THE SUNSET LIMITED

“…nothing short of dazzling...astonishingly effecting…powerful” Chicago Tribune

By Cormac McCarthy Directed by Sheldon Patinkin On a subway platform in New York City, an ex-con from the South saves the life of an intellectual atheist who wasn’t looking for salvation. Now, the reformed murderer-turned-saviour ventures to offer salvation of another kind, bringing the failed suicide victim back to his Harlem apartment for an articulate and moving debate about truth, fiction and belief.

“The two actors feverishly engage each other, and they do so with intensity and humour.” Chicago Sun-Times

Austin Pendleton and Freeman Coffey star in this compelling new work by Cormac McCarthy, the acclaimed author of All the Pretty Horses and No Country for Old Men, who brings his trademark terse, masterful voice to this new dramatic work. His latest novel The Road has been awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

IRISH PREMIERE New music, visual art and fashion collide through Petronio’s choreography and dancers, producing powerful performances in a visual feast for the senses.

STEPHEN PETRONIO COMPANY Bloom (Petronio/Rufus Wainwright) Bud Suite (Petronio/Rufus Wainwright) The Rite Part (Petronio/Stravinsky)

Petronio has collaborated with one of the world’s leading musicians and composers Rufus Wainwright, on two major pieces to be presented at Galway Arts Festival. Wainwright's Bloom is a specially commissioned score arranged for his own multi-layered vocals and will feature a live choir while Bud Suite sees Petronio’s dancers negotiating their way through ambiguous, sensuous encounters to the urban love lyrics of Wainwright songs. Petronio also showcases one of his classic dances The Rite Part set to music by Igor Stravinsky.

“His eight stunning company members still perform as if they have titanium joints that they take apart and grease every night.” New York Village Voice

The Oxford Dictionary defines the word as: a person who has returned, especially supposedly from the dead. Life’s but a walking shadow: if there is a world which defines him it is this one-of penumbra. Once he had a name: but its outline has blurred, belonging as it did to a world of sumptuous and saturated colour. He might have been a character bestriding John Hinde’s sixties photographic heaven. But now he moves cautiously - as if pursued, hunted. As he probes his way across the heart’s moorland landscape. Haunted by a monochrome vision of the past. Which, as Faulkner has written, being far from irrelevant, is not even past. In this supernova of darkness, The Revenant continues, nightly, to plead his case. He might be lost in a Rembrandt etching. Only one thing remains constant: the grey colour of the tombstone they’ve erected over his name. And over those whose voices once lit up the little town. Which no longer exists. For the grey of this play is that which borders a memoriam card. Which this time, now reads: the small town, the end of history. Artwork by Peter Trant

In Memoriam: For Those Who Fall in Time of War The Brodsky Quartet are at the forefront of the international chamber-music scene and also known for their pioneering work with performers, artists and composers, from Elvis Costello to Björk and John Tavener and Dave Brubeck. The centre piece of this evening’s programme is Paul Barker’s powerful work In Memoriam: For Those Who Fall in Times of War, inspired by the demise one by one of three members of the Sarajevo String Quartet during the war in Bosnia. Programme includes Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Zelbejan.

A major star on the World music scene, Cesaria Evora is known as the Queen of “Morna”, the Cape Verde island's sweet soulful version of the blues which fuses West African rhythms and European sensibilities with Caribbean and Brazilian influences. Gifted with amazing artistic longevity, she has been compared to both Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday as she recreates the dreamy atmosphere of her native island home with a luscious blend of intoxicating vocals and compelling lyrics. ELIADES OCHOA with Cuarteto Patria from the Buena Vista Social Club

The return of the last sonero. Buena Vista Social Club’s Eliades Ochoa, the great Cuban guitar and vocal legend, is long considered one of the most important soneros of all times and a remarkable champion of Cuban traditional music. Ochoa’s international profile went into overdrive as one of the stars of the Ry Cooder recording and Wim Wenders’ film Buena Vista Social Club. In the 21st century, with his band Cuarteto Patria, Ochoa remains the hub and shining light of acoustic, string and percussion-driven Cuban song.

“Best live band in the Country” The Guardian

ALABAMA 3 Alabama 3 know all about being outsiders. They’ve taken an outlaw approach since the day they first emerged from the free party scene to combine acid house with country and western. Across four deeply infectious albums they’ve made impossible musical collision sound as natural as the swamp. Having gained worldwide acclaim for their theme song of the infamous TV show The Sopranos Alabama 3’s exhilarating live shows have long become the stuff of legend.

SEASICK STEVE Legendary Blues hero rides in to town! Ex-hobo Seasick Steve out of Oakland, Cali is unique. His live show has converted everyone fortunate enough to witness it. He wowed The Big Chill, Belladrum and Open House Festivals (amongst others) last year and tore up Jools Holland’s Hootenanny. His credentials are impeccable, (Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Modest Mouse amongst many!), yet he favours pointing you towards the future with his blues-based storytelling anthems. Come see the marvel that is Seasick Steve as he performs tracks from his current album Dog House Music.

MUSIC FOR MINORITIES The star of New York’s Next Wave Festival 2006 makes his Irish debut with Music for Minorities, a fascinating integration of film, music and performance. This must-see event reflects the trademark blues style of his roots in Louisiana and the Southern delta. On split screens, moving stories are told in fragments as Rouse plays guitar and sings songs accompanied by a soundscape of percussion and multiple guitars.

“A composer many believe to be the best of his generation.” THE NEW YORK TIMES

High art meets popular culture as the mix and match aesthetic of the early 80's Manhattan music and art scene are brought together in this entirely original and affecting method of storytelling that has been compared by critics to hearing Bob Dylan for the first time, in terms of a totally new and different sound and approach.

Richie Egan is not a man to take things easy. As animated bassist with the magnificently hard-rocking Redneck Manifesto, he has caught the eye and ear of many a concertgoer. If you had any doubt about the current superiority of the Swedes in modern pop music, then SKWBN will be the ones to finally sway you. The undeniable charm of Suburban Kids is apparent right off the bat, they have limitless energy combining lightly plucked guitars and swirling synthesizers, with the odd touch of melancholia and a hop, skip and a jump.

While it is, in theory, possible to describe their music, many scientists do not advise it, claiming that any attempts to categorise The Warlords would cause irrevocable damage to both the environment and the collective unconscious! Suffice to say that they produce pantomime rock of the highest order, their show is incredible and never to be missed.

MUNDY Mundy’s talent was obvious from the very beginning with his debut album Jellylegs earning great critical acclaim and a worldwide audience.

BUCK 65

Mundy’s second album, 24 Star Hotel, proved even more popular than his debut and put the singer on the map as one of the country’s finest songwriters and live performers, spawning the massive anthems, Mexico and July. Raining Down Arrows followed in 2004 with Live & Confusion, the brand new CD/DVD set from Mundy, perfectly capturing the much-loved singer and his band at the peak of their powers.

Buck 65 is old. He started out as a b-boy back in '82 while living in Small Town, Nova Scotia, but today this no-nonsense white boy is the Jimmy Castor of hip hop. Handling production, lyrics and DJ-ing duties by himself, Buck may be the man to singlehandedly rescue hip-hop.

Galway Arts Centre and Galway Arts Festival present

SEAN LYNCH Sean Lynch continues to investigate and shine a spotlight on a wide range of forgotten historical subjects. Through research, photographs and installations he discloses and builds upon fragile stories and objects, magnifying traces of their often-idiosyncratic existence. Marking a moment in the artist’s ongoing investigations into, and recovery of, overlooked cultural artefacts, the exhibition will present a new project: to find the Island of Hy Brazil. Lying off the west coast of Ireland, it was last seen by author TJ Westropp in 1872. Other presentations will feature folklorist Eddie Lenihan and the sculptures of Joseph Beuys.

Exploring the hardships of post-Taliban Afghanistan, the break up of Yugoslavia, the conflict that continues to destroy the lives of the people of Kashmir, Afghanistan and Iraq and the Israel-Palestine conflict, Women War Photographers features the work of five of the world’s leading photographers documenting war and conflict in different regions of the globe. As we view the work of Alexandra Boulat, Ami Vitale, Kate Brooks, Heidi Levine and Paula Bronstein we discover that no matter where, when or with whom, armed conflict always has the same destructive effect on a population caught in its way.

AIDEEN BARRY AVALANCHE OPERA ASPHYXIA A performance film High-pitch resonant sounds are said to cause uncanny reactions both effecting people and the landscape. Aideen Barry has created a site-specific performance piece on the frozen glacial Lake Louise in Banff, Canada - the site of extraordinary avalanches. The artist uses her high pitch soprano notes to try to affect a shift in the landscape.

It is said that if we drown our lives flash before us in a series of merging memories. Playing with this concept, the artist Aideen Barry has created, composed and choreographed together with Tanya McCrory and Cathal Murphy, a performance installation of dance, sound and animated visuals that will physically narrate a ghostly action of drowning. CARMEL M. CLEARY PASSAGE - FIRE & ICE Hand printed B&W photographs, some over 8ft high, inspire the viewer to imagine that they can walk right in to explore the hidden depths of the sensuous corkscrew canyons of Arizona whose myriad colours are a fiery reflection of the desert above. Also on show, especially for this year’s Festival, is a selection of images from the glaciers of Iceland, where the stunning blue ice creates a breathtaking contrast of Fire & Ice.
