We’re underway folks! The after effects of a chocolate-donned Easter are behind us. Long days, glorious warm evenings, and of course, both that sublime BBQ craze and fashion takes its first few victims. It’s time to take to the beach, create fluke moments, be spontaneous, party, make seriously impressive à la mode wardrobe purchases #thelighterthebetter, and enjoy the harmony of smiling faces from passers-by who’ve had that fill of vitamin D. We’re taking no bushwa (Google it) in this edition… Grab a glass of giggle water; have a touch of fun! If you’re not that type, don’t continue reading, this is a ‘have your cake and eat it’-type mag. Okaaaay… So, a very chic Prosecco is on the menu with a few BBQ delights in the appetite section – it couldn’t get more hotsy-totsy. We have a little chat with the Yarnbombers about their ‘all the rage’ wool fixation, congratulate a young man on his ballet success ladder, consider the friend mode, check out the top 10 World Cup moments, get a little more serious about up-tothe-minute motoring news, and figure out just how important a Breton stripe is in Fashion & Beauty… Oh – it IS important. Though it’s a complete minefield, we try our best to be on trend every month at Gallery; this month we have a little more than our usual, as it’s dedicated to fashion itself, but at the end of the day, you make your own ‘mode’ – and it really is the perfect you. Keep reading if you fancy eating that cake… serve it with ice cream.

EMBRACE THE FLAME

MY JOB IS… designer. This has included graphic design, teaching, International stamp design, and more recently designing and making stained glass windows. I enjoy finding artistic solutions to a given task. THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD WOULD BE… the one I have. I am lucky to be asked to design and illustrate the Freedom Scrolls for Douglas, Official Illustrated and calligraphy Illuminations for Government and Tynwald. I take on philatelic, watercolour and ceramic commissions and every day is a new challenge and opportunity. Who could ask for a better job, and as I am now freelance, there is no ‘office politics’ involved.

MODE

MY WORST HABIT IS… not knowing when to say no; so life can be pretty jam- packed.

HOW TO: 1) In a large bowl, mix all the burger ingredients together except the oil. Using slightly damp hands shape the mixture into four 10cm/4inch burgers. Cover and chill for 20 minutes.

IF I COULD CHANGE ANYTHING IN MY LIFE IT WOULD BE… very little different. I would perhaps wave a magic wand to bring my far-flung family in New Zealand, Spain and London a little closer.

2) Meanwhile prepare the tarragon mayonnaise; in a small bowl mix all the ingredients together and set aside.

IF I HAD TO ONLY EAT ONE KIND OF FOOD FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE IT WOULD BE… fresh fish, fruit and vegetables; as this change in my diet in the last year has brought about a huge improvement in what was crippling arthritis and which affected my work output and well-being.

I

’m not talking about that weird and wonderful facebook list of “friends”. God knows, any random eejit can join that party, invited or not. Where else would you find pictures of your mum’s loft conversion next to your needy work colleague’s sexy selfies? Not that I even have a facebook account! The pressure to be achingly cool, funny, rich and interesting on a daily basis is too much for me, all that effort and sharing in reward for a blithesome “thumbs up” sounds exhausting, plus, there’s nowhere to hide! How can I avoid my friend’s come dine with me (yes really!) party, if I’ve just checked in at Nando’s? Anyway, back to the list, this is supposed to be about friends, not FB! Whether you’re Fearne and Holly or more Madonna and Ga Ga, friendships can be a tricky business. My seven year old daughter is now on her third BFF and has already realised the cacophonous complexities of the female alliance.

However, when I am not concocting ways to avoid them, my eclectic anthology of friends all keep me sane, highly amuse me or drive me mad in different ways.

Which one are you? WORK FRIEND: Work friend knows nothing of your previous life, you actually have very little in common and yet she becomes your most trusted confidante, she knows the minutiae of your life like no other! She is privy to the truth regarding your in-(your face) laws, your unreliable ovulation pattern and your division of labour within the home. OLD FASHIONED FRIEND: If she said she was going to call round on Thursday at 8pm, get her hair done on Saturday at 2pm or pick up your daughter, she really meant it. There’s no need for check-up texting or cancellation policy warnings with this one. She doesn’t like FB and makes you feel ashamed of your social smoking habit.

btw) to how much your tooth fairy gives! She is a professional mother, she rarely laughs, is never seen without make up and yet you stay together for the sake of the children, forever bound by brownies, play dates and pomposity. INTENSE FRIEND: You met as underdogs, both cogs of a detestable wheel in a bad office. Her commitment to her causes (boss bashing/motherhood) is stronger than any work ethic she ever had. Intense mummy is the daughter that Gina Ford never had, a dedicated convert, obsessed with the art of weaning and potty training. Intense mummy can simultaneously serve beetroot risotto, express breast milk and firm her pelvic floor whilst teaching baby sign language (in French).

FLAKEY FRIEND: Flaky friend lives by her own rules in a land of vague. She rarely texts you back and you know she will change the arrangements several times before you actually meet. Flaky friend also asks for your address every Christmas, invariably forgets your birthday and generally suits herself. Flaky mum inexplicably forgets that school starts and ends at the same time every day, always looks like she has overslept and yet; you still kind of envy her angst free blithesome approach to life.

MY ECLECTIC ANTHOLOGY OF FRIENDS KEEP ME SANE!

THE BEST ADVICE I’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS… from my mother, not a particularly religious woman, who felt that every day was a gift from God and you should use it wisely and not waste it.

THE 3 MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN MY LIFE ARE… health, my family and trying to see the other person’s point of view with all the patience I can muster. MY DREAM HOUSE IS… probably the home I already share with David and our cats, but maybe lifted, along with some of our lovely neighbours to a larger plot of land in the countryside. WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR 2014? I have already enjoyed sharing an exhibition; “Creativity” with Catherine James at the Isle Gallery Tynwald Mills this year, and now I must concentrate on my second stained glass window for Arbory Church - which will keep me busy for a large part of the year, but will hopefully will still allow space to work in the garden, design some stamps, paint pictures and make pots. Here are some recipes for you to try at your BBQ this summer...

HOW TO:

INGREDIENTS • 900g-1.3kg lean boneless lamb breast (unrolled) • For the Caribbean Marinade: • 2 small onions, peeled and quartered • 2 scotch bonnet peppers, deseeded and halved • 4 garlic cloves, peeled • 2tsp ground allspice • 1x20g pack fresh thyme leaves • 100ml dark soy sauce • 50ml dark rum • 1tsp salt • 3tbsp brown sugar

1) To prepare the marinade; put all the ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

TIP

2) Place the lamb breast on a chopping board and make several slashes on each side with a sharp knife. Transfer to a shallow dish. Using rubber or disposable gloves, rub the marinade over the lamb on both sides. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator overnight. 3) Preheat the oven to Gas mark 2/150C. Remove the lamb from the marinade and transfer to a roasting rack in a foil-lined roasting tin. Cover with foil and roast slowly for 1 hour 40 minutes, or until the lamb is tender. 4) Finish off the lamb on a prepared barbecue or under a preheated moderate grill for 10 minutes, turning once. Slice the lamb into strips and serve with prepared roasted vegetables.

:: Finally, to test the cooking temperature, throw a bit of water on the grill bars. It should take three seconds to evaporate, any less and you will burn the meat; any more and you will boil it.

IF I COULD HAVE ONE QUESTION ANSWERED IN THE WORLD IT WOULD BE… frankly I wouldn’t know where to start. It bothers me that people and communities can be so cruel to each other, but it sounds like a beauty pageant answer to wish for “World Peace”, so we each need to do our bit as best we can.

BFF’S: Does what it says on the tin! They really know and understand you and yet still like you at the end of it. You can see them every day or once a year but will never ever run out of things to say. You are lucky if you have more than one of these precious jewels!

SIZZLING FACTS :: A barbie may have changed history. William, Duke of Normandy, is shown enjoying a barbecue on the famous Bayeux Tapestry before setting off, suitably fortified, for his successful invasion in 1066.

THE BEST TIME OF YEAR IS… spring when all the renewal of life seen in the landscape and gardens lifts the spirits and fills me with hope and energy. My garden is therapy if I need any and a great way to think through my work. Autumn is very beautiful, but a bit melancholy and short.

COMPETITIVE FRIEND: She wants to know everything, from where you buy your crisps (hers are organic roasted root vegetable

Whether it’s parties in the garden with family and friends, afternoon tea or festival feasts, there’s something irresistible about eating in the great outdoors.

IF I COULD BE A CELEBRITY FOR A DAY, IT WOULD BE… purgatory. I prefer to beaver away quietly in the background.

HIGH MAINTENANCE FRIEND: Often found in the workplace, you consider her as more of a colleague than a friend but she sucks you dry, spits out your saturated soul and leaves you craving her Prozac after a week of her high maintenance dramatic antics. She thrives on undivided attention, often cries on a regular basis, deeply regrets the one who got away and has a psychic line on speed dial. You want to help but you need to know when to step away from the vortex!

3) Brush each burger with a little oil and cook under a preheated, moderate grill or on a prepared barbecue for 6-8 minutes on both sides until cooked or until any meat juices run clear.

STAND BY YOUR BACK DOORS - THE NATION’S PREPARING TO ABANDON PERFECTLY ADEQUATE KITCHENS AND LAUNCH ITSELF INTO THE GREAT OUTDOORS FOR THE BARBECUE SEASON.

THIS IS A BIT MORE ABOUT MYSELF… I was born in Guernsey and started moving around the world, as my father was in the forces. I continued to do this when I married my Manx Royal Engineer husband, David. The Isle of Man became my adopted Island – the first time I have been anywhere for any length of time and I can’t now imagine living anywhere else. I spent 15 happy years as designer for the Isle of Man Post Office and taught evening classes at the college. I am intensely proud of my clever and beautiful daughters who were educated here and across to become a lawyer and an architect; achieving great things in their chosen careers, and thankfully Helen and husband Oliver have made their home here - which means my husband and I can enjoy sharing the lives of our grandchildren.

SCHOOL FRIEND SANS KIDS: You had the best time at school, share a bank of amazing and sometimes cringe-worthy memories but she still wants to do it all and you can’t! Friend sans kids (FSK) goes out when she wants, spends ages getting ready and never has to enforce a Cinderella curfew on herself to avoid a heinous hangover. This same FSK can book a last minute trip to the sun in September, read books willy nilly and sleep until noon. You would never swap lives but sometimes you wish you could afford a nanny and a girl’s week in Barcelona. Not too much to ask, is it?

COUNTRY STYLE PORK WITH SOUTHERN BBQ SAUCE (Serves 8)

INGREDIENTS • For the rub: • 4tbsp light brown sugar • 2tbsp paprika • 1tbsp garlic granules • 1tbsp chilli powder • 1tbsp onion granules • 2tsp sea salt • 2tsp freshly ground black pepper

• • • • • • • • • •

1tsp oregano 1.8 kg (4lbs) pork shoulder For the barbecue sauce: 225g (8oz) jar tomato sauce 5tbsp black treacle 4tbsp vinegar 1tsp garlic granules 1tsp chilli powder 1/2tsp freshly ground black pepper 2tsp sea salt

HOW TO: 1) Mix the brown sugar and all the dry spices to make the rub. Cut the pork into 5cm (2in) chunks and rub each chunk with the rub on both sides. Set aside to rest. 2) Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine the tomato sauce, treacle, vinegar, garlic granules, chilli powder, pepper and salt. Simmer over a medium heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3) Preheat the barbecue to medium-hot. Grill the pork for about 20 to 30 minutes or until done, turning as needed to avoid flare-ups and burning. Glaze with the barbecue sauce, and continue to cook until sticky.

TIP

:: Preparation is key. Don’t be tempted to start cooking too soon, it’s a sure-fire way to end in disaster. Make sure your BBQ is glowing red and the charcoal has a layer of white ash before you start, otherwise your food could end up burnt on the outside but raw in the middle.

STYLING IT OUT A THIRD OF THE UK POPULATION CAN’T RECALL THE LAST TIME THEY RECEIVED A COMPLIMENT ON THEIR STYLE. A further 65% admit to not feeling confident in their outfit choices, according to a TK Maxx Style Census.

JOIN THE ART MOVEMENT THIS SUMMER FOR A NEW TAKE ON PRINTS. NO DESIGN CLASSES OR PAINT BRUSHES NECESSARY - THE HIGH STREET HAS COME UP WITH ITS OWN WEARABLE WORKS OF ART.

As well as lacking in style confidence, half of those surveyed confess to wearing the same items for the past year, indicating that, as a nation, we’re too scared to break out of a style rut.

Usually known for its minimalism, design house Celine displayed a more-is-more approach, splashing the catwalk with bold colour and brush stroke prints. The arty touch was also adopted at Chanel, Prada and Versace, setting the style canvas for summer 14. Time to brush up on your print experimentation? Rummage through the high street gallery for a makeshift masterpiece. It’s never been easier to wear your art on your sleeve.

Dr Carolyn Mair, cognitive psychologist at The London College of Fashion says: “ Being happy about the way you look can boost your confidence. Make the time to experiment with your own style, try on new things and celebrate the looks that reflect your individuality.” THE STUDY ALSO REVEALED THAT BRITS FEEL THEIR MOST STYLISH AT THE AGE OF 29.

In the years between BMW’s purchase of the Rover Group from BAE and its eventual demise, re-re-re-naming and sale to some Chinese people for a tenner once the parts of the company that weren’t as rotten as the majority of BLMC body panels manufactured in the 1970s had been expertly extracted and capitalised on, British fashion designer Paul Smith dripped his multicoloured mark on the outgoing Mini Sprite in an attempt to celebrate all things British, and I like it. They even sold a limited edition of them in a more subtle shade of ‘Paul Smith Blue’ rather than outfitted in his trademark coloured stripes as seen here. Scot girls are, on average, a 34DD - two cup sizes bigger than their 34C English neighbours. Welsh women have the smallest average cup size at 34B, while Irish ladies measured in at 34C. The news follows research by the department store which shows that 63% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. Just 21% of women have been professionally fitted in the past two years, and 37% of women admit they’ve never had a bra fitting.

Take, for example, Jared Leto. As if being a successful actor wasn’t quite enough, he decided to form the band 30 Seconds To Mars, managing to scoop 67 awards to date. I know what you’re thinking; Home and Away was pretty good back in the day and you’ve got a soft spot for a bit of Kylie and Jason, but that’s exactly the point - it might prove hard to come to terms with, but there are people out there who’d disagree with you.

HERMÈS VEYRON You may enjoy indulging in a few minutes of Too Many Broken Hearts on that cassette that you haven’t been able to part with since the tail end of the eighties but there’s no denying that a vehicle that purportedly made a per unit loss of over £3,700,000 in order to take home a whole raft of records and awards to Wolfsburg, a vehicle with just shy of 1,200 horsepower and 16 cylinders looming ominously behind the seats isn’t the epitome of excess. It’s the Top Trumps card that every kid would want to be holding if kids still played with Top Trumps, an excess to end all excesses. Except, it isn’t. Teaming up with Hermès, they’ve managed to take it one step further yet thankfully not one step too far. Obligatory matching luggage complements the repeated Hermès ‘H’ pattern in the grille, the stitched leather and satin chrome interior door pulls and chocolate meets cafe-créme paintwork. Drat, I’m out of beluga caviar. Fancy a quick trip to the Volga to fetch some more?

IT’S THE TOP TRUMPS CARD THAT EVERY KID WOULD WANT TO BE HOLDING IF KIDS STILL PLAYED WITH TOP TRUMPS, AN EXCESS TO END ALL EXCESSES. EXCEPT, IT ISN’T.

AND FINALLY... Okay, I’ll admit it. Those horrible things I said about Jeremy Scott’s Smart forTwo? I meant them, it looks absurd. However, the borderline impossible-to-keep-clean-without-a-fulltime-personal-valet (presumably travelling close behind in a matching Pokemon inspired automotive abomination, or at the very least another Smart with those ridiculous adhesive eyelashes perched above the headlights - we’ve all seen them) white leather seats are quilted, which is almost the yin to the Hermes inspired (that’s the Greek messenger to the gods with be-winged feet rather than the luxury Swiss leatherwear brand of Veyron tweaking fame) adornment’s yang. After all, you may be basking in the luxuriously crisp interior of your petrol powered roller-boot, but you’ll still look like an idiot to everyone looking in.

Friend Mode Words by Clare Bowie Illustrations by Adam Berry

I

’m not talking about that weird and wonderful Facebook list of ‘friends’. God knows, any random eejit can join that party, invited or not. Where else would you find pictures of your mum’s loft conversion next to your needy work colleague’s sexy selfies? Not that I even have a Facebook account! The pressure to be achingly cool, funny, rich and interesting on a daily basis is too much for me, all that effort and sharing in reward for a blithesome ‘thumbs up’ sounds exhausting, plus, there’s nowhere to hide! My seven-year old daughter is now on her third BFF, and has already realised the cacophonous complexities of the female alliance.

She is a professional mother, she rarely laughs, is never seen without make-up and yet you stay together for the sake of the children, forever bound by brownies, play dates and pomposity.

COMPETITIVE FRIEND: She wants to know everything, from where you buy your crisps (hers are organic roasted root vegetable

The List...Who makes the cut?

FLAKEY FRIEND: Flaky friend lives by her own rules in a land of vague. She rarely texts you back and you know she will change the arrangements several times before you actually meet. Flaky friend also asks for your address every Christmas, invariably forgets your birthday and generally suits herself. Flaky mum inexplicably forgets that school starts and ends at the same time every day, always looks like she has overslept and yet; you still kind of envy her angst free blithesome approach to life.

MY ECLECTIC ANTHOLOGY OF FRIENDS KEEP ME SANE!

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

SCHOOL FRIEND SANS KIDS: You had the best time at school, share a bank of amazing and sometimes cringe-worthy memories, but she still wants to do it all and you can’t! Friend sans kids (FSK) goes out when she wants, spends ages getting ready and never has to enforce a Cinderella curfew on herself to avoid a heinous hangover. This same FSK can book a last-minute trip to the sun in September, read books willy nilly and sleep until noon. You would never swap lives but sometimes you wish you could afford a nanny and a girl’s week in Barcelona. Not too much to ask, is it? HIGH-MAINTENANCE FRIEND: Often found in the workplace, you consider her as more of a colleague than a friend, but she sucks you dry, spits out your saturated soul and leaves you craving her Prozac after a week of her high-maintenance dramatic antics. She thrives on undivided attention, often cries on a regular basis, deeply regrets the one who got away and has a psychic line on speed dial. You want to help but you need to know when to step away from the vortex! BFFs: Does what it says on the tin! They really know and understand you, and yet still like you at the end of it. You can see them every day or once a year but will never ever run out of things to say. You are lucky if you have more than one of these precious jewels!

//VILLA MARINA// A legend is coming to rock ‘The Rock’ this summer for two nights. Modfather, Paul Weller is to play the Villa on Monday 30th June and Tuesday 1st July in a double whammy of sets from Paul Weller and his former bands The Jam and The Style Council. Paul Weller’s band includes recent Isle of Man favourites Ocean Colour Scene’s guitarist, Steve Craddock and is set to be a celebration of hits from five decades. The Jam’s debut, ‘In the City’, set the musical and lyrical manifesto for The Jam. Just 19 years of age on release, Weller, the son of a taxi driver and part-time window cleaner, revealed song-writing skills way beyond his years, hitting the UK Top 40 in May 1977. The hits kept rolling with songs like ‘A town called Malice’, ‘The Eton Rifles’, ‘Just Who is the 5 O’Clock Hero?’, ‘Going Underground’. Their final single, ‘Beat surrender’ went straight to number one in its first week becoming the band’s fourth chart topper and hailed their farewell concert tour which included multiple sell-outs at Wembley Arena in 1982. How often are accounting standards reviewed and is there a difference in how they are applied in the Isle of Man?

Accounting standards can be broadly split into two categories: International Financial Reporting Standards (“IFRS”) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”). Companies have the option to apply either IFRS or local GAAP. There are a number of different bodies that set accounting standards. The International Accounting Standards Board (“IASB”) is responsible for setting IFRS and each country has its own accounting standards board, responsible for setting local GAAP, in the UK this is the Financial Reporting Council (“FRC”). When the IASB sets a new accounting standard most countries will adopt or interpret that new standard and incorporate it into their own accounting standards, or local GAAP. Accounting standards are continually being reviewed and updated both at an international and local level, to react to emerging accounting issues and changing business practices to ensure financial reporting accurately reflects the substance of business transactions. UK GAAP is based not just on accounting standards but also UK company law and as such when applied here on the Isle of Man we make adjustments to ensure compliance with Isle of Man company law. UK and Irish GAAP is currently undergoing significant reform to align more with IFRS. The new standards replace almost 3000 pages of current UK and Irish GAAP with just over 300 pages and become effective from 1 January 2015. Although this seems a long way off companies already need to consider where they fit in the new reporting regime; comparative figures will need to be calculated but more importantly the impact will be much wider than just accounting changes, e.g. it also affects tax, distributable reserves, KPIs and systems and controls.

AFFAIRS BOSTON GROUP

Is the TT helpful in attracting businesses to set up on the Isle of Man?

No. In my opinion no business, unless directly connected to the TT, will actually relocate or set up their operation on the Island because of it. That said, many people on the Island do miss the value of the TT to the wider business community. I have travelled all over the world on business, from the USA to the Middle East to Asia, and it is fair to say that selling the Island is not always the easiest part of the job. Some think that we are part of the Channel Islands, others are not even that close. However, those people that have heard of us have also invariably heard of the TT. In fact most will start by saying, “I have heard of the Isle of Man; don’t you guys have a bike race where they travel at 200mph? Those guys must be crazy.” Finding unique selling points for the Island and our industries is a difficult task in the modern world. As such, having such internationally recognised events with global coverage certainly makes us memorable and attractive. I have a number of clients who have asked to see the TT for themselves and none go home disappointed. So to revisit my first line, no the TT will not help attract businesses to set up on the Island, but I do believe that it provides us all with a wonderful story which makes us memorable and gives a great opportunity to invite clients to our jurisdiction.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

COUNTING HOUSE

Do you think government has a sound strategy for attracting businesses to the Isle of Man?

(Continued from May issue) There is no doubt that the greatest USP of the Island is tax, coupled with the business-savvy approach of our tax departments. Yet for some reason we are reluctant to market it. Muted whispers of “we don’t want to upset the UK” are always given as the reason. Really? Do we believe that the UK doesn’t know about our tax advantages? They are gunning for them pretty effectively. Government seems not to understand elasticity of demand. A majority seems to hold a view that if you put a tax up you will collect more money. Not so! If you put a tax up, there is a serious risk that fewer people will pay it; some will leave, and some will give up or hide their taxable earnings. I applaud the effort to join up and modernise government. Whether this will be successful depends on the quality of those chosen to execute. They need to examine critically the role of the FSC, which many feel to be an obstacle to business growth. They need to curb the zeal of the planners, some of whom seem to feel it’s their duty to stop wealthy people from investing in their houses. They need to inject some realism into the property market and fathom a way to get Estate Agents and owners to work together to sell, instead of optimistically holding out and quenching opportunities for growth. And they need to form a clear policy on whether government runs critical businesses (I venture that they should not). The future lies with the 20-somethings who are generating bright ideas, but we have no facilities for them and our out-dated economic policies are a serious disincentive to joining us.

UTOPIA

How do businesses deal with crises such as the recent flooding the Island has experienced?

Being one of the Island’s premier Hair & Beauty salons Utopia has over the last 35 years experienced its fair share of disruptions, none more devastating than the floods in February this year. Preparing for the storms certainly created a challenge for our reception staff, but the most important factor was communication. We needed to make sure that all of our clients knew about promenade closures and expected tidal highs. We also needed to be organised to ensure that movement of staff and clients to our other salon in Walpole Avenue could be managed effectively. When the major flooding happened on Saturday we had already contacted over 150 clients, some naturally cancelled, some wanted to still come in, some we moved to our other salon. When the main wave hit the salon frontage and blew one of our doors in our girls responded magnificently: all the sea water, seaweed and drift wood was quickly brushed and mopped. We carried on working like the band on the titanic! When the last client left that day it was still a bit of a mess, but by 9.00am Sunday morning - having cleaned most of the night - the salon was ready for action except for the decorative damage. Most large businesses will have an emergency recovery plan in place, but all outlets need to be ready for ever changing climatic influences. You have to be ready, otherwise it can seriously destroy what you have built. We have learnt that we need to keep our working stock at a higher level due to boats being cancelled, never to rely on computers, and to appreciate electricity.

CORPORATE GOLF EVENT RAISES £6,900

BUSINESSMAN TAKES GREAT STRIDES TO HELP CHARITY

Jonathan Hall, Director of Obbligato Consulting Ltd., walked more than 100 miles in March to support the work of two well-known local charities - Southern Befrienders and The Children’s Centre. The walk, which was from Chipping Campden to Bath along the iconic Cotswold Way, represent the fulfilment of a long-held ambition to complete the route. He has been involved with Southern Befrienders as a director for three years, and chairman for the past year, and he has been a trustee of The Children’s Centre for nine years. Jonathan said: “I wanted to make the walk into something more than a personal physical challenge, and so decided to seek sponsorship for two charities that are close to my heart. I have been amazed at the generosity of my family and friends, enabling me to raise £1,563.16 for the charities.” He presented the cheque to Juana Warburton, Development Manager at The Children’s Centre, and Lorna Trevethan, Scheme Manager at Southern Befrienders. Both thanked him for his magnificent fundraising efforts, and those who had sponsored him.

A corporate golf event has raised £6,900 for Cruse Bereavement Care Isle of Man. Held at Peel Golf Club and sponsored, for the third year in succession, by Celton Manx, the event attracted 18 teams drawn principally from the Island’s business sector, with Adorn Domiciliary Care emerging overall winners with a score of 51.4. His Excellency Lieutenant Governor Adam Wood was among the guests, who heard the charity’s deputy chairman Mike Henthorn extend his thanks to all those who supported the event, in particular sponsors Celton Manx. “The golf day has grown year on year in stature and the money raised truly makes a fantastic difference” he said. Mr Karran praised the tireless work of his predecessor and how the growth of the charity was leading to the need to recruit more volunteers who could provide confidential bereavement support. “This type of event is extremely helpful to our cause”, he added. Ahead of presenting the prizes Celton Manx executive director Bill Mummery said Cruse Bereavement Care was “a brilliant charity to support” and that as government was looking to devolve more services to communities and local authorities, the Island’s third sector would have an increasingly important role to play. www.cruseisleofman.org

CHARITY APPEAL RAISES MORE THAN £14,000

The 2013-2014 Mayor’s charity appeal has raised more than £14,000. The Ex-Mayor of Douglas Councillor Carol Malarkey revealed the total raised at a reception in Douglas Town Hall when she presented each of her four chosen charities with a cheque for £3,500. Presenting the cheques the Mayor said that with the support of the previous Mayoress, Councillor Sara Hackman and the charity committee the ‘fun’ had been put back into ‘fundraising’ and she extended her thanks to her fellow councillors and all those who had sponsored prizes over the year. The four charities, sharing the £14,000, are Junior Achievement Isle of Man, Manx Workshop for the Disabled, Tabitha’s Trust and Victim Support.

ABBEY DENTAL CONTINUES TO FLOURISH AS A SMALL FAMILY CENTRED BUSINESS, WITH GREAT CONTINUED SUPPORT FROM STAFF AND PATIENTS ALIKE.

Maintaining high levels of skills and expertise is paramount to providing the best dental care available. SO FAR IN 2014...

Something else to smile about...

Straighter teeth at any age.

All the staff have completed first aid and periodontal training within the practice; Tim Brown is travelling to London every month for an advanced restorative dental course, and Mark Hepworth is continuing to advance his implantology skills in Liverpool. Abbey Dental is also celebrating Kesha Sayle’s qualification as dental nurse; following in-house and external training and rigorous examinations in the UK.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014 This year has seen the addition of three new Abbey Dental team members. Antipodean administrator Vicki Mitchell has called the Island her home for the past 11 years, and is already a valued member of the team. Patients love her fresh, straightforward approach, and staff have had to watch waistlines with her marvellous love of baking! Laxey girl Kesha Collister has decided to re-train as a dental nurse, having worked as an administrator at Charterhouse Group in Ramsey since leaving college in 2009. Kesha is already making great progress in her nursing training and is due to start formal training for the dental nursing diploma later this year. Abbey Dental is also pleased to introduce Dr Darren Stone BDS, who joined the practice in March to take over orthodontic care from Dr Birgit Jensen. Following six successful years at Abbey Dental, and a lifetime of orthodontic success, Birgit has decided to retire, though she will continue to consult on some orthodontic cases. Darren is a Platinum Elite Invisalign Provider who brings a wealth of experience in both fixed and removable orthodontics. Having straightened hundreds of smiles across the North West of England, he also

trains dentists throughout the British Isles. Darren is now welcoming new patients of all ages to provide straighter smiles across the Isle of Man. Abbey Dental continues to welcome new patients, the majority of them arrive into their care through personal recommendation. Abbey Dental recently received the WhatClinic.com Award for Customer Service (2014), and their wonderfully supportive patients have once again endorsed the practice through the Islands Best Business Guide.

Abbey Dental, values comments written in their visitors book, using patient feedback to improve customer service and patient care. On entering the practice, new and existing patients are welcomed in a comfortable lounge setting, with fresh

JADE ARGENT Breed: Crazy rabbit lady. Age: 27 Likes: Spending time with my pets, drawing and watching live music! Dislikes: Emptying litter trays, People who breed animals for profit and... broccoli. If animal what would you be? I’d be a koala; relaxing in the trees in the sunshine. I can’t imagine an easier life (except maybe Toffee’s).

22

What do you do for a living? I’ve actually just started my own pet portrait business, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I’ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to give it a go. Do you have any more pets? Yes! I have seven other rabbits, five degus and a leopard gecko called Jenny! We are always joking I should charge admission to my house as a petting zoo! Would you have any more pets? Not at the moment, I think I’ve got just about enough!

The best and worst thing about having a pet is..? The best thing is definitely the companionship. There’s nothing like seeing their excitement when you give them a new toy or when they come running to greet you first thing in the morning. It’s just so rewarding when you know they are happy. The worst thing is having to leave them when you go on holiday, I spend half the holiday worrying about them and calling home!

TOFFEE

Cracker is a cracker of a cat! He’s eight years old and had a bad start in life as he was very stressed when he first came to the Sanctuary, but he’s getting better by the day and we simply can not understand why no-one has taken him home. He’s a lovely ginger boy who just wants to be loved – he loves to be stroked and could be your very own ginger nut!

Breed: Lionhead x dwarf lop rabbit. Age: 2.5 years. Likes: Italian flat leaf parsley (I’m a rabbit of refined taste!), my new rabbit friend Molly, sitting on my owners knee every evening having cuddles whilst watching Neighbours! Dislikes: The vets, anything fluffier than me, when Molly steals my food! If human what would you be? I’d fancy my chances at a career in modeling. I mean really, who could resist? I certainly enjoy posing for cameras at every opportunity. Why do you love your human? I love my human because she took me in when I had a lot of health problems and helped me back to full strength. I also love her because she spoils me, I’m talking 2 servings of veggies a day and lots of attention! If you had one wish what would you wish for? I’d wish that more people would consider adopting from Rescue centers rather than going to pet shops or breeders so that more animals like me would get a second chance (That or a giant bunch of parsley).

Eyespy: The Hair Dye Junkie

S

arah wakes up with the feeling that today’s not going to be a good day. Racking her brains as she stumbles into the bathroom, she tries to remember why. Did she hit Reply All to that gossipy email from Emma on reception? Is today that big presentation with the RL360 clients she was supposed to have prepared? Hmmm… she doesn’t think so. And then she catches sight of herself in the bathroom mirror, and she remembers why today’s such a bad day. Her roots are showing. Sarah’s a hair dye addict, a home hair colour junkie. And every four to six weeks… or three if she’s perfectly honest, she’s dyeing for a fix. Garnier Nutrisse, Clairol Nice ‘n Easy, L’Oréal Color Experte, and even Sunin- she’s tried them all, and got the Boots points to prove it. It all started with an early experiment with Wella Shaders & Toners when she was still at school. She’ll never forget the thrill of excitement as she tore open the sachet, shampooed it into her hair and then emerged from the shower, a vision in Rich

Mahogany. Not to mention the trouble she got into when she left Rich Mahogany streaks all over her mum’s best white towels. Ten years on and she’s Egyptian Plum one week and Flame Red the next – matching hair colours to suit her mood. And when Sarah can’t find exactly the colour she wants, she turns mixologist. A dash of L’Oréal Féria 58 in Bronze Shimmer added to Herbal Essences 66 in Chocolate Velvet with a bit of leftover henna turned into a ravishing red that lasted for weeks. Life was exciting as a racy redhead, but when the colour started to fade, Sarah found herself back in the hair dye aisle at Boots, gazing longingly at the model on the box of Clairol Nice & Easy’s Natural Palest Blonde. Sleek, sexy and self-assured with her blonde mane and gleaming smile, she looked like she had the perfect life to go with her perfect hair, and for £3.65, Sarah could live the dream too. She’d definitely catch the eye of Dave in Accounts if she was beach blonde, she thought to herself. And who needs test strands when you’re a hair colour expert… Forty-five minutes later, Sarah found out that ‘Nice ‘n Easy’ was anything but, as she unwrapped the

towel to find her hair was bright orange. Eye-catching definitely - but not quite in the way she’d imagined. Thankfully that was when swine flu was doing the rounds, and a couple of sneezes down the phone to her boss got her ten days off work. Plenty of time to go back to Saharan Rose, and maybe even try out Spiced Cider and Navajo Bronze as well. She just loves the way those post-colour conditioning sachets make her hair look so shiny. But while Sarah’s hair might look great, her bathroom’s another story, with its dye-spattered walls and purple-stained grout in the shower. And that’s where she’s got some sympathy with Ashley Cole. As much as she loves Cheryl’s Morello Cherry look, Sarah can only imagine the state Cheryl and Ashley’s bathroom towels were in afterwards.

TYPICAL BEHAVIOUR: Closely examining the pages of Grazia, trying to work out whether Eva Longoria’s hair is more Hot Cocoa or Spiced Rum. DISTINCTIVE MARKINGS: Permanently purple-stained cuticles from where the disposable gloves leaked. NATURAL ENEMIES: Horrified hairdressers who ban the Hair Dye Junkie and her frazzled hair from their salon. MATING CALL: “It’s double points day at Boots!”

Manx Cancer Help recently held its first event Karting Challenge, which offered budding drivers the chance to race against its patron – and double World Superbike Champion – James Toseland, former racer turned commentator Steve Parrish and local legend Conor Cummins, hosted by Grandstand Karting at the Jurby circuit. The weather turned out to be as hot as the on-track action, as the three star drivers battled it out with the other racers over three heats, semi-finals and final. The eventual winner was Kealan Beattie followed by Jason Kitchen and Garey Ellison. The fastest celebrity was James, followed by Conor and then Steve. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

The racing was followed by a Q&A. Manx Cancer Help Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Chambers, said: ‘The event was a huge success raising nearly £3,000 for the charity. The feedback was that everyone enjoyed the experience of being able to meet James, Steve and Conor in such a relaxed format and to race against them was a real thrill. We would like to thank Dean Ayres from Grandstand Karting and Celton Manx for sponsoring the event.’

His reputation and the sheer impact of his compositions have established him as the most exciting figurative artist on the contemporary scene, and his massive worldwide success shows no signs of abating. Fabian’s international status has been confirmed many times, most recently when he was awarded the prestigious trophy for being Artist of the Year 2014 by the Academy of Artists, Italy. He was named as official artist to the 2010 Latin Grammy Awards and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He has also been acknowledged in his homeland of Argentina with a rare government funded public exhibition for the nation - a huge tribute to an internationally acclaimed fine artist who has brought credit to his country. He has published many collectable canvases and three beautiful hardback books. His art is simply the passionate expression of his strong romantic feelings. Inspired by what is known in martial arts as the Muga (empty mind), Fabian Perez finds himself in this almost meditative state of mind when he is at work, and the purity of his creativity flows.

Belle, a powerful period drama with a stellar UK cast was filmed on the Isle of Man in late 2012. Inspired by a 1779 painting by Zoffany of Dido Elizabeth Belle, and her life story, Belle is the tale of a mixed – race girl raised as an aristocratic lady in England at the end of the 18th century. Against the backdrop of a controversial 18th century slavery case, Belle examines themes of morality, identity, class, gender and race and brings to life the love story of Dido Belle (Gugu Mbatha Raw) and John Davinier (Sam Reid), in a world in which one of England’s most powerful men stands between them. Belle is being released by Fox Searchlight Pictures and is coming soon to a cinema near you. Closet is a forbidden love story set in a brutal comprehensive school and unfurls around a wardrobe that appears on a desolate beach. Events threaten to turn tragic, but then something inexplicable happens. Manx actors Will Sutton, Warren Spencer and Edward Crompton star in the 11-minute film, which is produced by Debs Gwinnell and directed by Chris Gore. The film was shown at the Broadway Cinema as part of the 2013 Isle of Man Film Festival. It was also screened at the Boston LGBT film festival, which is one of the biggest gay film festivals in the world. It’s acceptance into the Seattle festival, which runs from 15th May to 8th June, is a major coup. ISLAND OF CULTURE ‘IMAGE A DAY’: 100 IMAGES AND COUNTING With more than 100 images created since he began his ‘Image a Day’ blog for Island of Culture 2014, artist Juan Moore reflects on the project’s first four months. ‘The ‘Image a Day’ blog has now been up and running since January 1st and is still going strong. Recently we hit the 100th image milestone. It’s been really interesting to me to see how far-reaching the blog is; not just people from the Island are looking at it, but it also gets views from all over the world, from the UK and the USA to Bulgaria, Malaysia, Mongolia, China and even as far away as Vanuatu (which I had to look on the map to find out where it was).” “The blog also attracts anywhere from around 100 to a high point of 400 views per day; recently the blog hit 13,000 views, which has surpassed my expectations.” “In terms of producing the artwork every day, it’s been surprisingly a lot of fun. My whole artistic career has been based around producing work for sale or for commission, so this project has really been great in that I can experiment and use mediums I wouldn’t normally use. The project began in January with paintings, because that’s what I’ve done for the past eight years, but it has moved into mixed media work and printmaking and on to digital artwork, an area I’ve been interested in for a long while but never had the time to fully explore.” “People ask me how I come up with an idea every day. Well, there is no easy answer. Sometimes an idea just pops in there; sometimes I’ll take a walk or have a bath and I can work something out in my head. Other times, I have to start drawing and arrive at an idea through experimenting or doodling; it varies from day-to-day. “I have also visited all of the island’s high schools, where I set up and produced a painting in front of all of the classes that passed through the art department on that particular day. I think it was a success and the students enjoyed it, and I must say the Island has some very talented students across all of the high schools.” “As for where the project goes next, who knows? I’d like to go and produce work at different locations, such as local businesses. I know we have WOSAT (Western Open Studios and Art Trail) coming up in Peel, where I will have a stand and be producing an ‘Image-a-Day’ artwork there; so if you’re about for that, come and say hi.’ www.imageadayiom.blogspot.com

TALES OF HEROISM SEE STUDENTS CELEBRATED

Young story-tellers who wrote about heroes were celebrated at an event today. Students aged 21 and under in full-time education were invited to pen a short story, a memoir or the opening chapter of a novel on the subject of ‘heroes’. The annual Hall Caine Prize for Creative Writing – named after the distinguished Manx novelist – attracted 1,016 entries. Winners and those whose work was highly-commended gathered at the Manx Museum to receive prizes sponsored by Gloria Rukeyser, great-granddaughter of Sir Hall Caine. Mrs Rukeyser, like her famous ancestor, is a writer and journalist. Her family still occupies the novelist’s former home, historic Greeba Castle. Presenting the prizes, Tim Crookall MHK, Minister for Education and Children, said: “Now in its fourth year, the Hall Caine Prize goes from strength-to-strength and is by far and away our most popular competition, with more than 10 per cent of the school population taking part.”

FEATURE FILM FILMED IN ISLAND A major feature film version of Spooks was filmed at various locations around the Isle of Man recently. The film stars Pompeii and Game Of Thrones star Kit Harington, and Zero Dark Thirty and Ides Of March star Jennifer Ehle, alongside Academy® Award Nominee Peter Firth, who reprises his role as ‘Harry Pearce’ from the original hit international TV series that ran for 10 seasons. Isle of Man Film’s Mike Reaney said: “The script is literally action-packed. Audiences are going to be taken on a thrillseeking joy ride by this wide-screen version of Spooks. Ollie and his team have put together an excellent project which we expect to be lighting up cinemas everywhere in 2015.”

STEP 1: ENTER CREATEURS. This annual competition, now in its second year, is a competition for creative amateurs and hobbyists - in other words, people who aren’t yet making a living doing whatever creative outlet they’re passionate about. Its goal is to showcase aspiring creatives like you, to help you learn how to apply your skills in a business setting, and to (maybe) pay you cash prizes for the privilege. Why? Because we’re as passionate about great creative work as you are. So, sign up by emailing createurs@ ashgrovemarketing.com with the categories you would like to enter. You can choose as many of the following as you want, but they have to be separate entries:

• GRAPHIC DESIGN • COPYWRITING • WEB & MULTIMEDIA • PHOTOGRAPHY Then we will get back to you with some paperwork to sign (the rules of the competition, basically) and arrange some mentoring sessions. You will get one-to-one

time with yours truly to help you plan your project and tell you what the judges will be looking for in a winner. You’ve read this far, so I’ll give you a special sneak peek into what we will talk about. The key thing will be making sure your work has a business rationale. A nice logo design is great, but why those colours or that shape? A stunning photo is great, but why that lens or filter? A thumping video is great, but what’s the call to action? I will help you pick a business, real or imaginary, and work out what they need from a marketing perspective and how your work can help meet those needs. EVERY WORK SUBMISSION NEEDS TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY A STRATEGIC RATIONALE, WHICH OUTLINES ALL THE ‘WHYS’ OF YOUR PROJECT. THIS IS WHAT WILL REALLY WIN THE COMPETITION FOR YOU, IF YOU GET IT RIGHT. DON’T LET THAT WORRY YOU, THOUGH - THEY’RE PRETTY EASY TO WRITE, SO LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THE RIGHT PROCESS WHEN YOU DEVELOP YOUR WORK.

Oh, we were doing steps weren’t we? Right, I’ll get back on track…

STEP 2: complete your entry on time (by 22 August), whilst learning great new business skills. STEP 3: get your work splashed all

over the pages of Gallery magazine and presented at our awards ceremony, for great exposure.

STEP 4: maybe win hundreds of pounds in cash prizes.

NINE-YEAR-OLD HECTOR GETS THE POINTE NEW YORK OR RICHMOND?

pool vanished as swiftly as a grand jeté.

BOLSHOI BALLET ACADEMY OR ROYAL BALLET SCHOOL SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAMME?

One year on and regular ballet classes later, Hector took part in the Dancers’ Barre production of Around the World in 80 Days and relished wearing all the different costumes, from cowboy to Turkish sultan. “As the only boy and playing the sultan Hector had his own mini-harem of 14 girls,” said Catherine.

This was the tough decision ballet student Hector Moore, aged just nine, his mother Catherine and father Tony have just had to make. But the decision’s been made and in July Hector and his mother will be leaving their home in Onchan and heading for London and the Royal Ballet School’s White Lodge in Richmond Park where the Ashley Hill pupil will attend a six-day intensive training course. Hector’s come a long way from when he was a four-year-old reception class pupil at Laxey Primary School, joining a Dancers’ Barre class run by Rachel Withington for the first time. “Hector had always been an active child, running everywhere, even breaking into the odd pony gallop in the kitchen, but I never saw any early signs that he might be interested in ballet,” said Australian-born Catherine, who holds a BA in dance, trained with the West Australian Ballet and now teaches dance part time. “He wasn’t into team sports or keen on swimming. Then he tried gymnastics but he didn’t like that either.” (“Too much queueing up,” explains Hector). In the Dancers’ Barre class Hector was the only boy and, 45 minutes later, when the class finished, he came out, turned to his mother and asked: “Can I go back next week?” and all thoughts of the gym or the

“I love the all dressing up you get to do in ballet…It’s a lot better than when you’re training and have to wear a vest and shorts and canvas pumps,” said Hector. Catherine continued: “Hector really enjoys ballet and when he doesn’t have a class to go to there’s all this energy that builds up and he’ll be doing split turns and leaps in the kitchen.” Catherine has always been realistic about Hector’s ability and admits that in the early days Hector, while enthusiastic and eager to learn, wasn’t especially gifted. “He never missed a class, though, so I thought the time had come for me to help develop his skills. I decided to give Hector some tuition myself, so now the TV is switched off and we do a half-hour body-conditioning session in our home studio most days,” she explained. The ‘studio’ is a converted shed in the unique setting of the Moores’ home. They’re currently renovating set deep in the Onchan countryside, peaceful surroundings unlikely to distract pupil and tutor from the serious work of building balance and flexibility. Hector, who’s had support from the Isle of Man Arts Council for the past two years and whose idol is the Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta whom he saw at Covent Garden, is now into his second of a three-year Royal Ballet School Junior Associate training programme in Manchester. Catherine explained: “Hector was just seven when he auditioned along with hundreds of other children for the five coveted places on the programme.” ‘I wasn’t nervous, though,” added Hector, “but now I’m there I wish I’d kept up with the gymnastics.” “We didn’t have any expectations that he’d get a place, but we thought the experience would be beneficial anyway, so we were all thrilled when he got through. At the time, Hector was under the tuition of Mari-Louise Britz at the Academy of Dance in Ballasalla. He didn’t do a particularly good audition, though, but the judges clearly saw he had potential.” Now, between being a full-time pupil at Ashley Hill School and attending the

38

Academy of Dance in Ballasalla, Hector and his mother travel to Manchester 28 times a year to the Royal Ballet School’s northern home for intensive one-day training sessions. “I like going to the school in Manchester because I’m not the only boy any more and we dance to someone playing the piano. And it’s nice to talk to other people my age about ballet,” said Hector. “Hector’s very focussed,” said Catherine. “He shone in his ballet class in Laxey, but in Manchester he’s surrounded by incredibly gifted children, so in the beginning, it was really hard for him, but he listens to his teachers and takes instruction willingly in what’s a very strict environment. As one of the children’s chaperones, I often get to watch the classes and can see what areas Hector needs to work on. Already his flexibility has quadrupled, he’s watching what he eats - and I’m watching what I cook for him - he’s playing badminton at school and he’s even developing a six-pack.” Now a devotee of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker (“He’s captivated by the Tin Soldier’s costume” says Catherine) Hector recently won the ‘Junior Class Category’ in the Royal Academy of Dance North West Scholarship Auditions, the prize for which is a week’s training session with the Northern Ballet Academy in Leeds. In July, he turns 10, and early in 2015 will be attending the international auditions to be accepted for the Royal Ballet School in Richmond, London. Catherine said: “The competition is intense, but even if Hector doesn’t get a place, it will all have been fantastic experience.” And along with the fledgling six-pack, increased flexibility, better balance and healthy eating habits, there’s been another beneficial outcome. Hector’s taken up gymnastics again voluntarily - at the Manx Gymnastics Centre of Excellence, and this time it’s serious. He’s winning gold and silver medals…and no longer minds queuing up.

IS... E M A MY N

Colleen Corlett MY JOB IS IS… designer. This has included graphic design, teaching, International stamp design, and more recently designing and making stained glass windows. I enjoy finding artistic solutions to a given task.

THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD WOULD BE… BE the one I have. MY WORST HABIT IS… not knowing when to say no; so life can be pretty jam- packed. IF I COULD CHANGE ANYTHING IN MY LIFE IT WOULD BE… very little different. I would perhaps wave a magic wand to bring my far-flung family in New Zealand, Spain and London a little closer. IF I COULD BE A CELEBRITY FOR A DAY, IT WOULD BE… purgatory. I prefer to beaver away quietly in the background. THE BEST ADVICE I’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN IS… from my mother, not a particularly religious woman, who felt that every day was a gift from God and you should use it wisely and not waste it. WHAT’S THAT? YOU MISSED WOSAT?

W

e might not have had the balmy, sunny ‘let’s hit the beach’ weather that the south of England got, but the first bank holiday weekend in May saw the west of the Island awash with creativity – and just the odd spot of rain. WOSAT – the Western Open Studios Art Trail – saw 42 local artists and craftspeople working together to promote the visual arts. Organised by the Creative Network, exhibitions, demonstrations and even ad-hoc lessons took place in venues in Peel and its surroundings, with many artists opening their own studios for the weekend. This is the third annual WOSAT, and this year, for the first time, it included the Peel Yarnbombers, who flooded the area with colour which couldn’t help but make visitors smile. This was a real community event – yarnbomber-inchief Sara Hogg had no difficulty in persuading the whole Island to donate yarn to provide the raw materials for manic creativity. Youth clubs, schools, the WI, the Brownies, wearable Art experts, grannies, homeschoolers and more picked up their knitting needles and crochet hooks to knit bicycles (Doreen Dixon and Sue Robinson), deckchairs (Joan’s Wool Shop), cover the trees outside QEII and the Western Swimming Pool, and ‘Unite’, squares knitted by – amongst others - St John’s Brownies were joined together into paths leading up to the cathedral in Peel. But the piece de resistance was the transformation of the ‘pepper pot’ lighthouse into a Dalek. Anyone stumbling out of the Marine after closing time might have thought they’d had a drink too many as they spotted it illuminated by the flashing light. There was so much to see – a full three-da

44

weekend’s worth – and it seems unfair to pick out anyone in particular, but artists included such well-known names as Jeremy Paul – who encouraged young visitors to the Isle Gallery in Tynwald Mills to pick up a paintbrush – Juan Moore (whose brand new ‘Image a Day’ works on his website every day this year are part of the Island of Culture celebrations), and Faye Christian, who had her potter’s wheel up and running in the Corrin Hall to enable visitors to have a go. Matt Owen (who spent Friday constructing the Dalek frame for the yarnbombers) demonstrated raku firing outside the cathedral, and Kathryn Mitchell opened her studio near Bishopscourt to show how she produces her beautiful ceramics. In Kirk Patrick – as well as fantastic homemade cakes – various artists showed their work and the yarnbomb organisers were able to stop bombing and settle back into creating including spinning wool (Sarah Hogg) and working on linocuts (Rosi Wood). Kate Jerry spent the weekend showing young would-be artists how to make prints in her own studio – as well as showing off her very own ‘Manksi’ in the back yard - whilst back at the Isle Gallery, Charlotte Lucas worked on her printing in front of an appreciative audience. If you missed this explosive celebration of local talent – and now wish you hadn’t – then WOSAT will be back (perhaps even bigger and better?) in 2015, so keep your eyes open for details nearer the time. And, if you’ve been inspired, then contact the Isle Gallery to find out about their range of art courses for adults and children held throughout the year in conjunction with the Arts Council and the Year of Culture. UNBLURRED LINES

BETWEEN THE LINES: TRACING THE JOURNEY OF THE BRETON STRIPE

Words | Louise Le Pelley

Close your eyes and think of France… and one of the first images you will probably perceive will be the stereotypical image of a beret wearing Frenchman clad in stripes with a cliché garland of onions lying casually around his neck. Whilst this outfit often serves as a go-tofashion pastiche for fancy dress parties and French themed pub-crawls, the striped Breton shirt, which first appeared on the fashion scene in 1917, is a simple yet sophisticated style choice that remains in vogue today. Coming from a nautical island, it seems only appropriate to dedicate a bit of time to exploring the notso-secret darling of the fashionista’s wardrobe – the Breton jumper aka la marinière. A style legend was unknowingly born when it was decreed on the 27 March 1858 Act, that a knitted striped jumper was to be made the official uniform of the French navy. Originally, each uniform jumper sported 21 stripes – one stripe to commemorate each one of Napoleon Bonaparte’s victories. The eye-catching colour blocking was deemed a strategic way of spotting men overboard, the white and navy blue tops being easy visible in the waves. The style quickly became adopted

48

by sailors and mariners all across Northern France, not only in their time at sea but also when going about their everyday lives onshore… it was only a matter of time before the look caught the eye of a young up-andcoming fashion designer, Coco Chanel. One of Coco Chanel’s first boutiques was situated in Deauville, a popular upper class seaside resort in lower Normandy, and it was during her time in Deauville that she first became inspired by nautical attire. In the early 1920s the practical marinière found itself transported from the seaside to the city – the boyish androgynous jumper proving to be a welcome escape from the tightly laced fashions of the belle époque period. After serving as style inspiration for characters in Scott Fitzgerald’s 1934 novel “Tender is the Night”, flash forward to the 1950s and the Breton jumper became de rigueur on both the French Riviera and the silver screen. Worn by a smouldering James Dean in ‘Rebel without a Cause’ and a dapper Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘To Catch a Thief”, the Breton was also adopted by Cary Grant’s co-star, future Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, who gave the Breton jumper a prized place in her personal wardrobe. The jumper became a key component of Nouvelle Vague films in the 1960s such as ‘Breathless’ starring Jean Seberg who wowed with her ‘gamine’ boyish pixie hair cut and stripes, and the striped jumper was also worn by the troubled temptress Catherine incarnated by Jeanne

Moreau in ‘Jules et Jim’. From Pablo Picasso to Andy Warhol, from Audrey Hepburn to Brigitte Bardot, the Breton jumper was (and remains) stylish leisurewear for any man or woman in the limelight. After Brigitte Bardot wore the look in the 1963 film ‘Le Mépris’, the fashion pack took the sleepy fi shing village of St Tropez by storm, elevating the Breton stripes and nautical look to dizzying new heights. The jumper became the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon and subsequent night out at Club 55 on the French Riviera. Head down to Cannes, Monaco or St Tropez today, and you’ll notice that the stripy look is still popular – being worn by the bourgeois millionaires on their super yachts who head to the Riviera in their droves to drink champagne and party through the night… as well as by the casual tourists - everyone else in between. In the 1990s, the Breton took on a new aesthetic – it soon became a regular feature on Kurt Cobain, frontman of iconic grunge band Nirvana. Nowadays, the Breton is perhaps most associated with fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, who emblazons stripes on his perfume bottles, incorporates them into his fashion collections and even entered a lucrative marketing campaign with a certain soft drinks company - adding his nautical stripes onto cans and bottles to create a limited edition designer look. This symbiotic partnership made for a quaint and quirky high fashion accessory that anyone could afford.

When you next find yourself shopping in France being greeted by the black and white stripes of the Brittany flag, why not take a stroll INTRA-MUROS - maybe you can find yourself (and the rest of the family) a genuine marinière? In 2014, it appears that the iconic French stripe is still going strong, with stars and V.I.Ps such as Kate Moss, Kirsten Dunst, Alexa Chung and even HRH the Duchess of Cambridge (on her tour of New Zealand toting a sailor style clad Prince George) championing their horizontal stripes. So this spring and summer, why don’t you bring out the old stripy classic? It’s not just reserved for adults either – even if your children are a little bit naughty, you can instantly transform them into well behaved winsome looking 1950s children with a Breton striped jumper. Let’s see if we can bring a little touch of nautical but nice je ne sais quoi to the streets of .

A further 65% admit to not feeling confident in their outfit choices, according to a TK Maxx Style Census. As well as lacking in style confidence, half of those surveyed confess to wearing the same items for the past year, indicating that, as a nation, we’re too scared to break out of a style rut.

EMBRACE THE FLAME

MODE STAND BY YOUR BACK DOORS - THE NATION’S PREPARING TO ABANDON PERFECTLY ADEQUATE KITCHENS AND LAUNCH ITSELF INTO THE GREAT OUTDOORS FOR THE BARBECUE SEASON. Whether it’s parties in the garden with family and friends, afternoon tea or festival feasts, there’s something irresistible about eating in the great outdoors. SIZZLING FACTS :: A barbie may have changed history. William, Duke of Normandy, is shown enjoying a barbecue on the famous Bayeux Tapestry before setting off, suitably fortified, for his successful invasion in 1066. :: British settlers in Virginia, USA, in the 17th century may have been the inspiration for the modern barbecue phenomenon. They

had some of the earliest recorded outdoor cooking feasts. :: The word barbecue may originate from the French phrase ‘barbe a queue’ meaning ‘whiskers to tail’ - a phrase used by settlers in Louisiana to characterise spit-roasting a whole animal. Here are some recipes for you to try at your BBQ this summer...

SLOW COOKED LAMB BREAST WITH CARIBBEAN SPICES (Serves 6)

HOW TO:

INGREDIENTS • 900g-1.3kg lean boneless lamb breast (unrolled) • For the Caribbean Marinade: • 2 small onions, peeled and quartered • 2 scotch bonnet peppers, deseeded and halved • 4 garlic cloves, peeled • 2tsp ground allspice • 1x20g pack fresh thyme leaves • 100ml dark soy sauce • 50ml dark rum • 1tsp salt • 3tbsp brown sugar

1) To prepare the marinade; put all the ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

TIP

54

3) Lightly slash both sides of each sardine in three or four places. Rub the lime and chilli mixture inside and over each fish. Place the sardines in a shallow dish. Scatter the coriander over them. Place the reserved lime slices over the coriander and refrigerate for one hour. 4) Brush some of the oil over the inside of a wire fish holder, if using, and on both sides of the sardines. Discard the lime slices and place the fish in the holder or on the grill. If no holder is available, for ease of handling I suggest you use a pair (2 pairs if serving more than 8 sardines) of long flat-bladed skewers to impale several fish in one go. Impale the first skewer just below the head and the second skewer just above the tail. Alternate the sardines head to tail on the parallel blades. 5) Cook the sardines for three to four minutes on each side. Baste with the remaining oil frequently during cooking. Serve with wedges cut from the two remaining limes. TIP

SPICY GRILLED AUBERGINE (Serves 6)

INGREDIENTS • 1 large aubergine, cut into 1.5cm (1 1/2in) thick slices • 1 to 2tsp salt, to remove the water from aubergine • 2tbsp olive oil • 2tsp red wine vinegar • 2tsp fresh lemon juice

• • • • • •

1tsp pressed garlic 1tsp crushed dried chillies 1tsp herb seasoning mix 2tbsp olive oil, to brush aubergine for barbecuing 1tbsp chopped fresh parsley 1tbsp chopped fresh mint

HOW TO: 1) Put the aubergine slices in a colander in a single layer and sprinkle with salt. Leave to drain for 20 minutes, then turn, sprinkle the other side with salt and leave to drain for 20 minutes more. 2) While the aubergine drains, whisk together the olive oil, wine vinegar, lemon juice, garlic, crushed chillies and herb seasoning. Set the spicy sauce aside. 3) Preheat the barbecue to medium. Press each aubergine slice between two pieces of kitchen paper to dry them. Brush both sides with olive oil. 4) Place the aubergine on the grill and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, rotating after a few minutes on each side if you want to get grill marks. 5) Watch the aubergine slices carefully because they go from gently browned to charred quickly. When the aubergine is cooked, remove from the grill and place in a large bowl. 6) Stir in the spicy sauce to coat. Leave to cool slightly, then sprinkle the parsley and mint over the aubergine and serve warm or at room temperature.

:: Use corn oil as opposed to olive oil, as it has a much higher smoke point.

Let’s just come out and say it, life’s too short for parsnip crisps It seems impossible to cut down on the carbs without that nagging empty feeling all day… especially when so many ‘light’, ‘skinny’, ‘guilt-free’ snacks taste of nothing but cardboard and despair. That’s why David Robinson created MannBiltong -

the low-carb snack that dares to taste good.

B

iltong is a simple yet delicious South African food, made from strips of spiced and dried meat. Developed by resourceful Dutch settlers, who needed a way to preserve meat in the hot climate, it’s been popular with South Africans ever since (not least on the terraces at rugby matches). Now, using the best Manx topside of beef and David’s own special blend of spices, MannBiltong is taking the Island’s taste buds by storm… and building quite a following. A world of good in every bite…

At 50% protein and just 3% fat, MannBiltong is becoming increasingly popular as a great addition to a highprotein, low-carb diet, and a fine alternative to fatty, sugary, ‘empty’ snacks. Perfect for an active lifestyle, it provides the kind of slow-release energy boost that might just keep you strong enough to resist the siren call of the chocolate drawer. A bit of MannBiltong can enhance all kinds of recipes too.

“You can add it to soups, stews and salads,” David explains, “and we especially like it on a slice of cheese on toast. Or just scoff it straight from the packet as the perfect companion to a cold beer or a glass of wine.” hint of local a our Constantly experimenting with new flavours and locally-sourced ingredients, David has created a range of biltong and droëwors (dried sausage) to suit any palate; from classic garlic and BBQ to fiery piri-piri and chilli. Look out for the MannBiltong stall at fairs and farmers’ markets around the Isle of Man, where he’ll be happy to take you through samples of all the flavours so you can find one (or two, or three) you really love. You’ll also find it at Robinson’s on the Terrace in Douglas and Radcliffe Butchers in Castletown. “MannBiltong is a great mix of South African tradition and Manx pride,” says David. “You’d be hard-pressed to think of a better combination.”

WORDS | Anne Berry | The Wine Cellar

D

espite the number of different wines around, a pattern of popular styles will invariably arise. The fashionable sparkling wine of the moment is, and has been for a while, Prosecco. Prosecco is the ‘non Champagne’ drink of choice at summer parties, weddings and general imbibing with friends.

All Prosecco comes from Italy, and more specifically from a small region, Conegliano e Valdobbiadene, and it must contain at least 85% Glera, an indigenous variety that, until 2009, was known as Prosecco! Confused yet? Read on! With Prosecco being the name of a grape variety, the producers in the region were concerned that the name Prosecco could have a negative impact on their reputation if used in other regions and even countries. (A Prosecco had already appeared in Australia). If the style was not the same or similar, it could confuse consumers and lead to Prosecco losing its identity. While Champagne is a style that may only be produced in the Champagne region of France, Prosecco was the name of a grape, and therefore anyone making wine from the

Prosecco grape anywhere in the world was entitled to label it as such. Before 2009, Prosecco was mainly produced in a demarcated, regulated area (DOC) around the two towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. These towns were at the heart of the region and this area was regarded as the most suitable for growing the Prosecco grape. Located around it was an IGT (equivalent of a French Vin de Pays), much larger in size and with less strict regulations regarding grape variety and yield. In 2009, the DOC region was upgraded to DOCG Prosecco, the top classification for Italian wine regions, with the surrounding IGT being upgraded to DOC Prosecco. The grape variety was renamed as Glera, but within the DOCG and DOC, a wine may still be labelled Prosecco if it is produced from the Glera grape within the DOC and DOCG. At the same time, legislation was passed to make it illegal for producers outside the DOC and DOCG to use the name Prosecco. The advantages for the region are that quality has been improved, with stricter regulations regarding yield, resulting in a drop in production. With up to 50 million fewer bottles on the market, there’s less poor inexpensive wine around.

Prosecco Rose is now rarely seen, as sparkling rose wines are rarely produced from the white Glera grape. To be labelled as Prosecco, the wine must contain 85% of the Glera grape. There are some extremely good pink sparkling wines produced in the region, but may not be labelled Prosecco even if they are produced in exactly the same way. To be labelled as Prosecco, EU law states they must contain 85% of the Glera grape. The production method is the Charmat method, when the second fermentation takes place in a tank rather than in the bottle. This helps retain the aromas of the Prosecco grape, which is one of its most appealing features. So, Prosecco may be deliciously easy to drink, but it is far more complicated to understand the finer points of the legislation. At The Wine Cellar, we have a wide selection of sparkling wines from the DOC Prosecco and from the area around Valdobbiadene. Starting at £8.95 up to £13.00, all are worth tasting, whether they have Prosecco on the label or not!

PROPERTY NEWS

Black Grace Cowley Focuses On Residential Market The advent of the new 'selling season' at estate agents Black Grace Cowley has seen some important staff changes in the Residential Department. Nick Cooper, who has led the Department for the last 12 years, is moving out of his full time office based role, and taking up the position of Consultant to the firm, specifically targeting the High Net Worth area of the market, where he has significant experience. This new direction will give Nick the freedom to dedicate his time and efforts to clients selling and acquiring high value properties on the Island, whilst continuing to attract wealthy individuals and their businesses here in the future. Senior Partner Mark Grace commented: "This is an interesting time in the market. We are seeing a good deal more activity and sales, particularly in properties up to a value of £350,000, and the board has decided to reorganise resources to best serve that area of the market. With that in mind, Tim Groves will take up position of Head of Residential, and both I and the Board believe that with his enthusiasm and ability, he is exactly the right person to be driving the department forward at this time. Alongside Tim, our two very experienced members of the existing sales team, Stephen

Sutherland and Will Goff, will continue as normal, with the team ably supported by office manager Sue Gibson.” Mark continued: “Tim, a Chartered Surveyor and registered Estate Agent & Valuer, has been a Director of Black Grace Cowley for over 5 years and a very successful part of our Commercial Agency Department for 10 years." On taking up his new role Tim commented, "I am thoroughly looking forward to this new challenge and, whilst there are big shoes to fill, I'm confident that working alongside Stephen, Will and Office Manager Sue Gibson as part of our new look Residential Department has all the makings of a great success story for Black Grace Cowley." Tim, Stephen and Will can be contacted on (01624) 645555, via email or the website. Individual sales team members’ direct lines and email addresses are available on the website 'About Us' page at www.blackgracecowley.com.

FOUR HOME INSURANCE MISTAKES TO AVOID Sandra Taylor, Personal Lines Manager at Rossborough Insurance, reviews some of the most common mistakes made when insuring property and possessions. INCORRECT VALUATIONS Research suggests that a quarter of UK homeowners underestimate the value of their contents and one in five has no contents insurance at all. If something is lost or damaged, the insurance company usually replace as new, so it’s important to keep up with current prices. FORGETTING TO UPDATE COVER Homeowners regularly fail to update their cover and incorrectly believe items are automatically covered. For instance, people purchase collectibles or expensive items without considering the impact on their insurance cover.

Through employing a surveyor, using a sums insured calculator, or using an insurance company’s own experts, accurate estimates of rebuild costs can be made. NO TRAVEL COVER Travel insurance policies are often insufficient for covering possessions when on holiday. Many homeowners are unaware that their contents policy can also cover belongings away from the home.

INACCURATE REBUILD ESTIMATES Building insurance covers many aspects of rebuilds, such as demolition and architects’ fees, but also provides for alternative accommodation when an insured property is uninhabitable.

APPLEBY SPRING SEMINAR ADDRESSES THE VALUE OF IFCS TO THE GLOBAL ECONOMY Offshore jurisdictions like the Isle of Man must work harder to promote the positive contribution they make to the global economy according to International Finance Centres Forum Consultant Naomi Lawton. Speaking at the 2014 Spring Seminar of Appleby Isle of Man, held at the Manx Museum in front of an audience of over 80 invited public and private sector guests, she warned much more work is needed to counter attacks from G8 governments and Non-Governmental Organisations which blame offshore IFCs for poverty in developing nations. Naomi said there are substantive and compelling arguments to demonstrate that offshore IFCs significantly benefit economies around the world. She explained: ‘The positive contributions of IFCs are complex and not entirely understood. If a myth is to be debunked, positive action is required. We need to rebut the allegations that IFCs, including the Isle of Man, are somehow bad for the world economy.’ Naomi added offshore IFCS should proactively engage in promoting the positive case for IFCs and counter the ignorance and popular misconceptions which are otherwise unchallenged. She concluded: ‘All stakeholders need to stand up and promote the IFCs. To a large extent this is a PR battle. We need to get out there, man up, and make our case.’

Economic Development Minister John Shimmin outlined the Government’s plan for continuing to diversify and grow the economy, Vision 2020, explaining how the Island must cope with shifting patterns in how it earns and spends its money and focus promoting employment, income and economic stability. Although there is work to do, he said he is optimistic about the Island’s financial future. Sean Dowling, Managing Partner of Appleby (Isle of Man) LLC, thanked the speakers and guests for attending the fourth Appleby Spring Seminar.

FIRST NAMES GROUP RANKS FIRST ON EPRIVATECLIENT'S LIST OF LEADING TRUST COMPANIES Global, independent trust, fund and corporate services provider First Names Group heads up the eprivateclient’s list of Top 25 UK and UK offshore trust companies for 2014. The Group has featured on the list for the last four years, but this is its first time at the top of the table. eprivateclient is the industry’s leading publication for private client professionals and publishes the list of top trust companies in the UK and UK offshore annually. It noted that after two years of falling fee income, the 2014 rankings showed an increasingly confident sector with fee income and staff numbers up on last year. The data also shows that the trust company sector has recorded rises in terms of the number of client-facing directors and trust officers. This is certainly true for First Names Group, which has seen significant growth through both acquisitions and new business since its MBO in mid-2012 and subsequent rebrand. The Group now operates across 12 locations and currently has a global headcount of over 550 ‘First Names’.

Commercial Director of First Names Group, Kevin O'Connell comments; "We are delighted with our position on eprivateclient's list of Top 25 Trust Companies, especially as the private client sector is such a core part of our business. Whilst there has been a notable shift on the part of some trust companies in recent times to focus solely on corporate clients the private client arena is the largest part of our business and we are fully committed to its future growth. We believe we win business in this sphere because of our focus on building long-term relationships, our independent approach, superior service and bespoke solutions."

LOCAL INVESTMENT FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR TECHNOLOGY Local business figures David and Alison Dorricott have invested £1 million for the International Centre for Technology (ICT) University. The sum takes the funds raised by the Manx Educational Foundation (MEF) to £7 million, with only £5.5 million left to gather for the project to take root at the Nunnery. The ICT is set to advance students with leading technology and business skills of the highest academic standards, backed by Lancaster University.

82

Since the agreement with government to sell the Nunnery in October 2013, the MEF has made substantial progress with its proposals for development, and the Council of Ministers has agreed a three-month extension to the exclusivity arrangement with the MEF for the purchase of the Nunnery site. Up to this point, the bulk of the ICT’s funding has come from private sources both in the Island and internationally – but the MEF firmly believe that local commitment is key to making the university a success. www.theict.im ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

HOME STRATEGIC TEAM SET ISO STANDARDS PACE AS TRAINED FIRST AIDERS Health and safety is definitely no joking matter among the 25-strong team who work at the island’s leading marketing, design and public relations agency as all have undergone rigorous training in giving first aid and have the certificates to prove it. “We all know how to go about resuscitating someone who has gone into cardiac arrest and, importantly, where the defibrillator is kept and how to use it in what might be a life or death situation,” said Home Strategic managing director Steve Wicks. The Douglas-based agency embarked on first aid training for all its employees as a further stage in gaining ISO standards which it sees as crucial in helping to deliver an efficient and well run business. It already holds the ISO9001 Quality standard, ISO14001 Environmental standard and the ISO27001 Information Security. It is now looking to the ISO18001, the international standard for Health and Safety. “There is often quite a lot of negativity around the very mention of ISOs but rather than force the business into the standard it is more about making the standard fit the business. We believe they are important in a constantly evolving business world which is why we have embraced them,” said Mr Wicks. “In terms of health and safety we recognise we have a responsibility to our staff, customers and contractors to provide a safe working environment.” Kevin Burnell, director at ISO QA Ltd, which guides companies through the complexities but increasingly important ISO certification standards, said: “Home Strategic is taking health and safety

NEW RECRUITMENT FIRM LINKS ISLE OF MAN TO INTERNATIONAL JOB MARKETS A new specialist recruitment firm has opened its doors, with the intention of creating a link between the Island’s job market and opportunities in London and Malta, as well as other offshore jurisdictions. Boston Link aims to address the needs of an increasing number of companies with a multi-jurisdictional reach, particularly those in financial services and eGaming. Backed by Isle of Man based Boston Group and run by experienced international recruiters, Boston Link has offices in the West End of London, Malta and the Isle of Man. Managing Director Julian Perigo, who joined Boston Link from Michael Page Offshore, commented: “An increasing number of Manx companies are looking outwards and expanding their reach globally. Securing the right talent has always been a challenge and as companies continue to expand this will only become a bigger issue. As such, we have recognised an opportunity to provide a highly specialised service, offering a unique network to both companies and job-seekers. More information can be found at www.boston-link.com. issues very seriously and is actually doing so over and above what is legally required. First aid training also helps to build a positive staff culture.” He added: “There is often the assumption that achieving an ISO standard is laborious when in fact, with appropriate advice, it can be implemented with minimum fuss and minimum disruption to the business.” The training was carried out by Phil Bennett, commercial training and marketing manager with St John Ambulance Isle of Man who said he would like to see more companies on the island adopt the same attitude to health and safety issues as Home Strategic. “Nobody should suffer for lack of trained first aiders in a company,” said Mr Bennett. “It’s worth emphasising that the chances of someone surviving a heart attack when there is a defibrillator immediately available, coupled with the all important knowledge how to use it, is around 80 per cent. This drops to less than 5 per cent when there is no defibrillator, or it’s there but no one knows how to use it.”

IMPRESSIVE NEW BUSINESS AND CLIENT REFERRAL LEVELS CONTINUE TO DRIVE STRONG GROWTH AT NEDBANK PRIVATE WEALTH Nedbank Private Wealth, the multi-award-winning private bank and wealth manager, has announced strong growth in new business flows for 2013 and the first quarter of 2014. Business flows in 2013 saw lending levels up by almost 10 per cent, deposits up 12 per cent, and both assets under management and administration up 20 per cent. The business also reported continuing positive growth in the number of new clients which surpassed targeted levels by 15 per cent. Greg Horton, managing director at Nedbank Private Wealth, said: “It is certainly very pleasing to see such strong growth rates across all areas of our operations and praise is due not only to our staff, but also to both our clients and professional intermediaries who continue to sing our praises and drive the high level of new client referrals we’re experiencing.” Horton reported that total holdings on the business’s award-winning integrated banking and investment platform, Focus, were continuing to grow strongly. As at the end of the first quarter of 2014, holdings had increased an impressive 11 per cent year-on-year rising to £2.3 billion and reflecting a new record high. Horton sees the driver for this growth as being the bank’s consistent profile of success and excellent reputation for integrity and exemplary client service: “We have never lost sight of the fact we exist to serve our clients, not ourselves, and these are exciting times as our new brand is now becoming well and truly established in our markets. Consistent upward momentum has been firmly established and we anticipate strong profitable growth in 2014, as the business begins to see the benefits from a growing footprint across

our various geographical locations.” With the vast majority of business emanating from existing client and professional intermediary referrals, Horton points to the results recently received from the business’s 2013 independently assessed client survey: “This was undertaken by the UK’s leading customer survey specialist, The Leadership Factor, and in terms of their overall Client Satisfaction IndexTM, it places our business in the top 10 per cent of all businesses across the UK. We have also been advised that we continue to hold the UK record for speed of response to clients, an achievement we have held for the past five years. ” To add the icing to an already tasty cake, earlier this year Nedbank Private Wealth achieved the maximum three star designation, rated “extraordinary”, from the UK Best Companies Accreditation. It is one of only 123 companies from all sectors and sizes across the entire UK to obtain this coveted accolade. In addition, for a remarkable straight tenth year, the business secured a listing within the Sunday Times sponsored Best 100 Small Companies to Work For. Another impressive performance from this multi-award winning business whose reputation as a bank focused on applying sound morals continues to grow.

As part of ACQ magazine’s Global Awards 2014 the firm’s managing partner, Clive Dixon, was also recognised as “Leading Private Advisor of the Year”.

The Cayman National Group chose the Isle of Man and the Steam Railway’s Pullman dining experience for its 40th anniversary celebrations. On an unseasonably warm evening in late April 60 guests, among whom were group board members from the Cayman Islands and introducers and clients from the Isle of Man office, boarded the train in Douglas to enjoy an evening of celebrations to mark the founding in 1974 of the group which has its headquarters in the Cayman Islands and offices in the Isle of Man and Dubai. Cayman National’s Isle of Man managing director Ian Bancroft said: ‘The evening was a resounding success, due in no small part to the unique experience of travelling in such magnificently restored vintage carriages and a superbly presented dinner produced by Steve Quirke and his team from The Ticket Hall.

The awards are based on a poll of ACQ’s 106,000+ subscribers including CEO’s, CFO's and other corporate finance and private equity executives from all corners of the globe. Since 2005 the ACQ Global Awards recognise industry leaders, eminent individuals, exemplary teams and distinguished firms in a variety of fields. “I’m so pleased, we have come so far,” said Clive. “As a team we can be extremely proud to achieve this international recognition.” Over the past 25 years MSIOM has grown in the Isle of Man from a start up to a multidiscipline firm with a team of over 65. SPORTS NEWS AROUND THE ISLAND YACHT RACE 2014 The crew of Manx Sailing and Club’s Sea Pie of Cultra took home a host of silverware and the overall win in the 2014 IOMA Fund and Investment Management Round the Island Race. Boxing

The challenge of night-time sailing and an unsettled weather forecast conspired to reduce the number of entries and only four of the nine starters finished the 80-mile offshore race.

Cycling

The deceptive calm at the start in Ramsey bay gave way to stronger southerly winds and seas of up to two metres during the upwind slog along the west coast once the fleet rounded the Point of Ayre. After passing the Calf and Langness a two-way battle developed between Jerry Colman’s Sea Pie and Kuba Szymanski’s Polished Manx, who fought for the lead up the island’s east coast in variable winds and near-total darkness.

A RELAY SPECIAL WELCOME FOR GLASGOW 2014 BATON

The Queen’s Baton Relay, which as an integral part of the build-up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, received a warm Manx welcome when it visited the Island over the weekend. Thousands turned out to cheer Team Isle of Man competitors as they proudly carried the baton around the Island, accompanied by Clyde the official Glasgow 2014 mascot. Chief Minister Hon Allan Bell MHK welcomed the baton relay when it arrived at Ronaldsway on Friday [May 16]. It also visited The Buchan School and the Old House of Keys in Castletown where children took part in the Castle Rushen Challenge – a fun event organised by Manx National Heritage. The relay travelled to Douglas Railway Station on a train pulled by an engine named Caledonia which was built in Glasgow. A fantastic first day was topped off by the baton and Team Isle of Man competitors appearing on the BBC’s The One Show with Chris Evans and Alex Jones from a studio set up at the Villa Marina.

On Saturday the baton was cheered on by children taking part in the Manx Youth Games at the NSC. In the afternoon shoppers in Douglas welcomed the relay and it popped into the Manx Telecom shop in Strand Street. Then it was off to Laxey, and later the baton travelled by tram to the top of Snaefell. Sunday’s events included a trip to the House of Manannan in Peel followed by a trip on a longboat to the Peel RNLI station. There were more events at sea in the afternoon with a spectacular flotilla in Douglas. The baton was carried on a RIB, and then transported by the Coastguard who waded into the sea and carried it up the beach by a ‘Quadski’ amphibious quad bike specially imported from US for the occasion. On Monday the baton was taken to businesses which have supported the Team Isle of Man Champions fundraising initiative. The Champions are Auxesia, Creechurch Capital, Heron & Brearley, IOMA Fund and Investment Management Limited, Isle of Man Creamery, Karsons Pharmacy, Manx Telecom, MM&C, Skanco and SMP Partners.

Event organiser Paul Cawley, of KPMG, commented on how 2014 is set to be different from last year: “It’s really great to see so many teams from across the Island signing up for the event, both because it means we’ll have a fun day and because it means more support for this worthy cause. This year, with prizes for fancy dress as well as fastest time, it should be a really entertaining day for both runners and spectators.”

FOOTBALL FUN AND CHARITY IS THE WINNER Charity will be the winner at a fun football tournament being held on Saturday 12th July in aid of Manx Cancer Help and the Mifumi School project. The event will be the day before the World Cup Final so football fans will be able to enjoy a little of their own football fever before settling down to watch the world’s best in Brazil. ALL THINGS EQUESTRIAN in the Summer time

B

ack in the Island, I recently took my horse, ‘Monty’s Star’, to Conrhenny Equestrian Centre on Wednesday 14 May. This was the first outdoor show jumping event of the year on grass.

as evidenced by the number of ‘outdoor’ equestrian events making their way on to rider’s schedules. Having said that, I’m sure the spectator’s at Badminton would disagree – shocking weather. Albeit that did make for an exciting, open event and possibly one of the most closely fought for some time. Congratulations and his horse ‘Paulank Brockagh’ on the win.

Conrhenny is steeped in tradition. It is run and owned by Mrs Pat Osborn, who has been at the heart of the Conrhenny story for over 40 years. As well as an equestrian centre, running local affiliated and unaffiliated events - it is also a working farm and stud. I myself having ridden a number of Conrhenny horses, both on and off Island. I’ll be covering the history in more detail in a later article. Despite riding for over 25 years – eek – and competing in numerous major championships in the UK, I still get butterflies before a show! Hopefully a sign I still love it and want to do well. I proceeded to get Monty all togged up in his tack, and packed my stud kit - an essential for jumping on grass. These, as you might expect, are very similar to the studs on a football boot. They are metal and screwed into the horse’s shoes to add much needed grip on take-off and landing. Monty always knows when we’re off to an event. At 21 - he is no spring chicken, but he still enjoys competing at a lower level. Bristling with excitement (perhaps a little too much), he exuberantly paraded onto the road and skipped up the ramp into the lorry. A mere 15 - minutes later we were at Conrhenny. It was a bright, slightly overcast, but calm evening with a hint of freshly cut grass in the air, mixed with the vague essence of hoof oil. Trundling down to the show field, there was the familiar hustle and bustle of a show, yet it was still relatively relaxed. First things first, my pre-event checklist:

90

Find out which class is currently on and where they are up to

Review the course on paper, and the jump-off course

Watch a few riders and commit the course to memory

TOP-TIP: ALWAYS TRY TO DESCRIBE THE LOOK OF EACH FENCE WHEN LEARNING THE COURSE, RATHER THAN JUST REPEATING THE NUMBERS - MUCH EASIER TO LEARN Having completed my personal checklist, I then unloaded Monty and got him warmedup ready for action. It may have been a smaller entry than normal, holidays and work preventing a few going, but there was still plenty to watch. There was the regular field of competitors including Colleen Miller, Lottie Pote, Abby Corlett, Callum Staley and Vicky Quirk, but with a few new faces and partnerships including Katie Oliver-Beedle and Sammy Cattle with her new horse ‘Rockmount Kallie’. A lovely gray mare that I think Sammy will do very well on. My young rider to watch is Lucy Corlett. It was a well-built, but tricky course, with all of us in need of some ‘match practice’ on grass. That said we had some lovely jumping from everyone. The night didn’t go without an element of drama, with brave Lottie taking a tumble, but getting straight back up to jump a nice round. Made of tough stuff us riders. I’m already looking forward to the next event. Hopefully I might see you there too. MOTORING

CREATIVITY KNOWS NO BOUNDS. CREATIVE VISION CAN BE APPLIED ACROSS MANY GENRES WITHOUT LOSING RELEVANCE, AND IT’S OFTEN THIS KIND OF CREATIVE CROSS-POLLINATION THAT CAN YIELD SURPRISINGLY EFFECTIVE RESULTS.

Case in point: at the top of this page is a photograph of fashion designer Jeremy Scott’s Smart forJeremy, which resembles a Smart forTwo caught in the midst of a perverse sexual exchange with a Pokemon. Frankly, it’s just ridiculous, as are Pierce Brosnan’s paintings. Yes, Brosnan, Pierce Brosnan, former 007 likes to paint when he’s not performing in musicals these days. Fashion and automotive design mix with varying results, so let’s take a look...

PAUL SMITH MINI In the years between BMW’s purchase of the Rover Group from BA and its eventual demise, re-re-re-naming and sale to some Chinese people for a tenner once the parts of the company that weren’t as rotten as the majority of BLMC body panels manufactured in the 1970s had been expertly extracted and capitalised on, British fashion designer Paul Smith dripped his multicoloured mark on the outgoing Mini Sprite in an attempt to celebrate all things British, and I like it. They even sold a limited edition of them in a more subtle shade of ‘Paul Smith Blue’ rather than outfitted in his trademark coloured stripes as seen here. Don’t you think it looks ruddy charming, old boy?

SPENCER HART CLS 63 AMG Dechromed badges? Check. Dirty great rumbling, earthquake inducing V8? Check. Brown leather? Check. Quilting? I’m sold. Nick Hart, founder of Saville Row tailors Spencer Hart stepped through the factory doors at AMG and ticked all of the right boxes whilst outfitting his take on Mercedes’ CLS 63 AMG shooting brake. Hart describes his brand as ‘a bit unnecessary’, just like a 550 plus horsepower estate car - talk about a made to measure collaboration.

From the satin look and massive metalflakes in the Midnight Blue paint colour they’ve concocted to the chocolate brown interior and that quilting (the only quilted fabric a man should posess are the leather seats in his car - the jackets are out, boys) and with the badges and rims receiving the matt black treatment it’s a nearperfect blend of subtelty and individuality that retains ample room in the boot for your Hermes x Snap On toolbox. If such a thing exists. Or your dog. Or your wife’s shoes. Whatever you like, really.

Lady Gaga may not be the most perfect role model, and indeed it may seem that her eccentric styles contradict the lyrics in her mellifluous, slightly ironic song “Fashion”, in which she is “looking good and feeling fine”. Be that as it may, even the Lady’s outrageous clothing would be nothing without an array of gadgets and apps that both inspire and disgust all of those with a penchant for fashion. With fashion being one of the most dominant factors in our society, almost entirely constituting the way we not only dress but the products we buy, it has been important, especially in a technologically advanced culture, for companies to constantly keep up with trends and “the mode”, forcing outlandish, sometimes downright ugly designs to become what we see everyday, and what

we feel we must buy with our (or our parents’) hard-earned money. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes there are moments of true beauty in the fashion world (Apple, take a bow), and in this article I’m going to show that the fashion and the technological worlds can combine in both horrifying and awe-inspiring ways.

Q&Q SMILESOLAR WATCH The SmileSolar Watch is not the first solar-powered watch, and it certainly won’t be the last. The Citizen Eco-Drive has been doing it for a while, however that same watch has an uncanny ability to make your wrist look like a centerpiece from an 80s camp convention. In a day where minimalism and style go hand in hand, aren’t the simplistic, almost infantile styles of Swatches and the like far more sought-after? Welcome, the Q&Q SmileSolar. This small, plastic timepiece made only of recycled materials blends perfectly the environmental concern that is present today and at the same time the style of the day, never needing maintenance, only a bit of time in the sun every now and then, running for 120 days in complete darkness after being fully charged. Of course, this device has the same pitfalls as all solar-powered products in that it may well suffer during the winter months, or even at night if you lose track of how charged it is. However, if you do end up trapped in darkness until the watch runs out, a dysfunctional timepiece will undoubtedly be the least of the world’s worries.

CLOTH BY CLOTH MINDED Just as everybody in the world feels that a meal is not a meal if it is not shared on some form of social media site, what is fashion if every like-minded person that can find a wifi connection can’t see it? It’s now easier than ever to share, blog and keep track of your seemingly infinite space in your wardrobe. Cloth, the simplynamed, free app by the company Cloth Minded, allows you to upload photos of individual pieces or your favorite outfits onto a social platform that allows others to see and comment on them. It’s essentially Instagram for those who don’t want to wade through the endless less-than-amateur scenic photography and photographs of “cute” dogs and cats to find the exact fashion stills they’re after.

HD100 HELMET BY HELMET DAWG If it wasn’t for word count, this product could be perfectly described with one sentence. Who doesn’t want to look like Batman? However, with a quota in mind, I will venture to explain why the answer to this question is “nobody”. This item is not so much a fashion piece as a life necessity. The Dark Knight may well truly be the coolest character, nay the coolest man, on earth, and thus every single opportunity to look or act like him should be snapped at. Regardless of what your wife/husband says, no matter what logical argument they throw at you when you’re considering buying this, you must disregard all of them and only think of yourself fully kitted in black (cape optional) speeding along a long road, imagining the Joker willing you to “HIT ME”. Some may argue that it is not the most fashionable item in this list, or even in the world, but I say what is fashion if it’s not making a fool of yourself? Think of those poor models walking down the catwalk in what can only be described as a torture from the Saw franchise, and in comparison how silly will you really look in a helmet with ears? Turn up to one of those events in this helmet and you’ll be branded plain and ordinary, and so there is really no excuse here, apart from the ludicrous price tag £200.

SILIC HYDROPHOBIC T-SHIRT Stains. Not Ali G’s home town, but the curse and nightmare of everyone wearing a relatively expensive garment. The moment red wine comes out at a dinner, there’s a visible grimace that moves around the table as people imagine great red blemishes tarnishing their perfect, crisp shirts. Fear not, the SILIC Hydrophobic Shirt is now here to abolish these pesky stains once and for all. As the name suggests, the material these t-shirts are made repels water, and most other liquid substances, meaning that, much like a shield, your shirt protects you and itself from any oncoming danger (that is a liquid). In the words of the creators themselves, “it’s pretty rad”. For those of a scientific bent among us, The SILIC Shirt achieved its hydrophobic properties through the use of billions of silica particles bonded directly to the fibers on a microscopic level, creating a layer of air that serves as a barrier to prevent liquids from coming in.

HTC One M8 - Design for Life The designers at HTC have excelled themselves with the HTC One M8. It’s 90% brushed aluminium finish creates a superb sense of quality when you first pick up the phone, its solid feel and curved back are designed perfectly for your hand, adding a truly tactile element to a beautiful phone. The HTC One M8 definitely makes a statement and that’s before you’ve even turned on the dual front-facing BoomSound speakers! Aside from the incredible look and feel of the One M8, HTC have revisited the HTC One and looked at every opportunity to make it better. As far as premium phones go, it will be hard for competitors to follow the standards set by the One M8, so early in 2014.

The other stand out feature is the Ultrapixel Duo Camera. Not only does it take great shots but the second lens you see on the back is a depth sensor that takes depth information and integrates it directly into the picture. Why is this important? It enables you to adjust the focus after the photo has been taken, so you can be sure that you’ll always focus on the subject, giving you great photos that are perfect for sharing. The HTC One M8 has to be seen to be believed. Pop into one of the Sure stores in Douglas, Ramsey or Port Erin, where you can get it for £99 on the Smart Ultimate plan (£46 per month).

Perhaps one of the key issues with the HTC One, in all its guises, was the relatively poor battery life. The One M8 changes this. Using the efficiency of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor along with a 2600mAh battery (the HTC One used a 2300mAh), HTC have made huge improvements in the power pack, meaning that you charge it less often and can relax when you are out and about. The Snapdragon processor also improves on previous models. Running Android 4.4 KitKat, the phone’s engine runs far more quickly, enabling easy viewing of data heavy files and apps whilst making general use much faster and very enjoyable. The HTC One M8 is purposefully a large phone built to accommodate a 5 inch screen and two BoomSound speakers. Together they give extraordinary video playback with crystal clear images backed up by truly incredible sound, all from a device that fits in your pocket.

Sony Xperia Z2 As you would expect from a company that is involved in TV’s, music, cameras and laptops Sony brings you a multimedia masterpiece with their latest smartphone offering. Without wasting anymore time, lets get straight to one of the biggest selling points of the new Sony Xperia Z2 – the camera. The camera in the Xperia Z2 is a whopping 20.7 megapixels! To put that into perspective, that is more megapixels than a LOT of digital cameras on the market right now. Now, as we have mentioned here before, megapixels aren’t everything when it comes to cameras but the great thing about the Xperia Z2 is that it backs this up with an array of additional great features such as Sony’s awardwinning G Lens. This is a 27 mm wide angle lens with bright F2.0 which, to you and me, means that it allows the lens to capture more light in dark conditions. The Z2 also includes an image sensor which decreases noise to ensure smooth, clear pictures and an image-processing system which employs powerful algorithms to ensure vibrant realism in every shot. That’s not all! The camera also has Motion Detector which automatically chooses a higher shutter speed to capture blurfree images when your photo subject is moving.

Finally, the Sony Xperia Z2 camera also contains 3x Clear Image Zoom to help keep those distance shots looking as clear as if they were right in front of you. All this technology isn’t just limited to static images either, the video function of the Xperia Z2 follows suit with its 4K recording ability. For those of you who don’t know, 4K is four times the detail compared to Full HD 1080p image quality, your footage is delivered in Ultra High Definition (3840 x 2160). The Sony Xperia Z2 also has SteadyShot™ which compensates for your movements to produce a more stable and smooth video. Jealous of the iPhone 5s’ ability to take slow-mo footage? Well the Xperia Z2 allows you to capture footage and then afterwards select the elements of footage that you want to slow down and slow it down to quarter speed. Built with a one-piece aluminium frame with glass panels the Sony Xperia Z2 is also both waterproof and dust resistant. CANNY CROWS

Crows have the reasoning ability of a seven-year-old child, new research suggests. Scientists challenged New Caledonian crows with a study in which the crows had to work out how to get floating food rewards by dropping objects into water-filled tubes. Researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand say the bird’s understanding of the task matched that of human children aged five to seven. Sarah Jelbert, lead researcher, said: “These results are striking as they highlight both the strengths and limits of the crows’ understanding.”In particular, the crows all failed a task which violated normal causal rules, but they could pass the other tasks, which suggests they were using some level of causal understanding when they were successful.”

TAXI SERVICE WITH A TWIST

When deciding what get-away car to use, a robber had a brainwave. Getting a taxi to wait for him outside a bank in Edinburgh while he nipped inside to hold it up, he promptly managed to escape in the cab with thousands of pounds stuffed in a Tesco bag. Police said no weapon was used in the raid on a branch of RBS in the city and that the driver was completely oblivious that he was the getaway car! Detective Inspector Rory Hamilton said: “It would not be unusual for a taxi to be asked to wait outside a bank.”But we now need the driver to get in touch with us.” A group of cats is called a clowder....

THINK BEFORE YOU ACT?

Firefighters have rescued a 16-year-old girl who became stuck in a storm drain while trying to retrieve her mobile phone. Ella Birchenough tried to pull herself out of the hole in Dover, Kent, but panicked when she became wedged. Tim Richards saw Ms Birchenough stuck up to her waist while he was driving home from work and pulled over to help. “It’s not the type of thing you see every day. It was pretty weird,” he said. “She was more concerned about getting her phone back rather than getting herself out of the drain. Recounting her ordeal, Ms Birchenough said: “I was talking to somebody and I went to put my phone in my pocket and it fell down the drain. “I thought to myself, ‘I’m not leaving this’ and I jumped down to get it. When they pulled me out I ran straight home and jumped in the bath. I think it was just water but I wasn’t taking any chances.”

THE PERKS OF THE JOB

If you thought you hated your job, this guy took it to another level…. Stenographer Daniel Kochanski of New York is accused of ignoring trial details and instead chose to repeatedly type "I hate my job". Consequently, Mr Kochanski was promptly arrested, fired and now at least ten convictions could be overturned.US media have compared his meltdown to film The Shining in which Jack Nicholson's character repeatedly types 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'. Asource told the New York Times, "He hit random keys or wrote, "I hate my job. I hate my job", over and over." Mr Kochanski, 43, told the New York Post: "I never typed gibberish. I always did my job 100 per cent. "I was let go because of substance abuse. I'm in recovery. July will be one year I'm clean."
