DEGREE AUDIT

You may view your degree progress in your Whitecaps Portal. A degree audit is a computerized evaluation report that compares completed, in progress, and transfer coursework against program requirements. An audit report is generated that reflects coursework compared to requirements of a declared major at Galveston College. The audit is unofficial and should be used only as a tool to assist with planning future coursework. Students are strongly encouraged to work closely with a Counselor, Faculty Advisor, or Program Coordinator when interpreting the report. New and continuing students can view their degree progress by following these instructions: 1. Log into your WHITECAPS PORTAL 2. Under Self Services, Select "WebAdvisor for Students" 3. Select "Academic Planning" 4. Select "Degree Audit" Follow the instructions on the screen.

ACADEMIC FRESH START Academic Fresh Start entitles residents of Texas to seek admission to public institutions of higher education as undergraduate students without consideration of courses undertaken 10 or more years prior to enrollment. An applicant for admission who is a Texas resident may enter Galveston College pursuant to the “academic fresh start” status, Texas Education Code, §51.931. Applicants can request a Petition for Academic Fresh Start from the Office of Admissions. a) Fresh Start must be declared upon entrance to the College. Students who do not declare upon entrance will not be considered after they have enrolled. b) An applicant who elects to apply under this statute may not receive any course credits or grades earned for courses taken 10 or more years prior to enrollment. Notes: Academic Fresh Start does not apply to Financial Aid or VA benefits guidelines and/or regulations. Should the student seek admission under this option, then no college courses or credits 10 years or older will be evaluated. (A student's TSI exemption, based on work completed prior to the fall of 1989, is retained even if a student elects to take advantage of the Academic Fresh Start program.) This option does not relieve students from notifying the college of attendance at previous institutions, nor of the need to submit transcripts indicating all previous course work attempted.

FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIPS FINANCIAL AID

Financial aid must be determined by one of the following methods. 1. Apply for Financial Aid by completing the 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for .the Spring 2020 semester at www.FAFSA.ed.gov. 2. If a student has NOT received a Financial Aid Award Notification Letter for the appropriate academic year from the Galveston College Financial Aid Office, the student must cover any balance that is owed and should contact the Business Office for payment options. 3. If a student has applied for financial aid and/or scholarships and has NOT received notification, the student may contact the Financial Aid Office to determine the status of their application. If a student’s file is incomplete, the student will need to make payment arrangements at the time of registration from their own resources or set-up a FACTS payment plan with the Business Office. If financial aid is awarded during the semester, students will be reimbursed, if eligible. 4. If a student has not applied for financial aid tuition and fees must be paid from the student's own resources. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can be completed online at www.FAFSA.gov Federal regulations mandate that financial aid eligibility must be recalculated for students who withdraw during the semester and who receive AWNs for non-attendance. A portion of financial aid used for tuition, fees, books, and cash disbursements MAY HAVE TO BE REPAID by those students. Students who fail to make the proper arrangements for repayment will be reported to the federal data system. This will prevent students from receiving aid from any school they attend in the future. Please see the Financial Aid Office for additional information.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS When is the priority date to apply for financial aid? The priority date for applying for financial aid for spring 2020 is March 29, 2019. Students may still apply after this date, but will have to pay for their tuition and fees. Aid may be awarded retroactively after classes begin. Will financial aid pay for my books? Books may be charged to grants, loans and other scholarships in the College Bookstore. Universal Access recipients will receive a $500 book-only voucher to each eligible student. If the $500 book voucher is not used in the first semester that it is assessed, the balance can be forwarded to future semesters. Can I get financial aid if I am a part-time student? Yes, in most cases. When are financial aid refund checks produced? Refund checks are produced 14 calendar days after financial aid funds have been disbursed to the student’s account, which is February 19, 2020 for Spring 2020. All refund checks will be mailed to the address on file with the Admissions Office. What scholarships are available and how do I apply? Galveston College has scholarships available for students who fill out applications, meet qualifications, and are awarded through the scholarship committee. Galveston College offers several named scholarships for the fall and spring semesters. Contact the Financial Aid Office for details or visit the Financial Aid section of the college’s website.

After this date, the returned check will be sent to the District Attorney's office for legal action.

All students at Galveston College are given their own free Whitecaps email account, which includes free access to Microsoft Office 365. College personnel (including your instructors) use your Whitecaps email address to provide you with important information such as, “Please come by my office so we can discuss your latest assignment.” Since these are the kinds of emails a student does not want to miss, you need to activate your Whitecaps account. Simply go to the Galveston College webpage at www.gc.edu and click on the link that says, “OUTLOOK MAIL”. It’s that easy!

COMPUTER LABS/INTERNET ACCESS

Many, if not most, of your classes at Galveston College are “Web Enhanced” and require that you have access to the Internet for certain aspects of your course. Don’t worry if you do not have access to the Internet from your home, Galveston College has many computer labs that operate at convenient hours throughout the week.

CLASS ATTENDANCE

Students are expected to attend all lectures and laboratory periods, and an accurate record of each student’s class attendance is kept by each instructor for the duration of the course. Any student who has missed 10% of the total clock hours of instruction, not excused by the instructor, may be withdrawn from class by the instructor with a grade of “AWN”. Students are expected to report to class on time. At the discretion of the instructor, tardiness may be treated the same as an absence and the AWN policy may be applied.

COMMITTED TO SAFETY

Students who have experienced sexual assault, sexual violence, stalking, domestic violence, or other crimes may seek advice, assistance, and resources from the Vice President of Student Services, or the College’s Title IX Coordinator. The Title IX Coordinator’s duties include facilitating the complaint and investigation process. Individuals within these offices can assist the complainant with accessing medical or counseling services, advocacy services, social support services, legal services, and police services. Even in the absence of a formal complaint, the College may be able to provide assistance to the complainant with respect to his or her academic, living, transportation, or working situations. For example, a student might wish to explore changing a class or class time. For more information please visit the GC website: http://www.gc.edu/gc/Staying_Safe_on_Campus.asp REAL LIFE.
