hristmas traditions run deep in many families, and I’m not saying they are all bad - there are some I absolutely love... These days though, as life gets busier, one tradition I really could do without is pre-Christmas visits. Usually I relish spending time with my friends and family, I live for the last-minute drop in and cherish a mulled wine shared with a good mate; because if life is not built upon the unique relationships we forge with those around us then I seriously wonder what it is all about.

The best place to find a new place in the Isle of Man

That is apart from when it comes to Christmas time. No, I’m not a Christmas Scrooge, I just don’t like to feel pressurised to see every single person I know and care about in the precious few weeks that precede the most stressful day of the year. Why do I need to see them all? Are they all going somewhere, forever? Will the world fall apart if you don’t see all of your cousins before Christmas Day. If these visits must continue I suggest that we bring back the unique Christmas tradition of ‘mummering’, brought about in 19th century England and Ireland. Typically a group of friends or family would visit the homes of their community during the twelve days of Christmas in a fancy dress disguise and take part in a range of informal performances including dance, music, jokes or recitations.

he Christmas season can be a time for thought and reflection, for taking stock of life and being thankful for the many blessings that the year has brought us. This must be great for all the happy festive elves, but in my case the changing of the seasons has quite the opposite effect.

#2: be a professional teenager This is a subset of #1, but such a low effort way to make money that it stands out in its own. Say what you will about people who get famous for singing badly or making awful comedy, at least there is some pretence of effort that goes into what they do. What is far weirder is that there are teenagers in the world today who have managed to become millionaires solely by uploading videos of things that teenagers would normally do: playing video games,

having stupid opinions about music and obsessing about their appearance. As their audience is other teenagers, presumably surrounded by people doing the same stuff, the young YouTube millionaires are in the position of somebody who has got rich by standing at the beach selling people bags of damp sand. It’s genius, or at least it is until you try to watch a video with six million likes called “Ten Reasons Why Mum Should Leave My Room Alone”, and your brain turns into custard and dribbles out of your nose. The only downside to this approach is that I’d need enough money for three facelifts first.

#1: become an online celebrity The all-consuming nature of a 24/7 internet connection means that people now expect to be electronically stimulated the entire time they are awake, and so the web is hungry for the slimmest morsel of content that can be squeezed into the gap between games of Candy Crush and pictures of Kim Kardashian’s arse. Dream big and you yourself could be that morsel, and a lack of talent is no barrier. In today’s brave new world, you can become a global celebrity simply by virtue of having a funny dance, falling into a pond, or being an annoyedlooking cat. It’s incredible, because in the early days of the internet the only way to achieve fame was by charging money to take off your clothes. Now, you take off your clothes for free and hope that this enables you to “monetise your personal brand” into a sponsorship deal with a hip new startup

#3: receive money from an impoverished African nation We all live in an international finance centre, so the odds are that sooner or later one of those plaintive emails sent from “Moses Attenborough, Your Friend And Former Finance Minister of Nigeria (Africa)” will turn out to be a genuine offer to supply us with a cut of some noquestions-asked US dollars. I firmly believe this to be true, so often spend my weekends replying to any such emails I receive in my Man net inbox. I’ve yet to receive any actual cash, but have a steady supply of witch doctor curses, Thai Rolex watches and many charming pen-friends in downtown Lagos. #4: do business on the “dark internet” The a e s recently carried a terrifying story about “the dark web” illustrated with a

#5: Make Thousands Each Week like This Stay At Home Mom The ultimate get-rich-quick scheme, which is so cleverly designed that nobody can tell you precisely what it is that Stay At Home Mom does in order to make her undoubted millions. We are aware that doctors hate her, but also that she knows how to lose belly fat, and look twenty years younger, all without paying income tax. Unlike most people who got rich online, Stay At Home Mom shuns the limelight, so she has never delivered a pretentious TED talk or chaired a panel at SxSW. Perhaps she is worried that the dermatologists would seize the opportunity to strike? Instead, she prefers to concentrate her attentions in reaching out daily to every person who uses the internet without an adblocker, offering the endless and tempting promise of free millions for us all. I really want to have faith and click on one of her ads, but I tried once and something went horribly wrong - instead of being directly connected to Stay At Home Mom I found I’d signed up to give all my money to Tom Cruise in exchange for some wacky religious pamphlets about space monsters. Dermatologists hate him!

In the early 1990s a ‘cool’ young lover would have got away with a mere £2,000 to cover the cost of The Twelve Days of Christmas extravaganza – although this would have been seen as love at bargain basement level – with the more ambitious and frivolous perhaps paying out at least double at the luxury end of the market.

It was an era when the first of The 12 Days of Christmas would end in a relatively modest outlay for a partridge from a friendly gamekeeper and perhaps £10 for the pear tree from the local garden centre. Inflation over the last two decades has put paid to all that. A brace of partridges, if available and not frozen that is, would cost around £6 from the local butcher while the pear tree more like £25. So what about the fifth day and a visit to the jeweller’s for five gold rings? A warning, any request to see five gold rings at prices of up to £1500 each in these raid-ridden times could prompt the pressing of the alarm button. As for six geese a’laying, the once traditional Christmas roast, will need an outlay of around £280 compared with £120 some 20 years ago. Swans, now a protected bird, would be a no-go area on the seventh day so seven swans a-swimming might, just to impress, be a commissioned water colour at say £550. Eight maids a-milking, who once upon a time would have gladly milked in the hope of catching the young master’s eye, have long since been overtaken by hi-tech mechanised milking parlours. Even supposing our romeo can find eight young wenches, sorry ladies, aged between 18 and 20 willing and able to squeeze a cow’s udders, not to mention wearing an appropriate costume, then each would expect to be paid at least the Minimum Wage of £6.40 per hour.

he US-based company will display its newly uprated Venom at the Specialist Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas. Power for the Venom GT Spyder comes from a twin-turbo 7.0-litre V8 engine that now runs on E85 biofuel. Using the biofuel helps boost the power by 207hp compared to the previous model as this fuel burns more efficiently. As well as being the most powerful road car, beating a Bugatti Veyron by 450hp, the Hennessey car is also claimed to be the quickest. The company says it will cover

0-60mph in 2.4 seconds and reach a top speed of more than 280mph. The Venom GT Spyder is based on the chassis of a Lotus Elise and weighs 1244kg, which gives the Hennessey the best power to weight ratio of any road car too. The company only plan to produce a handful of Venom GT’s in 2016 as they are also preparing the next evolution, the Venom F5. They plan to demonstrate the improved power and performance both in terms of straight line acceleration as well as road course handling and lap time performance.

he 1973 Range Rover is one of the very earliest “Suffix B” models, highly sought after now by collectors. This Range Rover was turned into a convertible by Special Vehicle Conversions in the late 1980s. It’s only covered 62,500 miles from new and has been the subject of a sensitive restoration. After being converted into a soft-top, the two-door Range Rover led an eventful life and was won by one of its owners in a game of cards. However, this owner didn’t have sufficient space in his garage and put the car into storage where it lay until the current owner heard about it and managed to buy the car in 2014. The coming of cold, darkness and Christmas music transforms me from the sunbathing layabout of the summer months into a bitter, resentful creature of winter. Instead of being grateful for my loved ones and all the Maltesers they will bring me, I fixate on the awfulness of British weather and how much I would like to be freed from the economic requirement to leave the house until Spring. Based on my personality, I am destined to be part of the idle ruling class, and the only things standing between me and an allcaviar diet are a lack of rich parents or any particular talent. Most people would look at their bank account, suck it up and resign themselves to working for a living. They would take a week off in December to dull their brains with mince pies and Wallace & Gromit reruns, and accept this as fair reward for a lifetime of toil. Unfortunately, I am allergic to hard work and tired of The Wrong Trousers, so instead of scouring the internet for thoughtful presents I spend the winter months searching for new ways to make big money with minimum effort. The power of technology means we live in a golden age of get rich quick schemes, so sooner or later I must be guaranteed to strike gold. Come the day I find that One Weird Trick to Make Million$ From Home, your present will be in the post. Until then, why not have a try at some of these yourself? #1: become an online celebrity The all-consuming nature of a 24/7 internet connection means that people now expect to be electronically stimulated the entire time they are awake, and so the web is hungry for the slimmest morsel of content that can be squeezed into the gap between games of Candy Crush and pictures of Kim Kardashian’s arse. Dream big and you yourself could be that morsel, and a lack of talent is no barrier. In today’s brave new world, you can become a global celebrity simply by virtue of having a funny dance, falling into a pond, or being an annoyedlooking cat. It’s incredible, because in the early days of the internet the only way to achieve fame was by charging money to take off your clothes. Now, you take off your clothes for free and hope that this enables you to “monetise your personal brand” into a sponsorship deal with a hip new startup

that bills itself as “Uber for dogs”, whatever that means. If a pool of talking hairgel like Dapper Laughs can spin a series of 7 second videos about sexual harassment into minor celebrity then the sky’s the limit. #2: be a professional teenager This is a subset of #1, but such a low effort way to make money that it stands out in its own. Say what you will about people who get famous for singing badly or making awful comedy, at least there is some pretence of effort that goes into what they do. What is far weirder is that there are teenagers in the world today who have managed to become millionaires solely by uploading videos of things that teenagers would normally do: playing video games,

It’s genius, or at least it is until you try to watch a video with six million likes called “Ten Reasons Why Mum Should Leave My Room Alone”, and your brain turns into custard and dribbles out of your nose. The only downside to this approach is that I’d need enough money for three facelifts first. #3: receive money from an impoverished African nation We all live in an international finance centre, so the odds are that sooner or later one of those plaintive emails sent from “Moses Attenborough, Your Friend And Former Finance Minister of Nigeria (Africa)” will turn out to be a genuine offer to supply us with a cut of some noquestions-asked US dollars. I firmly believe this to be true, so often spend my weekends replying to any such emails I receive in my Man net inbox. I’ve yet to receive any actual cash, but have a steady supply of witch doctor curses, Thai Rolex watches and many charming pen-friends in downtown Lagos. #4: do business on the “dark internet” The a e s recently carried a terrifying story about “the dark web” illustrated with a

We are aware that doctors hate her, but also that she knows how to lose belly fat, and look twenty years younger, all without paying income tax. Unlike most people who got rich online, Stay At Home Mom shuns the limelight, so she has never delivered a pretentious TED talk or chaired a panel at SxSW. Perhaps she is worried that the dermatologists would seize the opportunity to strike? Instead, she prefers to concentrate her attentions in reaching out daily to every person who uses the internet without an adblocker, offering the endless and tempting promise of free millions for us all. I really want to have faith and click on one of her ads, but I tried once and something went horribly wrong - instead of being directly connected to Stay At Home Mom I found I’d signed up to give all my money to Tom Cruise in exchange for some wacky religious pamphlets about space monsters. Dermatologists hate him!

Rod & Stewart Rod and Stewart needed new names because they were abandoned – you may remember their pictures were in the newspaper when they were found, tied up tightly with bailing twine, at Port Soderick. Stewart (the handsome Lurcher on the left) has a ‘Rod Stewart’ hairstyle, although as far as we know he doesn’t have any musical talent! He is about six years old, and very happy with people and with other dogs. Rod, the equally handsome brindle and white Lurcher, is also an affectionate and sociable dog. He is about four years old. Although they like each other, they would soon settle down in separate homes and I can live with dogs and older children. Are they the ones for you?

Wilf is a stunning ten year old Weimeraner, whose previous family is now too busy with young children to give him all the time he needs to be happy. He is a real ‘gentleman’ – very gentle and responsive. He gets on with other dogs, and is not altogether sure about cats but he will get used to them. According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female deer (Rangifer tarandus) grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer, every single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl. We should have known... only women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a fictional male reindeer with a glowing red nose, popularly known as “Santa’s Ninth Reindeer.” When depicted, he is the lead reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. The luminosity of his nose is so great that it illuminates the team’s path through inclement winter weather.

Reindeer facts

Reindeer and caribou are the same thing. Historically, the European/Asian reindeer and American Caribou were considered to be different species, but they are actually one and the same. There are two major groups of reindeer, the tundra and the woodland, which are divided according to the type of region the animal lives in, not their global location. The animals are further divided into subspecies, ranging from nine to thirteen depending on who is doing the classification. At least one subspecies, the Arctic Reindeer, is already extinct. Santa’s reindeer are most likely the R.t. platyrhynchus subspecies from the Svalbard islands off Norway. We know that because Clement C. Moore’s poem, “A Visit from Saint Nicholas,” which first introduced the world to Santa’s reindeer, describes them as tiny. The only reindeer that could really be considered tiny are the Svalbard subspecies, which weigh about half as much as the average reindeer species and are at least a foot shorter in length—that definitely proves useful when landing on roofs. Strangely, you’ll almost never see these guys in depictions of Santa, as live-action films usually use full-sized reindeer and animations usually draw the creatures as a cross between a regular deer and a reindeer.

ANNEXIO What is the main advantage for your players of using the Isle of Man vs other jurisdictions? We see an Isle of Man licence as the perfect tool that combines customer protection and an excellent standard of regulation. From a player perspective, one of the key strengths of the Isle of Man is its approach to player protection. In practice this means that player funds are secure and that any deposits, bonuses and winnings made by or owing to players, are legally protected. Player protection is not just good practice, but also a sure winner when it comes to promoting the Island’s regulatory position to potential business partners. The Gambling Supervision Commission (GSC) regulatory framework stipulates conditions for protecting player funds, that operators must adhere to in order to obtain an Isle of Man licence. The three mechanisms approved by the GSC to keep players’ deposits separate from operators are a bank guarantee agreed between the bank and the operator so that the bank will pay the player in the event that the operator cannot, a trust fund, where a sum equivalent to players’ funds is held in the event that the operator cannot pay out, or the opening of a client account that meets the Treasury Department’s criteria. As cases over recent years have demonstrated, the fragility of player trust must never be underestimated, and as such, we welcome the Isle of Man’s attitude to player protection and its commitment to work alongside operators to ensure that activity is conducted in a transparent manner.

CHRYSTALS What are your predictions for the housing market in 2016?

As we reach the end of the year the perennial question of how the housing market will perform next year raises its head! In the absence of a crystal ball, we looked at what has happened this year and consider factors which may influence the Manx economy, the property market and our general prosperity. 2015 saw continual readjustment in prices with serious sellers focussing on price reductions. It seems population growth has receded and we have principally been dealing with local buyers, tempting some out of rental accommodation, enabling roots to be put down. The majority of sales have been on turn-key property below £350,000, with Chrystals having negotiated a raft of sales on 2 bedroom purpose built units. These sales have principally been to new residents looking for a lock up and leave but also to locals, looking for investment property. The middle market remains sluggish as the appetite for increasing mortgage borrowing has limited the number of buyers. There has been increased activity from cash buyers on property circa £1M and Chrystals have secured an increasing number of property deals in excess of this level, particularly with acreage. The push for land, privacy and lifestyle is a recurring theme that we expect to see continue. 2016 heralds promise and as the UK property market improves, there is likely to be some upswing. We have some impressive new instructions soon to be launched and look forward to welcoming new residents who wish to make the Isle of Man home.

In today’s world people expect to be able to research and purchase products online, and insurance is no exception. The rise of price comparison sites encourages consumers to buy their insurance quickly; usually without consulting the terms and conditions or drawing on the expertise of a local broker. The advantages of purchasing insurance online are well known. You can buy it at the click of a button in the comfort of your own home and at a time that is convenient to you. It’s also possible to find a cheaper quote online. However price is not the only thing you should consider when purchasing insurance online. If the company doesn’t have an office locally then it can cause problems if you ever need to contact them. Many online insurance companies do not employ claims teams, which can leave clients in the dark if something goes wrong. In the event of a claim it’s an advantage to have local broker who will be able to assist you in finding a good repairer or supplier. They can also help you with any queries about the policy or claims process. Buying insurance online is convenient and is something that should be embraced. However, don’t always rely on price comparison sites alone to inform your purchasing decisions. Get a quote from your local broker and then weigh up what’s important to you. HARDING LEWIS With gaming now apparently the Island’s largest sector, can we count on it to keep on growing?

It was widely reported in September that gaming overtook insurance as the Island’s single largest contributor to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the most common measure of a country’s economic health. This was in the context of an overall strong year of growth for the Manx economy. Will this growth in gaming continue? Well, nothing is certain except death and taxes, but the indications are that yes, it probably will. If you are considering a career in the sector, for example, the prospects remain good and investment in IT and coding skills would be a good move. One of the reasons it can be expected to grow is that there are still a number of subsectors in gaming that are attracting a lot of new investment and interest. Two good examples are fantasy sport leagues and ‘eSports’ (video game competitions), which have dominated industry talk recently on a global scale. These provide likely growth avenues, and the Isle of Man remains well positioned to benefit from growth in the global industry thanks to the work of the DED, the GSC, and the Manx private sector. The growth of the next few years may look different to what we are used to, though. Primarily, we are less likely to see new ‘operators’ (the ones that actually sell gaming products) popping up and more likely to see growth in the software development side of the industry, where it is easier to start up and disrupt the market with innovation.

Local inflation has dropped to negative, what does this mean?

The good: In the short term this may appear good news for the local consumer. Lower fuel and other commodity prices can mean more money in the pocket for the average person. However, the only time deflation can work for the longer term without hurting the rest of the economy is when businesses are able to cut the costs of production in order to lower prices, such as with technology. The cost of technology products has decreased over the years, but it is because the cost of producing that technology has decreased, not because of decreased demand. The bad and the ugly: Negative inflation or deflation can ultimately have a detrimental effect on the economy as ultimately it can mean falling wealth. Some deflation can be caused by the supply of goods (e.g. fuel) being in excess of its demand. In order to sell all their goods the supplier has to reduce the price to increase demand. This type of deflation is often caused by a decrease in consumer spending. While it may seem like lower prices are good, deflation can ripple through the economy, such as when it causes high unemployment, and can turn a bad situation, such as a recession, into a worse situation, such as a depression. Summary: Deflation caused by better use of technology can be good, however deflation caused by lower consumer spending can be harmful and it remains to be seen what the longer term impact will be.

UTOPIA Looking back on 2015 what are your major business regrets or successes? I am a positive person by nature and always make considered business decisions; I never have space in my life for regrets because we have choice that’s what we work for! Sometimes our selection process is influenced by things that are out of our control. How you deal with these daily curve balls identify you as a person. We have had some fantastic successes this year with the expansion of our Walpole ave. salon and the acquisition of commercial property at Port Jack which we are currently working on. This has been a major project. PURITE on the bay & UTOPIA the clinic will open February 2016. Castlemona salon has had major work on the front. New flood barriers are now in place for the winter high tides and a new phone system that connects all the salons both audio and visual. Our Academy now has 13 students all at different stages of training and we will keep offering them the opportunities that are available not only on island but across the globe. Our junior styling team have had great success this year with some really talented kids coming through the ranks … very proud of them !! So all in all I have no regrets, some ideas didn’t quite work out, but we have had a great year …. Here’s to 2016 and the continued expansion of UTOPIA & PURITE. THE ISLE OF MAN’S EVERYDAY ‘SUPERSTARS’ WERE IN THE SPOTLIGHT ON NOVEMBER 14 AS THE HEROES IN THE COMMUNITY AWARDS RETURNED TO THE EMPRESS HOTEL IN DOUGLAS. Along with honouring Island residents who do extraordinary things for the local community or who have overcome great adversity, the event also raised a massive £30,000 for the Manx Radio Dream Catcher charity. Dream Catcher chairman Michael Lees said: “Sometimes it is the people who are least celebrated who make such a difference to the people around them. We are delighted to have shown them the recognition they truly deserve with such a sparkling and emotional gala!” This year’s ceremony had a black and gold Oscars theme with winners, their guests and members of the local business community treated to a glamorous evening fit for Hollywood. Entertainment came from local superstar songstress Coral Amphlett and Heroes-favourites The Soul Suspects made a welcome return to the stage to finish the evening off in style! Dream Catcher will use funds raised to donate gifts such as specialist equipment to disabled islanders and building material to other local organisations and charities.

Local events company, PSS Events were the instigators behind the first ever ‘white collar’ boxing night held recently at the Villa Marina, Douglas.

Local charity, Hospice Isle of Man, are delighted to announce that £11,000 profit has been raised through their annual dinner held recently at Tynwald Mills marquee in St John’s. With 85p of every pound spent directly on patient care – this huge donation will cover 37 days in the In-patient unit at Hospice.

Manx Cancer Help’s Indian Summerthemed ball has raised £34,000.

Over 1,500 people attended a terrific night of entertainment with 16 different fights between, both ladies and men, representing a variety of organisations – such as Sure vs Manx Telecom, Douglas vs Ramsey, a golden handbag bout, Braveheart Clash of the Clans, Chris Mayers vs Warren Spencer and the main event Scott Caldwell vs Rob Henwood. Money is still being donated but it is hoped that nearly £20,000 will have been raised for the charities. All costs were covered by PSS Events.

The wonderful event sponsored by Duncan Lawrie Private Banking saw the marquee turn into a Winter wonderland – a real Snow ball! Event coordinator for the evening was Sarah Radcliffe supported by the fundraising team at Hospice.

CELTON MANX INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR RECOGNITION 2016 Aimed at local charities and not-for-profit organsations with limited resources for promoting and developing their services, the scheme was launched in January 2015 when it attracted more than 150 applications.

The official Pudsey Bear was in the Isle of Man for the first time last week to meet islanders and help raise money for BBC Children in Need.

Sponsored for the second year in succession by Celton Manx the event was held at Barbara and Stuart Clague’s Ballanette Estate in Baldrine with the charity’s joint patrons Katie Melua and James Toseland as guests of honour.

80-year-old fundraiser Bob Leith swam 80 lengths of the NSC pool to raise £1,525 for the Isle of Man Live At Home Schemes. Bob, from Laxey, chose to raise funds for Live At Home because he says it’s a local charity which does a does a great job. He added: “Both my wife and I are involved with the Laxey and Lonan schemes and have benefited from the support they offer. It was also very much a personal challenge to swim 80 lengths of the NSC to commemorate my 80th year.”

Pudsey had a packed schedule for his trip which included visits to Nobles Hospital Children’s Ward, Scoill Vallajeelt, The Children’s Centre, Rebecca House, Onchan School, Ashley Hill School and the Barclays branch in Douglas.

Bob suffered a cracked rib during the challenge on October 16 but battled on and completed the 2,000 metre swim in just under two hours. Bob is also a committee member of the Laxey and Lonan Live At Home Scheme.

Barclays staff in the Isle of Man took part in a number of fundraising activities including dressing up as their childhood heroes, a teddy bears picnic, a superhero quiz and Pudsey bingo raising £5,000 for Children in Need which was matched pound for pound by Barclays to make a total donation of £10,000.

Pudsey attended school assemblies and had his photos taken with lots of the children. He also competed with Stuart Nelson from Barclays in a static cycling race in the Barclays Victoria Street branch.

ISLE OF MAN BREAST CARE’S FASHION FOR LIFE SHOW

Isle of Man Breast Care’s Fashion For Life Show once again proved to be an emotional yet incredibly fun evening which raised vital funds for the charity. The show, which this year was being sponsored by Lasenby Knox and supported by M&S and Shoprite, was at the Villa Marina on Friday October 23 and compered by Dot Tilbury MBE and Geoff Corkish MBE MLC. This year marked the 10th anniversary for the event which is held every two years and features a mix of music and dance as breast cancer patients and survivors model a range of current season must have clothes and accessories from M&S. Sharon Maddrell, Chair of Isle of Man Breast Care, thanked Lasenby Knox, M&S, Shoprite and other local companies for supporting the

event, and the audience of 1,000 who attended the evening and made it a night to remember. This year’s show raised £18,085 for the charity with £4,850 raised from raffle money alone which takes the total that the event has raised since 2005 to more than £78,000. On the 12th November, eighty people gathered in Douglas to celebrate the fifth birthday of the Island’s leading boutique wealth manager, Creechurch Capital.

MANX BREAST CANCER SUPPORT GROUP 2ND ANNIVERSARY BALL

On Saturday 31st October the Manx Breast Cancer Support Group held their 2nd Anniversary Ball at the Best Western Palace Hotel and Casino. The Manx Breast Cancer Support Group started fundraising in November 2013 to build a Dedicated Breast / Screening Unit at Nobles Hospital. They have to date raised over ÂŁ1.6m enough to complete the build.

They now continue to fundraise to equip the Unit to the highest possible standard. Present where Charity Patron Sheila Dean Global CEO Equiom, President Mr David Gawne MBE. Mr & Mrs Howard Quayle MHK, and over 160 guests. The Unit is expected to open Jan 2016.

DOUGLAS ROTARY CLUB FUND RAISING NIGHT

Shaken but not stirred! This was the resolute cool, calm and collected stance taken by members of Douglas Rotary Club and guests at a James Bond themed charity fund-raising event. Members and their guests travelled Orient Express style during which a four course dinner was served on the train as it travelled from Douglas then on to Zagreb, Sofia and Istanbul, stopping in Castletown where Heron & Brearley provided Prosecco, and then speedily returned to Douglas. “It was a night to remember and Mr Bond, while elsewhere on the night in his starring role with Her Majesty’s Secret Service, was definitely with us in style and spirit,” said Douglas Rotary Club spokesman Rotarian Gareth Hooson-Owen.

He added: “The night raised £1200 for the Rotary Foundation which is an international charity with a worldwide focus which includes the eradication of polio, tackling illiteracy and malnutrition in Third World countries. “The event was a ‘first’ for Douglas Rotary Club and was organised by its Foundation Committee with great support on the night from Steve Quirke, chef patron at the Tickethall who organised the meal on the train. It was a great night with everybody dressed in the best possible taste as part of the James Bond theme.” Mr Hooson-Owen said support for the night had also come from Hamblin Recruitment Consultants, MBL, Black Grace Cowley and Home Strategic. CRAFT IS ART “TRUE CRAFT IS AN OCCUPATION OR TRADE REQUIRING MANUAL DEXTERITY OR ARTISTIC SKILL” AND LOCAL POTTER KATHRYN MITCHELL IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS. Katy – as she’s known to her friends - grew up in the Isle of Man but at 18 did what many Island teenagers do – left, vowing never to return. Five years in Australia, studying, working and – eventually – exhibiting and selling her ceramics, came to an abrupt end in early 2013 when, as she diplomatically puts it, she ran out of visa options and had to come home. Nearly three years later Katy runs her own studio in Kirk Michael full time, producing unique hand-crafted items for a variety of local outlets and is exhibiting work around the UK. She specialises in wheel-thrown, hand-painted tableware – simple pieces (all dishwasher safe) intended for everyday use.

“I KNOW I’M NOT ALONE IN FINDING BEAUTIFUL ITEMS COMFORTING AND REASSURING,” SAYS KATY, “AND I LOVE THE THOUGHT OF SOMEONE WRAPPING THEIR HANDS AROUND A WARMING CUP OF TEA IN ONE OF MY MUGS.” Katy began her career as a teenager when she stumbled into a weekend job at Craftworks Studio in Silverdale, where she hand painted items that had been bought in. “I was often asked if I’d made the items, and after saying ‘no’ enough times I realised that I wanted to learn how to make from scratch. I probably didn’t have to go quite as far as the Gold Coast to do it, but artistically it was a very good move!” There she studied for the equivalent of an

Art Foundation course with practicing artist Michaela Kloeckner and then worked and exhibited at the 19KAREN Contemporary Artspace where Katy began selling her work. “The growing creative buzz on the Gold Coast was so exciting and inspiring,” Katy continues, “but I also learnt business and curating skills which have come in very useful now I’m back here running my own studio.” As the tourist industry in the Isle of Man becomes more ‘niche’ and less ‘bucket and spade’ Katy has discovered that her unique selling point – locally made, high quality, tastefully designed items, incorporating Manx iconography and Manx Gaelic phrases - has meant her work is not only

attractive to residents, but has become a firm favourite with visitors. This summer Katy went back to Australia for a few months, including a two week residency in a gallery in Fremantle, Western Australia, and to be part of ‘The Cup Collaboration’ where potters from all over the world were paired together to

make cups and then have them painted and illustrated by their partner. “That was really interesting,” she says. “I was paired with Niharika Hukku, who works in an entirely new clay to me, Clayworks Cool Ice porcelain, which, like Niharika, who I first met three years ago, was a dream to work with. Although her style is very different to mine, the collaboration really worked – my illustrations looked great on her pots and vice versa. I came home really inspired and excited to get back into my own studio.” Although Katy hasn’t completely shrugged off her old designs she has added new ones, with wrens, hares and the wallabies which are native to Australia and nearly-native now here in the Isle of Man. “I don’t think anyone will be able to say I’ve ignored my Manx roots with these new designs,” she BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

laughs. “I take time out every day to walk in the glens and around Kirk Michael and am really inspired by my surroundings, the wildlife and local birds.” So what’s next for Katy? As her work becomes more and more popular, she’s having to work harder and harder to produce the number of pots her stockists demand. “It’s a happy place to be in, and I can’t thank the Isle of Man Arts Council and the Small Business Start-up Scheme enough for their advice and help over the years which has meant I can now work as a full-time potter,” says Katy. “If you’d told me at 18 that I’d come back to the Island, be happy and settled I’d have laughed but the support I’ve had for my work, and the reaction to it from

both the Manx public and tourists, has been quite astonishing and very rewarding. I love my job!” Katy’s work can be found in the Manx Museum and House of Mannann shops and other MNH outlets, the Manx Wildlife Trust shop, every weekend until Christmas at ‘Christmas in the Loft’ at Tholt-y-Will (above the Wheat Free Patisserie) and direct from her Kirk Michael Studio. Off-Island stockists include the Cambridge Contemporary Crafts exhibition and at MAKE 2015 at The Devon Guild of Craftsmen in Bovey Tracey.

WHAT MAKES A HERO? A TOURING EXHIBITION FROM YORK IS LANDING IN THE ISLE OF MAN IN DECEMBER TELLING THE STORY OF NINE LEGENDARY VIKINGS – WHO HAD THE TITLES TO PROVE IT. Manx National Heritage is continuing its partnership with York Archaeological Trust with an exciting exhibition on Vikings called Heroes. The exhibition opens at the Manx Museum in Douglas on Sunday 6th December until Easter 2016. Heroes explores the stories of some of the most famous and influential Vikings, including Godred Crovan, one of the most powerful Viking kings of Man and the Isles, alongside the archaeological evidence that tells their story. The exhibition defines Godred Crovan as ‘legendary ruler.’ Also known as King Orry, he made three attempts to capture the Isle of Man and bring it under his rule. When he finally did, Godred went on to reign for 16 years. A wise and powerful ruler, he extended his power beyond the Island, subduing Dublin and the east coast of Ireland, and so dominating the Irish Sea.

The exhibition features the stories of eight other ‘celebrities’ of the Viking world including the wonderfully-named warrior and campaigner Eric Bloodaxe, King Cnut the Great, adventurer Harald Bluetooth and explorer Leif the Lucky, and some famous Viking women including Aud the Deep-minded. The exhibition will help uncover the Viking idea of a hero through their stories and the myths that surround them by looking at the archaeology, sagas, stone carvings and burials of the Viking Age including a Viking Age skeleton displaying the battle injuries of a warrior. An interactive children’s area with saga telling, games and play activities allows exploring minds to delve deep into the world of Viking myth and uncover the supernatural powers of heroes and gods like Thor and Odin. Entry to Heroes is free. Heroes is product of partnerships between the York centre, the Jelling Stones Heritage Centre in Denmark, Manx National Heritage and Yorkshire Museums Trust.

Christmas is coming and so is Santa and his very special horse tram service, Douglas Borough Council has confirmed. The Santa horse trams are back for 2015 and will run eight times a day on Saturday December 19 and Sunday 20 December, starting at 10am from the Strathallan terminus. Regeneration and community committee chairman Councillor John Skinner said: ‘The horse tram service has a place in the hearts and minds of the people of the Isle of Man year round and especially at Christmas, so the Council is delighted to be able to offer this unique experience once again…to children of all ages.’ Prices are unchanged at £7.50 for adults and children aged two to 16, (under-twos travel free) while a group ticket of four (any age mix) costs just £20. Tickets buy a ride on the illuminated Santa tram, a visit to Santa’s grotto and a gift, refreshments in the Strathallan suite and an opportunity to visit the stables. TYNWALD WELCOMES SRI LANKAN CHURCH OFFICIAL Tynwald has contributed to facilitating links between the Diocese of Sodor and Man and the Church of Ceylon in Sri Lanka, after the President of Tynwald, Clare Christian, hosted a visit by the church’s Barbara Praesoody, who was accompanied by the Bishop of Sodor and Man, the Right Rev Robert Paterson. The visit was prompted by the Bishop’s leadership team exploring a companion link with Sri Lanka and subsequently inviting Mrs Praesoody, who lives in Kandy, to the Isle of Man for a week-long study visit. The Bishop explained: ‘I have had the privilege of visiting Sri Lanka on a couple of occasions in the last 18 months on behalf of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and made many new friends there. When we in the diocese were looking for a second companion link - the other is in Ireland - we thought of Sri Lanka. Barbara, who is secretary of the Church of Ceylon General Assembly, was invited to come and discuss the possibilities with us. I think we may have rushed her off her feet but I know that her visit to Tynwald with Madam President was a highlight.’ BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

This year’s Christmas pantomime at the Gaiety Theatre will transport you to a fantasy land, thanks to support from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. Sure, there’s presents to buy and goodwill to spread but a girls gotta look good to feel good so don’t shy away from the shops, follow the Gallery girls guide to shopping like a pro for a prosperous new you. IF IN DOUBT Repeat after me, “If in doubt, don’t buy it”. If it doesn’t feel “just right” then it’s, erm, just not right. You can always take a selfie and have a think about it later. Some of the following questions might help you make up your mind if you’re still feeling indecisive:

THE WARDROBE SHAKEDOWN Have a good trawl through your wardrobe. Lay it all out and pinpoint the common offenders: If you have 10+ white blouses, black skinnies, pencil skirts or Breton tops it’s probably safe to say you have that area covered (literally); so STOP buying the same safe thing over and over again! We all gravitate towards our familiar “look”, but it’s still possible to achieve a signature style without the exact same pieces every time. A simple tweak of colours, cut or textures can change things up without straying too far from the comfort zone. Try mixing a few things together that you had previously thought of as more chalk and cheese than Kim and Kanye. You could totally revamp that work dress with a black polo neck underneath and wear your sequinned miniskirt with the same black polo and a pair of ankle boots to make it daytime appropriate. Most “going out” skirts can be dressed down with thick black tights and a good winter coat to balance out any extra glitz or questionable hem issues. Don’t be too ruthless with the charity bag but if you haven’t worn something in the last two years it’s probably time to let it go. Alternatively, you could keep a “maybe” suitcase hidden in the wings because, well, you never know when that gilet may tickle your fancy again. OUTFIT OF THE (SHOPPING) DAY #OOTD The designated shopping day is not the day for knee-high lace up boots or your coated skinnies. Wear your neutral coloured undies, minimal jewellery, looser boyfriend jeans, slip on flat shoes or zip up boots and a round or V necked top to avoid static hair and extreme make-up removal after a trying on sesh. In order to avoid shoulder burn leave all your coppers at home and carry a small handbag preferably with a separate section solely for receipts to avoid any subsequent dustbin shuffling (yip, been there) if you later change your mind. For optimum shopping success hit the shops early and with a clear head, because hungover purchases are never a good look. Take your time browsing the shops to see

Stand out from the crowd/blend into the crowd (delete as appropriate) Q: Does it make sense for my lifestyle, will 3 inch heels work when I spend most of my day on my feet? Q: Is it really important to be able to sit down when wearing these jeans? Q: This feeling of “I suspect I look a bit silly but hey, it’s the fashion”, will pass, wont it? what’s out there before maxing out your magnetic strip in the first port of call. SO, WHAT DO YOU WANT? You know what you have now, thanks to the wardrobe shake down (truth be told, half of it is still lying on your bed) so you should also know which gaps need filling. If you’re looking for jeans, wear the boots that you’re most likely going to wear with those jeans. If you’re looking for a new dress then wear a dress shopping or bring a pair of tights so you don’t end up focusing on how pasty your legs are or how lumpy your knees look instead of how well the dress fits. If you’re looking for an outfit to wear to a wedding or Christmas party, a spray of fake tan the night before can go a long way. Never forget the 90/10 rule, it always makes more sense to spend most of your money on the things you wear 90% of the time rather than 10% of the time. Don’t be afraid to wear the same dress to a couple of different do’s but with a different pair of shoes/jacket/statement necklace/hat. If it’s good enough for Kate Middleton.. Maybe you just fancy a new top for Saturday night rather than a capsule wardrobe but make sure it’s gonna work with at least two things that you already own, in order to avoid adding to your cloth mountain of random items.

Q: This sequin evening dress is a steal and I may need it someday. If it’s in the sale, it would be rude not to, right? SHOP SMART To be a smart shopper you have to trust your own opinion. You need to learn which cuts suit your frame and which colours make your eyes pop (not actually pop, that’s gross) and that usually means shopping solo to zone out other influences or opinions. You also have to veer away from every new trend and also, on occasion, ignore shop sizing systems, which are a law unto themselves. It’s a good idea to try out at least one new shop per shopping trip which you’d previously never dreamed of going into. If you thought Monsoon was a bit too hippy you may be wrong and if you thought Gap men was just for men then you are sadly mistaken. Primark may make you think polyester, but you could be surprised to learn that it does a vast array of colourful long sleeved Tee’s which are perfect for layering under tops to give them a different twist, and only costs as much as that Frappuccino you’ve been slurping on all morning. Sorted!

CHRISTMAS RECIPES What’s your earliest Christmas memory? Peeling the wrapping paper off your very first bike? Sledding down some powdery snow on a tea tray? Or lovingly laying out mince pies and port for Santa? There’s something about roasting ‘the bird’ on December 25 that makes us more stressed than a Bake Off contestant whose Baked Alaska has melted

- particularly if, like many of us, you’ve been too busy buying pressies, catching up with friends and recovering from your office party to plan ahead with your cooking. But preparing your last-minute Christmas dinner needn’t feel like an audition for Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. You can still produce a perfectly delicious turkey, minus the frazzle.

MOIST TURKEY CROWN WITH CHESTNUT TRUFFLE STUFFING (Serves 4 to 6) Prep: 20 mins Cook: 1hr 10 mins plus 20 minutes brining and chilling time n 1 1/2kg turkey crown n 50g butter, softened n 1 shallot, softened n 200g wild mushrooms, finely chopped n 50ml Madeira n 100g chestnuts, finely chopped n Bunch thyme sprigs n 3tbsp truffle oil

For the brine: n 3L cold water n 140g salt n 5tbsp clear honey or brown sugar n Bunch thyme sprigs

For the gravy: n 1 shallot, finely chopped n 1tbsp flour n 100ml Madeira n 400ml chicken stock

To make the brine, heat 200ml of the water, salt, honey or sugar and a couple of thyme sprigs in a small pan. When the salt has dissolved, stir together with the remaining water. Place the turkey in a bowl and pour over the brine. Cover and chill for four to eight hours. For the stuffing, heat a knob of the butter in a frying pan. When melted, add the shallot and fry for a couple of minutes until softened. Add the mushrooms and fry for five minutes until they start to turn golden. Pour over the Madeira, add the chestnuts and the leaves from one thyme sprig. Cook for 10 minutes more until all the liquid has evaporated. Drizzle with the truffle oil and leave to cool, then mix together with the remaining butter. Remove the turkey from the brine and discard the liquid. Use kitchen paper to gently pat the meat until it’s dry all over, then use your fingers or a spoon to gently ease under the skin of the bird, making a pocket between its flesh and skin. Smear the truffle butter all over the flesh, following the contours of the breast. Brush a little more butter over the skin, then place in a roasting tin. You can chill it at this stage up to one day ahead. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Roast for one hour (about 40 minutes per kg). Halfway through cooking, baste with

the juices and loosely cover with foil if the skin is browning. Check that the turkey is done by piercing the thickest part with a skewer - the juices should run clear. Remove from the tin and leave to rest, covered loosely with foil, for 10 minutes. While the turkey is resting, make the gravy. Pour away any excess fat from the roasting tin, then place the tin over a medium heat on the hob. Tip in the shallot, then cook for a couple of minutes, stirring often. When the shallot has softened, sprinkle over the flour and mix through. Slowly pour in the Madeira, scraping up any caramelised cooking juices. If the gravy starts to turn lumpy, quickly whisk out any lumps. Bring to the boil and simmer until reduced by half, then pour in the chicken stock. Simmer for five to 10 minutes until lightly thickened. Strain before serving, if you like. ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

No matter how many pigs in blankets you’ve scoffed on Christmas Day, you can always make room for deserts, can’t you? The Japanese say we have a separate stomach (“betsubara”) for dessert, and it’s never more true than on December 25.

CHRISTMAS PUDDING RUM BALLS (Makes 12-18 balls, depending upon their size) n 200g dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids), broken into small

pieces n 175ml double cream n 5tbsp rum n Cocoa, finely crushed nuts, or sprinkles, to finish n Sugar holly decorations or real holly, to decorate

APPLE SNOW WITH FENNEL BISCUITS (Serves 6) For the Fennel Biscuits:

n 100g unsalted butter,

n 2 large cooking apples

n 100g caster sugar

n Juice of 1 lemon

n A pinch of sea salt

n 150g caster sugar

n 1tsp fennel seeds, lightly

n 2 egg whites

Cover a baking tray tightly with two layers of cling film. Tip the chocolate into a bowl. Put the cream in a pan and bring to the boil, but only just, then pour over the chocolate and stir until it has melted. Add the rum and mix it in. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature until set. Using a melon baller or teaspoon, divide the mixture into 12 portions. Dust your hands with icing sugar, to stop the mixture sticking, and roll the pieces into balls. Roll them in the sifted cocoa, crushed nuts or sprinkles and place them on the prepared tray. Decorate the rum balls with holly sugar decorations, or real holly, if you wish. TIP: To make a non-alcoholic version, the rum can be substituted with one to two teaspoons of vanilla, peppermint, coconut or orange extract. If you do this, make sure you increase the amount of double cream to make up for the liquid you have lost by not using the rum. GIFT IT: Package these carefully, not allowing them to touch each other - or anything else - too much, and eat soon after preparing and giving. Store any uneaten rum balls in the fridge.

n Zest of 1 lemon n 150g plain flour

Up to two week ahead (min. two hours) Make the Fennel Biscuits: beat the butter, sugar, salt, fennel seeds and lemon zest together until pale and light. Sift in the flour a little at a time, stirring as you go, until it forms a dough. Knead briefly with lightly floured hands until it comes together. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1cm thick, and cut out 12 biscuits. Prick a few times with a fork, then put on a baking sheet and chill for 20-30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 160C/Gas mark 3. Bake the biscuits for 1520 minutes until pale golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Up to one day ahead (min. two hours) Peel, core and roughly chop the apples. Put in a pan with the lemon juice, sugar, and a splash of water. Cover and cook over a medium-low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring regularly, until completely softened. Blend until smooth, then transfer to a bowl and leave to cool. In a clean bowl, whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Fold the whites thoroughly, though gently, through the cold apple, then cover and chill. To serve Serve the apple snow with the biscuits and a splash of cream.

THE ALTERNATIVES TO MULLED WINE As soon as December hits I get an overwhelming compulsion to mull everything. Mulled wine can be a bit boring though so here are a few alternatives to get you in the festive spirit this year. CRANBERRY PUNCH

This is also excellent with the booze left out. n 1 litre cranberry juice n 500ml apple juice n 3 cinnamon sticks n 5 cloves n 1 star anise n juice and zest peeled from 1 orange n 100ml vodka n 100ml Cointreau n 2-3 tablespoons caster sugar to taste

MULLED CIDER

Always a crowd pleaser and very cheap to make, for a booze-free version use cloudy apple juice instead and leave out the Drambuie.

Combine the first 5 ingredients in a pan over a gentle heat. Bring to a simmer and hold it there for 5 minutes. Stir in the sugar until dissolved, add the alcohol.

GLÖGG

This Scandinavian drink will have you waving goodbye to boring mulled wine and embracing Nordic boozing. n 750ml red wine, something like a spicy

shiraz works well

n 2 litres still cider, cloudy ones work

n 250ml port

n 15 green cardamom pods

n 2 oranges

n 5 sticks cinnamon

n 2 cinnamon sticks

n 6 cloves

n 5 cloves

n 1 vanilla pod split lengthways to expose

expose seeds

n peel from 1 orange, avoid the white pith

n 60ml Drambuie

n 1 fresh quince, sliced thickly (optional)

n 2-3 tablespoons of caster sugar to taste

n 100ml brandy n 1 handful raisins

Pour the cider into a large pan and put on the stove on a low heat. Slice the oranges in half and squeeze the juice into the pan then add the other spices. Cover and heat just until it’s about to boil then lower heat. Taste and add extra sugar if required and add the Drambuie.

EGG NOG

I was pretty averse to the idea of egg nog up until I made my own and discovered it’s potent creamy awesomeness. n 8 very fresh organic eggs, separated

into yolks and whites

n 400g caster sugar n 500ml double cream n 500ml milk n 1 teaspoon vanilla paste n 300ml bourbon n 200ml rum

n 1 handful blanched almonds

Combine the first 9 ingredients and heat gently in a large saucepan, allow to simmer for five minutes then add the brandy. In each glass combine some raisins and almonds then pour the glögg over the top. Beat the egg yolks with the caster sugar until thoroughly combined, gradually beat in the alcohols, the vanilla, the milk and 250ml of the double cream. Ideally you should then cover this mixture with cling film and allow to rest in the fridge for 2 hours. After 2 hours beat the egg whites in a clean bowl until stiff peak stage. Remove your mixture from the fridge and give it a good stir. Stir in the whipped egg whites then whip the remaining double cream and stir that in also. Serve in glasses topped with freshly grated nutmeg.

CANAPÉ INSPIRATION Whether you call them canapés or nibbles, avoid the children’s birthday style food this party season and impress your guest with some simple but impressive bite sized gems. Make sure you account for the vegetarians amongst your guests and bulk out the spread with crisps and dip, olives and flavoured nuts. Make sure you provide your guests with napkinspaper plates are left for buffet meals. The rule of thumb is: *serving suggestion

HOW TO PRESENT THE PERFECT CHEESE BOARD A whole course once you gain a second wind post-roast. There are many controversies when it comes to the cheese course- first and foremost does it come before or after pudding? The Royal Household serve cheese as the final course, however, Queen Mary Berry has recently revealed she enjoys cheese before her sweet- it looks like the argument continues. Either way the cheese course signals decadence and indulgence at the end of an evening. Eating until you can eat no more, only leaving room for coffee and maybe even a cigar. The cheese course is traditionally accompanied by port-tradition dictates that the decanter should be placed to the right of the host at the table and passed to the left, travelling round the table from guest to guest in a clockwise direction until it comes back to its starting point. This is because most people are right handed, leaving one’s sword arm free in case of trouble. A classic cheese board will include a mixture of hard cheese like cheddar; and a blue, such as Stilton. Serve a fresh, young goats’ cheese and a soft white cheese such as Brie or Camembert. If that’s not enough you could also add a washed-rind cheese; a sheep’s cheese; or a cheese flavoured with herbs. With this many cheese you don’t need great chunks, enough for everyone to taste (rind may be eaten or left). Accompaniments should include a minimum of grapes, celery and a choice of biscuits. A good biscuit selection is essential considering it is the vestal that carries the cheese. Water biscuits, oatcakes, digestive biscuits or flavoured crackers are all good choices. Some people may also prefer bread and butter. Sliced apple, figs and dried fruit all enhance the flavours of the cheese and provide a refreshingly sweet addition to the board.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

For a two-hour party serve 6-8 nibbles per person; For a four-hour bash – 8-10 nibbles per person and for an all-evening event – serve 10-12 nibbles per person.

Smoked salmon Bellini

Spread a generous layer of cream cheese over the mini bellinis, top with a curl of smoked salmon and a sprinkling of dill.

Parma ham breadsticks

Simply wrap strips of the Parma ham around a breadstick, make sure you leave a space at the bottle to hold.

Chorizo and prawn sticks

Chutneys and quince jelly are also necessary. Two or three seem like a good selection, one sharp, one fresh and one fruity.

A killer combination. Use cocktail sticks to prick a prawn followed by a slice of chorizo. It is easiest to buy cooked prawns and be generous with the size.

Nuts, olive oil and crunchy sea salt are optional extras.

Goats cheese on toast

Serving style: serve on a cheese plate, alternatively a large wooden chopping board. A piece of slate gives a fashionable twist, it can be written on in chalk for an impressive centrepiece. Implements: a proper cheese knife is essential with their cut-out blades and double-prongs, it may seem an extravagant investment when your standard kitchen knife will do the same trick. Always use the cheese knife provided on the board to cut cheese from the board, not your own knife. Round cheese must be treated like a cake: cut triangular portions. With a wedge such as Brie, cut slivers lengthways. Stilton is usually sliced, but if a spoon is provided, scoop a portion of cheese from the middle. And most importantly, never, ever, cut the nose off a triangular wedge.

Most importantly cheese should always be served at room temperature, it is easy to get carried away so set a remember to take it out of the fridge in good time before serving.

Either buy or make your own mini crostini, spread over a thin layer of pesto and top with goats cheese or a post version of your favourite comfort food.

Cucumber rounds

Use creamed crab or smashed avocado to top chunky slices of cucumber. This is great for the health conscious or those avoiding gluten.

Poppadom bites

If you cant find mini poppadoms break large ones into bite size pieces. Top with homemade mango chutney made of finely chopped mango, green chilli, red onion, coriander and the zest and juice of a lime.

Chicken satay dippers

Thread mini chicken fillets onto a skewer and cook. Slacken crunchy peanut butter with coconut milk. Sprinkle with coriander and chopped peanuts and enjoy.

Pesto stuffed tomatoes

Another delicious meat-free option, this can be fiddly but the results pay off. Use a small sharp knife to cut the tops off the cherry tomatoes and keep to one side. Use a teaspoon to remove the seeds. Mix pesto and cream cheese, use this mix to fill the tomatoes. Replace the lids and serve.

Ideas For Home-Made Foodie Presents Christmas shopping doesn’t have to be such a drag; have fun whilst making thoughtful gifts for friends and family this year. Rather than bringing flowers or a bottle when you are invited round for supper, bring something everyone can enjoy. Simply wrap in foil or a clear freezer bag, add ribbon and a gift tag for that loving touch.

Fudge A deliciously indulgent treat

everyone will love. Don’t stick to the basic flavours. Get experimental with peanut butter, rum and raisin, chocolate chip or coconut. Cut into bite size pieces.

Shortbread great for getting the children involved especially if you use festive cutters. Refrigerate for a minimum of 30 minutes to make sure the dough is cold before cooking to get the famous shortbread crumble. Mulled wine kit Perfect for those who are not natural chefs, this has no cooking involved. Box up a bottle of red wine, some mulling spices with extra cloves and oranges. Add a wooden spoon and some written mulling instructions.

Caramelised nuts sweet or savoury, rub with honey or curry paste and roast at 180° for 15mins. Make sure you leave them to cool before packaging. Flavoured vodka something special

for the adults to get the party started. Dissolve sugar with the fruits and herbs of your choice, add to the vodka and seal well. Leave for four weeks to let the flavours steep. This can be substituted for gin if preferred- both best served ice cold.

Cake mix jars simply measure out the dry ingredients of a cake of your choice and layer into a jar a clean, dry jam jar. Copy a recipe onto a label along side a personal message. Make sure the jar is well sealed.

Lemon curd easy to make in large batches and with only three ingredients and one pan, kitchen mess is kept to a minimum. Granola nothing beats a bowl of homemade granola in the morning, super easy to make and with an endless array of flavours to choose from there is no doubt you will be asked for more. Savoury oatcakes easy to make and delicious with cheese or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for a weekend brunch. Candied peel slice the peel of an

orange or two, boil in sugar, can dip in dark chocolate or keep plain to use in baking

Produced in the Prosecco region, they cannot be labelled ‘Prosecco’ because they do not contain a high enough percentage of Glera, the Prosecco grape. Castellblanc Brut is produced using the three local Spanish grape varieties, Xarel-lo, Parellada and Macabeo. Dry and fresh, it has flavours of citrus, melon and peach balanced by an underlying character of baking bread as a result of the second fermentation taking place in the bottle. An ideal party wine at £50 for 6 bottles. Anna Blanc de Noirs is a completely different style, produced from Pinot Noir grapes, that are fermented without the skins. Shoprite’s Manx ‘Startisans’ programme is looking to identify the potential in a local food entrepreneur who wants to get their idea off the ground, or take their fledgling idea to the next level. Shoprite has already helped a number of local producers to develop their proposition to a stage where a major food retailer can stock it. The company’s team works with local producers to help them with branding, packaging, marketing, pricing. Many of the companies that started out as home based operations have now gone on to reach the stage where they can now be exported to UK and international markets.

The winning entrepreneur will receive a guaranteed listing in Shoprite’s stores for six months as well as receiving start-up operations marketing support, packaging, product development and presentation advice including one to one sessions from the panel of experts as well as a free stand at the 2016 Isle of Man Food and Drink Show. Shoprite’s parent company Isle of Man Enterprises will also make available free of charge one of its retail units in Village Walk, Onchan for a six month period.

Can you become a Manx Startisan and join the local food revolution? The Isle of Man has a large number of well established local food producers, particularly involved with meat and dairy industries, that allow large food retailers like Shoprite to operate ‘import substitution’ where they can support local producers by offering local alternatives. However, the Island can always support more niche providers which not only benefit the local economy but also provide premium quality, healthy alternatives to well known brands with provenance that can be tracked back directly to local sources. New businesses are being set up by local people who are passionate about food and drink who are creating products that reflect those premium quality values with delicious, home spun products that are far superior to the mass produced, well established alternatives.

The Manx couple, who both went to St Ninian’s School, Douglas, say they looked hard before buying ‘Betty’ on eBay. They have put hours of work on the vintage classic caravan, which has been converted to a food trailer.

Vicky and Benn’s ‘Betty’ has been prominent at a number of high profile events over the summer including the Isle of Man Food and Drink Festival at the Villa Marina. People have been queueing up for the freshly cooked pies that use locally produced Manx ingredients including a pale ale pie and one using Greeba mushrooms, gorgonzola and tarragon as well as a mouthwatering roast chicken pot pie.

‘Cider and pies are a match made in heaven,’ said Vicky, 39, from their home in Stanley Road, Peel. ‘The island is a huge place for opportunity and we are up for the challenge of running our own businesses.’ Vicky says she does not regret leaving her job. ‘I think there is so much opportunity for business in the island and it does not all have to revolve around the finance sector,’ she said.

Not content with just one business the entrepreneurial pair are also involved in a drinks business. Benn explained that after running a small but successful cider company in Somerset they moved back to their ‘true home, the Isle of Man’. He said: ‘I love cider and I love making it so we decided to give it a go on the rock. He added: ‘We aim to get Manx Cider well and truly on the map.’ Benn makes his cider in Peel, which has brand names such as Johnny Jump Up, Jenny Lay Back and Jimmie Kickstart. It is currently sold in a number of select independent venues on the Isle of Man.

These include the Creek and the Marine in Peel along with the Thirsty Pigeon and Noa Bakehouse in Douglas

At present the company produce a few thousand litres a year from its premises in Peel but there are plans to expand and broaden distribution as demand and awareness grows. ‘It would have been lovely to have access to a ready supply of cider apples, unfortunately there are only very limited supplies on the island hence at present my cider is made up from a blend of Manx and Herefordshire cider apples, all of which, come from unsprayed orchards. ‘With modern orcharding techniques and the loan of various plots of land from our friends we hope we can reach this goal.’ To that end the Manx National Farmers’ Union, and DEFA, invited orchard specialist John Worle to the Island to give a presentation on the establishment of cider apple orchards. John has been involved in apple growing and cider since he was 17 working in various cider and apple companies and has grown over half a million bare rooted trees in Herefordshire.’

If Benn and Vicky have their way, it might not be long before the fruits of their efforts are known beyond the Island’s shores but for now their pies and cider – and Betty – are a local secret.

A great relationship! This is how Martyn Riley refers to both the working and father/ son relationship he has with 30-year-old son Thomas who is the fifth generation of a business which has been going for 133 years and proudly basks under the name of Riley’s Garden and Lifestyle Centre. “Yes, we’ve had our differences but we get on really well,” emphasises managing director and company secretary Martyn, who regularly underlines the fact to all and sundry that his first name is Martyn, but with a ‘Y’. “We like our names, “declares an unequivocal Martyn, who exudes bonhomie coupled with a robust sense of humour while heir apparent Thomas, is a tad enigmatic and initially more wary of being under the microscope of an interview. “I got on well with my father and it’s the same with Thomas, better I think,” says Martyn, who played rugby for 33 years and admits he has the scars to prove it. “As a family we go on holiday together, let’s face it you bond with your kids, especially when working together as Thomas and I have done since he came into the business seven years ago.” Martyn goes on: “Thomas is very intense, has good morals, is a thinker, when he gets involved in something he sees it right through to the very end. He’s certainly more focused than I am and more creative. I’m throwing ideas around all the time, Thomas carries them out. It’s probably a bit like the rapier against the sabre.” The rapport and friendship between the two is readily apparent. Marketing director Thomas, who has a degree in marketing and business, makes no secret of the respect and affection he has for his father and what he has achieved. “Dad is one of the hardest workers I’ve

known. He still does far too many hours than he should but that’s just part of his character. He is also a good father figure and role model, is very family focused which is also transferred to the staff and the business itself; he is always willing to help out and go that extra mile.” Thomas, a successful athlete who also has a big interest in power and weight lifting, goes on: “My coming into the business wasn’t a foregone conclusion but I do enjoy the family side of it and with it this kind of business. I like change and all that goes with marketing. It’s nice to build a brand that is quite different to the Isle of Man. In the UK a garden centre would be quieter in the week and busy at weekends but here we are busy during the week. “We want people to see we don’t just sell

We want Riley’s to become a destination address for families.” The matriarch of the family, which also includes daughter Hannah, is Brenda who has seen the achievements made by husband Martyn when he took over the running of the business from his father and is now watching the changes that are being introduced by her son. “She is so hard working and an intricate part of the business and has been for well over 20 years,” declares Thomas. “Mum has been the backbone for Dad, behind a strong man there is an even stronger woman,” he says with a laugh. In a lighthearted jibe directed towards his father, Thomas adds: “To be honest, she has the hardest job of us all, working all day and THEN having to look after Dad.” To have survived for 133 years and continuing to flourish today, Riley’s is clearly a business synonymous with hard work from the early days when it was on North Quay in Douglas and it was that

Dad invested in the company, took risks, there were trying times and there was a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears to achieve success. Dad has done all that on his own.”

Tis the season to be... setting some New Year’s Resolutions for your Financial Well Being At this time of year it is not unusual for us to spend some time setting personal goals and aspirations for the New Year ahead but how many of us actually do this in relation to our financial planning? Here are seven financial planning resolutions, which should make 2016 a more secure and prosperous New Year for you. 1. MAKE A PLAN Set some financial goals and aspirations. Review your current financial situation, consider where you would like to be in 12 months’ time and look at your longer-term targets. Are you expecting any major changes to your circumstances e.g. receipt of an inheritance or large future expense? The use of a budget planner can identify where savings can be made.

2. PRIORITISE ANY DEBTS Check the interest rate being charged on your mortgage, loans and credit cards. Interest rates have been very low for seven years but this is expected to change as we head into 2016. Make sure the rates you are paying are competitive and take advantage of any offers available from different providers. Be mindful though of any costs to change provider.

3. REVIEW YOUR PROTECTION POLICIES Check what policies you have in place to cover you and your family in the event of death, suffering a critical illness, or being unable to work due to sickness or injury. Your employer may also offer valuable protection benefits. Knowing that all bases are covered offers peace of mind, but also ensures that your long-term savings are not used to cover day-to-day living expenses. If you are self-employed the need for adequate protection is perhaps of even greater importance given that not being able to work could mean you will not be paid. Business owners should also consider what plans they have in place to cope

with the loss of a shareholder, partner or key person and the potential impact this may have on their business.

4. TRY AND SAVE SOME MONEY ON A REGULAR BASIS It is very important to have an emergency fund to cover any unforeseen expenses. Typically this is suggested at between 3 to 6 months’ worth of normal expenditure. Other more specific goals for savings could be to fund a wedding, assist towards university fees, a deposit for a house purchase, purchasing a new car or just to ensure we have sufficient funds to cover our funeral costs. For longer-term savings, cash accounts may not be the most appropriate or rewarding due to the low rates of interest offered and the effects of inflation. Think about other options available to you such as regular savings into unit trusts and investment funds, which over the longer term should provide a better return than cash. Please bear in mind though that the value in these types of investments can fall as well as rise. Consider other products that offer an alternative to cash accounts such as Premium Bonds through National Savings and Investments, as winnings are tax-free. When holding a substantial amount of cash with local institutions, be aware that the Isle of Man Depositors Compensation Scheme has a limit of £50,000 per person, per institution.

5. REVIEW YOUR INVESTMENTS When was the last time these were reviewed? Make sure you look at these on a regular basis and at least once a

year to ensure they continue to meet your objectives, expectations and risk profile. Do you still want capital growth or is income now more of a priority or perhaps a combination of the two? Check what fees are being paid to the provider and your adviser. The world of investment is constantly changing and there may now be a more appropriate investment solution available to you not available previously.

6. REVIEW YOUR EXISTING PENSIONS Retirement may be some years away but that does not mean you should ignore your existing pension arrangements. With more and more of us living longer it is essential that we know when we can afford to retire. A review of your existing plans should establish your current position and clarify what level of pension contribution will now need to be made in order to ensure you have a comfortable living in retirement. Personal contributions will also be eligible for tax relief providing they are within the permitted limits. Recent changes to the UK pension legislation, allowing pension freedom, is presently being considered by the Isle of Man Government as well as changes to the Isle of Man state pension, so watch this space for further developments in these matters. Consider whether the existing pension arrangement you presently have is going to provide you with all the benefits you need or indeed if not would an alternative pension arrangement be more suitable. The use of a Self-Invested Personal Pension (“SIPP”) provides more flexibility than the more traditional

personal pension arrangements, removing the requirement to purchase an annuity, however, there is also a cost element to consider when assessing the merits or otherwise of a change in pension arrangement/provider. 7. MAKE A WILL AND ESTABLISH A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY (“LPA”) This is to ensure your wishes are carried out in the event of your death (Will) or if you are unable to look after your financial affairs due to mental incapacity (LPA). The cost for establishing these can be far outweighed by the peace of mind they can provide.

In fact, it’s estimated that the modern day lover would need at least £17,000 in his, or perhaps her, pocket for the four calling birds, the eight maids a-milking and all the rest as epitomised in The Twelve Days of Christmas. This song, or carol to some, of the festive season conjures up nostalgic and cosy images of yesteryear when families gathered round the yuletide fire, played forfeits, ate mince pies and drank mulled wine in large quantities. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes this song, which in December becomes supermarket background music, is taken from an 18th century children’s book for a fireside memory-and-forefeits game. One hundred years later it was played every twelfth day night before eating mince pies and twelfth cake. The leader of the game began by saying the lines of the “first day” and they were repeated by each participant in turn and for each mistake a forfeit was demanded. In France the song, perhaps not surprisingly, concentrates more on food along with 11 “beautiful full-breasted maidens and 12 musketeers with their swords”! In the early 1990s a ‘cool’ young lover would have got away with a mere £2,000 to cover the cost of The Twelve Days of Christmas extravaganza – although this would have been seen as love at bargain basement level – with the more ambitious and frivolous perhaps paying out at least double at the luxury end of the market. It was an era when the first of The 12 Days of Christmas would end in a relatively modest outlay for a partridge from a

friendly gamekeeper and perhaps £10 for the pear tree from the local garden centre. Inflation over the last two decades has put paid to all that. A brace of partridges, if available and not frozen that is, would cost around £6 from the local butcher while the pear tree more like £25.

The Cosmopolitan Islander An interview with local business woman and writer, Michelle P. Tonnesen, who has just published her debut novel You have been a business consultant for quite a while – why did you decide to write a novel? Words and playing with them have always been a great interest of mine. I have written for many years, but it was primarily nonfiction; academic papers and corporate communication. Then a few years back, I started fiddling with creative writing, and I did a course at London School of Journalism just before moving to the island. I was lucky to become a writer here for Gallery and Agenda, alongside working on my novel. I believe most people have a story in them, but few get the chance to express it. It takes time and dedication – fortunately, I managed to find both in between juggling consulting work and my family too. What is your novel about? The Cosmopolitan Islander is about women’s roles in the 21st century; the juggling act many women face of having to be an executive in the boardroom, mother in the nursery, and domestic goddess in the kitchen – and bedroom. But it’s also about the wider issue of identity in general – men’s too. How you and your perspectives and values develop through life and are influenced by who you meet, what you do, the choices you make, and even where you live. Then it’s about love and sex and the balance between the two. About power and money, and how these impact our lives, careers, hopes, and dreams. It’s about friendships, and how they can develop in the most unexpected ways. And then it is a declaration of love for the Isle of Man! Where did you get your inspiration from? Obviously my own life. I won’t deny that the main character Chloe is my alter ego. She is more extreme in her personality and behaviour, though; has different strengths and weaknesses – and most of her experiences are fictional, of course. The whole cast of characters and the story are inspired by lots of different people and events, real as well as fictional. TV series, films, friends, family, random strangers in the street, park, restaurant or when travelling – they have all inspired me and triggered different scenes and emotions I could channel into my novel.

Is it an autobiography then? No, I would not define it as such. It’s fiction. But every author from Jane Austen to Nora Ephron and Charles Dickens to Stephen King, they have all been inspired by their own lives, drawn from their own experiences, and built their fictional stories and characters on what they know and emotions they have felt. Comedians, songwriters, and scriptwriters do it all the time too. It’s a bit like method acting – you dip into personal memories to be able to imagine fictional what-if scenarios. Who will read your book? Hopefully, everyone! I believe most women – both on and off the island – will be able to identify with the female protagonist in some way or another. But I also think a lot of men can relate to the main male character and his challenges of balancing his work, family, and relationship – the modern man’s roles and society’s expectation of him have changed a lot too. Some people may even find some inspiration in the sex scenes! Sex scenes? Is it another “Fifty Shades of Grey”? Sex is not the main theme of the novel – but as it’s a part of most people’s lives, naturally it’s a central element in the relationships which Chloe develops throughout the story. The recent wave of erotic literature has certainly made it more acceptable to have sex scenes in mainstream literature too – and why shouldn’t it be? Perhaps some people still find it controversial, but I will leave it up to the individual reader to judge. Tell us about the self-publishing route – was it a challenge? It was definitely a steep learning curve! The publishing world in itself is completely new to me. And with so much happening over the last five to ten years in terms of e-books and self-publishing, there is a lot to get your head around. Editing, formatting, covers, copyrights, printing, pricing, marketing, sales – you have to manage it all yourself as an author when you choose this path. But it has been such a fun challenge – and hopefully it will be more financially rewarding too when the copies start flying off the virtual shelves! When is your novel out? Ask for a meeting and calmly explain that you’ve noticed your ideas are being overlooked and you would be grateful for some suggestions about the direction you should take to make a positive contribution. This is your face-off moment. Stand tall, fake it if you have to, but never show weakness to this wagon. Be amazing! However, if things don’t improve, don’t hesitate in seeking help. Make a note of the time and date of every incident or remark and hotfoot it to HR.

What if you’re the boss:

The pressure of being pushed and pulled is intense! Can you be a good boss without being bossy? Solution: To avoid the “bad boss” title you will need to be a hybrid psychologist, politician, teacher and parent. Simple! Your workforce family need the same things as any family to avoid dysfunction. Believe it or not, they like spending time with you, they feel safer with boundaries, discipline and direction and they love being praised. You have to recognise each member is different and allow them to cultivate their own style. If you get mad at the quiet one for not being an extrovert you are ultimately restricting their output and damaging the company. Also, keep your feet on the ground, make the tea and do some of the day to day tasks to inspire trust and respect; as well as dispelling any resentment. The currency of cake never hurts either!

She trusts no-one and undermines everything you do. If she says “just Bcc me” one more time.... Solution: Do it her way. This boss needs control of everything, so, give it to her and then some. Ask for daily meetings and update her with every detail of your working day, every single thought, action or email. Ask her how she would like things done, if she would like to be copied in, which font she prefers and if she would like to see final drafts. Jot down everything she says and do it, until eventually she learns to trust you. Like it or not, this is the way she works so keep one step ahead and manage that micromanagement, if you see what we mean!

Needy boss:

Good enough at her job but seems to have invented the “bring your personal problems to work day”. There’s also crying! Solution: Remember how you used to handle the emotional girl in school; the one who was always on the cusp of a drama, a boyfriend crisis or hair DISASTER? It’s the same here; you should offer an ear but try to maintain a professional distance to avoid being drawn in by every exhausting new crisis. MANX TELECOM AN “ESSENTIAL PART” OF ISLAND’S ECO SYSTEM, SAYS CEO GARY LAMB Words: Les Able

Companies such as Manx Telecom whose abilities to grow are limited on a small Island will need to innovate, enter more partnerships and potentially acquire if they are to continue to flourish and expand. This was the message delivered by Gary Lamb, chief executive officer of Manx Telecom, who was guest speaker at the Institute of Directors final Dining Club event for 2015 held at the Sefton Hotel. Mr Lamb, who took over the reins of CEO in July this year having joined Manx Telecom in 2011 as finance director, pointed to what is already happening in the UK telecoms industry, with BT looking to acquire the UK’s largest network provider EE, while mobile giant 3 is buying 02. When referring to the company Mr Lamb said: “I firmly believe Manx Telecom is an essential part of the eco system which enables the Isle of Man to grow and flourish, thus it’s vitally important for us to ensure ongoing

success and continue to invest in the Isle of Man. In the past 10 years alone, we’ve invested over £110m in the Island’s telecommunications infrastructure, more recently, we’ve invested £10m to bring the Island its first 4G network, delivering tangible benefits for both consumers and businesses.” In terms of innovation, Mr Lamb confirmed that Manx Telecom is involved in trying to attract new businesses and new technology to the island, potentially creating new job opportunities in the future. “We are working with a number of early stage companies with regards innovative technology. One example is Goshawk Communications, involved in a current trial on Island, which aims to use a combination of audiology software and an advanced telecom network to improve the quality of life of hearing impaired people as they use their phone.”

Mr Lamb added: “I believe that for the Isle of Man, Manx Telecom makes the future possible.” Clive Parrish, chairman of the Isle of Man branch of the IoD said: “We are delighted to welcome Gary and hear about Manx Telecom’s commitment to the island and discuss the challenges that It faces as a business operating in a relatively small local marketplace but with opportunities in the UK and beyond.”

GRANT THORNTON OFFERS ADVICE ON BECOMING CYBER-SECURE Cyber-attacks are set to grow in number and nature, and companies that embed security measures into their culture will be most successful at fending them off according to Grant Thornton. The firm’s global leader for forensic & investigation services Paul Jacobs has examined the cyber-threats faced by businesses today, and ways to counter them. Richard Ratcliffe, a director of Grant Thornton in the Isle of Man, said it is vital the advice is carefully considered. He said: ‘As Paul explains, the stereotype of cyber-criminals as shady-looking young men in hoodies hunched over laptops in dark corners couldn’t be further from the truth. Today’s cyber-attackers have evolved into organised, skilful, extremely agile profit-driven businesses that usually operate internationally. ‘Grant Thornton research suggests cyber-crime is costing companies more than $300 billion a year globally, and the Isle of Man is not immune. In fact, many Island firms rely very heavily on online communication to transact international business and could therefore be vulnerable to these sophisticated criminal attacks. That makes it even more important that any Isle of Man company which is serious about security reads Paul’s recommendations and follows his advice.’ Paul reveals cyber-criminals are increasingly using underground supply chains to develop, distribute and deploy customised malware to carry out attacks. Financial gain is the chief motive, but hackers have launched attacks for other

reasons such as the apparent ‘moral imperative’ which drove the targeting of extra-marital affair website Ashley Madison and attempts to steal intellectual property. Regardless of motive, Paul says, cyber-crime is predicted to grow in volume and level of sophistication. The response of international governments to the threat has been generally ‘slow and inadequate’, he says, although positive action has been taken by some countries. However, fighting cyber-criminals cannot just be left to governments and regulators, and many companies are also failing to act. Paul warns that not strengthening cyberdefences can be costly and can threaten the survival of a business due to the reputational damage and loss of trust suffered when systems are breached. TYNWALD HOSTS STUDY VISIT FOR SENIOR GUERNSEY AND JERSEY CLERKS Tynwald has hosted a study visit for Dr Mark Egan, recently appointed Greffier of the States of Jersey, and Simon Ross, HM Deputy Greffier of the States of Guernsey. The two-day visit provided opportunities to meet with their Isle of Man counterparts, the Clerk of Tynwald Roger Phillips, Deputy Clerk Jonathan King and Third Clerk Joann Corkish, as well as with Members and senior officers, and to observe committee proceedings. Reflecting on the visit Dr Egan, who is currently Deputy Head of Table Office at the House of Commons and will take up his new appointment in December said: ‘Meeting our island “neighbours” is always extremely valuable. We do, of course, share some of the same challenges, not least in matters of parliamentary scrutiny and how best to serve Members, but there is also the issue of how to make the institution of parliament matter to the people and in this Tynwald would seem to be achieving considerable success.’ Mr Ross said: ‘Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are all Crown Dependencies and, as such, largely deal with the same outside agencies, so collaborative working and inter-parliamentary engagement are crucial in helping to strengthen links between us.’ He continued: ‘Although not quite sovereign states we can, as Crown Dependencies, project ourselves through our assemblies,’ and he went on to refer to the importance smaller jurisdictions, in particular, placed on their membership of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). ‘The CPA is one of the very few international bodies where we are represented in our own right. If we don’t

participate, we don’t exist.’ During their visit Dr Egan and Mr Ross attended a briefing from the First Deemster, His Honour David Doyle, which prompted Dr Egan to observe: ‘To have His Honour sit as a Judge of Appeal in the Courts of Appeal in Jersey and Guernsey is enormously valuable as it brings a unique insight and understanding to proceedings.’ Mr Ross went on to say that the scale of Tynwald’s committee work, being more extensive than that of the States of Guernsey, was of particular interest. ‘It’s certainly something that I shall take back, along with how Tynwald successfully engages with the community in celebrating its heritage.’ Echoing the sentiments of Mr Ross Dr Egan said: ‘I, too, was interested to see how tours of Tynwald, the shop, the Tynwald Library and the work of the Information Service are helping to make those important connections between the people and parliament. Outreach is clearly a major part of the work of Tynwald; it’s highly visible and linked to the Isle of Man’s past. ‘In Jersey we, too, are keen to develop meaningful links with the local population. Parliaments are driven now by a new dynamic; a modern parliament can no longer be only for its Members, it also has to be for and engage with the community it serves.’

ISLE OF MAN BANK CELEBRATES 150TH ANNIVERSARY Isle of Man Bank celebrated its 150th year serving the local community in November. The bank, which opened its doors for the first time on 1st November 1865, said that it wouldn’t have been able to celebrate the milestone without the support from their customers and the wider Isle of Man Community. To mark the occasion, Isle of Man Bank hosted a thank you evening for a number of customers, past and present colleagues and guests from the Isle of Man community. Visitors at the event were taken on a journey through their banking history which included old pictures, timelines and memorabilia. An animation was also projected on the outside of their Athol Street building during the evening and in the lead up to the event so that the whole Island can celebrate this anniversary with them.
