Pathway to Patient Care

Layering Creditials Can Mean More Flexibility and Higher Wages Since 2015 Galveston College has been training students from GISD in the Patient Care Tech Pathway. This year’s class will graduate having completed Nurse Aide and Phlebotomy courses. Health Care jobs are in high demand in our area.

What I like best about this class is that I learn with hands-on experiences. – Argenis Veliz The role of a Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT/A), or patient care coordinator and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) are oftentimes assumed to be the same job in allied health. While these roles are similar there are some distinct differences. However, if you are trying to optimize your career opportunities there are many reasons why seeking both credentials makes sense. They may work better together.

The best thing about this class is Mrs. O’Neal! She makes learning so much fun! Thanks to her, I know I can be a nurse.

– Alexis Crich

The best thing in this class is being able to practice the skills in class before going to clinicals. I’m learning how to take blood pressure, measure range of motion and change bed sheets while a resident is in it. – Ashley Chavez Due to the decreased prevalence of LPNs in the hospital, and increased acuity level of patient populations in hospitals, responsibilities have expanded for Patient Care Techs and Nurse Aides. Their skills and knowledge may open up additional employment opportunities. There is also high demand in home healthcare services and for personal care assistants due to the aging baby boomer population. By layering these additional credentials, flexibility in employment could be advantageous. It allows these allied health professionals to take on more and be adaptable to move around where the employer needs them most. It could also mean higher wages as they work to establish a career in allied healthcare. Galveston College offers stackable credentials. See the following pages for details on our Allied Health pathways. SEE PAGES 10-11 FOR ALLIED HEALTH PATHWAYS

THE IMPORTANCE OF CERTIFICATION

99% of educators and employers believe certification to be extremely important in the allied health industry because it demonstrates evidence of a personal commitment to a chosen profession, can give one a competitive edge during the job search, and improves protential for earnings, career opportunities and advancement. Many employers prefer - and serveral states require - allied health workers to obtain certification. National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification indicates that professionals have met a nationally recognized measure of compentancy that may lead to more job opportunities, a higher pay scale, and greater job security. Certification through NHA demonstrates not only a proven level of knowledge, but also a desire for excellence. NHA certification exams are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), and are updated regularly, ensuring that learners have the most job-relevant knowledge and skills. Along with the exams, NHA offers bundled interactive prep and study materials, including Focused ReviewÂŽ, a powerful tool that gives personalized study recommendations derived from practice test results. NHA currently offers credentials for Galveston College programs including Phlebotomy Technician, EKG Technician, and Patient Care Tecnician/Assistant.
