate, a selection of miniature cakes – chocolate, lemon and Victoria sponge. We each make sure we try a taste of all of them, and the chocolate cake and vanilla macarons are voted the best. More decisions – do we choose the Darjeeling or the lemongrass and ginger tea? Or even the tea infused with tiny rosebuds which is almost too beautiful to drink? In the end, Hil and Dot play it safe with Assam Breakfast tea, whilst I let the side down by ordering a glass of lightly chilled Prosecco. (Champagne is also available for a really special occasion.) When asked for an opinion, Hil offers: ‘Gorgeous cakes and the macaroons are to die for - and a glass of bubbles is always a lovely optional addition to a perfect afternoon treat!’ She always knows the right thing to say and, on this occasion, she’s got it spot on!

CONSUMER DEMAND IS ERRING TOWARDS WINES THAT ARE SLIGHTLY LOWER IN ALCOHOL, BUT CLIMATE CHANGE MEANS THAT THE BEST BALANCED WINES CAN BE THOSE THAT ARE HIGHER IN ALCOHOL.

believe that a balanced wine will be the result if they start with ‘balanced grapes’ and that vines nurtured according to phases of the moon ripen earlier and more completely.

ack in the eighties, it was considered unusual and almost an achievement for a wine to reach the heady heights of 13.5% alcohol by volume (abv). It was a condition in Chateauneuf du Pape and several other regions, that a red wine must achieve this abv in order to meet Appellation Controlee regulations. Leaving the grapes until they reached maximum ripeness was sometimes a challenge and not always successful. Gradual climate change over the last two decades means more ‘sunshine hours’. Naturally occurring fruit sugars in grapes that are fermented into alcohol accumulate much faster than the more interesting elements (phenolics) that result in a wine’s flavour, colour and structure. Wines have become stronger in alcohol and extract and some well known wine critics welcomed this, leading to a boost in demand for such strong flavours. This is slowly changing as critics and consumers recognise that wines with 15% abv can often be unbalanced, offering little other than alcohol. There are a number of options available to the winemaker. Some producers pick the grapes earlier, before they are fully ripe, giving wines with lower alcohol, but higher acidity. These can lack flavour because the grapes have not reached phenolic ripeness;

Climate change is set to continue, and sunshine hours will increase, so finding the best solution for their own conditions has to remain high on the list for many a wine producer around the world, as winemaking evolves into a more and more scientific industry.

B

those interesting elements mentioned above have not fully developed. Another more common option is to leave the grapes hanging on the vine to allow the phenolic compounds to catch up and then adding acid and/or subjecting the wine to alcohol reducing techniques. Reverse osmosis is one such technique. In simple terms, this removes the alcohol in part of the wine, which is then mixed with the normal wine. Some growers time their irrigation with precision to help to ripen the grapes fully, but this is often in regions where water is in short supply. More recently, water has been added to the finished wine to dilute it. In Chile, regulations have recently been changed, allowing up to 7% water to be added to wines, but a winemaker over the mountains in Argentina could be jailed for doing the same thing. The more scientific, and possibly those with more available funds, use satellite data to work out the exact angles of sunshine and wind direction in order to ensure their vines are planted in the best way. Some naturally occurring or ‘wild’ yeasts produce less alcohol than the cultured yeasts that are more widely used for commercial wine making. Research is being carried out to develop new ones but this is some way off in the future. Biodynamic methods are considered another option. While many conventional producers are sceptical, some winemakers

Three wines worth trying, that are relatively low in abv but with plenty of flavour are Verdicchio Monte Schiavo at 12% is a deliciously fresh and crisp Italian white wine that gives great value for money at just £7.45. Cape Coral Mourvedre Rose from South Africa at 12.5% has similar characteristics to a Provencal Rose, summer fruit flavours with a hint of white pepper and spice. At £11.45, it is a great wine to enjoy with salads, light meat and vegetable dishes in the summer months. La Paz Merlot from Chile is unusual in that it has an abv of just 12%, yet is packed with black fruit and plum flavours. At £7.25, it punches well above its weight and is perfect for everyday drinking and for enjoying at barbecues when the summer finally arrives!

BUSINESS NEWS PLAN.COM WINS AT MOBILE NEWS AWARDS

WINNER

The team joined over 800 guests at the sold out event last night at the Hilton Park Lane (Thursday 12 March) hosted by top comic Al Murray. Fighting off competition from a number of the UK’s top distributors in the category, plan.com secured one of the top awards of the night in its first year of trading since its launch in 2014. Previous winners have included Carphone Warehouse, Mainline, Avenir and HSC. The Mobile News Awards panel were extremely impressed by plan. com’s intuitive partner portal and unique approach to the industry, described by one judge as “the most innovative and refreshing solution offered from an airtime distributor for a very long time”. “What a fantastic night! To win Best Airtime Distributor of the Year in our first year of trading is just amazing.” said plan.com CEO, Dan Craddock. He continued, “We’re very proud of this achievement and want to thank every single one of our staff and partners including O2 for their support over the past 12 months.” “It’s been an incredible first year and we’re only just getting started! Next week we will continue the celebrations with our first ever partner event, plan.live, in Manchester’s Media City. It’s an exciting time for plan.com and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store!”

ISLE OF MAN ORGANISATIONS SOUGHT TO HOST A 2015 STEP PROJECT

CROWE CLARK WHITEHILL ISSUES CALL TO ACTION WITH UK GAAP SEMINAR

The Department of Economic Development is encouraging Isle of Man organisations to support the 2015 STEP Programme which provides work-based projects for local undergraduates. This year STEP is being sponsored for the first time by Standard Bank. Projects previously undertaken have included a public relations project for PokerStars, collection of launch vehicle data for SES Satellite Leasing Limited and market research relating to the Horse Trams for Douglas Borough Council. This year’s STEP programme was launched with a networking event hosted by Standard Bank which was attended by a number of previous and potential project sponsors. At this, a number of new projects have already been committed to. The closing date for host business applications is 29th May and any local organisation requiring more information should contact either Sam Mylchreest, Development Executive, on 682383 or by email at sam.mylchreest@gov.im or Ian Moncrief-Scott on 664883 or by email at ims@manx. net

Crowe Clark Whitehill has arranged a seminar on the implications and requirements of the new UK GAAP, (Generally Accepted Accounting Practice in the UK). The seminar will be held on Monday May 11th in the Palace Hotel’s Shearwater suite when accountancy professionals will be asked to consider: ‘Are you ready for the new accounting standards?’ Crowe Clark Whitehill director Phaedra Bird said: ‘It is critical that accountants in business and in practice take action now. The transition period for this new disclosure framework began on January 1st 2014 and the revised UK GAAP became effective on January 1st 2015. Professionals should also be aware that these new rules are mandatory and that it may prove difficult to apply the new standards retrospectively. The seminar will run from 3.15 to 6.00pm and refreshments will be provided. Places are free but limited. To book, contact Kimberley Moughtin at Crowe Clark Whitehill. kimberley.moughtin@crowecw.im

FEMALE MILLENNIALS ARE THE MOST CONFIDENT AND AMBITIOUS OF ANY FEMALE GENERATION NEW PWC SURVEY DISPELS MYTHS ABOUT WOMEN AND WORK

• Opportunities for career progression tops the list of most attractive employer traits • 41% of female millennials starting careers believe they can reach the top with their employer • 50% said employers are too male biased when considering internal promotions • 66% surveyed feel that opportunities are not equal for all To mark International Women’s Day (IWD) on Sunday 8th March 2015, PwC surveyed 1,400 female millennials in the UK (women born between 1980-1995) to find out how they feel about the world of work and their career. The report – The female millennial: A new era of talent – reveals that the British female millennial ranks opportunities for career progression as the most attractive employer trait (62%); making her

more career confident and ambitious than previous generations. When it comes to diversity, 83% of British female millennials seek out employers with a strong record on diversity, equality and inclusion – and while they say employers talk about diversity, 66% do not feel opportunities are equal for all. What’s more, 50% of British female millennials believe employers are too male biased when it comes to promoting employees from within – compared to 43% globally, up 14% since 2011. Female millennials in Brazil (76%), India (76%) and Portugal (68%) are the most confident, while their peers in Japan (11%), Kazakhstan (18%) and Germany (19%) are the least confident. Millennial women in Spain (60%), France (58%) and Ireland (56%) view employers in their country as the most male biased, versus Malaysia (16%) and the Philippines (11%) where female millennials are more optimistic. pwc.com/iwd

NEW BRAND FOR BRAND EXPERTS

The Tromode Estate has been alight with music and cocktails recently as new arrivals Ashgrove Marketing celebrated the completion of their contemporary new offices with the surprise launch of its new brand. Headquartered in the Isle of Man since 2007 and with offices in Detroit, Michigan, Ashgrove Marketing is a full service PR, design and digital agency which, for the past 8 years has called central Douglas its home. As the company and its client base has grown, however, so too has its desire for more and better space, resulting in the decision in October 2014 to relocate to warehouse sized premises with a stripped-down, ‘New York loft’ inspired finish. Months in the planning and execution, the open plan office was designed with the help of architect John Wilson of Wilson Consulting and resident Creative Director Leigh Windell, and offers a creative space where attention to detail reigns over every inch. “We wanted to create something completely unique to us”, Leigh explained, “and the best way to accomplish that was by up-cycling and hand-rendering almost every feature. When we first arrived here the office was literally a concrete and steel box, but with the tireless help of Moya, Mannage IT and plenty of Ashgrove friends, we got the essentials in before getting on with what I would consider the fun part. We put together the Ashgrove bar, a dedicated design and craft area, break-out area, stage lighting, chalk board walls, gallery style boardroom – all sorts. Everything has been created using recycled products with hand finished features, and we’ve even hidden our initials throughout. The before and after pictures are amazing to see, and everyone involved deserves a huge thanks.”

BUSINESS NEWS

A PRE-ELECTION BUDGET If the election campaign had not already started, it certainly has now. Mr Osborne’s Budget speech was full of upbeat messages about how well everything is going and how much better they are going to get. In amongst the noise there was an eclectic variety of new and interesting ideas for moving the UK’s tax system forward but these were all aspirational, to be introduced at some point during the next parliament. Measures coming into effect in the next tax year were limited to things we knew already, further tightening the regime to combat tax avoidance, evasion and fraud and a range of unrelated tweaks to the current system designed to appeal to specific demographics – presumably to make sure they know what to do on polling day. One of the things we knew already is the extension of Capital Gains Tax to cover gains made by certain non-residents of the UK on the disposal of UK residential property. This will affect Manx residents with holiday homes or buy-to-let houses and flats in the UK. The change has been presented as making UK CGT consistent with international norms but it doesn’t do that. International norms impose CGT on all gains on all real estate located in the country. By continuing to exempt nonresidents’ gains on commercial property and all gains made by most non-resident collective investment schemes, the UK is foregoing substantial potential tax revenue. Why are they doing this? Another of the things we knew already is the introduction of the new Diverted Profits Tax, a.k.a. the ‘google tax’. It remains to be seen how this will work in practice but it could impact upon some Manx companies doing business in the UK and some UK companies with Manx subsidiaries. The very existence of this tax is rather odd. Only two inferences are possible. The first is that it will be one of the shortest lived taxes ever. The second is that even at this early stage, the UK government has already given up any hope of the BEPS initiative currently being undertaken by the OECD yielding any meaningful results. Probably the biggest new news for Isle of Man businesses was in amongst the measures combatting tax evasion. The UK has unilaterally decided to terminate its Manx Disclosure Facility at the end of 2015, nine months earlier than had been agreed. This is essentially an issue for UK tax evaders, not us here, but IoM based financial institutions will need to be alert to the change and make sure that they communicate effectively with their clients. Time is running out and anyone who wants to make use of the current disclosure facility had better get on with it. It was also announced that an extra three billion pounds or more will be raised from measures to counter tax avoidance and evasion. That’s a lot of money. Whether that will be possible without reversing cuts in HMRC staffing remains to be seen. So, in conclusion, was it a good budget or a bad one for the Isle of Man? We suggest it was a good one. It contained little or no news of serious concern to us here and these days, that’s got to be good.

MM&C TAKES IGAMING MARKETING EXPERTISE TO JERSEY MM&C – the Isle of Man’s leading marketing and communications agency – has opened an office in Jersey to offer its expertise and experience to the Island’s rapidly growing iGaming sector. The Douglas-based company already has an international reputation in iGaming with a client portfolio including 123bet, Betinternet.com, BetStars. com, Racing2day.com, Link2win, Picklive, Sportmarket, and Supervivo. Manx Telecom, a leading hosting provider for global brands such as PokerStars and Paddy Power, is also one of MM&C’s PR and marketing clients. A key member of MM&C Jersey’s team is ebusiness Director Mark McGuinness who has more than 25 years’ experience in the online scene. He has held senior marketing director roles with public and private sector companies and is a well know columnist in key industry publications. Craig Wolstencroft, MM&C Managing Director, commented: “Jersey has a really strong proposition in the iGaming sector with significant advantages over rival jurisdictions. It’s a great place for iGaming entrepreneurs – but iGaming is such a competitive and rapidly developing sector that marketing always plays a crucial role in its success, no matter how great the concept behind the business. While the Isle of Man will always be our home, we see some fantastic opportunities in Jersey which is rapidly becoming recognised as a jurisdiction of choice for iGaming.” www.mmc.je

MANX TELECOM’S ‘A TEAM’ ON A MISSION TO HELP SMES If you have a telecoms problem, and if no one else can help, then maybe you need to call in Manx Telecom’s ‘A Team! The ‘A Team – or Premier Account Team to give them their proper title – has been created specifically for the Island’s SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) market. Team members Jorden Close, Daniel Halligan and Steven Ferrario are there to give advice on all aspects of Manx Telecom’s product portfolio for small and medium sized businesses.

CREECHURCH CAPITAL AT KNOX HOUSE

An evening drinks reception and silent auction held by Creechurch Capital in aid of Manx Cancer Help proved a great success, raising over £11,000 for the charity. Manx Cancer Help patrons James Toseland and Katie Melua were special guests at the event, which took place at Knox House on 26th February. Guests enjoyed drinks and canapés provided by Linda and Sophie at Taste, and were invited to bid on a number of exclusive items in the silent auction, including local dress designer Sarah Hendy ‘s ‘Archibald Knox’ dress, made for the Manx Cancer Help Ball in September 2014. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

The auction raised a fantastic amount for the charity, with a donation from Creechurch Capital bringing the total funds to £11,690. Chairman of Creechurch Capital, Douglas Barrowman, said: ‘We had a great time at this event, and are very pleased that our guests enjoyed themselves too and helped us to raise funds for Manx Cancer Help. This is a hugely worthwhile charity that provides vital services for anyone affected by cancer in the Isle of Man, and one which Creechurch Capital is delighted to support.’

THE AMAZING RISE OF MIDDLE CLASS TATTOOS AS INKING BECOMES RESPECTABLE

T

Nowadays, it seems you’re just as likely to find tattoos adorning the torsos of solicitors, investment bankers, media luvvies and of course celebrities; age it seems is no barrier with the likes of David Dimbleby recently admitting that he had a tattoo at the age of 70. In one poll David Beckham was chosen as the celebrity with the best tattoos while it seems that Cheryl Fernandez-Versini (better known as Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole) has the worst ‘inks’, including the elaborate rose on her derriere! But is the good old British public more accepting of tattoos than they were as little as five years ago? The answer to that seems to be a guarded ‘Yes’ but it might just depend on where you live in the British Isles and what your occupation is. So what is the stance of the Isle of Man?

cott Kelly, 30, a high flier in the financial sector whose work also takes him to European capitals, points out that all 17 of his tattoos can be covered by trousers and a shirt so people only find out about them when he chooses to show them. “I know full

well that people’s attitudes would severely limit my chance of getting those types of jobs with visible tattoos. They don’t call them ‘job stoppers’ for nothing!

“I’ve lost count of the amount of old ladies that have been amazed by how brightly coloured they are.” Scott believes that a small proportion of the population still seem to find the idea of tattooed women abhorrent. “I think every one of my heavily tattooed female friends has heard ‘you’re such a pretty girl, why did you ruin yourself with those things?’ or some such waffle. Although I guess I don’t know many heavily tattooed females in office jobs, for obvious reasons I guess.”

d Oldham, a broadcast journalist with Manx Radio, took the precaution of seeking a thumbs up from his immediate boss before having tattoo ‘sleeves’ covering both arms four years ago. “There was no problem,” says 34-year-old Ed who had his first tattoo, on his back, when he was a teenager. He now has 13, estimates he has £2,500 worth of tattoos on his body and is looking to have more. Known for his eclectic taste in music and presenter of Manx Radio’s popular ‘Saturday Night Live’, the tattoos on his arms feature the likes of Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead, Electric Wizard etc. While baring his arms in the Manx Radio studios isn’t a problem when going out on assignments he invariably makes sure they are covered up.

“I would never go into a courtroom or formal gatherings with bare arms, it’s a matter of maintaining respect, and hands, neck and certainly face are taboo areas for tattoos as far as I’m concerned. Yes, there are still those who are prejudiced and who look on tattoos with disapproval and distaste. It is now, however, a huge market with both men and women choosing not only to have full ‘sleeves’ on both arms but tattoos on other parts of their body.”

S

hauna McCallion, 21, had her first tattoo in her teens, paid for as a birthday present from her mother; she now has 18, and is currently working on the design for number 19. “It’s definitely addictive,” says Shauna. “I was 15 when I first became interested in tattoos but then had to wait until I was a bit older before I could have one done.” Shauna, who has a four-year-old son Joshua, now regularly attends tattoo conventions but her ‘old school traditional’ inkings, are done by a tattooist in London at a cost of £100 an hour. She leaves no one in doubt about her enthusiasm for tattoos as she has one on each hand which, she says aroused so much interest when she went for an interview at NOA Bakehouse in Douglas that she got the job. She now works for Butler’s Choice in the town.

“Some of my tattoos might mean something but otherwise they are more abstract,” she adds. “Tattoos are definitely now more acceptable, even fashionable, and there are models now covered in tattoos.” Asked what her reaction would be to Joshua wanting a tattoo at too early an age her answer is unequivocal. “He will certainly be told to wait until he’s 18 when it’s legal, and maybe even wait until he’s 21. It’s important for anyone who wants one to go to a registered tattooist.” Her comments echo those of 2013 X Factor winner James Arthur who says he regrets having so many inkings, including one on his face which he covers with foundation,, adding in a recent interview: “I say to all kids, don’t have a tattoo until your 21. I have ‘love’ and ‘life’ on my knuckles and I would half like those removed.” ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

David’s profession is in ‘black and grey’ and portrait work and this is reflected in some of the tattoos on his own arms and legs. “Tattoos invariably last longer than a relationship,” is David’s philosophy who adds that he always advises against having a tattoo with the name of girl friend or boy friend as part of it and won’t do tattoos on the face.

Lucky 13 apprentice Damian Morris, 21, has had an interest in tattoos since the age of 10 when living in New Zealand and, despite parental disapproval, had his first tattoo as soon as he was 16, the legal age for a tattoo in New Zealand while it is 18 in the UK and Isle of Man. “Now my Dad back in New Zealand is looking to have one,” says Damian who has a range of tattoos on not just his body but also hands and neck. Darren Hardacre, 41, can boast around £16,000 worth of tattoos.. “Some people

might say it’s an addiction, I say it’s a collection,” says Darren, who is a highways inspector for the Government. “I don’t get them done for other people to look at, I get them done for me and draw my own designs. Yes, there can still be a bit of a stigma in some areas but tattoos are becoming more popular and socially acceptable and you now see people who are retired having them done.”

It was rumoured that Queen Victoria, who had something of a raunchy reputation in her younger years, had a full back piece and In the late 19th century tattoos were favoured by many of the crowned heads of Europe, including Edward V11, and in the 1930s by London’s fashionable glitterati. The perception during much of the 20th century, however, was that they were the hallmark of sailors, prostitutes and the like. Today, not only are they a fashion accessory but an increasingly popular form of 21st century body art for the more discerning of the masses.

ALL THINGS EQUESTRIAN HORSE TREATS MY TOP SPA DAY PRODUCTS

many owners are always on the lookout for superior products to make their horse look amazing - effortlessly.

W

e all love to be pampered now and again whether it’s our hair, nails or makeup and our horses are no exception. I love treating my Monty to a day in the salon and he loves the attention. Naturally I pride myself on having him looking at his best, despite extensive efforts to scupper this by rolling in as much mud as possible! Of course with everyday life as busy as it is, many owners are always on the lookout for superior products to make their horse look amazing - effortlessly. As a result, it isn’t surprising that the equine grooming market has evolved into a multi-million pound business. That said some of my favourite products and the companies behind them have been going for hundreds of years. ‘Carr Day and Martin’ is one of the world’s oldest, founded in 1765 and initially making leather cleaner for men’s shoes, they later branched out into saddle cleaner before creating other equine products.

HERE ARE MY TOP 5 MUST HAVE PRODUCTS TO GET YOUR HORSE CAT-WALK READY:

1

CARR DAY AND MARTIN MANE AND TAIL CONDITIONER SPRAY This keeps the mane and tail sleek, soft and tangle free. Results are instant and last for up 2 weeks.

I’ve tried so many over the years but I haven’t found one that works as well as this. It keeps Monty’s tail silky and stops any knots and dirt getting in. I find it an essential during the winter months however; personally I don’t recommend using it on the mane, this is because it can make your reins somewhat slippy should it get onto them.

2

88

EFFOL HOOF OINTMENT The original Effol Hoof Ointment ensures healthy hoof growth and also acts as a disinfectant. The combination of laurel and thymol plus Vaseline

forms a water-repellent and dirt-repellent film which protects the hoof against outside influences. It also perfect for making hooves look black and shiny, and provides great coverage.

ABSORBINE SHOW SHEEN Pro-vitamins nourish the coat and can help reduce grooming time by as much as 80%. Brushing you horse’s coat is great for stimulating circulation, and done in conjunction with this product will result in a super looking ‘show day’ gleam. It is brilliant for a quick fix and a must for your tack box.

4

WAHL SHOWMAN DIRTY BEASTIE

and contains no harmful detergents or cleansers. The formula includes extracts of Peach, Pear, Passion-Flower and Kiwi Fruit which works to effectively cleanse dirty, thick or matted coats and deodorise. It is powerful, yet gentle, and Dirty Beastie smells so good I would use on my own hair.

5

STUBBEN WOOD BACK JUNIOR SOFT BODY BRUSH

There is now a vast range of fancy brush products available and many of us will have lots of different types for various grooming purposes, but this is my all time fave. You get what you pay for with this. A little more expensive than general brushes, but totally worth it and mine has lasted for years. The natural bristles result in bringing a lovely shine to the coat and it is soft enough to use on their face - Monty loves it! It’s easier to use than some brushes as it has a smaller handle, which is especially good for those with little hands! SO THERE YOU HAVE IT, MY TOP 5 PRODUCTS FOR TRANSFORMING YOUR HORSE FROM MUDDY MESS TO SHINING SUPER STAR!

Path masters smash round Island record!

Manx ultra-running legends Rob Sellors and Ben Scott smashed the record for running the 97-mile Raad ny Foillan coastal path, and raised hundreds of pounds for The Children’s Centre in the process. Starting from Peel on Saturday [March 14] afternoon, they ran through the night to complete the route in 21hrs 54mins – more than three hours faster than the previous record of 25hrs 10mins which was held by Bob Baxter. So, in addition to breaking the record, the Manx duo are also the first runners to beat the 24-hour barrier. They ran an anticlockwise lap of the Island heading south and were joined in the attempt by accomplished ultra runner Richard Hurdle from Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Unfortunately, Richard was struggling with a chest infection and had to stop running at Port St Mary – but, despite feeling under the weather, he helped Ben and Rob’s support crew until the early hours of Sunday morning. If you feel inspired by the record breakers (but don’t feel up to running the full 100mile Raad Ny Foillan on your own!) then you could get a team together to take part in the Race The Sun relay race around the same route but in a clockwise direction on Saturday May 23. Friends Provident International Harbour 2 Harbour Charity Walk

BMX star's clinic right prescription for young Ramsey riders

This year’s Friends Provident International Harbour 2 Harbour Sponsored Walk will take place on Sunday May 10th 2015.

Three-times world BMX champion Shenaze Reade spent a morning at Ramsey’s BMX track on Mooragh Promenade, where she held a clinic for around 30 young BMXers, instructing them on fitness and riding techniques. The 27-year-old also met Ramsey Town Commissioners’ chairman Captain Nigel Malpass who did not put his BMX skills to the test but thanked Ms Reade for devoting time to coaching Ramsey’s aspiring Olympians.

The event, now in its second year, is organised by Southern Community Initiatives and raises money for a number of important local causes, including Southern Befrienders, Men in Sheds, and SPort Erin. A new route will be used, which will

see walkers leave The Bay in Port Erin at 10.30am, heading along St Mary’s Road, up The Howe to Glen Chass before joining the coastal path to Castletown. Get on your bike for Coast To Coast Challenge! If you want a great summer cycling holiday through the Lake District, or just want an incentive to get fit, then The Children’s Centre has the perfect event for you. The Coast To Coast Cycle Challenge is a three-day ride through some spectacular countryside from Whitehaven on the Irish Sea coast to Tynemouth on the North Sea coast. It is one of Britain’s most iconic cycle routes and the ride is ideal for all abilities. The Children’s Centre’s experienced team will provide support throughout the 138-mile cycle which takes place from July 24 to 27. The coast to coast event follows the route designed by Sustrans which opened in 1994, and which is now Britain’s most popular long-distance cycling route. After setting off from Whitehaven, the riders will head through the Lake District, across the Pennines and on towards Tynemouth. The route takes in lakes and pine forests, mountain passes and moorland, and is broken down into daily mileages which are manageable for most riders. Day one will be a ride of around 30 miles to Keswick; day two around 56 miles finishing in Allenheads; and the last day 51 miles to the North Sea coast. The Challenge costs £185 per person, and each participant then has to raise a minimum of £350 in sponsorship. All funds raised go towards The Children’s Centre’s charitable projects Mobex, Out2Play, Child Contact Centre, Thriving Families, EPICentre, Community Development and the Community Farm which all help families and children across the Island. GADGETS

LEGENDS OF GADGETRY THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES CHANGED THE FACE OF BIOLOGY FOR THE WHOLE WORLD IN 1859. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME EVERYONE COULD FINALLY USE SOUND, WRITTEN EVIDENCE TO ARGUE AGAINST THE ALSO WRITTEN, BUT SLIGHTLY LESS SOUND ARGUMENT THAT GOD CREATED ALL. IT ALSO MEANT THAT CHARLES DARWIN BECAME WHAT 90% OF CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 WOULD CALL A “BOSS”. This was a man, a simple geologist who was curious about turtles in the Galapagos, that stumbled upon an idea that made him a legend in eyes of all overenthusiastic, over-angry atheists. This month we want to celebrate the way things grow and, obviously, evolve. Unfortunately, Darwin was slightly behind technologically compared to even 1-month olds today, and his science, although almost hero-ically slapping every creationist in the face, was lacking. Today, with the help of technology that can analyse and cure almost any disease (1 point to Gadgets), we can apply that same theory that told us we came from the apes to shape the changes in gadgets everywhere.

There is a new school of legends now, that follow the path that Darwin set years ago (with their products. We’re all following that path technically). On these pages, I will show to you some of the finest (and, staying true to style worst) gadgets that have changed, evolved and in some cases horribly degenerated over the course of their lifetimes. We couldn’t ignore the big ones here, so this month I’ll be making absolutely no effort to find the positives behind phones, computers, games consoles and, after a lengthy search for a fourth gadget that I remember enough about, vacuums.

APPLE COMPUTERS AND LAPTOPS It has come to my attention that I rarely talk about Apple in a positive light in this section of the magazine. This is because I am usually talking about the iPhone, which I have deep-rooted hatred for that I have neither the time nor the word-limit to explain. However, I am willing to be the bigger man in this conflict that the business giant refuses to acknowledge and admit that, minus that gadgetry stain, Apple do in fact make some fantastic products. Specifically, their computers and laptops. Although Gates may have got there first, his soon-to-be bitter rival Steve Jobs was not long behind. Apple released the Apple I in 1976, and Jobs had no way of knowing what was being started. Perhaps the story of Apple, from typewriter-looking goliath to

Pro essentially redefined both human and gadgetry sexiness, whilst the Air continues to defy not just human belief, but physics itself with its thin design. “However, I am willing to be the bigger man in Whilst the competitors in the market have, this conflict that the business giant refuses to undeniably, come on in acknowledge and admit that, minus that gadgetry stain, Apple do in fact make some fantastic products” metaphorical leaps and bounds, Apple remains distantly ahead of them in terms of design, revolution and may be the best example of technological unfortunately product retail price. But evolution on these pages. Every single new with great power, comes a great ability to generation of Apple computers creates a buzz in technological circles like very charge customers that need to fit in with few other products, but it is the laptops the crowd ludicrous amounts of money. If monetary gain isn’t the point of evolution, that generate the interest that made Steve then what is? Jobs able to look down on Bill Gates and chuckle with a smug grin. The Macbook super-slim, super-fast and super-displaying (meaning it displays in a super fashion, get off my back this is a hard one) Apple Air,

DYSON VACUUM This seemed like a fantastic idea when I found it, and because of that I’ll stick by it, however I am slightly struggling to think of what to write about vacuums. Imagine that, having to write about the evolution of a vacuum. Admittedly yes, Dyson has indeed presented us with a myriad of adverts claiming that they’re revolutionizing vacuum technology and designing new ways for us to experience pushing a ball around a carpeted room comfortably, but what does that tell us? It was in 1974 that James Dyson had the idea of putting

92

a ball in place of wheels on a wheelbarrow, and since then they’ve very much played on that idea repeatedly, finding almost any excuse to show off that it was Dyson himself that discovered the mobility possibilities of the sphere. In all honestly, evolution was the basis of this company, and since its creation there hasn’t been a whole lot of actual evolution in terms of Darwin’s natural selection. Rather, they simply change some of the aesthetics and from time to time offer a smaller model that you can hang on the wall. ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

SONY MOBILES In August of 2001, two mobile phone companies were in dire straits financially, and whilst Nokia was making everyone else in the market whimper with fear, Sony were making small blips on the radar and the only thing falling faster than the sales numbers at Ericsson Mobile Communications were the tears of their investors. It only seemed right that the once great company (which was Ericsson, what happened right?) should merge with Sony, who were happy enough making piles of cash higher than their own factories in other technological circles. And so was born Sony Ericsson, a company that would survive until only 2010, when Sony would fork out $1.4 billion to expand the size of its boots to accommodate their exponentially growing feet. But let us not think of the modern technology wars just yet, and let’s harken back to a time of relatively low competition in the mobile phone network (because is there really competition when there’s a monopoly like Nokia’s?). The first phone from Sony Ericsson was the K750i, followed very shortly by the W800i. Now the K750 was a forgettable piece of gadgetry, but for anyone that was either in school or in any given space during 2005, it has gone

down in myth and legend as “the phone that can play music for 30 hours”. Other than that feat of “genius”, there was really very little about the phone that made it any different to, uncoincidentally, any Nokia on the market. Nowadays, Sony on its own are a massive part of the Sony/Microsoft/Apple/Samsung battle for power. Although the Sony Experia is not the best-selling of the four, it still offers an extremely competitive product, on par with any of the new smartphones. The Experia Z3 is the newest of these models, giving the user everything an iPhone can offer minus the brain-hammering anger that comes with a battery that lasts roughly 2 hours. There have been a lot of iterations between the W800i and the Experia Z3, but it was only post the culling of the Ericsson name that Sony really started becoming a large competitor in the gadget game. In a world where Apple and Samsung are scarily close to becoming large enough to have governmental influence [citation needed], it’s important that there remains some other option, so thank you Sony, for not just ruining the lives of children with war games.

MICROSOFT XBOX This is it. The big one. The Cold War of technology. Microsoft vs Sony. Probably the most clear and abundant example of this competition is shown in the form of the two companies’ games consoles, the Xbox from Microsoft and the Playstation from Sony. What perhaps catagorises the competition between the two consoles best is their evolution, luckily for us. The launch of the Xbox in 2001 introduced a new level of gaming to the market. It was the first console that did not require costly memory cards to store games, boasting its own built-in hard drive, and it also offered Xbox Live, an online service for connection between players and online games for a monthly cost (point for Sony). The secret weapon for Xbox was one certain game, Halo. That name should send shivers down the spine of anyone that has ever touched a console controller, and one that has inspired generations of future game-makers. The Xbox, however, was only the beginning. The new Xbox One is, and this pains me to admit, the height of console technology. With control over everything that can be projected onto a screen, including internet, TV, games, music and pretty much every other form of media. There is a list as long as your arm of the things that you can accomplish with the newest iteration in the Xbox series. Not for the first time, should I suggest an imminent technological apocalypse?

A SIGN OF THE END AS SOME TOWNS IN EUROPE DO AWAY WITH ROAD SIGNS TO MAKE DRIVERS THINK MORE AND SLOW DOWN, WE TAKE A LOOK TO SEE IF THIS BALLSY APPROACH WOULD WORK IN BRITAIN. painted lines on the road to signify which side to drive on.

The British are famed for their love of abiding by the rules, but what if we did away with road signs, traffic lights and parking restrictions? Surely chaos would quickly follow and driving life as we know would disintegrate?

This is because they are so used to seeing them, the signs don’t register consciously and drivers often think the

signs either don’t apply to them or are not relevant.

2015 - 2016 Range Rover Evoque

Audi R8

Wheels and deals

Prices for the new Audi R8 have been announced, with the V10 model a snip at £119,500 - and that’s before options. The outgoing model is eight years old this year and due to retire. The new one brings with it a host of advanced new technologies, from the virtual cockpit seen first in the TT to laser headlights which, Audi promises, won’t be able to cut through cars blocking the R8’s path. To begin with there will be V10 and V10 Plus models, with the latter given performance upgrades spanning the engine, seats and on-board technologies. The Plus will start from £137,500. The V10 will boast 533bhp while the V10 Plus gets a hefty boost to 602bhp. Bucket seats are fitted to the Plus along with the laser headlights, which are optional in the standard V10. More steering wheel controls are added to the Plus to enable quicker control of the noise-increasing exhaust flaps and the ‘Sport’ mode - another standard Plus feature that is optional on the lesser V10. Famously popular with footballers, the new R8 has its share of bling. An LD interior light package illuminates the glass-covered engine compartment and footwells. For your six-figure sum you don’t get Audi’s magnetic ride suspension system or the Bang & Olufsen stereo, and you’re left on mere 19-inch wheels. Audi has confirmed that all buyers of new R8s will receive an Audi Driving Experience at Silverstone circuit, to help them get to grips with the performance potential of their cars. But if £119,500 is a bit rich for you, there are rumours that the V8 model will make a return, slipping back into five figures for those of us on a budget.

Honda At an exclusive event the evening before the Geneva Motor show, Honda unveiled both its new Civic Type-R and production version of the NSX supercar for the first time.

Design

The LG G3 goes bold with its new powerful, high-resolution screen which displays graphics equivalent to those found in high end glossy art books, which LG used as their benchmark of sharpness to aim at. There’s no question about it, whether browsing the internet, looking at photos or watching videos, all appear exceptional on this handset’s screen. What many are already praising about the LG G3 is what is considered the best part of the handset – its minimal exterior. With no buttons, everything uses onscreen keys, including the ‘home’ key. This allows for the 5.5 inch screen to take over and grab your full attention. What’s more is that the G3 certainly also looks the business, bringing a more iconic look of brushed metal and some cool colour options (black, silver and gold) of which the result is a very premium finish.

Software features

Enhancing the user experience further, LG have added a Smart Notice box to give advice on what’s happening around you as well as prompt you with reminders to return calls- ideal for the more forgetful and/or those with hectic lifestyles. As demand for wearable technology continues to surge, the introduction of a built-in fitness tracker- LG Health will prove to be a big hit with fitness fanatics as it’s able to track your steps as well as keeping a record of other activities such as jogging or cycling. The new Smart Keyboard is height-adjustable, allowing you to tweak it to your liking- creating larger keys to type with (or conversely, smaller ones).

New interface

The LG G3 welcomes a brand new interface in the form of a new flat tile look with icons updated and redesigned. Different applications have also been assigned their own colour schemes for easy recognition, with the colour palette much muted and visually appealing.

SPOTLIGHT Ian Thompson: The Next Big – Singer/ Songwriter - Thing?

Celebrity DJ Kay stars at Tahiko re-launch

With a growing number of enthusiastic, and knowledgeable music lovers in his corner, anyone interested in the latest of a growing band of local singer/ songwriters should note the name Ian Thompson and check out the venues he’s playing over the next month or so. Ian has supported a number of visiting musicians, and is now departing from his original ‘cover-heavy’ gigs to showcase his own music. And he’s a busy man. Juggling a part-time security job with family commitments, he is playing somewhere near you every weekend – and sometimes in the week too. But what does Ian Thompson sound like? A little bit folk, with a twang of country, and critics have spotted a touch of Squeeze and a sprinkling of Crowded House. Ian’s self-penned music is the perfect accompaniment to the spring days we hope are just around the corner, mixing gentle harmonies with accomplished guitar playing, and lyrics which ricochet between optimistic love songs and cutting bittersweet disappointment - there’s definitely something there for everyone. His first album – ‘Utopia’ – is now available on iTunes (search Ian Thompson Music) but he’s just released an eight track acoustic CD , ‘Ian Thompson Unplugged’ on local label Small Bear Records ( HYPERLINK "http://www.smallbearrecords.com" www. smallbearrecords.com) . This is expertly produced by Small Bear’s Phil Reynolds and is available from any of Ian’s gigs or can be downloaded from ianthompson.bandcamp.com. And if all that isn’t enough, Ian is currently in the studio working on an acoustic song version of ‘Ebony & Ivory’ with another Island resident, David Castro. This isn’t just a vanity project: Ian and David are planning to make a video to accompany it and sell the track via iTunes or Bandcamp, with all proceeds to go to War Child – a UK charity which helps child victims of warfare by providing sustainable, intensive support to the most marginalised and vulnerable children and young people. Phil Reynolds has provided studio and production time free of charge to help with this excellent project. Ian’s own website www.ianthompsonmusic.com has both audio and lyrics, as well as a full list of where he can be seen playing over the next few months, but for April he can be found, with his guitar, at The Bayview Hotel, Port St Mary (Friday 12th), The Queens, Douglas (Saturday 13th), The Union, Castletown (Friday 19th), The Whitestone, Ballasalla (Saturday 20th), Jaks, Douglas (Friday 26th) and The Manx Arms, Onchan (Saturday 27th). For more information about War Child, visit: www.warchild.org.uk - where, if you can’t wait to buy Ian and David’s cover of ‘Ebony & Ivory’ and are moved by the work the charity does, you can make a donation.

Tahiko manager Ollie Fisher said: ‘The night was a great success and a fantastic way to re-launch Tahiko.
