This course explores the PC system from software, hardware, and operating system points of view. CompTIA A+ topics are covered and include system boards, processors, memory, power supplies, input/output (I/O) ports, internal adapters, printers, and basic networking devices. Software topics include client/server operating systems and installation, as well as licensing software application. CompTIA A+ testing vouchers must be purchased separately. Introduction to Networking

Designed as a class for students looking to pass the Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Networking Fundamentals exam. Discussed are the fundamentals of computer networking including the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, network architecture such as local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) are addressed. Other topics of discussion include network topologies, network protocols and services, routers and switches, wireless and access points, Virtual Private Networks (VPN), Security, and IP Addressing and Subnetting.

What are Stackable Credentials?

Our relationship with the National Healthcare Association allows us to offer a series of credentials that stack into a Patient Care Tech Certification. Students who complete our Nurse Aide, Phlebotomy, and EKG program are eligible to enroll in our Patient Care Tech Certification Course. This course is offered on an individual basis or in the late spring/summer terms.

Train to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in a long-term care facility. Explore the key components set by Texas Department of Health and Human Services. Course topics may include residents’ rights, communication, safety observation, reporting, and basic comfort and care. Emphasis is placed upon effective interaction with the health care teams. CPR Training is provided as part of the course but may be outside of stated class time. Students must enroll concurrently in both NURA 1001 (classroom 60 hrs) and NURA 2005 (clinical 40 hrs) to complete the program and be eligible for examination. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor, and may include day, evening, and/or weekend times. Please visit our website or page 7 to see the healthcare program requirements that must be met prior to enrolling in the course. Students must wear burgundy scrubs and white shoes to clinical. The student is responsible for transportation to and from the clinical sites. Textbook is included with tuition. Scrubs are available for purchase along with stethoscope and watch with a second hand in the bookstore. Students are responsible for scheduling certification testing and paying testing fees online; this is separate from tuition. This program is eligible for a payment plan.

Certified EKG Technician (CET) (10 Weeks) $899

Study the heart’s anatomy, function, how it produces electricity, and how one records this electricity with the EKG and telemetry monitor. This course also addresses the EKG changes of commonly seen diseases, especially coronary artery disease and the important heart rhythm disturbances. This course strives to prepare students to take the NHA certification exam to be EKG/Telemetry monitor technicians and introduces them to skills necessary for employment in exercises laboratories. Textbook and study guide are included in the tuition. Students must have a valid BLS-CPR card prior to enrolling in the course. The course includes one attempt at the certification exam. This exam will be scheduled by the instructor and is non-refundable and non-transferable. This program is eligible for a payment plan.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician (10 Weeks) $999

Get started as an entry-level phlebotomist, and prepare for your certification exam with the National Healthcare Association (NHA) Study the skills used in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods, including the proper techniques and safety precautions as well as an understanding of professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology related to obtaining specimens from adults, children and infants. Please visit our website or page 7 to see the healthcare program requirements which much be met prior to enrolling in the course. Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor and may include day, evening, and/or weekends. Textbook and study guide are included in the tuition. Burgundy scrubs, a lab coat and student patch are available for purchase in the bookstore, which must be worn during clinicals. Students are responsible for scheduling certification testing and the course includes one attempt at the certification exam. This exam will be scheduled by the instructor and is non-refundable and nontransferable. This program is eligible for a payment plan. Students are automatically enrolled in UTMB student health for the semester.

CPR & Program Requirements CPR Certification

Galveston College provides CPR Training for individuals, companies, groups, and organizations with flexible scheduling. We can train your employees in CPR to help them obtain a certification. Students are trained by our American Heart Association (AHA) instructors to help infants as well as adults in an emergency situation. Classes run for 4.5 hours and a textbook is included. Students who successfully complete the training receive a CPR course completion card recognized by the American Heart Association. Course book included. HEALTHCARE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

The State of Texas requires that all students in direct patient contact have obtained the immunizations below. In addition, we must abide by any requirements put forth by our clinical facilities. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain all immunizations in the proper time frame; students will not be allowed to enroll or begin clinicals unless all requirements are satisfied. Hep B: A series of 3 immunizations and documentation of a positive titer 4-6 weeks after the 3rd immunization (it takes a minimum of 4 months to complete the series of three immunizations). If you need to fast track you can request a TWINRIX combo vaccine. Influenza (flu): Proof of one dose within the last year. Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR): If you were born in or after 1957 you must have documentation of 2 doses or a titer result to show immunity. Tetanus (Tdap): Those in an active clinical setting should show one dose within 2 years; those with no direct patient contact must have within the last 10 years. Varicella (Chickenpox): You must have 2 immunizations, a report of positive titer, or report of illness date. Tuberculosis (TB) skin Test (PPD): Proof of a negative reading within 12 months of the end date of clinical, or proof of a teter positive for antibodies. Chest Xray is required only if there is a history of positive PPD test. Xray must be after the date of positive PPD. Additional Requirements: A High School Diploma or GED, current physical and a criminal background check. All students must provide a satisfactory criminal history, which can be obtained through the Texas Dept. of Public Safety website. (www.txdps.state.tx.us). The following may disqualify a person from these programs: felony convictions; misdemeanor convictions involving crimes against persons; felony deferred adjudications for the sale, possession, distribution or transfer of narcotics or controlled substances; and registered sex offenders. All students must provide a current BLS CPR card, with the exception of Nurse Aide.

EMS & Critical Care Training PHTLS: Trauma Life Support (16 Hours) $249

NAEMT’s Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is recognized around the world as the leading continuing education program for prehospital emergency trauma care. The mission of PHTLS is to promote excellence in trauma patient management by all providers involved in the delivery of prehospital care. PHTLS is developed by NAEMT in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma. The Committee provides the medical direction and content oversight for the PHTLS program. PHTLS courses improve the quality of trauma care and decrease mortality. The program is based on a philosophy stressing the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. It is based on the belief that, given a good fund of knowledge and key principles, EMS practitioners are capable of making reasoned decisions regarding patient care. PHTLS is the global gold standard in prehospital trauma education and is taught in 64 countries. PHTLS is appropriate for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, physician assistants, physicians, and other prehospital providers.

The All Hazards Disaster Response (AHDR) course demonstrates how to respond to the many types of disaster scenarios they may encounter, including natural disasters and infrastructure failings, fires and radiological events, pandemics, active shooter incidents, and other mass casualty events. AHDR educates participants on how to analyze potential threats in their area, assess available resources, and create a response plan that will save lives. AHDR is appropriate for any first responders.

Automotive Climate Control

This introductory course in wastewater collection and treatment includes a brief overview of the water cycle. Please register at least one week prior to class start date. Tuition and fees must be paid upon registration. Students must complete registration five business days prior to a course starting. Students can register online at www.gc.edu/CEregister with a valid MasterCard, Visa, Discover Card, or American Express. You may register in person by coming to the Continuing Education Office located on the first floor of Moody Hall, at 4015 Avenue Q, Galveston, TX 77550 We are open Monday through Friday from 8:00am – 5:00pm. You may register over the phone by calling the Continuing Education Office at 409-944-1344.

You may fax your completed registration form (this form is available on our website) to 409-944-1501, Attn: CE Dept. This is available 24 hours a day.

You may mail your registration form and send payment for tuition and fees to Galveston College, Continuing Education Registration, 4015 Avenue Q, Galveston, Texas 77550. Please do not send cash. Senior Discounts: Classes listed with a “*” are eligible for a 50% senior discount for those over the age of 65 and who live in-district. This discount is applied upon registration.

Class Cancellations, Room Changes, and Rescheduling: Courses with low enrollment prior to a start date are canceled prior to the start date. Students will be notified by phone or email when a class they are enrolled in has been canceled; however, we are sometimes unable to reach everyone. A refund of 100% is automatically processed upon cancellation of classes. To help avoid cancellations PLEASE REGISTER AT LEAST A WEEK PRIOR TO THE START DATE, and encourage your friends to register with you. Occasionally, canceled courses are rescheduled for a later start date, and you will be notified by phone when the opportunity presents itself. In the event of a class room change notice of the room change will be posted on the continuing education doors and the classroom that was originally listed. Refunds: Refunds prior to the start of class will be 100%. Refund requests should be made in person or by phone to 409-944-1344. Refund requests must be received during normal business hours and at least one business day prior to the start date of the class. When a class is canceled you will automatically be refunded the full course amount. There are NO REFUNDS GIVEN AFTER A COURSE HAS BEGUN. There are NO REFUNDS for ED2GO, ProTrain, or Language Authority online courses.

Parking: All students must have a valid GC parking sticker, (please pick up in the media center Rm: R-120) Visitors to campus must park in the visitors parking lot at the corner of Avenue Q and 39th St. Unpermitted cars parked in the Moody lot will be towed. Student ID Cards- Visitors: Enrolled students are required to posses a valid student ID card. These may be obtained in the media center (Rm: R-120) once you have your payment receipt. Visitors to campus and those who are only here for a short contract training class, must display a visitor name tag on their person. These are available in the CE offices or from your instructor. Smoke Free Campus: Galveston College is a smoke free campus. Smoking (including e-cigs) is strictly prohibited in all buildings on the campus grounds including the parking areas.

Classroom Conduct: Students are expected to conduct themselves in the classroom and/or laboratory in a manner that is conducive to good academic progress. Failure to comply with the lawful direction of a faculty member, teaching assistant or instructor may be a disruption for all students enrolled in the class. Disruptive conduct is considered a serious offense. Faculty reserve the right to remove a student from a class for just cause. Students removed may be referred to the VP of Student Services for disciplinary action. Cell Phone Use: Cell phone use is strictly prohibited during all class/lab sessions. In an emergency, please step outside to avoid disruption.

FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), was established to protect the privacy rights of all students. FERPA specifies the types of student information, which can be released to the public without a students expressed consent and specifies the persons and agencies that may receive other information, which according the FERPA, a college may release to the public without a student's permission and is referred to as “Directory Information.” The information included in the FERPA definition includes name, address, telephone, date and place of birth, degrees earned, date, major, and field of study, academic classification, dates of attendance, number of semester hours in progress, and attained to date, previous high school and college attended, and weight and height of member of athletic teams. Students may request that Galveston College withhold their directory information from the general public. To do so, students must fill out the appropriate form with the Admissions Office. Record Of Completion And CEU’s: Nationally recognized CEU’s may be awarded on certain approved occupation-related courses. One CEU is awarded for every 10 contact hours. All courses will be given a certificate of completion. It is up to the individual student to see if these courses are eligible for CEU’s.
