Skill Up, Step Up Classic Auto Group provides real-world experiences for Galveston students Not only did Andrew Wyrick leave Ball High School with a diploma when he graduated this past spring, he left having some practical job experience from working for Classic Auto Group of Galveston as an automotive and diesel mechanic intern. Andrew, along with Classic technician Jairo Perez, participated in Galveston College’s Automotive and Diesel Technology program, which is a partnership with Ball High School under the leadership of instructor Larry Charvoz. The Galveston College program, which operates at the high school automotive and diesel technology lab, is open to interested students of all ages. Local businesses, such as Classic, are dedicated to hiring graduates of the program.
We’re not just giving “them a summer job; we’re giving them a career.
”
Kent Neubauer, service manager of Classic’s Toyota and Ford stores and a member of the program’s advisory council, has been involved with the program since its inception. Part of the feedback given by the advisory council led Galveston College to add courses in Automotive Climate Control to better meet the local needs of the island’s employers. “We try to take at least one student each year,” Neubauer said. “We have 11 techs and most of them have been with us a long time. It’s a great learning experience for the students and the graduates.” Neubauer, who is celebrating his 30th year with Classic, began working for the dealership during summers and Christmas breaks while obtaining a degree in finance from Sam Houston State University. He wrote service contracts for 10 years and became service manager 20 years ago. Neubauer said he is proud of the opportunities the program provides for Galveston students. (cont. next page)

Automotive Trades (Skill Up, Step Up cont.) “It’s an opportunity for the students to have real-world experiences,” he said. “We’re not just giving them a summer job; we’re giving them a career.” Jairo was hired five years ago after completing the Diesel Engine Testing and Repair program. He said his career in diesel technology has been both enjoyable and rewarding. “I really enjoy the diagnostics -- figuring out the issues and solving the problems,” he said. “It’s important to be able to progress through different levels (of certification) and to continue to gain skills.” Andrew said he enjoys the “real-world challenges” of working at Classic. He enjoys the range of skills he is learning, from routine maintenance to working on complex engines, and gets a thrill out of seeing vehicles he has worked on flow in and out of the shop. “The goal is to hire some of these students full time in the future,” Neubauer said. “It’s important for students to see how what they are learning in school connects with the real world. As a member of the advisory council, we hope more businesses will provide these types of opportunities for our students.”
