Gallery M&Art agents history begins with a physical private gallery in Lund in 2012 and later in Ystad, Sweden that Marcus Carlsson owned for five years. Gallery worked with contemporary art and many talented artists asked about promotion because they didn’t know how to be more recognizable, to sell art-works, and to communicate with collectors and galleries. This is the starting point of his mission to help out other artists with promotion.

1. Why you start work has an artist?

Although I am not sure if the desire to create something was the real reason I became an artist, I always had the desire t o create something since I was young. It's hard to declare wh o is an artist, so I never even gave it any thought. Whenever I felt separated from art, I regarded it as a threat.

2. What do you select your subject matter?

My topics tend to be centered on topics related to society that affect the individual. We are sometimes isolated both alone and in a city of millions, sometimes misunderstood, and sometimes rewarded for what doesn't belong to us.

Through my artwork, I express this process of emotions, thouht, and thinking. In the installations, oversized or diminished symbols and objects convey this point of view. I also painted abstractly to communicate a feeling of hopelessness in the present moment.

3. How do you create one of your works/ What's unique or unusual about your technique/ process? I love to experiment with different materials, even if I make mistakes. Before I used very simple materials and have tried to make the concept and idea very clear. So most of my artworks are based on conceptual ideas and then realized. The results of these experiments can be seen in the installations, and I have been experimenting with the behavior of layered materials and their durability in painting. Today, I use expensive materials, like plexiglass and a grinder with which to draw and create the final results.

4. Did you begin with this style or was it an evolution?

For someone who has been in the art profession for almost thirty years, imagine that I haven't changed. Of course, my work has changed periodically, there have been various influences and phases in my life, and I considered myself to be the same person. INTERVIEW ARTICLE By Hoàng Minh Châu from CHAU & CO Gallery for Gallery M&Art (Sweden)

Q1:

Hoàng, can you tell me more about your background? What has motivated you to run a gallery? How did you decide to open a gallery?

I’ve always been into arts and creativity for as long as I can remember. Before embarking on this journey as a gallery founder and owner, I’ve spent 8 years working in fashion with various job roles: fashion editor, PR & communication manager, brand manager, event organizer, stylist and visual producer. I spent my earlier years studying music at Vietnam National Academy of Music but was unable to continue my musical studies in college due to some unexpected reasons and took a major in business instead. I sing, play the piano, perform occasionally and have just started writing my own songs not long ago and hope to release my debut single in a year or so. I never thought I would pursue a career in art business. It just happened and I kind of fell into it. My grandfather was a well-known art collector back in the days and I was not at all aware of it until now when he already passed away for nearly 20 years. Although I don’t paint, I remember when I was 10, I fell in love immediately with the paintings I saw (from Vietnamese translated art books for children) by iconic modern artists of the 20th century such as Joan Miró, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Henri Rousseau, Marc Chagall…As I discovered more international modern and contemporary artists later on, images of those paintings would follow me well into my late 20s when I met my ex-boyfriend who was an art dealer and founder of an art auction house. Thanks to him, I met artists, art dealers, attended art auctions, art exhibitions and started learning about Vietnamese art and paying attention to the local art scene. Although I loved what I saw, I wasn’t completely satisfied as I was still looking, from time to time, for the artworks (paintings in particular) which carry that fresh, modern, contemporary and vibrant touch that resonates so much with me on a more personal level. Every time I saw such a painting, I was thrilled and caught off guard. Connecting the dots, I realized there’s actually a gap in the local art market to fill. One thing leads to another, I was thinking about it for a long time, long enough that one day I decided I would open a gallery that showcases all the paintings I love, all the paintings that look and feel different from what you would expect from many other galleries in Hanoi, a gallery where you can find paintings by both Vietnamese and foreign artists, a gallery where you can find artworks of different sizes and materials, a gallery that carries artworks by an artist as young as 22 years old and as old as 70 years old. A gallery for true contemporary art lovers. Not another typical gallery. A gallery that surprises people!

Q2:

Who started the CHAU & CO Gallery in Hanoi, Vietnam? Is it a good place for contemporary art? Is it competitive? Challenging?

As you can guess, Chau is a person’s name and Co means company (of other people). I’m Chau and I’m the founder of Chau & Co Gallery in Hanoi. I think now is a very good time to start an art business in Vietnam. In the past few years, Vietnamese art scene has seen a great deal of exciting momentum. First is the establishment of new art institutions (auction houses, galleries, art spaces, private museums and art funds) backed by various investors, art dealers, collectors and especially international nonprofit organizations in big cities like Hanoi and Saigon. Second is the fact that several Vietnamese paintings (from the “Indochina” period) by the late artists such as Lê Phổ, Tô Ngọc Vân were fetched for over a million dollars at Christie’s Hong Kong, something quite unprecedented. Art shows, talks and workshops are frequently organized at major venues. All in all, art collecting has become a new lifestyle, especially among the elites, the connoisseurs, the riches and even young people. At the moment the market is not fiercely competitive as compared to some other cities in Asia such as Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai or even Singapore or Bangkok but there is going to be much more competition in the near future. A number of new galleries and art spaces have been launched during the past 2 years of the pandemic and there will be many more to come in just the next few months in both major cities Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Of course there are some challenges. I think particularly for contemporary art, the biggest challenge comes from art collectors. Many buyers in Vietnam still want to “play it safe” by buying only from the “Old Masters” of Vietnamese Art (during the Indochina “Đông Dương” Period) or, at least, buying from already established local artists since they believe spending money on art is an investment and therefore, become more hesitant to purchase artworks by new and young contemporary artists.

Q3:

What are the advantages of your gallery, especially in the current situation?

One of our advantages, I believe, is that we are among some of the first galleries in Hanoi at the moment to feature artworks by foreign artists. So far we have exclusively represented and non-exclusively represented artists from 13 different countries. Vietnam in general and Hanoi in particular, has become so much more diverse in the past few years. What we do with CHAU & CO Gallery is part of the various collective efforts to recognize and celebrate this social change and cultural integration. We aim to create a platform for foreign artists to showcase their talents and become an integral part of the contemporary gallerym.se

art scene in Vietnam. As a result, hoping to create a momentum and synergy for both local and foreign artists to thrive together. By featuring artworks by both local and foreign artists (based in Vietnam and from overseas), we want to offer buyers and collectors a variety and diversity of art choice that suits their budget and style. In response to the current situation of global pandemic and social distancing, after the official launch, we will be receiving visitors by appointment booking in an intimate and private setting while enhancing clients’ browsing experience through online gallery and print catalogue at the same time. We also offer a nationwide and worldwide shipping service at the client’s disposal. On top of that, I think we have a strong core team of true diversity: males and females, Vietnamese and foreigners (British and South African). 2 of us based in Hanoi, 1 based in London, 1 in Paris and 1 in Cape Town. It helps with our international approach and vision for the future. We want to build connections, networks and potential partnerships with international dealers, collectors, galleries and art spaces. We want to introduce Vietnamese contemporary art to the world and international art to Vietnamese people.

Q4:

What has been the most exciting moment in your gallery career so

far?

The whole thing has been a very exciting journey for me as a young dealer and gallerist. Every achievement or milestone comes with its own significance that empowers me to move forward and believe in myself a little bit more in this journey. But so far, these are some moments that I’ve definitely found very exciting: selling the first artwork to an overseas collector (in Canada), compiling, editing and finishing a special art book/art catalogue featuring international artists in Vietnam, working remotely with artists overseas whom I’ve never met in real life, receiving very positive response from some artists and art lovers even before the physical gallery is officially launched and most recently, seeing one of our artists being awarded an art prize in Bangkong, Thailand. So far so good!

Q5:

How do you find your artists?

I found my artists through many ways. Some of them are my friends and connections. Some I’ve known from the scene and have long admired their works before actually speaking to them. Some I found as a result of doing my online research and spending hours and hours of browsing through social media of both local and foreign artists. Some came to me, writing to me after stumbling upon our online gallery on Facebook and Instagram, saying they loved the concept, the selected artists and artworks. They wanted to work with us and I was thrilled, seeing that their artistic direction is absolutely a good fit with the gallery.

Q6:

What attracts collectors to the art CHAU & CO Gallery offer (in other words, what are your selling points)?

I actually would love think, in a nutshell, we subjects that look truly vibrant, (possibly) edgy

for the artworks to speak for themselves! But I offer buyers and collectors artworks of various different, fresh, energetic, youthful, modern, or quirky but still visually pleasing, elegant, gallerym.se

sensitive and feel overall positive! I’m a fan of rather melancholic and intense music but not a very huge fan of extremely dark and disturbing artworks. Some paintings are meant for museum display rather than putting on your walls at home I believe!

Q7:

How was the gallery able to survive in the times of Covid-19?

I feel pretty fortunate because we didn’t have to struggle through Covid-19 to “survive”. Instead we pretty much utilized this whole time to set up our business from scratch. My team and I started working on this project since early 2022 and right now we are in the last stage of its realization. Of course we’ve had our fair share of delays and hiccups here and there due to Covid but I’m happy we used our time productively and went on with all the work even during and especially during lockdown and social distancing. I’m pretty sure we will encounter real challenges after our official launch because Covid is not going away any time soon but we are 100% mentally prepared.

Q8:

What are your prognoses and plans for the post-pandemic phase?

As life begins to slowly “go back to normal” (depending on how we define “normal” here actually!), the global economy will soon pick up and of course, I believe sales in the art market worldwide will absolutely see an increase. In actual fact, the rich don’t seem to be affected at all by the pandemic when it comes to buying art. According to Forbes, “The rich are spending more than ever on art and antiques. The average spend in the first half of 2021 reached $242,000, an increase of 42% on the year before.” On a personal level, I’m confident that our gallery will also benefit from this positive transitional period, resulting in sales growth and more frequent visits from local art lovers. Once the pandemic is over, we will push forward with a number of residency programs and physical exhibitions for our artists, all those initiatives that are otherwise impossible to undertake should the pandemic persist. May be too soon for an art fair overseas but we’ll see.

What would be your advice to potential interested in purchasing their first work?

If you are contemplating buying the first artwork, it has to be something you fall in love with. Totally. And within your budget. Please forget about everything else: artist’s reputation, potential price increase, investment prospect and even how your friend, your spouse or the galley owner thinks about it. Let’s save all that for later.

What are you currently focusing on?

At the very moment, I’m focusing on completing the (physical) gallery set-up and installation for our official launch in early 2022.

To finish up, what are your hopes for the future of the gallery?

Ah, talking about the future! So many hopes and dreams for the future indeed! But I hope the gallery becomes my life-long journey. I hope we stay strong in the business for years to come, adapt to various up and coming trends in the art world (NFTs, Virtual Reality, Metaverse…you name it!) and stay relevant! And more importantly, we hope to successfully nurture budding talents and help launch careers of aspiring artists. Creating visibility and exposure for both contemporary artists and art lovers. Gaining trust from collectors and respect from critics. Expand and grow. I would love to have another CHAU & CO Gallery in a different city (or even country!). But it’s still too soon to tell. Let’s see how the future unfolds...!
