Taking risks is an essential feature of the game in all settings where children spend time playing. The game aims to offer a possibility of finding acceptable risks as part of stimulating, challenging and controlled learning. The game should be aimed at managing the balance between the need to offer risks and the need to keep to children safe from serious harm. In the game, exposure to a certain degree of risk is advantageous since it satisfies a basic human need, and provides the child with the possibility of learning about risks and their consequences in a controlled environment. Regarding the characteristics of children’s play and how they benefit from it in children’s areas in relation to their development, children need to learn to face the risk and this can cause bumps, bruises and even sometimes breakage of a limb. The purpose of the EN1176 standard is, first, and foremost, to prevent accidents that produce incapacitation or other fatal consequences, and secondly, to reduce the serious consequences derived from the possible setbacks, that will inevitably occur due to the children’s desire to increase their level of competence, whether socially, intellectually or physically. The standard does not address safety aspects though age criteria, because the ability to control risk is based on the level of skill of the users. In addition, other users who aren’t within the expected age range will almost certainly make use of the equipment of the playground area.

The orientation. Orient the slides to the north so they do not heat up and avoid obstacles where glare is possible.
Impact absorption material. Fundamental to guarantee safety. Materials that maintain their impact absorption capacity over time will be sought. Not always the most expensive is the best.
CERTIFIED AND SUSTAINABLE PLAYGROUNDS. IT IS CONVENIENT THAT THE GAMES ARE CERTIFIED AND THAT IN THEIR DESIGN SUSTAINABILITY AND ECO-DESIGN CRITERIA HAVE BEEN APPLIED.
The accessibility. All children are different and should enjoy and access elements that serve to relate and stimulate their sensory abilities.
Separate by ages. The standard makes two distinctions: under or over 36 months (with different requirements for each situation).
Facilitate the vision of responsible adults. By distributing the small elements in the entrance and those of greater height to the bottom and avoiding hidden areas to the exterior vision.
The free fall height. It is indicated by the manufacturer and is measured from the platform, a seat or a net to the ground. Said height defines the type and thickness of the impact absorption material.
The fence. You must clearly limit where the playground area ends and the danger begins. It is essential in areas with vehicle traffic or with terraces.
The inspection and maintenance.
Provide shade and shelter from the rain. Planting trees, pergolas or roofs integrated into the environment.
The playground area has to have a correct maintenance and a periodic visual inspection of routine (profitable because in the long run it saves costs).

DESIGNING A SAFE PLAYGROUND
As of November 2018 comes into force the standard EN1176:2018 on The European Standards for Playground Equipment. Below, a summary of the most important points of the standard has been included. However, it may not be enough to do a complete inspection. Some type of training may be necessary. The standard in all its parts, covers the general and particular requirements of security (by type of element), as well as the test methods or pre-installation or maintenance instructions. In addition, there is a regulatory complement, the EN1177 referred to Impact absorbing playground surfacing: Safety requirements and test methods.
EN1176 AND EN1177. INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE AND SUPERVISION. •
The installation must be carried out by a competent person or company and following the manufacturer’s instructions.
•
Inspection, maintenance and supervision of equipment playground to maintain security and functionality of the elements.
•
Inspection, maintenance and supervision must be carried out by a competent person or company with the appropriate knowledge and following the manufacturer’s instructions or with more frequently (in exceptional cases such as vandalism, continued use…)
•
The person responsible for the supervision or the owner of playground equipment must establish routines and adequate drawings for inspection, maintenance and supervision.
•
The person responsible for supervisor must ensure that the staff is prepared for the task that has been entrusted to them and that they have sufficient information regarding responsibility and competence.
•
The responsible person must make sure that the forms are completed of inspection, maintenance and supervision and that are established documents that are saved and available for whoever comes.
•
If defects or damage to the equipment that could be dangerous are detected, the person in charge must prevent the access to the public until it is remedied the incidence.

INSPECTION AND CONTINUOUS CONTROL. Both parents to teachers or any adult can perform basic tasks of the state of elements to avoid accidents: loose woods, damaged strings, sharp protrusions… In this case, they must be notifying the appropriate person (owner or supervisor of the installation) so that they can correct it as soon as possible. The following list provides more advice, but it does not replace the standard, but it is only a help. With each equipment the customer receives documentation referring to the frequencies of inspection, maintenance and control.

Existing vegetation around the playground area should be conserve as much as possible, taking into account plants that release pollen (problematic for asthmatics) or poisonous plants.
•
The wells must be closed.
•
We must pay attention to everything that modifies the user’s body notion. Children want to try, crawl, climb, which exposes them to certain risks. The adult, as the person responsible for the child, can reduce risks (for example with clothes, not wearing items that can get caught in the element, or scarves, headphones….).
•
Traffic accidents. When the playground is close to areas with road traffic, it must be taken into account when planning the installation, placing elements that clearly identify the boundaries for the areas.

PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT WITHOUT BARRIERS. The requirements of DIN33942 have been specified to allow a large extent for all people to use the equipment without the help of others. This applies particularly to wheelchair users (also with upper body disability) and to the blind, deaf people with visual, hearing, motor or other impairments. The following parameters are only a guide to take into account when if supervising a playground equipment without barriers:
•
The ramps should not have an inclination of more than 6%
•
The spaces and openings between floor boards must not be larger than 8 mm.
•
Wheel deflectors must have a minimum height of 100mm. If possible these guardrails should have a contrast colour to facilitate orientation of those who have a visual impairment.
•
Two wheelchairs located across the width require a minimum floor space of 1,8m so they can rotate.
•
The zones of displacement destined to changes of direction or stops, entrances and exits of the elements, should have a 1,5x1,5m. The other movement surfaces must have a minimum width of 1,2m.
In addition to these generalities, it is important to bear in mind that a playground without barriers implies much more that the fact the elements meet certain dimensions; the entire environment must contain signs or elements that indicate those areas that may be dangerous. At least two of these signals must refer to some sense (sound, tactile or visual elements are usually used) so that any child is able to detect where they should be most attentive, regardless of their abilities. And of course, we all must be aware of the need for this type of spaces to try to get it normalized.

GENERAL INFORMATION. MATERIALS. In Galopín we have made an effort to acquire the knowledge that allows us to work skillfully with all kinds of materials, from wood to metal, to different types of ropes, springs, paints ... This technical background is combined with the proposals of the designers to articulate the aesthetics of the different ranges. The materials that prevail depend on their use, the environment for which they are designed or their thematic focus. In some cases, we also offer the possibility of choosing between various materials, such as wooden or metal posts; elements in wood with a natural finish or in non-slip laminates with a darker color. In all cases, we put into the treatment of materials the knowledge of our R & D department and the philosophy of traditional craftsmen. Below we list the materials of which our product ranges are composed:
• HPL. HPL panels (High Pressure Laminates) for outdoor conforming to EN438, provide extremely effective protection against external agents, scratching, color degradation and wear and tear. It comes with two finishes, smooth for side panels and signposts, and rough-hex for floors, seats, climbing walls, etc. Its thickness is always 15mm except for the signposts that are 10mm. • High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). Highly resistant to abrasion by chemicals and corrosion, it resists weathering, discoloration and UV rays, does not develop mold or mildew, does not absorb moisture and therefore does not swell or delaminate. Easy to clean and recycle, neither graffiti nor painted adhere to it. Conforming to the toy standard DIN EN 71-3-9-10-11, which guarantees it is toxin-free. Thickness of 20mm and 15mm. • Marine plywood board. 21mm thick birch plywood board with easy-to-restore polyurethane enamel, made from biological components. It comes in two formats, textured lacquer, to which 2 to 3 layers are applied on the surface to each piece and 4 layers on the edges. For floors, seats and other wear surfaces, anti-slip plywood board with phenolic film with high resistance to abrasion is used, applying 4 coats of lacquer for edge protection. In both cases, very resistant and suitable for uses with high structural requirements, excellent behavior against heat and fire and 100% recyclable. • Wood. Wood is the material that best embodies the principles of the new circular economy. The one that allows for cycles of sustainability in its cultivation, treatment, use

and recycling, in a way that affects as little as possible the environmental balance and guarantees a minimum consumption of energy, water resources, etc.
“It also consumes little energy in its transformation and absorbs CO2. When we surround
oursel ves with wood products, we not only get in touch with a natural and biophilic material, but we also help to minimize the impact on climate change. The environmental footprint of wood is very small, practically nonexistent, making it the most sustainable material available.
We like to work with wood, the smell that it gives off in our factory, the different nuances
that it offers to the touch, the beauty of being able to study the grainnature’s drawings, to be able to feel the weight of its essence, its density. Our colleagues demonstrate the skills and the craft they learned from their parents and grandparents, because wood is part of our heritage. In a region of rural tradition, wood was a key element in the home. It was fuel for the fireplace, the material used to make farming implements and tools, as well as a source for specialized crafts, such as the shipbuilding carpentry and the wooden clogs trade. We believe in forestry, in the treasure of our mountains, because preserving our woodlands is not only a source of wealth and economic development, but also contributes to maintaining the population and improving the quality of life of the rural world.
But this respect for our traditions is combined with a commitment to exploring new
techniques, advances in research and innovative solutions. In our wood-based range, we offer the best technical solutions, such as laminate wood, that prevents superficial tensions that cause cracks by redistributing the sapwood with the heartwood.
That is why our wood designs are so robust and durable. They remain in cities throughout
the years. Its design is timeless, not succumbing to fads, with a clean image that prevails. It respects tradition and is inspired by innovation and creativity. The games with wooden posts evoke the past while stand as a commitment to sustainability and to the future.
METALLIC ELEMENTS:
• Aluminum. Treated in different ways in our manufacturing process, we use pure aluminum in foundry pieces, where it provides a high level of resistance against corrosion; anodized aluminum, which is very resistant to environmental corrosive agents, abrasion as well as wear and tear, featuring great surface strength due to its adherence and the properties of the anodization, it is used in punctured sheets, brackets, bars, steps... lacquered aluminum, used in squared metallic posts, features advantages over other metallic elements such as light weight, durability, and high resistance to corrosion, among others.
“Aluminum is a very robust material. Although it may be true that its transformation
process requires the consumption of a large amount of energy, we also know from the analysis

of its life cycle that it is very durable and efficient. For this reason, it is used in pieces that face aggressive environments, such as the masts of sailboats that endure transoceanic crossings. In addition to resisting corrosion, aluminum is a recyclable material, which largely counteracts the energy consumption required for its processing.
In our aluminum ranges we do not use self-tapping screws, but rather through bolts or
rivets. And of course in these ranges, it is compulsory to only use screws made of stainless steel to avoid gal vanic corrosion. Not being able to superimpose the screws, as is the case in the wood ranges, we had to reconfigure many assemblies, a task taken on by our engineering and research department. We are convinced that our commitment to work with all types of materials is an investment in knowledge and collaboration.
We had to look for a color that did not interfere with our traditional color range, requiring
us to test several different combinations before reaching a conclusion. Our priority was to work with a reliable lacquer that protected the piece during the entire lifespan of the product, and that at the same time integrated harmoniously with the aesthetics of all our ranges.
The aluminum structures are very stable because they do not produce the volume
changes that can be found in wood when alternating wet and dry cycles. For this reason, we also use HPL, high-pressure laminate, in these structures.
This stability and rigidity contribute to that luxurious aspect that characterizes aluminum
equipment, equipment that does not need any type of maintenance. In urban environments, they offer less visual impact and a light and elegant aesthetic.
Although one cannot appreciate these differences from a distance or by looking at a
render, the change from a wooden version of an element to one in aluminum required innumerable calculations and plans, as well as researching all types of materials. That is why many satisfied customers throughout the world applaud us for .”
• Stainless steel. . We use of stainless steel AISI 304 and AISI 316 in areas prone to wear and tear, preventing vandalism and corrosion. It is used in slide surface sheets, firefighters’ poles, bar slides, pads, swing chains… • Electrolytic galvanized steel with a powder coating. The steel is fully protected against corrosion; the powder coat offers extra protection. • Hot dip galvanized steel. It combines the mechanical resistance of the steel with the resistance against corrosion created by the zinc. We have attained resistance against corrosion for over ten years, ensuring that the unit is durable and free from corrosion, able to withstand years of use. In some cases, a finishing powder coating is subsequently applied for the purpose of design.

• Polyurea coating. . The 2 mm thick polyurea coating with an aliphatic finish protects against wear and tear, water and moisture, temperature changes and UV rays. Polyurea is also an inert material, 100% free of solvents and toxic materials. It provides our polystyrene and polyurethane elements with a high degree of resistance and durability. •
Polystyrene: Our expanded polystyrene boards, featuring a density of 27/30 kg / m3, allow us to create large elements that are easy to handle and transport due to their light weight. This material is also respectful with the environment because it is recyclable, innocuous and inert.
•
Polyurethane: For the creation of light sculptural games, with soft shapes and rounded edges, we use the rigid polyurethane foam casting.
OUR OWN COMPONENTS.: We feature a number of noteworthy components which are included in our units and which make us unique:
• Ropes. We generally use braided polyamide rope, with a fiber core and 4 or 6 braided inner steel cables. In cases where a higher degree of resistance is required, we substitute the fiber core for a central galvanized steel core. Depending on the final use, we provide 16, 18 or 20 mm diameters. • Galvanized cable. Composed of several metallic cables arranged helically around a core. Minimum diameter is 12mm. It is used in zip lines and related elements. • Chains. Chains with straight rectified links made of AISI 316 stainless steel. Used in swing chains, bridge connectors, … • Injected Plastic. All injected plastic elements are made with polyamides, low-density polyethylene or polypropylenes, which are resistant to outdoor elements, discoloration and UV rays. All pigments and composition are made in accordance with DIN EN71-3-910-11, which guarantees that they are toxic-free. These are one-of-kind pieces that are the hallmark of Galopín. • Spring spirals. Made of steel with heat treatment that guarantees flexibility and a high resistance to breakage and corrosion. Their surface is treated with cataphoresis-KTL and subsequently powder coated. The diameter of the wire is 20mm. • Slides. There is choice of materials to be used on the siding surface of these games: HDPE sheet, best suited for areas of extreme heat, and AISI 304 stainless steel with a 1.5 mm thickness that prevents static electricity. • Handling Elements. Game elements such as tic-tac-toe, rattles, textures ...

CONSERVATION OF WOOD. All wood receives a special protection treatment in accordance with European standard EN351. The need to apply a chemical treatment to the wood depends on the possibility that in the installation area there are that attack the wood.
SUPERFICIAL TREATMENT. The wood has a layer of lasur of primer and other of finishing, with what is obtained the maximum useful life, a great resistance to the meteorological agents, as well as a protection of the natural texture of the wood. All our wood components receive two finishing coats to saturate the fibres with pigments and guarantee the highest quality. The steel elements are subjected to a thermos- galvanized or/and powder lacquered treatment with polyester resin paint.

ENVIRONMENT, QUALITY AND SECURITY SYSTEMS. The Design and R + D + i departments focus their efforts on the creation of safe play areas; that is why all our products comply with the European certification EN-1176 issued by the TÜV Product Service. WARRANTIES. Our degree of commitment and the quality of our products is reflected on the following warranties: •
15-year warranty on failures due to manufacturing defects or decomposition of HDPE and HPL panels. These panels feature top protection against ultraviolet radiation, although with time their color may be slightly altered.
•
15-year warranty on galvanized posts and pieces, powder coated and anodized aluminum, and stainless steel (*).
•
15-year warranty on the supply of all replacement pieces for the game units beginning on the date on which the sale was made.
•
10-year warranty on wood decay, structural or manufacturing defects.
•
5-year warranty on spring ruptures, on the coating of zinc-coated posts, on coated plywood panels, screws and molded plastic pieces (except mobile or mechanical systems).
•
5-year warranty on climbing ropes and against any manufacturing or structural defect.
•
2-year warranty for the rest of the equipment components.
The warranty coverage of the damaged parts will be applicable as long as the installation and maintenance has been carried out in accordance to the instructions and indications provided by the company Galopín Playgrounds, SL. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, nor the damages caused by vandalism and improper use of units The warranty shall be considered void in the event of modification, intervention or substitution of unauthorized aftermarket pieces. (*) Units installed in coastal areas, less than 300 m from the shore, will be covered by the warranty for a period of up to 5 years.
SPACE REQUERIMENTS. In some cases, the safety zones of the equipment can overlap, but they should not under any circumstances in the case of slides, swings, carousels, zip lines and other elements that are not fixed.

SHOCK ABSORBER SURFACES. The quality and the thickness of the impact absorption of material must comply with the safety standards EN1176 and EN1177. In addition, the material must allow adequate water drainage, as well as access to the anchors for maintenance. From Galopín Playgrounds, SL we give the option of using some HDPE lids to install on the elements that go on synthetic floor, and that facilitate this task.
•
Rubber and other synthetic materials. Install according to the manufacturer ‘s instructions.
•
No compact fillers (gravel, sand, wood shavings or sawdust). You should be placed in a uniform way, taking into account the standards EN1176 and EN1177 relating to the particle size, and the data that appear in the technical specifications of the playground manufacturer, regarding depth and fall height. It must be borne in mind that in areas of very intensive use this type of material tends to spread, so it’s important to do continuous supervision.
•
Other types of non-compact fillers. In this case, if the material is not listed in the standards EN1176 and EN1177 must submit homologation test by an authorized body.

INSTALLATION. To facility installations, as well as other environmental and logistic requeriments, our elements are can be delivered in different ways: •

For reasons of safety, stability and protection against vandalism all elements must be well anchored to the ground. The playground elements of Galopín Playground, SL can be fixed to the floor in two ways: •
Anchorage to the ground with shoes or couplings.
•
With concrete. The hardness of the concrete must meet minimum requirements and the works must be carried out by qualified staff / company.
In the case of non-compact filling materials, the concrete and the elements must be left perfectly covered, in order to prevent the user from gaining access to them and to run some type of risk.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION. To ensure that the structure of element is perfectly installed and completely safe, must be assembled following the instructions provide by manufacturer and delivered with all elements of Galopín Playgrounds SL. In addition, this task, must be commissioned by a qualified staff / company. If this is not done, security can be affected and the guarantee will lose its validity. If you need additional installation instructions, please contact the manufacturer or distributor. In order to avoid accidents, the structure of element must be completely inaccessible until it is completely installed.

INSPECTION. Once the installation is completed, a safety, performance and assembly control should be carried out. If an equipment does not pass any of these controls, it will be necessary to take opportune measures before putting it into use.
MAINTENANCE OF LASURED ELEMENTS. To preserve the appearance and properties of wood, it is essential to apply proper maintenance. The maintenance intervals and the choice of method depends on the location of element and the use.
RETOUCHING OF COMPONENTS OF STEEL LACQUARED TO DUST. Our touch-up paints are suitable for repairing any damage on powder-coated surfaces. The process to apply it would be the following: •
The minimum temperature will be 10ºC. Do not apply in full sun.
•
Carefully sand all edges around the damage area.
•
Clean the area with turpentine.
•
Apply the paint for touch-ups and let dry 8h
RECICLYING. The materials used by Galopín Playgrounds, SL comply with the technical requirements and cause the least possible environmental impact throughout their life cycle. Our products can be separated into pieces that facilitate the recycling of materials. Bellow you will find some examples of waste disposal methods, that you can use depending on the type of material: •

The impact absorption surface must be at least 1.5m around the game structure. According to the height of fall of the game this dimension varies.

INSPECTION PROGRAM. For children, the pleasure of the game is greater if the equipment is in the best conditions and is checked regularly, as it will bring confidence to them and peace of mind to those responsible. On the other hand, the durability and safety of the elements will also depend to a great extent on the maintenance service, together with the fact that the products manufactured by Galopín Playgrounds, SL comply with the main quality standards. The maintenance of the products manufactured by Galopín Playgrounds SL must be carried out in accordance with the European Regulation of Routine and Functional Inspection and Maintenance, of the Equipment for Playgrounds EN1176-7. The frequency of inspection will vary depending on the type of equipment, the materials used and other factors such as intensive use, vandalism, location near the sea, environmental pollution or the age of the equipment. If the inspection reveals the lack of security of any of the parts and it is not possible to replace or repair said part or pieces immediately, the use of the equipment (or of the part pending repair) must be prevented by immobilization or withdrawal from it. > VISUAL INSPECTION OF ROUTINE. Inspection aimed at identifying obvious risks that may result from normal use, vandalism or weather conditions. All polyethylene panels are made of HDPE with UV stabilizer to offer a long life free of problems. However, some loss of color and deterioration of the material can be expected after a long time of exposure to ultraviolet rays. ANCHORING OF ELEMENT
MAINTENANCE PROGRAM. During the execution of any maintenance procedure, it is necessary to put the element out of service and warn the user of the risks that could be faced if not done in this way. All spare parts must meet the specifications of Galopín Playgrounds SL or be acquired directly from the manufacturing company. As a customer you must identify the part in the breakdowns and the mounting method in the installation instructions. Here is a list of the maintenance components: •

Apart from the periodic inspections mentioned above, we recommend cleaning the powder coating with a neutral soapy solution and a soft cloth, at least once a year (if the conditions of the element are special, the periodicity can be increased). Do not use solvents or strong solutions containing chlorinated hydrocarbons, esters, acetone cleaners or abrasive polishers.

All the plastic elements of Galopín Playgrounds, SL are manufactured in HDPE with UV stabilizer to offer a long life free of problems. However, some loss of color and deterioration of the material can be expected after a long period of exposure to ultraviolet rays. This will vary depending on the location and orientation of the slide, but after a period of fifteen years all panels should be

periodically checked for signs of deterioration, and replaced if necessary. •

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE REMOVAL OF EQUIPMENT. At the end of its useful life, the elements manufactured by Galopín Playgrounds, SL can be disassembled and classify the pieces according to the type of material, for recycling or disposal:
