King Ubu by Alfred Jarry in a new version by Vincent Woods Directed and Designed by Monica Frawley Lighting by Tina MacHugh Music by Denis Clohessy
Savage, Hilarious, Timeless, one of the great plays on political greed and folly. Ma and Pa Ubu kill the King and become rulers of their world. The chaos they unleash echoes many of the terrible wars of Europe. Jarry’s infamous play of 1896 provoked horror and wonder, shifting the boundaries of what theatre could be and would become.
This new version by Vincent Woods captures all the zest and zany energy of the original, but gives an immediacy and modern flavour to the timeless story of the Ubus and their revolution. This is a rare chance to see one of the most remarkable plays of Europe – a savagely funny black comedy with an enduring relevance. Monica Frawley brings a mad universe to vivid life, creating a visual spectacle – total theatre, frantic and entertaining. Original songs, live music, a lot of laughs and a horrid, uncomfortable feeling that the Ubus are alive and well and forever in wait around the corner. This production contains strong language.

The Gimmick Dael Orlandersmith
Directed By Angus Farquhar a solo performance for six characters
The Gimmick is an emotional and inspirational one-woman show written and performed by Pulitzer Prize nominee Dael Orlandersmith. Compelling. A creation of beauty. Charting the experience of a young girl growing up in Harlem in the 1960s during the civil rights movement, Orlandersmith’s own alter ego, Alexis, is a girl with a passion to better herself and a talent for writing. Sensing a kindred spirit in frustrated artist Jimmy, the pair join forces and form a bond they hope will never be broken, yet will be with tragic inevitability. Orlandersmith’s writing for theatre is a unique fusion of traditional narrative, poetry and rap. Her incisive, amusing, abrasive and intense writing, building on her experiences growing up as an outsider in Harlem, have brought glowing critiques in America and Europe. She was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for her play Yellowman in 2002.

paines plough in association with mark Ravenhill
Product A new play by Mark Ravenhill Directed by Lucy Morrison Performed by Mark Ravenhill Amy is a hot young starlet. Now all she needs is the script which will save her from B movie hell. A script which balances artistic integrity with blockbuster bucks. Mark thinks he’s got the perfect pitch – a script which combines a torrid love story with the dark spectre of terrorism and big, big explosions. If he can only persuade Amy, he’s got the perfect Product.
Ravenhill takes a satirical look at film clichés, and combines them with topical references, wrapping a ridiculous torrid love story within the context of the threat of terrorism. The Independent
Mark Ravenhill is one of Britain’s best-known playwrights. He has been commissioned and produced by Out Of Joint, Royal Court Theatre, National Theatre, Donmar Warehouse and Paines Plough. His plays include the worldwide smash-hit Shopping and Fucking and his latest play The Cut which opened at the Donmar Warehouse in March this year.
In Conversation Mark will be joined in conversation by author John Deeney to discuss his life and work on Thursday 20 July at 2pm in Druid Theatre. As distant from what now passes for country in the genre's capital as is possible, and whose ambitions far outreach the rigid aesthetic of contemporary Americana, Lambchop have made a career of confounding expectations. New Orleans All Stars Some of America’s finest soul and R’n’B treasures feature in the New Orleans All Star Party. Singer, pianist, songwriter, arranger and producer and New Orleans native Allen Toussaint has been making hit records for over forty years. His massive influence on American music reaches deep into the idioms of rhythm and blues, pop, country, musical theatre, blues and jazz. He has recently recorded a new album with Elvis Costello. Allen was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. The Charmain Neville Band features some of the best musicians in New Orleans with the high-flying, high-styled vocalizing member of the Crescent City's illustrious Neville family, while singer/pianist Marcia Ball knows how to raise roofs and tear down walls with her infectious, intelligent and deeply emotional brand of southern boogie, rollicking, roadhouse blues and heartfelt ballads. David Mach Hell Bent
One of Britain’s best-known artists David Mach, who has undertaken a number of high profile public art commissions in the UK, exhibits one of his unique public sculptures, Hell Bent, at the plaza by the entrance to the new Galway City Museum. Hell Bent consists of an enormous figure based on the body of the sculptor, whose mouth fires flames up to 20 feet in the air, creating a breathtaking spectacle. While multiple mass-produced objects, most notably magazines, newspapers and car tyres, have been used consistently by Mach throughout his career, here he brings together a more traditional fusion of fibreglass and steel. Exciting, amusing and spectacular Hell Bent retains the elements of humour and social comment that are so apparent in his other works.

Hughie O’Donoghue The Deep
An exhibition of epic paintings on the theme of the sea, its depths and meanings. The vast Fairgreen Gallery space in the centre of Galway provides the opportunity to bring together a series of colossal paintings, none of which have been shown in Ireland before. The visceral, physical and painterly qualities of these works are shown to great effect in this venue with its great height and abundance of natural light. The paintings reference history and myth and include the 6 metre tall Tomb of the Diver as well as Porces and Chariboea, a painting originally begun in Italy in 1986 and, after many transformations, completed in the artist’s studio in Ireland in 2003.The bulk of the work, however, is connected in a direct way to this place and the here and now with the recurring motif of the rusting wreck of The Plassy which is beached on the Island of Inis Oírr. This is an image that has repeatedly occurred in the artists work over many years and in many different guises. In these paintings the wreck has been re-floated and appears as a ghostly image seen from the sea itself. An exhibition of smaller related paintings can be seen at Áras Éanna Arts Centre, Inis Oírr, a short walk from the wreck of The Plassy.

Ori Gersht The Forest
Peter Blake
Ori Gersht's interest in exploring landscapes embedded with both personal and historic resonance was the genesis for this film. The Forest surrounds Kolomyia, Ukraine, and is a remaining fragment of the once vast primeval forest that covered much of continental Europe. Much mythologized and idealised in the period of the Enlightenment, the area was to bear witness to appalling atrocities during World War II. Gersht's connection to the region is that his relatives were to find brief and harsh haven here from Nazi persecution. Commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella in association with The Photographers' Gallery, London.

Alphabet Alphabet is a set of bold and colourful silkscreen prints, one for each letter of the alphabet, reflecting his humour, nostalgia and eclecticism. Peter Blake emerged in the 1960s as one of the leading British Pop Artists; he is most famous, perhaps, for his cover design of The Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper album in 1967.

Galway’s Fisheries Tower on the mouth of the River Corrib was used for drift net fishing up to the 1970s and also served as a lookout for fish stocks on the river. Now a museum the space lends a poignant context for this series of new paintings and photographs. Many of the images are of the annual excessive growth of algae and the detritus found in the rivers and lakelands of the west of Ireland. Deirdre O’Mahony was born in Limerick and studied at the RTC Galway, St Martins School of Art, (BA) and the Crawford College (MA), Cork. She is researching her MPhil/PhD through practice at the University of Brighton titled The trouble with beauty; aesthetics, ecology and the legacy of the picturesque in relation to the contemporary western Irish landscape.

Victoria McCommack Artspace Studios Ex Cathedra: A multi media work exploring the nature of balance and power Chimera Victoria Mc Commack’s work seeks to uncover the fragility of individual experience behind the masks worn in society. Peeling back the layers of beliefs learned about ourselves and our bodies to overcome the vulnerability of the self. In exploring objects and places as metaphors for the self and differing states of mind, the live element of performance is an essential link in her work between these metaphors and the immediacy of real life.
Artspace is pleased to present Chimera, an eclectic exhibition of painting, print, multi-media, installations, and live performance art, featuring the work of their 27 current resident artists, providing the perfect opportunity to view a showcase of Galway’s most exciting contemporary visual artists alongside some of its more established ones.
