DIGITAL VIDEO AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Video Production Made Easy: Event Videography

(4 Weeks) $129 FLMC 1002.4901 | 20 Hours | 1/29 - 2/21 | T, R | 5:30pm-8:00pm | Ball High, Room 2003 | Dudas In this course, students are presented with the techniques that cover shooting and editing simple video shots from your personal recording device. This short course is great for the home user and utilizes software such as: Magisto, WeVideo, and a brief introduction to Final Cut Pro. Students will produce at least one video during the course that can be used for promotion on social media or websites. Students need to have a flash drive and SD Card. Classes are held in the Ball High Production Studio.

Digital Video Production

Study and explore advanced techniques in order to produce more sophisticated videos for use in marketing and entertainment. In this course, students discover how to integrate and sync audio and video, as well as gain insight into lighting, framing and manipulating video images. Topics presented include: the importance of the pre-production planning process including storyboarding; transitioning to the production phase and completing final editing in post production. Video manipulation is done with Final Cut Pro as well as an introduction of audio production through Audacity. Laws governing filming and talent releases are also discussed. Upon successful completion of this course, the student should have an understanding of the skills needed to properly plan, produce and edit to completion. Students will need to have a 8 gb Flash drive and 16 gb SD card to store their work. The class will conclude with a presentation of projects. Completed projects may be used by the student to help market their current endeavors. Classes are held in the Ball High Production Studio.

Desktop Support Technician

Earn this OSA certificate in just 16 weeks! Register for our Desktop Support program by enrolling in these 3 classes simultaneously. This program explores the PC system from software, hardware, and operating system points of view. CompTIA A+ topics are covered and include system boards, processors, memory, power supplies, input/output (I/O) ports, internal adapters, printers, and basic networking devices. Software topics include client/server operating systems and installation, as well as licensing software application. The knowledge integrates with fundamental customer support concepts for the operation of a help desk or call center. The fundamentals of computer networking including the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, network architecture such as local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) are addressed. Other topics of discussion include: network topologies, network protocols and services, routers and switches, wireless and access points, Virtual Private Networks (VPN), security, & IP addressing and subnetting. Students wishing to take the Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Networking Fundamentals exam or CompTIA A+ test must purchase vouchers separately. Become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in a long-term care facility or for a Home Health Agency. Explore the key component set forth by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. Course topics include resident’s rights, communication, safety observation, reporting and basic comfort and care. Emphasis is placed on the effective interaction with the respective healthcare teams. CPR training is provided as part of the course but will be outside of the stated class time. Students must enroll concurrently in both NURA 1001 (60 classroom hours) and NURA 2005 (40 clinical hours) to complete the program and to be eligible for the certification examination. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor and may include day, evening and/or weekend times. Healthcare program requirements must be met prior to enrollment. Burgundy/wine scrubs, closed-toe white shoes and a watch with a second hand must be worn during clinical days. The student is responsible for transportation to and from clinical sites. The course textbook and workbook are included with tuition. Students are responsible for scheduling and paying for the certification testing fees online. This program is eligible for a payment plan. Additional funding sources may be available for eligible students.

The Phlebotomy course explores the practice of phlebotomy and should provide an understanding of the role of the phlebotomist in the health care system. Presented are: medical terminology, safety and legal issues, various related physiological systems, laboratory tests, and specimen handling. Upon successful completions students should be competent in performing venipuncture and dermal puncture and other methods of collecting clinical specimens. Students discover the proper techniques and safety precautions, as well as an understanding of professionalism, ethics and medical terminology related to obtaining specimens from adults, children and infants Healthcare requirements must be met prior to the first day of class. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor, and may include day, evening and/or weekends. The student is responsible for transportation to and from clinical sites. Burgundy scrubs, a lab coat and student patch are available for purchase in the college’s bookstore and must be worn during clinical days. Upon successful completion of this course the student should be eligible to take the National Healthcare Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) examination. This course includes one attempt at the CPT examination, which will be scheduled by the instructor and is non-refundable and non-transferable. The course explores how to interpret EKG changes in commonly seen diseases, and important heart rhythm disturbances. This course introduces the student to the skills required for employment in an EKG stress testing laboratory, as well as an ambulatory EKG monitoring center. Upon successful completion of this course the student should be prepared the student to take the National Healthcare Association (NHA) Certified EKG Technician (CET) examination. Included in the cost of this course is one attempt at the CET examination, which will be scheduled by the instructor and is non-refundable and nontransferable. CPR Training CPR Certification BLS (Basic Life Support) Galveston College is an approved American Heart Association training site and happily provides training for individuals, companies, groups and organizations with a flexible schedule. We can train your employees in CPR, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens to help them obtain the necessary credentials and certifications needed on the job. Course books, masks and one-way resuscitator are included in the cost of the course.

First Aid, Heartsaver CPR and Bloodborne Pathogens $109 This combo course covers the basics of first aid, the most common life threatening emergencies, how to recognize them and to recognize when a person needs CPR, how to give CPR & use an AED device, how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials. The course meets the requirements of OSHA for bloodborne pathogens. Upon successful completion a Heartsaver CPR, AED, First Aid card, as well as a Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogen card will be issued to the student.

Basic Life Support CPR $66

This course is required for students in most healthcare training programs. It is designed to teach healthcare professionals how to perform high-quality CPR individually or as a part of a healthcare team. BLS students will learn rescue techniques for adults, children & infants, including the use of barrier devices & AEDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. BLS card is issued to the student upon successful completion of the course.

HEALTHCARE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

Specific program applications online. Applications for healthcare programs must be submitted 2 weeks prior to class start date. The State of Texas requires that all students in direct patient contact have obtained the immunizations below. In addition, we must abide by any requirements put forth by our clinical facilities. It is the studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s responsibility to obtain all immunizations in the proper time frame; students will not be allowed to enroll or begin clinicals unless all requirements are satisfied. Hep B: A series of 3 immunizations and documentation of a positive titer 4-6 weeks after the 3rd immunization (it takes a minimum of 4 months to complete the series of three immunizations). If you need to fast track you can request a TWINRIX combo vaccine. Influenza (flu): Proof of one dose within the last year. Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR): If you were born in or after 1957 you must have documentation of 2 doses or a titer result to show immunity. Tetanus (Tdap): Those in an active clinical setting should show one dose within 2 years; those with no direct patient contact must have within the last 10 years. Varicella (Chickenpox): You must have 2 immunizations, a report of positive titer, or report of illness date. Tuberculosis (TB) skin Test (PPD): Proof of a negative reading within 12 months of the end date of clinical, or proof of a teter positive for antibodies. Chest Xray is required only if there is a history of positive PPD test. Xray must be after the date of positive PPD. Additional Requirements: A High School Diploma or High School Equivalent, current physical and a criminal background check. All students must provide a satisfactory criminal history, which can be obtained through the Texas Dept. of Public Safety website (www.txdps.state.tx.us). The following may disqualify a person from these programs: felony convictions; misdemeanor convictions involving crimes against persons; felony deferred adjudications for the sale, possession, distribution or transfer of narcotics or controlled substances; and registered sex offenders. All students must provide a current BLS CPR card, with the exception of Nurse Aide.

Students will review the fabrication of socket and butt weld pipes, install pipe hangers and supports, sketch isometric views of piping assemblies, interpret piping standards and specifications, and use measuring devices.

Automotive Climate Control Systems Theory Part 2 (16 Weeks) $350

Automotive Climate Control Part 1 (Offered in the Fall Semester Only) This certificate program will help you explore and familiarize yourself with the theories and systems of automotive air conditioning and heating systems. Emphasis is given to the basic refrigeration cycle, diagnosis and repair of system malfunctions, manual and electronic climate control systems and safety. EPA guidelines for refrigerant handling, and new refrigerant replacement are presented. Classes are taught at Ball High Automotive Shop. Students must wear PPE and complete both courses to be awarded certificate. A classroom set of textbooks is available for use.

Diesel Engine Testing and Repair 2 (16 Weeks) $750

This OSA certificate program provides students seeking a career in diesel technology the skills necessary to successfully enter the workforce. Topics include the use of engine measuring tools and the principles of operations for major engine components. Students are briefed on the materials needed to take the ASE test of Diesel Engines. Textbooks are included in the tuition. Students must wear long sleeve shirts and pants in the shop. High School Diploma or High School Equivalent is required. Classes are held at the Ball High Automotive Center. Students must complete both courses to be awarded certificate.

Through a partnership with College of the Mainland (COM), students can take classes for high school equivalency prep and English as a second language (ESL) right here at Galveston College. Adult education courses prepare students for college and careers through different types of programs. Whether you’re here to get a better job, earn more money at work, learn English, go to college, or finish your high school diploma, Adult Education is here to make it possible. Adult Education is committed to student success. All of our programs increase the opportunities and prosperity of the diverse community we serve.

High School Equivalency (GED)

High school equivalency classes develop the reading, writing and math skills needed to pass a Texas high school equivalency exam. These classes are also a great place to improve skills to move into a workforce training program at Galveston College. These eight-week classes begin five times a year, tuition is free and there are no textbooks or other purchases required. Morning or evening classes are offered at several locations. Students who complete their high school equivalency test receive a diploma and can participate in the COM graduation ceremony.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

English as a second language classes help students improve their everyday English, get ready to attend college or learn new job skills. Classes cover reading, writing, listening and speaking the English language. There is no minimum skill level required. Courses are eight weeks long and meet at many locations. The tuition is free and no books or purchases are needed.

How to Get Started

New students must attend a registration session where they take a test to determine their current level. Although students make a reservation for registration and testing at Galveston College through the COM website, classes are held at Galveston College and other island locations.

Register online at www.gc.edu/CEregister Please register at least one week prior to class start date. Tuition and fees must be paid upon registration. Students can register online at www.gc.edu/CEregister with a valid MasterCard, Visa, Discover Card, or American Express. You may register in person by coming to the Continuing Education Office located on the first floor of Moody Hall, at 4015 Avenue Q, Galveston, TX 77550. We are open Monday through Friday from 8:00am – 5:00pm. You may register over the phone by calling the Continuing Education Office at 409-944-1344. You may fax your completed registration form (this form is available on our website) anytime to 409-944-1501, Attn: CE Dept. You may mail your registration form and send payment for tuition and fees to Galveston College, Continuing Education Registration, 4015 Avenue Q, Galveston, Texas 77550. Please do not send cash.

Senior Discounts: Classes listed with an “ ” asterisk are eligible for a 50% senior discount for those over the age of 65 and who live in-district. This discount is applied upon registration. Class Cancellations, Room Changes, and Rescheduling: Courses with low enrollment prior to a start date are canceled prior to the start date. Students will be notified by phone or email when a class they are enrolled in has been canceled; however, we are sometimes unable to reach everyone. A refund of 100% is automatically processed upon cancellation of classes. To help avoid cancellations PLEASE REGISTER AT LEAST A WEEK PRIOR TO THE START DATE, and encourage your friends to register with you. Occasionally, canceled courses are rescheduled for a later start date, and you will be notified by phone when the opportunity presents itself. In the event of a classroom change notice of the room change will be posted on the Continuing Education doors and the classroom that was originally listed. Refunds: Refunds prior to the start of class will be 100%. Refund requests should be made in person or by phone to 409-944-1344. Refund requests must be received during normal business hours and at least one business day prior to the start date of the class. When a class is canceled you will automatically be refunded the full course amount. There are NO REFUNDS GIVEN AFTER A COURSE HAS BEGUN. There are NO REFUNDS for ED2GO, ProTrain, or Language Authority online courses. Parking: All students must have a valid GC parking sticker (please pick up in the Media Center Room R-120). Visitors to campus must park in the visitors parking lot at the corner of Avenue Q and 39th St. Unpermitted cars parked in the Moody lot will be towed. Student ID Cards- Visitors: Enrolled students are required to posses a valid student ID card. These may be obtained in the Media Center (Room R-120) once you have your payment receipt. Visitors to campus and those who are only here for a short contract training class must display a visitor name tag on their person. These are available in the CE offices or from your instructor. Smoke Free Campus: Galveston College is a smoke free campus. Smoking (including e-cigs) is strictly prohibited in all buildings on the campus grounds and parking areas. Classroom Conduct: Students are expected to conduct themselves in the classroom and/or laboratory in a manner that is conducive to good academic progress. Failure to comply with the lawful direction of a faculty member, teaching assistant or instructor may be a disruption for all students enrolled in the class. Disruptive conduct is considered a serious offense. Faculty reserve the right to remove a student from a class for just cause. Students removed may be referred to the VP of Student Services for disciplinary action. Cell Phone Use: Cell phone use is strictly prohibited during all class/lab sessions. In an emergency, please step outside to avoid disruption. FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), was established to protect the privacy rights of all students. FERPA specifies the types of student information which can be released to the public without a student’s expressed consent and specifies the persons and agencies that may receive other information, which according the FERPA, a college may release to the public without a student's permission and is referred to as “Directory Information.” The information included in the FERPA definition includes name, address, telephone, date and place of birth, degrees earned, date, major, and field of study, academic classification, dates of attendance, number of semester hours in progress and attained to date, previous high school and college attended, and weight and height of members of athletic teams. Students may request that Galveston College withhold their directory information from the general public. To do so, students must fill out the appropriate form with the Admissions Office. Record Of Completion And CEU’s: Nationally recognized CEU’s may be awarded on certain approved occupation-related courses. One CEU is awarded for every 10 contact hours. All courses will award a Certificate of Completion. It is up to the individual student to see if these courses are eligible for CEU’s.
