BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

W

e live in an age of the makeover. If you’re not having your house destroyed in 60 minutes, facing botox to look 10 years younger, being bootcamped to hell in a competitive weight loss telethon - well - you’re just not trying. Googling makeover brings up a myriad of results, including such oddities as the Barbie website, where you can “create your own pinktastic makeover magazine cover with the Superstar Makeovers game”. Too many girls have probably strived to look like Barbie over the years, or some other impossible ideal body type. In real terms, Barbie would apparently only have room for half a liver and her ankles wouldn’t be able to support her own body weight, hardly a good look. On a real woman, Dita Von Teese probably has the smallest waist I have ever seen, aided by a corset, but you don’t see many women doing the weekly shop in one of those. Fashion has tried to satisfy our need for thin and curves in the right places by giving us bandage and optically illusive dresses, but more extreme measures have hit the mainstream in my lifetime, like skyrocketing cases of plastic surgery. I say: “What’s wrong with getting older?” Surely - like a good wine - we mature with age as we are shaped by our life experiences? Or, is it our maturity that we are running away from? A makeover doesn’t always relate to beauty, it can mean taking stock of other aspects of your life. So, make a change in your life for the better, make yourself smile, help others, what about looking closer to home, spend time with friends and family, it’s amazing how youthful you’ll look and feel when you spend quality time with loved ones. Best of all; it’s free, just like Gallery magazine.

This being Gallery’s ‘Makeover’ issue, we decided to take a look at some of our favourite instances of the phenomenon that is the celebrity rebrand. Not everyone in the public eye is capable of doing a complete U-turn; indeed, many are cursed to perform the same act over and over again for eternity, in a sort of purgatorial Groundhog Daystyle lifelong nightmare. Take Sid Owen, aka Eastenders’ Ricky Butcher. He was sick of being a miserable, pug-faced soap opera also-ran, and in 2000 embarked on a career as a pop star. One cod-reggae cover single later, he was back in Eastenders, only to leave, then return, then leave, then return, and then chuck the whole thing in and retire from acting. Of course, for every Ricky Butcher there’s a Charlene from Neighbours, who later came to be known as Kylie Minogue, and for every Bruce Forsyth (who has actually been a camp, doddering and slightly lecherous eighty-five year-old buffoon since 1912) there’s an Amy Winehouse, who went from slightly shy girl-next-door jazz singer to beehive-wearing tattooed tearaway and style icon. Pop culture is littered with examples of famous figures who have ditched their image, either intentionally or otherwise, and undergone drastic reinventions. Here are a few of our favourites:

RUSSELL BRAND

SNOOP DOGG

They say that the best pop culture icons are the ones that you don’t even have to see in full light to recognise; all you need to see is a silhouette to identify them instantly. Standup comic Russell Brand certainly seemed to have recognised that when he underwent his revamp in the mid-noughties. Going from a scruffy jeans, t-shirt and hoodie-wearing presenter of Big Brother’s Eforum in 2004 to, in his own words, an “S&M Willy Wonka”, Brand became a style icon, one of the world’s most bankable comedians, and his combination of John Cooper Clarke haircut, Pete Doherty wardrobe and heroin and sex addiction backstory only served to make him a favourite with the tabloids. To be fair, he was no stranger to controversy anyway, having been fired from his first presenting job with MTV in 2001, for dressing up as Osama Bin Laden the day after the September 11th attacks. But stories of drugs, high profile girlfriends, a charge for beating up a photographer in LA in 2010 and of course the notorious ‘Sachsgate’ scandal cemented his place as Hollywood’s go-to rock n’ roll comedy bad boy. It’s little wonder his highest profile acting roles so far have been in Get Him to the Greek, as a drug-addicted rockstar and as the titular boozy philanderer in Arthur. It’s certainly been an impressive re-Brand.

Calvin ‘Snoop Dogg’ Broadus shocked the rap world last year when he announced that he was swapping his guns n’ bling lifestyle for that of peace-loving Rastafarian reggae star, and wanted to be known from them on as ‘Snoop Lion.’ Having decided that he had outgrown the gangsta lifestyle that had made him famous but which had also brought him his fair share of pain and suffering with the loss of friends such as Tupac Shakur, gunned down in 1996, Snoop headed to the hallowed Tuff Gong Studios in Trenchtown, Jamaica, to undergo a spiritual transformation – and record a reggae album with producer Diplo and guests including Bunny Wailer. His reincarnation has not been without its critics though – Wailer, after initially embracing Snoop’s new life choice, has since renounced Snoop’s conversion to Rastafarianism, slamming his “outright fraudulent use of Rastafari Community’s personalities and symbolism.” Meanwhile, the catchily-titled Ethio-Africa Diaspora Union Millennium Council (aka Rastafari Millennium Council) told Snoop “smoking weed and loving Bob Marley and reggae music is not what defines the Rastafari Indigenous Culture!” It possibly doesn’t help that he continues to tour and record under the name Snoop Dogg… Then: Gun-toting gangsta rapper Now: Spliff-wielding, peace loving Rastafarian reggae star (sort of)

Then: Geeky, scruffy E4 presenter with a penchant for the controversial Now: A-list Hollywood comic with a famed penchant for the opposite sex

MARK WAHLBERG

Mark Wahlberg has technically had not one but two revamps of his image. To say that as a youth growing up Wahlberg was somewhat unruly is quite the understatement. A cocaine addict as a thirteen year old, a member of a Boston street gang as a teenager and charged with attempted murder at the age of sixteen, Wahlberg pledged to change his ways and reinvented himself as rapper Marky Mark, and with his band The Funky Bunch scored a string of chart hits in the early 90s. As Marky Mark, Wahlberg became as famed for his trademark washboard stomach as for his bad boy image, and became the face/abs of Calvin Klein, and a pin-up for pre-pubescent girls worldwide. Stage three of Wahlberg’s metamorphosis came when he embarked on an acting career, first earning plaudits opposite Leonardo Di Caprio in The Basketball Diaries before his breakthrough leading role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights. He has since been nominated for an Oscar for The Departed, been critically acclaimed for his portrayal of boxer Micky Ward in The Fighter, and enjoys a rarified status as both one of Hollywood’s highest earners and one of its most credible actors. That credibility is about to be put to the test however, as he takes up the lead role in Michael Bay’s upcoming and sure-to-be-boring Transformers sequel.

Then: All-American superhero cyclist Now: All-American cheating, bullying supervillain of the highest order

Then: Chart-topping 90s rapper and Calvin Klein model with a silly name Now: Academy Award-nominated star of the silver screen

LANCE ARMSTRONG

Hands up who found Lance Armstrong interesting and exciting back when he was the Usain Bolt of cycling? Yeah, not many of you. When he had yellow jerseys coming out of his ears as a ‘seven time Tour de France winner, full time cancer fighter’ (his description) and was the perfect all American hero, quite frankly, he was a boring sod. The sort of boring sod that gets filed next to other boring sods like Alan Shearer, Michael Owen and Gary Lineker – bland, somehow too perfect and also with an added dash of smugness just to top it off. However, when he finally owned up to the doping allegations that had hung over him for years, he underwent an instant transformation to sporting supervillain. If his battle against cancer and return to the sport was an inspirational story, the bombshell that Lance was actually a scheming, seemingly sociopathic cheat who had bullied fellow cyclists into partaking in the systematic use of performance enhancing drugs, was a thrilling twist. After all, who wants their heroes to be cleaner than clean and whiter than white? Everyone prefers Batman to Superman, and really, everyone actually prefers the Joker to Batman. In other words, we all love a bit of a bastard don’t we? N.B Gallery does not endorse the use of performance enhancing drugs or cheating in sport. Play nicely readers.

ONE OF THE BEST IN ITS 100 YEAR HISTORY - was how Manx Telecom Race Director Ray Cox described this year’s centenary event – and few who took part would disagree. Michael George was a popular winner after so many years of coming close to victory, but he was pushed all the way by second placed Richard Gerrard and Jock Waddington who was third. George’s time of 14h 44m 49s was the third fastest in the all-time list. Janice Quirk won the women’s race and finished sixth in the overall standings. Her time of 16h 16m 39s was the third fastest ever by a woman. Defending champion Sue Biggart was second, and Maureen Moffatt third.

Located in the heart of South Barrule plantation, the Sure Ape Mann Adventure Park has lots of exciting and challenging obstacles for everyone to try, man, woman, child or ape!

With Apple TV and iPads for clients’ use, Marco continues to heighten the bar and will soon launch the Utopia iPhone app.

If it’s an adrenaline rush you’re after…

The course is designed as a circuit within the plantation and consists of 20 different challenging activities, log walks, zip wires, flying carpets, balance posts, postman’s walk, a scramble net and balance beams. You can even have a race around the plantation on the off-road pedal go-karts! The adventure park also boasts the highest set of ‘Monkey’ tree climbs in the UK. The ‘Monkey’ tree climbing safety kit can be adapted with a variety of harnesses to allow children as young as six years old to have a go, while still providing a great challenge for adults. The Sure Ape Mann Adventure Park welcomes you as an individual or with your family and friends. The Park can be hired for birthday parties and corporate event team building challenges - that is - if you have the nerve to trust co-workers blindfolded!

An additional long zip wire is being made, ready for the school summer holidays. This zip wire will be 180m long, starting from a 5m high platform and running through a tunnel of trees - providing that adrenalin buzz - if you’re brave enough to take it on! MONKEY TREE CLIMB The ‘Monkey’ tree climbing hardware is proving very popular. With a 16m climb, it was built with various holds, some of them are more difficult than others. The park has a variety of harnesses - along with full body harnesses - to enable children as young as 4/5yrs of age to have a go in complete safety. Eric’s horn is at the top of the ‘Monkey’ tree, when you reach the top, give it a good old honk! Bouncing back down to earth is just as much fun!

And that’s not all

BLINDFOLDED CORPORATE EVENTS The ‘Monkey’ tree climb is also used for corporate team building events and team competitions with timed climbing, which is great for improving communication and motivation amongst co-workers. The blindfolded climbing challenge is brilliant for team building and bonding too, encouraging everyone to pull together. OFF-ROAD PEDAL GO KARTS The park also has 10 off-road pedal gokarts, suitable for adults and children who want to race around the forest tracks. You’ll need good legs to get the best out of them, great fun and a tough workout.

The park also has a number of other activities to conquer, which include - trapeze logs, a scramble net, balance beams and bridges.

Log walk A simple log walk next, ideal to re-build some confidence after that first challenge.

The swinging logs are more of a challenge. Two 8-foot logs suspended on ropes between the platforms. This can be quite a challenge. You need good balance and a steady nerve to get across.

Scramble net Get a foot hold on the Sure Ape Mann scramble nets. Be quick and watch out before others beat you to the top!

ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

One of the more difficult challenges on the course is The Postman’s Walk. This is one of the higher sections, as well as being one of the more technical challenges. You have to make your way through the ropes one foot at a time, balancing on small vertically supported logs. This one can really catch you out so you have to concentrate and watch your hands and feet at all times. It’s great fun and you’ll have a sense of achievement when you make it across!

Zip Wires

Monkey tree climb

The three zip wires within the family park are of different speeds. The second zip has a quick landing point on a platform built on the side of a tree. Kids and adults love the thrill of trying to hit that perfect landing when they touch down on the platform at some speed.

Then: Geeky, scruffy E4 presenter with a penchant for the controversial Now: A-list Hollywood comic with a famed penchant for the opposite sex

SNOOP DOGG

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

LANCE ARMSTRONG

MARK WAHLBERG

Then: All-American superhero cyclist Now: All-American cheating, bullying supervillain of the highest order

Then: Chart-topping 90s rapper and Calvin Klein model with a silly name Now: Academy Award-nominated star of the silver screen

GREAT RESULTS FOR EDGEWATER ASSOCIATES PEEL GOLF CLUB COMPETITIONS The Edgewater Associates sponsored golf competitions enjoyed remarkable success at Peel Golf Club over the past two weeks as 188 keen sportsmen and women competed under calm skies and over sun-drenched greens for some of the club’s oldest trophies. In the ladies competition, team-mates Christina Skelly and Amanda Woodward took home first place in the Millennium Shield on 30th May while in the men’s competition, Ray Hughes triumphed in the Ballagarraghyn Trophy the following weekend under perfect conditions on Saturday 8th June. Players were also given the opportunity to donate to the sponsor’s chosen charity, Manx Cancer Help, in order to enter the ‘nearest the pin’ competition on the 133 yard, par 3 10th, with all proceeds matched by competition sponsors, Edgewater Associates. Kevin Middleton just snook inside Island champion Paul Lowey’s effort in the men’s, while Dot Simpson beat off competition in the ladies’ round. Both competitions were then brought to a ceremonial close with refreshments followed by a prize presentation in Peel Golf Club’s main lounge. NOKIA LUMIA BUS AND CYCLE STUNTS LINED UP FOR ROYAL MANX SHOW Nokia Lumia Bus and cycle stunts lined up for Royal Manx Show A hi-tech bus packed with the latest Nokia gadgets and a world record breaking cycle stunt team will be star attractions at this year’s Royal Manx Agricultural Show with Manx Telecom. The title sponsors of the show are bringing both attractions to the event held on August 9 and 10 at Knockaloe Farm, Patrick. Nokia’s Lumia Roadshow Bus is effectively a mobile expo where anyone can go on board to try out the company’s full range of handsets and all the apps and accessories. It hit the road for the first time in March this year and is set to travel the length and breadth of Britain over the coming months, but it has never been to the Isle of Man before. The bus comprises a lower demo deck, where users can check out the latest Nokia Lumia smartphones and accessories, while upstairs there is a meeting room as well as a coffee lounge. Travelling with the Lumia Roadshow Bus will be a team of experts to demonstrate how the products work and answer questions. The UK-based 3Sixty cycle stunt team will also be making a debut appearance in the Isle of Man at the Royal Show. 3Sixty has more than a decade of experience performing BMX and MTB tricks at festivals, on TV shows and featuring in music videos. In that time their world class performers have broken several world records. Last year alone they set five world records including most rear wheel hops on a bike, highest 180 degree spinning bunny hop, and the longest platform to platform bunny hop. In addition to performing stunt displays the team will also pass on some of their skills to children who want to learn cycle tricks. The 3Sixty riders visiting the Island will be Chris Lambton, Alex Wray, and James Hyland – all three are experienced stunt performers who have entertained crowds across the UK and around the world. For more information about the show go to www.royalmanx.com, and go to www.3sixty.me.uk to see videos of the 3Sixty stunt team in action.

MAKEOVERS

Women changing what they are born with to gain the approval of the perceived "attractive people" like the presenter Myleene

THE SIMPLE ACT OF CHANGING SOMEONE’S APPEARANCE VIA THE WAY THEY DRESS, APPLY MAKEUP OR EVEN IMPROVING THEIR GENERAL HYGIENE IS USUALLY PORTRAYED IN A POSITIVE LIGHT. MAKEUP ARTISTS AND STYLE GURU'S WILL ARGUE THAT BY CHANGING THESE FACTORS, THE PERSON IN QUESTION WILL FEEL MORE CONFIDENT IN THEMSELVES AND BE HAPPIER BASED ON THE NOW IMPROVED JUDGEMENTS OF OTHER PEOPLE. THAT'S ALL WELL AND GOOD BUT WHERE IS THE LINE DRAWN? WHEN DO WE STOP SAYING "HERE IS A DRESS TO BETTER SUIT YOUR FIGURE" AND START SAYING "HERE IS A MORE ACCEPTABLE FACE TO SUIT YOUR BODY." WELL, NEWS FLASH; IT'S ALREADY HAPPENING.

Klass? This was seriously disturbing stuff in my opinion and although the argument would be the restoration of confidence and a better outlook on life, shows like "What not to wear" and "How to look good naked" achieve this without the use of surgery.

A QUICK ANECDOTE: The other day, I was flicking through the channels when I came across a show called "10 years younger." I thought it would be your bog standard Trinny and Suzanna type programme that aims to improve middle aged women's fashion sense and make them feel better about themselves as a result. Slightly shallow, but fair enough, I thought to myself. If dressing differently makes them feel happier day to day then who am I to judge? Good on them. However, that's when the episode took an unexpected and pretty dark turn. What started of as the woman in question being taken round the shops and getting style advice turned into what bordered on a tame horror film. We had gone from "10 years younger" to "Saw" territory. I was amazed as we got in close with the camera as the woman was taken into surgery to get work done to her face. I stopped and reflected. Really? Is this where society is right now? Is this where the idea of a "Makeover" has gone?

14

Ok, I admit it, I may have exaggerated with the "Saw" metaphor as not a lot was actually seen, but the fact that people actually are comfortable with the total change of someone just for the shallow respect of what is expected from the general public was a huge shock to me. I would like to make it clear that I have nothing against the aforementioned shows that use a change of fashion as a means to make people feel better about themselves. These shows are totally harmless and raise no alarm bells in my mind. The fact that they make people feel better is great and is even somewhat commendable as they do it simply by changing the materials that we wear often with impressive results. But the fact that a show like "10 years younger" can warp the idea of a makeover and make it necessary for people to distort their bodies for the camera makes feel a little bit sick inside. This is especially true when you consider the demographic that could be watching this show. I believe (please don't quote me) that if often airs around seven/eight o clock at night which is a prime time for young girls to be watching this with their mothers. Is this really the attitude to makeovers that we want young girls to take to makeovers? To have in their minds that for boys to like you, you should go to the nearest hospital asap and get a facelift? I don't think so. Rest assured, when I have children they will not be watching this programme.

OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS THERE’S BEEN A FRIENDSHIP DEVELOPING ‘OVER THE HEDGE’ AT HOME. MY SON AND THE LITTLE GIRL NEXT DOOR HAVE HIT IT OFF AND NOW THEY ARE BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS, MUCKING AROUND TOGETHER, BEAUTIFULLY, SPONTANEOUSLY. NOTHING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED, NO ‘PLAYDATE’ MADE; IT’S JUST HAPPENED AND IT CHEERS MY HEART. Much has been written in recent years about pressurized childhood. Our children are too busy, have too many things, are overloaded with information and are expected to ‘do’ rather than to ‘be’. Cue a recent mumsy conversation... “How many activities are your children doing? We have something after school every day; trying to keep the weekends free but even they are getting swallowed up now. And the cost of it all...” My school-age child is pretty shattered after a day of learning. We have two ‘scheduled’ after-school activities in the week and sometimes even they are a bridge too far. Are we expecting too much of our little ones? It’s a fine balance between activity, boredom and overload, and I confess to often tipping it in the wrong direction. If I’m honest, what they really need is downtime, time to be free, unstructured, spontaneous and, yes, bored. In 2012, the Evening Standard estimated that 474 million unused toys were simply gathering dust in British homes. If my playroom is anything to go by, I can well believe it. Since my children were born I feel as if I’ve been swimming against a tide of ‘more, more, more’. Much as I’ve tried to stem the flow of plastic and electronics entering our house, they are stealthily coming in at a higher rate than they are going; only a fraction of the ‘stuff’ gets played with. Last year, The Telegraph* interviewed a Mrs Goddard Blythe, director of the Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology in Chester, who said the consumer culture had “led to parents being seduced into thinking that the more they provide for their children in terms of material, electrical goods and, in turn, the more money they spend, the better parents they are”. Over-indulgent parents are shunning outdoor play ‘in favour of expensive gadgets’. The trouble is, not only are our children overloaded with information, so are we. Each weekend I grimace as I look at The Times’ latest article on parenting. Recently it warned us of the perils of ‘overparenting’; indeed there is a whole new lexicon of definitions to describe us in these anxious times. Are you a ‘helicopter parent’, perhaps, overly protective, unable to cut the umbilical cord? Or do you instead embrace the virtues of ‘simplicity parenting’. The following week we will be worried about the latest food scare, perhaps, or a supposed link between childhood vaccinations and mental development. The list goes on. No wonder we can feel like

18

rabbits caught in headlights at times. One response to this anxiety trend has been the stratospheric rise of the ‘Mummy Blog’. Sites such as simplemom.net and sewliberated.typepad.com exhort us to intentional, back-to-basics living, have a cult following and accompanying books. Type ‘simple parenting’ into your Amazon search, and titles such as ‘Fifteen Minutes Outside’, ‘Free Range Kids’ and, of course, ‘Simplicity Parenting’, will be suggested to you. A great book was recommended to me, ‘The Incredible Years’, which is full of down-to-earth, insightful wisdom; but the implication I also get is, ‘These are precious, fleeting times. DON’T BLOW IT!!!!’ Much as I enjoy dipping into and out of these beautiful, inspirational, sites and tomes, and much as I lust after a perfectly organised home and life, labelled to within an inch of its existence (let’s be honest, who wouldn’t?), something bothers me about them too. Subliminally we are told that, once you’ve crocheted your own dishcloths, fashioned your children’s clothes in organic fabrics and switched off the TV for good, life will be simpler and, ultimately, more fulfilling. Simple is undoubtedly better where children are concerned, but when we are feeding ourselves with beautifully Instagrammed images of a lifestyle, do we not induce even more feelings of guilt, anxiety and inadequacy? For all that simplicity parenting resonates with me, labelling it seems a step too far. It’s what our parents did anyway; they simply hadn’t made it into a verb. I want my kids to be free to explore, use their imaginations and be inventive. I want them to appreciate the things they have, play freely with other children and not waste it staring at a screen. So I’ve been avidly following journalist Hattie Garlick’s blog, freeourkids.co.uk. Faced with redundancy, she set herself the challenge of living with her young child ‘for free’; in her words, “ to try to raise a child for a year without spending ANY money (but having just as much fun).” She has simple rules such as no toy-buying, no paid-for activities, no new clothes. It’s such a breath of fresh air, it’s honest, beautiful and, hey presto, it’s working. I agree with her argument that trends such as ‘thrift chic’ “just peddle(s) another unattainable fantasy, another mirage of perfection for women to aim at before collapsing face-down in the sand in exhaustion. None of us have enough time to really live the ‘homemade idyll’’. In contrast, Hattie’s simplicity is actually attainable. I am also drawn to Tom Hodgkinson’s philosophy of Idle Parenting in which he advocates a certain ‘benign neglect’. By not being his child’s entertainer and activity provider 24/7, by involving them with chores from an early age, by leaving them alone a little more, he is teaching them self-reliance, achieving a balance between freedom and authority. Free range kids. Sounds liberating for all. *Source: Graeme Paton, 21st Aug 2012 The Telegraph

Q.

I’ve heard a lot of people talking about philanthropy recently, what is this?

A.

The purest definition I have found defines philanthropy as ‘the practice of performing charitable or benevolent actions’, however I would describe it simply as the act of providing help to those less fortunate than you. The word tends to be used when referring to the wealthy and their charitable activities and is perhaps more prevalent in today’s recessionary environment because there are a greater number of causes that need assistance. Our experience at Boston is that there are mutual benefits to be gained from creating collaborations and partnerships with charities. Boston’s chairman set up the Boston Charitable Foundation in 2008 and has always encouraged staff involvement in supporting local community charities on both an individual and a group basis. Taking part in fundraising events helps staff raise awareness for the charities closest to their hearts. From cake bakes to sponsored walks, growing moustaches and many more, everything contributes to the effect of encouraging people to volunteer or otherwise be involved in raising funds for charity, and this has considerable emotional and economic benefits. This can, in turn, also be the catalyst for change, creating a sense of local and individual pride that spurs awareness and development. We think this creates a great culture for a business community that the Island can be proud of. So is philanthropy merely a status symbol for the wealthy? Not in our view. It is about everyone doing their bit to help those less fortunate.

I need an income & my cash deposits are maturing - what can I do?

Q.

An article in The Examiner recently stated that travel agents do not know about the Island, how would you suggest we rectify this?

The days of reasonable returns from cash are well behind us and the days where interest returns kept up with inflation are also becoming a thing of the past. This means that, regardless of income, the actual capital used to generate a return is losing its value in real terms and investors requiring an income have what, on the face of it, is a fairly straight choice: • either to accept a lower income yield from new cash rates • or take more risk in an attempt to match their previous income levels This isn’t an easy choice, but I’m afraid that is the world we’re living in at the moment and it’s likely to be that way for some time. In fact, the Bank of England could well reduce interest rates further rather than increase them. This leaves an awkward question and an even more awkward solution. Those who accept that they must take more risk to maintain income levels must also accept that their portfolio needs to be constructed around their medium term investment goals. The asset classes their portfolio contains is what is going to generate their income and this also needs to be carefully balanced against their capacity for los s. As such, a clear understanding of risk and that income levels can fluctuate is essential. But providing those facts are understood, it is possible to receive reasonable levels of income without over-exposure. But (and here comes the caveat), that volatility could change with the market and hence we come swiftly back to our issue at the start. If you haven’t got the appetite for increased risk then perhaps you need to tighten your belt and reduce your expenditure.

Remember the days when annual holiday decisions were made following a trip to the high street travel agents? Ask anyone over the age of 40 of years old and chances are the answer will be yes. Ask anyone under the age of 20 and the chances are they will look at you like you have just landed from a separate solar system. Then ask them to point to the Isle of Man on a map and brace yourself for the wavering response. Whether it is a failing of geography teachers of just a phenomenon of international mystery, who knows; but the Isle of Man remains either unknown or greatly misunderstood by many beyond these shores Recently Sleepwell Hotels, with assistance from IoM Tourism, Manx Heritage, Steam Packet Company and IoM Railways, invited 4 of the UK’ s largest group travel operators on a familiarisation visit to the Island. For the two day itinerary the sun shone, the local seafood was on top form and some of the key personnel from our local tourism industry escorted these guests from top to toe of the Island, riding footplate on Steam Trains and absorbing the breath-taking scenery along the way. The verdict? “We never knew it was anything like this!”. And this from a group of specialist tourism professionals who sell package holidays to the IoM for a living. Scary. The infrastructure is in place, we must now educate and inform a new audience. Attendance at tourism and travel events, escorted familiarisation visits and an international PR plan must form part of an on-going and long term strategy to raise greater awareness of everything we have to offer. Have faith and be proud of your Island, the darkest days have gone, the future can only be bright.

I’ve just moved to the Island and don’t fully understand the tax system, what are the main differences between here and the UK?

Although the Manx system of calculating your tax liability is broadly similar to that of the UK (whether you are an employee or self employed) the rates of tax are generally lower and the allowances that can be offset against your income are generally higher. However, an important practical difference, particularly for people who only received employment income in the UK, is that all residents of the Isle of Man are required to submit an annual Tax Return – regardless of their level of income, or its sources. This return should be filed by 6 October following the end of the tax year (which is 5 April as per the UK). Perhaps the three most significant differences between the two tax systems are that the Isle of Man does not operate any form of capital gains tax or inheritance tax, and does not automatically recognise the tax benefits given by the UK to certain financial instruments such as insurance bonds. Therefore, the tax system on the Isle of Man may well be beneficial for people moving to the island who have assets to dispose of, or where those assets are moved to the island with a view to their ultimately being distributed as part of your estate. However, it would be prudent to ensure that you establish the correct tax treatment for any investments you might hold (either directly or indirectly through fund structures etc.) as these may well create significant tax liabilities that would not have existed under the corresponding UK legislation.

Remember Me... Granting wishes for families on the Isle of Man

Although set up a short while ago, remember me was officially launched on Friday 14th June 2013 at Portofino Restaurant on the Quay.

The charity grants wishes on behalf of children who have a sick or terminally ill mummy or daddy. Founded by Lesley Turnbull, known for her successful charity Wish Upon A Dream, Lesley was often asked if she could grant a wish for a parent, however, the articles governing Wish Upon A Dream are quite strict. Lesley felt the only alternative was to launch a new charity, Remember Me. With the legal advice and assistance from John Rimmer and his team at Appleby Trust (Isle of Man) Ltd., and when sanctioned by the Attorney General, Remember Me was born. As with Wish Upon A Dream, no one on the board of Remember Me receives a salary or expenses, their work and expertise is given freely and the day to day running costs are met privately, ensuring funds go to the cause.

The evening saw a Godfather theme attended by 80 people, spoilt with good food, great entertainment and the room looking amazing with themed lighting and in part sponsored by ELS, Fentons at 42 and Portofino Restaurant.

Joining Lesley Turnbull on the board is close friend, Lesley Webb, Partner and Advocate at Callin Wild. It is a wonderful family environment, as all the board members of Wish Upon A Dream and Remember Me join forces to raise funds for all the joint events. The main event, being the annual ‘Fine Dining Ball & Auction’, which usually results in a waiting list for tables and hailed as one of the finest events on the island’s calendar. Lesley explained, it is very bitter sweet granting wishes for anyone in these situations. Whilst I am happy to be able to assist at these sad times, you cannot help but get involved with the family while the wish unfolds. I am always so humble at being a part of the process, sad because of why I am there but happy to be able to raise a smile on the children’s and parents faces. Hence, my extended family increases with every wish.

As a new charity, funds are not plentiful, but where there is a will there is a way and as always, failure is not an option. I am blessed with the amazing friends and people that support me and my work and there are so many that want to see both charities be a success, especially my son Matt and daughter Abby, as they are well aware that it is because of their sister passing away and growing her angel wings that these charities are here. The companies that have raised funds for this cause so far include Callin Wild, Appleby, Moore Stephens, ELS, Houses2Rent, Clinique, Estee Lauder and other local groups. Without them, the first three wishes would have been a struggle. Sadly, our first wish, a young mum with cancer who had three little girls, passed away suddenly before she could go on her wish. However, Daddy, auntie Kirsten and the three girls embarked on the poignant trip their mummy wanted them to go on so much. Whilst it was emotional, those old enough realised it was important to carry out the wish, and there will be memories for life. I am delighted that Mark Cooper, an ex rugby player has decided to do a Triathlon in September for Remember Me and Wish Upon A Dream. He is working so hard at fund raising and awareness that he hopes he will raise over £5000 for these two charities he has taken to his heart and keenly supports. Anyone wishing to sponsor can do so by contact Lesley Turnbull on: 07624 229229. All that remains for me to say to everyone is THANK YOU for your support and love. You have so far allowed us to make a difference, yet again, to our wonderful island which becomes a special place where wishes and dreams are waiting for those amazing and brave people that need a wish. With love and thanks, Lesley & Lesley X

The Villa Marina

100th Anniversary

NOW & THEN In July 2013, the Villa Marina celebrates it’s 100th anniversary since first opening the doors to entertain the Manx public, but the Villa Marina’s origins go back as far as the turn of the 19th century. Grand family residence, girls’ school, Governor’s mansion, since the early 1800s, the Villa Marina has been a prominent feature on Douglas Promenade. It was built around 1806 and before its incarnation as an entertainment venue, ‘The Marina Lodge’ was home to two of the Island’s most influential people; Samuel Harris, who gave his name to Harris Promenade, and the great Henry Bloom Noble who lived in there until his death in 1903. Henry Bloom Noble left his estate to trustees to be used for charitable purposes. This left the way open for Douglas Corporation to enter into negotiations to acquire the house and grounds for the benefit of the Manx public. The trustees imposed strict conditions, which included the demolition of existing buildings, widening of adjoining roads and opening of the grounds as public gardens. They recommended the erection of a grand concert hall to meet the demands of the many thousands of visitors flocking to Douglas each summer. Building work began on the ‘Villa Marina Kursaal’ in December 1911 and was successfully completed 18 months later, featuring the familiar octagonal hall and at the time, the largest unsupported roof in the British Isles.

Photographer | Mike Proudfoot

In 1913, tourism in the Isle of Man was booming with a record half a million visitors. However, the declaration of war against Germany had a huge impact on Villa Marina. The word ‘Kursaal’ - meaning ‘health spa’ in German - was dropped from the title as it was deemed unpatriotic and was never restored. After four long years of conflict, the Island quickly regained its status as a popular tourist destination and the Royal Hall was bestowed with its grand title after the visit of King George VI and Queen Mary in 1919. In the 1920s, the Villa Marina proved itself a great attraction, as visitor figures returned to those attained pre-war. From the summer of 1939 until the end of WWII, internees, trainees and service men and women replaced the usual holidaymakers. At the end of the war, a tour of the Villa Marina was the first stop on His Majesty King George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s visit to the Island. After six long years of war, a sense of fun and relief swept the nation. The Island experienced another tourist boom with

visitor numbers in the first three years after the war, averaging over 600,000. Now, though, they wanted to stay up late, sing, dance and the defining era of the Villa Marina began. The Villa Marina was so popular during the 1950s that the queues of visitors keen to gain admittance to the Gardens led to Douglas Council feeling that they needed to intervene. They deemed that the crowds were untidy and a nuisance to passers-by. This was one of many issues that were hotly debated by Douglas Town Council, placing the Villa Marina firmly in the political arena. Visitors filled the Villa Marina day and night for 50 years, but during the 1960s numbers started to decline; despite the appearance of big name groups such as Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Searchers, The Hollies and the Swingin’ Blue Jeans. The venue continued to provide high quality entertainment from popular performers. However, the financial challenges continued though throughout the 70s and 80s. Other venues such as the isle of man premier magazine

culture

Lido closed but the Villa Marina changed its focus to serve the local population. The Island almost lost the entertainment complex in the 1980s when a controversial plan for a swimming pool resurfaced. The government proposed funding the scheme, with Douglas Corporation financing the refurbishment of the Villa Marina as a 1500-seat conference venue. It came as a bombshell when a survey revealed that the Villa Marina required major remedial work throughout the building. The government stepped in to help with costs and proposed that the Gaiety Theatre and the Villa Marina be managed jointly and this led to protracted negotiations between the two parties. The corporation decided to close the Villa doors for the 1995 season. The future of the complex looked bleak. A venue that had hosted many important occasions in Manx public life was in danger of closing permanently. Tynwald responded to the predicament by suggesting that the government should take over the site. An agreement was reached for the future of the building and the Villa Marina was acquired by Isle of Man Government in March 2000. It was a huge challenge to redevelop the iconic building. In 2001, major rebuilding and refurbishment began and breathed new life back into the grand old venue. In 2004, the Villa Marina opened its doors once more and was back in business. Today the Villa Marina is the Isle of Man’s largest and premier entertainment venue. It features on the tours of the biggest names in British comedy and has hosted some of the world’s most popular live music performers. WELCOME HOME a Manx made film The touching story ‘Welcome Home’ is the latest Manx made film in the pre-production pipeline as a result of the MannIN Shorts Film making initiative backed by the Arts Council. MannIN Shorts strives to provide a platform for Manx filmmakers by offering a comprehensive scheme to train crews in every aspect of the industry, thereby enabling indigenous talent to produce films of a quality that will be recognised and applauded on both the UK and international circuits. The scheme encompasses all stages of a project’s development, giving Manx film-makers a real opportunity to develop their own creative voices.

Driven by the activity of those involved, the scheme has inspired and educated, resulting in an unprecedented high level of productivity. Co-Founder, Christy DeHaven said: “In three years we’ve taken five films through the production process from script to screen. ‘Welcome Home’ is the latest in that series and we’re really excited about it!”

‘What’s the Big idea..?’ ‘Welcome Home’ is a bittersweet story of a father eagerly waiting for his son to return home from war. As the story unfolds to an emotional climax, we realise that his son’s return may not be the homecoming that we had hoped for. The film’s writer, John Brimble wrote the film after attending a series of MannIN Shorts workshops. John said: “I wanted to write a story that was selfcontained and could be made on a small budget, but still could be told with a traditional structure and meaning.” ‘Welcome Home’ is a project that gives back to the community. The film’s cast are all local and the crew are almost entirely Manx residents. The film will be shot on location on the Isle of Man, giving back to local businesses and individuals. This all greatly supports the local film-making community and MannIN Shorts ethos. The film is being produced by Emily Cook, who runs Island-based production company, Reel Vision Film Solutions. Emily said: “As the producer, my initial task is to gather a crew together. In fitting with the ethos of the MannIN Shorts scheme, I have endeavoured to get a core group of skilled professionals on-board to provide mentoring and invaluable industry knowledge to the rest of the crew and cast.”

‘The Dream Team... a few of the Crew’ Shawn Sturnick - The Director - Shawn is an accomplished American stage Director and actor, who was one of the world famous ‘Blue Men’. For Shawn, MannIN Shorts provides a unique opportunity to side step into the world of film, imparting his acting and directing knowledge on our fledgeling cast. Sally Black - The Production Designer - Sally has worked on a wide range of films, from small independent projects, to Hollywood blockbusters with some of the best regarded directors and actors in the business, credits include; ‘Body of Lies’ and ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. After many years of working abroad, Sally is happy to be able to do more projects on the Island, especially with MannIN Shorts, who have become invaluable in giving interested people the opportunity to become involved in the creative process of film making and exposure to those who have spent years crafting their art. Sally describes this exposure as priceless. Sally said: “For those of us hoping to enter the business, it is the equivalent of an old fashioned apprenticeship. For those who have been there, it’s a joy and a pleasure to introduce new people to the magical - and sometimes dreadful - world that is film.” Upon first reading the script, Sally recognised that ‘Welcome Home’ is a touching, nuanced story, which despite it’s ‘short’ format, has the potential to deliver an intriguing story with solid characterisations. Importantly, it will also allow local actors and crew to showcase their considerable abilities. Emily acknowledges: “We are fortunate to have Sally on the crew, not only does she bring a wealth of experience but also was Emmy Award nominated for her work.” Dave Armstrong - the DoP or Cinematographer Dave, Co-Founder of MannIN Shorts and writer/Director of award winning short ‘Ghostgirl’, has nearly 20 years experience delivering high quality productions both on and off the Isle of Man. Dave said: “I am especially looking forward to working with first time film director, Shawn Sturnick.’... ‘Welcome Home’ is a touching and challenging project that has a lot of soul.” Danny Lacey - The First Assistant Director

End Result We hope that the film will raise awareness and allow the audience to consider the support that people like our protagonist, Barry, may need. All of the proceeds from the film’s première will go towards a war bereavement charity. We will have the première of the film at the Broadway cinema. It will also be screened at the Isle of Man Film Festival and we aim for it to go on to tour the international film festival circuit. The film has received funding from the Arts Council, but with four weeks to shoot, Emily said: “It’s fantastic that we’ve received support from the Arts Council through the merit of the MannIN Shorts Scheme, however, in order to complete the film’s production we must raise an additional £3,000. We are currently looking for support from individuals and businesses who want to take advantage of this exciting opportunity to support the indigenous film making community right here on the Isle of Man, but it’s important for us to give back too, so we have lots of exciting initiatives to keep people keen. Sponsors will receive VIP invites to the premiere, a DVD of the film, positive sponsorship association, mentions in our press releases and promotions regarding the film.” Most importantly, anyone who supports this film would be helping to support indigenous film making talent right here on the Isle of Man.

Our Sponsors would receive ... • Complimentary invitation to the Première as our VIP guests • A DVD of the finished Film • Positive sponsorship association • Branding and mentions on our press releases & promotions regarding the film

Danny is a Leeds based film maker and former Isle of Man resident, with four self-penned films under his belt. Danny looks forward to returning to the Isle of Man to work on ‘Welcome Home’ imparting his knowledge and inspiring through his energetic attitude. Emily comments: “It’s truly incredible what Danny has accomplished in recent years. I asked him to first on this film, as he has extensive on-set experience and will keep our Director and DoP ontrack with timing, ensuring the schedule is met.” Calum Harvey - Wardrobe Dept Calum is a designer. After undertaking a National Diploma in Art and Design at the IoM college, went on to attain an MA in Menswear Design from the Royal College of Art in 2011. Calum then went on to work at Burberry in London. Now back on the Island, Calum is running his own design production studio, working freelance on a variety of design projects locally and internationally. His spring/summer womenswear fashion range is currently in store at Peter Luis, Duke Street. As the costume designer, Calum’s visualisations and sketches were one of the first elements to get underway. Calum said: “It’s been fascinating adding layers and dimension to the characters by imagining who they are, and working with the team on bringing them to life. It’s great to work alongside an illustrious team with experience and drive. Hopefully this project will lead to future collaborations.”

Anyone interested in finding out more about this opportunity or wishing to get involved, please contact the film’s Producer, Emily Cook at cookemily@like. co.uk or search for MannIN Shorts on facebook.

The remainder of roles will provide trainee opportunities to people of all ages, experience and ability. The one thing they must share is a passion and a drive to create films and learn their craft, by receive valuable on-set experience and mentoring from industry professionals.

CULTURE NEWS JEREMY PAUL’S WORK SELECTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS EXHIBITIONS IN USA AND UK Sayle Gallery Artist, Jeremy Paul, has had distinctive wildlife paintings selected for Birds in Art in Wisconsin, USA, and for the Art For Survival exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. ‘Saddle Billed Storks’ has been chosen for the highly competitive Birds in Art exhibition to be held at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wasau, Wisconsin in September. “My painting is just one of 100 selected for the exhibition from nearly a thousand entries from around the world,” says Jeremy. “As a wildlife – and specifically bird – painter, I am delighted to have my work chosen once again. I saw the saddle billed storks on a trip to the Okavango Delta in Botswana in 2011. They are rather strange to look at - not least because they stand nearly 5ft tall – so were hard to miss!” The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum has hosted the Birds in Art exhibition since 1976 and this is the sixth time one of Jeremy’s paintings has been selected. culture FILM REVIEW

FILM REVIEW UP&COMING words | Jonathon Holloway

Director of the month

Rick Baker Since the theme of 'makeover' can't really be applied to film without delving into the truly horrible realm of teen rom-coms, I'm going to take a different approach and focus on make-up in film instead. Hence this month's Filmmaker of the Month is not a director, but a revolutionary make-up artist. Rick Baker has been nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning 7, all for "Best Achievement in Makeup". He has worked on films such as The Exorcist, An American Werewolf in London, Star Wars, X-Men & Batman Returns among many more. He is one of the most successful cinematic makeup artists of all time, and is considered legendary in Hollywood. Even if the film is lacking in quality, his work still stands out. Take his most recent Oscar win for The Wolfman in 2010. Truly mediocre and tedious, but such is the excellence of Baker's work that The Wolfman is now an Oscar winning film. Baker got his big break as the assistant to legendary makeup artist Dick Smith on The Exorcist, which in turn lead to him being hired on films such as the 1976 remake of King Kong, and Star Wars in 1977. Baker honed his craft working on creature horror films in the 1970s, for which he has gained a level of cult status among horror fans. Films such as Squirm (1976), Track of the Moon Beast (1976) & The Incredible Melting Man (1977) made Baker a specialist in horror creature effects. This even lead to him working with infamous body-horror film director David Cronenberg on Videodrome (1983), which stars James Woods as the CEO of a broadcast station which transmits surreal and violent hallucinations. The scene where Woods puts his face through a television screen is particularly bizarre. Baker won his first Oscar for An American Werewolf In London in 1982, and over 20 years later remains the industry standard.

MAKEOVER

An American Werewolf In London 1981 18

After Earth

12 Dir. M. Night Shyamalan. Starring: Will Smith & Jaden Smith. Starring Will Smith and his real life son Jaden Smith playing fictional father and son Cypher and Kitai Raige. 1000 years after a cataclysmic event forced the evacuation of Earth mankind has settled on a fictional planet in the Solar System named Nova Prime. Cypher and Kitai are part of the "Ranger Corps", on a mission to Earth when they are stranded on the planet after a crash with an asteroid. The latest outing from deteriorating director M. Night Shyamalan so expect a terrible twist.

Despicable Me 2

U Dir. Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud. Starring: Steve Carell, Ken Jeong, Russell Brand & Kristen Wig. The sequel to 2010's hit animated film which was a success with audiences and critics alike. Having given up Super Villainy after the adoption of his three daughters (events as told in Despicable Me), Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villian league to help them defeat a powerful new Super Villain named Eduardo. With the help of his minions Gru must once again save the world and his family. Despicable Me was a break out hit in 2010, second only to the gigantic Toy Story 3. In a year where six major animated films were released, including How to Train Your Dragon & Shrek Forever After, this is no small feat. A prequel spin off focused on Gru's minions ingeniously titled, "Minions" is set for release in 2014.

The Fly 1986 18

Dir. David Cronenberg

Dir. John Landis

Featuring the talents of our filmmaker of the month Rick Baker, An American Werewolf In London is a cult comedy-horror classic. Two American teenagers, David and Jack, are backpacking through England and stop at a local pub on the Yokshire Moors. After a less than friendly reception, the two boys become lost on the Moors during the night and are attacked by a werewolf. Jack is killed, but David survives after the villagers rescue him. Waking up in a London hospital weeks later, David begins to have bizarre dreams and hallucinations while he is questioned and harassed by the police, who insist he was attacked by an escaped lunatic. David soon begins to realise he has become a werewolf, and will transform on the next full moon. Directed by John Landis who is famous for directing the Michael Jackson video, "Thriller", and for directing The Blues Brothers.

30

Man of Steel

12 Dir. Zack Snyder. Starring: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe & Michael Shannon. Starring Jersey born actor Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel himself, this is the latest reboot of the Superman franchise. Clark Kent is adopted and raised in rural America after he lands on Earth as a babe on his escape from the dying planet of Krypton. After struggling to fit in to human society with his extra terrestrial powers, the young journalist has to rise to mankind's defence after members of his race attack Earth. Director Zack Snyder is familiar with comic book lore having helmed 300 in 2006, and Watchmen in 2009. Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight trilogy, produces the film, perhaps being hired to keep the visually obsessed Snyder grounded to the story, which has been the major fault in Snyder's most recent work.

World War Z

TBC Dir. Marc Forster. Starring: Brad Pitt & Mireille Enos. Based upon the hit 2006 novel, "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War", World War Z is a post-apocalyptic tale of one man's quest to save the world, and his family, from the Zombie uprising. Brad Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, a United Nations employee who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to decimate humanity itself. Directed by Quantom of Solace helmsman Marc Forster, World War Z has had a troubled production from day one, with the script being entirely re-written delaying the production for two years.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012 12

Dir. Peter Jackson

Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum), a brilliant yet eccentric scientist, invents the "telepod", a revolutionary teleportation device. While initially only usable for inanimate objects, Brundle modifies the machine to teleport living things. Using himself as a test subject Brundle teleports himself, unaware that a common housefly is also in the machine. Brundle emerges from the receiving telepod normal, but soon begins to change, and realises the telepod has fused his DNA with that of the fly, beginning a transformation. Directed by body-horror specialist David Cronenberg in one of his most famous works. Cronenberg explores people's fears of bodily transformation and infection, often intertwining the psychological with the physical. As such, The Fly is seen by many critics to be a comment on the AIDS epidemic which swept America in the 1980s.

Peter Jackson returns to Middle Earth with the first of an expect trilogy of films based upon The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien. In the film sense a prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, in this film we follow Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) on his journey to the Lonely Mountain with Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and his company of dwarves to recover their lost home from the dragon Smaug. In fitting with the book, this film has a more child-friendly and jaunty tone which has divided fans of The Lord of the Rings film series, which had a more serious and realistic tone. To fit with this month's theme I also wanted to pick a less gruesome or horror-centric film known for it's makeup work. Primarily, this being the transformation of the 13 human actors into the company of dwarves who accompany Bilbo Baggins (played by Martin Freeman) on his adventure to the Lonely Mountain. HAWAIIAN TROPIC After Sun Lotion £11.99 - BOOTS Keeping skin hydrated after a day in the sun is the key to a longer-lasting tan. The new Hawaiian Tropic Silk-Hydration After Sun Lotion smells like a holiday in a bottle – think coconut and papaya but it also cools and moisturizes in one step. L’OREAL PARIS

Sublime Bronze Exfotonic Body Polishing Gel £7.99 - BOOTS However much care you take with sun protection, when it comes to tanning the safest option is always to fake it. Step one to self-tan success is exfoliation. The new body buffer from L’Oreal Paris, Sublime Bronze Exfotonic Body Polishing Gel, is hitting the shops in June. It contains the twin gods of smooth skin - alpha hydroxyl acids AND exfoliating beads and we love the subtle fragrance too. Follow the scrub with the NEW MOMENT BY MOMENT SELF-TAN BY VITA LIBERATA, which will take you from pasty to gloriously brown in just one hour. Apply the streak-free formula and decide how deep a tan you want. Wash off after 30 minutes for a light glow or leave on for longer for a deeper bronze. £24.50 - BOOTS

PIZ BUIN Wet Skin

FROM £17.99 - BOOTS If you’re in and out of the pool or sea on holiday you’ll love the new Biz Buin Wet Skin sunscreen. Experts have been telling us for years to reapply sun protection after every dip and this clever new technology means you don’t even need to dry off first. The formula is absorbed by wet skin just as well as dry and it’s a broad-spectrum sun cream so it protects against burning and the ageing rays of the sun.

Words | Jennifer Parkes

A Clear Winner? Not all fashion trends are built to last – some are fun for a month or two, and some are just plain wrong (Crocs, anyone?), yet sometimes the craziest creations somehow manage to stick. One such idea on the radar of fashion forecasters, and sweeping across multiple catwalks at Fashion Weeks earlier this year, was a surprising penchant for Perspex. Simone Rocha, Philip Lim, Alexander McQueen and Christian Louboutin all showcased their take on the trend; while a plastic t-shirt is probably a stretch too far for most people (although undoubtedly useful for a rainy Spring), a few clear accents to shoes and accessories demonstrated how one of 2013’s more contentious looks can be worn even by the more conservative dresser. Perspex purses were the key piece for most designers adopting this trend. While a see-through satchel can look pretty cool housing nothing but a silk scarf, in reality, the practicalities of letting everyone on the street see the bits of your life that you carry around every day are few and far between. As well as potentially being a magnet for thieves, there are probably some daily essentials that you would rather not share with passers-by! But even if Perspex isn’t the obvious choice for the office, one of the best ways to make this spring/summer style work is for a day at the beach, look cool in the heat, and you won’t need to worry about you bag being ruined by seawater. A clear clutch can look incredible paired with an outfit on a night out but, for peace of mind, make like Daisy Lowe and try a design lined with bright satin to keep your phone and cash under wraps. Perspex-heeled shoes have been seen before, but both high-end and high-street designers have come up with some fresh offerings to keep your feet in fashion over the coming months. Feel like Cinderella with crystal clear straps and heels, contrasted against bright summery colours or classic black. For a more grown-up take on your childhood jelly shoes, try flat sandals with clear t-bar straps for style that is both clear and comfortable.

Simone Rocha, Spring Summer 2013

Chunky plastic jewellery can very easily look cheap, but those clever cats at Tatty Devine have this one nailed with designs such as their ‘Posie’ necklace (layered clusters of transparent daisies), which are far from tacky and work for both day and night. Price tags of around £300 are a tad excessive for what will likely be a flash in the fashion pan, so why not hit high street favourites such as H & M and Topshop for affordable but equally amazing pieces?

The first collection was inspired by shelter and protection, everything that a homeless person would need. The design was all based around insulation and shelter, so everything that was used to reinvent the items was from hardware stores.

Roofless Founder of ROOFLESS clothing, Bethany Williams, lived and studied in the Isle of Man prior to progressing to higher education at The University of Brighton. ROOFLESS is an art practice and fashion collection with a charitable message. It wants not just to comment on a community, but to work in their social spaces to try to create a change by furthering economic gain for charity. By using their social capital, intellectual and labour intense skills they aim to create a profit, which is then given to connected charities, continuing the cycle. Jennifer Parkes spoke with Bethany to find out more about her most recent project and how this original, inspirational idea began.

50

So, before you went to university, you studied the Art Foundation Course at the Isle of Man College. Did your time there influence you, or change the way you looked at art and design? Definitely! I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, I was really interested in Geography and sustainable development, but I was also really interested in art and fashion, so I did the Art Foundation to help me make a decision. It really helped me to understand that I wanted to progress and do art as a degree. I really wasn’t interested in the system of fashion but I enjoyed making garments, so that led onto choosing my degree, a course that focused on conceptual and contemporary art. You began your project Roofless whilst you were studying at University. What was it that inspired you to begin this project? I filmed a documentary for a charity called Impact, which is a charity that helps people that have come out of rehab or prison to find employment. Meeting people that had gone through that, their experience and how much the charity had helped made me think that I wanted to do the same thing through my art practice. I also read a lot of art theory on how art can have a social effect and make a social change, which really affects my work too. Was the idea always based in reworking clothes or did that evolve from another idea? The initial plan came to me while I was volunteering at a soup kitchen in Brighton, it was always about trying to produce an effect for that community and I’ve always had a connection with garments, which I thought could be a good fit. Because I had been working at Garage [magazine], which was part of such a high end industry, in comparison to the soup kitchen, there seemed such juxtaposition between the two. I wanted to make a brand that could bridge the two environments, bringing the topic of charity and impoverishment into the fashion industry. With the clothes created for Roofless, you included tags that told the story of the individual who had previously owned the item. Were there any stories that particularly struck you? It was really interesting; when you’re working with the people there it’s crazy to see the desperate situations that some people are forced into. Everybody was so lovely, and from all walks of life, it was really rewarding.

[ COLLECTION 1 ]

How did you come up with your idea for the Wood Street reinvention project, which saw you start A New Life? Back when I was collaborating with Public Works, I was hired as a designer for them because they were given a charity shop called ‘A New Life’ on Wood Street, after the Arts Council gave 24 different artists a shop on Wood Street to reinvent. Public Works were given that shop, so they built an art residency in the window space and then I use the clothing from within the shop to make the garments. Were the influences behind the work similar to your first collection, such as people’s personal stories? The influence for this project was the Wood Street community rather than individual people. For the first collection, I used items from individual people and they were the influence behind the design, whereas this collection is inspired by Wood Street. I did a lot of research in the library about the history of the community, and found inspiration in conversations I had with people in the shop. Do you have a particular item that you put together that you are most proud of from either collection? My favourite would be the dinosaur jumper, it was interesting to make and it was really fun. It was difficult, I had to vacuum seal the dinosaurs in by myself with a heat gun, standing there with a cloth over my mouth, as I couldn’t find any company who could do it!

because quality matters

Where does your inspiration come from when it comes to the design or customisation of the garments? For example, little touches such as wooden collars or shrink-wrapped dinosaurs – do these have stories of their own? The first collection was inspired by shelter and protection, everything that a homeless person would need. The design was all based around insulation and shelter, so everything that was used to reinvent the items was from hardware stores. It was an interesting juxtaposition, as then we would be selling the garments to people who wouldn’t really need these items, while there would continue to be homeless people that did need them. The second collection was designed around Wood Street – the history, the community, the conversations. There was a man who had a horse collection; he collected literally everything to do with horses! He would buy all these objects, and the stories and the horses are featured in the prints. Children would also come and buy dinosaur toys with their pocket money, which we put into jumpers. Every element of our engagement with Wood Street has gone into the design. Your practice has been well-received in the UK, is there any part of its reception that has been particularly exciting for you? Garage have always been great, they’ve been amazing and have always helped us with getting to where we are now. We’re collaborating with Pop [magazine] at

the moment to photograph some of the garments, which is really exciting as I’ve always been a big fan of theirs. We’ve had a lot of coverage in the press recently with the help of our press agency, 360 + One Quarter, they’ve been amazing in helping us to be featured in Italian Vogue recently. Is there another project in the pipeline that you can share with us? We’re hoping to do a project with the mobile library in London, which loans books to homeless people as, obviously, you can’t loan books from a normal library without a fixed address. We’d love to collaborate with them and also with Space, which is both an art studio and homeless shelter. What is your ultimate goal with this project? What would you ultimately like to achieve? Ultimately, it has to be a charity, so that is the main goal. We want to build a charity of our own rather than working with others, so that we can be the end point of the money that we raise, but also with a fashion connection.

because quality matters

Do you have any advice for students currently in secondary school or at the Isle of Man College that are thinking of pursuing art or design as a career? I would say never feel pressured to be bracketed within one speciality, always be engaging with whatever YOU want to be engaged with. You don’t have to be specifically a fashion designer, or a photographer, or an artist, you can be whatever you want to be; it’s the bridge between fields which is where the most exciting stuff is coming from. And always be self-productive! Always be trying to get internships or doing your own projects because, ultimately, it’s yourself that you want to be working for at the end of the day.

Make up was created by using Mac beauty products. The base was MAC SPF 15 primer, which was followed by the Mac SPF Studio sculpt foundation and the MAC Studio fix powder. For the eyes, Daniella used the 3D glitter and the dark blue eye shadow pallet, which was accompanied with the buried treasure for eyeliner to complete the dramatic eyes. Finally for the lips, Daniella used the ‘More to Love’ lip liner and the ‘Girl about Town’ lipstick to complete a glamorous and dramatic look.

Over TT race week, the entire salon was ripped out and replaced with state of the art furniture from highly acclaimed Spanish Barcelona-based designers, Phal. Marco added: “My wife and I travelled to the Catalan capital personally to discuss the salon makeover. Our clients deserve to be in a beautiful area and my girls deserve to work in the best environment possible.”

Marco said: “Obviously this project couldn’t have happened without the involvement of a team of workers from Magic Carpets, Jimmy Keane Decorators, Peter Cowin Electricians, PT Plumbing, Ash Joinery and Silvester Sipos, to name but a few. Oh, and close family, of course!” Marco has also expanded his team this year. Another three trainees have graduated from the ranks of apprenticeship and joined the styling team as ‘academy stylists’, offering all of Utopia’s services with guidance from senior mentors.

Marco’s daughter, Daniella, has also had the opportunity to extend her beauty room, introducing a state of the art pedicure spa chair, and will shortly be offering the latest in non-surgical facelift treatment. With Apple TV and iPads for clients’ use, Marco continues to heighten the bar and will soon launch the Utopia iPhone app.

SOMETHING TO SAVOUR... Serves 4

4 x 200g haddock fillets 100g fine polenta 1 egg, beaten 10 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped ½tsp chilli flakes Zest of ½ unwaxed lemon A splash of milk Plain flour, for dusting Salt and freshly ground black pepper For the chips: 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into wedges Olive oil spray Salt and freshly ground black pepper Cayenne pepper

Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Put your potato wedges onto a large baking tray, spray with oil and season with salt, pepper and a light sprinkling of cayenne. Cook for about 20 minutes, at which point the fish will join them.

Funky fish and chips

To make the coating for the fish, combine the polenta, egg, basil, chilli and lemon zest in a bowl and mix well. If necessary, you may need to add a splash of milk to give a fairly thick batter. Dust the fish with a little flour seasoned with salt and pepper, and dip it into the batter, ensuring it’s thoroughly coated. Pop the fish onto a baking tray and bake in the oven alongside the potatoes for about 20 minutes. Serve with mushy peas and good old-fashioned salt and vinegar.

Serves 4

450g lean boneless shin or chuck steak, cut into 2.5cm cubes Salt and freshly milled black pepper ½tsp cayenne pepper 1tsp paprika 2tbsp sunflower oil 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 2 large garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped or crushed 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 200ml good, hot vegetable stock 1 cinnamon stick, halved 1tbsp light brown sugar 1tbsp tomato puree 1 x 400g pack fresh gnocchi 2tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley, to garnish

Place the beef in a large plastic food bag. Add the seasoning, cayenne and paprika; seal, shake well to coat the beef in the spices. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Cook the beef for 4-5 minutes in batches until brown on all sides. Transfer to a 1.7l/3pint heatproof casserole pot. In the same frying pan, cook the onion and garlic for 2-3 minutes. Spoon into the casserole pot. Add the tomatoes and stock, cinnamon, sugar and tomato puree. Bring this to the boil, reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 2-2½ hours. Add the gnocchi 10 minutes before the end of the cooking time. Garnish with the parsley and serve with crusty bread.

Words | Anne Berry | The Wine Cellar

Giving wine its final makeover!

A

lthough wine is produced from grapes, it is not necessarily always suitable for strict vegetarians and vegans.

To improve clarity, wines undergo a process called fining. Some winemakers allow the process to take place naturally by gravity, but this takes time and does not make commercial sense. Fining involves the addition of a protein to the juice or wine, which acts like a magnet, attracting proteins of the opposite charge and other particles. These larger, heavier particles then sink to the bottom and the clear wine can be transferred to another tank before filtration or bottling.

uses his skill to decide which agent to use and how much. Increasingly a fining agent called Bentonite is being used. This is a volcanic clay, which can be used for either red or white wines, and which means that there have been no animal products in the final wine. Carbon is also used, but this absorbs particles rather than attracting them, and can help to remove any off odours due to oxidisation. However overuse can strip the wine of flavour, character and colour. At The Wine Cellar, we have a large number of wines that have been fined using non animal products, thus suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.

Many of these agents are derived from animal products, one of the most common being egg white. It is used more for fining red wines because it can also reduce astringency.

If you are looking for a light white wine, try the Opportunist, a deliciously fresh, dry yet fruity blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling from Australia. (£9.25) At only 12% abv, this makes a perfect picnic wine.

Another is isinglass, made from collagen, extracted from the swim bladders of fish. This is known for its gentle qualities and does not take any flavour or character from the wine. It is used more for white and rose wines. Gelatine is another popular fining agent, again used more for red wines, as it can help to reduce excessive tannins.

Bronze medal winner in the International Wine Challenge.

It is important to remember that these products do not remain in the wine, but are simply used to clarify it and the winemaker

A great value red vegan wine is Rubicone Sangiovese at £7.45. Produced from the grape variety

used in the production of Chianti, this is light in alcohol at just 11.5%, and is perfect served alongside pizza or pasta with tomato based sauce. If you are looking for a fuller flavoured red, one worth trying is Trophy winning Unanime from Argentina. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, this has big rich flavours of chocolate, tobacco, black fruit and a hint of black pepper. At £16.75, it is a big wine and worth every penny! If your choice is a sparkling wine, try Fiol, a fresh and delicately fruity dry Prosecco at £12.75. These are just a few of the wines we stock that are suitable for both vegans and vegetarians. use it when the weather allows, so efficient heating and cooling systems are a must to make the most of your investment. Portable heaters aren’t a good long-term solution and while extending your home’s central heating system into the conservatory may not be cheap, powerful radiators are one way to counter all that glass when it’s cold. Installing electric heating is often easier - with underfloor heating, you have a nice warm floor and warmth that radiates upwards, ideal if there’s little or no room for radiators. Blinds help to insulate a conservatory in winter, as well as keeping it cool in summer, and provide privacy, reduce glare and prevent soft furnishings from fading in the sun. Specialist window and roof blinds, can reflect 85% of the sun’s heat to prevent the space from overheating and can also reduce heating costs (by up to 18% for Alu-Pleat) when it’s cold.

CONSERVATORY clearly a good idea

Get those jobs done with a little help from our DIY guru Julia. This month: how to increase your living space. This (so far) lacklustre summer has probably convinced you that having a conservatory is a good idea. Hot, sunny days seem to be a thing of the past, but with a conservatory, you can still enjoy the garden while remaining safely under cover. Conservatories are versatile too, and can be made into sitting rooms, playrooms, dining rooms, dens or even home offices. The problem, though, is that they’re often boiling when it’s hot, and freezing when it’s cold, so you must make sure they are properly equipped for extremes of temperature. Many conservatories have low brick walls with glazing above, but if you’d prefer a garden room to a conservatory, you can

increase the brick ratio (and perhaps have a tiled or semi-tiled roof), which makes it easier to insulate and add radiators. Conservatories are usually at the back of the house, but if there’s a sunny spot at the side, you may prefer to put yours there. Its position can make a big difference to how usable it is, so consider how the sun moves across the plot during the day. An east-facing conservatory will only get morning sun, while a west-facing one will be cooler in the morning and hotter towards the end of the day. Conservatories that face north should get angled sun first and last thing and so won’t overheat on hot days, but they can be bitterly cold in winter. A south-facing conservatory makes the best sun-trap, but it will get extremely hot on a warm summer day.

As well as being usable all year round, your conservatory should be in proportion to the garden and house, as you don’t want to devalue your home by making the garden too small with an oversized conservatory. The best way to get an idea of the size (and position) is to mark it out in the garden with spray paint or string and pegs, and change it if you’re not happy with it. Also consider how you’ll use the space inside the conservatory and where you’ll put furniture. If the doors to the garden will be at the front, the conservatory may become a glorified corridor, so the space may be more usable if they’re at the side. Like anything in your home, there are different styles of conservatory, from ones with ornate period features to plainer, more contemporary ones. What the conservatory is made of affects its appearance as well. UPVC conservatories are white or wood effect, and they’re affordable and require little maintenance. Alternatively, aluminium is really strong, durable and versatile, but it can be expensive. Wooden conservatories are expensive too and require more maintenance than UPVC and aluminium - but they are environmentally friendly, as long as the wood is sustainably sourced, and natural. Quite simply though, the best conservatory is the one that matches the period and style of your home so that it becomes a seamless addition.

It is, of course, a shame to spend all that money on a conservatory and only be able to

even New Zealand! A great way to share and save a life as blood is designed to go around.

Believe big and go with your instinct. Dream big and people can make things happen, be the best you can and always look at the finite details.

How did you get into this? What is your background? All my family are involved in medicine, in some form or other and it actually goes back to when my Grandmother suffered from hearing loss that I began to understand the invisible disability and how it affected her and her family. When she started using a hearing aid, and we’re talking over 30 years ago, I saw a complete change in her life and her ability to interact with us. I was so impressed by its efficiency that I decided to study to become an Audiologist at Cardiff and Manchester University and qualified nearly 20 years ago. What are your hobbies outside of work? I’ve always been into sport. My first passion was Rugby. I was selected for the local first team when I was 17 and was still, foolishly, playing 1st Team rugby well into my 40s. I was lucky enough to play with some World-Class players and I was fortunate enough to play for Cardiff and Sale - somehow being made Captain for them as well. Nearing the end of my playing days I helped to set up a new local rugby club which actually went on to win the National Awards Blueprint of how to set up a Rugby Club, now there are 150 kids there on a Sunday morning. It looks like they all enjoy the game as much as I did and I know it will teach each of them all about responsibility, camaraderie, a Team ethos and, most importantly, sportsmanship and winning . When my body, and my wife, told me I can no longer play at the level I wanted I turned to running. Having always wanted to do a marathon this was my next target. So, I researched into the options and stumbled across ‘UK’s toughest Marathon’ and decided to give that a go, a brutal 26.2 mile fell race in the Lake District. This was the beginning of my ‘Fancy sharing a pint?’ campaign. Rather than ask for a charitable money donation to support my adventurers, I requested people to donate a pint of their blood to the National Blood Service. My aim was for 1001 pints in 40 days, we achieved over 1,700 with over 800 new donors! I am 6’4” and not exactly built for endurance races. I had set my goal and trained hard to achieve it. I turned up at the start line, by far the largest competitor there, and I was surrounded by athletes who were all built like racing jockeys or former rowing coxes, I felt like Gulliver. Grit, determination and the fear of failure got me over the finishing line, after running every step of the way in just over 4 hours. Although it took me about a fortnight to be able to move normally again! Knowing how many people had donated blood was a huge motivator. From here I progressed to triathlons and somehow got to represent Great Britain in the Tri-City-Athlon, a unique event to promote the Olympics. I joined a team of 10 from the UK including Alistair and Jonny Brownlee - the Olympic gold and bronze medal legends. The event kicked off with a 1.5k swim in Paris, then boarding the Eurostar to Brussels where we cycled 40k through the City centre . We all then raced back on the Eurostar to London for the final 10k run in Regents Park that night. There was a common theme at the event where at each section my aim was to not get lapped by the Brownlee’s. On each occasion it was also their mission to lap me. As it turned out they had the luck on their side! The Brownlee brothers are great fun, fierce competitors and deserve all that they have achieved. My aim for the Tri-City-Athlon was to raise a pint for every 50 metres swam, pedalled or ran, so a total of 1,030 pints of blood. By the end of it with a little help from Chris Evans on Radio 2, we raised over 7,000 pints from on our Island, the UK, Europe and because quality matters

What advice would you give to someone starting a business / a would-be entrepreneur? Have a total and utter belief in yourself. Believe it and go with your instinct. You can make and will make things happen, be the best you can be and always look at the finite details. It’s the little things that count; there is always room at top for being the very best in your field! It doesn’t cost to call a client or customer after a meeting to say thank you, or to send out a Christmas/ Birthday/ Get well soon card, do things that make people feel good - WOW! them. Never imagine what’s the worst that can happen, but what’s the best that can happen. See everything as an opportunity! Never ever sit back and rest and you will become the very best in the World. Always be passionate and enthusiastic in what ever you do and you will get there quicker than you think and in less time than you can imagine. What’s headed for the future? To maintain IOM Hearing Solutions as Europe’s unique pioneering clinic where every single patient gets the very best advice, care and attention that they deserve to improve their hearing - the rewards for this are unparalleled! My next mission is IronMan 2014 in Austria. For this I am starting a new fundraiser called ‘Bone Idle’. This will take a little more commitment from people but again it will be free and have the reward of again saving a life! I will be launching this later in the year. Apart from that I will keep thriving on my life and enjoying being blessed by being surrounded by such a wonderful, loving family, great friends and delightful patients.

SURE STEPS FORWARD WITH A NEW NAME, NEW OWNERS AND NEW FOCUS AT SENIOR LEVEL

ISLE OF MAN WINS BEST INTERNATIONAL FINANCE CENTRE AWARD

Sure has rebranded its enterprise division, refreshed the look of the Sure consumer brand and added members to the Group Executive Committee.

The Isle of Man has been named ‘Best International Finance Centre’ in the Professional Advisor International Fund and Product Awards 2013 beating last year’s winners, Jersey, into second place. In addition, businesses based in the Isle of Man won over half of this year’s awards.

The company has taken its well respected and popular consumer brand, Sure, and extended it into its enterprise division, which is now known as Sure International, reflecting both the global reach of the company since its acquisition by the Batelco Group and the vast resource base which Isle of Man businesses can access following the acquisition.

Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK said: ‘This is fantastic recognition for the Isle of Man at a time when the global landscape for financial services is changing. If Government and the private sector continue to work together closely to deliver innovative and excellent services in the manner illustrated by these awards, then the Isle of Man can continue to prosper in that changing world.’

“Our customers told us that they trusted the Sure name and we wanted our new enterprise brand to combine that sense of local expertise with the global scale our new owners give us – Sure International does that” stated Eddie Saints, Sure’s CEO.

Treasury Minister Eddie Teare MHK added: ‘We focused our submission on what had been achieved in relation to international standards and cooperation, the closeness and effectiveness of our relationships with the local financial services sector and the balanced nature of our economy.

Alongside the rebrand of the Enterprise division, Sure has refreshed its consumer brand, introducing a new-look logo that represents the richness of its full-service telecoms offering and a modern, optimistic outlook for the future. Underpinning these brand changes is a renewed focus on corporate sales and customer excellence as Sure’s Group Executive Committee is bolstered with the appointment of Jo Cox as Corporate Sales Director and Charlotte Dunsterville as Customer Experience Director, each of whom brings with them the benefit of many years telecoms experience.

‘We have been at the forefront of best practice with regard to international tax and transparency standards building on our well established platforms of pragmatic regulation and consumer protection.’ Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK commented: ‘The award for ‘Best International Finance Centre’ is truly a team effort. We would not have been able to secure this without the excellent work of everyone involved from across Government.

“Sure is entering a new, exciting phase as we renew our commitment to customer service excellence in the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands and take advantage of our new owners’ expertise and experience to deliver what our customers want, when they want it, at a price that’s right” continued Eddie Saints.

‘Our financial services sector can also take great pride in these awards. Their excellence in product offering and customer service has driven the success of the Island’s diverse economy and I am delighted to see that so many Isle of Man-based companies have won their respective categories in these awards.

John Greenwood John Greenwood, CEO at Creechurch Capital shares his thoughts on the latest news at Creechurch Capital and how the Isle of Man, its businesses and people continue to sustain THEIR position as strong international playerS.

It’s been an excellent month at Creechurch Capital as we’ve picked up an award for the ‘Best in Class for Boutique Wealth Management Services’ in the Professional Adviser International Fund & Product Awards. The awards honour firms in the financial services industry offering the best products and services across borders. Creechurch was up against more than 70 entries to this year’s awards from a wide range of companies in the offshore sector and we were humbled and proud to see the Creechurch name in lights alongside far more established and bigger brands that ours. The awards were judged on a range of attributes including transparency and ease of use, as well as appropriateness and flexibility of products and services. My vision when we launched Creechurch less than three years ago was that we’d stand our ground as a boutique wealth manager yet compete against the best the world has to offer. This is testament to the fact we’re working well towards this goal and as an island with a small population, the Isle of Man consistently punches above its weight in business and sport on an international level. In the same way, this is why we’ve extended our support for the Isle of Man Sporting Excellence Programme which has been extended for a further 12 months to

assist Manx sports stars shine on a global stage at 2014’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The announcement was made by Dame Kelly Holmes during the final event of the programme’s first year in June. The programme has delivered a range of inspirational master classes and workshops to raise the aspirations of local sporting talent.

As an Island with a small population, the Isle of Man consistently punches above its weight in business and sport on an international level.

As well as external initiatives like the Isle of Man Sporting Excellence Programme, we combine our business success with our own committed programme. This provides support for the next generation of local sporting talent as they strive to achieve their dreams and has been realised through the success of our Creechurch Sports Academy.

Jonny Bellis The second local recipient Jonny Bellis needs little introduction, his story is well known and he is lucky to be alive today after a life threatening motorcycle accident in Italy almost claimed his life in September 2009. He suffered serious head injuries in the incident and was kept in an induced coma for several weeks. At only 24 years of age, Jonny has a long career ahead of him and is intent on regaining the form that gave him a bronze medal in the 2007 World U23 Road Race Championships and made him the youngest road rider at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, along with many other successes on both road and track. Jonny is determined to get his cycling career back on track and moved to Belgium where he has joined the ILLI-Bikes team. John Greenwood said: “In our line of business, we regularly meet clients who have been very fortunate in life. Jonny was heartbreakingly unlucky when he had his accident. “His story really struck a chord with us, and many more across the Island. It also provided us with the inspiration for the Creechurch Sports Academy. This is our small commitment to invest in the future talent of the sports industry.”

YASMIN INGHAM Yasmin is a major success story for the academy and the island after she was crowned British Champion, winning the Charles Owen British Championship, which was held at Brand Hall. The event is attended by the top British pony riders from across the UK. The championship has produced a number of young riders that have gone on to become Olympic stars. Yasmin and her pony Craig Mor Tom competed over the three days and finished the competition with a total score of 38.8 penalty points, which gave them the championship and crowned them British National Pony champions.

Greeba-based Yasmin Ingham was crowned British National Pony Champion. This outstanding result means Yasmin can look forward to competing at the highest level, with the forthcoming European Championships on the horizon and then the pinnacle of any athlete’s career, the Olympic Games.

Yasmin has now gained entry to the Barbury International Horse Trails, which is the most prestigious event in the Pony Championship calendar and is attended by members of the British Olympic squad. This event forms part of the GB team selection trial for this summer’s Pony European Championships due to be held in Italy.

Yasmin forms part of the newly established Creechurch Sports Academy. The academy sees the company sponsor a selection of handpicked and promising young stars.

Creechurch Sports Academy Highlights Daniel Lloyd

W Charlotte Wild

Daniel and Charlotte The two UK recipients of the Creechurch Sports Academy are Daniel Lloyd who is competing in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and has had five podium finishes, including a win, so far this season and 21-year-old Charlotte Wild, who has just finished runner up in the Fourqeuex Ladies open in Paris, which is part of this year’s Ladies European Golf Tour.

Not forgetting Nico… To truly embrace the firm’s international reach (and following a pull on John’s heartstrings!), the Academy extended its support to 7-year-old Spanish go-karter, Nico Lavery. He has a passion for motorsport and since the age of only two has been driving quads and bikes. This year, thanks to the Sports Academy, he has entered his first major competition. He’s one to watch!

SMP PARTNERS’ FUND ADMINISTRATION BUSINESS MERGES WITH CHAMBERLAIN FUND SERVICES SMP Partners recently announce the merger of the businesses of SMP Fund Services Ltd with Chamberlain Fund Services Ltd. The transaction was completed on 3 June 2013 and the combined business will trade under the SMP Fund Services Ltd banner. Chamberlain was set up in 2004 by its three principals, Keith Corkill, Elizabeth Tansell and Robert Eastham to provide high quality fund administration services to a global market. Since 2004, Chamberlain has developed a globally focused client base and administers a wide range of funds investing in securities, derivatives, and private equity portfolios. The combined businesses will administer a full range of Isle of Man fund types including Experienced, Specialist, Exempt, Regulated, AIM listed companies and overseas schemes as well as providing Isle of Man managed manager facilities. This merger represents a joining together of two of the island’s most respected fund administration businesses and demonstrates the ambition of SMP Partners to grow the Group both organically and through a targeted merger and acquisition strategy focussed on high quality businesses and management teams. The merger represents a significant step forward for the Group in the development of its fund administration business. The SMP Partners Group is one of the Isle of Man’s leading providers of professional services and now employs over one hundred and sixty people in its Isle of Man headquarters and offices in Hong Kong and Zurich. With roots stretching back to 1980, the Group offers corporate, trust, accounting, tax, fund administration and capital market related services to a well-established portfolio of international corporate, private and professional clients. Independently owned by its directors, the Group was established following a management buyout in June 2007. Commenting on the merger, Steve McGowan, Chairman of SMP Partners said: “I am very pleased to announce this transaction

DEPARTMENT HELPS TO DEVELOP LOCAL IT SKILLS The Information Systems Division (ISD) of the Department of Economic Development is seeking two trainee IT (Information Technology) staff as part of its commitment to developing increased IT skills on the Island. The Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK said: ‘The Isle of Man has a world-class Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure and related businesses including e-gaming and software development which offer substantial growth opportunities. ‘One of the key challenges the sector faces is in recruiting skilled staff. Several businesses are struggling to find sufficient skilled IT staff; this is the case across Europe. My Department is working with the private sector – particularly the Chamber of Commerce and the Manx ICT Association – and the Department of Education and Children to determine the specific IT needs of local businesses so we can help to meet those needs through education, training and recruitment, which will both help to grow our economy and create great career opportunities for local people. To that end, last week

which fits perfectly within our strategy for the growth and development of the Group. Following the management buyout in 2007 we identified that fund administration business was complementary to the Group’s service offering and had significant potential for growth. Recently, as the market has started to improve, we have seen an increase in client activity and new enquiries. The merger with Chamberlain and their team will greatly enhance our fund administration credentials and service offering and bring very significant benefit and value to our current and future clients.” “The strategy behind this transaction is to reinforce the position of SMP Partners as one of the Isle of Man’s leading provider of professional services and provide additional resource and expertise to our Group to allow for further planned growth.” “Chamberlain is a highly successful business with a dedicated, highly professional and knowledgeable team. Combine that with the expertise across our wider Group and we create a significant force in the fund administration industry – from specialist advice, tax and VAT consultancy, corporate services and provision of officers through to on-going administration, accounting and book-keeping – all delivered seamlessly. In summary, our fund administration business is now positioned to offer the most knowledgeable and comprehensive service available.” Keith Corkill and Liz Tansell, Directors of Chamberlain, commented, “We are delighted to have concluded this deal with SMP Partners which we consider will create one of the Isle of Man’s leading providers of fund administration and professional services. SMP have been professional and sensitive to the needs of the clients and employees of Chamberlain and we look forward to working with the SMP team”

we commenced a survey of the IT skills needs of local businesses. In addition, my Department has created two trainee posts as one year limited term appointments, which will provide opportunities for school or college leavers to start their career in IT. These posts will offer trainees valuable experience across a range of IT disciplines and so help them make that key first step on the career ladder. I believe the ICT sector offers substantial growth potential for the Isle of Man and my Department will be taking further steps to support this growth.’ Although there will be no guarantee of employment at the end of the one year term, the trainees will have developed the necessary skills and experience to be considered suitable for many IT vacancies that will arise within the public and private sectors. Political Member with responsibility for ISD Tony Wild MLC said: ‘These roles are a great opportunity for two individuals to gain valuable and marketable experience which will help them find suitable employment within the Isle of Man and helps provide much needed ICT experience into the market place.’ www.gov.im/isleofman/employment.xml isle of man premier magazine

This year the judges selected two winners and the bank was also recognised in a new category as Best in Class for Integrated Banking Service. The bank has now accumulated 22 outright wins and 18 highly commended awards under a spellbinding 13-year unbroken record of winning achievements at these prestigious industry awards. The awards, which are now in their 14th year, are in honour of firms in the financial services industry offering products and services across borders. There were over 70 entries to this year’s awards from a wide range of companies in the offshore sector. Judged by an independent panel of industry practitioners and experts, the judging process involves both quantitative and qualitative assessments. Greg Horton, managing director at Nedbank Private Wealth, said: “I am delighted we have been recognised at these awards for another year as it provides such a sound endorsement of our

team’s consistency and ongoing commitment to our clients and our business. Acknowledgement such as this reinforces our solid reputation under our new Nedbank Private Wealth brand. “To also be recognised as Best in Class for Integrated Banking Service unquestionably reaffirms our position as one of the leading integrated banking and wealth management businesses. Total holdings on Focus, our integrated banking and investment platform, continue to grow strongly and were up a further 6% in the first quarter of 2013, having comfortably passed through the £2 billion (US$3 billion) mark for the first time.” In judging the entries, the award panel takes into account the growth of the business, its distribution model, product range, support to target markets and level of service. Recent training, technology and product enhancements are also considered. This year saw the introduction of an online voting facility, whereby practitioners could vote for their favourite offshore provider, as well as new Best in Class Awards for entries that shone in specific areas.

NEDGROUP FUND MANX TELECOM MANAGER APPOINTMENT APPOINTS NEW RETAIL CREATES STRONG MANAGER GLOBAL LINK THE appointment of a new fund manager by Nedgroup Investments has created a strong business and investment link between the Isle of Man, South Africa and the United States. This newly established link with the United States has seen them appoint Los Angelesbased First Pacific Advisors (FPA) to manage the Nedgroup Investments Global Balanced Fund; a fund that has produced impressive results during the global financial crisis. The Global Balanced Fund forms part of Nedgroup’s International ‘Best of Breed’ range, an approach that sees Nedgroup partner with specialist fund managers. Nedgroup’s investment team research, select and monitor managers on an ongoing basis to ensure that they have the best fund choices available. FPA takes over management on June 17th, which will coincide with a change of name for the fund to the Nedgroup Investments Global Flexible Fund. At the same time the name of the South African based feeder fund will be similarly renamed the Nedgroup Investments Global Flexible Feeder Fund. “This is a very positive move for the fund and for our investors,” said Nedgroup Investments’ Managing Director Andrew Lodge. “FPA is an experienced fund manager with an excellent track record. We have monitored FPA’s performance for a long period, and found them to be of the highest quality. We had no hesitation in appointing FPA to manage our Global Flexible Fund.” The appointment of FPA also coincides with the 21st anniversary of Nedgroup Investments being established in the Isle of Man, having first opened its offices in 1992. “This is an important landmark for Nedgroup Investments in the Isle of Man,” added Andrew Lodge. “It signals a new era in the history of the company, and the appointment of a new fund manager emphasises the importance of identifying and utilising the skills of the most highly skilled professionals from anywhere in the world.”

H.G. Equestrian Hannah Goodby T

Hannah has a passion for all things equine. Here at Gallery, we do too! That’s why, from next month’s edition, Hannah will be providing us with a regular feature covering everything, from how to get started, to where you can ride and keep your horse. She’ll also give us a rundown on training exercises, dish out equipment reviews and update us on the equine apparel that’s racing into mainstream fashion.

his month, lets learn about Hannah and her pride and joy, ‘Monty’s Star’. Hannah has lived on the Island all of her life - 29 years in total - and now runs H.G. Equestrian, her own riding and teaching business. We trotted (and love a pun…) along to meet with Hannah and explore article ideas. Lets find out a bit more about her:

Gallery: “Is this your first foray into the world of writing for a publication?” Hannah: “Yes, indeed it is. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to be writing for Gallery on a regular basis and I’m hoping I can provide the readers with an insight into the vast and interesting world of equestrian activity on-Island. Hopefully, I might inspire some to take up equestrian sport, or come back to it after a period of time out.” Gallery: “What’s your background? How did you become so involved with these regal creatures?” Hannah: “Well, it all started with my mother, she worked at a riding school from an early age and enjoyed competing with their horses in local events. Then one day - in the summer of ’69 - a group of handsome young men came over for the TT and turned up at the school to go pony trekking. Mum clearly made an impression on one of them. That man was my future Dad, he moved over from Norwich shortly afterwards. My eldest sister Rebecca was born, followed by Carolyn and my brother Patrick, then I was born some 10 years after that. At which point, the garage was converted to a small stable much to Dad’s dismay - and a very naughty little Shetland pony called ‘Jenny Wren’ arrived. Jenny’s party trick was to break into the house through the back door and pinch bananas from the fruit bowl! Still, I owe a lot to Jenny because she taught me that ponies are by no means easy.

Patrick rode successfully for a few years before deciding mountain bikes and football were much more interesting! Boys will be boys! Rebecca and Carolyn went on to be very successful in local events of all disciplines on ponies and eventually onto horses. It was at these shows I was inspired by watching horses and riders sore over huge fences, people clapping and beautiful rosettes being given out whilst pretending to be the next champion on my hobby horse (that I still have). Riding was in my veins.” Gallery: “What sacrifices did you have to make to pursue show jumping?” Hannah: “Horses are a big commitment. It doesn’t matter if you are tired, unwell or the weather is cold, your horses need looking after morning noon and night! This meant evenings and weekends were spent riding or

Hannah: “Oh, there’s been so many! I was in the UK and just about to enter the main arena at a county show, the bell went and I started my round by clearing the first jump, the commentator announced: “Could you please stop, there is a dog in the arena. Oh! There are two now. Could the owner please come down to the arena immediately and collect them.” To my horror I realised they were my own! They had followed me down from the lorry to the arena!” Gallery: “What’s the worst injury you’ve picked up and how?” Hannah: “Overall, I’ve been quite lucky. I’ve had lots of bumps and bruises but only ever broken my nose and the worst one, my collarbone. That happened when I was 11.

my family. It was an amazing experience and the atmosphere was incredible. Thousands of people silently and intently watching and hoping that the British would win gold, and when they did, there was complete jubilation. I’ll never forget it.” Gallery: “When did you decide that you wanted to teach others how to ride?” Hannah: “From a very early age I knew what that wanted to teach and work with horses. So now with H.G. Equestrian, I enjoy coaching people of all ages and standards, whether it’s just for fun or to help achieve a specific goal. I also have the opportunity to ride and train various different horses, which keeps me on my toes.” Gallery: “What are your current goals and ambitions?”

I’m hoping I can provide the readers with an insight into the vast and interesting world of equestrian activity on-Island.

competing or occasionally bunking of school to bath the pony for the show the next day. There wasn’t much time for anything else, it certainly effected my social life outside of the horses but I don’t feel I have missed out and wouldn’t have it any other way!

I was at a competition in the UK when my pony slipped on take-off over a fence. As she fell, I came off to the side and landed on my shoulder. That resulted in an ambulance trip to the hospital, where I was advised to take 12 weeks out.

If you want to succeed in show jumping, as with any other sport, then you have to be committed and make a few sacrifices along the way to get to where you want to be.”

All I’ll say is that I spent some time mastering the art of riding one handed in a sling.”

Gallery: “If you had to pick a favourite ride, which horse was it and why?”

Hannah: “As long as you’re fit and healthy, age is an asset. Obviously, you have more experience from which to draw upon. I refer you back to my childhood hero, John Whittaker! At the age of 57, he is still very much at the top of his game.

Hannah: “In my junior days, ‘Lucky Strider’, who we purchased for just £750 when she was 16 years young, paved the way for me to progress up through the show jumping grades. With regard to horses, I’ve been lucky enough to ride and compete on some outstanding animals. I have great memories competing ‘Proto’ and ‘Juror’ for Mrs Osborne and the Conrhenny Stud holds, but it’s my current horse ‘Monty’s Star’ who I own and compete with now. He has to be my horse of a lifetime. I have owned him for 14 years and competed all over the UK at various major championships alongside international and Olympic riders.” Gallery: “Does ‘Monty’s Star’ have any special party tricks or traits you can tell us about?” Hannah: “He neighs at me asking for treats and if I don’t give him any he unzips my pockets to check for them!” Gallery: “What’s the funniest moment you’ve experienced whilst competing?” because quality matters

Gallery: “When is a show jumper’s peak? Or does age not really matter?”

When you look at the Olympic team, we had several members of the team in their 20’s, then others in their 50’s. However, raw talent (and a good pairing of rider and horse) means that youth can still have an edge over the elder statesman. Just look at the recent champions tour in London, Ben Mayer won at the age of 29.” Gallery: “And dare I ask if sex matters?” Hannah: “Show jumping is one of the few sports where men and women can compete as equals. That being said, men probably do have a slight upper hand, as it is a physical sport, despite impressions. A bit of extra male strength can be beneficial when handling a horse in certain instances.” Gallery: “Did you manage to see any of the show jumping at the Olympics? What was the atmosphere like?”

Hannah: “I’d like to continue competing with ‘Monty’s Star’ until he reaches ‘grade A’. He’s not far away now, and at that point ‘Monty’s Star’ can officially retire (although he probably won’t want to). Then I’ll be on the lookout for a young horse to bring up through the grades again.”

Manx Telecom Parish Walk 2013 ONE OF THE BEST IN ITS 100 YEAR HISTORY - was how Manx Telecom Race Director Ray Cox described this year’s centenary event – and few who took part would disagree.

84

This year marked the 100th anniversary of the event in its current format and everyone who reached the Santon checkpoint or beyond received 100th Manx Telecom Parish Walk commemorative medals. Manx Telecom CEO Mike Dee said: “Once again the Manx Telecom Parish Walk was a great celebration of our Island community. Thanks to everyone who took part, all of the spectators along the route who cheered on the participants and provided feed stations, and the organising team and the many volunteers who make the event possible.” www.parishwalk.com

The Postman’s Walk One of the more difficult challenges on the course is The Postman’s Walk. This is one of the higher sections, as well as being one of the more technical challenges. You have to make your way through the ropes one foot at a time, balancing on small vertically supported logs. This one can really catch you out so you have to concentrate and watch your hands and feet at all times. It’s great fun and you’ll have a sense of achievement when you make it across! because quality matters

Zip Wires

Monkey tree climb

The three zip wires within the family park are of different speeds. The second zip has a quick landing point on a platform built on the side of a tree. Kids and adults love the thrill of trying to hit that perfect landing when they touch down on the platform at some speed.

Dates have been announced for the Isle of Man leg of The Queen’s Baton Relay in the build up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The relay will visit every nation and territory of the Commonwealth and symbolically unites the two billion citizens of the Commonwealth in a celebration of sport, diversity and peace. The baton, which will be created especially for Glasgow 2014, will begin its journey on October 9 this year at Buckingham Palace, when Her Majesty The Queen will place her message to the Commonwealth inside the baton. The baton will arrive on the Isle of Man on May 16, 2014. It will be here for two days, details of the exact route have yet to be finalised.

For the third successive year, Celton Manx has sponsored the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK charity golf day.

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games may be just over a year away, but Team Isle of Man already has its first champion. Manx Telecom is the first of 10 Island businesses to become a Team Isle of Man Champion as part of an initiative to help raise funds to send a strong team to Glasgow. The campaign will also raise awareness of the Games, and celebrate the sense of national pride that we will all share next July when Team Isle of Man takes part in the opening ceremony and is seen by millions of TV viewers around the world.

The event was held at Mount Murray golf club on Thursday, June 20th, to raise money for the fund set up 20 years ago in memory of legendary footballer Bobby Moore OBE, who died from bowel cancer aged just 51. Among the entrants were football legends Perry Groves, the former Arsenal player, Steve Perryman, best remembered for his Tottenham Hotspur successes, Graham Roberts, retired footballer and manager, and Erik Thorstvedt, the Norwegian exprofessional goalkeeper.

The Jaguar F-Type

The latest set of wheels are taken for a spin It’s been a long wait, but finally it’s here. Jaguar’s F-Type has had one of the longest build-ups of any car in recent years, but all the hype now has to stop and the car itself is required to do the talking. Jaguar says the F-Type is its first ‘proper’ sports car in 52 years, and as the name suggests, it has to follow in the footsteps of the E-Type. Massive shoes to fill, of course, but view one alongside the other and you can see lineage, not pastiche. The F-Type nods to its great-grandparent in the cut-off nose and high rear deck, but it’s a thoroughly modern design. It pulls the neat trick of looking sensational in a range of colours and the option of light or dark wheels gives extra scope for tailoring. Looks-wise, it’s a solid-gold hit. And it’s clever with it, being sculpted out of aluminium just like the bigger XJ saloon,

90

which helps to keep the weight down while remaining as strong as a conventional steel structure, and ups the recyclability too.

A row of straightforward switches, the familiar Jag touchscreen and neat new climate controls complete the job.

It’s a convertible only, of course, but the wise decision to stick with a fabric roof means a 12-second raising or lowering routine and no unsightly design compromises. It’s a strict two-seater and the boot is modest, but you could fit a generous weekend’s luggage in there without having to skimp.

The joystick-like gear lever encourages you to ‘fire’ it when selecting ‘Drive’ by pushing the trigger-like button; a clever ploy to get you in the mood.

Approach the door and you press a button to pop out the flush-fitting door handle - a feature that keeps the overall design slick - and drop into the driver’s seat. It’s snug but not cramped, and aside from the button-covered steering wheel, the cabin is a lesson in simplicity.

The three-model range comprises of the F-Type V6, F-Type V6S and the top V8S. But there’s no such thing as an ‘entry-level’ model here. The only thing telling them apart is a discreet badge front and rear plus quad exhaust pipes on the V8S. Fire it up and there is a surprisingly strident crackle from the exhaust, another area where there has been effort expended to deliver the right kind of feel.

isle of man premier magazine

hardware

Set off in the standard V6 and there’s an instant feeling of ‘rightness’. The steering is quick and accurate but smooth, the ride quality is immediately impressive while remaining in firm touch with the road. Left to its own devices, the eight-speed automatic shifts quickly and smoothly and you can surf along on the generous torque. It’s sporty, but it’s still a Jaguar. It won’t be long before you want to up the pace and you have a choice in how you go about this. A simple squeeze of the accelerator releases another chunk of torque while the gearbox will shift down if required, but ideally you’ll hit the switch to put it into ‘Dynamic’ mode. Depending on the model, this opens up the exhaust, sharpens throttle and gearbox response, stiffens the suspension and reduces assistance to the steering. The most dramatic change comes in the noise from the exhaust. Squeeze the accelerator hard and you get a sophisticated but vocal rasp, and when you back off there’s half-a-dozen loud crackles too. You’ll do it on purpose just to hear it over and over. Smooth and effortless though it is, the F-Type really shines when pressing on. The surety of its responses instils plenty of confidence, and as you start to push it harder through

challenging bends, it just keeps on gripping, staying flat and controlled whatever the surface is doing. It deals with broken surfaces remarkably well, but you can tweak all the individual Dynamic settings and soften the suspension again if desired. Even if you don’t, it’s never harsh. It’s unquestionably fast too. The F-Type starts with 335bhp, and if you’ve never sampled the more powerful versions, you’d think it was plenty. With eight gears to flick through, the supercharged V6 spins up quickly and always has torque to spare. But if you can spare the extra cash, the 375bhp of the V6S is welcome. On the other hand, the V8S is a monster; the chassis is more than capable of coping with almost 490bhp, and the resulting acceleration, speed and noise are truly breathtaking - it’s a devilish delight. We’ve waited patiently for the F-Type and been thoroughly primed for its arrival, but the truth is Jaguar has delivered a truly superb car. It has the looks and performance beyond what you might hope for, but better than that, it also rides superbly, is easy to use and has some smart design too. For sports cars at least, 2013 belongs to Jaguar.

BREAKING NEWS It’s back, and it’s bigger than ever. Each month Gallery will bring you the latest from the automotive news hotwire, straight into your eyeballs.

ONE MILLIONTH JEEP WRANGLER BUILT

Last month a chap named Mauro Pino drove a black Jeep Wrangler JK Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition due for a customer in Flordia from the Ohio production line. This kind of thing happens every day, except this particular Wrangler was the one millionth one to be built at the plant, which has been building all things Wrangler for the past 8 years.

AUDI RS4 AVANT IS OFFICIALLY BRILLIANT

It is said that art is subjective and that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but what exactly is it that makes these three examples good, bad and just plain ugly respectively? The Citroën 2CV ‘Picasso’ was created by Andy Saunders, world-renowned sculptor of cars hailing from Dorset and is pure art, with a rationale. The Citroën Saxo, middle, however, is an example of what inspired the article to the left - thousands upon thousands of pounds spent on a small luke-warm hatchback designed for aspiring young drivers and the final example? Well, I’m not even sure what it is, although it looks like a hybridisation of an Audi TT, Shelby Series 1. BMW Z3 and a Silver Spirit, to name but a few. On wheels from a VW Beach Buggy. Is it just art for art’s sake? Is it even art? I’ll let you decide - art is subjective after all.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Honest John, well respected fictional internet personality has announced that these are brilliant, and with a massive V8 and room for almost anything you might care to carry at up to 193mph (double delimited version) who are we to argue? I’d also really like to test drive one for Gallery. Hint hint. Buy one, buy one now.

COLD FEET FOR ASTON MARTIN OWNERS?

MG BRIBES PUBLIC WITH M&S VOUCHER

This isn’t just any test drive offer. This is a Chinese backed, revived badge ten pound M&S ‘dine in for two’ test drive offer. Personally, I fear that the stakes aren’t high enough, unless you’re homeless, hungry and have absolutely no shame. Or you’re wearing a wig. Either way, if you did happen to be in the market for an MG6 you can pick one up from as little as £199 per month and they’ll even give you tickets and some branded British Touring Car Championship clobber, if that’s your bag.

RENAULT GIVES YOU... SPOILERS?

Celebrating their third Formula 1 Constructors’ world title, Renault and Red Bull Racing have teamed up outside of the dizzying world of DRS and dominatrixes to create a special edition Megane RenaultSport finished in twilight blue and platinum grey with Red Bull Racing detailing, Recaro seats, fancy Bridgestone tyres and version 2.0 of the on-board RS Monitor, which means you can view lap times, performance telemetry and G-Force readouts as well as download them to a USB dongle for analysis. And to brag to your mates down at the pub, of course. They’re only building 30 of them so if you’re after one you had better get a deposit down quicker than a Megane 265 Trophy around the Nordschleife. (You’ve got 8 minutes, 7.97 seconds, by the way)

Renault is available from Bagot Road Garage, tel. 815120

In the literal sense, I mean, because this CC100 Speedster concept has gaping holes for doors. A tribute to 100 years of the brand, it looks mad in the best way.

MISCELLANEOUS Laura Costard’s random selection of news and stories for this month,

BREAST IS BEST?

Myleene Klass has revealed that her family - even the grown-ups enjoy drinking her breast milk in their tea. Apparently it’s “normal” to the TV presenter and singer as her father used to enjoy his tea with a dash of breast milk. So, to continue the family tradition, Miss Klass, 35, not only offers it to her own family, but her friends as well! “I made everyone try mine. It tastes just like those probiotic yogurt drinks. Sweet - not as sweet as condensed milk. "I grew up knowing that he did that so it's not weird to me. I sound like a happyclappy hippy. Oh well, now you know. We're that kind of family.”

LOOK TWICE

A billboard ad for a kettle in California is going viral after a driver pointed out its resemblance to Adolf Hitler. The motorist took a photo of the giant JC Penney advert in Los Angeles, and posted it on Reddit. The $40 'Bells and Whistles' kettle's handles looks like it is the fuhrer's side parting, the lid his moustache and the spout could even resemble a Nazi salute."I saw this yesterday and my boyfriend told me I was crazy, now I feel better that I'm not the only one who saw this," commented user 4lavalencia. Tishacombs added: "I stare at this from my office building every day and now I can tell my co-workers that I'm not the only one who saw the Hitler in the bells and whistles sign!"

VIRGIN HAIR...

A New York man is trying to sell his 27ins long 'virgin' hair - but says he won't chop it off unless he gets a good price. The seller, in his early 30s, claims on Craigslist: "My radical hair is not cut yet. It can be cut to your specifications. "My hair is 100% virgin hair. It has never been dyed, permed, or chemically altered." And he boasts that the hair is 'jet black, the way a raven shines in the moonlight, the color of a deep dark sleep'. He also assures would-be buyers that he never uses straighteners, curlers or hot rollers and always lets it dry naturally. And the man, who describes himself as a nonsmoker who 'says no to drugs', said he would not sell his locks unless he received a high enough offer. "Only serious offer please," he says. "I will not sell my hair if I do not get a high enough offer."

STEP INTO THEIR SHOES

Two men were left screaming in agony after volunteering to 'experience childbirth' by being attached to a labour pains simulator. Walking confidently into the hospital, one of the men announces to the camera: "According to women, childbirth is the worst kind of pain there is? "But did you know according to men, women exaggerate everything?" As their amused wives look on, the pair grimace as the intensity of electrodes to replicate the contractions the fake labour pains slowly increase. Covering their faces with pillows, the two men are filmed screaming and kicking their legs in apparent agony. “Mum if anything that I just experienced is anywhere close to what I did to you all those years ago, I'm sorry, you're like a superhero!” said one at the end of the ordeal. HITCH ‘EM UP

Polycell has designed special underpants to stop 'unsightly cracks' from showing. The aptly named PolyPants have a higher, more secure waistband to protect the wearer's modesty. It comes as the company, which manufactures Polyfilla, has commissioned research revealing that 55% of adults admit to accidentally showing their bums in public. From those surveyed, 61% of men admitted to offending with builders perceived as the biggest culprits. However, a small percentage of over 55's (7%) admitted they actually felt 'cool' when they showed off their bums. With the average Brit is apparently exposed to a ‘builder’s bum’ more than three times a week, Polycell Senior Brand Manager Samantha Balloch said: "Polycell is campaigning to rid the nation of unsightly cracks.”
