hat a fantastic sun-run we’ve had so far. Now we’ve hit August we start to cherish every minute of light we can set our beady little eyes on. There are also those familiar sounds and smells in the air. Strimmer and tractor engines firing up at strange hours, happy diners clinking glasses, watered gardens and the smell of fresh cut lawns and that unforgettable aroma of smoky BBQ meats! Or at least there was when we went to print. Let’s hope the month ahead continues to bless us with sunshine. This month, Gallery magazine focuses on all things BUILD. We get things going in our own unique way in the Upfront section. We feature Emily with Ruby & Ryan in Me & My Pet this month and showcase the Douglas Carnival 2014 in pictures on pages 20-21. In the Events section we highlight the wedding of Lisa & Chris on pages 28-29 and in our Culture section we feature Sunset BLVD and interview the guys and girls from Stage Door Entertainment in My Name is. We have recipes from Local girl Jessica Ledger from Boo’s Little Kitchen for you to try at home and we introduce you to Bangkok Thai Restaurant on Bucks Road, Douglas. In the Fashion section we show you how to build the perfect look for the summer and our renegade photographer shows off some of his sublime summer shots just for you.
And we’re not finished there. Gallery always seeks to provide you with a higher percentage of quality, readable and entertaining editorial in each issue and August is no different. We’ve got a feature on helping nature rebuild itself; a quality travel piece on Gloucester flying with Citywing, a very busy Paparazzi Section and of course all the regular features you’ve grown to love: Upload, Property, Sport and lots more... For best results, enjoy this issue of Gallery magazine in the sun surrounded by good company!

WILKINS WATCH of the MONTH RAYMOND WEIL FOUNDED IN GENEVA IN 1976, RAYMOND WEIL IS ONE OF THE LAST REMAINING SWISS INDEPENDENT FAMILY-OWNED AND FAMILY-OPERATED WATCHMAKING COMPANIES. Music has always been at the centre of the RAYMOND WEIL universe. This is borne out by the names of the Brand’s collections — taken from famous operas such as Nabucco and Parsifal, or with musical connotations, such as Maestro or Jasmine — and the various musical partnerships RAYMOND WEIL has signed with iconic musical venues, exclusive musical awards ceremonies, live music platforms and music related charities. This year, following in the footsteps of the great composers, RAYMOND WEIL presents its new TOCCATA. With this entry collection, the Brand intends to promote its watchmaking know-how among a wider audience, respecting the tradition handed down from generation to generation within this family company. The notes of this TOCCATA ring out among the most beautiful creations of the music-loving watchmaker. RAYMOND WEIL pays homage to the source of its inspiration right from the beginning, by celebrating the one who is behind every great musical work – the composer. Quality finish and sober design, the TOCCATA embodies the brand’s boldness and creativity. The tempo of this collection reflects the presence of gents and ladies models, which are distinguished by their elegant simplicity and timeless style. With this launch, RAYMOND WEIL is developing the entry price segment of its collection, while maintaining production quality and precision. Musically, this collection is celebrating the artistic spirit behind every creation, whether in watchmaking or in music.

RAYMOND WEIL - TOCCATA
Equipped with a quartz movement, TOCCATA combines subtlety accessibility and quality. The beautifully rounded case is available in 29, 39 and 42mm diameters in steel or yellow gold PVD coated steel. The refinement of the case and its pure lines blend harmoniously with the rounded sapphire crystal, the hallmark of this collection. The dials display a simple but precise musical score under the baton of the orchestra’s conductor, which sweeps back and forth incessantly over the indexes or Roman numerals. The model with a black galvanic dial and matching leather strap or steel bracelet exudes a rare elegance. The grand finale of this score is an all steel model with a satin-sunray silver dial, punctuated with a small seconds at 6 o’clock, classic and yet contemporary. STEEL ON LEATHER STRAP BLACK DIAL WITH SMALL SECOND
STEEL ON STEEL BLUE DIAL
Timeless and refined, Toccata proves beauty is not always fleeting. The deep blue dial stands out on the steel bezel and bracelet. A date function is situated at 3 o’clock.
The simple and harmonious style of this Toccata is associated with timeless materials like steel and leather. The thin steel indexes stand out on the black dial and the seconds are displayed in a subdial at 6 o’clock. The date is visible through a window at 3 o’clock.
STEEL ON STEEL GREY DIAL
The uncluttered beauty of this Toccata watch will impress men on whom time holds no dominion. Simplicity is of the essence with this watch that offers a clean 42mm grey dial and a steel body. A discreet date window is situated at 3 o’clock.
Its ever-fashionable and yet elegant style is timeless and will not date.

THE MOST TALENTED PEOPLE IN HISTORY HAVE BEEN ARCHITECTS, SCULPTORS OR DESIGNERS Leonardo; Michelangelo; Raphael - not just sewer-dwelling vigilantes but some of the brightest lights of the European renaissance. Aside from a devotion to the teachings of Master Splinter, one thing these creative titans all had in common was that their interest in art and culture spilled over into the practical spheres of architecture and invention. Whole cities evolved into living works of art under the infl uence of these noble spirits, a feat which has yet to be reproduced for what passes as an artist in today’s world. Tracy Emin has never designed a cathedral; the closest thing she’s managed is a tent full of her dirty pants. Banksy hasn’t got a single fountain-lined plaza on his résumé, the only thing Rolf Harris is building is a strong defence case and Damien Hirst probably couldn’t put up a sandcastle without a massive arts council grant. The thing that unites these lesser artists? As children, I believe they owned Etch-A-Sketch and Spirographs rather than Lego or Sticklebricks. Well, maybe not Damien Hirst, he probably started pickling My Little Ponies.
WORDS Grant Runyon ILLUSTRATION Will Bertram
The desire to build is one of a small list of things that separates mankind from monkeys. Other primates are content to weave a bed out of twigs and grass or, at best, hide under a pile of cardboard boxes, but it is only Homo Sapiens who has raised his eyes above the forest floor and yearned to construct a stairway to the heavens. The history of civilisation revolves around these proud monuments to the human spirit. Picture the mournful swelling of the Taj Mahal’s iconic dome, the martial grandeur of Rome’s Colosseum, the third floor of Marks & Spencer’s Car Park; these are the things that separate us from the beasts, and the people who live in the Channel Islands. Little humans, themselves often no more than filthy, screeching apes, often experience the desire to build even before they learn to talk. I like to think this is the moment when they first glimpse a momentary understanding of the higher purpose to which all creativity strives, but it’s just as likely that they have yet to master the coordination necessary to crawl across the room and smear their own poop across the wall. If you look at it like that, a child trying to make a seesaw out of Duplo is a truly beautiful thing.

THE BEST TIME OF YEAR IS… LK: The summer. I love to be outside! AT: Christmas! I’m very much a ‘family and friends’ man and to spend it with the people that mean the most to you makes this a very special time of year. KS: Springtime after the hour goes forward; longer days, new growth and baby animals.
THE LEGO SET IS A METAPHOR FOR ALL FUTURE ENDEAVOURS
As kids get older, most abandon construction and invention in favour of shouting and breaking things somebody else has built. This is a shame - whilst many animals make noise and kick things, only humanity has the potential to build a functional replica of London Bridge with Meccano. Those with the spirit to build are a minority even within our species, which is why they should be honoured. Civilisation has need of those with the patience to assemble a Lego Death Star, whereas people who are more interested in poop smearing will only ever be truly useful if our fate rests on the need for their equivalent skill in making stinky, unpleasant Facebook comments. Join me in saluting the builders of the future, although obviously I mean metaphorical rather than actual builders. I hope Lego doesn’t teach kids how to stop work every fifteen minutes, read The Sun with their shirts and overcharge you for a sack of gravel.
MY JOB IS… LK: Director and Co-founder of Stage Door Entertainment AT: Trainee Portfolio Manager with Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management as well as Director and Co-founder of Stage Door Entertainment KS: Freelance opera singer, vocal coach, Director and Cofounder of Stage Door Entertainment and full time mummy to Alexis (4) and Dominic (4 months) THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD WOULD BE… LK: Working with my best friends, doing something I love while being a full time mummy... Oh wait that is my job! AT: Whilst I also enjoy working with these ladies, I would love to be a professional international rugby player for the Springboks! KS: Working with friends, being creative, nurturing talent in others and still being a full time mummy – basically what I do know!
The talent to build a Meccano ferris wheel may be a rare one amongst humans but there’s one talent which is unfortunately less unusual, and that is the talent to build more humans. We’re all at it, fi lling up the available space on this planet with useless babies who will grow up to want semi-detached houses and a parking space near the o ce. Who will build these semi-detached houses? It is only through the talents of the builders and planners that all these new people have enough food and anywhere to live that isn’t a fi lthy bolthole underneath some rocks. Without the sort of people who play with Meccano and train sets, we would doubtless descend into incest and cannibalism within a matter of months. Yes, parents - the child assembling a farmyard scene is the agriculturalist of the future; the Playdough baker will grow up to bake loaves to feed the hungry. It’s true that the ones who prefer GeoMag and KNEX might end up wearing white coats and accidentally designing a new kind of nuclear weapon, but it’s still better to grow up wanting an apocalypse button in your Lego bunker than whatever it is the Furby-owning child will be playing with outside when the bomb goes.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
IF I COULD HAVE ONE QUESTION ANSWERED IN THE WORLD IT WOULD BE… LK: What is the point of wasps? AT: Why isn’t phonetic spelled the way it sounds? KS: Why is everything that tastes good bad for you?
On Saturday 19th July, Douglas Carnival made its spectacular return to the capital after more than 15 years’ absence...
BUILDING THINGS IS THE ONLY SENSIBLE RESPONSE TO OVERPOPULATION
Birds, beavers, ants and badgers also build, but humanity does it best. Without buildings you don’t have society, you just have a bunch of people sat around getting sunburned and trying not to get eaten by lions. One day somebody had the bright idea of building a wall out of stones and mud and thirty thousand years later you have symphonic music, hospitals and the George Foreman Grill. Lions remain where they belong - either outside being hunted by rich people, or in a zoo, surrounded by walls. Take that, lions. A child enclosing Spongebob within a tower of protective plasticbricks is responding to this same inherent instinct - the desire to protect, to order, to civilise. This is wonderful, but do consult a braindoctor if you come home and little Alfie has covered the bedroom carpet with miniature concrete towers, imposing stadiums and tiny statues of himself invading Lego-Poland.
THE BEST ADVICE I’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS… LK: Take the time to do one thing for yourself every day, even if it’s just something small. AT: Think before you speak KS: Life isn’t a rehearsal – take every opportunity and always be your best
Lisa Kreisky, Kristene Sutcliffe and Alex and, together, we Toohey are Stage Door Entertai nment!
Many modern toys seem purposely designed to stunt a child’s fragile mind. The ownership of a Furby teaches them nothing about the future, other than that society fi nds annoying noises and garish colours somehow endearing. This is only useful if you intend to grow up into Lady Gaga or the star of a TV show about Essex. Lego, on the other hand, teaches us lessons about planning and perseverance the minute we fi rst open the packaging. A child will soon learn that, although Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Academy is pictured on the outside of the box, the contents are seventy six bags of anonymous bricks and the promise of hours of work. They will learn to wield the strongest magic of all - imagination, and possibly some very dangerous curses. Harry Potter Lego contains the lesson that magic isn’t real, but that achieving anything in life is complicated, laborious and extremely painful if somebody leaves sharp bits of plastic hidden in the carpet.
BUILDING MAKES SOCIETY POSSIBLE
IF I COULD BE A CELEBRITY FOR A DAY, IT WOULD BE… LK: Heston Blumenthal. His experiments are amazing! Or maybe Dynamo. That guy is magic! AT: Only one contender here – Elvis Presley; during his Las Vegas years. I’ve been very lucky to have been to Graceland (Elvis’s home) three times and met Priscilla Presley – if I could even experience his life for HALF a day that would be incredible. KS: Elsa from Frozen……’Let it go, let it go!’ Yes I know she’s a cartoon character but if Alex can be someone dead then I figure I can be someone animated.

As we hit the midway point of festival season, here at RL360° our thoughts have turned to some of the music acts who have performed on Manx soil. In recent years the Villa Marina stage has seen shows from huge names such as Robert Plant, Alice Cooper, Robin Gibb and Brian Wilson, and next month the first family of pop, The Jacksons, will take their rightful place on the list. But top musicians entertaining Manx audiences is not a new phenomenon and, with that in mind, we’ve scanned the last few decades to put together our list of (in no particular order) the top 10 biggest names to have played the Isle of Man.

EXPERIENCE MUSIC PROJECT, FUTURE MUSEUM, Seattle
With its sinuous curves, sci-fi paraphernalia and must-see musical exhibitions, a trip to the greatly talked about Experience Music Project in Seattle is a little like travelling forward in time. In fact, you half expect to see flying cars whilst in the midst of this dramatic building, which can only be accessed by monorail.
FRANK GEHRY
With three major new projects opening around the world this year, the illustrious architect Frank Gehry has once again put his stamp on our ever-changing skyline. In fact, he’s made such an impression; one city has applauded him by creating an entire cocktail list in his honour.
COCKTAILS IN BARCELONA
Take a trip to Barcelona’s vibrant waterfront, where appreciating Gehry’s ‘Peix’ fish sculpture isn’t the only attraction on the horizon – the nearby Hotel Arts boasts a list of celebratory cocktails all in the architect’s name. Served in the aptly christened Frank’s Bar, you’ll find everything from a Bertita Margarita (named after the architect’s wife Berta), to several other equally pleasing architectural-enthused concoctions inspired by the designer himself, including the must-try Panama Bacardi – a taste-tantalising mixture of mango puree and ginger ale.

ART AND LV, Paris
Thankfully, with the monthly theme of ‘Build’, we were presented with the perfect opportunity to take a closer look. From soaring shards of glass to unconventionally shaped living capsules and various ridiculous feats of engineering, a trip to any one of these cities will guarantee an insight into some of the most original constructions around.
THE KINKS (The Lido, 11 August, 1966)/ Ray Davies (Villa Marina, 7 June, 2005) Featuring the talents of brothers Ray and Dave Davies, The Kinks are for many the quintessential British band and their influence has spanned several decades. Known for such classics as All Day and All of the Night, Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset and Lola, it was a reflection of their enduring popularity that Ray Davies packed out the Villa Marina some 40 years after he had first performed in the Island.
QUEEN (The Lido, 26 March, 1974) Led by flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury, Queen’s music has also stood the test of time. Sadly, Freddie is no longer with us but there will be many Manx residents who will recall a vibrant and energetic show by one of the world’s bestselling bands performing before they really hit the big time.
THE ROLLING STONES
THE MEDIA HARBOUR, Düsseldorf
(The Lido, 13 August, 1964) A youthful Mick and Co played The Lido in 1964 and opened with Not Fade Away. No-one
Once a major port, Düsseldorf’s harbour now stands as a German fashion hub. It’s also undergone an impressive makeover. Alongside the listed wrought-iron railings and quaint quay walls, what’s been dubbed the Media Harbour is now home to a handful of bars, clubs and of course, Gehry’s twisted high-rises.
Whilst in Barcelona, it’s highly recommended that you visit at least one of Antoni Gaudí’s peculiar pieces. Using oriental techniques and neo-Gothic art, Gaudi’s many astounding architectural masterpieces showcase an organic style inspired by natural forms. As well as being one of the most imaginative houses in the history of architecture, La Pedrera is more of a sculpture as opposed to a mere building. The exterior boasts a harmonious mass of undulating stone, which along with the forged iron balconies reveals the irregularities of the natural world.

The top 10 biggest names to have
Often compared to an alien hive, the sleek and reflective Louis Vuitton Foundation is somewhat of a talking point in Paris, and it’s here that Gehry’s found a new voice in the shape of the perfect mix of fashion and art. Premeditated to appear like a floating ship, complete with its very own glass sails, this futuristic creation can be found on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne. Inside, you’ll find a number of equally contemporary works by various artists around the globe.
Just when we’d got used to the astonishing height of the Burj Khalifa and its reign in the tallest building’s race to the sky, along come several new and inconceivable architectural contenders. But how many people does it really take to envision, design and shape an avantgarde, and overly eccentric edifice?

ON THE SUBJECT OF PANAMA…
It’s been almost three million years since a series of planet-changing ecological events took place in what’s now Panama. The republic’s Biomuseo is a must-visit for those wishing to learn a little more about the impact the Panamanian isthmus has had on the world’s biodiversity. By contrast, the ten years it took to plan, construct and erect Gehry’s brilliant construction, which sits adjacent to the famous canal, is just a flicker.

WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR 2014… We have already had such a busy year so far. We began the year by bringing Kerry Ellis, Star of many West End productions including Wicked and We Will Rock You to the Island to perform at the Gaiety Theatre. Kerry also held a singing workshop earlier in the day for some of the lucky, and very talented, local musical theatre performers. We have also performed on the Hebridean Princess, a small luxurious cruise ship that has also been home to the British Royal Family, which visited the Island earlier this year. Towards the end of last year we staged a sell-out concert titled ‘A Night at the Musicals’ at the Erin Arts Centre and we are happy to be back there on 8 November this year with another show – ‘The Magic of Disney in Concert’. However, what has been of huge honour to us is that we have been commissioned by the Isle of Man Arts Council to produce a concert to be staged at the Villa Marina celebrating the ‘Island of Culture’. This is going to be a huge spectacle incorporating many of the Island’s talented singers, dancers, musicians, designers, artists; you name it we’ve got it – we expect this to be a sell –out evening and with over 100 local performers and we are in no doubt that all in attendance will feel incredibly proud to live on this tiny, talented Island of ours.

there that night could possibly have guessed the band would still be going strong 50 years later. the Island as a boy and even wrote about it in the song Happy Jack. In 2007 The Who headlined the very first Peel Bay Festival with a hugely successful show, nearly 40 years to the day since they made their Manx debut at The Lido.
(Noble’s Park, 16 June, 2011) Known these days for his superb shows in Las Vegas, Elton does continue to tour worldwide and Manx fans had a very special solo performance from the legendary singer songwriter. Noble’s Park area may be associated with the TT and many other sporting events, but for one night in June Elton-mania took over.
AC/DC (The Lido, 20 June, 1976)
PINK FLOYD (The Lido, 18 July, 1967) The psychedelic rockers Pink Floyd were yet another top British band to make the journey across the Irish Sea. The group’s second single See Emily Play had been released just a month before their performance on 16 June 1967 and their breakthrough album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn was released in August 1967.
The powerhouse rock band loved by fans of all ages performed in the Isle of Man back in 1976. It was yet more proof that The Lido was an important venue for touring bands. Like The Stones, AC/DC are still a force to be reckoned with.

T REX (The Lido, 12 July, 1975) The 60s/70s glam rock giants formed by singer/ songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan kicked off their latest tour at The Lido in 1975. Sadly Bolan was killed in a car accident just two years later but he left a legacy of great tunes, including Children of the Revolution, Get It On and 20th Century Boy.
MEATLOAF (The Bowl, 1990) The larger-than-life singer performed at The Bowl prior to beginning work on the sequel to Bat Out of Hell. Meat’s fortunes have soared and occasionally dipped over the years but the Isle of Man gig was a chance to see a true multimillion selling rock titan up close.

The desire to build is one of a small list of things that separates Mankind from Monkeys. Other Primates are content to weave a bed out of twigs and grass or, at best, hide under a pile of cardboard boxes, but it is only Homo Sapiens who have raised their eyes above the forest floor and yearned to construct a stairway to the heavens.
BUILDING MAKES SOCIETY POSSIBLE Birds, beavers, ants and badgers also build, but humanity does it best.

Whole cities evolved into living works of art under the influence of these noble spirits, a feat which has yet to be reproduced for what passes as an artist in today’s world.
THE LEGO SET IS A METAPHOR FOR ALL FUTURE ENDEAVOURS Many modern toys seem purposely designed to stunt a child’s fragile mind. The ownership of a Furby teaches them nothing about the future, other than that society finds annoying noises and garish colours somehow endearing. This is only useful if you intend to grow up into Lady Gaga or the star of a TV show about Essex. Lego, on the other hand, teaches us lessons about planning and perseverance the minute we first open the packaging.
BUILDING THINGS IS THE ONLY SENSIBLE RESPONSE TO OVERPOPULATION The talent to build a Meccano ferris wheel may be a rare one amongst humans but there’s one talent which is unfortunately less unusual, and that is the talent to build more humans. We’re all at it, filling up the available space on this planet with useless babies who will grow up to want semi-detached houses and a parking space near the house. Who will build these semi-detached houses? It is only through the talents of the builders and planners that all these new people have enough food and anywhere to live that isn’t a filthy bolthole underneath some rocks.

THE CURRENT AFFAIRS PANEL
CURRENT KPMG
Welcome, dear reader, to Current Affairs; your chance to pose any number of questions to the Island’s business community.
I have just set up a business, what annual income tax filing deadlines do I need to know about?
There are two sets of important tax filing deadlines; one for self-employed persons, and one for a company. A self-employed Manx resident individual must declare their taxable profits in their personal income tax return. This tax return is always completed in respect of the tax year ended 5 April; however, the individual can choose any accounting year end date for their business - it does not need to be 5 April.
CLARE KELLY,
Manager, KPMG
ALEX MCNEE,
Director, Boston Limited
In general, the taxable profits to be included in the personal tax return are those arising in the accounting period which ends within that tax year. However, the Income Tax Division’s guidance note GN 4 (available on their website) contains other detailed rules. Irrespective of the taxable profit to be included, you need to submit it to the Tax Office by 6 October following the end of the tax year. An Isle of Man company must file an annual tax return. The first tax return period will commence from the date of incorporation. Generally speaking, the tax return period will end on the earlier of the first anniversary of incorporation and the accounting year end. A tax return cannot cover a period of more than 12 months. The tax return must be filed within one year and one day after the end of the accounting period. Any tax due in relation to the year is also due to be paid by this date.

Why are so many local businesses opening an office in Malta?
What is the Digital Currency incubator?
It’s not just local businesses, but also those operating from other international finance centres that are looking at Malta as an additional home.
The Isle of Man is in pole position, due to its positive and pro-business stance, to win the competition for presence, jobs and opportunities in the emerging digital currency sector. Digital currencies, the best known of which is BitCoin, are in explosive growth mode and are creating tens of millions of pounds worth of jobs, investment and technology every month.
In years gone by, Isle of Man and Channel Islands based CSPs looked towards either Cyprus or Malta. As with Jersey and Guernsey, the Isle of Man is outside the EU. For those in the financial services industry, being inside the EU when dealing with EU citizens or EU based corporates can bring certain advantages. Malta appears to have won the credibility race when looking at an EU base following the not too distant issues with the Cypriot banking system. For a lot of businesses, the decision to base offices in Malta is more of a diversification strategy or “safety play”, rather than one of growth. However, being able to offer services to new markets from another well regulated jurisdiction will, for most, be an opportunity to grow outside of their traditional markets. The most obvious example of this recently was the flood of Isle of Man and Guernsey pension providers to Malta when the UK started to look closely at the QROPS offerings. Whilst a number of jurisdictions may have been challenged, Malta was not one of them. Malta is keen to attract a diverse range of industries and I am sure it is not lost on those here on the Island that, as well as offering the traditional financial services, they have a booming marine and aviation industry as well as a growing e-Gaming sector.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Supported by government, a group of private sector companies has banded together to create an unbeatable proposition for companies interested in moving to the island, starting with three possible locations for office/work space (Britannia House, Hamblin or Skanco) at discounted or zero rents, technical advantages such as ultra high speed broadband, and hosting and engineering consulting, which are bundled at very low prices during the start-up phase. Professional service providers such as lawyers, accountants, tax advisors, CSPs, and payments consultants are all offering free initial advice and structuring. Recruitment is also covered with a low flat-fee headhunting offer. The bundle offers an incoming investor or company the opportunity to “suck it and see” on the island at a very low cost and with very limited financial risk. We are extremely confident that, having once set up here, businesses will prove to be “sticky” and, having liked the experience, stay here contributing to our economic growth.
UTOPIA
How will the prom restoration project going on in Douglas affect your business?
So, the promenade restoration programme slowly starts to gather pace. We, along with several other businesses in central Douglas, have to a certain degree suffered a down-turn in footfall due to roads being dug up and the disruption has taken far longer to complete than initially discussed. The impact on our salon is difficult to measure, but in the several months we have operated from Walpole Avenue the road has been closed, or not usable, for sixteen weeks. I know the work needs to be done and the local community has been very tolerant, but these roads have been dug up time and time again because different utilities have their own agendas. I dare say that in any other part of the world this current government would have been overthrown for less! Based on current performances, I have absolutely no worry at all of the restoration having an impact on my Castlemona salon. By the time the road works reach that part of the promenade I’ll be an OAP. That said, whichever of our robot overlords does run the salon will, I’m sure, benefit from a ‘gateway to the capital’ that improves footfall and utilises proper parking facilities, invites new business and will be sustainable for many more decades to come. This is a fantastic opportunity for Douglas based businesses to use the improved infrastructure the restoration will provide to adapt to a new and maturing local market. Let’s just hope they get the roads right the first time round!
It is still open for other companies to join the incubator offering. They must have a world class product and be able to offer it at a jawdroppingly low price. And it must, of course, be relevant.

IT S E L F. . . D IL U B E R AT U R E H E L P IN G N WORDS Dave Evans
Rewilding might be a fairly new word, but its concept is as old as the earth itself. Its aim is to ultimately make and keep the planet healthy, and better equipped to combat the effects humans are having on the environment. Rewilding is conservation on a continental scale, which aims to restore and protect natural processes and critical wilderness areas. Not only does it seek to protect and enhance these areas, but it aims to link these areas through a network of wildlife corridors – genetic viability is crucial to all forms of life. It aims to restore balance through the re-introduction of animals which have disappeared from their original habitats at the hand of man. It tends to be a top down approach, and in Western Europe this means Wolves , Bears and Lynx. All three are making a small come-back in parts of Western Europe, some by design some by chance. Lynx (Lynx lynx) have been re-introduced to many parts of Western Europe. Populations now exist in the Pyrenees, Vosges and Alps amongst others. The Brown Bear (Ursus arctos arctos) is present in the Pyrenees, although this very small population is
16
made up almost entirely of bears imported from Slovenia after the native bears were wiped out. A slightly healthier population survive in regions of Italy occasionally crossing into Switzerland and Austria. The Wolf (Canis lupus lupus) once prevalent across all of Western Europe (including the UK), was eventually confined to a small surviving population of around 100 in the Apennine mountains of Italy. With the advent of a hunting ban on these animals (courtesy of the Bern convention), the wolves slowly started recolonising former territories in some parts of Western Europe. Closer to home this includes France where there are now an estimated 250 wolves present, and while most are confined to the mountainous regions a wolf was recently detected within 150km of Paris. It is unlikely we will spot one wandering up King Street anytime soon though (you might spot a few cougars).
Surprisingly though, the healthiest populations of these predators in Western Europe are in Spain. Home of the package holiday, Sangria and the Costa del Sol, however once off the beaten track Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe. The Lynx now number about 300, from a low of around 90. The Cantabrian Brown Bears now number 200+ from a low of around 50 individuals, and is a great success story for Spanish wildlife. Most astonishingly though, the Iberian Wolf population is estimated at 2000 individuals (they aren’t the easiest animals to try and count). Now while the news that there are 2000 peckish wolves roaming around Spain might be enough to make those folk in Benidorm grab their towels and scarper, there really is no need. You need to head about 500 miles North to be in with a very remote chance of seeing one of these elusive animals. This is a land of snowcapped mountains, forested hills and lush green valleys, very different to what many expect Spain to be.

THE IMPORTANCE OF US HELPING AND LETTING THESE “ ECO-SYSTEMS REBUILD THEMSELVES THOUGH IS VERY
EVIDENT, AND SOMETHING WE ARE ONLY JUST BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE. GIVEN THE CHANCE NATURE CAN WORK VERY FAST, AND THE RESULTS WILL BENEFIT US ALL AND FUTURE GENERATIONS
”
So what difference does it make having these animals around? Well it’s something ecologists refer to as “trophic cascade” this refers to powerful indirect interactions that can control entire ecosystems. Trophic cascades occur when predators limit the density and behaviour of their prey, which in turn then affects the next lower trophic level. Put simply, if a deer thinks it might get eaten by a wolf, its behaviour changes (this is not limited to running away very fast while tripping up the deer next to it). The deer in ecosystems where wolves are present become more mobile, they stay out of the valleys and other places where they would be easy prey. This in turns allows the valleys which were once over grazed to re-generate, which in turn benefits the birds and rodents and all number of insect life. The shrubs and small trees which once would have been grazed down now get a chance to grow, providing yet more suitable habitat and food for animals, birds and insects. In turn the trees and shrubs hold the soil of hills and riverbanks together which prevents erosion. These trees and
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
shrubs absorb carbon dioxide and give us back oxygen. A long line of animals of all shapes and sizes queue up to finish off the remains of wolf kills, nothing goes to waste, and everything is recycled in nature’s perfect system. The wolves also prey predominantly on the weak or sick animals, which means only the fittest animals survive to pass on their genes to the next generation (the opposite to human hunters who want to kill the biggest and fittest). Native Americans referred to the wolves as doctors of the forest, as they recognised the role they played in keeping the prey populations healthy and free of disease. This is just a small example of the affects these animals can have, which in turn affect us and the world we live in.
live-stock farming in these areas, such as livestock guardian dogs, electric fences and animals being brought in at night, all of which are not always readily acceptable. Tolerance, education and understanding are key. The importance of us helping and letting these eco-systems rebuild themselves though is very evident, and something we are only just beginning to understand and appreciate. Given the chance nature can work very fast, and the results will benefit us all and future generations. It might just be that in order to allow this rewilding to happen that we first need to rewild ourselves and connect with where we came from, and where we are going to. . . .
Sounds good eh? Unfortunately it is not without its problems, old ideologies which drove these animals to the brink still exist in many areas. Predators are also opportunistic, and an easy snack of a fenced in sheep or cow is rarely passed up. It means a return to older methods of

GIVE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE RECEIVES BOOST THANKS TO PLUMB AND PARTS CENTER
DOUGLAS RUFC TEAM WINS
Plumb and Parts Center has donated £570 to support the vital work of the children’s wing of a hospice on the Isle of Man. Rebecca House provides respite, palliative and end-of-life care for young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, from birth to 18-years-old. The donation was set up by Steve Reed, the Branch Manager of the Plumb and Parts Center on the Isle of Man.
Douglas RUFC claimed victory at the Citywing Plane Pull event, held at its hangar at Ronaldsway on Sunday 6th July, with teams raising money for Citywing’s 2014 charity of the year, Manx Cancer Help. The entrants flexing their muscles were Triumph Group, Southern Police, Robinson’s Fresh Foods, Southern Nomads RUFC, Western Vikings RUFC, Douglas RUFC, SMP Partners, Sleepwell Hotels, Barclays, Isle of Man Prison and Hansard, as well as a children’s team.
RIDE4JACK Pictured are Rosie Gault and Carole Whitfield from Hospice’s fundraising team with Andrew Wright and Graham Mitchell receiving a cheque for £2,380. This amazing amount was raised through the 2 men riding 100 miles to raise funds for the local children’s hospice, Rebecca House. Graham, aged 46 of Glen Maye and his friend, Andrew, aged 30 of Kirk Michael decided to replicate a mountainous stage of the Tour de France. The event was called “Ride for Jack” and involved criss-crossing the island’s highest peaks. In total they rode approximately
100 miles and climbed over 10,000 feet during that day. The men had been touched by the story of a young boy called Jack, who at the age of 5, who sadly died of cancer recently. You can still donate by visiting Just Giving at: www.justgiving.com/RideforJack
Almost all of the teams managed to beat last year’s record time of 16.52 seconds, but Douglas RUFC ultimately triumphed, cheered on by a crowd of spectators. After enjoying sausage and bacon baps, tea and coffee provided free of charge by Sleepwell Hotels, the Douglas rugby union team completed the 34-yard course in an impressive 13.12 seconds, just pipping Southern Nomads RUFC who recorded a time of 13.13 seconds, with last year’s winners Robinsons Fresh Foods coming in third at 13.46 seconds.
They were both delighted to present the amazing amount of £2,380 to the local children’s hospice, In addition they sent £820 to Ronald McDonald House/Alder Hey.
SWAGELOK Swagelok recently took part in a Snaefell summit sleepover to raise funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and the new Breast Unit at Nobles Hospital. Joining 60 others, equally mad, fundraisers, they were all taken back by the beautiful sunrise they were greeted with, overlooking North Barrule. It apparently made up for a damp and foggy night's 'sleep' on the summit with only sleeping bags for warmth and protection! £15,000 is expected to be raised.
KPMG PROMENADE RELAY RUNNING TOTAL ANNOUNCED Close to 400 KPMG Promenade Relay runners and hundreds more spectators took to Douglas Promenade in perfect summer conditions on Friday June 13th to raise over £17,000 for KPMG’s chosen charity of the year, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. Dislikes: Early mornings, smelly litter trays, unhappy kitties-(Ryan every morning). If animal what would you be? Probably a cat- life of leisure. Why did you choose a rescue pet? We wanted to give a kitten a home forever and when we went to the ManxSPCA Ryan and Ruby were too cute and we couldn’t just take one. Kieran wasn’t too keen on getting a kitten, so we compromised and got two. Where do you live on the Island? I live in Peel. Where are you originally from? I have always lived in Peel. What do you do for a living? I am a Marketing Assistant. Do you have any more pets? No, just my two babies. Would you have any more pets? I’d maybe like another cat, or two, but I like just having Ryan and Ruby, Brother and Sister. The best and worst thing about having a pet is..? The best thing is how different their personalities are, and having cuddles of course! The only thing we weren’t counting on was the early mornings! I didn’t realise when we first got the kittens, they would want to wake up and play at 4am!

She feeds us, gives us cuddles and if she’s busy and can’t sit down to cuddle, she lets us sit on her shoulders. We even get to jump up there from the floor although that does scare her sometimes. If you had one wish what would you wish for? An endless supply of Dreamies, catnip toys and endless playtime with the lazer pen!

Sanche
Why is handsome black Sanchez still with us? Don’t you know that black cats are lucky? Sanchez came to us as a stray and he’s a friendly, affectionate boy although he does let you know when he’s bored with being stroked and played with so perhaps wouldn’t be suitable for a life with young children. He loves his food and isn’t a fussy eater – all he wants is something tasty in his bowl. He’s five years old and he’s such a character so please come say hello to him and maybe fall for his good looks and winning personality. Please give sad Sanchez a new life – he’s worth it!
CASPER Casper is a two yesr old Staffie/Pattterdale, a lovely golden boy who is learning to trust again. He loves to play ball and cuddle his teddy bear friend which gives him confidence. He’s gradually learning that people can be his pals and with ongoing training and lots of love he could be just the pet you’re looking for, if you’re an experienced owner who knows how to encourage him to be the loving and playful dog he was born to be. He’s not keen on going to see the Vet but – do you like going to the Dentist? Casper really deserves a second chance of happiness and perhaps that happy life could be with you, he hopes so although he’s such a favourite with Kennel staff that there’ll be tears when he leaves us!.

The Eco-eaters FROM FARM SHOPPERS TO FANS OF FAIRTRADE, FIND OUT WHICH ECO FOODIE TRIBE YOU FALL INTO WITH OUR HANDY SPOTTER’S GUIDE.
THE ORGANIC SHOPPER
Amelia’s swapped the Range Rover for a Prius, and finds it much easier to reverse into those tiny spaces in front of the Organic Shop, even if there’s just no room in the back for her collection of hemp bags for life. Still she knows she’s helping the environment, and can guarantee the collection of nubbly vegetables she buys each week are completely pesticide free – even if they do take an age to peel. Her teenage boys are taking longer to convince, and wish that she would just buy them Coco Pops instead of the usual Organic Moonshine GM-free Flakes that dissolve into mush in their cereal bowl… Seen at: the Organic Shop
THE FAIRTRADE STALWARTS
The Carlton-Smythes are fanatics about Fairtrade produce, and hardly buy anything that doesn’t carry the little green Fairtrade logo. They’re terribly ethical, and often lecture their children over supper (sustainably-sourced fish and chips of course) about the evils of the commercial giants and the poor slave cocoa bean pickers in Africa), so much so that 3-year old Charlie sobs if his nursery doesn’t serve Fairtrade chocolate biscuits for snack. Sophie tries to stick to the Fairtrade section in the supermarket, and always stocks up on Fairtrade brands like her morning coffee, but secretly thinks it doesn’t taste as good as her favourite Douwe Egberts. Spotted at: the Co-op
THE FARM SHOPPER
Amy and Dave are proud to be supporting their island by buying local produce. They try to make their meals as locally-sourced as possible, a fresh crab or two from Robinsons, salad leaves and fresh tomatoes from the farmer down the road, a selection of Manx cheeses and some chutney, or at least that’s what they do in the summer. In the seemingly-endless ‘cauliflower and cabbage’ months of the winter, their principles slip a bit and they gorge on juicy kiwi fruit, bananas and tangerines and try not to think of the food miles… Spotted at: Robinsons
THE HOMEGROWER
Andy dug up the flowerbeds and planted tomatoes, lettuces and aubergines. After a bumper crop the first year, he’s never looked back and now the back garden is a maze of glass cloches, raspberry canes, mini poly tunnels and rhubarb forcers. His long suffering wife has to find ways of cooking all the different vegetables he gets obsessed with growing – the chillies being a particularly painful period. She’s put up with most things, but the hydroponic herb garden she’s just discovered behind her best sheets in the airing cupboard might be the last straw… Spotted at: his allotment and the Royal Manx Show, showing off his giant marrow.
THE EAGER COMPOSTER
Ian and Pam at number 24 thought there was something wrong with their drains for weeks, until they noticed the rotting smell was coming from the new wooden contraption next door. ‘It’s a composter!’ announced their neighbour Brian cheerfully when they called round to investigate. ‘Everything goes in it – potato peelings,
plate scrapings, household waste…’. Living downwind, Ian and Pam could tell. Perhaps it’s a good thing they don’t know about Brian’s plans to build an enormous wormery… right next door to their fence. Spotted at: roadside stalls, trying to sell his bags of pungent home-made compost
THE AMATEUR CHICKEN KEEPER
Perhaps a garden flat in St Helier wasn’t the best place to keep chickens thinks Emma as she tries to avoid doing serious damage to her fingers with the staple gun she’s using to build her Buff Orpingtons a chicken run. Egberta and Eglantine are the two new additions to the family, who’ll keep them in freshly-laid eggs and a tikka masala or two when they get too long in the, er, beak. It’ll be a great learning experience for the kids, she thinks to herself, as she dusts off the brand new Egg-lu that her chickens will call home. Shame she hasn’t noticed the neighbours’ ginger tom looking hungrily at her new purchases over the garden fence. Spotted at: the library, renewing her copy of ‘How to keep your Hens Happy’

MICROGAMING - MANX CANCER HELP GOLF DAY RAISES OVER £8,000 Location - Mount Murray Golf Club | June 2014
The inaugural Microgaming Manx Cancer Help Golf Day was held on June 19th raising a magnificent £8,170 for the charity. Eighteen teams took on the 18 holes of Mount Murray Golf Club and at the finish two were tied on 118 points with the winners Continent8 Technologies - claiming the spoils for winning on the back nine with Lloyds TSB in second and Barclays Bank in third on 114 points. No one managed to ace the 11th hole so the brand new MINI One on offer was returned to Buchanan MINI. However, several
26
spot prizes were won and everyone who participated took home a Microgaming goody bag. The prizes were presented after a buffet in the clubhouse, with one lucky player winning a power caddy in the heads and tails competition. Microgaming donated corporate tickets to any Chelsea match in the 2014/2015 season, which raised a whopping £2,000 in the auction! Manx Cancer Help would like to thank James Toseland ( joint patron for the charity), Microgaming, Buchanan MINI and Allyn Laing at the Mount Murray Golf Shop for their support. OH MY DARLING... Words: Suzy Holland
30.08.2014
THE ISLE OF MAN IS IN FOR A RARE TREAT AT THE END OF AUGUST. NO, NOT MORE MOTORBIKES, BUT A VISIT FROM THE MOST TALENTED DUO IN BRITISH COUNTRY MUSIC – MY DARLING CLEMENTINE. After stunning reviews for their first album, ‘How do you plead’? Lou Dalgleish and Michael Weston-King, the duo otherwise known as My Darling Clementine, released the follow up ‘The Reconciliation?’ late last year to equally fulsome praise and now they are bringing their bitter-sweet, rollicking unashamedly country harmonies here. If you’re a fan of the classic country duets – Johnny Cash and June Carter, Tammy Wynette and George Jones, Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris – then My Darling Clementine should be on your radar and tickets to the show at the Peel Centenary Centre on Saturday 30 August in your pocket. Individually Michael Weston-King and Lou Dalgleish’s musical pedigrees are top notch. Michael is widely seen as one of Britain’s finest singer-songwriters with 10 solo albums and four with The Good Sons under his belt. Always on the road, he’s toured with Nick Cave, John Cale, Guy Clark, Steve Earle – and collaborated with Chris Hillman, Ron Sexsmith and the legendary Townes Van Zandt.
of the Atlantic: “MDC have not made the best British country record ever, they have made the best two!” (Country Music People), “Every song could be mistaken for a classic Nashville standard …” (Americana-uk.com) But this isn’t a low-key acoustic set: Michael and Lou will play with their full band which includes guitarist Martin Belmont (making a welcome return to the Island after appearing here with Los Pistoleros and who’s also played with Graham Parker and the Rumour, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello and the great Johnny Cash, to name but a few), Alan Cook (pedal steel and mandolin) , Liam Grundy on piano and organ, Al Gare (bass) and Neil Bullock (drums).
For her part, Lou has worked with Elvis Costello, Bryan Ferry, The Brodsky Quartet and is quite simply one of the finest female singers around and has released four albums including the acclaimed ‘Live at Ronnie Scotts’.
So if you turn up expecting a couple of old folks sitting on a porch, crying into their beer then I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. There isn’t a stinker on either album - if you’ve ever belted out a karaoke version of ‘Stand By Your Man’ then I highly recommend ‘No matter what Tammy said’ from ‘Reconciliation?’ – and with a set list that also includes some classics and the possibility of Lou’s interpretation of Elvis Costello’s ‘Indoor Fireworks’ – a great time is guaranteed.
Together Michael and Lou are My Darling Clementine and their two albums have received rave reviews and awards on both sides
Tickets £15 from 844443 or online at www.etickets.im/cc www.mydarlingclementinemusic.co.uk
GENESIS GALLERY - Hayley Goodhead Hayley was born in Staffordshire and from a young age all she ever wanted to be was a professional artist. She graduated from The University of Gloucestershire in 2010 with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art and embarked on her personal journey towards artistic recognition, painting during the week and finding inspiration at the weekend working in a gallery. In her second year at university Hayley had received a commission to paint a black Labrador and this had started her on the path towards wildlife and other animal painting. Hayley began to forge a BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
reputation, first in her home town and then nationally. Her stylish images have swiftly become highly sought-after and her creative imagination and unstoppable flow of new ideas suggest that she is a major star in the making. Hayley’s youthful and vibrant style has caused quite a stir amongst contemporary art collectors and her latest collection of Limited Edition artwork can be viewed at Genesis Gallery in Victoria Street, Douglas.

IMAGE A DAY PROJECT REACHES HALFWAY POINT
Artist Juan Moore has reached a milestone: the halfway point in his Image a Day blog for Island of Culture. On the day when he had just uploaded his 182nd image he said: ‘The project has been running now since January 1st and the blog seems to attract anywhere from around 75 to 200 views a day with most people genuinely seeming to like the daily dose of surreal/weird/odd/crazy art I’m inflicting on the world. ‘At present the blog’s had more than 20,000 views from all over the world. I’ve just uploaded image 182 and it very much feels like I’m halfway there. The project has tested me more than I thought it would. Through my work as an illustrator I’m used to working to tight deadlines and as a fine artist I’m used to producing large bodies of work, but the unrelenting nature of the blog is something I was perhaps a bit naïve about when I first pitched the project. Throw in the fact that I’m not only creating an image a day for this project but I’ve also had plenty of illustration work, which is great, preparing work for two exhibitions and teaching part time at the Isle of Man College. I very much feel like I eat, breath and sleep art at the moment and it’s great.’
Giglets is the award-winning company behind the development of SmartReads enhanced ebooks. SmartReads are classic stories by writers like Shakespeare and Dickens that have been shortened, modernised and animated to create interactive learning experiences. Giglets also develops ebooks in Scottish Gaidhlig, Irish and Welsh. This ebook, the translation for which, has been supported by Culture Vannin, is available via iTunes. www.learnmanx.com

STUDENT AMY-BETH WINS ARCHIBALD KNOX SCHOLARSHIP Winner of the prestigious 2014 Archibald Knox Travel Scholarship is 18-year-old Isle of Man College of Further and Higher Education student Amy-Beth Clark. The £3,000 bursary, sponsored by marketing, design and public relations agency Home Strategic, will help with travel costs incurred by Amy-Beth in pursuing her art degree over the next three years. The award was presented during a dinner at the Sefton Hotel organised by the Archibald Knox Society to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the internationally renowned artist who was born on the island. Amy-Beth, who was one of five students shortlisted for the award, will study for her art degree at the College and will be among the first students to work from the old Market Hall in Douglas in the autumn. “The award, based on my work throughout the year, was totally unexpected,” said Amy-Beth, who lives in Peel. “There are a number of galleries I want to visit, including those in France and New York, which will give me the opportunity to meet and talk to artists in those and other countries. The bursary makes all this possible and I’m also really delighted to have won the award named after an artist whose work I very much like and respect.” At the end of each academic year Amy-Beth will be expected to return to give a talk on the places she has travelled to as a result of the Scholarship and its impact on her studying and degree course work. Lee McLellan, business development director at Home Strategic, said the award was an extension to the agency’s successful involvement with work experience opportunities for students from the College.

ISLAND OF CULTURE
I LOVE CULTURE SHOW taps rich seam of local talent A GROUP OF ISLE OF MAN COLLEGE FIRST-YEAR ART AND DESIGN STUDENTS ARE CREATING SOME OF THE COSTUMES FOR ISLAND OF CULTURE’S I LOVE CULTURE SHOW ON SEPTEMBER 20TH AT THE VILLA MARINA, BILLED AS A CELEBRATION OF SOME OF THE FINEST MANX TALENT.
‘The show is a cultural fusion; a mix of traditional but re-imagined Manx themes, legends and myths, combined with all kind of dance - street, tap, folk, funk and contemporary funk - and of course, music - some of which has been specially commissioned.’ said Kristene. ‘The music, the dancing, the palette of colours chosen for the costumes, every element of the show reflects some aspect of Manx heritage.’ As student Millie Smallwood, responsible for creating a pair of glittery fairy wings, explained: ‘We were given free rein to interpret the design brief from Stage Door Entertainment, but were keen to introduce a hint of Manx tartan as accent colours.’
The final reveal will be on the night but expect tutus and organza, sparkles, dramatic masks à la Venice Carnivale, a new take on the sea-god Manannan, capes and corsets, and decorative flourishes in a riot of fairy-like flowers, every one fashioned by hand out of fabric in shades that reflect the colours of the Manx tartan. The show has been devised, arranged and is being produced by Stage Door Entertainment, the three-strong team of experienced performers Lisa Kreisky, Kristene Sutcliffe and Alex Toohey. ‘We don’t want to give too much away in advance,’ said Alex, ‘but it’s going to be a spectacular celebration of the amazing wealth of talent there is in the Island, with a cast of around 200, including Young Actor, Singer and Musician of Mann finalists. ‘Young performers in the Isle of Man have tremendous opportunities to get a good grounding and develop their craft; the show is demanding and we’re asking a lot of all them but given their outstanding capability everyone’s risen to the challenge brilliantly.’
38
Speaking while stitching a tutu student Ariane Monds said: ‘We were provided with the performers’ measurements and met the principal artist but were then left to our own devices. Designing and making the costumes for the show is one of a number of live projects that form part of our course and when the performers saw our ideas they were impressed and really liked them. And ‘corset lady’ Emma Willmott said: ‘We’re a predominantly “girlie” contingent but there is one male, Peter Beaumont who, as well as being in charge of laser cutting for the flower shapes, is very skilled at sewing.’ Alex continued: ‘The show’s artistically and technically sophisticated and will be performed in the round. For some of the artists that’ll be a new experience. It’s quite different from being up on stage; in the round you’re far more exposed. ‘From day one there’s been a shared vision and a genuine will on the part of everyone, including the students at Isle of Man College and the Villa Marina team who couldn’t have been more co-operative, to create something very special.’
Stage Door Entertainment’s Alex Toohey, Lisa Kreisky and Kristene Sutcliffe. Picture Liam Gilman
Kristene observed: ‘It’s been so encouraging that the artists have been so flexible and every one of them feels it’s a real privilege to be involved.’ ‘Dealing with a client, interpreting the design brief and then working collaboratively was something new and very valuable for us,’ said Millie. Reflecting on the project Ariane said: ‘Much of what we’ve had to do proved to be a lot more demanding than we ever imagined, but what’s come out of the project is that we’ve learned how to work as a team. It’s been a really valuable experience.’ Expect a fairy ballet, a new and eerily dramatic take on Manannan, trumpets, strings, jazz and jigs, choirs, excerpts from Les Miserables with Manxman and West End lead Stephen Palfreman, some surprise messages of support, pyrotechnics and much more. Alex said: ‘This is a show that’s not just music, not just dance and not just song…it’s a spectacular in every sense. And it’s our hope that when the show’s over people will leave feeling patriotic and proud to be part of the Isle of Man and be sharing in the Island of Culture celebrations.’ Details of tickets sales will be announced in the near future.

KS: I want to build the ultimate eco house – half underground, huge and luxurious.

The Douglas Arts and Culture Quarter
he Gaiety Theatre, Villa Marina, Villa Marina Arcade and Gardens, Sayle Gallery and the area leading to the Manx Museum are being promoted as the Douglas Arts and Culture Quarter after local illustrator Alice Quayle created a range of publicity material highlighting the quarter’s cultural attractions. Alice said: ‘It just struck me that the whole area made up by the Gaiety, Villa Marina, Villa Arcade and Gardens, the Museum, Sayle Gallery and St Thomas’ Church with its beautiful murals together make a compact, walkable culture quarter, and that if these were promoted together then this could be more of a draw for visitors than any one venue by itself. ‘In many cities or towns it can take hours to get from one venue to another. Here it’s all within a few minutes walk. Also, many towns spend millions on new cultural venues to try to attract visitors whereas we have a stack of them here all together already...we just need to make it a little bit easier for visitors to find them and to find their way around.
44
‘I hope it can be a beneficial long-term project to come out of the Island of Culture celebrations and also usefully tie in with Douglas town centre regeneration plans.’ Alice has created an illustrated map of the area, a leaflet with the map and basic information including opening times and regular events. She has also set up a Facebook page, ‘Douglas Arts and Culture Quarter’ with the map, leaflet and events news. In addition, a promotional film clip may be made.
cultural venues and attractions Douglas has to offer in a compact area in the heart of the capital. The Arts Council has been pleased to support this project and applauds Alice’s creative interpretation, which is both lively and engaging. Importantly the Douglas Arts and Culture Quarter project is a valuable contribution to the legacy of Island of Culture.’ For more information contact Alice Quayle, 307842 or Emma Callin, Isle of Man Arts Council, 694598.
The leaflets will be available at the Sayle Gallery and other cultural venues around the area, as well as from the Welcome Centre. The project has been supported by the Isle of Man Arts Council, VillaGaiety, the Sayle Gallery and Douglas Development. Chairman of the Isle of Man Arts Council Geoff Corkish MBE MLC said: ‘The Douglas Arts and Culture Quarter promotional material will serve as an effective marketing and promotional tool, alerting both visitors and local residents to the wealth of

STAYING OUT FOR THE SUMMER words | Nichole Sweetsur
THE NEW BRONZERS
The latest research on sun damage suggests that even high sun protection factors may not protect against skin cancer. Scientists at Manchester University and London’s Institute of Cancer Research claim that even the highest grade SPF50 sun cream allows enough UV radiation through to damage the DNA in the skin’s pigment cells. The safest tan is a fake one. Self-tan trends for 2014 focus on speed and new tanning formats like the St.Tropez Luxe Dry Oil. It’s easy to use and it gives the skin a natural, glow-gorgeous tan. The oil formula is moisturising, smells good and transforms the whole self-tanning experience into something a little more pampering. £25.00. Boots. Dior Bronze Self-Tanning Oil Natural Glow Spray is a dry oil that slips on like a dream, gives a subtle bronze that doesn’t dry out skin and leaves a

subtle sheen – great for a night out. £29.00. feelunique.com. Another new approach to faking it is the Clarins Radiance Plus Golden Glow Booster. Add a few drops of this little beauty to your regular day or night cream, smooth on evenly and let the natural looking tan develop. Increase or decrease the amount according to the look you want. It’s so simple and so clever. Use it now to get your glow on, and at the end of the summer you’ll use it to prolong your tan. £18.00. Boots. Vita Liberata Rapid Tan Mousse is for the girl who wants to tan and go. It dries quickly and starts to develop after one hour. Wash off for a lighter colour, or for a deeper tan leave it on for a few hours or overnight before showering.

The first Nivea In-Shower Moisturiser launched a little while ago and the brand has recently added more variants to the range. I love the idea of cutting corners in my morning routine without compromising on results so this really appeals. The new NIVEA Sun In-Shower Refreshing After Sun Lotion is only £4.00 and is set to become a 2014 favourite. The In-Shower Body Moisturiser Pampering Honey Skin Conditioner. (£3.56) is delicious smelling and this works brilliantly on legs after shaving too. Generally I prefer body oils to moisturisers and the new Garner Ultimate AntiCellulite Oil is a lovely citrusy addition to the beauty cabinet. I am never totally convinced that topical products will make a huge difference to severely dimpled skin but anything that helps to smooth and tone is a good thing. The lemon, mandarin and

HEAT–PROOF MAKE UP
Make up has a tendency to slip and slide in the warm weather and whilst there are some great long-lasting formulas out there (like the Bobbi Brown Shadow Sticks) rather than investing in new eye make up, buy a new base to help your favourite shadows stay true, all day long. Lancôme La Base Paupières Pro does just that and comes in six shades to suit all skin tones. It’s creamy, yet waterproof and works well as a skin perfector when you just want to rock a bare faced look. Use under an eye-shadow and it will stop your colour creasing or fading. £21.00. HAIR RESCUE
Heat and perspiration do nothing for your hair but I’ve discovered a trio of rescue products from Pantene. The Pantene Pro-V Dry Shampoos absorb excess oils, dirt and grease on the hair and give it a pickme-up. Choose from Refresh, for between washes, Color Savior, which promises to bring back shine and Volume Booster to give hair a little lift. Blondes can go brassy with sun and pool chlorine and the Color Wow Brass Banned Mousse for blondes is a clever idea for summer. It’s alcohol free, so it won’t dry hair that’s likely to be already a little dehydrated and the lavender tint counteracts the brassy tones. £16.50. colorwowhair.com

The film star topped a poll by Pears soap with 26%, closely followed by Kate Middleton (16%), and Grace Kelly (8.4%). The ‘Timeless Beauty’ report was commissioned to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the iconic Pears soap.
Few of us are going wild with the scissors in the salon. According to a survey by Macmillan Cancer Support, 47% of Brits never change their hair. David Beckham retains his crown as the UK’s male hair muse, being voted top male hair crush. ORANGE WRAPPED MACKEREL STUFFED WITH FENNEL INGREDIENTS: 4 local, freshly caught mackerel (de-scaled and gutted but left whole) | 1 fennel bulb (sliced) | 2 large oranges (sliced and skin left on) | 2 tbsp olive oil | salt | freshly ground black pepper and string. (Serves 4-6)
WHAT TO DO: 1. Season the Mackerel all over, in the cavity and outside. Rub all over with olive oil.
2. Stuff the belly of the fish with some fennel and orange slices. You many need to cut up the slices smaller to fit in.
3. With one of the oranges, slice so you have a perfect round piece (not segments or in half moons). This is to wrap around the belly so the stuffing doesn’t escape. Fold over the belly and tie a length of string around the fish to keep the stuffing and orange in place.

4. Lay out the fish and season again. You can now either: - BBQ (10 – 15 minutes) so they are nice and charred and the orange is sweet and sticky. - Put under a piping hot grill for 10 minutes until charred and crisp. - Bake at 200c in a baking tray for 15-20 minutes, until soft and juicy.

CLASSIC ITALIAN CHICKEN PICCATA INGREDIENTS: 4 free-range/organic chicken breasts | Plain flour (for dredging the chicken) | salt & freshly groundblack pepper, | 150g (ish) of butter | 5tbsp olive oil 1 whole lemon (juiced) | 50ml white wine | 125 ml chicken stock | BIG handful of capers (rinsed) | bunch of parsley and some torn basil leaves. (Serves 4)
WHAT TO DO: 1. Get a large piece of cling film onto your work surface. Slap a chicken breast down onto the film and cover with another piece of cling film. Bash the chicken to flatten it with a meat mallet or a rolling pin, so you have a lovely large bit of even chicken. Cut into two pieces. Repeat with the other chicken breasts so you have 8 flattened pieces of chicken. 2. Season the chicken well and then coat in the flour. Shake off any excess. 3. Heat up a large frying pan with 1/3 of the butter and half the olive oil. Fry half the chicken in the bubbly butter & oil for 3-5 minutes and until brown, flip over and cook on the other side again for another 3 – 5 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a plate and repeat the process with the other olive oil, another 1/3 of the butter and chicken.

Add the chicken back to the pan, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. 5. Remove the chicken to a serving dish. Add the remaining 1/3 of butter to the sauce and whisk vigorously. Stir in loads of chopped parsley and the basil and pour over the chicken. Serve. Yum.

SWEET AND STICKY BAKED FIGS WRAPPED IN PARMA HAM WITH GORGONZOLA AND WALNUTS INGREDIENTS: 8 ripe figs | 8 slices of Parma ham | 150g Gorgonzola or an alternative blue cheese if unavailable (crumbled) | 50g walnuts (chopped roughly) | olive oil | 2-3 tbsp runny honey | salt & freshly ground black pepper. (Serves 4)
WHAT TO DO: 1. Preheat your oven to 180c. 2. With a sharp knife, cut a
large cross on the top of each fig and squeeze the base to ‘pop’ open the top of the fig.
3. Stuff each fig generously with some cheese and scatter walnuts over the cheese. 4. Wrap the Parma ham around the outside of the fig (leaving the top open) and use a toothpick to secure if needed. Place the stuffed and wrapped figs in a baking tray.

5. Pour over a spot of olive oil, season well with salt and pepper and lightly drizzle some honey over the top of each fig (not too much as you don’t want it to burn, just so it’s nice and sticky). 6. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 10 – 12 minutes until the ham is golden and the fig and cheese is melting and bubbly, absolutely scrumptious.
Tip: You can either serve alone as a canapé or a light bite or serve with some salad leaves for a beautiful starter.

WORDS | Anne Berry | The Wine Cellar
T
he word winery used to conjure up an image of a content old man sitting in front of what looked like a garage, containing a few wooden barrels, a hosepipe or two, a table for tasting and lots of bottles, some full and others waiting to be filled, next time the mobile bottling unit comes to the village.
With the rapid expansion of wine production in the new world countries, hundreds of new wineries have been established in the last half century. Competition in the market became fierce and more modern wineries have begun to appear in Europe too. It was no longer a matter of building a practical building to house your tanks. With EU grants and rapid expansion of certain regions, e.g.
The fermentation wing is exposed to the outside allowing carbon dioxide to escape naturally and the maturation cellars are built into the ground to keep the temperature and humidity constant. In the middle, there is a viewing area. Tourism has become a significant part of the industry and visitors are invited to view the various processes from the central area, with the visit culminating in a wine tasting in the modern tasting room, lined with slats from recycled wooden barrels. The wine is rich, deep in colour, long lasting, age worthy and perfect with Sunday roast. Portia Prima – Ribera del Duero £21.95
Wineries like that do still exist, albeit slightly more modern. Most will now have temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for fermentation and storage. There is also likely to be a small storage area, possibly in an existing underground cellar, for maturation in wooden barrels. However the owners or vineyard workers may well live on site, above the actual winery, like in the photograph at Poderi Colla in Alba above, where they make excellent Barolo, Poderi Colla Barolo Bussia Dardi le Rose (£31.15) Wine has been produced in Europe for centuries and there are numerous tiny family businesses, which still make wine for local consumption only or they supply grapes to local co-operatives or larger companies, who rely on long term contracts with such growers for their business.
Some look like they have just landed!
Other wineries combine wine production with restaurant and hotel facilities, offering superb accommodation with swimming pool, wine tastings and a top class restaurant e.g. Castello Vicchiomaggio in Tuscany, which is well worth an overnight stay or a short break.
This example of a purpose built winery is Portia, in Ribera del Duero, completed in 2010. Designed by award winning architect, Norman Foster, it allows the winemakers to produce the best wine possible with all the latest equipment and technology, as economically and environmentally friendly as possible. Roads lead on to the roof to allow the grapes to be delivered straight into the reception tank below. Gravity then moves the grapes and wine around the winery, causing as little damage and trauma to them as possible.
The castle here dates back to 1400s and wine is still produced here from the vines grown in the quality vineyards surrounding the building. They make a delicious Chianti Classico Riserva Agostino Petri da Vicchiomaggio £20.95, which can be enjoyed with a variety of foods, including hard cheeses, duck, beef, lamb or venison.
Ribera del Duero in Spain, companies looked to world renowned architects to design their buildings.

The wider Gloucester Quays area offers a wonderful mix of waterside museums, public art, cafés, bars and restaurants, as well as discounted designer shopping at the Gloucester Quays Outlet. Some of the city’s most popular historical sites on the Gloucester 12 list are the beautiful, medieval Gloucester Cathedral, the 15th century St. Mary de Crypt church, and St. Oswald’s Priory, which was built around 900AD. ARCHI-TOUR HOLIDAYS
Just when we’d got used to the astonishing height of the Burj Khalifa and its reign in the tallest building’s race to the sky, along come several new and inconceivable architectural contenders. But how many people does it really take to envision, design and shape an avantgarde, and overly eccentric edifice?
66
Thankfully, with the monthly theme of ‘Build’, we were presented with the perfect opportunity to take a closer look. From soaring shards of glass to unconventionally shaped living capsules and various ridiculous feats of engineering, a trip to any one of these cities will guarantee an insight into some of the most original constructions around.

ART AND LV, Paris
Often compared to an alien hive, the sleek and reflective Louis Vuitton Foundation is somewhat of a talking point in Paris, and it’s here that Gehry’s found a new voice in the shape of the perfect mix of fashion and art. Premeditated to appear like a floating ship, complete with its very own glass sails, this futuristic creation can be found on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne. Inside, you’ll find a number of equally contemporary works by various artists around the globe.
THE MEDIA HARBOUR, Düsseldorf Once a major port, Düsseldorf’s harbour now stands as a German fashion hub. It’s also undergone an impressive makeover. Alongside the listed wrought-iron railings and quaint quay walls, what’s been dubbed the Media Harbour is now home to a handful of bars, clubs and of course, Gehry’s twisted high-rises.
PROVING THE IMPOSSIBLE, Dubai Redefining what is possible in both design and engineering, the Burj Khalifa currently stands as the tallest building in the world. A combination of cutting-edge technologies and cultural influences, this magnificent, awe-inspiring and somewhat intimidating structure serves as a global icon. Located at the core of a new downtown neighbourhood, the Burj’s mixed-use programme is more centralised than any other contemporary development in Dubai, which without doubt, makes it a surefire model for future urban centres! AN EXPENSIVE CHALLENGE, Saudi Arabia! Soon to overshadow the world’s tallest building, Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Tower is set to outshine the Burj Khalifa. Its construction alone poses as an incredible challenge for engineering and architecture. The building, once complete, will stand an impressive 3,280 feet tall! The structure, which has a finish date of 2019, will only cease progress when it reaches the 200th floor. Located in Jeddah, the designer duo behind this far-fetched construction are already world famous for a number of top-level works around the globe. Both Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill Architecture estimate the costs of this project to come in at around $1.2 billion.
CONTEMPORARY OR TRADITIONAL, YOU CHOOSE…
As physical containers for society’s historical documents, academic musings and shared knowledge, libraries have long since assumed an enormous duty. But beyond serving as archives alone, the best libraries also inspire. Housed in architecturally ambitious structures, they are places that rejoice human achievement within awesome environments.
THE ROYAL LIBRARY, Copenhagen
ST. FLORIAN MONASTERY, Sankt Florian Austria
Comprising aspects of both the city and the sea, the library’s central concourse mollifies this construction’s powerful stature. A series of public functions are located at the core of the building, which has been designed to serve as a public assembly space, whilst deeper interior nooks and crannies offer more of an insulated feel.
A masterwork of Baroque architecture, complete with ostentatious carved-wood bookcases and balustrades with gold-plated details. A ceiling fresco by Bartolomeo Altomonte, which was completed in 1747, is perhaps the library’s most astounding feature, which showcases a series of allegorical subjects, all of whom watch over the great room from the clouds.
THE WORLD’S TALLEST WOODEN HOUSE, Russia
What began as a simple two-story wooden structure is now the world’s tallest wooden skyscraper. At 13 stories high and 144 feet tall, this particular architectural feat was built by Nikolai Sutyagin – the owner of a small construction company in Russia. Whilst in jail for supposedly imprisoning a worker in part of the building, his business went to shambles. This strange wooden structure is all that’s left to show of his profession.
THE STAIRWAY TO NOWHERE, Switzerland Not many would have the strength to stomach the mere walk up this totally terrifying stairway, which stands dozens of feet above the ground! Thankfully, it’s not for actual use, it’s instead a concept design by artists and architects Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann. From wooden skyscrapers to recycled utopias, many of these bizarre buildings are the works of a single eccentric individual, whilst others include a long list of cocreators. In many cases, such structures have taken decades or even a lifetime to build – possibly one of the reasons they’re so extraordinary.

GARDEN GADGETS
KING OF THE
GARDEN PARTY Words : Patrick Cunningham
T
his month I shall be reviewing a selection of items that will take your garden party to the next level. With accoutrements like these, your guests will spend their entire visit seething with envy!
Dutchtub This portable tub is seriously cool and, powered by a wood fired convection heater attached to the side, it is portable! Liven up your work office party by sticking one of these in the foyer, or take it down to Cobo to watch the sunset with a pint. Even as a permanent fixture in your garden it would be an immensely popular contraption. For those don’t appreciate bathers there is even a ‘loveseat’ version, designed for two. I wouldn’t take that one down to Cobo. Check out www.weltevree.nl for more info
A Half Pipe
If you are the owner of many hoards of screaming children (and miserable husbands), then this half pipe will provide the perfect distraction for them, allowing you to relax and enjoy the garden party with your mates. The holy grail of toys for both kids and adults alike, your half pipe will turn your garden into the coolest hang out on the block. Just watch out for drunk teenagers and compound fractures, both of which could get you in a lot of trouble.Check out www.
piece for any evening garden party, protecting your carefully manicured lawn from the ravages of the fire above and providing an atmospheric setting for the ghost stories and inevitable heavy drinking that ensue when someone lights a camp fire. Check out www.avantgardenguernsey.com for more info
Forno Toscano Outdoor Pizza Oven
As everyone who has ever cooked pizza knows, it’s all about the oven. This Italian, handmade pizza oven is designed for use outdoors and will turn you into a true pizzaiolo. It burns wood and can reach temperatures of over 400 degrees celsius in just 15-20 minutes. The doughy delights produced by this beast would, I’m sure, be beyond exceptional. Just don’t try that spinny thing with the dough because it will make you look like an idiot. Check out www.williams-sonoma.com for more info
Life Size T-Rex Statue
Now seriously, who wouldn’t want one of these prowling about in their garden? Perfect for the paleontologist in your family, this realistic t-rex statue will be the source of much amusement and educational debate. There may be a small dash of ridicule in there from your more discerning guests, but just think of the educational nous that your kids would gain from this grizzly, life size replica. Probably not great for the younger, more sensitive kids in your

CROWDFUNDING
DOGGIELICIOUS LAUNCHES CROWDFUNDING INITIATIVE TO FINANCE NEW PREMISES AND EXTRA STAFF Although a relatively new concept to many, or unheard of by others, crowdfunding goes as far back as 1884. Here we explore the nature of crowd funding and how it’s being used today by Hollywood blockbusters to local company Doggielicious.
P
ublisher Joseph Pulitzer of New York World, in 1884, asked the public to donate funds to the Statue of Liberty pedestal when the fundraising committee ran out of money. Pulitzer raised, through his newspaper, over $100,000 in just six months. More than 125,000 people contributed, with most donations being $1 or less. And crowdfunding was born. Today there are a number of different online platforms used for crowdfunding. Among these is FundaGeek, (what a great name) designed specifically for funding projects involving technology, scientific research and inventions. Others include Kickstarter used to bring creative projects to life and Indiegogo, an international crowdfunding site launched by a group of friends in the US in 2007. When Veronica Mars, an US neo-noir mystery comedy drama, was unveiled on Kickstarter the campaign quickly gathered momentum as devoted fans emptied their pockets to the tune of $5,702,153, the most ever raised through crowdfunding at the time. Fans that ‘pledged’ $35 or more were promised a digital copy of the film on its Friday 14 March release date. There were 91,858 backers of the film, with more than 50,000 of those donating enough to receive a copy of the movie. However, fans were left disappointed when they discovered that in order to watch the film they first had to register for both Flixster and UltraViolet. The film’s director reportedly apologised, recognising that fans of the movie regularly use other, preferred platforms such as iTunes or Amazon.
Local fast-growing dog treat business Doggielicious has launched a ‘crowdfunding’ initiative as it prepares to expand into new premises and employ extra staff. Doggielicious was launched in 2011 with the ambition of creating high quality dog treats bursting with natural and fresh ingredients, sourced locally where ever possible. From humble beginnings of baking treats for her own dog Amber and her friends’ pets, Alex now supplies shops and customers all over the world. Her range includes treats which boast ingredients like Isle of Man Creameries Manx cheese, Laxey Glen Mills Manx flour, Ratcliffe’s Manx honey and Gelling’s free range Manx eggs. She also includes ingredients such as ginger and garlic, which have been shown to be beneficial to canine health. Doggielicious now needs new premises, including a commercial kitchen and new employees to continue meeting existing demand and allow for expansion into new markets. Doggielicious founder Alex Kennedy has created a page on leading online direct financing platform Indiegogo as she bids to raise £30,000 to fund her expansion plans in just 60 days. Alex explained: ‘I decided to create my own dog treats after realising I couldn’t even pronounce the names of some of the unnecessary ingredients found in massproduced treats. I spoke to local suppliers and dog owners before designing a range of treats using the freshest and most natural ingredients, sourcing as many as
possible from near my home in the Isle of Man, and baking them myself in my own kitchen. ‘Just like me, many dog owners don’t want to feed their pets treats they couldn’t trust and the business quickly took off. My first sales came at a Farmers’ Market on a cold and windy day and now I am receiving orders through my website from dog owners all over the world. ‘I am also supplying shops and stores, including Shoprite here in the Isle of Man.’ She added: ‘I am delighted there has been a steady increase in demand, but I have now reached a point where I need to invest in new premises, a commercial kitchen, and in staffing, to meet that demand and, importantly for the business, explore new opportunities. ‘A number of UK stores have been in touch to discuss stocking Doggielicious products, and there have been inquiries from around the globe. Clearly, there is a great scope for further growth, but I need the facilities and people in place first.’ ‘With Indiegogo people can pledge as little as £10 and there are rewards offered for all levels of contribution. I hope dog lovers, Isle of Man residents and everyone who understands my vision will get involved, and share the Doggielicious message.’ The Doggielicious Indiegog initiative goes live on July 22nd. FOURTH PRESTIGIOUS ‘PRIDE IN THE JOB’ ACCOLADE FOR HERITAGE HOMES SITE MANAGER Heritage Homes and Dandara Managing Director Seamus Nugent said “Mark is a highly experienced senior site manager known for his professionalism and attention to detail. To be nominated for one UK award is a great achievement, but to be chosen for a fourth time really highlights his genuine dedication to his profession, his projects and to his clients.
A Heritage Homes site manager has every reason to hold his head high after winning a prestigious ‘Pride in the Job’ quality award for the fourth time in his career. Mark Patton, who has been employed by the Dandara Group for the last 22 years, has been selected as a ‘Pride in the Job NHBC Single Home Commendation Award’ winner for his work on Wardfell, a luxury three-storey property in Ballasalla.
“As a company, we are extremely proud to have Mark on board as a site manager and wish him every success in the next stage of the competition,” he added. Mark was selected from almost 15,000 site managers and he will now go on to compete in the next round where nominees vie for ‘Seals of Excellence’ or ‘Regional Award’ titles. The winners will be announced at Northern Ireland & Isle of Man Region Pride in the Job Dinner in Belfast in November.
Mark, who specialises in executive developments such as Wardfell, said “It’s great to have been recognised again, not only for myself but also for the company and all of the local tradesmen involved in creating this unique property.” The NHBC is the UK’s leading warranty and insurance provider and standards setter for new build homes in the UK. Now in its 34th year, ‘Pride in the Job’ is regarded as the house-building industry's most prestigious awards programme, of which 450 honours are given throughout the UK. The judging process lasts 18 months, with site managers rigorously scored against 37 pre-set criteria. To win they must score highly for the quality of workmanship at every stage of the build.
Wardfell, which is due for completion in mid-July, is a prestigious private property of some 9,000 sq.ft. set in three acres of grounds. Work began in February 2013 and the property features the highest level of design and specification. Bespoke features include the three internal staircases, customised bathroom suites, feature ceilings throughout, five internal fire places, a cinema room, a guest wing and a lift to the three storeys.
RL360°’S WRAP PROPOSITION WINS AWARD RL360° has been awarded Best in Class for Wrap Proposition in the Professional Adviser International Fund and Product Awards. It is the second year running that RL360° has received the nod for its wrap work. The Best in Class awards are given for a particular element that shone out above all others as the judges considered entries across all classes. RL360° Director of Marketing Natalie Hall said: “We were thrilled to win Best in Class for our wrap work last year, but to have the quality of our proposition confirmed with yet another acknowledgement really shows our commitment to, and success in, this area. The judges were obviously struck by our ability to maintain and build on the high standards we achieved last year. “Wrap remains an important part of RL360°’s strategy and demonstrates our expertise in forging important partnerships.” Now in their 15th year, the Professional Adviser International Fund and Product Awards recognise those at the cutting edge of distributing financial products and services internationally.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Chair of the judging panel, Deborah Benn said: “This year was probably the most closely fought set of awards ever. The quality of entries was particularly high which meat the judges had a real task on their hands in terms of coming up with outright winners. It was interesting to see how entrants are coping with competitive pressures and tackling the continued evolution of the regulatory environment and we will no doubt see what effect new strategies will have on business propositions over the coming year.”

5 WITH A N T S A F USCLE SS PLA BUILD M GENCY FITNE MER STEP E WORDS Jonah Falcon (sports scientist)
It is a proven scientific fact that massive, beefy men with 0.5% body fat are not just vastly more attractive to the opposite sex, but also more prosperous, intelligent and successful at getting scientist types in a headlock until they agree to write exactly what we tell them. I am personally so ripped that my shoulder definition is visible on Google Earth, and the real reason Google is banned in China is that even looking at my swole body from above was messing up the one-child policy. If you’re brave enough to admit you want to be like me, then I hope you’ve been following my last set of fitness tips to the letter and so probably have a body like an airbrushed picture of He-Man. If not, I expect you cry when you look in the mirror at night, and unlike me you don’t do this because you’re so beautiful it hurts. Well, Gallery aren’t paying me to make you feel bad (I do that for free) but rather to shoulder you weaklings like a bag of cement and keep pumping til you’re in better shape. The problem is, this issue hits the streets in August, so if you’re a bro and you’ve not been on a 100% protein shake diet since at least January there’s every chance you’re already embarrassed to take your shirt off on the beach because you’ve got triceps like a famine victim. I’m comfortable de-shirting in Strand Street, in the supermarket, at funerals, and you could be there too if you’d only spent winter shredding instead of sledding. Luckily for you, you don’t have to get on eBay to obtain last-minute tickets to the gun show. There’s been a terrible accident in your fitness regime, but you got picked up by the slambulance and the doctor is about to give your muscles the kiss of life. Nurse, get ready to inject the patient with 300 grammes of protein and an emergency beef transfusion STAT.
Step 1: when it’s too late for regular fitness, it’s time to go extreme You can get acceptable results just by eating less and lifting a lot of weights, but if you want to be certified 100% beef in record time you’re going to need to get involved with a 360 degree fi tness lifestyle programme developed, copyrighted and then marketed by American businessmen. All the trends are big here - Tikkaram Sphincter Yoga, BootyPump, Taebo-Capoe-Jitsu, Pilates Paddlekite boards, Spincycling, Jog of War; but the one I most recommend is HotCrossFit. This targeted programme of posting hashtagged gym pictures of yourself on Facebook has successfully enrolled many people in the Shrediversity, and you probably already know somebody who’s just dying to talk to you about it. They’re like Hare Krishnas who lift. Remember, it doesn’t matter how much you work out - if you don’t get up every morning and repost an inspirational quote about dedication you’ll probably die fat on the toilet like Elvis.

Step 2: regular food is for herbivores, babies and people in intensive care Sport scientists have proven that it is impossible to get fully swole if you just eat normal food. You won’t be nominated for a bro BAFTA by Dame Judi Hench eating normal supermarket fare, you need to adopt a fad diet. How do you know it’s a fad diet? If you have to talk about it to other people, subscribe to a meal planning website or join a Facebook group. Atkins, raw food vegan and the anal juice cleanse plan will all get you a ticket on the tonk train, but Paleo is the best. Paleo was born when archaeologists discovered that some cavemen dealt with knowing that the protein shake wouldn’t be invented for 1 million years by becoming so swole that dinosaurs couldn’t be bothered to eat them. A daily programme of high set, low rep training and a diet of raw chicken is believed to have produced lean caveman gains. The only thing these early bros feared was the dreaded Tyrannosaurus Flex, but science thinks modern Paleo followers are safe because T Rex went extinct when he failed to concentrate on his arms.
Step 3: fitness technology adds cutting edge science to your gains Unlike paleo man, today’s soldier on the battlefield can benefit from thousands of years of scientific progress. Some people might point to antibiotics or the moon rocket as the pinnacle of scientific achievement, but as far as I’m concerned antibiotics are for the animals I eat and the only rocket fuel I need is a creatine energy drink. Where scientists should be most proud is in the realm of proven, 110% efficient fitness technology. It must work, as you can’t lie in a TV infomercial. Where would humanity be without the power plate, home ab cruncher machines and those weird fitness shoes that women think will make their bottoms smaller? Along with the modern marvel that is anabolic steroids, scientists probably play these inventions down as they miss working for Soviet Russia and are ashamed of being too busy in the lab to lift twice daily.
Step 4: never be afraid to show off your fitness regime and lean sexy body Never forget that the object of all this work is a body you can show off, under any circumstances - remember what I said about funerals, there are always chicks there waiting to be put back in a good mood. Some people used to believe in working out in secret, emerging into the light to dazzle their audience like James Brown, Godfather of Swole, but this is a wasted opportunity to show the public your fifty shades of gains. I recommend working out in public as much as humanly possible, whether this is at the busiest time for the gym, lifting weights in front of a window onto the street or simply doing 200 press ups in the toilet paper isle at the supermarket.
Step 5: ignore all safety warnings So-called doctors will tell you that hitting the gym for seven hours a day and living on pure protein will lead to cardiovascular danger and an early death, but I’m a qualified sports nutritionist and I’ll tell you that this kind of advice is why there are so many weak old people about. Take a look at Hulk Hogan - dude is like 90 and the only side effect from years of steroids is a glowing moustache and the ability to bench press two fully loaded wheelchairs. The only medical advice he took is from President Rawnald Reagan, who told the Hulkster that he was a real American and that he could elbow drop Ultimate Warrior with impunity. If you need to get big quick, you need to treat having small muscles like a medical emergency and go hard like day-old porridge. That pounding in your head is nothing but the sound of your body being beaten into submission by the most effective fitness supplement of all: raw willpower.

ACTIVE NEWS MBL SPONSORED GOLF TOURNAMENT BOOSTS HOSPICE FUNDS The second round of the prestigious KHG Funds Senior Open golf tournament - which has MBL Financial as principal sponsor - is coming up on August 7 at Rowany Golf Club. The Island’s premier seniors event comprises three rounds - the first was held at Douglas Golf Course on July 3, with the grand finale being held at Ramsey on September 4. His Excellency Lieutenant Governor Mr Adam Wood will play in the third and final round which will be followed by a buffet and prize presentation. After round one, George Ferguson is leading the men’s Senior category and is the overall tournament leader. Lynda Jackson is the women’s Senior leader. In the Super Seniors categories the men’s and women’s leaders are Calvin Quayle and Pauline Merrill. Following the success of the beat the pro competition in the first round, when the players raised £700 for the tournament’s nominated charity Hospice Isle of Man, the 13th hole at Rowany will be the setting for the players to attempt to raise further funds for the charity. A small issue has presented itself to the organisers of the tournament as Rowany doesn’t have a professional player at the club. Therefore, Creechurch Capital Limited, KHG Funds investment manager, have stepped forward and will provide its own ‘pro’ player from its ranks and they will set the mark that the others have to beat. As in the first round, for every player whose shot beats the pro’s effort, Creechurch will donate £100 to Hospice. Stewart Quayle, Creechurch Capital’s Senior Business Development Manager, joked: “We have sent an email to all the staff to see who will come forward to take the pro shot. However, as our team spend their time in front of screens watching world markets for their clients, rather than time on the golf course, this could be a very rewarding day for Hospice!”

Manx Missile Launches Manx Telecom 4G Network CYCLING SUPERSTAR MARK CAVENDISH MBE has chosen a mobile network which can match his sprinting speed on the bike! Manx Telecom has announced that the fastest man on two wheels is to be an ambassador for the company’s superfast 4G network which goes live on July 29. It is the Island’s first 4G network and delivers speeds up to seven times faster than those currently experienced with the company’s 3G service.
Cavendish will feature in advertising campaigns over the coming months and will use the network when he’s on the Island. Manx Telecom has also provided him with a 4G smartphone to keep in touch with friends and family while travelling around the world. The ‘Manx Missile’ is a big fan of social media, so having the latest smartphone and best network will also help him to update Twitter and Facebook accounts on which he has a combined total of more than one million followers. Cavendish said: “A fast and reliable mobile network is essential for me to be able to keep in touch when I’m travelling to and from races – so I’m delighted to be an ambassador for Manx Telecom’s fantastic new 4G service. It’s also great to be associated with a company which is at the heart of Island life and a loyal supporter of so many community events and organisations – including the Manx Road Club which competes as Team Manx Telecom, and the Manx Telecom End2End Mountain Bike Challenge.”
The Manx Road Club has been sponsored by the Island’s leading telecoms company since 2008 – Cavendish joined the club as a youngster and is still a member. David Smith, Manx Telecom Marketing Director, commented: “Mark’s reputation as the fastest man on two wheels, and the fact that he has done so much to raise the Isle of Man’s profile on the world stage, make him the ideal choice as our 4G ambassador. With our 4G network enabling live streaming of HD TV – and with a predicted 95% population coverage – Cav’s fans will be able to watch his victories wherever they are on the Island from now on. And for our customers already on pay monthly smartphone plans with a 4G ready handset there will be no extra cost – so everyone’s a winner with MT 4G!” The partnership between Cavendish and Manx Telecom also reflects the company’s role as a Team Isle of Man Champion – a fundraising initiative which supports the Island’s Commonwealth Games team. In
2006 he won gold in the scratch race to become only the third Manx competitor to be crowned a Commonwealth Games champion. He also competed in the 2010 Games in Delhi and was selected to represent Team Isle of Man at the Glasgow 2014 Games which begin on July 23. However, he suffered a shoulder injury in a crash at the end of the first stage of the Tour de France and is now recovering from surgery, so he will not be able to compete at the Games. For anyone who hasn’t experienced the superfast speeds of 4G there is a live demo in Manx Telecom’s Strand Street store which shows a real-time comparison with 3G. For more information on what customers need to do to get 4G go to www. manxtelecom.com/4g which includes a simple step-by-step guide to checking handsets and SIM cards.

This month’s Gadgets section is going to be a little different to the usual, but don’t fear, I will still be providing stellar reporting on the finest, edgiest and most exclusive pieces of technology that a simple a Google search can offer. However, whereas this page would usually give you a basic list of incomprehensibly cool gadgets from countries and companies that nobody can even spell, this month I’m putting the power in your hands. That’s right, in the spirit of this issue I’m only going to give ideas on ways you can build your own amazing gadgets using objects you can find around the house (and in B&Q). Borrowing from the minds of some of the internet’s geekiest, and yet inventive, builders, I will provide inspiration to make such creations as the VHS Toaster, the Cup Speaker and the Water-Powered Flashlight. Admittedly, a distinct lack of original ideas on the subject and an incomplete knowledge of how almost anything remotely scientific
works means that some of the things in this list may be extremely difficult, or even impossible, to build, however my job as always here at Gadgets is simply to inspire, and so I hope that, with the instructions provided by internet bloggers like Hoziko Takahashi from the University of Texas, some of these apparently “easy” designs may indeed be within the realms of possibility. And if not? Well, how badly can an attempt go?
BUILD YOUR OWN CUP SPEAKER
WATER-POWERED TORCH
Any meeting of friends can easily turn into a loud, rowdy, drunken mess in the blink of an eye, but this public disturbance simply can’t happen without the help of a blasting speaker. We’ve all found ourselves in the nightmare situation of having to ruin our favourite songs by listening to them through small phone speakers, but now those days are over with the help of a Stryrofoam/paper cup, a 3.5mm headphone jack, some copper wire, a D battery, sticky tape and some alligator clips, all easily found around the house I’m sure. The online instructable (which I will provide a link to) goes on to give detailed instructions of how to form this intricate design that are easy to follow for anyone with the most basic knowledge of university-level electronics, and in no time at all your group of pocket-protector clad friends can be rocking out to their eclectic mix of Barenaked Ladies and Talking Heads. Admittedly, this isn’t exactly your everyday gadget. It does require some prior planning (unless you’re the kind of family that keeps spare alligator clips around the place), and a basic understanding of how to build circuits and small electronics. However, although it is rather underwhelming to look at, once built this creation is surprisingly effective, and will provide a great sound from any iPod or MP3 player. The link to the instructable to build your own speaker is: http://www.instructables.com/id/Build-your-ownspeaker-from-scratch/step2/Preparing-the-pieces

Water and electricity. Not two things that traditionally mix very well. In fact, we are taught from an early age to keep them as far apart as possible (with the exception of hydroelectricity, which is actually quite important). However, nowadays it appears anything is possible with the creation of the water-powered battery. According to the “How It Works” section of the website, “This is a type of battery called the "Galvanic Cell", having 2 different types of metals and is connected by a salt bridge. It works like your typical battery but uses water as its electrolyte.” I don’t understand a word of that, and I don’t plan to look into it, but I’m putting it purely down to witchcraft. All I know is that I don’t really see any point in this creation. Of course, it’s impressive that somebody has manufactured this thing, using a source of power that is easier undeniably abundant, especially in rainy areas, however batteries, as long as you have enough of them, are also relatively reliable. For me, this lies somewhere between the VHS Toaster and the Solar Plane; It is challenging electronically and shouldn’t be built by anyone with a beginner’s knowledge of electronics, and yet I still don’t really see the point when portable torches can be bought for next to no money. By all means, try and build one of these, I’ll even be impressed if it works, however I myself will be sticking to the more reliable, and much cheaper, alternative. If the feeling grabs you and you fancy challenging yourself, the instructions for building one of these can be found here: http://www.instructables.com/id/WaterPowered-Flashlight ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

VHS TOASTER
In a world of portable head massagers and potato grilling racks, we see pointless gadgets coming out every day. However, it’s a different story when people start making their own out of secondhand objects. Enter, the VHS Toaster. Why in God’s name people find it necessary to dismantle both a perfectly working toaster (which it has to be, this doesn’t work if it’s broken) and a VHS player I have no idea, creative madness perhaps? Whatever the reason, these things exist, and there are even instructions online telling us how to make them ourselves. It isn’t actually as easy as it sounds, despite the fact all you need is a can, a toaster, a VHS player and some glue. I won’t go into details on how to actually make this thing, as I don’t really see the point in it at all, however what you should know is that, like the other things in this month’s list, it does actually require some knowledge of electronics. It will forever baffle me that: 1) people still have VHS players around the house in the youtube era, where everything you ever owned on VHS is online and 2) that people have the time on their hands to make this kind of thing. The VHS toaster is not quite the scientific revolution of the home-made solar plane, however who are we to argue with the boffins online that think that producing toast from the mouth of a VHS player is a worthwhile way to spend the time that could undoubtedly be used to create something useful? The instructable to create this very do-able machine is found here: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-tomake-a-VHS-video-toaster/, although if you’re really interested in making your own electronics, I implore you to try something more useful.
SURE LAUNCHES UPP™ FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGY FROM INTELLIGENT ENERGY We have all experienced the frustration of a dead or dying phone so Sure are really looking forward to introducing thier customers to Upp, which is an amazing alternative power source for when you need instant energy, anytime, anywhere off-grid to charge your mobile device.
SOLAR-POWERED PLANE
This month’s Gallery is one for creation and invention, so why not be a little bit imaginative with what we can do? Everybody dreams of owning their own plane at some point, and whilst admittedly those dreams usually involve the person actually being able to fly in the plane, it’s rare that anybody has the chance to build one, let alone own it. Be under no false pretenses, this is not an easy project to undertake, despite the fact the plane that this is based on was built by high school students in Texas. It requires numerous expensive materials, more spare time than is realistically available to anybody and an immense thirst for scientific knowledge that no ordinary person can muster. First of all, you’ll need enough solar panels to power a small principality, and they are neither cheap nor easy to come by, even in a world that is claiming to be increasingly “green”. Next, you’ll need to quickly and easily learn some basic mechanical engineering, because in the words of the students that created this plane, “it gets a little bit complicated”. Finally, you’ll need massive amounts of sunshine to power your new private jet that looks as if it requires more electricity than the mains supply can provide to fly (Disclaimer: don’t expect a jet. In fact don’t expect anything, this thing is impossible to build). As outlined earlier, this plane is probably just a pipe dream unless you’re willing to fork out thousands of pounds and 4 years of your life on a physics degree, but, in the words of Tom Hardy, “don’t be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling”. The instructable for this plane can be found here: http:// www.instructables.com/id/Introduction-47/?ALLSTEPS, but you are a braver person than I if you even bother reading past the first page. The top 10 biggest names to have PLAYED THE ISLE OF MAN As we hit the midway point of festival season, here at RL360° our thoughts have turned to some of the music acts who have performed on Manx soil.

THE KINKS (The Lido, 11 August, 1966)/ Ray Davies (Villa Marina, 7 June, 2005) Featuring the talents of brothers Ray and Dave Davies, The Kinks are for many the quintessential British band and their influence has spanned several decades. Known for such classics as All Day and All of the Night, Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset and Lola, it was a reflection of their enduring popularity that Ray Davies packed out the Villa Marina some 40 years after he had first performed on the Island.

ELTON JOHN (Noble’s Park, 16 June, 2011) Known these days for his superb shows in Las Vegas, Elton does continue to tour worldwide and Manx fans had a very special solo performance from the legendary singer songwriter. Noble’s Park area may be associated with the TT and many other sporting events, but for one night in June Elton-mania took over.
