WINTERSCAPE 2019

Page 1

Living in the Derbyshire Peak District makes you constantly aware of the landscape and the effects that the weather has on it. You can find yourself captivated by the sun on the mist or enthralled by a storm sweeping across distant moors and edges. It is an extraordinary environment, rich in culture and history and it can often appear as primordial, delivering a powerful visual and psychological impact.

clouds had such an influence. However, while Richards’s paintings have the freshness and vitality so admired in Constable, he doesn’t always use his source material for his final works Back in the studio as the creative process of painting begins, an intuitive approach comes into play. The initial sketch could be the trigger for the painting, but it could as easily be a memory, a piece of music, an inarticulate, insubstantial feeling… Instinct and memories then guide the direction of the piece so that the finished painting becomes an expression of an inner landscape, half remembered, half felt…

MARK PRESTON I think painting is a process of not just looking but learning to see and for me it must be first hand, working directly from nature rather than from a photograph. Every now and then in a concentrated flow of working it feels as though I am tuned into nature, but it is then that I realise I am merely scratching the surface of what there is to see and learn from it. I am interested in trying to convey the subtle qualities of colour, atmosphere or light that say a certain time of day or season or weather condition. Painting En Plein air allows me to observe these elements first hand.

JOHN BAINBRIDGE The moorland of the Derbyshire Peak District provides the visual stimulus which motivates and informs my work. The rich colour and texture of the land is enhanced by a unique quality of light and the seasonal atmospherics of wind and weather. The paintings reflect the close contact I’ve had with the land through fell running in all conditions, day and night! They are created using many applications of soft glazes over expressive gestural marks. Their colour, texture and gestural timbre aim to resonate with the vitality of the land as well as the timeless sense of numinous beauty “wild” land can evoke. Dark land and diffused light are keynotes of the imagery.

KRISTAN BAGGALEY The surface of the work is all-important and he drags and cuts the material around the canvas, using forks and combs to plough the paint as a farmer may work his fields. In his technique he adds fine sand to the oil paint, which he applies with large palette knives and decorator’s brushes. Sketchbook work is all-important when considering composition and colour. Indian ink and thick graphite pencils are used in this preparatory work and the movement and action of mark making are gestures learnt for the subsequent canvas work. Kristan Baggaley believes that without a strong spiritual connection and feeling for his subject matter the work could never effectively communicate to an audience.

RICHARD BARRETT Time spent walking the land, observing, recording and sketching provide the starting point for Richard's work. The quality of light is a constant theme and it’s possible to see why Constable’s oil sketches of

JOHN PAUL COOKE As a professional artist John Paul Cooke’s love and passion is within the field of abstract art. With an unrestrictive approach he creates passionate, colourful art, derived from everyday visual experiences. A large proportion inspired by the bright Cornish light of St. Ives and the earthy tones of the Peak District near Sheffield where he grew up. The dramatic use of colour, texture and form, illustrates his desire to ‘capture the moment’ and to stimulate in the viewer an emotion or reaction. With his very distinctive style, technique and approach there emerges a carefully constructed, unique piece of art.
