edito Gardens – the real truth
D
id you know that your garden can say a lot about you? It’s true; people can tell exactly how lazy/carefree/hardworking/uptight/people-pleasing/ perfectionist you are by a single glance at your lawn. One small statement about the state of your bulbs can literally stop a friendship dead in its tracks as your acquaintances realise exactly who you are at that moment. Too much chat about growing kale or mucky potatoes can strike horror into the hearts of many and bolster insecurity as they purvey their own dearth of “outdoor space” as it’s called nowadays. You have to tread carefully lest you be summed up with a tut as a “leaf blower” or a “gnome sort of person” or the type of individual who uses fake grass or too many wind chimes or trendy railway sleepers or hanging baskets or jet washers or egg basket chairs, or numerous fairy lights. So, know this; your garden is the window to your soul not your kitchen. Whatever gardening habits, or lack of them that you possess, you will be judged! Obviously, you would never do the judging because, really, who actually cares about someone else’s lawn stripes or wisteria. If you do, however, care about lawn strips then you’ve probably come to the wrong magazine and you should put this down immediately. We really don’t mind how your garden grows. We will still like you if yours is more jungle than manicured, if you prefer a beer garden than a flower garden. We don’t even mind if you waffle on about sweet pea or bore us to death about your organic radishes, we promise we won’t eye roll when you wax lyrical about your wormery, or your home made planters, which were inspired by the High Line in New York. We welcome all sorts of gardens here at Gallery so just relax, take your foot off the mower pedal and chill. It’s all good. If you do have a day off from annoying your neighbours with your incessant hedge trimming then you might want to pop along to the “Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 International Road Races” from 8-11 July or alternatively you could hit up the Glen Maye Craft Market on 6 July and get something special for your garden, probably. CHRIS PACKHAM – PICTURES FROM THE EDGE OF THE WORLD
//GAIETY THEATRE, DOUGLAS// The TV presenter, naturalist, conservationist, award-winning photographer and author Chris Packham’s new show is designed for impact. In his photographs, as in life, Chris champions the underdog and pushes back at familiarity breeding contempt - for him humble everyday creatures are just as alluring and when he travels to some of the world’s wildlife hotspots he wants to see them in a new way, to put some art into his photos. At the core of all his work is conservation so expect tales from the frontline and the full frontal truth about how we get it wrong and get it right. It’s not a lecture, it’s a romp through the wild mind of Chris Packham.

APPS TO HELP FIX YOUR PHONE ADDICTION ONCE AND FOR ALL If willpower alone isn’t cutting it, these nifty downloads will deal with those distracting icons and notifications for you. By Liz Connor.
How many times a day do you idly pick up your phone and start scrolling? Whether you’re committed to dozens of WhatsApp group chats, can’t stop checking Instagram, or couldn’t possibly get through 24 hours without checking Donald Trump’s latest tirade on Twitter you’re certainly not alone. The average Brit checks their phone every 12 minutes, according to Ofcom, while new research from Google UK suggests 79% of Brits want to find a better balance with their smartphone usage. It seems more and more of us are cottoning on to the damaging effects of being too smartphone dependent - and app developers are responding, with tech that can monitor and help limit usage. Need some of this in your life? Here are six apps designed to help slash the amount of time you waste staring into the palm of your hand...
8
1
Forest (forestapp.cc) Getting into a state of hyper-focus isn’t always easy, but if deadlines won’t force you to put down your phone, being responsible for the destruction of a virtual forest might just do it. This quirky app is specifically designed to keep you productive. You set a timer for up to two hours at a time, and the app plants a digital seed into the ground when you’re ready to knuckle down to some hard graft. In the time that your phone is left untouched, the seed grows into a lush leafy tree - a visual representation of your phone-free progress. If you leave the app to answer a text though, your trees will wither away and die, forcing you to start all over again. Trust us, it’s not a pretty sight. There’s also a library of relaxing music and natural sounds.
2
Flipd (flipdapp.co) We all know the easiest way to stay focused is to remove distractions, but sometimes turning your phone face-down isn’t enough to stop you from getting tempted to touch it. That’s where Flipd comes in. It essentially locks down your phone for timed periods, so you physically can’t access apps like Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. The ‘Full Lock’ feature hides all of these apps, plus news, online games and emails, while the timer is in place. Basic features like incoming calls, text messages, the weather and calculator functions are still accessible, so you can still reach people if it’s totally necessary. The app also records all of your phone-free time so you can keep a check on your daily, weekly and monthly stats. ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE
FEATURE

3
Mute (justmuteit.com) If a bit of a friendly competition is the best way to keep you accountable, this app is the download for you. There’s a feature that allows you to go head-to-head with your mates in a timed digital detox. As well as gamifying your smartphone usage, Mute also records your pick-ups and time browsing, helping you better understand your weaknesses and where your time is going. Another nice feature: It sends motivational notifications to your lock screen about your progress, so you can track your daily time offline without having to unlock your phone.
4
Space (findyourphonelifebalance.com) Space is a beautifully designed ‘personalised behaviour change programme’ that lays bare the ugly truth of your smartphone addiction. The app tracks how long you spend on your phone, helping you move forward by setting daily goals and comparing your behaviour with friends and family. The clean and simple format’s designed to coach you through smartphone addiction, without adding any extra digital clutter into your life. For instance, there are no ads and it provides users with just one tip per day to educate and inspire. The developers also purposefully limited the number of people you can invite to track to four, as they believe habits are broken in small mindful groups. The basic app is free but you can pay extra for more features, like an eightday course on breaking digital habits. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Siempo (getsiempo.com) Siempo gives your phone a zen makeover, simplifying the design so it doesn’t constantly demand your attention. The first thing it does is rip out your old homescreen and turn it into a relaxing interface. You won’t see dozens of badged icons anymore, but one clear and calming picture of a mountainous vista instead. You can also add a personalised motivational message or mantra that appears every time you unlock the phone. The best thing about Siempo though is its alert handling. Instead of letting apps bombard and overwhelm you with notifications in real-time, it lets you batch the alerts so they come through in timed stages instead. You can opt for every half hour, once an hour, or even just once a day. When you do want to access a menu of apps, it’s strips them back to simple greyscale icons without any of the red ‘read me’ notifications that encourage mindless checking. Android-only Siempo is currently in beta-testing stage so it’s free to download from Google Play.
6
Steplock (play.google.com) The NHS says we should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week - but plenty of people fail to hit to hit this target and digital distractions don’t help. If you spend a lot of time scrolling while sedentary on the sofa, this Android-only app is a good incentive to get moving. It marries together two common areas of selfimprovement: Decreasing screen time and upping daily activity. You simply plug in a list of apps that are most likely to hoover up your time, and your phone won’t let you access them until you’ve reached a specific number of steps per day. The free version allows you to lock yourself out of two apps, but if you pay for an upgraded you can add in more. That early evening Instagram scroll will never feel so well deserved...

Hamlet Ten-year-old Hamlet’s life has, sadly, mirrored his tragic namesake’s recently and he must be wondering why he wasn’t called a ‘happier’, albeit less original, name – Garfield maybe, or Tango? Having spent years as a much-loved family pet, Hamlet’s family emigrated to Australia and had to leave him behind. We don’t think he’ll be in our cattery for long, though, because he’s such a sweet cat and a real people-pleaser. He particularly likes his belly to be tickled and doesn’t care how much dignity he loses in the process. He’s also good with children and dogs – he really is the purrfect cat! Interestingly, some people claim that ginger cats are friendlier and more approachable than any other colour.

We always rehome dogs thinking that they are going to their ‘forever homes’, but sometimes this is not the case. Poor Amber, the Egyptian Pharaoh Hound, has returned to our kennels after spending more than six months in her new home. She suffers from separation anxiety and she had lost a lot of weight (which, happily, she’s now regaining), and so we are looking for new owners who can spend as much time as possible with her and enable her to be the constant companion that she so obviously needs to be.
Amber
She has a strong prey-drive, as befits her breed (Pharaoh Hounds are the national dog of Malta, where they are used for hunting), and so she can’t be rehomed with cats or rabbits. She is incredibly affectionate with people, and simply needs someone to return the love she gives. ManxSPCA • Ard Jerkyll, East Foxdale • Tel: 851672

CULTURE
From a small start in Ramsey in 1978, Yn Chruinnaght (‘The Gathering’ in Manx Gaelic) has come on in leaps and bounds. From its beginnings as a Manx national festival, revived by one of the leading figures in Manx traditional cultural affairs, Mona Douglas, it’s now one of the longestrunning Celtic Festivals in Europe – an annual celebration of music, dance and culture which I’m sure would make Mona proud. So where will you get your Celtic fix? The big events are in Peel – Welsh Celtic supergroup Mabon(just back from touring Australia) open the festival at the Centenary Centre on Wednesday 17 July, with the help of Manx music legends The Mollag Band– a chance to see them before they leave to represent the Island at this year’s Festival Interceltique de Lorient in August. The following night, at the same venue Scottish harpist (and Culture Vannin’s harp teacher) Rachel Hairwill be joined by guitarist Ron Jappy, promoting their new album ‘Sparks’.
live background music during food and folk sessions all week, and the Whitehouse in Peel for accommodating the more lively after-concert sessions that trad musicians and audiences love!”

Val Caine (Mabon and Mera Royle)
And if one harpist isn’t enough, Friday night sees an exciting Manx-Breton collaboration between BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Musician of the Year 2018, Ramsey’s very own harpist Mera Roylewith well-known composer and keyboard/ fiddle player David Kilgallonand two charismatic performers from Brittany, singer Lors Landatand accordionist Thomas Moisson. Chloe Woolley, one of the organisers of the event says that this promises to be unmissable: “David has been over in Brittany working with these two performers to put together an evening of new and traditional music which celebrates the firm friendship between the two nations. I’m really excited to find out what they’ve got in store for us!” Headlining the final concert at the Peel Centenary Centre on Saturday is Irish singer and bouzouki player Daoiri Farrell, accompanied by bodhran player Robbie Walshand uillean piper Michael O’Connell. “Daoiri has been described as one of the most important singers to come out of Ireland for many years” says Chloe, “and we’re really grateful to Culture Ireland for its support for this event, which we’re sure will be a sell-out. Daoiri has several BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards behind him, and we’re delighted to have this opportunity to bring his rich vocals and charming style to the attention of music lovers in the Isle of
And if you’re just itching to take part yourself, ceilis, workshops and sessions will be taking place during the festival with visiting performers from Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall and even as far away as Kentucky, USA joining our own Manx musicians and bands. “There isn’t enough space here to mention everyone,” laughs Chloe, “but we’re delighted to welcome back the Davey Family from Cornwall who’ve been supporting our festival since the early days and you can catch them at the interCeltic ceilis on Friday and Saturday at the Peel Masonic Hall. New to the Island are Appalachian banjo player Randy Wilson and his son, old-time fiddle player Gabe Dansereau, who will be performing and also telling stories about Appalachian music and dance and its connections with Celtic world in the annual Ian O’Leary lecture on Thursday evening.” But if you just want to dip a toe into the Celtic celebrations, Peel Cathedral, its grounds and Corrin Hall will be the hub for free, family-friendly, community events in the afternoon of Saturday 20thJuly, including acoustic recitals, dance displays, refreshments and an Artisan Craft Fair. Then on Sunday the House of Manannan will host outdoor displays of music and dance plus Celtic language workshops – again with opportunities to take part.
Man.” Providing support for Daoiri is the Peddyr Cubberley Trad Trio– Manx music favourites flautist Peddyr Cubberley, Malcolm Stitt(guitar) and Russell Cowin(bodhran). But it’s not just these big concerts and big names: informal music sessions are an integral part of the Celtic Gathering. “It’s great to bring Celtic music to those who might not otherwise hear it,” Chloe says, “so we’re really grateful to venues like Noa Bakehouse in Douglas, which is featuring
“If you’re even the slightest bit interested in Celtic culture, music or language then you should come the 2019 Celtic Gathering,”
says Chloe.
“It’s our 41styear and the programme is stronger than ever, with some really big names, exclusive performances of new music and the family-friendly atmosphere we’re known for. Many of the participants and performers will be heading for the Festival Interceltique in Lorient next month, so this is your opportunity to say you heard them here first!”
For the full schedule of events, more details about the performers, or to buy tickets for individual concerts or ceillis go to www.celticgathering.im where you can also buy an exclusive online-only full festival pass. ART GALLERY GLADWELL AND PATTERSON ISLAND EXHIBITION On 17th June Capital International Group had the pleasure of welcoming internationally renowned art gallery Gladwell and Patterson to the island. The exhibition took place in the wonderful surroundings of the Nunnery Estate with distinguished guests invited to enjoy a fine array of oil paintings, watercolours and sculptures. Owner of the London based gallery, Antony Fuller, once said “Nothing gives me more pleasure than a great picture”, a sentiment guests of the event could relate to as they browsed pieces of the highest quality and condition. In its 263 year history, Gladwell and Patterson has established a reputation for discovering the works of future masters and the Nunnery exhibition certainly didn’t disappoint, with ‘Three African Gentlemen’ by David Shepherd, as well as Pablo Picasso’s ‘Paysage

Upon arrival guests were greeted by Capital International’s Founder, Peter Long, a long-standing friend of the Gallery’s. Later in the evening Peter regaled guests with the story of how he came to purchase his first painting from the Gallery in 1967. After his initial bid of £500 was rejected, the then stockbroker paid 560 guineas for ‘Gleams of Light, Loch Lomond’ by Alfred de Breanski and even had the 52 year old receipt in his pocket as proof! As well as the exhibition, guests were also able to enjoy a selection of locally produced gins provided by the Fynoderee distillery’s pop-up bar. Local Harpist, Aalin Wilson, also attended, performing pieces from her varied and relaxing repertoire. The exhibition was opened to the public the next day and following its success, was extended to a third day with Gladwell and Patterson eager to return next year with a much larger exhibition planned. F
ive leading small business owners helped to inspire the next generation of ‘micro business’ entrepreneurs at a recent networking and panel event hosted by the Isle of Man Business Network, in partnership with the Department for Enterprise (DfE). Establishing your own business can be extremely rewarding, but also incredibly challenging. Kim Graziano (Kim Gee Studio), Claire Christian (Claire Christian Couture), Mark Noble (The Noble Suitor), Andy Skillen (A Creative Designer) and Glyn Edge (Snaefell Soaps) are all graduates of the DfE’s Micro Business Grant Scheme (MBGS) and spoke very candidly about their successes – as well as their struggles – to more than 90 guests. Each of the panelists, in their own right, are fantastic ambassadors for the Isle of Man and its flourishing entrepreneurial economy. The MBGS aims to support new businesses or individuals by offering training, financial assistance and mentoring to help them get established. In the last two financial years, it’s supported the training of nearly 300 individuals and the creation of 159 new businesses. The event was moderated by local Marketing Communications expert, Michael Josem, who commented: “Small businesses are the engine room of the Isle of Man community, not just economically, but socially and emotionally. The five small business founders spoke powerfully about their journey, giving a valuable insight to their world. They lifted the lid not just on the challenges of managing revenue, margin, and cash flow but, more importantly, on the emotional and personal challenges that come from starting your own business.”

THE GARDEN OF FRANCE THE LOIRE VALLEY, A REGION SO LOVED BY FRENCH ROYALTY AND NOBILITY THAT THEY BUILT DOZENS OF CHATEAUX WITH BEAUTIFUL GARDENS AND TERRACES ACROSS THE REGION, EARNING IT THE TITLE “THE GARDEN OF FRANCE”. FROM THE MAGNIFICENT CHATEAU CHAMBORD IN THE EAST, TO CHATEAU D’ANGERS IN THE WEST, THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL IN THE WORKS AT 80 DIFFERENT SITES.
It is a beautiful, diverse and exciting region producing France’s third largest volume of wine (after Bordeaux and Rhone) and the greatest variety of wine styles. Inland, the Upper Loire boasts Sauvignon Blanc for white wines and Pinot Noir for reds and rosés, towards the coast the prevalent varieties are Melon de Bourgogne (the Muscadet grape) and Folle Blanche (formerly used for brandy production), in the middle Loire Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc are the hero grapes of the most successful sites and in the vast hectares of vineyards planted around these sites diversity shines in the forms of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Gamay, Meunier, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and even more Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.
Among some, there is a slight fear that the Loire may potentially lose its traditional identity to these more international grape varieties and speculation is that more ancient varieties may be resurrected in the region in order to preserve it. The vineyards of the Loire represent the north western limit of vine cultivation

in Europe (besides England) and its geography makes it a region of varied climates. The east experiences a cool, continental climate whilst the west is warmed by the Gulf Stream. Consequently, the region is weather and vintage dependent; too cool a summer and the grapes won’t fully ripen, too warm and the grapes are flabby and unbalanced (although hotter years produce superb sweet wines). Spring frost can be a serious issue with up to 90% of the crop being destroyed in the worst years. As is to be expected, the Garden of France is a great example of the French concept of “terroir”, where everything about where the wine comes from supersedes the grape itself. This is why wines such as Sancerre command higher price-tags; you can buy Sauvignon Blanc from all over the world but you can only buy Sancerre from one place. As demand increases the land cannot grow in size, so market forces intervene and the price naturally rises. Enjoying the same sense of place, equally delicious and arguably providing greater value are Pouilly-Fumé (named for the smoky gunflint character and which, since the 1980s, is often fermented or matured in oak to temper the acidity and give complexity to the wines) and Touraine. Unbeknownst to many, Sancerre also comes in red and rosé varieties thanks to the Pinot Noir grape whilst Pouilly-Fumé is exclusively a white appellation.
Here at The Wine Cellar we have an excellent selection of wines from The Loire, just a few being – Domaine Beausejour “Les Grenettes” Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, smelling like a summer’s day; bursting with guava, white flowers, grapefruit, orange peel, lime zest, green apple and fresh-cut grass aromas and flavours. Pouilly-Fumé “La Renardière” from Domaine BouchiéChatellier, a Sauvignon Blanc in a league of its own, bursting with gooseberry, citrus, blackcurrant and apricot flavours. These wines are a superb example of “what grows together goes together” foodmatching; essentially wherever Sauvignon Blanc grapes are grown, goats are farmed and their cheese complements the wine superbly. Domaine Langlois Chateau Muscadet de Sevre & Maine sur lie. Muscadet’s modern incarnation is known as “sur lie” which means the yeast has been stirred back up into the wine once it has settled. This not only gives complexity but also a creamy texture to the
wine which makes it much more palatable. This style is renowned for matching to seafood. Domaine du Pré Semelé Sancerre Rosé can often compare favourably to the more en vogue Provence style as the fruit profile is more generous but the dryness is still there. Think raspberries, melon and redcurrants - befitting of only the finest summer’s days. And lastly, the Sancerre Rouge. Our Pascal Jolivet Sancerre rouge is jewel-coloured with delicate aromas of red fruit. It is elegant with subtle spicy flavours and a meaty savouriness. A perfect food and wine match has to be Sancerre Rouge with pâté although also beautiful with duck, pork and charcuterie. Whatever your taste we have a hidden gem waiting for you in our Loire section. Why not ask our great team to recommend something to you for that perfect food pairing or to challenge your tastebuds. Vive le jardin de France!

Recipes HOW TO MAKE RACHEL AMA’S VEGAN AFRICAN PEANUT STEW A CLASSIC WITH A PLANT-BASED TWIST.
“My mum spent many summers in Sierra Leone, where her dad comes from, and this peanut stew was one of her favourite dishes,” explains plant-based food blogger Rachel Ama. “She usually had it with chicken, but when I made this plant-based version for her to try, she had the biggest smile on her face.
“This recipe is a definite winner in our house, perfect for when you want a really hearty and comforting dinner with a nice touch of spice to set your taste buds tingling. My favourite way to eat this is with plantains and coleslaw.” Ingredients: n 1-2tbsp peanut oil n 500g sweet potatoes, peeled and diced n 1 x 400g tin of black-eyed peas, drained and rinsed n 1/2 fresh red Scotch bonnet chilli, deseeded and kept whole (optional) n 3tbsp tomato puree n 1 x 400g tin of chopped tomatoes n 500ml vegetable stock n 125g natural smooth peanut butter n 200g spinach, chopped n 1tbsp fresh lemon juice n Handful of fresh coriander, roughly chopped n 2 spring onions, finely chopped n 1 fresh red chilli, deseeded and finely sliced n Salt and black pepper For the paste: n 2 onions, roughly chopped n 5 garlic cloves, roughly chopped n Thumb-sized piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and roughly chopped n 1tsp paprika n 2tsp ground coriander n 1tsp ground turmeric n 2tsp ground cumin n 1tsp ground fenugreek n 1/2-1 fresh red Scotch bonnet chilli (to taste), deseeded and roughly chopped n Pinch of salt Method: 1. Place all the paste ingredients in a food processor and blitz into a coarse paste. 2. Heat one tablespoon of the peanut oil in a large, heavybased saucepan or shallow frying pan. Add the paste and saute over a medium-low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding a little more oil if the paste starts to stick to the pan. 3. Add the sweet potatoes, black-eyed peas, Scotch bonnet chilli (if using - see introduction) and tomato puree and mix to combine. Pour in the tinned tomatoes and vegetable stock, add the peanut butter, season with salt and pepper and stir in well. Cover the pan with a lid and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Remove from the heat and stir in the spinach, leaving it to wilt in the pan for five minutes. To finish, add the lemon juice, coriander, spring onions and sliced chillies and check the seasoning, adding more salt and pepper if needed.

Ingredients: (Serves 4) n 1 ripe pineapple n 2tbsp maple syrup n 1tbsp ground cinnamon n 1tbsp vegetable oil n For the salted caramel sauce: n 240ml maple syrup n 2tbsp vegan butter n 60ml vegan cream n 1-2 pinches of salt (to taste) To serve: n 125g pecans, lightly crushed n 4 scoops of vegan coconut ice cream
HOW TO MAKE RACHEL AMA’S GRIDDLED CINNAMON PINEAPPLES WITH SALTED CARAMEL
“Here, juicy pineapples are marinated in maple and cinnamon and then griddled until caramelised, before being drizzled with salted caramel sauce and crunchy pecans and served with coconut ice cream,” says food writer and blogger Rachel Ama. “The pineapples are also amazing cooked on the barbecue in the summer.”
Method: 1. First make the salted caramel sauce. Pour the maple syrup into a non-stick saucepan set over a medium heat and bring to a gentle boil, then allow the syrup to bubble away for about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon to reduce the bubbles. 2. Add the butter and stir until it has completely melted. Whisking the sauce constantly, gradually add the cream until it has all been combined. Add the salt and mix in well, then pour the sauce into a jar or bowl and set aside to cool. 3. Meanwhile, place the pineapple on a chopping board on its side and, using a large sharp knife, slice off the base of the fruit and the green top cutting through the pineapple 1-2cm from the base of the leaves. Stand the pineapple up and begin to carefully slice away the outer peel, cutting from top to bottom and following the contours of the pineapple. Lay the pineapple on its side and cut into 5cm slices. 4. Place the pineapple in a large bowl, then add the maple syrup and cinnamon and stir to coat the pineapple evenly. Leave to marinate for about 30 minutes. 5. Place a griddle pan (or a heavy-based frying pan) over a medium heat and add the vegetable oil. Add the pineapple slices and cook for about five minutes on each side or until heated through and lightly chargrilled. Divide the griddled pineapples between plates and serve with a generous scoop of coconut ice cream, a drizzle of the salted caramel sauce and a sprinkling of crushed pecans. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

The lake sits on the edge of the Kerry International Dark-Sky Reserve - a status granted to areas that possess ‘exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and nocturnal environment’, with strict rules in place to keep them that way. It’s the only International Dark-Sky Reserve in Ireland and one of just three in the world with a Gold Tier ranking. In short, we could be in for some bad-ass astronomical displays. Mother Nature has other ideas tonight though; there’s thick cloud. Still, stars or no stars, late-night SUP is thrilling, and after squeezing into a wetsuit by torchlight, I clamber onto my board and start tentatively paddling.
Soon, my six travel buddies melt into the darkness. It’s silent but for the rhythmic ‘plaps’ of paddles on water and bats flapping a few feet overhead.

TRAVEL
Then, the clouds begin to crack. Moonlight filters through, bathing the lake in the softest, silvery glow. It’s sheer magic. And for a moment, nothing else exists. I’m in Ireland tackling The Big Five - a brand new series of active challenges that’s just launched in the Reeks District in County Kerry on the south-west coast, known as the country’s ‘adventure playground’. Dubbed ‘Ireland’s ultimate bucket list’, the challenges combine fitness, mindfulness and, most of all, immersing in the Reeks District’s stunning landscapes. As well as the night SUP, there’s summiting Carrauntoohil (Ireland’s highest peak at 1,039m); kayaking 6km across Caragh Lake; surfing at Inch Beach; and cycling 90km of the Ring of Kerry. You pick up a Big Five passport from the Reeks District Visitor Centre in Killorglin, which gets stamped each time you complete a challenge. Do all five in five days and you earn a place on the Big Five Wall of Fame - or spread the challenges across 12 months and multiple visits, using the tracking app, Komoot. Me and my six companions are tackling all five in just three days - and we’re the first people to do so. Reeks District have partnered with local providers, who can kit you out with BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
equipment and guides, and their website has all the info needed to get planning. You can book individual activities directly, or official partner, Hidden Ireland, can help tailor bespoke packages, with various accommodation options to suit all budgets. Our base is Kingstons Townhouse in the centre of Killorglin, a half-hour drive from Kerry Airport. Recently refurbished, Kingstons has the style and comfort of a boutique hotel, alongside the friendly home-from-home feel of a family business. And there’s an adjoining pub, where guests
can enjoy a hearty breakfast by morning and join locals for a bevvy or two by night. We’ve got to earn our Guinness though - and the first challenge on our list is Carrauntoohil. There are several routes up. We’re taking Devil’s Ladder - the most direct but also one of the steepest, although there’s a long steady hike to reach it. Our guide, Piaras Kelly from Kerry Climbing, says with good fitness levels, it should be possible to get up and down in seven hours.

Mountaineering experience isn’t essential, but it’s a fair slog and some routes involve scrambling. Piaras doesn’t just help keep us safe and on track; he’s a font of knowledge too. Whether it’s the quality of his tales on local history and the mountain’s geology and wildlife, or the crackerjack passion he tells them with, time races by. The final stretch to the summit is open to the elements, and a chilly headwind forces us to crank those effort levels up a notch. There’s a reward in store though. The summit is often covered in cloud, but today the views are spectacular. Vibrant green peaks and valleys dotted with glimmering lakes stretch into the distance towards the

Wild Atlantic Way - the rugged coastal trail that circles Reeks’ westerly edges. Back at Kingstons after our descent, I recharge with a quick glass of Dingle, the local whiskey, and soothe my legs in the sauna, before heading for a seafood dinner at Carrig Country House Hotel - one of the area’s scenic lakeside restaurants.
The next day, it’s on to challenge two; surfing. Ireland isn’t well known for the sport, but this doesn’t mean it hasn’t got great
beaches. Inch, for example, is a vast stretch of glorious golden sand. But it does mean bonus - less crowds. To complete this challenge, you don’t have to be a super surfer - so long as you catch some waves. Tim Alcutt from Kingdom Waves gives us a lesson on the sand, before we brave the choppy Atlantic to channel our inner surfer dudes. I spend most of the time tumbling off the board and battling to get back on. It’s utterly exhausting - and insanely fun. Afterwards, my mouth tingles from saltwater and I’m buzzing from head to toe.

ride towards Moll’s Gap, where the landscape begins to open out and things start to feel even more wild and remote. You’ll want to keep something in the tank for the third and final proper hill - the Gap of Dunloe really is a climb. And, if the cycling doesn’t entirely take your breath away, the stunning views will.
Next, it’s on to Caragh Lake for our kayak challenge with Cappanalea Public. I’m tired, and the prospect of paddling 6km is daunting. That quickly disappears though. Enda Prendergast, our guide, has that super-chill aura of someone who simply loves life, and it’s not hard to see why...
Three days, five stamps, and my name is one of the first up on The Big Five Wall of Fame. They call it Ireland’s ultimate bucket list. But I’m not sure you’ll just want to tick them off and be done with it. Reeks District might just pull you back for more.
Caragh is a huge basin of tranquillity, trimmed by trees and rhododendronscattered hills. Yes, we’re working up a sweat, but as we paddle further and further from shore, and raindrops begin dancing across the water’s surface, I can’t remember the last time I felt so relaxed. The moonlight SUP follows, then there’s just one challenge left: Cycling the Ring of Kerry with Jay Scully and Leif Winchester from Trailflow Biking Adventures, who can kit groups out with a support vehicle and bikes as required. Thankfully, we have a whole day for this one. At 90km with three hefty hills (the route snakes round Ireland’s three highest mountains), you could say we’ve saved the toughest challenge for last. By now though, I’m wholly aware The Big Five is as much about the scenery and spirit of the land and its people, as the activities themselves - something you really need when you’re feeling the burn after hours in the saddle. And the Ring of the Reeks really delivers. Ballaghbeama Gap, the first ‘big’ hill, twists and turns with tight hairpin bends, edged by steep craggy verges. It’s dramatic and exciting - I even spot wild mountain goats and puts those quads through their paces.

The RL360 Superstock race finally went ahead on the Thursday of race week as part of a packed programme of racing, with Peter Hickman taking the win for the second year in a row.
