BEYOND

THE GALLOWAY SCHOOL is one of the top independent schools in metro Atlanta. Think of everything you’d expect in a great school, and you’ll find that at Galloway—great instruction from highly qualified teachers, a challenging curriculum, high expectations for student achievement, a great campus with proud traditions and students who are well-prepared to head off to top-tier colleges. But at Galloway, the school culture and the student journey go beyond the ordinary independent school experience. We are committed to cultivating a love of learning in our students that will endure throughout their lives. We maintain high expectations and low anxiety.

BEYOND

Deliberate, Daring, Dynamic and Discovery are the four terms that articulate the philosophical framework for Galloway’s unique instructional model called 4D Learning. Traditional classrooms generally follow a teacher-centric model where teachers do most of the talking and students passively listen. At Galloway, we put students at the center of the learning process. Teachers provide relevant, thoughtful and engaging experiences that lead students to interact with each other, the teacher and the content. Research on the brain and learning supports this approach revealing that it leads students to gain a deeper understanding and mastery of subject matter.

DELIBERATE

We motivate students to push beyond their perceived limits through visible thinking, discussion and debate, critical reading and respectful interaction.

DARING

We encourage students and teachers to be fearless learners who can appreciate that risks and failures are important parts of the learning process.

DYNAMIC

In Galloway’s dynamic learning environment, teachers vary their teaching styles to engage all types of learners. Here, students have ownership of their education, embracing a feeling of adventure and anticipation in learning.

DISCOVERY

We foster deep learning, where students wrestle with real-world problems, and claims require well-informed support. Here, your child will discover a genuine joy for learning that will last a lifetime.

EARLY LEARNING (PRE-K – GRADE 4) Beginning with our youngest students, our Early Learning program is focused on nurturing intellect, prioritizing the creative process and encouraging relationships, all within the context of a safe, daily routine. Children are given a voice in the classroom and are encouraged to develop their independent and collaborative work and study skills. On average, each grade level is comprised of two classrooms with two teachers in each classroom. In addition to daily instruction in core subjects, the curriculum is enriched with specialist classes, out of the classroom activities and students enjoy a number of different offcampus and overnight field trips.

MIDDLE LEARNING (GRADES 5-8) As students move into Middle Learning, they experience increased opportunities and responsibilities. Students have multiple teachers and classes, including core and enrichment, and they learn valuable time management and study skills to help them navigate this new environment. Each grade level enjoys an outdoor education trip in the North Carolina mountains and an annual, weeklong topic immersion study as well as numerous off-campus field trips and community service opportunities. Beginning in the seventh grade, students have more choices available to them. They may choose from a wide variety of elective classes ranging from dance to broadcast journalism to economics and more.

UPPER LEARNING (GRADES 9-12) In Upper Learning, teachers give students encouragement and freedom to pursue their passions and take responsibility for their learning and their actions. Students stretch themselves by choosing challenging and varied courses that will both prepare them for college and expand their knowledge of who they are. Rich and varied course offerings give students the ability to select from 16 different AP classes and more than 110 unique courses ranging from Advanced European History to Advanced Game Production and Astronomy to Stagecraft. Teachers strive for depth of understanding and challenge students to question and think for themselves.

BEYOND

The arts at The Galloway School are grounded in the educational philosophy of the school and offer experiences in music, dance, theatre, technical theatre and visual arts that kindle self-awareness, intellectual curiosity, and creative expression. We highly value the creative process and believe in nurturing individual expression while creating connections across disciplines, so the arts are integrated into the curriculum at every level. The gifted faculty of teaching artists is dedicated to teaching mastery of their craft to students by developing both skills and cultural literacy. They work independently, as well as in collaboration with other classroom teachers and visiting artists, to integrate the joy of the creative process across the learning continuum in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative and experiential educational environment. Classes in each discipline are deliberately designed to engage students at all skill levels from introductory to advanced so that each student can grow in their understanding of the creative process from conception of an idea to the final reflection. Performance opportunities abound for Middle and Upper Learning students who wish to explore these art forms on a deeper level after school, and participation in each of these groups is open to all students. We regularly celebrate student work at every level with gallery showings, concerts and performances throughout the year.

From Jr. Scots to state championships, when it comes to athletics opportunities and achievements, Galloway has a deep bench. Our athletics program includes offerings from Pre-K all the way through grade 12. The Jr. Scots program allows our younger athletes in Pre-K through grade 6 to compete with their classmates while being taught the fundamentals of the game. Jr. Scots currently includes basketball, soccer, track, Ultimate Frisbee and volleyball. Beginning in grade 6, student-athletes enter our interscholastic athletics program, where we offer 10 sports across three seasons. These include: basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. Our open participation philosophy welcomes every level of athlete to join a team and experience the valuable life lessons learned through sport. Although accomplishments can be measured in many different ways, Galloway has won 19 state championships, 11 of which have come in the past five years. To support our thriving athletics program, Galloway has multiple venues in where our teams train and compete. The gymnasium is located on the main campus and hosts home basketball games and volleyball matches. Galloway also calls 12 acres on DeFoors Ferry Road home for our soccer and track teams. It is equipped with a full eight-lane competition track, a full-size natural grass soccer field and a soccer practice field. Our eight-acre Warren Road Athletics Complex is the home for Galloway’s baseball and softball teams and is equipped with a softball/baseball field and an indoor facility with locker rooms and batting cages.

BEYOND

The heart of the Galloway experience lies in relationships. Students, teachers, parents, coaches and staff are all vital members of the community. We all consider ourselves lifelong learners and support each other in that endeavor. We learn together. We respect each other. We celebrate each other. And we care for one another. Our Student Life program offers a wide variety of opportunities for students to explore different interests, demonstrate leadership and discover ways they can contribute to the benefit of others and the community. More than 40 clubs and activities are available to Middle and Upper Learning students, including competitive groups like Mock Trial, Debate Team and Academic Team. Advisories also offer opportunities for growth and connection. They are cross-grade level groups that meet regularly and focus on academic and social-emotional growth and success. Comprised of roughly 12 students, the groups stay together over the course of a student’s time at Galloway, and they are crafted so every student can reap the benefits of these microcommunities. In addition to the vital parent/teacher relationship, Galloway parents have numerous opportunities to connect with and support each other, including community cookouts, the semi-annual gala, parent education sessions, book clubs, volunteer opportunities and more. The entire Galloway community feels like an extended family, filled with diverse adults and children who share an appreciation for forward thinking, joyful learning – and each other.

BEYOND

Some of the deepest learning in life happens outside of our daily routines and familiar surroundings. Galloway provides a wide variety of opportunities that expand student learning beyond the walls of the classroom with off-campus and international educational trips, outdoor education leadership adventures and service-learning experiences in the local community.

Each division of the school suspends the regular school schedule for 1-3 weeks to offer students the opportunity to take a deep dive into a single topic of study. These immersive, in-depth experiential learning opportunities cover a wide range of topics with an emphasis on experimentation, collaboration, and creativity. Early Learning teachers select an overarching theme and each class is given a related sub-theme to explore during the one-week experience called “The Happening.” Middle Learning students are organized by grade level for overnight outdoor education trips. They also explore themes by grade level for one week during “Immersion.” In Upper Learning, students choose from a variety of topics to study during a 3-week “Excursion.” Topics change each year and have covered a wide range of interests from robotics to refugee resettlement to cultural immersion abroad, and more.
