Heroes START HERE
Meet the crew of Galveston College alumni on the front lines of UTMB at Galveston’s busy Blocker Burn Unit, treating patients from around the world who land in the hospital with life-changing burn injuries. Nurse manager Jason Sheaffer, nurse clinician Shademetria “Sha” Kyle, and charge nurse Jennifer Haglund all began their healthcare careers in the Nursing program at Galveston College.

#BeFree
In addition to his role as Nurse manager, GC alum Sheaffer is an innovator who utilized the 3-D printer in UTMB’s MakerSpace Lab to develop a standalone shower system that clamps on the bathtub inside the patient’s room. This enables them to irrigate themselves as they progress through recovery, easing their pain and expediting the healing process. Haglund comes from a family of medical professionals who inspired her to follow their path. When Jennifer made the decision to pursue a career in physical therapy, encouragement from her aunt, Dr. Nancy Hughes, spurred her on. After entering the nursing program at GC in 2000, she went on to UTMB to specialize in burn unit care. Kyle earned found her path to nursing through her struggles with asthma as a youngster. The caring healthcare professionals she encountered during her many hospital admissions made her realize that nursing was to be her calling as well. Galveston College was the springboard to her career at UTMB at Galveston, which now spans over 21 years.
