T
he fact is, people get stuff wrong all the time; there’s always someone sitting in the wrong plane seat (the dual choice of A or B, window or aisle is just so confusing!) there’s always one mum who brings her kid to the party an hour after it started, a waiter who brings garlic chips instead of polenta (unforgivable), a barman who puts lemon in your gin instead of cucumber (really??), or a friend who somehow manages to spell your name wrong for about 15 years. Obviously, our response to all of these situations is to feign humour and take full responsibility. “Excuse me, I’m so sorry but I think you might be, maybe, in my seat.” You will probably throw in a nervous apologetic laugh just to convey that it really is entirely your fault, not theirs, for this embarrassing mishap. However, there are some mistakes that simply must be corrected. As a reader of Gallery we already know that you have certain values, a modicum of integrity, charisma and obviously charm so we know you’ll agree when we state; we are not actually American people so can we please stop American culture sliding into our subconscious. When we watch TV it is a new SERIES, not a season. It is not related to the four divisions of the year. When we go upstairs, we go in a lift, not an elevator, we go on holiday, not vacation, we go to the toilet, not the bathroom, we throw rubbish in the bin, not trash and we stand in orderly queues, not lines, when we are accepting bad customer service, while eating sweets, not candy. I mean, never let it be said that we are anti-inclusivity, just ask any Brexiteer, but we have to hold onto our own vocabulary if we are to know who we are and what our identity means! I’m glad we got that cleared up, rest assured we will be sticking to the usual winning formula that makes Gallery so wonderful, not awesome, this May. If you do feel that you still need an outlet for your American jargon, Richard Hall’s Hoedown (social gathering) takes place on May 24th and of course the TT swings back into action this month and will of course drown out most of the noise in your head anyway. THE GUILD
//DOUGLAS// The Guild – otherwise known as the Manx Music Festival, or, to give it its full name, The Manx Competitive Music, Speech and Dance Festival – got underway on 27 April with the usual array of classes – including this year for the first time, an adult Stand Up comedy class, new News Reading classes and a new adult group dance class. The Cleveland Medal competition is on 4 May, with the winners of the six solo classes competing for this prestigious award. The Isle of Man has very strong musical traditions and since 1892, when it was formed, The Guild through its competitive nature, has provided motivation to improve, initially for choirs, followed by solo singing and later to a wide range of music, spoken word and dance. The full programme is available at www.manxmusicfestival.org– although the Cleveland medal evening usually sells out long in advance, you may still be able to buy tickets for other classes from www.villagaiety.com The Guild is sponsored by Dandara Ltd.

This means there will be even more opportunities to buy work from some of the best, and bestknown, local artists. Curator Julie AshbySmyth will be posting more information, and photos, on the gallery’s facebook page, so look there for updates and opening hours.
Pilates founder Joseph Pilates developed his exercise method whilst interned on the Isle of Man, so it is particularly appropriate that the Island should celebrate him in this way.

NEW SEASON RESOLUTIONS: TIME TO TAKE THE PRESSURE OUT OF LIFE If the clocks can change then so the hell can you. Words: Clare Bowie
Say no to peer pressure when your seven year old kid’s homework is to make an elaborate 3D model of a Viking ship. Let the child actuallycomplete this project themselves and hold your head up high when you send that childminder in with the finished result.
Pay someone else so you never again have to do the school run, no more talking to mothers, looking at mothers or listening to mothers. You can now be exempt from a parallel universe of neurosis and obsessive reading level conjecture.
Get that beach body for the summer. Plan a really cold trip somewhere like Iceland, where the beaches are all freezing and you can wear whatever the heck you want. Problem solved, that beach is never going to even see your body.

Tell your friends that they can’t some round anymore because the effort of tidying up your house and pouring the wine and opening crisps is just too much. Just meet in the pub like normal people instead of the rigid social cycle that you seemed to have found yourself in because someone suggested a social rota once.
Let go of all your old grudges and unresolved feelings towards friends and siblings, those dysfunctional people helped make you the bitter and resentful person that you are today. It’s time to own it, because, realistically, it’s a bit late in the day to change and optimism is totally overrated anyway.
Buy the kids more ipads and phones. It’s the only way to achieve a peaceful fam situation. No need to monitor social media or set parental controls, what’s the worst that can happen? Plus, that slime is not going to make itself. Think of all the free time you will have to blitz through all that Netflix binging you’ve missed while you’ve been spending quality time with your nearest and dearest. It’s so obvious really!
No longer listen to any unwanted advice about parenting, de-cluttering your house, how much caffeine you can drink, how many units of alcohol you should have, how many date nights you should be going on, the importance of farrow and ball downpipe accents, a blue kitchen and afaw berber style rug. It’s time to work this stuff out for yourself. #instagramisnotreal
Start ghosting any friends who use the words, social rota.
Live a little. Go on, you deserve some of this self care stuff. Buy something ridiculously expensive that you’ve always wanted. No more hand wringing or guilt, just go ahead and buy it, you won’t regret it. And it won’t kill the kids to go without new schools shoes for one measly year. It never did those geishas any harm!
Learn to lie a little better. Honesty is not really the best policy, just tell people what they want to hear and I swear life will be easier. Play the game people. Tell your partner they look great and their jokes are hilarious, tell your kids they are totally amazing and exceptional (I know!) and tell your boss that you feel really fired up, raring to go and your mantra is, “one team, one vision”. Average manners and good lies cost nothing. You are so welcome!

ISLE OF MAN STEAM PACKET COMPANY TO SPONSOR 2019 NOBLE’S PARK FUN DAY The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is to sponsor Douglas Borough Council’s Noble’s Park Fun Day on Saturday August 3rd.
‘Thanks to the Steam Packet Company and the hard work of our officers and staff the enhanced format of this year’s Fun Day will ensure a truly memorable family day out.’
Regeneration and community committee chairman Stephen Pitts said: ‘We are very grateful to the Steam Packet Company for their support of the 2019 Fun Day. This partnership is especially welcome this year as their sponsorship will contribute to the council’s plans to expand the range of attractions of this perennially popular family event, given that we are unable to stage the Douglas Carnival while work to regenerate Douglas promenade proceeds.
Isle of Man Steam Packet Company chief executive Mark Woodward said: ‘The Noble’s Park Fun Day attracts people from all over the island and is a really enjoyable community event. We are pleased to support it and look forward to the festivities.’ Noble’s Park Fun Day is on Saturday August 3 from 1 to 5pm. For more information contact Christina Cullen, ccullen@douglas.gov.im, 696311.
£8 MILLION AWARDED TO GOOD CAUSES AND COMMUNITY PROJECTS ON OUR ISLAND Over the past 30 years more than £8 million has been awarded to Isle of Manbased community projects, initiatives and organisations by Manx Lottery Trust.
Each year the charity, a delegated partner of The National Lottery Community Fund, supports as many as 60 schemes in the Isle of Man, awarding financial grants for the benefit of local people in the community. The Trustees meet multiple times a year to consider funding applications, making sure to carefully research and discuss each submission fairly and strategically, with the aim of supporting as many deserving causes throughout the Island as possible. Throughout 2019 the Manx Lottery Trust

is inviting applications from charities and organisations for projects across the Island. Grants have helped fund kit and equipment for Special Olympics Isle of Man ahead of their visit to the 2015 Special Olympics World Sumer Games, a new grandstand for the Southern 100 Club, a new carriage for Manx Carriage Driving for the Disabled, the improvement and development of the pipe organ in St German’s Cathedral in Peel and so much more. BOWLING CLUB RECEIVES MANX TELECOM IT’S OUR COMMUNITY GRANT
North Ramsey Bowling Club is offering more sessions to encourage young players to take up the sport, thanks to a donation from the Manx Telecom It’s Our Community scheme. Twelve sets of junior bowls have been purchased with a grant from the scheme, and the new equipment means club coaches can organise more taster sessions for children aged six to 14. Gary Lenton, Chairman, North Ramsey Bowling Club, said: “For the game of bowls to flourish it is vital to grow a pool of junior players as these are the life blood of our sport. North Ramsey Bowling Club has a thriving junior section, but to attract more youngsters to the game we need to provide additional equipment tailored to their needs. The Manx Telecom It’s Our Community grant has provided us with the opportunity to purchase a further 12 sets of junior bowls which will enable us to offer more interested youngsters from the local community the chance to learn, and hopefully love, our sport.” The club is already putting the new bowls to good use and has held four taster sessions recently. They are also planning to run a junior summer holiday club – dates will be announced in due course. The club was one of 14 organisations that received 2018 Manx Telecom It’s Our Community grants. The annual scheme is open to Isle of Man charities, sports clubs, schools, voluntary or community groups. Grants ranging from £100 to £1,000 are awarded for a wide range of purposes. Applications for the 2019 scheme can be made towards the end of the summer – follow Manx Telecom’s Facebook page for details later in the year. ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

Bobbie
Meet Bobbie – a handsome and unusually coloured Jack Russell. He came to us as a stray from Peel and so we’re not sure of his age, but we think he’s around eight or nine years old. He can be a bit nervous when he first meets people, but he soon comes out of his shell. He’s great fun to take out on walks, and he loves to explore and sniff out new smells.
After he’s stretched his legs, he’s perfectly content to curl up in his bed and snooze, probably dreaming of the rabbit that got away! Bobbie is generally good with other dogs, and so the Kennels team would be happy to introduce him to a potential new owner’s existing dog. Because we don’t know much about Bobbie’s background we are happy to consider a range of rehoming situations, but it’s probably best that he isn’t rehomed with young children.
Pet Question: Archie Breed? King Charles Cavalier Age? 5 Likes? food and snuggles on the sofa Dislikes? Surprisingly chips! If human what would you be? A King or a prince! Favourite food? Chicken Why do you love your human? Because they let me sleep on the sofa If you had one wish what would you wish for? my humans to give me an endless supply of chicken! Interesting fact: I snore like a human!!
Yukio Two-year-old Yukio came from a farm, and is used to being around other cats – in fact, she seems much happier when she’s in the company of fellow felines. She’s a bit shy when she’s first approached, although she soon starts to purr when she’s stroked, and so she needs a patient and understanding new owner who will continue to develop her confidence. One of her eyes is cloudy as a result of a past infection, and we think she is completely blind in it, but it doesn’t cause her any pain and it isn’t contagious. It simply makes her more unique! However, it might limit her capacity to be safe around passing vehicles and so she needs a new home that is well away from main roads. Yukio is a perfect example of a young cat who has had limited oneto-one human interaction in her early years, but she’s been quick to learn that she can trust people and enjoy their company. IOM BLOODHOUNDS HUNT BALL Isle of Man Bloodhounds Hunt Ball was recently held at the Shearwater Suite in the Palace Hotel celebrating the end of the 2018/2019 season. Guests started the evening with champagne reception and then enjoyed an excellent buffet meal. During the evening Simon Riggall (Hunt Master) greeted and thanked all for attending. He expressed his appreciation on behalf of the Hunt to all the landlords and farmers who agreed to have the hunt cross their land. This year, along with previously used ground and established relationships, we were very pleased to have been allowed new land and be introduced to new landowners & farmers to whom we hope to have a good relationship, therefore extending the acreage throughout the Island to the hunt meets. Without naming all who contribute to the organisation of the Hunt, Simon then thanked his wife Caroline for her enduring support, the staff of Great Meadow, Heather Charmer who organises and liaises with everyone for the meets and brought together the Ball event, the runners Dave Cain and Andrew Wright who provide the scent for the hounds to follow, volunteers who help on the day, followers and supporters. He also thanked the photographers who spend many hours taking photographs so that the riders can

enjoy, relive many of the fences & obstacles on the lines and enjoyment of the day long after the event. In particular Simon thanked Elaine Dewhirst for also producing the rolling slideshow of photographs for the evening and both Elaine & Bill Callow for staging a photo-shoot for those wanting a photo on the evening. Special mention was given to Laura Mylchreest and Tim Sowerby for their services to the hunt and they were both awarded much coveted “buttons”. Congratulations. The hunting horn blowing contest – each table nominated a person to represent their table to blow the horn with quite differing results however the winner blowing the finest notes was Steve Wade. The raffle was well supported by many of our local businesses and donations from supporters. There is also a traditional raffle, to win a wheelbarrow! It just happens to be loaded with a selection of drink. Music brought many to the dance floor to complete the evening. Review of the season – The first social meet in September courtesy of Stephen and Aileen Broad brought together keen riders and fresh horses which were treated to one of the lines which went along Smeale beach and into the sea. Operational Excellence in Insurance
I
nsurers are under more pressure than ever to effectively manage their current operating expense environment. Persistent low investment returns, everincreasing competitive pressures and the growing demands of regulation have hampered the industry’s ability to grow revenue faster than the rate of operating costs. In order to better understand the current environment, KPMG and ACORD, a non-profit standards development organization, recently completed a survey focused on the challenges and opportunities insurers face with respect to improving operational excellence. Key findings from the survey include: n The majority of carriers say they are actively working on improving operational excellence. n However, over half of them are behind target. n There is limited integration of technology platforms across functions, including underwriting, distribution and product operations. n A lack of process standardization and strategic vision are the primary obstacles to future transformation efforts. The resulting report, Operational excellence in insurance: Performance, digital and customer experience, highlights the need for senior leaders across the strategy, technology and operations areas of insurance organizations to carefully consider several initiatives and transformations critical to operational excellence. By focusing on some of the key dimensions of the business, leaders can identify the core cost drivers and take steps to effectively manage costs in a sustainable manner. ‘The survey responses make clear that the majority of these organisations are falling behind in their quest to improve operational efficiency, and that a lack of process standardisation and strategic vision is the primary obstacle to future transformation efforts’, commented Simon Nicholas, Partner at KPMG Isle of Man.
We are really excited by the results and believe this will be an area that will transform businesses.’
‘We are therefore assisting C-Suite and senior leaders to carefully consider several approaches to correct these deficiencies, that include operating model and process redesign, legacy systems and alterative sourcing. Finally, intelligent automation and Robotic Process Automation are solutions we have developed internally, on the island, making systems run more efficiently by automating manual non-value adding tasks and enabling systems to talk to each other with quick, low cost ‘bots’. We are really excited by the results and believe this will be an area that will transform businesses.’
Survey results indicate that, although 94 percent of carriers say they are actively working on improving operational efficiency, 55 percent say they are behind target. In addition, most respondents reported only limited integration of their technology platforms across functions, including underwriting, distribution and product operations - functional areas to achieving operational efficiency. The report is available to download from the KPMG Isle of Man website www.kpmg.co.im

Manx Telecom to acquire Synapse360 in deal which will strengthen the Island’s IT and telecoms sector
M
anx Telecom is to buy Synapse360, an IT infrastructure and managed services provider which operates in both the Isle of Man and the UK. Synapse360, which is privately owned, was established in 1999 and currently employs just under 40 staff based in Douglas and Manchester. The company will continue to operate under the Synapse360 brand and under the direction of its existing management team, including founding Managing Director, Colin Sheard. Commenting on the acquisition, Gary Lamb, Manx Telecom CEO, said, “This acquisition makes sense from every angle. The ‘fit’ between both companies is an excellent one, each having complementary skills and expertise, plus a shared vision of the future. It also comes at the right time as we both look for continued growth in the fast-developing B2B managed services sector in the UK and on the Isle of Man. Synapse360 specialises in IT-oriented managed and Cloud based services and this, when allied to Manx Telecom’s considerable capabilities in traditional telecommunications, data centre operations and network-oriented managed services, will perfectly position both companies to take advantage of areas of undoubted growth for the future.” While Synapse360 will continue to operate as an independent company, it’s anticipated that, where appropriate, the two companies will share skills and expertise in

order to strengthen each other’s offering in crucial areas of potential growth for both businesses. Responding, Synapse360 Managing Director, Colin Sheard, said, “I’m delighted that Synapse360 is joining the wider Manx Telecom group. Since its foundation some 20 years ago Synapse360 has grown organically, gradually adding to our skills and expertise and growing our customer base, and I’m convinced that this is the
natural and very positive next stage in our development. Manx Telecom’s ownership will underpin our ability to provide our current range of products and services, and in the long run the backing of a larger entity such as Manx Telecom will provide capital and other resources which will enable Synapse360 to widen its products and services portfolio, giving our customers both on the Island and in the UK even more choice.”

in the region to the fore, the event, held at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate celebrates the diverse achievements of entrepreneurial and inspiring business leaders. Awards ranged from ‘Young Director of the Year’ to ‘Director of the Year Award – Corporate Social Responsibility’. IS YOUR OFFICE ENVIRONMENT RIGHT FOR YOU? Man/woman cannot live on artificial light and synthetic machine coffee alone, so the saying (kind of) goes.
And yet here many of us are, required to sit in an office day after day in order to earn our crust. Well, the good news is, with some little tweaks to your environment and your routine, office life can be vastly improved. Here are our top 10 simple tips to improve your wellbeing and to make office life work better for you. Who knows, perhaps they might even have a positive effect on your productivity?
32
agenda
1. STAY HYDRATED– your brain function is better when you’re hydrated. Since your brain is mostly water, you’ll improve your concentration, memory, your mood and will reduce stress. All of these things are surely going to make your life much, much easier during a day at the office? 2. KEEP IMPORTANT THINGS WITHIN ARM’S REACH– make life easier for yourself because, why not? If you regularly use post-it notes, a certain file or a stapler, why hide it away in the very bottom of your drawer? It just adds to irritation and eats up your time. Minimal effort for maximum return all the way. 3. PERSONALISE YOUR SPACE– you put photos up at home to remind yourself of good times and loved ones so why not do the same at work? After all you’re there for a while. Being able to decorate our workspace increases our sense of autonomy and therefore our happiness. ON THE AGENDA
+ A
4. MAINTAIN A SOURCE OF DAYLIGHT– okay, you may have to sit where you’re put but, where choice is possible, head for the desk nearest the window. Anecdotally, workers who have a decent view of trees and grass during the day take fewer sick days. 5. KEEP A POT PLANT– if you can’t be outside communing with nature and lowering your blood pressure, then bring a bit of nature inside. Plus plants create cleaner air which inevitably reduces sickness and therefore absence rates. 6. TAKE A FIVE-MINUTE WALK – taking an active break will stimulate your brain and help you recharge for your next work sprint. Plus, physical exercise releases endorphins which help you feel good, decrease stress and regulate your mood. All amazing for work productivity.
OFFICE ENVIRONMENT
7. TALK TO REAL PEOPLE– don’t forget, those people who sit on the other side of the room to you will also respond if you talk to them face-to-face. So, why not eschew the email from time to time in favour of hopping out from behind your screen and taking a short walk to their desk to have a chat. It’s good to talk.
8. DO IMPORTANT THINKING OUTSIDE– high ceilings have been shown to aid creativity and there’s no higher ceiling than in the great outdoors. Take that inspiration from TV show The West Wing and go for a walking meeting, except unlike Jed Bartlett and his staff, don’t walk around and around the corridors, get outside and breathe deep. 9. NATURE SOUNDS– bear with us on this one, it’s a bit Californian. If you can’t get outside for a walking meeting or you really do have to stay at your desk, why not try listening to an app that delivers the sounds of nature directly into your ears? There’s an app for everything these days – you could try Calm or Noisli. 10. MINIMALIST WORK ZONE– okay, so you have the important things within arm’s reach. Now get rid of the rest of it. Channel Marie Kondo and bin anything that doesn’t ‘spark joy’ or, perhaps in language closer to that used in the average office, bin anything that is not of immediate use in your working day. Cluttered desk, cluttered mind.

ON THE AGENDA
ELSwere joined by friends from Production Services Ireland, UK lighting rental firm HSL Group, KV2 Audio and GDS who have all supplied the business with innovative, high quality solutions enabling ELS to deliver events with a production value on par with world leading suppliers. Justin McMullin commented: “We have and will continue to invest a huge amount of our profits into the continued expansion of our equipment portfolio. It’s imperative that we try and stay ahead of the game and have the latest and most up-to-date event tech available on Island for our evergrowing event market. Our new facility allows us to finally show off some of our new toys to prospective clients and also enhances our crew’s operational knowledge of the equipment as they can get hands on it more often and keep their technical skills up. It’s a fantastic new facility and we have some really exciting new plans in the pipeline”. At a private event on Friday at their new facility, over 100 invited guests enjoyed the sounds of up and coming singer songwriter Mae Challis, whose band made their debut at the event. The band features Mark Brabbs on drums, Robbie Sampson on electric guitar and Simon Sayle on acoustic guitar and vocals. The demonstration studio was opened to the public on Saturday 30thMarch with an Open Day which saw local talent Glory Years, Hamish Faragher and The Tides use the facilities. Justin added:
“The demonstration studio is now operational and will be used for a whole host of planned projects. We’ve already had Bloom creative in the studio shooting a music video for local band “Glory Years”. It’s a great space and the fact that we already have an abundance of lighting and sound kit means that Producers and artists don’t need to hire in additional equipment”. I’d like to thank Simon and his team at HSL, Richard and all of his team at GDS and also Tom at KV2 Audio for their continued support and for helping make a launch that little bit more special. RIBA RECOGNITION FOR DOUGLAS MARKET HALL REFURBISHMENT
Words: Suzy Holland Images: Exterior of Rose Cottage horncastle:thomas, all others by Patricia Tutt
L
ocal architects horncastle:thomas submitted the recent Market Hall re-development for the prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) North West Awards last month and are delighted that it has been shortlisted alongside just 10 other projects in the region. To top things off, RIBA believes this is the first time a Manx practice has been featured on the shortlist for one of these Awards. “Market Hill Properties Ltd enlisted Brinkworth Design to work on the concept design” architect KarenHorncastle says, “and we were appointed to work alongside them on the detailed design, to submit the planning, registered building and building control applications and to work through the construction phase of the project. The end result has been so successful that we felt it could compete with the best UK

projects and decided to enter it for the RIBA Awards. It’s fantastic to have the work of the whole team recognised in this way.” Built in 1899, Market Hall is a beautiful Victorian building on the corner of North Quay and Market Hill. The property was Registered in recognition of its importance architecturally, historically and to the local townscape, however, over the years the interior of the building had been altered to fit its various purposes with windows obscured and separate rooms and market stalls constructed. Now, instead of being dark, dingy and almost empty, the building takes full advantage of the light-filled quayside site and has been reinvigorated with a new purpose: retail and workshop space for cycling specialists Bikestyle and a coffee shop run by Island favourites, Noa Bakehouse. The 1990s perimeter stalls have ON THE AGENDA
been removed and the obscured glazing replaced, revealing the interior space and reconnecting it to the quayside. The historic fabric of the building has been conserved and a new L-shaped mezzanine conceived to accommodate the kitchen, servery and bike workshop below additional retail space and consultation rooms. The original iron structure which runs the length of the building is celebrated by the new design andMartyn Thomas of horncastle:thomas told me more about how this was achieved: “The palette is simple, with Douglas Fir plywood used as the main cladding to the new structure so these parts of the building are distinct and complement the building’s best features.” It really has been a meeting of minds. Brinkworth are an established international design company known for their cutting edge retail design and, particularly relevant for the Market Hall, have a long-standing collaboration with cycle clothing brand Rapha. Once permissions were granted in March 2018, horncastle:thomas worked closely with local construction company Ash Developments to turn the designs into reality. Brinkworth’s design for Bikestyle was as a fully functional cycling hub with workshop, retail space, physiotherapy consultation rooms and what will eventually be facilities for the much vaunted Ride to Work scheme. So when Miles and Pippa Pettit of Noa signed on the dotted line in 2018, the collaboration between designers, architects, construction experts, retailers and the Island’s best loved artisan café was complete, and the Market Hall opened for business in January this year. “Projects like this, involving so many specialisations with their own ideas, work best when everyone shares the same end vision,” continues Karen. “The space needed to be practical for all the end users, whether they are a cyclist or just a coffee lover, but also true to its Victorian history. For the project to be shortlisted for this award confirms that we’ve all done a good job.” horncastle:thomas is becoming the go-to practice for historic building projects, with Market Hall being one of several such schemes they have recently been involved with. In Castletown they are responsible for the transformation of a registered quayside BUSINESS NEWS

building to the newCosta, following a move from Manx National Heritage to protect the view of the Castle from the harbour. As well as designing a new landscaped public space in front of the building they enclosed a narrow yard with a long window enabling customers to look out over the harbour. The practice also designed the new drawbridge and shop for the Castle itself to improve accessibility and they are now working on the interior restoration of the Baillie Scott house, Thornbank, in Douglas in another collaboration with Manx National Heritage. But the firm doesn’t just work on historic buildings. Martyn Thomas again: “Our design for Rose Cottage in Lhergy Cripperty developed an idea that a new house could sit in an established streetscape, mirroring the simple singlestorey aesthetic of a Manx cottage but, as the ground falls away at the back, we were
able to provide our client with a completely modern two-storey home built on a very challenging hillside site.” Anyone with even a passing interest in architecture will know how important it is to have client and architect on the same page, but Karen and Martyn stress the need for collaborative work right across the project. At Market Hall the client’s vision and ambition for the building was crucial to its success. The project sets a new benchmark for modern design on the Island. horncastle:thomas’s unwavering belief in the importance of good modern design which is sensitive to its context, whether that be historic building, townscape or landscape, underpins their practice. Whether it’s working within the constraints of an old registered building, or designing a new one from the ground up, there is no doubt that the team at horncastle:thomas know exactly what they are doing – so if you need the skills and advice of the only Island-based RIBA shortlisted architect, you know where to turn. The Market Hall is one of two Isle of Man buildings to be shortlisted for the RIBA North West Awards: London architects Foster Lomas are also there with their Restorative Rural Retreat for Sartfell. The full list can be found at www.architecture. com/knowledge-and-resources/knowledgelanding-page/eleven-projects-shortlistedfor-riba-north-west-awards-2019. Winners will be announced on Wednesday 8 May and then will be considered for the highly coveted RIBA National Awards. agenda

The innovation and technology at the site shows the trajectory of this winery: thermo-vinification, different shaped steel tanks, premium French oak barrels, not to mention the different picking time and periods of maturation that can all be blended to make the wines we see today. Coupled with the family touch and experienced wine makers this is a great combination.
We also visited the vineyards that produce the incredible Hermandad range, the brain child of the 4th generation Falasco family. Florencia and Franco are instrumental in bringing some new, more premium, ranges to the Falasco Family traditional wines. These are superb wines which can only mean the future is bright. Their Malbec is a single vineyard wine, selected based on the terroir and microclimate in La Consulta of the Uco Valley. The blend, my particular favourite, combines Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Petit Verdot and is aged in oak barrels for 15 months so the 2017 vintage will be bottled shortly! The range will also include Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir in the future, but in the meantime the 2016 Malbec, Blend and Chardonnay are all in stock so call in to see the team.
My pick of the wines, and new in store, is the Robles Bonarda. Historically, the Bonarda was the most planted grape in Argentina and this is a great example (think red and dark fruits with great freshness and texture). This has proved
Bodega Altrecedro and Karim Mussi, Uco Valley, Mendoza Karim Mussi is a hugely respected wine maker world wide and it was such a great pleasure to personally meet him and take a tour of his incredible
winery. The location, cleanliness, Italian Architecture, historical culture yet modern style was a joy to behold. I was in awe of Karim’s knowledge, the winery and hospitality showed. That passion, inherent knowledge, old world styles from the new world married together with modern nuances make the wines incredible. The photos show my favourites. The Alandes Cabernet Franc is in the shop already and others will arrive later in the year. The Gran Reserve Malbec will not be available until 2020 but trust me - it will be worth the wait. Finca Quara, Cafayete Onward to Salta, a short flight and a 3 hour drive through some unbelievable scenery to Cafayete and more importantly Finca Quara. We have imported Quara for a number of years but visiting and staying at the winery was very special - with 280 hectares you can imagine the size! However even though a vast vineyard, Quara do not do any entry level wines, and the care and precision taken shows through. The climate is different to Mendoza and arguably not in the premium wine growing latitude, being circa 25°. However, the high altitude leads to warm days and cold nights and combined with the afternoon winds mean that this place defies the rulebooks and is a great region for a number of varietals such as the Torrontes grapes still grown on thick stemmed, pergola vines and showing unmistakeable Torrontes character to the taste. These perfect conditions mean very little intervention is required and albeit not certified, the resulting wines are arguably organic. Most praised were the Estate range Tannat and Malbec & the Single Vineyard Torrentes, Tannat and Malbec. Many of these are available in our shop today so come in and see our great range from Finca Quara with some more lines to be added.

The Lieutenant Governor, Sir Richard Gozney, and local commissioners attend a ceremony at Laxey Glen Mills celebrating the commissioning of the new packing line.
“Laxey Glen Mills produces no less than 12 varieties of flour” and exciting step for the whole team at Laxey Flour. It means that waste from the packaging process has been reduced from 15-20% to almost 0% and that production will increase significantly to fulfil demand for a more competitively priced local product of the highest quality.
The Lieutenant Governor presses the button to start the machine.
LAXEY FLOUR STEPS UP PRODUCTION WITH NEW PACKAGING MACHINE Laxey Glen Mills has invested in a brand new packing line to increase production at its 150 year old mill in Laxey.
Redesigned Laxey Flour plain flour (Flavo) bags reach the end of the packing line.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
The new machine packs an impressive 17 bags of flour every minute, increasing efficiency of production to support the mill’s new strategy to drive sales on Island. The state-of-the-art 2018 Yeni Model was installed in February by Turkish manufacturer Sagbil. It fills the paper bags with 1.5kg of flour and transports them along a conveyor belt where they are then glued, folded and sealed before being stamped with a best before date, passed through metal detection and pushed into a poly-bag ready to be shipped out by the dozen. Colin Kniveton, Chairman of Laxey Glen Mills, said “This is a very positive
“The flour mill has stood for some 150 years and this investment demonstrates that it continues to go from strength to strength today, moving forward with the times on the inside but keeping the heritage of industrial Laxey on the outside.” The Department for Enterprise supported the machine’s installation through its Financial Assistance Scheme. Commenting on their decision to support Laxey Glen Mills, the Department for Enterprise’s Enterprise Support Team said, “The Department is delighted to have supported Laxey Glen Mills with the purchase of a new packing line. We hope this investment will ensure the mill can continue to support a strong local cereal and baking industry here on the Isle of Man.” Laxey Glen Mills produces no less than 12 varieties of flour, all of which are free from UK legislated additives and produced from milling wheat grown by farm-assured farmers on the Isle of Man. This gives full traceability and provides an excellent provenance for their flours. Laxey Glen Mills became the 100th partner of UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man in 2018, its flours bear the Isle of Man Provenance logo and boast a number of Great Taste awards.

Recipes IS 2019 THE YEAR OF THE VEGAN? Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. First roast the sweet potato. Chop the sweet potatoes into 3cm chunks. Spread over a baking tray. Drizzle with one tablespoon of the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Put in the oven and bake for 25 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, peel and finely chop the red onions. Rip the stem from the chilli, cut it in half lengthways and remove the seeds, then finely chop. Peel and grate the garlic. Peel the ginger by scraping off the skin with a spoon and grate. Pluck the leaves from the coriander, put them to one side and thinly slice the stems. Roughly chop the dried apricots. Drain the chickpeas. 3. To make the tagine, place the saucepan over a medium heat and add the rest of the olive oil. Add the onions and fry for four to five minutes, stirring, until starting to soften. Add the chilli, garlic, ginger and chopped coriander stems and stir for two minutes. Add the harissa paste, ras el hanout, cumin, ground coriander and sugar and stir for one minute. Add the chopped tomatoes and water. Lower the heat and simmer for seven to nine minutes. Stir in the drained chickpeas and apricots. Put the lid on and simmer for eight to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Take the lid off the pan, taste and season. Add the coriander leaves and roasted sweet potato and stir. Reduce the heat to low and put the lid back on the pan.
ROASTED SWEET POTATO TAGINE This warming vegan dinner will feed a crowd. “Whisk away to the Middle East with this hearty tagine,” say Henry Firth and Ian Theasby - AKA vegan YouTubers, BOSH! “It’s sweet, fragrant and easy to make. You can replace the preserved lemon with the grated zest of a lemon, the juice of half a lemon and an extra pinch of salt. It’s also great with salad rather than the couscous for a lighter lunch.” Ingredients: (Serves 6) n 1kg sweet potatoes n 3tbsp olive oil n 2 medium red onions n 1 fresh red chilli n 2 garlic cloves n 6cm piece fresh ginger n 30g fresh coriander n 100g dried apricots n 2tbsp harissa paste n 2tsp ras el hanout n 2tsp ground cumin n 2tsp ground coriander

Method: 1. Cook the sushi rice following the instructions on the packet, ensuring that it is dry and sticky when cooked. 2. Put a saucepan on a medium heat. Pour in the rice vinegar, sugar and salt and heat until the sugar has dissolved. Let cool to room temperature, then pour over the cooked rice, gently stirring until all the liquid is absorbed. Spread the rice over the greased baking tray and let cool to room temperature, when it should be dry but sticky. 3. Stack the nori sheets and lay a saucer on top. Cut around it to make nori circles. Find the centre of the nori stack and cut a neat, straight slit from the centre to the outer edges. Take one circle and fashion a cone that is roughly 8cm wide at the base. Wet your finger and lightly brush along the slit to stick it in place. Put the cone in one of the muffin holes in a muffin tin. Repeat to fill all the muffin holes. 4. Wet your hands and roll a golf ballsized ball of rice. Poke a hole in the centre and pour in half a teaspoon of hoisin sauce. Pack more rice over the hole to seal in the sauce. Smooth the outside and place in one of the nori muffin cases. Repeat to fill all the cases.

Sesamo Aventura
A NEW SEASON IS ON THE HORIZON ARE THESE THE EUROPEAN THEME PARKS WHERE THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES? Half a million Brits fly to Barcelona every year and don’t see anything of the city and its famous architecture. And no, they’re not on stag dos... they’re heading straight to the No.1. leisure destination in the Mediterranean - PortAventura World. This collection of theme parks and hotels, with a water park, a beach club and new attractions every year, is second only to Disneyland Paris on the European visitor leader-board.
theme parks included in their ticket, so if you can tear yourself away from the beautiful ‘desert river’ swimming pools around the hotel, it’s a short walk across a footbridge to the main park entrance.
It has the same attention to detail as Disney, and the same focus on family - with the added benefit of the Barcelona weather.
Express means just that - no queues for any rides. This is worth its weight in frontier gold if you’ve small children with you. It also opens up so many more rides than you’d ever usually have time for, and gives you the space to watch a show and stop for lunch.
There are five themed hotels to choose from, each with pools and gardens. We’re staying in a US frontier town from the late 19th century called Sullivan City, home of Hotel Gold River. Here, visitors can sleep in the town’s ‘jail’ and eat in its ‘opera house’, while dodging sky-high cacti and jigging along to piped cowboy music. Our room is in Callaghan’s - a smart boarding house building around the central square. Hotel guests get Express passes to the
44
While you can find the usual theme-park fare of burgers and chips here, this is Spain, so we sit down to tapas and fresh seafood by the ‘harbour’. It strikes us how much has been done to make sure there is something to appeal to every member of the family - from
grandparents who can enjoy theatre shows, beautiful gardens and gentle boat rides, to teens seeking the biggest thrills on the continent, and toddlers who are so often forgotten by these kinds of attractions. With that in mind, here are the top 10 things you must do in PortAventura World... 1. Zoom through Sesame Street New for the 2019 season is Street Mission, a ‘dark ride’ on a Sesame Street taxi that sums up what PortAventura is all about. You can ride it with a one-year-old, but our teenage daughter also thinks this is one of the best experiences in the park. Put on 3D glasses and use a laser gun to shoot cookies for Cookie Monster as you zoom around a part real/part CGI Sesame Street, with enough twists, turns and fake falls to give everyone a surprise. And the biggest thrill of all? Realising you’ve beaten your dad on the cookie leader-board on the way out. 2. Accelerate to 180mph in five seconds One of the theme parks on offer is Ferrari Land, which is a smart Italian-themed collection of driving and speed-based rides. As well as sampling awesome pasta here, you must experience the Red Force - which has a minimum height requirement of 1.40metres. This vertical accelerator ride can be seen from miles around as it rises to 112metres high, and you know it’ll be fast when they hand you goggles as you climb in. Once you’ve been shot up this tower like a bullet from a gun, it’s up to gravity and the wind speed - you’ll go all the way over the top and back down or fall backwards to where you started. TRAVEL
3. Drive a Ferrari OK, not a real Ferrari. But on various simulators, you can drive a Ferrari around the world, an F1 version around Monte Carlo, and then with more competition than necessary a real-life go-cart Ferrari in a race against the kids. In Ferrari Land, there’s also a kids’ version of the Red Force accelerator and a large play area. 4. Slide down the Himalayas The Shambhala ride in the ‘China’ region of the main park is iconic among roller coaster fans. It’s the tallest in Europe at 76metres high, has the longest descent with a drop of 78metres and is still the fastest, reaching speeds of 134mph. Like climbing Everest, this is not for everyone - including me. Thankfully, there’s a mini-model of the Great Wall on which to stand and watch those much braver than yourself descend it. 5. Ride a flying fish In the area of the park for younger families, SesamoAventura - which is all Sesame Street-themed - is this seemingly innocuous ride. A major hit with us, it involves getting your own fish to steer through the water as you spin round, trying and failing to splash your siblings. In fact, much of this area designed for parents to ride with babies and toddlers appeals to our older kids. We pull our way up a tower in swinging chairs, ride the child-friendly Tami Tami roller coaster and run around the ‘magic tree’ at its centre. There’s also handy hut serving parents cafe con leche and churros. 6. Fly like a condor To be more exact, you’ll fall like a condor - dropping 86metres vertically at 100mph. Hurakan Condor is the main ride in the ‘Mexico’ area of the park, and not advisable after a taco lunch. You’ll get a good view of the whole resort on the way up, but don’t expect to see anything on the way down, as it takes just three seconds. 7. Battle the Templo del Fuego This is one of the 40 shows you can catch across the parks, from Wild West shooting stunts, to Polynesian dancing. In the Templo, which is set inside a replica Mayan pyramid, you’ll follow an explorer through a series of challenges and dodge shooting flames and unexpected explosions. 8. Hurtle down a tin mine A firm family favourite is the runway mine train called El Diablo. With just enough thrills to keep the kids happy without terrifying Mum, the Express passes mean we repeat this several times in a row, and then a few more times, just to make sure we haven’t missed any of the sharp corners.

9. Race each other in a Stampede One of the first rides built in the park more than 20 years ago, Stampida has two clickclack big dippers that ‘race’ each other. Pick a side - red or blue - and prepare to have your bones shaken as you fly over the giant wooden construction. Sometimes blue wins and sometimes red wins, but whether by design or chance, we never find out. When you emerge, there are a host of US county fair-style attractions to play on, or you can catch a cancan show. 10. Get wet without getting cold Along with the Caribe Aqua Park, there are several ‘wet’ rides in the main park: Grand Canyon Rapids, the Silver River Flume, and the water-shooting Angkor river ride, not to mention the Tutuki Splash ride through a volcano. That’s when the Spanish sunshine comes into its own, as for the first time ever, it’s actually quite a relief to cool down on one of these things. Even better, bring your swimming costume and spend some time at the resort’s Caribe Aquatic Park. It has the tallest water slide in Europe - the King Khajuna. If all this excitement gets too much, there’s a white sand lagoon where you can get your adrenaline levels back to normal on a sun lounger.

HOW TO WEAR NEON THE GROWN-UP WAY The super-bright trend isn’t just for teenagers and Kardashians. A complete counterpoint to the swathes of beige that have swept over the fashion world lately, neon has emerged from its streetwear beginnings to become one of the year’s biggest trends. The Kardashian clan have embraced the highlighter pen trend with gusto, rocking retina-searing brights from head to toe - we’re talking hair, clothes, nails, and even matching cars. Yes, really. Hazmat orange and tennis-ball yellow are popular with young fashionistas too - neon hues have taken over from millennial pink as the coolest colours to be seen in. But what if you’re not a fan of clingy cut-out minidresses and skimpy crop tops? Fear not, there is a way to wear fluoro-brights without looking like a Kylie Jenner wannabe - and the high street is here to help. Here are four ways to shop and style neon the grown-up way...
1. Think pink
There’s no such thing as a subtle neon shade, obviously, but of them all, pink is the most approachable - not least because there’s a bit of variety, from pale, washed-out pink to hottest fuchsia. One pop of pink - a lightweight sweater, for example - eases you into the trend gently. Try it with faded denim jeans, black tailored trousers or a neutral-toned slip skirt. For maximum impact, you can’t beat a sunny summer dress and there are some real stunners in the shops right now - from cool bodycon numbers to floaty frocks. There’s also lots of neon animal print around, which offers a slightly diluted way to wear the trend, and makes it easy to pair with black accessories. “Up to 2017 there was no realistic pathway for our players to play international netball,” says Team Manager Debs Evans, “so we really worked hard for months to affiliate direct as a nation as Isle of Man Netball. This affiliation means we can develop our own national squads right through the various age categories, and now we’re playing under the Manx flag!” And this national pride has translated into some spectacular successes: in 2017 the national squad – the Manx Rams came second in the Netball Europe Open Challenge in Gibraltar and last year the U17 squad came third in the U17 Open Challenge in Dublin, followed by another third in the same competition in Gibraltar in March. “To be invited to host this year’s competition is not only a welcome addition to the Manx sporting calendar, it’s also the ideal opportunity for our squad to play at an international level on home turf,” continues Debs. “To gain world ranking teams have to play eight ranked games in a two year period which is a massive commitment in both time and money, and frankly to not have to travel off the Island keeps personal and sponsors’ costs down, which is great for everyone!”

:: LIMITED-RUN FORD FIESTA ST FORD PERFORMANCE EDITION REVEALED One of Britain’s most-loved hot hatches has been enhanced with a new limited-edition guise. This is the Ford Fiesta ST Ford Performance Edition which, as the name suggests, has been treated to a full suite of upgrades from the manufacturer’s performance parts catalogue. Emblazoned in an unmissable ‘Deep Orange’ paintwork, this hot hatch is based on ST-3 trim with the Performance Pack - comprising the widely regarded Quaife limited-slip differential, launch control, and performance shift light indicators. Added to that is the introduction of 18-inch Ford Performance alloy wheels said to be seven kilograms lighter than the standard-fit items - along with a new
coilover suspension pack. This upgraded suspension has been honed on the famed Nurburgring racetrack in Germany and lowers the car by 15mm at the front and 10mm at the rear. It also has manually adjustable bump and rebound settings, allowing owners to fine-tune the driving experience. Its ST-3 roots mean the Ford Performance Edition benefits from standard-fit LED headlights plus a B&O audio system. No confirmation has been given about exactly how much the Ford Fiesta ST Ford Performance Edition will retail for when order books open in June, although the firm says it will carry a premium of “at least” £3,000 over the standard - so expect a price north of £25,450.
Deliveries are scheduled for September - and just 600 examples of the UKexclusive car will be sold.

Called the A 35 4Matic saloon, the car can deliver the same performance as its five-door stablemate, but with added practicality. Fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, it’ll go from 0-60mph in just 4.6 seconds and top out at a limited 155mph. Power is sent to the wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Mercedes-AMG claims that it’ll return up to 39.2mpg combined, and emit as low as 164g/km CO2. The A 35 saloon benefits from
a range of dynamic styling touches, including 18-inch fivespoke alloy wheels, two-part tail lamps and a new diffuser at the rear. Inside, sports seats have been fitted along with a new AMG sports steering wheel, which features an LCD display recently seen on the updated C 63. Behind the steering wheel is one part of Mercedes’ MBUX multimedia system, which combines a large central screen and another, smaller display in the place of the conventional dials. The latter can be tailored to the drivers’ preference, allowing for different displays and readouts to be displayed.
No prices for the new A35 saloon have been revealed at yet, nor a date for when it will go on sale - but expect it to arrive in showrooms in the latter half of 2019.

:: HARLEY-DAVISON UNVEILS ALL-ELECTRIC LIVEWIRE MOTORCYCLE Coming as the brand’s first electric motorcycle, the LiveWire represents a leap forward for the manufacturer, which is better known for its heavy, petrol-powered cruiser and chopper bikes. Thanks to its punchy all-electric powertrain, the LiveWire can hit 60mph in under 3.5 seconds according to the manufacturer, and features an estimated urban range of 110 miles. It also features no clutch, and therefore does not require the rider to change gears – something Harley claims is a touch which will ‘greatly
simpli[fy] [the] operation for new riders’. The LiveWire is also equipped with H-D Connect, which helps pair the rider with the bike through cloud-based services and the Harley-Davidson app. It allows the owner to see the battery charge status of the motorcycle via their smartphone, show the bike’s location and even alert the rider if it is being tampered with in some way. The app will also remind owners about service requirements.
The LiveWire is expected to cost $29,799 in the US before tax, which would put it in the region of £23,350 in the UK. It’s expected to arrive this Autumn.

BREMONT APPOINTED OFFICIAL WATCH AND TIMING PARTNER OF THE ISLE OF MAN TT, THE WORLD’S ULTIMATE ROAD RACE
56
ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE
HARDWARE
Bremont is a British company manufacturing mechanical watches in Henley-on-Thames and contains something that no comparable timepiece can match: an air of quintessential Britishness. The new Isle of Man TT mechanical timepiece is limited to just 62 pieces, marking the number of official sections on the Mountain Course. It celebrates the brave, adrenaline-seeking competitors of the fastest road race on earth. The TT Course is world famous. It is the last of the great challenges in motorsport and is the ultimate test of both man and machine. The first TT Race was held on the Isle of Man in 1907 and featured in the World Championship until 1976. This year’s event will be the 100th meeting of the world-renowned race and luxury British watch manufacturer Bremont will be its Official Watch and Timing Partner. The time trial format race sees the world’s leading road racers tackle the iconic 37.
mile TT Mountain Course that has been in use since 1911 and many of the world’s greatest motorcycle racers have raced the TT including Mike Hailwood MBE, Geoff Duke OBE, John Surtees CBE, Giacomo Agostini, Phil Read MBE and Joey Dunlop OBE. As the Official Timing Partner, Bremont has teamed up with current Senior TT champion Peter Hickman who is credited with the fastest lap ever recorded and who is sure to put the British mechanical timepieces through their paces at this most iconic of race courses. The stainless-steel case of each Bremont is made to an exceptional hardness of 2000 Vickers which is seven times that of an average steel watch case. The convex sapphire crystal is equally as hard and has nine layers of anti-reflective coating applied to both sides of the glass for increased legibility. Each Bremont watch must achieve accuracy to within - 4 and + 6 seconds per day. Bremont now finds itself in the top 10 of the world’s chronometer manufacturers. The high standard of finish and attention to detail seen in everything from the hand-cut and engraved winding rotor in the sapphire crystal case back, to the meticulous machining of the three-part Trip-Tick® cases take considerable time and skill to apply.
“The TT sits unique in global sporting events and really is a gladiatorial race where riders risk everything averaging speeds of over 130mph through country roads around the Isle of Man. I have witnessed this spectacle a number of times and the energy and excitement is absorbing as you watch this wonderful combination of engineering excellence, bravery and talent. We are honoured that the TT asked Bremont to become a partner and play our small part in the history of this illustrious event.” Giles English, Co-Founder Bremont
“I can’t wait for TT 2019 to get going, it’s going to be my 3rd year with Smiths Racing and I have a new BMW S1000RR. Having Bremont as the Official Timekeeper works brilliantly; precision engineering and accuracy is key to the TT, qualities which can be found in all of Bremont’s watch collections. Both are British brands steeped in engineering history, perfect!” Peter Hickman Current TT Senior Champion

Blink and you’ll miss it... Hurtling along the edge of stone-walled country lanes at over 200mph, the Isle of Man TT road race is probably the most dangerous thing you can do on two wheels. It takes courage, skill and precision. Something Bremont ambassador, and 2018 winner, Peter Hickman knows all about. The new Isle of Man TT mechanical timepiece is built in the UK and limited to just 62 pieces, marking the number of official sections on the Mountain Course. It celebrates the brave, adrenaline-seeking competitors of the fastest road race on earth. They say that watching a competitor at full race speed is a sight that can never be forgotten. We’d say the same about this unique British timepiece.
