SYSTEMIC PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE - AN OVERVIEW Organisations are complex systems where many elements come together to enhance or inhibit performance. At Gallus we have developed an approach to creating systemic performance excellence; a performance environment that everybody can believe in. This is the first of a series of insights that will examine the approach. Here, we outline the model and the basic elements of the 7 STEPS TO PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE and the 4 PERFORMANCE ENABLERS. Over the coming months we will consider each step in detail and explore the practical steps you can take to move towards systemic performance excellence in your organisation.

GALLUS CONSULTING 7 steps to performance excellence... CREATE A SENSE OF PURPOSE

Magic can happen when people feel part of something bigger than themselves that will make a positive impact upon society. The first step is to capture the VISION, VALUES and PURPOSE for your organisation in a way that is meaningful for all stakeholders and that will drive the right behaviours and decisions.

CLARIFY BUSINESS MODEL

Explicitly defining and communicating the BUSINESS MODEL (the mechanism through which you achieve your purpose) creates a map through which plans, activities, capabilities and people can align. Step 2 ensures that the entire organisation has a solid understanding of the value proposition and how they can contribute to it.

OPTIMISE VALUE CHAIN

Re-engineer and optimise the value chain to bring maximum impact on commercial results, value creation and brand. Create an appropriate BLUEPRINT for success (capturing the future state that will best support strategic goals) and a ROAD-MAP demonstrating how to get there and featuring a detailed programme plan. In short, this step is about laying out the path, MODEL IT – MAP IT – MEASURE IT – MASTER IT – MAKE IT HAPPEN, and ensuring that your people have the capability to do the same going forward.

DRIVE STRATEGIC FOCUS

Successful organisations know where they want to go, why they want to get there and how they plan to do it; and that’s everyone! Performance excellence can only be achieved where efforts are aligned across the organisation and where resources, processes, capabilities and attention are focused on the right things. Five FOCUS LEVERS create alignment and make sure that your leaders are capable of leading transformation and agile to change. This focus ensures that disruptions are minimised and that everyone knows what the organisation wants to achieve, what success will look like and how they can be part of it.

DESIGN & ALIGN

Performance excellence demands that organisations are structured and configured in a way that will optimise CRITICAL PROCESSES, best leverage CAPABILITIES and enable GOAL ACHIEVEMENT. The organisation’s system for managing is only as good as the metrics it relies upon and the willingness of those responsible to observe its outputs objectively from multiple perspectives. Step 6 creates a GUIDANCE SYSTEM that provides the organisation with a true reading of performance; powered by METRICS THAT MATTER, POWERFUL CONVERSATIONS and curious people with an ENTERPRISE MIND-SET.

The final step of the process drives evolution and ensures that the organisation remains AGILE to the inevitable changes in the environment in which it operates. Systems, processes and people are aligned to drive innovation, improve quality, maximise efficiency and leverage risk appropriately
