Like John Lee Hooker, Brown seems to get better with age, and certainly shames performers decades younger than him. Steeped in country and blues, his music is littered with funk, jazz, r&b, zydeco and rock and this Is most apparent on hls recent The Man release. His recordings only hint at his prowess on stage however, and Brown's live shows are legendary for their incendary quality. This promises to be a four-alarm chilll show, and It's more likely that the roof of the Big Top will be in danger of being sent Into space. You've been warned!. A rousing finale for Festival 1995 Is guaranteed at The Big Day Out as a host of great performers, including Michelle Shocked and the Grammy Award-winning Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, will have us all stomping at the Big Top. T here'll be surprise guest appearances, and a wild old time is assured. T his will be Michelle Shocked's third visit to Galway, and backed this time by Hothouse Flowers stalwarts Fiachna O'Braonaln and Peter O'Toole, it promises to be a memorable show. Som in East Texas, Shocked was discovered by Cooking Vinyl maestro Pete Lawrence in 1986. His Walkman recording of her singing and playing was released as The Texas Cam(J/ire Ta(Jes, and was followed 1988 by the release of Short Sharp Shoc�d. Two more releases followed and last year she produced a brand new collection of songs, which was sold only at her concerts. Her musical diversity reflects her travels; she has "done" folk, blues, swing, grunge, country, bluegrass and rock. A true musical magpie, she laces her songs with Irony and humour, warmth and tenderness, and she's rightly gained a reputation as a powerful performer. Though he was born In Louisiana, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown grew up in neighbouring Texas. A professional musician for more than SO years (he was 16 when he joined Howard Spencer and his Gay Swlngsters in 1940), he shows no signs of slowing down. He's constantly touring and

array of material and vocalists they've remained true to the music throughout. As solo performers the many past and present members have had crltlcal and commercial success (the backbone of the hugely successful Woman's Heart album was provided by Mary Black. Dolores Keane and Maura O'Connell - all De Dannan alumni), but on July 22 it'll be a case of the whole being more than the sum of the parts. And while the term 'supergroup' Is often over used and lighdy used, it perfectly describes De Dannan. T he concert on July 22 promises to be one of the undoubted highlights of this year's programme.

Spearhead is the latest brainchild of rapper Michael Frantl formerly of Disposable Heroes of Hlphoprisy fame. The 'Heroes' came to prominence with their ground breaking HifJocrisy is the Greatest luxury album featuring such classics as Television, the drug of the Nation and California Uber Alles. T he social issues of a 90's America were explored in a fashion which was new, innovative and refreshing. Spearhead contlnues Franti's desire to talk about what matters, this time augmented by an 7 piece live band. A comblnatlon of rap, reggae, jazz and funk makes for a sound which is already drawing much acclaim.
Along with Planxty and The Bothy Band, De Dannan led the Irish music renaissance of the J 970's, While the others are long gone, De Dannan is still going strong. On Saturday July 22 they will be bringing it all back home at the Festival Big Top as they celebrate their 21st birthday. Many past members, including Mary Black, Dolores Keane and Mitrtfn O'Connor will also be on hand for the festivities. Unlike rock bands, Irish traditional groups tend to - are expected to almost - have a fluid and changing lineup, and De Dannan are the exception. Somehow, four months later, the article emerged as Vengeance, a 350 page crime thriller set in Manhattan and lnlshbofin, "two tiny islands with very bad roads", and Is now In pre-publication In New York. The book's hero is not a hero at all, just a guy who likes a laugh and a drink. who wishes he was another half Inch taller, and really shouldn't be In the vicinity at all, "a bit like everybody else". Quite how this happened, Liam is not sure, but enjoyed the process so much he is now writing a second, set In London and Galway. The Orphean Ensemble was founded by the young Australian soprano, Gabrielle Fisher, and Canadian trumpeter Anthony Aarons, both now living in London and performing widely throughout Britain and abroad. Gabrielle Is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatory and has sung in Asia, France, Paris, Germany and Austria In both opera and recital. She has also been featured as soloist with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. Anthony moved to England when he was ten and studied at the Royal College of Music in London. He has a busy solo career and in 1992 was one of the top ten young trumpet soloists at the Prague Spring International Competition. They are joined by Galway musician Jane O'Leary in a programme of trios, duets and solos from both the Baroque era and the twentleth century.

Lindy Hoppers dazzle audiences with their technique and versatility. Based in England, the Jiving Lindy Hoppers are an award-winning dance company of international repute. Founded in 1984 they have toured extensively throughout the U.K., Europe, the USA and Japan. The company has received innumerable awards and extensive coverage both In England and America. The Company's name comes from the "Lindy Hop" which is the original form of the jive dancing that developed In Harlem In the late I 920's. A Story of Faith and Famine. The Apostasy of Matthew Sullivan depicts the story of a small West Cork community and is a polemic against bigotry, tribalism and racialism. It sets out to put a human face on the 'Soupers' of Tooremoore, some 615 converts from Catholicism to Protestantism who built Teampall na mBocht with their bare hands during the freezing famine winter of 1847, and whose descendants down through the years have had to endure a bitter and false tradition. The play also celebrates the heroism of two Engllshmen who did their duty to the death in the service of the poor of Ireland In that apalling time of the Great Famine. This account of what happened ln the tiny West Cork inlet in 1847 Is Inescapably an allegory on the sad history of Protestant and Catholic In Northern Ireland but Its tolerant and ecumenical message will hopefully, find a wann welcome In the Ireland of 1995.

Jim Nolan's award-winnlng play enlists the help of Shakespeare, love, death and the dark humour of small town Ireland for this fascinating study of love, doubt and redemption. Mc Keever, the enigmatic undertaker, attempts to draw the community together for a production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. However, the gradual disappearance of his cast, the impending closure of the local Protestant Church and the return of his fonner lover throw the production into a comic and sometimes tragic state of instability.
Theatre Arts and Perfonnance Studies at Plymouth University has been established for over thirty years and has gained an excellent reputation for work which Is at the forefront of Performance research. Song of Songs originated as a compilation of love songs between a bride and groom on their wedding day, so reverberations of this 'Giving of self' provide the point of departure for the show.

July 2Dt 6.00pm Patrick McCibe,ls best known for his award-winning book The Butcher Boy, which was the winner of the Irish Times/Aer Ungus Literature Prize In 1992 and was shortlisted for the Booker. Prlze In the same year. His critically acclaimed play Fronk Pig says Hello was based on The Butcher 8oy and was first performed at the Dublin Theatre Festival In 1992. Mc Cabe was born In Co. Monaghan In 1955. In 1979 he received the Hennessy award for a short story. He has also had two of his short stories broadcast on RTE, and several of his plays were broadcast by the BBC and RTE. His latest work confirms Patrick Mc Cabe's position as the contemporary master of the humourous macabre.

In that light perhaps the term 'geographical poetry' could be coined and applied to the work of Mary O'Malley and Terry McDonagh. At first glance their work could not seem to be more dissimilar • O'Malley lives In the Moycullen Gaeltacht, while McDonagh lives In Germany, yet what links them Is their ability to articulate a sense of place. They write of their relationship to their surroundings, and In their very personal work we can all find common ground. Mary O'Malley was bom In Connemara. A graduate of UCG, she taught In Lisbon for eight years before returning to Ireland. Her use of language Is superb; economical, precise and highly evocative. Terry McDonagh, a native of Klltlmagh, has been living and working In Hamburg since the 1980's. Much of his poetry Is concerned with coming to terms with living In a new place, with a new language and a new culture. He, like O'Malley, finds the definition of place in all that he experiences around him. You can be assured that you'll find yourselves recognising your home place In the work of these gifted poets.

Kyntrich Last Time At World's End

An exhibition of sculpture made out of waste materials which will be exhibited at several different outdoor sites on consecutive days during the festival. The artist Kyntrich describes the underlying theme as follows. "Early each morning work is placed at a site, as though with the tide, minded during the day removed at night, as though out with the tide. In this way, the materials are experienced according to beach context, transiently and may become more effective as Ideas rather than as permanent objects". Kyntrick is a graduate of N.CAD. and a co founder of SA Arts Centre Dun Laoghaire. The work for this exhibition was made at the Firestation Studios, Dublin I and the artist ls currently based at World's End, The Dublin l City Centre Studios.

This is an exhibition of the work of Individuals of diverse styles and artistic concerns. What they share ln common Is a determined and adamant sense of survival as woman artists and people pursuing creative Interests in a rural environment. This has become an annual event. Dolores Lyne lives In Claregalway and her concerns have been for the local landscape. Her environment has been her Inspiration. Her latest work is a celebration of the Galway and Conemarra region. Jay Murphy on the other hand concentrates on her more intimate surroundings, be they her home or the people who pass thorough It. Her works are wonderful and rejoice ln the warmth and atmosphere Inherent in the country and people of county Galway. Leonie King uses the texture of paint to communicate her response to her homeland, Eternity and the endurance of man and the landscape are the fundamental themes underlying these abstract works. Siobhan Piercy's works were made ln the past year. But the Images themselves are drawn from her experiences in 1993 when she was living in Rome. The prints allude to the frescos of the early Italian Renaissance. Titles combine with images to suggest narratives and the effect that is created Is both evocative and ambiguous.

Is the Galway Film Fleadh's seventh birthday and It Is celebratlng with an IIICtended run and fuller programme designed to whet even the most Jaded appetite. Eight days of action-packed film-mania can be expected between July 16th and July 23rd when over I 00 films wlff be screened In Galway's Claddagh Palace Cinema. 1995 Theme One of this year's main sections Is Thrillers, and the Fleadh Is featuring a wide selection of films, old and new, that wlH have cinema goers everywhere on the edge of their seats. Movies like Duel, starring Dennis Weaver, in a tense first feature from Director Steven Spielberg; Hitchcock's Vertigo, starring James Stewart and Kim Novak and Rope, again with James Stewart in a homosexual murder mystery. Also featured in the Thrillers section are John Sturges' Bad Day at Blackrock with Spencer Tracy and Lee Marvin; Assault on Precinct 13 from Director John Carpenter; Martin Rltt's The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, filmed in Dublin's Ardmore Studios; and the Coen brothers' 1983 first feature Blood Simple. Fleadh Tribute The Fleadh is delighted to welcome and pay tribute to the great American film director Arthur Penn. Arthur Penn and his movies have mapped out an accurate chronology of modem America; the wild West in Little Big Man: the depression In Bonnie and Clyde; and the search for a tolerant and pacifist life style 1n Alice's Restaurant. These films, along with the taut Night Moves, starring Gene Hackman, will be screened. The I 99S Fleadh will screen a host of movies from first time directors, Including Peter Hall's Delinquent: Robert Golden's Beg; Ngozi Onwurah's Welcome to the Terrordome and Peter Mackenzie lltten's To Die For. a camp comedy romance starring the very funny Tony Slattery and DIiiie Keane. New International Releases The Fleadh Is also a showcase for new International releases, Including Fridrik Thor Fridriksson's Movie Days and Fun from Director Rafal Zlellnskl. The winner of two Special Jury Prizes at the 1994 Sundance Festival, Fun with Its lean script and superb performances, Is an Impressive feature that Is a frenzied odyssey Into the emptiest comers of the teenage wasteland. Radio Star Introduces archive material and all the sounds of the forties - Glenn Miller, Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters. Salvaged Uves ls an unusual documentary which relates the progress and failures of the unique Vocational Deep Sea Diver Training Programme at California's Chino State Prison. Death and Taxes ls the extraordinary story of 63 year old Gordon Kahl, a north Dakota farmer who became America's most wanted fugitive. New Irish Work Film fans can look forward to a host of new Irish shorts and features, as well as Irish and International animation In the special Fleadh screenings on Friday, Sawrday and Sunday. This section of the Fleadh Is a must for young Irish film-makers and talent spotters from abroad. The Fleadh's famous cult classics will once again be a big attraction in I 995. Screened at midnight, al fresco, the Cult Classics are all those films you've always wanted to see and never got around to. There ls no cover charge for those hardy souls capable of withstanding the caprices of a Galway summer. The highly successful Film Shop continues this year, July 19th-21st, providing a one stop-shop for Irish film-makers to pitch and peddle their projecu to European and American producers, financiers, agents, buyers and distributors. New At This Year's Fleadh The under I Ss will be catered for this year too when the new three day Junior Film Fleadh bursts onto the scene between July 18th and 20th, with a great selection of national and International films, Including Scott Wiper's European Premiere Captain Jack. The director, star and hero of Captain Jack, Scott Wiper, will attend the Fleadh. Also Included In the Junior Fleadh are: The Sky Palace, a beautifully shot Icelandic film b) Thorstelnn Jonsson; and Francis Ford Coppola's tense clwlc about high school gangs, The Outsider. With an Incisive wit, Kate sings the songs that Hollywood has never heard, and amongst all the characters, occasionally plays herself In her first live solo show. Kate Robbins has had a multi-faceted career. She Is best known as the female voice of Spitting Image - she was the voice behind Fergle, the Queen, Princess Diana. Princess Ann, Madonna, Tina Turner, Bjork and Barbara Cartland. She has been a presenter on GMTV, This Momint and That's LJ(e, and has had her own television show produced by Granado Television. Kate was also the resident presenter of the award-winning Radio 4 comedy series Look Back at the Future. Directed by John Thomson and written by Kate Robbins.

A famlltar face on the cult TV shows Hove I Got News For You? and Whose Une Is It Anyway?, Jeremy Hardy live Is a rare pleasure and one definitely not to be missed. Better known in recent times for his outstanding shows for BBC Radio 4 (Jeremy Hardy speaks to the Notion) he Is still one of the funniest live performers around and this Is one show that comedy connoisseurs should not miss.
