Igor Shipilin is very comfortable in his home in Crimea. There is perhaps no better living master reflecting the heart and soul of the region today. He has an uncanny ability to honestly capture a scene of everyday life amongst the ancient streets and ruins of the Crimean coast. Clearly, his paintings are realistic in subject, but impressionistic in style. Beyond these qualities, Shipilin’s technical mastery is hard to miss. He takes oft-painted mundane scenes worked by generations of painters before him and wraps them in extraordinary compositions, unique brush work and design and a wide variety of light-soaked palettes, all of which resonate with a bit of mystery, romanticism and poetry. Shipilin creates paintings that truly are “wondrous.”
“My task is simple—to convey the image of old Crimea, comfort and the warm blue sea.” - Igor Shipilin
