Yes! 100 perfectly formed, clever, funny, inspirational editions have slipped out the door since Gallery was born in August 2011. Many of you have probably read every single one, cover to cover, and followed all the plots twists of life on our humble island and we want to genuinely thank you for all your support, for taking the time to read one of our 800,000+ printed copies, for sharing your stories and for following ours. Gallery leads because you follow! We may have been around for ten wonderful years but imagine if it was one hundred. Have a read through our Gallery Centenary feature on page 16 to find out how Gallery would have looked back in the day. If, of course, you’d rather live in the now, then take yourself to our, ‘what’s on,’ pages for your comprehensive winter entertainment guide. The book includes 70 paintings of his favourite buildings, lanes and streets, and are tied together in the book by historical interludes in the lives of ordinary Douglas folk from the last 150 years, written by Valerie Cottle. Copies of the book are available from all local independent bookshops, the Manx Museum and the House of Manannan. Proceeds from the book will go to the Isle of Man Woodland Trust (charity no. 902).

//MANX MUSEUM, DOUGLAS// ‘Extinct,’ the new temporary exhibition in partnership with Manx Wildlife Trust follows on from the recent publication of Birds of Conservation Concern Isle of Man by Manx BirdLife and the forthcoming publication of Plants of Conservation Concern Isle of Man by MWT. There are many species that have become locally extinct on the Isle of Man, particularly birds and plants, and this trend is not slowing down. These disappearances are symptomatic of a difficult state of affairs, reflecting that the global biodiversity crisis is impacting our Island and that islands are particularly sensitive to changes in management and climate.

PLAN.COM CONFIRMS SANTA’S ON A BIKE CHARITY EVENT TO TAKE PLACE THIS DECEMBER The Island’s most exciting festive fundraiser event is back and is expected to be bigger than ever! Taking place on Saturday 11 December, and hosted by telecommunications and platform provider, plan.com, Santa’s on a Bike will see hundreds of motorbikes gather for a mass ride-out and festive celebration all in aid of Rebecca House Children’s Hospice. Following the same route as the 2020 event, riders are invited to don their finest Christmas costumes and jump on their bikes, to raise money for the local children’s Charity. The festive ride out begins at the Sea Terminal, heading through Douglas via the NSC, then heading to Castletown before returning to cross the finish line at Rebecca House Children’s Hospice in the Strang, Braddan. Nicola Patterson, event organiser and Director of People Experience at plan.com commented: “We were super grateful to be able to host the 2020 event after the year we had with COVID, but we had a recording breaking year in terms of both the number of riders and the amount raised, hitting over £35,000! This year we hope to see another 200 Santas involved in the celebrations as we spread some festive cheer following another tough year.”

She continued: “We’re always blown away and incredibly grateful for the local support we receive, from riders to spectators, local companies to the police, and we can’t wait to show everyone what we have in store for this year’s event!” Anne Mills, Chief Executive of Hospice Isle of Man added: “Santa’s on a Bike is such an exciting event and is a firm favourite of ours! We look forward to it throughout the year. We are beyond grateful to plan.comfor choosing Rebecca House to be the events chosen charity. So what’s Ramsey best known for? Beaches? The pier? Its independent shops and free parking? Obviously it hasn’t got the nickname of ‘Sunny Ramsey’ for nothing but even on a gloomy day there‘s another reason to look north – its stunning street art. Back in 2009 Ramsey artist Michael Starkey was commissioned to brighten up a tranquil spot between Parliament Street and the swing bridge and his forest mural Yn Arragh (Manx Gaelic for Spring/ Summertime) continues to provide the backdrop to a sheltered seating area. But since Michael painted that, the street art scene on the Isle of Man seemed to move to Douglas, with work by Jimmy Duggan and more recently Karoline Pawlowska who’s been creating ‘pop up’ murals around town. In Castletown, Megan Hindley’s fierce police dogs adorn the Civic Centre (now home to the police station) and the aforementioned Pawlowska was finally able to complete her huge marine themed mural on the seaward side of Port St Mary Town Hall in July last year. But Ramsey didn’t want to be left behind. In 2018 Ramsey Town Commissioners conceived and agreed the concept of painting the shelters on Mooragh Promenade. These four small structures,

built after WW2, provide shelter from the sun, wind and rain, and seating for those who want to admire the sweeping bay or the architecture and activities going on. “We wanted to provide opportunities for local artists to celebrate Ramsey and the beautiful views up towards Bride, and to add interest and colour to what were actually very drab shelters,” says Ramsey Commissioner Juan McGuiness. With some delays, the project was due to get underway at the beginning of 2020 but, like so many things, it was derailed by Covid and it wasn’t until this Spring that Beth Luella, whose shelter is at the swimming pool end, and Adam Berry, opposite the skate park and BMX track finally got started. Whatever your ideas about street art – and this project is as far from graffiti as you can imagine - you can’t deny that these two artists have interpreted the brief in very different ways. Beth’s depiction of 12th Century Queen of Mann, Affrica of Galloway, looking out to sea and a modern day Fenella on the opposite side share the same pose, featuring the same colours and similar patterns – connected down through the centuries. The end panels feature historical and contemporary stylised views of and from Ramsey, connected by the extremely life-like cats! At the other end of the promenade Adam Berry has chosen to celebrate the sporting side of Ramsey - the skate park, the BMX track and the always popular Ramsey Sprint which takes place along this very part of the prom during TT and MGP. Unlike Beth, Adam has chosen not to use a protective varnish on his shelter: “The shelters face the Irish Sea so are bound to take a battering, but I’d like to be able to touch up any areas that need it so I’ve used weatherproof, UV-lightproof, outdoor paint. I’ve used this paint before, and it’s still holding up pretty well so I’m confident!” But there are four shelters on Mooragh Prom: “We were awarded funding for two shelters from the Arts Council,” says Juan McGuiness, “so we’re looking for sponsors for the others. If anyone reading this would like to make a donation you can contact me via Ramsey Town Commissioners.” “The Isle of Man Arts Council actively recognises and supports public art,” says Jane Corkill, Arts Development Manager, “and were delighted to support Ramsey Town Commissioners with this exciting initiative for the Promenade. The art brings colour and life to the shelters and encourages a sense of place, whilst also showcasing the outstanding talents of our BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
local artists. We are looking forward to more in the future!” And on that note you might have seen that back in August planning permission was granted for a painting on a gable end on the corner of Parliament Street and Christian Street. Ciara and David Kilgallon applied for a permission for a huge mural by Karolina Pawlowska to brighten what Ciara says is Ramsey’s ‘brilliant independent high street.’ Karolina’s floral design was inspired by the work of Manx writer Josephine Kermode, whose pen name was Cushag, which of course is the Manx national flower. “Cushag was heavily involved in the revival of Manx folk traditions,” explains Ciara, “and a big supporter of the local arts scene. What better way to honour her than to have this amazing piece of street art in Parliament Street, where she was born?” But an artwork of this size is not cheap and although the Arts Council has pledged a grant of £3,500 towards the project, Ciara has set up a crowdfunding page (https:// justgiving.com/crowdfunding/Ramseystreet-art) to raise a further £6,000 and give everyone chance be part of this incredible project. Meanwhile, and on a much smaller scale you can go on a Rhumbot hunt around Mooragh Park and in the surrounding streets. Over twenty Rhumbots (from the Manx for Ramsey, Rhumsaa, and robot, which the images resemble) have been painted around the town by an artist who prefers to remain anonymous. There are a couple of pictures here to give you an idea of what to look for, but to get you started, there’s one at pavement level outside Shakti Man, in Parliament Street. Above all, street art is public art - there to be enjoyed, appreciated, liked or even disliked by anyone. But whatever your views, Ramsey is slowly, quietly, aiming to become the street art capital of the Isle of Man – go and see for yourself!

‘IF IN DOUBT’ A BOOK WHICH DEFINITELY WON’T SEND YOU TO SLEEP

That story stayed with him and eventually he was able to volunteer his anaesthetist’s skills to work with surgical teams from all over the world not just curing cleft lips but other conditions. Sadly, although he was in the process of organising another trip early in 2020, Covid meant that like all similar projects it came to nothing and, he told me, there will be no more for him:

Confession here – I am an avid reader of books by medics aimed at non-experts. I ‘grew up’ (ha) watching medical dramas and soaps on TV not to mention pandemic binge-watching ‘true life’ medical programmes at the far reaches of streaming services. And now, as life gets back to what we’re told is normal, former Noble’s Consultant Anaesthetist Keith Wilkinson has published ‘If in Doubt’. It’s actually quite a hard book to categorise – part memoir, part case-study, part quite technical anaesthetist jargon-loaded text book – but as a whole, ‘If in Doubt’ is very readable. Keith’s career at Noble’s lasted 30 years (he only retired last year) and working in the only hospital on the Island meant he had to turn his hand to anaesthetics for every discipline from orthopaedics to paediatrics, across the ICU and trauma. But if you’re hoping to find the skeet on your own appendicectomy or your wife’s emergency caesarean you’ll be disappointed. My first question to Keith was whether or not there was a danger of someone recognising a story as their own. “I sincerely hope not, and I’ve tried very hard to prevent that happening particularly as the Island is so small and, of course ‘everyone knows everyone,’” he replies. “When it came to these case histories, I was very careful to anonymise them. I’ve not just worked on the Island, my training took me across the north of England, in various hospitals in Liverpool and Newcastle as well as two stints in the Isle of Man, first as a house officer and then eventually back as consultant. That’s a lot of hospitals, a lot of patients and a lot of case studies. But the stories, the examples themselves, are all true.” It’s almost impossible to believe that Keith didn’t keep diaries. His retelling of his medical student days in Liverpool are so vivid you can believe you were there in the lectures, the pubs and, yes, with him doing resits of vital exams – those memories are unflinchingly honest. He also talks about the changes in medical training – some of which you get the feeling he doesn’t quite approve of – and in particular the advances in anaesthesia even during his life-time, for which anyone who’s been asked to count backwards from 100 and then woken up in the recovery ward should be grateful. One particularly interesting chapter covers Keith’s volunteer work in Ecuador and the Philippines. This came, indirectly, from an account on children’s’ programme Blue BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

“I told my last patient in Noble’s that he’d be the last person I ever anaesthetised, and I wrote an email to my colleagues saying that although it’s a ‘Manx tradition’ that when people leave the hospital after a leaving do – or three! - it is almost guaranteed they will be back again very soon, I’d be a hypocrite if I did this. “My speciality moves on so quickly,” Keith continues, “and I knew that with the best will in the world once I’d retired, and got out of the ‘game’ I couldn’t safely use my skills, however much I’d like to. For me, retirement is exactly that, retirement.” ‘If in Doubt’ is not Keith’s first book – that honour goes to ‘Manx Murders’, a collection of gripping and mysterious murder cases committed on the Island over the last 150 years – but it will, he says, be his last.
Writing ‘If in Doubt’ was quite cathartic, an opportunity to retell my life in anaesthesiology, at a time when not only had I just retired but Covid restrictions meant I couldn’t do much else,” he says. “But I’m not sitting idle – retirement means I have time to enjoy my grandchildren but also my other love, my guitar.” And on that note (sorry!) it would be remiss not to mention that not only does Keith have ‘If in Doubt’ out now (£8.99) and available at all good bookshops and as an e-book, but he’s also recorded an album of acoustic covers ‘Changing Moods’ to raise money for Breast Cancer Now. That CD (£5) will soon be available at the hospital, and also at the Bridge Bookshops in Ramsey and Port Erin. Profits from ‘If in Doubt’ will go to the NSPCC, and the £5 cover price of Keith’s CD will go in full to Breast Cancer Now, in honour of his daughter Cara Qualtrough who herself was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago.

Workplace wellbeing How Zurich employees benefit from Isle Listen partnership Leading mental health and wellbeing charitable initiative, Isle Listen, is celebrating the first 12 months of a three year partnership with the Z Zurich Foundation and Zurich International. It’s a ground-breaking partnership to promote positive mental health and wellbeing in schools across the Island. The collaboration is also bringing additional benefits to Zurich International employees. Here are seven personal stories which show how businesses and third sector organisations working together can be mutually beneficial for all concerned. Nigel Simpson, Head of International Markets, Zurich International and an Isle Listen Board Member Q: Why does Zurich partner with third sector organisations such as Isle Listen? A: Removing the stigma regarding mental health, and having conversations both in the office and the community about how to achieve that, is really important to us and Isle Listen. That’s the main reason why we forged a partnership with Isle Listen to improve mental health on the Isle of Man. Q: What is your personal involvement with Isle Listen? A: When I was asked to become a Board Member of Isle Listen I felt it was really important because it was growing from being a well-run, but small, third sector organisation into being one that was more strategically important to the Isle of Man, so I welcomed the opportunity to add my skillsets to the Board.
Q: What has Isle Listen achieved in the last 12 months? A: Despite the immense challenges and disruption to the school year caused by the pandemic, the Isle Listen team have done fantastic work by reaching over 11,000 students, organising 139 group sessions and just under a thousand one to one sessions. They have also organised 95 workplace training courses attended by 2,747 people – Zurich International is one of 30 organisations that have so far benefitted from mental health and wellbeing training. There are still two years remaining in the Isle Listen partnership that is being supported by the Z Zurich Foundation and Zurich International, but in a challenging first 12 months the Isle Listen team have made a great start.

Q: What makes Isle Listen a suitable local grant partner for the Foundation?
A: It’s a charitable foundation funded by various members of the Zurich Insurance Group [the global insurance business which includes Zurich International] and the main vehicle by which Zurich delivers on its global community investment strategy. We unite NGOs, governments, businesses and local heroes to work with those most in need, and equip Zurich employees to become activists in their communities through improving mental wellbeing, enabling social equity, or adapting to climate change. We’re supporting many projects worldwide which aim to break down the social stigma around mental health so that more people who are suffering will feel able to speak out about it.
A: Isle Listen’s aim for everyone in the Isle of Man to feel emotionally empowered and effectively supported with their mental health is shared by the Z Zurich Foundation. We know there is a growing need to help children and young people – here on the Island and elsewhere – so Isle Listen’s vital work to reach out to school pupils and students was perfectly aligned to the Foundation’s broader objectives. We believe the key to creating a better future is connection – fostering relationships between those in the know and those most in need and together tackling society’s challenges from the ground up, which is exactly what the relationship with Isle Listen achieves.

Q: How does having an employer that supports positive mental health & wellbeing help you day to day? A: As an employee, having that resource is massive. It’s good to know that there’s always someone there to talk to – whether it’s an issue about work related stress, life stress or literally anything else – and that they can understand what you are going through and signpost the most appropriate resource. It’s invaluable, and I think more places should have a resource like that. Q: Do you think that support helps the business when recruiting? A: Yes, it does – and I think the pandemic especially has brought a lot of things to the forefront of people’s minds regarding work/life balance. Choosing an employer which has a proactive wellbeing programme has become more important when people are looking for places to work. Whereas most employees may have previously been attracted to the salary or career opportunities offered by an employer, I’m not sure that’s so prevalent any more. More people now want to have a good work/life balance, and to come into work and not feel stressed. So working somewhere that has a proactive wellbeing programme, and you know that you are being supported, is really important and it helps to be an employer of choice. If a business can say we care and we value our employees, why wouldn’t you want to go and work for an organisation like that?
Q: How does the collaboration with Isle Listen complement Zurich International’s broader community strategy here on the Island? A: Firstly, it’s amazing to support such a fantastic third sector organisation. This early intervention service is so important, and even more so when you bear in mind what the pandemic has thrown at us during the last 18 months. As a business we’re really keen to support initiatives like this and remove any stigma attached to mental health. We’re also a keen supporter of Junior Achievement which complements the work that Isle Listen is doing with young people as part of our collaboration. We are delighted to support both organisations’ work which is helping to enable the younger generation to learn and develop life skills.

A: I’ve learned how to spot the signs which show when someone is struggling with their mental health. I’m one of 12 Mental Health First Aiders at Zurich International who come from a variety of roles so that everyone in the business knows someone that they can approach, if they need help. Q: How have the skills and knowledge you gained enabled you to help colleagues? A: I’ve been able to identify when colleagues need support, and then direct them to the most appropriate resources. Before the training I wasn’t able to spot the slight changes in people’s behavior, or what it meant – but now I can. Being able to support colleagues and see the improvements in their mental health is very rewarding.
Q: How have Zurich staff responded to the collaboration with Isle Listen? A: We’ve provided a lot of extra support for managers regarding mental health awareness which I think has been really important. Again that’s about helping them to spot early intervention signs, and we’ve had support with that from Isle Listen too. Our staff are very receptive to all the collaborative work we’re doing with Isle Listen. There is much more awareness and discussion about mental health now – particularly in the workplace – and the fact that we have been so visible about it is seen really positively.

niversity College Isle of Man’s (UCM) Higher Education ceremony was held at the Villa Marina, Douglas to recognise the academic achievements of UCM and UK graduates. 115 higher education students from UCM achieved their degrees and higher technical qualifications this year. With a staggering 82% of UCM students BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
studying at degree level achieving a First Class or Upper Second-Class honours degree, compared to 79% of UK graduates who achieved the same grades (Higher Education Statistics Agency 2019/20). Each year, UCM select an individual to be awarded the title of Honorary Fellow, an accolade which recognises those who commit time and effort in supporting the vision of UCM and those who have achieved outstanding work within their own field or the community. With over 25 years of experience in the field of music, Dr Peter Litman, Director of Music and Organist at St Germans Cathedral, Peel, was selected this year. Dr Litman said, “I feel immensely proud to receive this year’s Honorary Fellowship from UCM. Music is so strong and important to our Island community, and I believe that universities are the most important institutions in our society. They are the one place where art and truth have freedom, uninfluenced by the commercial and political world. To receive an honour from such a place should be treasured”. The evening saw virtual speeches from Professor Helen O’Sullivan, Deputy Vice Chancellor from the University of Chester, and last year’s honorary fellow, Professor Peter Edge, whilst Chief Minister, Hon Howard Quayle MHK opened the event and Jo Pretty, UCM Principal closed. Surprise guest and world-renowned actor, John Rhys-Davies, addressed the graduates with a motivational speech which detailed the importance of having self-confidence and treating others with kindness. The 2021 Student of the Year award was presented to Isobel Jagus, BN (Hons) Mental Health Nursing for her outstanding academic achievements and excellent attendance. Isobel has just commenced her preceptorship as a full time duly registered mental health nurse. The event also saw local restaurants show their support by offering various discounts and reductions for graduates and their families to enjoy and continue the celebrations after the ceremony. Businesses included: Coast Bar & Brasserie, Jaks Bar & Smokehouse, The Ocean Views, JC’s Bar & Restaurant and Bonds Restaurant. Over 20 Manx graduates, who achieved their awards at UK based universities and have been unable to attend their own ceremonies due to covid-19 disruptions, were once again invited to celebrate with their family and friends; adding to the true spirit of the Isle of Man as one community. Jo Pretty, UCM Principal, said “We recognise that our graduates have been fortunate to be supported and nurtured by those around them. The most pressing debate at the moment is to achieve sustainability for our planet, but it is also important to remember the difference our graduates can make in sustaining the health, resilience and adaptability for themselves and those around them in a fast-changing world. TRANSFORMATIONS Businesses that stay relevant and thrive in the modern world are those that adapt to its relentless changes. Business transformations can take many forms - including the development of new products, services and business models – but not all are successful. This is our list of companies that completely changed their line of business activity and emerged stronger than ever. Netflix Thanks to Netflix, it’s difficult now to imagine a time before video was available on demand. What’s perhaps less well known is that Netflix was first founded in 1997 as a DVD rental company. In 2001, CEO Reed Hastings decided to take the company in a new direction and proposed they use a new technology to stream movies over the internet direct to screens at home. Over the next 10 years, customers were slowly converted from playing physical DVDs to streaming. Today the company is worth a staggering $228 billion and boasts over 209 million subscribers in almost 200 countries worldwide.
The Walt Disney Company Disney has captured the imagination of children and families since 1923, but there was a time near the beginning when the magic of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse started to wane. To survive, Disney needed to expand its offering beyond films. It’s a trick the 97-year-old media giant has performed time and again over the years and today its portfolio of business includes a plethora of products and services from theme parks, cruise ships, retail stores, streaming services – not to mention the seemingly inexhaustible list of groundbreaking films, from Snow White to Black Panther.

Ørsted In 2012, Denmark’s largest energy company, Danish Oil and Natural Gas, was in deep trouble. The price of gas had plunged by 90% but rather than attempting to ride out the storm, they did something remarkable: the company divested itself of all fossil fuels. This radically changed the business model and from this point, the firm today known as Ørsted had begun to reinvent itself as a renewable energy company - a feat few other energy companies would be able to accomplish. Today Ørsted’s net profits have increased by $3 billion, making it the world’s largest offshore wind company, with a hand in about a third share of the global growth market. Lego In 1932, a Danish Carpenter founded a company to sell small wooden toys and simple plastic building bricks. Very soon Lego was beloved by children from all over the world and from 1932 to 1998 the company never reported a financial loss. Tencent This Chinese technology giant was first formed in 1998 as an online messenger and video game producer. Within the next 2 decades however, Tencent transformed itself into an all-round technology business with presence in a variety of industries, including entertainment, cloud computing and Fintech. In recent years, the company has even overtaken Facebook to become the world’s most valuable social networking company – thanks to its development of WeChat, China’s most popular messaging app. Nintendo Nintendo was founded in 1889 as a company selling hand-painted playing cards. The cards proved to be enormously popular and eventually became the most popular brand in Japan. Ninendo then used this success to try out other business ventures including ramen noodles, taxi services, hotels and video games. The pivot to gaming was of course the most successful. Today Nintendo rakes in billions of dollars every year from its array of consoles and fan favourite games – like Super Mario and Animal Crossing.
DBS In 2009, DBS was underperforming greatly as a traditional bank and losing traction. In a radical turnaround strategy, the company decided to go digital to keep up with the modern customer’s needs and this was long before the Covid-19 pandemic happened. Such forward thinking has led to DBS being dubbed the ‘World’s Best Bank’ by some for its reliability, agility and security. Today it is a powerhouse and the largest bank by assets in Southeast Asia. Microsoft For a time Microsoft had a monopoly: there was ‘a computer on every desk, and in every home, running Microsoft software’. With the arrival of cloud computing and smart phones however, they floundered - it seemed that the corporation would struggle to stay in operation for much longer. However, a startling transformation was achieved by bringing greater capabilities to other operating systems from competitors like Apple and Google and also developing its own cloud-based services. Overnight Microsoft had reclaimed its place as one of the world’s most valuable publicly traded companies - Lazarus was back from the dead.

oD Isle of Man Director of the Year Awards 2021 were hosted in the elegant surroundings of Woodbourne House on Tuesday 2ndNovember. Over 140 senior business leaders and members of the wider business community gathered to celebrate the success, talent and leadership on island across all sectors. Chair Jennifer Houghton opened the event by welcoming His Excellency Lieutenant General Sir John Lorimer KCB DSO MBE, former minister and guests. Jennifer highlighted the calibre of entries and offered thanks to the judges for their time, enthusiasm and debate on judging day. Special thanks were noted to the headline sponsor Appleby and award/ supporting sponsors Ravencroft, The International Stock Exchange, Crowe Isle of Man LLC, Lloyds Bank, KPMG and RS Marketing & PR all of whom contributed to the event success. His Excellency gave an uplifting speech which was well received by the audience. Geoff Corkish acted as compere throughout the award presentation and thoroughly entertained the guests. The winners were named as IoD Isle of Man Director of the Year Large Business Award Mark Bartlett – STRIX Group Plc. Jennifer Houghton presented the award on behalf of the award sponsor The International Stock Exchange and in a surprise twist Sir John accepted the award on Mark’s behalf in his absence! Global private wealth and professional services provider, Equiom, has 18 offices globally and employs 160 people here on the Isle of Man. The Equiom brand was established in 2006, but the business itself dates back to 1978 and has long been a big employer on the Island. Many of Equiom’s staff have been with the business for decades, working their way up through the ranks, and some have even welcomed their offspring into the fold. RELATIVE VALUES Nina Johnston, Managing Director of Equiom’s Isle of Man operations, originally joined Equiom in 2005 and was appointed to the Board in 2013. She now takes responsibility for the overall operation and performance of the business and leads experienced teams spanning fiduciary services, tax, operations, legal, compliance, yachting and aviation. Nina’s daughter, Alex, joined Equiom in June 2021 on a summer placement before

planning to return to university to study physiotherapy. At the same time, Alex was diagnosed with PoTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) linked to contracting Covid in 2020 and as a result has deferred her studies until she is fit enough for uni life! Taking a 12-month contract as an Assistant Associate, Alex is enjoying working on a varied portfolio and learning the role of the fiduciary for wealthy clients.

ith fibre broadband now accessible to more than 50% of premises on the Isle of Man, Manx Telecom reveals how businesses are using the technology to improve their operations and their customer experience It’s true to say there is a lot invested in the current fibre broadband rollout programme. Not just in terms of money, although the £50m+ investment from Manx Telecom and the additional £11.5m from the Isle of Man Government to complete the National Broadband Plan of 99% premises passed by fibre by the end of 2024 are considerable enough. Strategically, the rollout is intended to catapult the Isle of Man into the top 10 jurisdictions for broadband speed, ensuring the Island remains an attractive location that meets the needs of both businesses and residents in future years. It’s this potential to help businesses – and, ultimately, people – thrive and prosper that makes fibre such an exciting proposition for ventures of any scale. While some are switching simply for increased speed and reliability, other businesses are taking up the technology to enable them to use other enabling solutions such as virtual switchboards, virtual marketplaces and super-efficient, carefree streaming. Here’s a snapshot of how some local businesses are already using fibre broadband to make a difference: Cycle 360 One of the early adopters was Cycle 360 who were looking for technology to

support their holistic approach to health and fitness and allow them to seamlessly manage the different needs of their café/ bikeshop/fitness centre business model. Fibre answered their need for a great Wi-Fi experience – both for the business and its customers – and allowed for the adoption of a fast and easy cloud-based payment solution. The fibre broadband also supports the five smart TVs located around the building which allow Cycle 360 to stream live cycle races and other sports events, and the installation of Intelligent Voice, a Voice-over-Internet-Protocol-based virtual switchboard that delivers a wide range of telephony services that can be expanded easily as businesses grow. With features such as remote working, voicemail to email messaging, autoattendant, call pick up and hunt groups, Cycle 360 can easily manage the different parts of its business without the need to invest in expensive hardware and save on call costs.
Games Central With a business that depends on live streaming to 18 games consoles at the same time, it was clear that fibre broadband would be the way forward for Games Central, the Island’s first esports venue located at the Ellan Vannin Hotel. Not only is it critical that players can enjoy games without any interruption or lag in service, the business also needs to be able to accommodate the latest video games and run 18 live Twitch accounts simultaneously. This has been achieved with the installation of two Lightning Fast fibre broadband circuits. Not only is this an affordable solution that does not impact the ON THE AGENDA
hotel’s existing internet service but ensures uninterrupted play and the bandwidth to cope with the streaming of multiple highpowered fast-action games. From traditionally being a manual workshop, Talbots have now ventured into semi-automatic production processes. Some of the controls are driven by the machines themselves; sending the fabric and hardware cutting instructions directly from computer to the new table, which reduces the possibility of human error and also provides a higher quality finish to their blinds.
The three-storey building holds a vast showroom as well as a workshop where they also manufacture their own vertical, roller and roman blinds, as well as curtains.

For the owners of Kilravock the journey to own this beautiful home is a passion and started some time ago, working closely with, and taking the advice of Island Escapes whilst the property was very much a building site. This was all done in order to create the perfect lifestyle holiday home. Local builder Dave Corrin Developments & his team completed the property in May this year, to exacting requirements from the owners. The team worked extremely hard, enduring the difficulties of three lockdowns whilst ensuring the property was completed in time for its first summer season. The owners said: “It was a real pleasure and an example of how fun these projects can be. Thank you once again and hopefully this won’t be the last one!” Further to the owners distinctive ideas
and view throughout the project, they wished to engage as much local expertise as possible. For example, custom local stone from Pooil Vaaish, was used both inside and out with the seaside garden designed and landscaped by Jane Prescott of Prescott Associates and supplied by Nick Watson of Watson’s Nurseries. Local artists Kim Gee and Kate Summerville have also left their mark on the property with Kim designing the Kilravock logo and Kate’s inspiring fish artwork taking pride of place inside the property. As well as Matt Owen of Husly Ltd, who commissioned the desktop that beautifully blends into the house architecture. A favourite feature is the freestanding copper bath supplied by Southern Plumbing & Heating merchants and installed by Pure Plumbing who did an excellent job installing a modern plumbing system throughout the property. ANGELICA BELLE CLASSIC CARS, CLASSIC SERVICE When future generations ask ‘what did you do in the pandemic?’ I’m guessing the number of us who admit to binge-watching Below Deck* will be larger than those who took advantage of lockdowns to start their own ‘lifestyle’ brand. But that is exactly what Chef Andrea and husband, yacht Captain Chris have done - after 20 plus years at sea, theyhave launched Angelica Belle from their fisherman’s cottage at Fistard, Port St Mary. “We’d been fortunate enough to be based on a private yacht in the Caribbean & Mediterranean for the last eight years,”says Chris, “and once the owner decided to sell up, we realised it was the right time to change tack and become land-lubbers again. We hadn’t banked on Covid - who had? - but various lockdowns and the need to be fully vaccinated brought us home to Fistard at just the right time to perfect the Angelica Belle idea.” So what exactly is Angelica Belle? Chris explains the ‘lifestyle’ premise to me. “Our time at sea and running an awardwinning hotel and restaurant in the west country brought us in contact with some very distinguished clients,” he says,“who demanded the best all the time - the best experiences, the best food, the best service and above all total discretion.And that is what Angelica Belle offers.” Angelica Belle is actually named after the couple’s two classic cars, fondly referred to as the Brand’s Ambassadors, an Austin Healey BN1 1954 and a MG TC 1948 –

which illustrate the brand perfectly. “We moved to the Island 20 years agoand used our cottage as our base all the time we were at sea,” explains Chris. “Once we’d bought Angelica and Belle we realised what a joy it was to explore the Island’s stunning beauty and quirkiness by road and as our idea for a lifestylecompany solidified we knew we had to capitalise on that. The classic cars epitomise everything we stand for: quality,classic bespoke high-end service. “All over the world people are able to access exciting, unique and personalised experiences and Angelica Belle can now offer the same in the Isle of Man.” Chris goes on to explain further. “TT, the Manx Classic, the MGP are aimed at a very specific market. Part of the Angelica Belle offering is Chef Andrea’s cookery demonstrations in their Fistard kitchen. “I’ve been fortunate enough to work in some of the most glamorous locations in the world, from Bermuda to Mustique, worked as the in-house chef for a Mayfair Fashion House, owned and operated my own award winning restaurant and been a private Chef to a number of VIPs,” says Andrea. “I’ve always concentrated on creating beautiful and imaginative cuisine and now with Angelica Belle I’m able to demonstrate this to small groups in a relaxed setting.” But it’s not just cookery experiences. Ingredients: (Makes 18-24) For the choux pastry: n 85g unsalted butter n 225ml water n Pinch of salt n 50g plain flour n 50g strong white flour (to make gluten free, swap both plain and strong white flour for 100g gluten-free flour plus ¼tsp xanthan gum) n 2–3 medium eggs n For the Irish cream liqueur filling: n 480ml double cream n 4tbsp icing sugar n 1tbsp Irish cream liqueur For the vanilla icing: n 200g icing sugar n 40–50ml water n ½tsp vanilla bean paste For the royal icing: n 20g egg white (substitute with aquafaba for a vegan version) n 112g icing sugar n Plus extra egg white (or aquafaba) and icing sugar to adjust and get the right consistency Plus: n Matchstick cookies or similar n Sprinkles n Orange and black food dyes (or more sprinkles) n Fondant, fruit, nuts, candy canes, etc for additional decoration (optional)
sheet. This time you will need 20 x 2.5cm circles (there will be some leftover choux so you can pipe extra if you like). 8. When the first batch of choux have finished baking, immediately turn them over and use a knife to pierce the base. This is so that the air inside has somewhere to escape, and also gives you a place to pipe in the filling. Bake the second batch of choux for 10 minutes at 200°C, then a further 10 minutes at 180°C. 9. Meanwhile, make the Irish cream filling. Add all the ingredients to a clean, greasefree bowl and whip on mediumhigh speed until stiff enough to pipe and hold its shape. Don’t overwhip. Transfer the whipped cream to a piping bag and cut a small tip. 10. Pipe the cream into the cooled choux buns through the hole created earlier, making sure each one is filled completely. Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. 2. To make the choux pastry, chop the butter and add it to a small saucepan with the water and salt. Heat until the butter has melted and the mixture is starting to bubble. Meanwhile, combine both flours (or glutenfree flour plus xanthan gum) in a separate bowl. When the butter mixture is bubbling, remove it from the heat and add the flours all in one go. Stir with a wooden spoon until it forms a smooth ball that pulls away from the sides very easily – this is called a panada. 3. Transfer the panada to a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment (or use a handheld electric whisk) and leave to cool for five to 10 minutes. 4. Add two eggs, one at a time, to the panada, mixing on slow speed after each addition until combined. Whisk a third egg in
a separate bowl and gradually add one tablespoon at a time, mixing well after each addition. You may not need to add the third egg, or you may need to add a little or all of it. It’s important to add it gradually to avoid having a batter that is too runny. You are looking for a glossy consistency, which leaves a ‘v’ when a spoon is lifted out of the dough. 5. Transfer to a piping bag and cut a medium tip. Line two baking sheets with baking paper or a silicone mat, then pipe 20 x 3cm circles onto one of the baking sheets. 6. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes, then turn the oven down to 180°C and bake for a further 20 minutes. Don’t open the oven until at least 25 minutes have passed, to avoid the choux pastry deflating. 7. Meanwhile, pipe a second batch onto the other baking
11. To make the vanilla icing, whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl, then spoon the icing over the top of each choux bun. Stack the smaller choux bun on top of the larger one. 12. Decorate with Matchstick cookie arms and sprinkles for buttons. These will stick if you add them before the icing sets but use a little extra if needed. 13. For the facial features, making royal icing. Use a stand mixer (or handheld electric whisk) fitted with a balloon whisk attachment to combine the egg white/aquafaba and icing sugar until you get a smooth consistency. Then add tiny amounts of extra egg white (or aquafaba) and/or icing sugar to get the right consistency. Add black and orange dye for the facial features, or use sprinkles. You can also use nuts, fondant or fruits to create accessories for their heads.

BACK TO BASICS: FAT In my last article, ‘Back to Basics’, I covered the first of our 3 food groups, Carbohydrates. In this edition, I will cover fat. I’ll start by saying, ‘FAT is GOOD’, ‘NO FAT diets are BAD’. You need adequate amounts of good fat in your diet for optimum health. Fats are essential for maintaining health, especially as you get older. Fat provides energy, protects your organs and supports many important functions in the body. It keeps blood pressure under control, helps maintain a healthy cholesterol balance and is essential for the absorption and storage of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin D. Fat has had a bad reputation in recent years with an explosion of ‘Low Fat’ and ‘Fat Free’ products. If you focus on cutting out all fat, you can actually deprive your body of this essential food group.

‘Partially Hydrogenated’. If a food contains these fats, don’t buy it. Unsaturated Fat. This is the healthy kind of fat and there are two types: Monounsaturated Fat and Polyunsaturated Fat. Monounsaturated fats are found in avocados, peanut butter, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, pecans and in seeds, such as pumpkin, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds. It is also found in healthy plant oils, such as olive oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, sesame seed oil amongst others. Monounsaturated fats, in the right quantities are very beneficial for health.

There are two types of fat in our diets Saturated Fat and Unsaturated Fat. Saturated Fat: This is often labelled as “bad” fat. It’s primarily found in animal products like beef, pork, and high-fat dairy foods, such as butter, margarine, cream, and cheese. High amounts of saturated fat also are found in many fast foods and processed foods such as, pizza, desserts, ready meals, cookies and pastries. These fats tend to be more “solid” (for example butter or lard or the fat you see on the side of a steak) than healthier fats, which are typically liquid. Your body can digest and use saturated fat but the amount of it consumed through your diet should be limited to only small amounts. Consuming high amounts of saturated fat produces more LDL (bad) cholesterol, which can contribute to the formation of plaque in the arteries and increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Trans Fats are a type of saturated fat (sometimes called hydrogenated fats): Trans fats are formed through an industrial process that adds hydrogen to vegetable oils. This process causes the oil to become solid at room temperature and changes the molecular structure of the oil making it very difficult for the body to assimilate. Because it’s cheap to manufacture in large quantities and has a longer shelf-life, it is often used instead of butter and other natural fats to keep food production costs down. It is found in may processed foods and cheap confectionary. Trans fats are ‘extremely damaging to the body’ and in some countries are completely banned in food production. The safe amount of trans fat in the diet is ZERO. They should be avoided at all costs and are a major contributor to heart disease and stroke. They are sometimes hard to spot on food labels as they are listed as saturated fat but look out for the words ‘Hydrogenated’ or

Polyunsaturated fats include omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids. Polyunsaturated fats are found in plant-based oils like soybean, corn, and safflower oils, and they’re abundant in walnuts, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, and fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, tuna, and trout. In particular, omega-3 fatty acids are very beneficial for health. They help lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation in the body and slow the development of plaque in the arteries. The support normal brain function and hormone balance and they help reduce the likelihood of heart attack and stroke and lessen the chance of sudden cardiac death in people with heart disease. The Final Word on Fat The main health issue with dietary fats is how they influence cholesterol levels. High amounts of saturated fat produce more LDL (bad) cholesterol, which can form plaque in the arteries and increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. In comparison, unsaturated fats help to raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels. HDL picks up excess LDL in the blood and moves it to the liver, where it is broken down and discarded. You want to have a high HDL-toLDL ratio, and unsaturated fats can help with this. It’s not enough to just eat more unsaturated fats. You also have to cut down on the unhealthy saturated fat and completely remove all trans fats from your diet. Consuming more unsaturated fats can significantly lower your risk of heart disease, especially if the healthy unsaturated fat replaces saturated fat. However, any benefit from consuming more unsaturated fats may be negated if you continue to consume too much saturated fat. Armed with this information, you can now make better ‘Fat’ choices and reap the long-term health benefits for you and your family. The new Range Rover has arrived, bringing with it a predictably luxurious take on the SUV recipe. Packed with technological advancements, the new Range Rover looks set to be the most futuristic to date, while a series of plug-in hybrid powertrains – alongside traditional petrol and diesel
options – means that it’s more electrified than ever. But the Range Rover’s job isn’t an easy one. There are more rivals for it than ever, so let’s dive in and check out what this latest Range Rover is up against.
1. Bentley Bentayga The Bentayga has proved to be a real hit for Bentley, encapsulating the luxury feel of the firm’s saloon and coupe models but in a highriding SUV bodystyle. Much like the new Range Rover, it’s available with a traditional petrol engine but also a plug-in hybrid option, giving zero-emissions running at lower speeds. Bentley recently added a more sporty ‘S’ version too, kitted out with a powerful 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. 2. BMW X7 The X7 sits at the top of BMW’s SUV range, effectively sitting as a high-riding version of the firm’s luxurious 7 Series saloon. It’s a hard car to miss, too, with its ultra-large front kidney grilles giving it a whole lot of presence out on the road. It’s also got space for seven, so it does have a focus on practicality too. With a huge amount of interior space, it’s a real comfortable choice for longer journeys. 3. Mercedes-Benz GLS The GLS is the largest SUV Mercedes offer and is, in fact, one of the largest SUVs on sale today. It’s fitted with some of the firm’s latest technology, too, including a superb MBUX infotainment operating system, accessed via a pair of 12.3-inch screens set underneath one single piece of glass to create a full widescreen effect. It’s also supremely comfortable, while the option of a range-topping GLS63 adds a performance variant for those who want it. 4. Audi Q8 Though we could opt for the popular Q7 in this list, it’s the Q8 that stands out in Audi’s range of SUVs. Bringing a coupe-like design, the Q8 looks really futuristic out on the road, with its full-width rear light bar giving the car a really cool appearance at night. It’s just as futuristic inside too, with a good range of materials ensuring that the Q8 feels particularly upmarket. 5. Aston Martin DBX Aston’s first SUV – the DBX – has really made waves, delivering a sporting driving experience alongside a level of quality that you’d expect from the firm. Both comfortable and involving, the DBX is a car capable of making a twisty road fun while also taking the backache out of longer journeys. And toys that work in the bath always get extra brownie points in our book. 2. Bluey Family Home Playset, £39.99 Why is it brilliant? Bluey, for those who don’t know, is from the animated TV series on CBeebies and Disney+ and here, the Blue Heeler pup comes complete with his own home. Open-fronted, with 10 accessories like chairs and beds, little ones can play out scenes inside the house. The bottom half also shuts up, which will help with tidying up and keeping mess at bay. Who’s it for? Aimed at children over three-years-old, fans of the show will enjoy bringing Bluey to life.

Would we buy it? Honestly, we prefer our dolls’ houses made of wood and slightly prettier, but we can see the appeal for regular Bluey watchers.

3. Cocomelon Deluxe JJ Interactive Doll, £39.99 Why is it brilliant? One of the best things about this toy is it’s a doll which is also a boy, and though that’s not unheard of, it is ridiculously rare. Big in size (think My Generation Doll), you can feed him food, undress and dress him, and he sings songs and makes a cute baby giggle sound. Who’s it for? Aimed at boys and girls over the age of two, any little one who enjoys playing babies and role play will love this.

4. Gassy Gus, £24.99 Why is it brilliant? The only game to make it into the top 12, Gassy Gus is a greedy man. Players take it in turns to feed Gus with a foodie card, each of which has a number on it. You then have to pump his head the number of times written on that card, which inflates his stomach. Once he gets full, he lets out a big fart and a chuckle, and whoever made him do that has to pick up cards. The first player to get rid of all their cards wins.

Who’s it for? Aimed at families aged four and upwards, it’s a quick and easy game to play, which will make little ones laugh. Would we buy it? We wouldn’t be averse to it, if only to hear small people laughing their heads off at Gus’ farts. But we suspect it’ll have a relatively short shelf life in most homes. 5. Hot Wheels Massive Loop Mayhem, £54.99 Why is it brilliant? Anyone who’s experienced Hot Wheels gameplay knows how many hours can be wiled away seemingly doing the same thing over and over again. As the name suggests, this set forms a huge loop, which comes with a motor and a booster, to enable the biggest car smash-ups possible. Who’s it for? Aimed at over fives, we suspect the perfect receiver of this set will be aged seven or eight, and their Christmas Day will be spent speeding round lots of loops. Would we buy it? If you’re looking for something that will entertain for hours, without you necessarily having to get involved, this will certainly do the job. But it is big, so you’ll need plenty of space to set it up. 6. Jurassic World Scorpios Rex, £31.99 Why is it brilliant? It’s a large-scale realistic dinosaur action figure, which rexloving kids can play with, while interacting with its moving parts. Press buttons to activate the roar, claw slash, tail whip and slash and grab attack. Who’s it for? It’s aimed at children over the age of four, but we suspect slightly older kids will be more likely to engage in the less-cutesy action role play, though possibly not anyone old enough to see the Jurassic World films. Would we buy it? Probably not. The dinosaur fans in our lives might like this, but it doesn’t have much buyer satisfaction.

7. L.O.L. Surprise Movie Magic Doll, £10.99 Why is it brilliant? The latest LOL range is somewhat sophisticated. The ‘movie magic’ theme definitely adds a touch of class. Encased in small round balls, each LOL doll comes with 10 surprises, including a secret message, 3D glasses, a fashion outfit and a movie script. Who’s it for? Any LOL fans will love this. Perfect for Christmas stockings, the outfits and diverse skin tones get a big tick from us (but it would be great to see a range of body shapes in the future, too). Would we buy it? Definitely. A great price and a lovely gift. 8. Little Live Pets My Pig Piggly, £24.99 Why is it brilliant? In case we haven’t bought enough pets during lockdown, Piggly is keen to become a member of your family. Feed, walk and nuzzle the pig while it squeals and snorts, playing over 25 sounds and reactions. And it has a very cute little trot. Who’s it for? Aimed at children over the age of four, any little one who fancies a pretend pet of their own will love this. Would we buy it? The music that plays while it walks is slightly annoying and the squeal is really quite loud, so on that basis, probably not. It would be a well loved but quite annoying toy to have in the house. 9. Magic Mixies Cauldron, £69.99 Why is it brilliant? If you’re looking for the wow factor, this is it. We would prefer the cauldron to be a little less plasticky, but the idea of mixing a potion, with which you create a magical creature (or soft toy)
10. Paw Patrol Chase’s Deluxe Transforming Vehicle, £44.99 Why is it brilliant? Paw Patrol is still going strong and fans of the show would happily own all the paraphernalia. Featuring Chase the dog, kids can push the car’s spoiler to armour up his Deluxe Vehicle, revealing a projectile launcher at the back, which shoots discs at the press of a button. Who’s it for? Paw Patrol fans aged three and over. Would we buy it? More plastic cars aren’t really high on our wishlist this year, but there’s no doubt show lovers will be delighted with it. 11. Pokemon 8” Plush Pikachu, £13.99 Why is it brilliant? Pikachu is always our favourite Pokemon character and this soft toy is made from super soft fabrics, which are perfect for cuddles and bedtime. Who’s it for? Suitable for kids over two, it’s a stocking filler for Pokemon fans. Would we buy it? No. Sadly, we don’t love Pokemon enough to spend nearly £15 on a small teddy. 12. Lego Star Wars Boba Fett’s Starship, £44.99 Why is it brilliant? You won’t find many people who don’t think Lego is brilliant, and this set, based on the Mandalorian series, won’t disappoint. Containing 593 pieces, this detailed version of Boba Fett’s Starship comes with stud shooters, rotating dual blaster cannons, Boba Fett and The Mandalorian LEGO mini-figures with weapons, a Carbonite brick and a transporter vehicle. Who’s it for? Step-by-step instructions mean kids of all ages can get involved, but it is a trickier build aimed at nine-year-olds and over. Would we buy it? Yes. We’re big Lego fans – it provides learning, play, quiet time, family togetherness and isn’t massively messy. Just don’t step on a brick barefoot…

This iconic building, once the home of Douglas’ Main Post Office, was designed by Architect Henry Tanner and built in 1886, which of course is where 1886 gets its name.
