Interior Design Trends: By David Lopez “As modern life gets busier and more pressured, our homes have become our sanctuaries. Centered around simplicity, serenity and seamlessness, the 2016 interior reflects our need to switch off and detox.” Ali Morris Interior Design Magazine According to most experts, 2016 design will feature warm yet subdued color palates of greys, creams, and pewters, contrasting with clean whites fused with simple geometric and balanced lines that provide a calming escape from our often chaotic day to day lives. Brightly colored and sleek accent pieces provide strong points of visual interest contrast perfectly against the neutral base. The integration of outdoor space into the home, or as a focal point from the interior, remains a desired feature for homeowners and provides a path for “connecting” with the surrounding landscape and freeing us, if only for a brief moment, from our computers, tablets, and smart-phones. While we may yearn for a brief escape from hand-held technology in our lives we certainly want the latest technology in our homes! 2016 is sure to billed as the year that “Smart Home” technology firmly took root in the American mainstream. Home automation products are entering the market that allow a new level of control for the homeowner making life in the home a truly interactive experience. A notable result of these trends is the continued influence of “mid-century modern” design elements in both new construction architecture and interior design. This style, from the late 1940’s, the 50’s, and early 60’s, and popularized in the television series “Mad Men” provides a great architectural framework to showcase today’s modern home.

This style was further developed on Florida’s west coast in the 50’s and 60’s in the designs of architects Paul Rudolph, Ralph Twitchell, among others and eventually became known as the Sarasota School of Architecture. Evidence of the current popularity of this style may be found, in and around Orlando, in the designs of noted architect Phil Kean. Currently, Kean has multiple projects under construction in the Lake Nona area and Winter Park. 1

THE TREND FOR GOURMET COFFEE

America’s obsession with coffee has a long history and the next chapter seems to be unfolding right in our own homes. The “Single-serve” revolution is upon us and it has fundamentally changed the way we get our morning cup-a-joe. It’s all about convenience, choice, and quality that has us moving from buying canned coffee by the pound to “pod” coffee by the cup. The arrival of Krups Cafepresso in the late 1980’s widely introduced us to joys of fresh brewed expresso at home…and we haven’t looked back! Today, Green Mountain Coffee Roaster’s Keurig K-cups and Starbuck’s Verismo system allows us the quality coffee experience at a fraction of the cost and without the visit to our local barista. Single-serve coffee accounted for 25% of all US coffee sales last year and, with Keurig’s patent expiring in the near future we expect this trend to increase as more systems are introduced to the market.

Cooling Coconut Cream Ingredients:

2 oz espresso or strongly brewed coffee 3 oz milk 3 oz coconut milk 1 oz simple syrup 2 cups ice

Directions:

Combine espresso and simple syrup and pour over one cup of ice. Next, combine coconut milk and milk and pour over rest of ice onto espresso. Pour slowly enough to keep the layers separate.

What is the history of the course? PW: The Golden Bear Club at Keene’s Pointe is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design course built in 1999. It is a private club managed by Integrity Golf Company and is noted for hosting the 2016 Diamond Resorts Invitational Celebrity Golf Tournament.

What is the most challenging feature that must be mastered for a good round? PW: Well, Keene’s Pointe is definitely a “shot-makers” course favoring those with good iron play. The fairways are forgiving and, while it’s not a “long” course, the fast greens call for a soft touch.

What make a round of golf there memorable?

What is the best hole and why?

PW: The course is always in pristine condition boasting what many consider to be the best greens in town. The scenery is amazing! The natural Florida-style layout of the course takes full advantage of its location along the Butler Chain of Lakes and is eminently playable for all skill levels not just low handicap golfers.

PW: To me it’s definitely the fourth hole, a short par 4 measuring 323 yards with a small green guarded by bunkers with a beautiful view of the lake behind it. The hole tests your mental game and rewards a golfer’s prowess and guts…classic Nicklaus!

M

artha’s Vineyard, a small island located just off the south coast of Cape Cod, is quintessential New England. Shingled cottages, weathered to a soft grey and accented by shutters of bright white or dark green ubiquitously dot the windswept bluffs. Lighthouses stand at the points acting as giant exclamation marks emphasizing the islands natural beauty. Stunning fall foliage of gold, red, and amber carpet the rolling interior hills of the island and provide a colorful backdrop for farms, ponds, and pastures. The Vineyard in the fall is a special place. No crowds of tourists hoping to spot celebrities. T

he recently opened 310 Nona restaurant is the newest addition to what shall surely become Orlando’s next great dining district, the Lake Nona-Narcoosee area. Building on a legacy of success first established in 1999 with the opening of 310 South Park on trendy Park Avenue in Winter Park founder JoAnne McMahon expanded with 310 Lakeside, located on picturesque Lake Eola, in 2008. Now JoAnne has brought 310’s inspired menu and upscale casual atmosphere to the Lake Nona area. When asked about the location JoAnne stated “I have been watching Lake Nona for the past eight years waiting for the right time to launch another 310. I am very excited to be part of this dynamic and energized community!” Executive Chef Tony Krueger, a Fort Myers native, oversees the menu of “New American” cuisine featuring interesting and healthy dishes artfully crafted from hand selected fresh ingredients. Popular entrees include the Stuffed Chicken Asiago with red pepper and baby spinach ($18) and a wonderful, traditional Fish & Chips of lightly battered Cod served with a tangy homemade coleslaw. ($16) Nightly specials often showcase a restaurant’s more creative side as is the case at 310 Nona where on any given evening dishes featuring more exotic game and foul such as venison are offered. On our visit we were impressed by the selection of

“Starters” that included Cold Tomato Bruschetta with a Balsamic Reduction ($8) and “Gator Tail” composed of Florida Gator Tenderloin pan fried, Francaise style, with a whole grain mustard sauce ($13).We chose the “Tuna Kobachi” ($16) which featured a generous portion of perfectly cubed sushi-grade Ahi tuna peppered with white and black sesame seeds and hints of seven spice. The plate was dotted with Sirracha and included finely sliced cucumber. Absolutely delicious! For our entrée we saved the Wild Mushroom Ravioli and the charbroiled Rib Eye with herb Craisin butter (yes…Craisin butter!) for our next visit and selected the Roasted Duck ($22). The simple yet elegant plate arrived featuring a perfectly roasted, semi de-boned, half duck atop a pillow of home-style mashed potatoes. A delicate and subtle plum sauce allowed the duck to be the star of the dish which was a welcome change from the over powering fruit reductions that so often accompany duck. Al dente broccolini rounded out this hearty classic. After dinner, or before, join the lively patrons at 310 Nona’s bar for one of their eclectic signature cocktails such as the Twin Peaks, a fantastic concoction of Hendrick’s Gin, St, Germain, agave nectar and fresh lime garnished with cucumber or perhaps a classic Moscow Mule served in a unique copper cup. JoAnne and General Manager Juan Creter have put together a winning experience for us all!
