wonder what George Orwell would think if we played him ‘Acceptable in the 80s’ by Calvin Harris. The decade that was predicted to bring gloom, dystopia and Big Brother watching over all of us (not just wannabe D list celebrities in a dodgy house) instead brought neon, spandex, yuppies and a culture about as far from Oceania and thought crime as possible. The reality now mocked for it’s retro faux pas, Orwell’s 1984 envisioned bleak and futile rebellion against tyranny and socialism. Instead we had rebellion manifested in fact by hair spray, shoulder pads and rampant capitalism in a world of exposed brick to a sound track of stone wash denim clad soft rock. Predicting the future CAN be tricky. You think they’d have learnt from the 1984 curse but no, 1984 saw the making of ‘2010’ - A film that predicted that 3 years ago we’d find aliens on Jupiter when, in reality, everyone was too busy playing Angry Birds. Hard to imagine in a time when Apple computers could only produce green text on a computer screen the size of an iPad mini. This month we take a two pronged approach to the vision and reality of 1984. A lot of readers will have been just starting school in 1984, some were yet to be been born. Scary.

The birth of the FIrst Ferrari timepiece could be nothing less than explosive: hence the Big Bang Ferrari.

I’ve watched the three Gs (Goonies, Gremlins and Ghostbusters) every six months since the day I learned to copy VHS tapes, and love them right down to their implausible plot holes and occasionally crude racial stereotyping.

80s culture The decade that keeps on giving

I was raised by hippies, so by the time I was old enough to think for myself I was thoroughly bored of hearing about the sixties. Aside from the fact that ‘free love’ is the last thing you want to hear your parents talking about, to a child born in 1979 the sixties sounded both distant and a bit crap, like Portsmouth. I don’t have kids, but when I look around I see a lot of tiny brains who can’t wait to learn to speak just so they can tell their parents to shut up about the eighties. There are some decades that nobody gets nostalgic about, like the 1940s, unless you like the idea of dressing entirely in brown and rebuilding Europe from a pile of smoking rubble. We remember the 1980s as much more glamorous, and so there’s been periodic eighties revivals happening for longer than the eighties themselves actually existed. The eighties are so popular that I worry that by the time my generation are old enough to run the world, laws will be passed making all other decades

illegal. Maybe this came about because the children of the eighties have been blessed with an unprecedented expansion in the means of communication, giving us more opportunities to talk/blog/text about the things we half-remember from our VHS childhoods. The children of the 1940s grew up thinking that three TV channels was the height of technological achievement, so it was unlikely that the BBC would have ever themed Saturday night around a retrospective of The Goon Show, but by now there’s probably a digital TV channel up in the 300s that only runs documentaries about Boy George’s hats. David Hasselhof still has work, Garbage Pail Kids are going for crazy money on eBay and I’ve even seen a website devoted exclusively to writing about vintage crisps. The crisps thing is a good example of something slightly weird about all this, in that it’s impossible to be objective or even informative about something that hasn’t physically existed since you were ten. You can remember how Crispy Tubes made you feel, not how they really tasted. I watched those ‘I love the Eighties’ TV clipshows and am convinced that the minor celebs taking part hadn’t bothered to review most of the stuff they were wittering on about. Vernon Kaye does not care enough about his audience to actually spend time watching DangerMouse on Youtube, whereas I researched this article by travelling back in time on a Raleigh Chopper covered in LEDs and silver foil. Great Scott!

We were barely out of the 80s before people started getting teary-eyed about the TV of their childhoods, and since then there’s been a thriving industry selling Roland Rat bumbags and Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, to people who miss the days when Doctor Who had wobbly sets and there was nothing weird about Jimmy Savile introducing Gary Glitter on Top Of The Pops. Those were innocent times.

The blockbuster movies of the 1980s cast a long shadow, so much so that they are still being recycled three decades on, though even quadrupling the budget cannot capture the wooden-faced magic of Ahhhnold Schwarzenegger gurning against blue-screen explosions. If you revisit Predator you are soon aware that you could do a better job of the ‘predator camo’ SFX with iMovie, but the film remains outstanding despite these limitations. Perhaps it’s because the cast have done so many steroids that they think the Predator is real, or maybe it’s that they know they’re working in the golden age of the action blockbuster. Aliens, Die Hard, The Running Man, Indiana Jones; what they lacked in convincing bad guy accents they made up for with cheesy enthusiasm, snappy one-liners and copious supporting roles for Gary ‘tombstone teeth’ Busey.

At the time, many people expected eighties music to vanish in a synthesised puff of dry ice on the cusp of the 1990s. Oh, how wrong we were. From the overblown power ballad to the hyper-produced saccharine pop act, eighties music has out-lived many of its detractors, the sixties and seventies musos who were appalled by drum machines and records that didn’t contain enough single guitar solos. Eighties music is the ultimate artistic expression of the decade, combining a goofy love affair with the bleeps and bloops of new technology and an oddball approach to fashion preserved perfectly in its pioneering music videos, even if nobody has subsequently managed to look good in legwarmers or a ruffly shirt.

Most of the nostalgia tends to be directed towards cartoons, probably because few people have memories wooly enough that they remember Grange Hill as anything other than a grim, grey launchpad for people who’d end up wrestling a Mitchell in Eastenders. Sadly you’re in for a bit of a shock if you actually go back and watch Thundercats or Dogtanian in the age of Pixar. Whilst stop-motion stuff like The Wombles, Morph and Button Moon has retained a certain shonky charm, the likes of He Man has not aged well - you’ll find smoother animation on an advert for confused.com, but minus Skeletor’s camp magic. Noble exceptions are the unexpectedly gory Legendary Cities Of Gold and the animated Transformers movie, which has matured like a fine, robotic wine. The entire thing is on Youtube - you’re in for a treat.

The eighties was also the golden age of slasher and horror movies, the pop star vanity project (Purple Rain; Desperately Seeking Susan), and films with Eddie Murphy in them. Even films pitched towards families, teenagers and young children are an eighties goldmine. I’ve watched the three Gs (Goonies, Gremlins and Ghostbusters) every six months since the day I learned to copy VHS tapes, and love them right down to their implausible plot holes and occasionally crude racial stereotyping. I have friends that feel the same way about The Breakfast Club and Heathers, although if anybody is still rooting for The Lost Boys they’re too polite to tell me.

Eighties music is also incredibly diverse, from the brash explosion of hip hop, the urban rhythms of early house and techno to the drunken excesses of hair metal. Pub bores in Clash T shirts always go on about the influence of punk, but the sonic and lyrical experimentation of eighties post-punk artists like Talking Heads, New Order and The Smiths has had a far greater influence on today’s musicians than anything the Sex Pistols coughed up. The eighties was also the sunset era of the vinyl record and the cassette tape. Vinyl clings to life in the dusty cupboards of ageing DJs and dedicated audiophiles, whereas the humble C90 lives on only in spirit, the inspiration for a billion iTunes playlists and a generation of audio pirates raised on highspeed dubbing and Dolby Noise Reduction. Now that’s what I call music.

In the years that have passed since its publication, we’ve come to appreciate the prophetic nature of 1984 and many a dystopian novel and movie have followed in its footsteps, accurately predicting political, cultural or technological changes to the world we live in. So, has the nightmare world that Orwell predicted finally caught up with us? Take a look at some of these and decide for yourself…

CCTV / SURVEILLANCE – 1984 There’s a brilliantly illustrative (but sadly, doctored) photo doing the rounds online at the moment of George Orwell’s former home with its English Heritage blue plaque fixed to the wall, a few inches from which is a camera mounted to a post and a sign reading ’24 Hour CCTV in Operation.’ The photo may be a fake, but the reality isn’t so far detached from that, with a newspaper reporting a few years back that Orwell’s house has 32 CCTV cameras within 200 yards of it. Surveillance and its dehumanising effects were a prominent theme in 1984, with its world’s inhabitants surrounded by hidden microphones and ‘two-way telescreens’

STICKY JERK WINGS WITH SUGARED ORANGES (SERVES 4 AS A STARTER OR AS PART OF A BARBECUE SPREAD) 12 chicken wings 2tbsp soft light brown or demerara sugar 2 pipless oranges 5 long, mild red chillies, whole and undamaged

FOR THE JERK MARINADE: 4 spring onions, green part only, roughly chopped 1 hot red chilli (ideally Scotch bonnet), seeds left in 3cm (1 1/4in) piece of root ginger, cut into chunks 2tbsp thyme leaves

100ml (3 1/2fl oz) cider vinegar 3tbsp honey 2tsp ground allspice 1tsp ground cinnamon 2tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper

Put the marinade ingredients in a blender and whizz until smooth. Alternately, pound the ingredients to a paste using a pestle and mortar. Pour it over the wings, turning them over so they are well coated. Leave to marinate, covered, in the fridge for at least 4 hours, or overnight if more convenient, turning the wings over once or twice. Get a barbecue going until the coals die down to hot grey ash (or preheat an oven to 190ºC/375ºF/gas mark 5). Barbecue or cook the wings, turning them over a few times, until they are cooked through (the juices should run clear when a skewer is pushed into the thickest point) and nicely brown, basting with any leftover jerk marinade (about 15 minutes). While the wings are cooking, sprinkle the sugar on to a plate and cut the oranges into quarters. Dip the cut sides of each piece into the sugar and cook on the barbecue (or in a heavy dry frying pan or under a stovetop grill) for a few minutes until the sugar has caramelised. Keep a close eye on the oranges to prevent them from burning. At the same time, chargrill the chillies. Serve the wings with the caramelised oranges and chargrilled chillies.

Set the bananas - in their skins - on the bars of your barbecue, close to medium-hot coals. Leave to cook until the skins are black and the flesh inside feels soft when you pierce it with a skewer. Meanwhile, whip the cream until it holds its shape, then stir in the curd. Halve the passion fruit and scoop out the pulp and seeds with a teaspoon. Strain this, then remove and discard half the seeds. Return the rest to the juice and pulp. Mix half the passion fruit into the cream. Taste to see if you want to add any icing sugar (passion fruit can be very tart so even with the curd you may want to add some more sweetness). When the bananas are cooked, slit them down their length and gently open them up. Spoon some of the cream over the warm flesh and divide the remaining passion fruit pulp between the bananas - it makes the dish look just beautiful. Dust with icing sugar and serve. Another record was broken with ‘Running Sucks’, the second all women’s team to ever enter the race smashed the original all women’s team record by 1 hour 28 minutes, in a total of 15 hours 12 minutes. They were the only all women’s team to enter this year and were sponsored by Creechurch Capital. Race the Sun is so named because the main aim for teams is to complete the course before the sun sets in Peel. Mark Eastham, Adventure Events Fundraising Co-ordinator at The Children’s Centre, congratulated the winners and thanked all of the 27 team that took part, plus sponsors Mann Made Group and the Up & Running store which provided various prizes.

Mix the oil, vinegar, garlic, seasoning and parsley together. Pull the heads off the prawns and remove the little legs. (You can either discard these trimmings or use them to make fish stock.) With a sharp knife, make a shallow cut down the back of each prawn and, with your finger or a cocktail stick, remove and discard the black vein. Put the tails into the oil and vinegar mixture, cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for about an hour. Meanwhile, if you intend to cook the prawns on wooden skewers, soak these in cold water while the prawns marinate to prevent them from burning on the barbecue. Remove the prawns from their marinade and cook them either on soaked wooden skewers on a very hot barbecue or under a hot grill. Alternatively, cook on a searing griddle pan. In either case, reckon on about 3 minutes each side and baste with the marinade as you go along. Serve with lemon or lime wedges and any of the lovely sauces suggested above.

MEMORY IMPLANTS – TOTAL RECALL In his short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, Philip K Dick once again showed his ability for spookily accurate predictions. The story was the basis for the Arnie-fronted sci-fi thriller Total Recall, in which artificial memories can be implanted into people’s minds. In 2011 the first steps towards making this a reality were taken with the publication of a study by Theodore Berger of the University of Southern California, in which a microchip implanted into a rat’s brain was able to successfully mimic the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for storing long-term memory. By recording the patterns of brain activity present during the simple

travel, global media and the Internet, the world in 2012 seems a much smaller place than it did back when Orwell was penning 1984. With China emerging as the next dominant superpower, relations between Europe and the US becoming increasingly strained, and the Middle East in as much political turmoil as ever – the title ‘disputed’ is certainly apt – Orwell might just have been on to something.

BLUE EYES THINKING

Sci-fi author Philip K Dick was a master when it came to weaving tales involving authoritarian governments, conspiracy, suspicion and paranoia, and his 1956 short story – later turned into the blockbuster movie by Steven Spielberg – was a perfect example. In it, psychic law enforcers are able to foresee the future and prevent crimes before they’ve happened. The story throws up questions about free will, determinism and governmental control, and has become all the more pertinent in a post 9/11-world in which increased governmental powers have allowed suspected terrorists to be detained without trial or legal counsel on the most spurious of evidence, and in which our online activity is monitored (see ‘Surveillance’) to spot subversive language. In 2007 IBM in fact worked with Memphis Police Department to create predictive software to identify and analyse geographical trends and forecast potential crime hotspots. More recently, Professor Richard Berk of the University of Pennsylvania has developed crime prediction software using algorithms to determine which recently released prisoners are most likely to commit murder and therefore require a close eye to kept on them. It’s already being used in Maryland and Pennsylvania and is soon to be implemented in Washington. If it’s prone to error, that could cause all sorts of problems, surely?

GLOBALISATION – 1984 In 1984, the world is divided into three states: Oceania, covering North and South America, Britain and Southern Africa; Eurasia, comprised of continental Europe and Russian; East Asia – Japan, Korea and China; the Disputed Zone, covering North Africa, the Middle East and India. The exact world map that Orwell envisioned might not be 100% accurate, but the fact that the world has become increasingly connected is undisputable. Due to cheap air

Give it ten years and I reckon centeniers will have been replaced with Robocops.

PREEMPTIVE CRIME DETECTION – MINORITY REPORT

On many levels James Cameron’s Terminator films were completely preposterous – as a rule, more so as the series progressed. However, in those flashback/forward scenes of a post-apocalyptic America torn apart by a nuclear winter, we see flying robots called ‘Hunter Killers’ doing just that: hunting, killing, with big old laser cannons its weapon of choice, picking off any humans it can find. We may not be quite there just yet, but with remotelypiloted drones playing a huge role in America’s ‘War on Terror’, particularly in Pakistan and Afghanistan, a whole ethical can of worms has been opened; is there any honour in combat for a drone pilot 7,500 miles away from the battlefield? If soldiers are increasingly being taken out of the equation and conflicts are being fought between dots on a screen, is the ‘horror of war’ deterrent redundant? Worryingly, the next logical step in the evolution of drone technology seems to be the implementation of AI technology. The US recently tested the X-47B, an unmanned aircraft which, once operational, will be able to carry out preprogrammed missions at the click of a button. If that’s not a scary development, what is?

children of the eighties have been blessed with an unprecedented expansion in the means of communication, giving us more opportunities to talk/blog/text about the things we half-remember from our VHS childhoods. The children of the 1940s grew up thinking that three TV channels was the height of technological achievement, so it was unlikely that the BBC would have ever themed Saturday night around a retrospective of The Goon Show, but by now there’s probably a digital TV channel up in the 300s that only runs documentaries about Boy George’s hats. David Hasselhof still has work, Garbage Pail Kids are going for crazy money on eBay and I’ve even seen a website devoted exclusively to writing about vintage crisps. The crisps thing is a good example of something slightly weird about all this, in that it’s impossible to be objective or even informative about something that hasn’t physically existed since you were ten. You can remember how Crispy Tubes made you feel, not how they really tasted. I watched those ‘I love the Eighties’ TV clipshows and am convinced that the minor celebs taking part hadn’t bothered to review most of the stuff they were wittering on about. Vernon Kaye does not care enough about his audience to actually spend time watching DangerMouse on Youtube, whereas I researched this article by travelling back in time on a Raleigh Chopper covered in LEDs and silver foil. Great Scott!

Eighties Telly We were barely out of the 80s before people started getting teary-eyed about the TV of their childhoods, and since then there’s been a thriving industry selling Roland Rat bumbags and Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, to people who miss the days when Doctor Who had wobbly sets and there was nothing weird about Jimmy Savile introducing Gary Glitter on Top Of The Pops. Those were innocent times. Most of the nostalgia tends to be directed towards cartoons, probably because few people have memories wooly enough that they remember Grange Hill as anything other than a grim, grey launchpad for people who’d end up wrestling a Mitchell in Eastenders. Sadly you’re in for a bit of a shock if you actually go back and watch Thundercats or Dogtanian in the age of Pixar. Whilst stop-motion stuff like The Wombles, Morph and Button Moon has retained a certain shonky charm, the likes of He Man has not aged well - you’ll find smoother animation on an advert for confused.com, but minus Skeletor’s camp magic. Noble exceptions are the unexpectedly gory Legendary Cities Of Gold and the animated Transformers movie, which has matured like a fine, robotic wine. The entire thing is on Youtube - you’re in for a treat.

The Real Big Brother?

EORGE ORWELL’S 1984, WRITTEN IN 1949, IS A DYSTOPIAN SATIRE IN WHICH A TOTALITARIAN GOVERNMENT REIGNS, REWRITING HISTORY, CONTROLLING THE THOUGHTS OF THE POPULATION, AND OF COURSE, WATCHING THEM THROUGH THEIR TELEVISION SETS. THE LEADER OF THIS GOVERNMENT, KNOWN ONLY AS ‘BIG BROTHER’, IS AN OMNISCIENT FIGURE. LIKE GOD, HE IS ALL-SEEING AND ALL-KNOWING. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU… It’s easy to see why Orwell feared that this could be Britain’s future. Stalin’s control of the Soviet Union only lacked the advanced technology described in the novel, and his regime had many supporters in Britain. Wartime government legislation had not yet been discarded; rationing was still in force, and the government still controlled what our farmers grew to feed us. Wartime slogans such as “careless talk costs lives” still rang in the ears of the nation. Spies could still be everywhere, so, like the characters in 1984, people still had to be careful about what they said to whom. The British government was also spying on the population. Of course, they didn’t call it that. They called it ‘mass observation’. In a bid to find out what the man in the street thought of life during and after the war, people were employed to listen to conversations on buses, in post office queues and pubs, taking notes and reporting their findings. The government also asked people to send in diaries of their daily lives. Could this really be a precursor to the future Orwell outlined in his novel? More than sixty years after Orwell wrote that novel; ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Thought Police’ are terms we still use to describe excessive government interference or control. The suggestion that we should all carry identity cards was greeted with horror, and various city councils have been forced to take down CCTV cameras following accusations of spying. If George Orwell came back from the dead now, though, it wouldn’t be CCTV or identity cards that would make him think he got it right (if a few years early). It would be Facebook. You see, the government doesn’t need to employ people to listen to conversations any more. It doesn’t need to ask people to send their diaries to be read by a voyeuristic civil servant. A spotty geek from America called Mark Zuckerberg saved them all the trouble, by inventing a website on which people voluntarily tell complete strangers all about their lives.

Facebook has achieved something even Orwell’s Big Brother couldn’t manage. Global mass observation. Any totalitarian regime has the thoughts of the whole world available to it at the touch of a button. Big Brother doesn’t need a special transceiving television set to see into your living room. He just needs a computer. Periodically, Facebookers will post up statuses about privacy settings which can be applied to stop this, that or the other being seen by various authorities. It never seems to occur to people that it would be much simpler not to post every little detail about yourself on a website. The police can get access to people’s Facebook pages, but if you select this setting or that setting, they can’t see your profile. There has been massive objection to the use of body-scanners in airports. How dare this government force us to bare all in blurry images to airport officials? We can’t allow our rights to privacy to be eroded like this, even though we are happy for Facebook ‘friends’ who we barely know to see those pictures of the office party that got out of hand… It is strange how we have invited the much-feared Big Brother into our homes. People believe that mobile phones are used to track our movements by the government, but they still go out and buy them, whilst damning the aforementioned government for spying on them. They aren’t forcing you to buy one, you know. For some strange reason, the modern world seems to be full of people who want to air their dirty linen in public. People are falling over themselves to get on The Jeremy Kyle Show, and tell the world all about their promiscuity, but you can bet that those same people would have something to say about their civil liberties if there was a CCTV camera pointing into their bedroom. Then there’s Twitter, where we can tell Big Brother what we are having for breakfast. George Orwell must be revolving so fast in his grave by now, we could use him to power the National Grid. He saw a future in which people were forced to give up their privacy. I doubt he ever would have believed that people would give it up without a fight, not out of fear, but out of desire. We’ve created a goldfish-bowl environment that Stalin would have cherished. We’ve given the government all the information they want, and we will be entirely to blame if they decide to use it for their own benefit. Big Brother is watching…

Chris Heyes (Crosby) set up Rockingmann Festivals Ltd. in 2008, after arriving at an idea for a successful IoM music festival. It was put on hold whilst he worked on the London 2012 Olympic Games and other projects. Manx student Vanessa Simpson, along with a group of friends from Liverpool John Moores University, has beaten more than 350 other companies from across the UK to win the national final of the Young Enterprise Start Up Awards.

Sure is delighted to announce that they are the principal sponsor of an exciting new outdoor centre. Located in the heart of South Barrule plantation the Sure Ape Mann Adventure Park has lots of exciting obstacles to tackle including zip wires, swings and scramble nets, as well as treetop trails and rope courses.

The Awards pit budding entrepreneurs from universities across the country against each other in the challenge of building a successful business from scratch. The national final saw top teams from the regional finals submit a business plan and an investment proposal, design a trade stand and attend a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style interview, all for the chance to win a spot at the European final. Vanessa and her fellow young entrepreneurs identified a gap in the coffee-saturated hot beverages market for easily accessible and premium quality loose-leaf tea, and set about establishing The Teabox Company in response. The company been trading since December, and is primarily an online shop for tea-loving consumers, although it also offers a B2B service and currently stocks six restaurants in the North West, with plans to expand further.

The park has been designed to be suitable for families, with childfriendly rope courses, off-road pedal go karts, three zip wires and seventeen other challenges to tackle. There is also the “Monkey” tree climbing kit which can be adapted with a variety of harnesses to allow children as young as 6 years old to have a go, while still providing a great challenge for adults. The “Monkeys” are proving very popular with people of all ages and the equipment can also be used for birthday parties, corporate events and team building.

The Teabox Company beat off tough competition from nine other start-up companies at the final stage of the competition, also winning Best Trade Stand at the event, which was held at One Canada Square in Canary Wharf, London. The team will now go on to compete in the European finals of the competition in Liege, Belgium in July.

KATIE MELUA BECOMES JOINT PATRON OF MANX CANCER HELP FOLLOWING SUCCESSFUL 30TH ANNIVERSARY BALL Katie Melua has become joint Patron of Manx Cancer Help alongside her husband James Toseland as the Island charity celebrates its 30th anniversary. The internationally-renowned singer/songwriter, famous for such hits as The Closest Thing to Crazy and Nine Million Bicycles, offered the charity her support after attending the Manx Cancer Help Ball on May 11 with husband James, the two-time Superbike World Champion, in his capacity as Patron. FELL RUNNERS SMASH RACE THE SUN RECORD A team of some of the best fell runners from the UK and Isle of Man smashed the course record in The Children’s Centre’s Race The Sun relay on Saturday (May 18). The event – organised by the Island’s leading charity for families and children and sponsored by Mann Made Group - involves teams running a clockwise lap of the Island’s Raad ny Foillan 98 mile coastal footpath starting and finishing in Peel. There are 10 legs of the relay with teams allowed a maximum of 10 runners. Manxman Lloyd Taggart led an eight-man team which clocked 10h 14m 54s easily beating the previous record of 11h 37m 50s set by a team representing The Children’s Centre in the 2010 race.

The frustration felt by partners is easy to understand and they have our sympathy but when the snorer is waking up from 9 hours’ sleep and still feeling tired there may be something more sinister going on, like sleep apnoea. Mark McEnroe, Genius’ Clinical Physiologist, has 18 years’ experience of sleep medicine and he explains that sleep apnoea occurs when a person briefly stops breathing during their sleep. Some people experience sleep apnoea when they have a typical cold with a stuffy nose and runny nose and their bed partners may complain that they are snoring. Unfortunately for others the situation is much worse and they can stop breathing for up to a minute at a time – sometimes for up to 30 times an hour. Some people are prone to sleep apnoea because of the physical features of their mouth and airway. Consultant ENT Surgeon, Mr. Richard Hogg, is able to examine patients and offer surgery to improve the airway if this is found to be the problem. As he said, “there are many things that can increase the risk of snoring and sleep apnoea and some I am sure you will be aware of, such as drinking alcohol at night, getting older, increased weight or sleeping on your back but there are other factors too such as having enlarged tonsils or a small or recessed jaw.” UK Government research found that as many as 4% of middle-aged men and 2% of middle-aged women in the UK may have some form of sleep apnoea. Director Nathan Bloch explains that Genius Sleep Clinic is the only private clinic on the Isle of Man to be able to provide prescriptions for Constant Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy to people with symptoms of sleep apnoea, here and on our neighbouring Islands.

AUTONOMOUS KILLING MACHINES – THE TERMINATOR On many levels James Cameron’s Terminator films were completely preposterous – as a rule, more so as the series progressed. However, in those flashback/forward scenes of a post-apocalyptic America torn apart by a nuclear winter, we see flying robots called ‘Hunter Killers’ doing just that: hunting, killing, with big old laser cannons its weapon of choice, picking off any humans it can find. We may not be quite there just yet, but with remotelypiloted drones playing a huge role in America’s ‘War on Terror’, particularly in Pakistan and Afghanistan, a whole ethical can of worms has been opened; is there any honour in combat for a drone pilot 7,500 miles away from the battlefield? If soldiers are increasingly being taken out of the equation and conflicts are being fought between dots on a screen, is the ‘horror of war’ deterrent redundant? Worryingly, the next logical step in the evolution of drone technology seems to be the implementation of AI technology. The US recently tested the X-47B, an unmanned aircraft which, once operational, will be able to carry out preprogrammed missions at the click of a button. If that’s not a scary development, what is?

PREEMPTIVE CRIME DETECTION – MINORITY REPORT Sci-fi author Philip K Dick was a master when it came to weaving tales involving authoritarian governments, conspiracy, suspicion and paranoia, and his 1956 short story – later turned into the blockbuster movie by Steven Spielberg – was a perfect example. In it, psychic law enforcers are able to foresee the future and prevent crimes before they’ve happened. The story throws up questions about free will, determinism and governmental control, and has become all the more pertinent in a post 9/11-world in which increased governmental powers have allowed suspected terrorists to be detained without trial or legal counsel on the most spurious of evidence, and in which our online activity is monitored (see ‘Surveillance’) to spot subversive language. In 2007 IBM in fact worked with Memphis Police Department to create predictive software to identify and analyse geographical trends and forecast potential crime hotspots. More recently, Professor Richard Berk of the University of Pennsylvania has developed crime prediction software using algorithms to determine which recently released prisoners are most likely to commit murder and therefore require a close eye to kept on them. It’s already being used in Maryland and Pennsylvania and is soon to be implemented in Washington. If it’s prone to error, that could cause all sorts of problems, surely?

Why are so many people registering their aircrafts in the IoM and how does this help the economy?

In 2003, the Island opened the commercial yacht register and has attracted significant numbers of superyachts as a result. Following the success of the yacht register, the private aircraft register was established in 2007. The aim was to provide a customer focused service for the registration of high quality private and corporate jets and twin turbine-engine helicopters. The only dedicated corporate aircraft register in Europe, the Registry offers high international standards and at the end of April 2013 the 580th aircraft was registered. This helps the local economy by providing hundreds of local jobs across all sectors ranging from the Registry, service providers, lawyers, accountants, bankers through to maintenance and operational staff. The Island has built an ecosystem of expertise which is now internationally respected and relied upon, thereby generating business locally from international clients. Additionally, this is often the first contact a high net worth individual has with the Isle of Man and further business opportunities may subsequently arise, for example wealth structuring, yacht registration, relocation etc. Industry events hosted on the Island such as the ICM Aviation Conference also benefit the local economy through the booking of venues, catering, and delegations of attendees flying into the Island and staying in local hotels.

I am a local business owner; how do I protect my profits against the loss of a key member of staff?

I noticed a lot of local restaurants have been closing lately: do you think there is a future for the restaurant sector in the Isle of Man?

I am in the retail sector; is this new FATCA agreement going to have an impact on my business?

The absence of an important employee can damage the business in a number of ways. In a moment it could lose key skills, experience and contacts. This is why you should consider taking steps to protect your business now.

We see many Isle of Man eateries change hands and many people are prepared to ‘give it a go’, perhaps to fulfil a burning ambition to own their own restaurant having watched Masterchef for the last few years! In reality, and no matter how good they may be, some restaurants are doomed before they open the doors - even an historical stigma with the location can be a major factor.

The death, critical illness, or disability of a key member of staff can have a detrimental effect on the performance of a business, in the short term at least, and protecting business owners’ earning capacity should be high on the list of priorities. Typically, key employees will be the senior management or partners, but there is also a case for personnel with fundamental roles in the business.

Key Employee Protection insures against the financial impact of such an event by providing a cash injection to the business if a key employee dies or suffers a critical illness. It can also provide a regular income for the business if the key employee is temporarily disabled and unable to work. The level of insurance can be calculated under different bases, such as multiples of business profits or salaries of the key personnel, and a proportion of the payroll cost, depending upon the type and structure of the business. Such cover won’t stop the unthinkable from happening, but it can make dealing with the financial consequences a little easier.

The issue is simply one of supply and demand. I hear many times that there is a need for more restaurants, expanded retail, more night life options etc, but the problem has always been the volume of trade needed to first invest in and then maintain these businesses.

Of course, the better run operations have more of a chance and there are a number of established restaurants on the Island that have traded for many years and enjoy a regular and loyal customer base. Ultimately, the only way to ensure there is a thriving and high quality dining scene on the Isle of Man is for the local population to get out there and support it. In effect; use it or lose it!

FATCA is a piece of US tax legislation designed to force financial institutions around the world to tell the US tax authorities about US citizens who hold money or investments with them. Other jurisdictions have since indicated that they also want to put FATCA style agreements in place so that their tax authorities know where their residents have their financial assets. The proposed FATCA agreements with the US and the UK are unlikely to have a direct impact on a business in the retail sector unless that business is conducting an element of financial services business. For example, if a supermarket was offering banking services then the banking arm of that supermarket would have to comply with FATCA. If a retail business is not offering financial services then the only likely impact on it will be that its bank and any other financial institutions of which it is a customer may ask it for information about its shareholders. This is because the bank has to categorise its corporate customers and, for certain corporates, the bank will have to look through to the underlying shareholders to identify whether they are citizens, or residents, of the US and/or any other country which implements FATCA.

Oh yes, they may arrive in a flurry of kisses and hugs, but they'll be leaving with you holding a shotgun to their retreating backs.

At first all will be well. Make the most of that first day they arrive (or in my case that first five minutes). Things will then quickly devolve into a master/slave scenario, with your guests making demands that will stretch your nerves and good humour to the limits of human endurance. Your home will suddenly become full of their clutter. You will quickly tire of having to constantly introduce them to everyone you meet. Never, ever, tell them to treat your home like it's their own. They will take over the best seats to watch hours of International Bowls and hold on to the remote like a junkie clutching a stolen prescription pad. It'll be like they've never seen a television set before. Somehow, they will also manage to delete all the shows you've been saving on your planner for weeks, drop biscuit crumbs everywhere and start putting their feet up on your furniture. At this stage you will simply want to punch them until they're unconscious. They will go through your kitchen like locusts, devouring everything in their path, yet never once offering to replace any of it. You will come down each morning to a messy kitchen, wet towels everywhere and no milk for your own breakfast. You will lock yourself in the garden shed and play with a band saw and your own fantasies. If they've brought any children with them, just accept that they will be using your walls as a sketch-pad and your sofas as trampolines. Also be prepared for elderly relatives to be hypochondriacs who are fully expecting to die in your house. They will cheerfully tell you that they're "not expecting to make it through the night". Yeah, join the club. They will take malingering to a new level and have you rushing up and down the stairs all day with dainty morsels to tempt their appetite, and various medications and hot water bottles. You will overnight become their full-time carer. The whole house will go into silent lockdown when they listen to the Archers. Magically though, they will recover at the same time every day and practically sprint

downstairs like a teenager to watch their favourite game show. By now, you'll know to just leave the sherry bottle with them. If relatives are an ordeal best avoided, I'm afraid friends are no better. The most annoying thing is when you realise you no longer have much, if anything, in common with them. So now you have to suffer the double agony of dancing attendance on people you haven't seen in ages and whom you don't even like anymore! This can be hell. They will have developed strange food allergies and have high expectations that you will cater to their every whim. Somehow they have mistaken your home for the Dorchester. They will also constantly use your telephone for long distance calls to other potential suckers to put them up as they "pass through". Expect them to commandeer your computer for hours as well, usually looking at the kind of thing that will result in your eventual arrest as part of a police sting operation. I also hate it when the first thing they tell you after not having seen you for 10 years is that they're on anti-depressants and just want a quiet time. They will then spend most of their time morosely struggling with a 5,000 piece jigsaw of a brick wall. I especially hate it when I have to put up with couples who want to use their time in my home to rekindle their sex life. Why do they do this? Even if I place them in a room as far away as possible from mine, I can still hear them going at it like two walruses fighting over a penguin. Even worse is the couple who are heading for splitsville. They will choose your home to unleash their mutual venom and anger and the resulting tension will be unbearable. Eventually you will just want to throw yourself down the stairs in the hope that you can get some respite in a hospital bed. But I reserve my deepest hatred for the con-artists who, as they are about to leave, turn around with a big smile and say that they've enjoyed your hospitality so much they've changed their flight, just so they can prolong their torture of you for another week... CHARITY QUIZ - The Outback, Douglas

Bernadette Dempsey and Hayley Phillips are trekking Mount Kilimanjaro, in October 2014. They will face trekking several hours a day, for 7 days, carrying 15kg of weight on their backs. Due to the tough task ahead they have already begun training. All of their hard work is to raise proceeds for Rebecca House Children’s Hospice. They have seen paparazzi@gallery.co.im first hand the support they provide, not only

to the children but to the families who are also affected. Their first fund raising event was a charity quiz which was held at The Outback on Monday, 29th April. Local businesses donated raffle prizes, which included a mobile phone from Sure and a night at the Regency Hotel.

Marg Hewson has put together contributions from over twenty of her friends and fellow artists, including paintings, photographs, sculptures and pots, and even specially constructed garden furniture. “Some of the contributors regularly exhibit in galleries around the Island,” says Marg, “but I was particularly keen to include others who are equally talented, but a bit more shy about putting their work on show. Led through irregular passageways and around the spiral staircases to different rooms and spaces you will find your senses and emotions stirred and bewildered as you experience encounters based on historic tales of Castle Rushen.

With a small group of audience members you will be taken back to the Castle’s very beginning and will be led on a Labyrinth of stories in which you will intervene, taking a meaning from the person, place, story or object which you have just encountered.

Labyrinth has been created by a team at Manx National Heritage in conjunction with leading UK museum theatre professionals Dr Anna Farthing and Chris Cade and a new on-Island theatre group Isle of Man History in Action. Dr Anna Farthing is an award winning creator of drama in live and recorded media, with a special interest in creating original material from historical themes. Freelance actor and storyteller Chris Cade undertakes bespoke educational theatre projects and has worked with Isle of Man History in Action to develop the performance.

The performances will take place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July. There are seven departure times:

Director of the month

Milos Forman Czech born American Milos Forman is featured as this month’s director as his 1984 film ‘Amadeus’ not only won the Oscar for Best Picture, but he also won for Best Director as well as a host of other awards including a prestigious Cesar Award. Forman began his career as one of the most important filmmakers during the Czechoslovak New Wave during the 1960s, in particular with his film ‘Fireman’s Ball’ (1967). Although the film was a relatively simple comedy, the film was viewed as a satire of Eastern European Communism and was banned in Czechoslovakia for many years as a result of the Soviet regime. Forman moved to the United States in the late sixties, continuing his film career but it was with his 1975 film, ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ with which he broke into the mainstream. The film, starring Jack Nicholson, is one of only three to have ever won the ‘Big Five’ at the Oscars, which includes Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor & Actress. Forman is known for being selective in his material, meaning that many times during his career he has gone up to seven years without making a film. This selective attitude is emphasised when he decided to follow up his Oscar success by producing an adaption of the Broadway rock opera, ‘Hair’ (1979). Five years later Forman directed ‘Amadeus’, his masterful Mozart biopic told from the perspective of Antonio Salieri. ‘Amadeus’ was Forman’s second foray into Oscar domination, accumulating a total of eight Oscars, and is currently the last film to have been nominated twice for Best Leading Actor, Tom Hulce for his portrayal of Mozart, and F. Murray Abraham as Salieri (which he went on to win). Since then Forman has directed films such as ‘The People Vs. Larry Flynt’ (1996), and ‘Man on the Moon’ (1999), starring Jim Carey. Forman remains selective to this day, his last film being released in 2009, but remains a highly respected, established and influential film maker.

Amadeus

Amadeus was the film of the year in 1984, sweeping the 57th Academy Awards by winning a total of 8 Oscars. These included Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for F. Murray Abraham for his portrayal of composer Antonio Salieri. Based upon the stage play of the same name, Amadeus tells the story of Mozart during his time in 18th century Vienna, told through flash back by his musical rival Salieri (Abraham) who is now confined to an insane asylum. Content as a well respected and prosperous court composer for Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II and a member of the cultural elite of Vienna, Salieri’s world is turned upside down with the arrival of musical prodigy Mozart, who’s genius is matched only by his lewd and abrasive personality.

Oblivion

TBC Dir. Joseph Kosinski. Starring: Tom Cruise & Morgan Freeman. In the year 2073 Earth has been nearly destroyed after a devastating alien invasion. Society exists in floating cities miles above the earth, and a massive operation has been undertaken to extract Earth’s last remaining resources. Tom Cruise stars as Jack Harper, a former marine commander who has been sent to the surface to repair the drones harvesting the resources, but when he encounters a young female stranger, his view of the war, and the society he lives in, changes forever. The film is based upon the graphic novel originally written by director Joseph Kosinski.

Evil Dead

18 Dir. Fede Alvarez. Starring: Jane Levy & Shiloh Fernandez. A remake of Sam Raimi’s critically acclaimed 1981 cult horror classic, it is the fifth instalment of ‘The Evil Dead’ franchise and the first to not be directed by Sam Raimi or star Bruce Campbell. Five friends travel to a remote cabin where they discover the Book of the Dead, and mistakenly unleash an evil demon lying dormant in the nearby woods. The demon begins to possess each of the high schoolers until only one is left to fight for survival.

Iron Man 3

TBC Dir. Shane Black. Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley. Tony Stark’s world is torn apart when he is targeted by the fearsome terrorist called the Mandarin. Stark dons the suit once more on a quest of retribution and to find out what it really means to be Iron Man. The first Marvel release since The Avengers took the world by storm last summer, the film has been asked to be thought of as less a sequel to Iron Man 2, but more a spin-off of The Avengers. While this is most likely a marketing ploy to capitalise on The Avengers huge global financial success, the Marvel film series are rumoured to be taking a fresh approach in order to combat the planned D.C comics franchise reboot spearheaded by the upcoming Superman flick ‘Man of Steel’.

Scary Movie 5

TBC Dir. Malcolm Lee. Starring: Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan & Ashley Tisdale. Happily married Dan & Jody bring back their first born daughter back from the hospital when they begin to experience strange goings on. Soon bizarre activities follow Dan to his job as an Ape researcher and Jody as a Ballet Dancer. With the help of some cameras and “certified” experts, they begin to realise they are being stalked by a nefarious demon. The first film in the franchise not to feature Anna Faris as Cindy, parodies in this title will include Paranormal Activity, Black Swan, Inception and The Hunger Games.

Ghostbusters

Based upon the seminal 1949 novel of the same name written by George Orwell, the film tells the story of Winston Smith (played by John Hurt), who lives in a post-war Britain which is ruled by a totalitarian police state headed by the omnipresent Big Brother. Winston lives as a small-time bureaucrat in the decaying and squalid conditions of future London. Living in a world where his every move is captured on hidden cameras and microphones, he harbours a secret hatred for Big Brother which drives him into a self-imposed exile, afraid of the fatal punishment for “thoughtcrime”. His life is changed forever when he meets fellow rebel Julia, who harbours similar thoughts, and they begin a secret love affair in defiance of the party.

Ghostbusters takes the laurel of being the most popular film during 1984, grossing over $230 million in the U.S alone, or $530 million in today’s money. The film stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd & Harold Ramis as three parapsychology professors who start their own ghost removal service after they are fired from Columbia University. After a few rag-tag missions they soon encounter the infamous Gozer, a shape-shifting god of destruction. This hugely popular culture phenomenon launched a long running franchise including, a sequel, video games, comics as well as a long-running animated series.

A REVOLUTIONARY YEAR FOR POP CULTURE (SO I’VE HEARD) AH THE 80’S. WHAT A CRAZY TIME I ASSUME IT WAS. NO INTERNET, MASSIVE MOBILE PHONES AND A STRANGE MALE OBSESSION WITH MAKE-UP. words | Nathanial Eker A year before Marty Mcfly graced our screens in “Back to the future” was the year nineteen eighty four. A good year for films with Amadeus scooping up the Oscars, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was dominating the box office and Star Trek Three being best forgotten. It’s interesting to look a few of the highlights of the year in terms of pop culture (god forbid I actually write about something serious like events of the year) from the perspective of someone who was exactly minus ten that year. So, I’m going to have a look at five things that came out that year and why I view them as so revolutionary and how they are still relevant today. Band Aid release “Do they Know it’s Christmas”: In a fantastic and cheesy way to raise money for charity, Bob Geldof and co. apparently recorded (for a time) the biggest selling record ever, without even so much as a rehearsal. While this is obviously an incredible achievement, not to mention one of the catchiest Christmas tunes around, when compared to modern Christmas records, it puts a somewhat depressing slant on the age we live in. This was evidentially a time where a group of singers would come together for a good cause and do something great out of the kindness of their own heart, and in the process create a really good song too. It’s upsetting to see that the time-honored traditions of both charity singles and Christmas singles are dwindling having been crushed by the X-factor Christmas record which will inevitably take the most sales each year. While I know this isn’t entirely true as charity lives on through groups like the Military Wives and to be fair, certain bands like Coldplay still release Christmas records. But for me, the whole notion of it is pretty much dead. And in this respect, this is one instance where 1984 beats 2013. 5

The birth of the Famicom - The word Famicom will mean very little to most people, even those who were around in the 80’s. It was Nintendo’s first game console and came out in Japan in 83’. Then it was distributed to all other regions two years later, calling itself the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System.) 84’ acted as a year in between and was the year when Nintendo announced the NES, presenting it in the cleverest way they could have possibly thought of. Instead or marketing it as technology like their competitors, they chose to include a toy robot, “R.O.B” (Robotic operating buddy) with every console. As a result they appealed to children, single handedly brought gaming back into the mainstream after the crash of '83’ and cemented how common marketing of games would be even to this day. This not only shows prowess in marketing tactics by being choosy with audiences, but also brought out many fan favorites that remain a huge part of pop culture today, with culprits including Donkey Kong 3, Ice Climbers and Balloon Man. A revolutionary step for the game industry, to be sure. 4

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” gets a worldwide release - how can you not love thriller? No matter what your opinions on the King of Pop, no-one can deny that this is a stellar record, which defined the decade six years before it was over. While it officially came out in 1982

on the album “Thriller” the legendary music video wasn’t created until a year later and didn’t get a worldwide release for another year, in 1984. The iconic zombie/werewolf video set in stone how to make an incredible music video, using elements in film that we take for granted these days as they are a dime a dozen, but at the time were seriously something new. Not only that, but it made the classic horror monsters cool again, with an interest in horror films with iconic horror series like Friday 13th and Nightmare on Elm St becoming as cool as a brand new 80’s CD player. 2

Ghostbusters- When referring to the 80’s is there really any other film (with the possible exception of the Star Wars films) that has affected pop culture as much as Ghostbusters? It dominated the box office at the time and for good reason. Hilarious writing, fantastic casting and pretty cool 80’s special effects. It has such an impact on pop culture that even today, people are talking about it. Lines are quoted, the music is hummed and above all, the catch phrase “Who you gonna call?” has become as memorable as “I am your father.” You only have to look in your local film store to see the films still selling and even modern console games being made with the original cast showing there is still a defining interest in the franchise that could not even be killed by a mediocre sequel. Oh, and if you really doubt that Ghostbusters still has a place in pop culture with little interest in it, just Google Ghostbusters 3 and you can see how high the demand for a return of the team is. 1

Transformers- I thought to myself, is there really anything so 80’s as Transformers? It was a genius proposal; talking robots that turn into vehicles and sometimes guns. They knew they would appeal to young boys and they knew they would sell a LOT of toys. But I don’t think that the creators could have possibly known to what extent their show about talking robots would effect on pop culture. What relevance does it have today? If you need to ask that, where have you been for the last few years? There has been a huge resurgence in the franchise with three major movies, countless toys and merchandise, not to mention many revival series on TV. It’s an 80’s phenomenon that just exploded, with nothing comparable to it with the possible exception of the Ninja Turtles. Not only did it (and still does) have an incredible economic effect, selling millions worth of merchandise; it also had a dramatic social effect. The movie from '86’ (spoilers) broke many eighties kids hearts by killing Optimus Prime off in a pretty brutal fashion. So in conclusion, 1984 had some pretty awesome pop culture. All of the above still has a massive impact on us today, whether it be because of the marketing, a remake/reboot or because it was something totally new. No-one can deny that any of these weren’t incredible hits at the time and they still leave an impact on society today. Seriously, I challenge you to try and not hear Band Aid at Christmas this year, it just won’t happen. Bottom line is; 1984 was a great year for pop culture; And it just kept on coming after that…

The bathing beauty contest held in the Isle of Man in the forties and fifties amongst other archive photographs provided the inspiration behind Manx National Heritage’s Vintage Hair event in conjunction with the Isle of Man College held at the iMuseum on Thursday 2 May. Hairspray and Hollywood glamour filled the air as Isle of Man Hair and Beauty students took on their second live styling challenge with Manx National Heritage – to recreate retro hairstyles from the fifties and sixties inspired by photographs and film footage from the iMuseum archives.

Join the blue brigade for dazzling eyes. From subtle to statement, Lisa Haynes reveals the right hue for you.

Put down the black eyeliner it’s time to bring on the summertime blues. Veering away from a classic look is never easy, but this season’s palette of sea-inspired blues are pretty persuasive, whether you want to dip a toe in the water or dive right in. If Fashion Week’s backstage looks are anything to go by, blue is officially the new black. From inky navy liner at Mary Katrantzou to embellished aquamarine lids at Christian Dior, there’s a hue and application for everyone. The look may be borrowed from the 1980’s but, reworked with modern techniques, blue eyes can be both striking and subtle.

Eye know best Before you decide how bold you want your blue, the beauty shelves are awash with tempting oceanic shades. If in doubt, let your eye colour lead the way. “Blue is perfect for you if you have brown eyes,” says Rebecca Butterworth, a M.A.C senior artist. “Choose a deep cerulean or navy blue to give your eye colour more depth. “If you have green eyes, choose a brighter blue - more on the teal or turquoise colour family.” It’s only those with blue eyes who need to be wary of drowning out their natural colour.

“Blue eye make-up actually doesn’t really do much for someone with blue eyes - it tends to swamp the colour that’s naturally there.”

Aquamarine ace Flaunt some true blue bravado with a bold wash of colour over the entire eyelid. Use a highly pigmented creamy eyeshadow to really pack a punch. A blue version of a smoky eye can also look dramatic for after-dark moments. “Use a deep navy kohl pencil and rim the entire eye, top and bottom,” Butterworth suggests. “Blink your eyes together hard a few times to move the pencil around then take a soft eyeshadow brush and blend the pencil up and around the eye to create a modern, smoky look. Buff a bold blue eyeshadow, like M.A.C’s Freshwater, over the top of the pencil.” Remember to keep your lips and cheeks pared right back to let your eyes work the room.

Thin blue line A graphic liner is the modern way to work a pop of colour and not go overboard with blue. “A directional bold eyeliner is an amazing way to add a mega flash of colour, without having to brave coloured eyeshadow,” Draw the eyeliner close to the lashes, starting at the inner corner of the eyelid. A fine line will give discreet colour, while a thicker line will be more dramatic. For a real blink-and-you’ll-miss-it blue moment, sweep inside the lower lash line to achieve an icy stare. If you’re wobbly with the kohl pencil, draw on one of the eye shadow crayon formulations, which are softer and easier to apply. Simply build up the colour for a more extreme look.

Lacquer lashes Banish visions of Bananarama, because coloured mascara has undergone a 2013 revival. A flash of blue will make your eyes pop in an instant. Just like a black mascara, one coat will add a subtle effect, but layering on two to three generous coats will make a fluttering statement.

Take the black polish and, using a nail art brush, start two-thirds of the way up one side of each nail and paint a thin diagonal line up to the centre tip.

Repeat the process on the opposite side of the nail to create a ‘V’ shape.

Beauty bulletin Crowning glory Almost three quarters of women (73%) consider their hair to be their most important feature. Over fifty specially invited guests came to help Pat celebrate a special birthday - in fact - it was so special that 007 & his arch enemy - Ernest Stavro Blofeld - turned up to check it out. The guests gathered within the Sidings in Castletown, before boarding the fired up locomotive No. 13, Kissack, with its walkthrough saloon carriages bound for The Tickethall restaurant at Douglas station. At 19:00 precisely, the station master’s whistle blew and “all aboard” was shouted. The party was greeted at Castletown station platform by 007 & his famous adversary from Thunderball, Blofeld, they then enjoyed champagne and canapés served by the train’s very own butler, Nigel Sperring. As the party guests disembarked the train, they were piped into dinner by the Ellan Vannin Pipes & Drums. Clad in Manx National Tartan, designed in 1946 by Patricia McQuad, the guests walked down the platform past a cascade of pyrotechnics, stopping briefly to pose for a photo opportunity with two exquisite Aston Martins, parked outside The Tickethall with - of course - Pat’s personalised 007-PAT plates.

was the amazing ‘Another Shade of Blue’ five - piece band, a bespoke music talent who performed music from all 21 films, plus some famous incidental music too. What really sets this band apart from other acts was the ability to supply fantastic entertainment whilst blending into the background of the event, allowing them to re-create a full orchestral sound.

Just one last surprise for Pat, the band stopped playing, & as if from nowhere ‘Solo Otra Vez’ burst out from the PA. Tenors UnLimited - ‘The Rat Pack of Opera’ fresh from their sell out success that night at the Gaiety Theatre, came to wish Pat happy birthday. They gave a forty-five minute impromptu and very intimate performance. Scott, Paul and Jem, using talents from their previous solo careers in the opera, theatre and recording worlds,

set out to bring their own unique blend of wit, charm and vocal arrangements - along with original compositions to the party. To end the night with pizzazz, 007 said “ You don’t think I enjoyed what we did this evening, do you? What I did tonight was for King and country! You don’t think it gave me any pleasure, do you? ” (Thunderball 1965)

NICHE & SIMPLE There’s something fishy going on in the Isle of Man! The Mowat family has just opened a whole new kettle of fish, The Boatyard in Peel. a new addition to their portfolio of destination Island restaurants.

o strangers to hospitality, the family have previously owned and run restaurants and a hotel in the UK. Visiting the Isle of Man in 2006, Joan and Graham Mowat quickly fell in love with the Island and couldn’t resist the urge to start a new project.

Within a matter or weeks, they grasped the reigns at Tanroagan Restaurant. Building on its established reputation amongst seafood lovers, Tanroagan has gone from strengthto-strength, keeping true to its origins as IoM seafood specialists.

The Spanish Josper charcoal oven - the only one on the Island - takes centre stage in the open plan kitchen. The chef can be seen cooking fresh steaks, meats and fish over the flaming hot charcoals, creating palatable, distinctive taste.

The Mowat family business - Tartan Group Limited - is quick to put the success of Tanroagan down to its philosophy: Keeping things both niche and simple.

Diners visiting the Swiss House encounter a completely new interior design, created by commercial and residential designer, Rumana Swinton.

After six successful years on Ridgeway Street, Douglas, and being joined by daughter Laura and their son, Robin, the family set about looking for a new premises for Tanroagan, having all but outgrown its relatively small, popular dining room.

Open six days a week (and for Sunday lunch), the Swiss House has become a much-loved venue for families, foodies and people seeking a relaxed and memorable meal in a charming location.

The lengthy search resulted in Tanroagan remaining in its current location. Instead, the family opened an additional restaurant, Swiss House, Glen Helen, in 2012. The Swiss House arrived on the books with

was not a particularly good vintage in Europe and there are few wines still drinking well. Vintages tend to vary more in cooler climates, which means that in northern Europe there can be much variation from one year to the next. Any wine produced from one year’s harvest is a ‘vintage’ wine, but the weather conditions will determine whether it is a good, indifferent or poor vintage.

vinified and partly aged in oak barrels, resulting in a well structured, fruity wine with vanilla notes. An absolutely superb red is Vallet Freres’ Beaune 1er Cru Les Epenottes 2009. Vallet Freres have been voted ‘Best French Wine Producer of the Year 2012’ and when you taste this wine, you will understand why. Silky smooth, elegant and stylish with flavours of cherries, red berries, spice and vanilla. Well balanced and sophisticated, it is a wine to enjoy with food, and it will continue to improve over the next five years.

Fast forward 25 years and it was a completely different story. 2009 was a good or even great vintage in many parts of Europe with wines that are not only drinking well now, but will keep for many years. Following a cold and wet winter, ground water levels were high, so when hot, dry conditions prevailed in the summer months, threatening drought, which would stress the vines, there was sufficient water available to allow the grapes to ripen successfully. Unusually for Burgundy, it was a vintage to suit production of both red and white, with just the right balance of acidity and tannins to give wines of excellent concentration and finesse. A white worth tasting is Louis Jadot’s Chateau des Jacques Bourgogne Blanc 2009. This is one of the best value white Burgundies on the market. Produced from vines grown on the Chateau des Jacques estate in the very south of Burgundy, like all top white Cote d’Or wines, this is

and pepper. Although it is drinking well now, it can be cellared for at least another 5 years. At £17.45, this is a great alternative if you enjoy Châteauneuf du Pape.

Another French region that really benefited from the near perfect growing conditions in 2009 was Beaujolais, a region often overlooked and underrated. The 2009 wines were full of flavour with more body than in cooler vintages, but good producers were able to keep the wonderful aromatics of the Gamay grape. One example is the Fleurie Domaine des Chaffangeons La Madone 2009. This single estate wine is soft and delicate with aromas of raspberries and cherries. On the palate there are hints of liquorice and spice mingling with the same fruity flavours. Bernard and Jean-Christophe Vallet receiving their award The Rhone has enjoyed some fantastic vintages in recent years and 2009 was no exception. One fine example is Domaine Le Clos des Cazaux’s Vacqueyras, a blend of Syrah and Grenache. Breeshey Jennings bought her ground floor apartment, in an old boarding house conversion in central Douglas, with a view to its potential. Immediately she saw in the high-ceilinged, large-roomed property an opportunity to make it her own. First on the list? A new kitchen. “I’m always being invited to dinner parties and the like, and I’ve never had a good enough set up to be able to repay the favour. It’s been frustrating. Everyone knows the kitchen is the heart of the home, certainly the social heart.”

...They made good suggestions, but they also listened to my desires. When I finally saw the suggested drawings I couldn’t believe it. They exceeded my expectations massively; regarding what I thought was possible. They just...see space in a unique way. With this work, I’m going to get two rooms in my apartment ‘back’! I can’t wait!

“I’d already gone as far as speaking to some companies on the Island,” but Breeshey’s budget restrictions were such that the one drawing she did receive, while it did meet her expectations, still only made use of the existing space. Another company didn’t even bother replying to her enquiry.

And yes, happily Breeshey has been able to leave one of her three jobs!

When she spotted the feature in Gallery’s April Edition for a free £15,000 Jollygood kitchen installation, Breeshey decided she couldn’t let that opportunity slip by. Where the competition asked for photos of the existing kitchen, Breeshey recorded a video tour of her home with full commentary! “I really wanted my entry to stand out.” “On the day they were set to announce the winning entry, there was a party up north that I’d been invited to. All my friends had gone, but I was going nowhere. I sat by my computer, constantly refreshing the Facebook page with fingers crossed. When it finally showed I’d won, it was like a

dream; surreal.” Since that day it’s been a whirlwind for Breeshey. “I’ve been asking stupid questions all the time, because I want to learn; and they’ve been really good. When they looked at the space they had to work with, they saw only solutions and were clearly really thinking outside the box. They made good suggestions, but they also listened to my desires. When I finally saw the suggested drawings I couldn’t believe it. They exceeded my expectations massively; regarding what I thought was possible. They just...see space in a unique way. ITEX MAKES THE TOP FOUR AT PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS EVENT Itex Channel Islands was selected as a finalist in the Service/ Hosting Provider category at the recent Data Centre Solutions Awards. At the ceremony, held in London on 23 May, the shortlist of 11 companies was whittled down to the last four with Itex being the only Channel Islands organisation to reach the final. The Data Centre Solutions Awards reward the products, projects and services as well as honour companies and teams operating in data centre fields. The judges then selected the final four and the overall winner. AKG AWARDS RL360° AN EXTRA APPLEBY STAR FOR SERVICE SCOOPS AWARD AT HFMWEEK EUROPEAN HEDGE FUND SERVICES AWARDS 2013 Royal London 360° (RL360°), the international division of the Royal London Group, has been awarded an additional star for service in its latest full AKG report.

AKG Actuaries and Consultants specialise in the provision of ratings, information and market assistance to the financial services industry. The company’s reports are designed to provide advisers the information they need to assess the relative strengths of offshore long term insurers.

As well as retaining its overall AKG rating of B+, RL360°’s efforts in the area of service were acknowledged with an extra star, taking its service rating to four stars. The objective of AKG’s service rating is to assess the quality of an organisation’s service to the intermediary market. Criteria taken into account include: performance in surveys, awards and benchmarking exercises (external and internal), the organisation’s philosophy, service charters, the extent of investments designed to improve service, and feedback from intermediaries. The report acknowledges that RL360° has “created the platform to make service a key part of the enlarged Royal London 360° proposition for the future”. Once again, AKG notes RL360° as a “key component” within the Royal London Group. “Overall, the Royal London 360° operation appears well positioned in terms of its own capital position and strategic direction,” says the report. THE World Championship Viking Longboat Races

will celebrate their half century this month

On 15 June, thousands of people will flock to Peel to watch around 700 men and women compete in the famous Royal London 360° sponsored event. Teams of 10 will row from Peel harbour entrance, out into the bay, around a buoy and back into the harbour. Its hard work and the winners are rewarded with £500, those in second place with £250 and third with £150. There are also prizes for the slowest team (they win the wooden spoon), best fancy dress and categories that range from best insurance team to the veterans trophy. It’s this mixture of tradition and fun that makes the races a hugely popular event that dominates Peel for the day. The Longboat Races were formalised 50 years ago after starting as a challenge between the four crews that participated in the Viking Festival. The crew that landed at the beach first had the bragging rights.

Secretary of Peel Viking Longboats Jimmy Lee explained: “It became popular and was moved to the harbour so there was actually a course – from Teare’s steps down the harbour, out to the buoy in the bay and back again. That was in 1963 and the story still continues with one of the participants in the first race still competing this year.

On average 70 teams will compete in the races. “The most we’ve had is 90 in recent years and the least is 67,” said Jimmy. “This year I have sent out approximately 120 to 130 forms. “There are always people disappointed – we get lots of phone calls in the final couple of days and we end up putting people on a waiting list for the following year. There are always people badgering. “But time and tide wait for no man. That’s what stops us, the tide. That tide is the main thing, it limits you to a certain amount of teams. We time it fairly well normally, we’re tying the last boats up and they’re touching the bottom.” So what makes it such a popular event? “It’s a day out, it’s just Boat Race Day,” said Jimmy. “Some people take it extremely seriously

To celebrate 50 years of such a popular event, members of the committee are considering organising an invitational get together later in the year for some longstanding supporters. “We might do something later in the year for some of the older teams, such as the Young Vikings Again,” said Jimmy. “Perhaps something similar to an inter-pub invitational competition.” The World Championship Viking Longboat Races will be held on 15 June in Peel. The event begins at 1.15pm with the prize presentation at approximately 6.30pm. Local charities benefiting from the event are nominated by the first three teams in the Men’s, Ladies’ and Mixed competitions. Fell runners smash Race The Sun record A team of some of the best fell runners from the UK and Isle of Man smashed the course record in The Children’s Centre’s Race The Sun relay on Saturday (May 18). The event – organised by the Island’s leading charity for families and children and sponsored by Mann Made Group involves teams running a clockwise lap of the Island’s Raad ny Foillan 98 mile coastal footpath starting and finishing in Peel. There are 10 legs of the relay with teams allowed a maximum of 10 runners. Manxman Lloyd Taggart led an eight-man team which clocked 10h 14m 54s easily beating the previous record of 11h 37m 50s set by a team representing The Children’s Centre in the 2010 race. Taggart was joined by Andy Davies, Tom Beasant, Tom Edwards, Rob Little, Pete Hodges, Neil Northrop and Rhys FindlayRobinbson. All the team are elite fell runners drawn from either the Manx Fell Runners club or the Dark Peak and Mercia fell running clubs in England. The team

was carefully selected to include athletes with orienteering expertise which they used to navigate around a course that was unfamiliar to those team members from offIsland. Taggart says he was confident that the squad would break the record, but even he was surprised by the margin by which it was broken. Another record was broken with ‘Running Sucks’, the second all women’s team to ever enter the race smashed the original all women’s team record by 1 hour 28 minutes, in a total of 15 hours 12 minutes. They were the only all women’s team to enter this year and were sponsored by Creechurch Capital. Race the Sun is so named because the main aim for teams is to complete the course before the sun sets in Peel. Mark Eastham, Adventure Events Fundraising Co-ordinator at The Children’s Centre, congratulated the winners and thanked all of the 27 team that took part, plus sponsors Mann Made Group and the Up & Running store which provided various prizes.

Now in its sixth year the event has raised over £50,000 with money going directly to support vulnerable children and young people in the Isle of Man through The Children’s Centre’s Mobex project. Swimmer Charlotte Atkinson has her sights fixed on representing Team Isle of Man at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She’s already achieved a great deal, as this Athlete Profile shows, but the Games are a key focus for her as the countdown to the next ‘friendly games’ gathers pace. She is benefiting from the Glasgow 2014 Support Programme, funded by the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association, which provides competitors with expert advice and support from the Isle of Man Sport Institute. Sporting achievements At the 2012 Isle of Man Bank Sports Awards Charlotte was named Isle of Man Under 21 Sportswoman of the Year and was also delighted to be named one of the first recipients of a Cavendish Scholarship. In 2011 she won two gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the Island Games, and a few months later at the Commonwealth Youth Games she reached four finals with her highest placing being fifth in the 400m Individual Medley. 2012 was a fantastic year for Charlotte as she set 69 new individual Island records, in all strokes except breaststroke. In the same year she

also achieved No.1 spot in the UK National Short Course rankings for 15-year-old girls in seven different Freestyle and Butterfly events, and seventh in the European Short Course rankings for 15/16 year old girls in 1500m Freestyle. Currently she has 20 top ten National rankings, being No.1 in the short-course rankings in 1500m Freestyle. In June 2012 she competed in the ASA National Championships, which were the second-round Olympic selection trials, and got to meet Olympic star Rebecca Adlington. In March 2013 she competed in the British Gas International Meet which was amazing because it included Olympians, World and European Champions. So far she has achieved consideration times for the Commonwealth Games 2014 in 12 different events. These events are in Freestyle, Butterfly, Backstroke and Individual Medley and range in distance from 50m to 800m. Charlotte has also achieved consideration times for the Island Games 2013 in 15 different events. Target events for Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Charlotte says: “I enjoy competing in each of the different events, but my main targets would be butterfly, individual medley and freestyle races.” Aims for 2013 “One of my aims for 2013 is to do well at the Island Games being held in Bermuda in

Being on the Support Programme means I have use of all the facilities provided at the Isle of Man Sport Institute. All of the services available are excellent and essential in helping athletes prepare for major events.” The Glasgow 2014 Support Programme, funded by the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association, allows competitors aiming to represent the Island at the Games to receive expert advice and support from the Isle of Man Sport Institute. What do the Commonwealth Games mean to you? “It would be brilliant to be part of the Commonwealth Games, especially as many of the big names from the London 2012 Olympics will be competing,” says Charlotte. “I am sure the atmosphere will be electric, and support from the home crowd should be amazing. Taking part in the Commonwealth Games would be the highlight of my swimming career so far, as it is the highest profile event in which Manx athletes can represent the Island. I am particularly excited because the event will be televised, and it will be fantastic for everyone at home to be able to watch our athletes competing. I am sure the opening and closing ceremonies will be brilliant, and it will be wonderful to watch our team parading with the Manx flag. I know the support on the Island will be fantastic, and it would be amazing if Team Isle of Man could bring home some medals. I would like to thank Sport Aid, the Cavendish Scholarship and Gubay Scholarship for Sporting Achievement for their support in helping me achieve my success so far.”

Turbo and Turbo S added to Porsche 911 range The hottest news from the world of motoring. This week: Turbo and Turbo S added to Porsche 911 range. As if the 911 Carrera S wasn’t fast enough, Porsche has announced details of the Turbo and Turbo S models, ahead of first deliveries in the UK later this year. As with previous iterations the 911 Turbo has four-wheel drive as standard, although the design is new for this 991-series car and includes active rear steering also destined for the 911 GT3. Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active anti-roll system is offered for the first time on the 911 Turbo models, and comes as standard on the 911 Turbo S, together with the Sport Chrono Package Plus incorporating dynamic engine mounts, and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB). These are also available as an option on the 911 Turbo. Both the Turbo and Turbo S are powered by a 3.8-litre flat six, with twin turbochargers and direct injection to produce 512bhp in the Turbo and a staggering 552bhp in the Turbo S. Mated to the seven-speed dual clutch PDK gearbox as standard, both the Turbo and Turbo S also have stop/start fitted, which helps both models claim an impressive 29.1mpg combined. Even more incredible are the performance figures. Fitted with the optional Sport Chrono package, the Turbo can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds, faster than the previous 911 Turbo S. Meanwhile, the new 911 Turbo S despatches the sprint to 62mph in just 3.1 seconds. The car’s top speed is 197mph. The new 911 Turbo models are available to order now from Porsche Centres in the UK and Ireland. The Turbo is priced from £118,349 and the Turbo S from £140,852. First right-hand drive deliveries will arrive in September 2013.

Volkswagen adds Bluemotion to Golf range New to the impressive Volkswagen Golf range is the highly efficient BlueMotion model, offering a claimed fuel economy of 88.3mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 85g/km, while retaining the refinement and comfort of the standard car. With its 50-litre fuel tank and 88.3mpg fuel consumption, the new Golf BlueMotion has a theoretical range of 970 miles. Assuming an average annual driving distance of under 10,000 miles, most drivers will only have to refuel 10 times a year, and thanks to band A Vehicle Excise Duty there is no tax to pay. The reduction in the car’s combined fuel consumption has been achieved through lightweight design (including 26kg less weight in the running gear and 37kg less in the body), engine-related modifications and a collection of other measures. These include super low rolling resistance tyres with higher air pressure, longer gear ratios (six-speed manual gearbox), the Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems that are standard in all new Golfs, plus specific aerodynamic modifications. At the heart of the new Golf BlueMotion is a 1.6-litre 110 PS common rail TDI from the new EA288 engine series (producing 5 PS more power than in non-BlueMotion models). The four-cylinder 16-valve unit develops its maximum torque of 250Nm from just 1,500rpm up to 3,000rpm. Prices for the new Golf BlueMotion start at £20,335 (RRP OTR) for the three-door and rise to £20,990 for the five-door, with specification based on that of the standard Golf S - see price list for full details. Volkswagen Retailers are taking orders for the new Golf BlueMotion now, with the first deliveries expected in August.

Volvo updates entire range for 2014 Six new Volvo models featuring revised styling, additional equipment and reduced CO2 emissions are set to arrive at dealerships nationwide.

One of the many things that mp3 technology ruined (aside from the entire global music industry and the creeping acceptance of sub-par sound quality) was the romantic tradition of exchanging cassette mixtapes with the guy/girl you fancy. As a romantic gesture, it was perfect and practical – a calling card to demonstrate how cool and hip you are (you’d stick a couple of My Bloody Valentine B-sides that you never listened to to demonstrate this) and a chance to show your sensitive side by using the poetry and musical genius of others. Or, being less cynical, it was just a nice way to get to know each other and also showed that you’d put time and thought in; picking out your tracks and actually recording them to cassette would take a good few hours. Designed by Berlin-based illustrator and designer Axel Pfaender, the Berlin Boombox is yet another startup crowdfunded through Kickstarter.com and is an incredibly cool alternative to your typical mp3 player docking station. It comes as a kit containing a corrugated cardboard shell and speakers, which you assemble yourself – apparently it takes around 15 minutes to build and even the intensely stupid can do it – and then you’re ready to plug in your iPod. As well as giving your mp3 player a much bigger sound (and you can download an app to further optimise your audio output), it’s got a neat, minimalist look to it, and you’ll look proper cool walking down the street with it on your shoulder, blasting out a bit of Grandmaster Flash. Back in the early-to-mid eighties, everyone wanted to own either a Spectrum ZX or a Commodore 64. They were the cutting-edge of home computing; the first steps into the brave new digital age for the masses.
