I started interning in art galleries in 2015. Time flies, I am now working full time in an art gallery, and a few weeks ago I finally realized that if I ever want to make a bit more money, or actually much more money, then I need to start my own business. Wait, sorry. I should remove these sentences. It’s not allowed to discuss money in the art world. Well, it didn’t help until now, so let’s try talking about it. So, I was recently thinking: for what reason should I work in the art world? Do I really love art so much, that I am ready to be poor for the entirety of my life and to have almost no pension? Do I have such a pure soul? Well, no, I don’t. However, I do love art and think that art has a great potential for the world and this being based on a recent report on working artists, published by the Clark Hulings Fund (they make great podcasts too), proving that Art brings way more to society than society gives to artists. I am done with negativity and narrow minds. It’s not the art market that is small, it’s the number of ways that are allowed for artists to sell their art, it’s the percentage of permitted innovativity, sales-wise. It’s the ‘’let’s not contact this person, what is everybody else going to think if we do contact them? Will arty people avoid me forever and ever?’’. Of course, I have tried following the rules first. I have tried the usual way to network, fo example, at gallery openings. With my background and my asocial personality (I tried talking to people whom I don’t know at gallery openings, but honestly it’s not for me, it always ends up in weird weird looks — and the worst is I agree with the looks I was served.), in two years, one in Amsterdam and the other in London, I didn’t manage making so many art-related relationships, outside of work.

If it’s for work reasons, I’m at ease and can start great relationships. However, if it’s to make jokes at an opening, I feel like I’m back in high school, among all these people who just try to survive in an environment that won’t allow them to do so if they only follow the rules (hint: I didn’t enjoy high school). And rivalry never helped me making professional or friendly relationships. That’s another reason to make me start my own business. Opening my own biz gives me a great excuse to meet more artists. Artists often are the kindest people of the art world — it’s time to admit it. Several reasons come to my mind to explain it. I’m thinking maybe they are more open-minded due to their experience with creativity. But maybe it’s also caused by the art world context. They’re the ones who need people and help the most. I’ve recently heard ‘’As an artist, I need to be nice, polite, easy-going’’. Deciding to start my businesses in the art world made me wonder what it means to be an entrepreneur in the
art world, and how
do artists, the entrepreneurs in essence of the art world, get on with their business.

It’s a rhetorical question. I know how they do. And how difficult it is. I thought that I had found what I could bring to the art world: to coach artist. But it took me some research to identify that it already exists. It’s called Artist Business Coach, or creative mentors. The first title is very clear, but what I’ve seen is very much 2010. It doesn’t make much use of contemporary business speed or technology. The second title, creative mentors, involves some guru relationship that is a bit blurry to me. How does being a creative mentor take its real form? I am very curious about the process as the title sounds quite mystic. Does it mean that the artist is paying to listen to someone else’s creativity? Or is the artist listening to the coach’s critics on its art?

Of course, I am not saying that I am against creative mentors. If it exists, it means that a certain group of artists needs mentors. However, I have often seen that these kinds of critics can be done for free. So many people will be very happy to tell you what you should change about your art practice, for free. It’s actually a running joke from artists, complaining to receive too many critics in order to sell more. Therefore I am not persuaded that this is what is missing to artists. Based on discussions with artists, what rather seems to be missing, is a business mind. I have seen so many artists who don’t have a gallery and are quite lost without it. Or worse, artists with a gallery that does not correspond to the idea of a gallery they had, and not creating the hoped effects that the artists had expected from a gallery. And then, it’s the emptiness.

What do you do when you’ve been taught in art schools to make art but to leave all the other people from the art world to deal with the business part of it — and then you can’t find someone to take care of this part with the effects you expected. I’ve also seen that books on being a good entrepreneur as an artist exist. Articles on how to communicate on social media and build a community of clients buying art exist too. So how come that so many artists do not use these business books? Don’t they have access to them? Have they never googled ‘’how to sell my art?’’? Are these books presented as evil books in Art Schools, maybe? Is the idea of ‘good art being in opposition to money’ so strong? Or do they miss time? I don’t know what’s missing yet. But I want to find out and help. I guess this text is addressed to a certain kind of artists. I’m not an artist, but, I was myself ‘’raised’’ in the art world, to think that existing rules need to be followed and tabous need to be respected.

First of all, this doesn’t make sense at all as so many people have explained in all possible ways that the art world isn’t regulated as yet. So it means that the rules existing in the art world are very fragile, and based on social constructions and that these rules don’t have any weight if you wish to change them. Second of all, if you are an artist who has experience in the art world, you will maybe be interested in my point of view, only after a journey of being very tired of not selling your art via the currently allowed ways in the art world morals. If you’re not there yet, probably you’ll think that I am an external satellite to the art world whose cause is lost in the ocean of mediocre art people. That’s also fine, I’m happy to help only artists who have a positive state of mind regarding sales. However, if you are an artist who has been thinking on how to expand your career on the basis of your own skills, please follow my lead, and read my next text, in which I’ll actually give useful ideas. First thing I want to tell you, dear artists, is that one of your skills, that you were born with, and developed while at school is a basis to all great businesses: creativity! That’s to give you some motivation. So, my first idea, to help artists actually selling their work is to use my real, deep, passion: making lists. The first list I made is a list of art advisors, and art advisory firms to which from my point of view, artists who want to sell their works independently should address their portfolio, but following a specific method. In my next text (which I will publish next week or so), I will explain why I think that it is a good idea to send your work to art advisors, I will publish a list of art advisors (at the moment only the ones based in London, but there are already so many!), whose contact is available online, and I will explain how you should present your portfolio when sending it to art advisors.

The Cultural Forum Aspö is a non-profit association that was formed in 2006. The purpose of the association is to promote cultural activities on Aspö and safeguard the interest of cultural workers. The association works with a white concept of culture where creation and human development are at the center. Since its inception, we have organized the annual Culture Round, theater performances and art courses.
Culture Round The Cultural Forum Aspö organizes a well-attended cultural tour every year during the summer. Then artists and craftsmen who are in any way connected with Aspö show their art in their own studios, in their homes or at gathering places. Each year one or more guest exhibitors are also invited. The cultural tour is a bit of a folk party where, in addition to enjoying the art, you can relax with a cup of coffee or a snack and get a wonderful bike ride on the purchase. All artists and craftsmen who participate donated their winnings to the annual cultural lottery organized in conjunction with the round.
