The Eighth Galway Fleadh opens with the much-awaited Irish Premiere of David Keating's Last of the High Kings. Based on the Ferdia MacAnna novel, the film is a coming of age story set in 1977 Dublin, to the music of Thin Lizzy, and follows the fortunes of Frankie, his parents, friends and lovers. Stephen Frears introduces the third film in Roddy Doyle's Barrytown trilogy, still hot from Cannes, The Van. Starring Colm Meaney, The Van follows the hilarious adventures of Larry and Bimbo throughout the summer of Italia '90. More Irish Premieres include The Disappearance of Finbar, directed by Sue Clayton and scripted by Dermot Bolger. A film about people's dreams, Disappearance deals with the consequences of Finbar's debunking from his Dublin estate, and of a mythic journey to the North Pole. A First Feature Script, Trojan Eddie by acclaimed Wexford writer Billy Roche, and starring Richard Harris, is the story of a small town hustler who becomes entangled in a web of deceit when he crosses into a sub-culture of settled travellers and bare knuckled fighters. The Sun, the Moon and the Stars by director Geraldine Creed, starring Gina Moxley, Jason Donovan and Angie Dickinson, focuses on the break-up of a marriage through the eyes of a child, a mysterious stranger in a seaside resort, and a little light witchcraft. Boys and Men is a chilling 40 minute psychological drama from the award winning northerner Sean Hinds, of Pan Loaf fame. On a lighter note the Fleadh welcomes the first cult feature to come out of Northern Ireland, The Eliminator. Directed by Enda Hughes, this low-budget all action fantasy spoof promises to be a high-energy roller-coaster from beginning to end.

New romantic comedy

Flirting With Disaster which closed the Cannes Film Festival. Starring Ben Stiller,

Patricia Arquette, Alan Alda, Mary Tyler Moore and George Segal, it's the wildly original contemporary '90's comedy that everyone's been waiting for. Party Girl, a breezy 1990's slacker film directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer and featuring Parker Posey as the girl who likes to have a good time. The film casts an honest and amusing eye on life and love for the twenty-somethings of New York. Romantic comedy also includes Australian director Paul Cox's lust and Revenge. Starring Nicholas Hope, the film satirises art, new age religion and corporate money in a story of domestic and corporate manipulation. The Israeli film Santa Clara looks at how a young girl must choose between her supernatural powers and her first foray into love. The Fleadh pays tribute this year to Antonia Bird, who will present her controversial works Priest and Safe, and her latest work Mad Love. Antonia will also participate in this year's debate on 'Women in Film'.

European and International Premieres include Street life, directed by Fleadh regular Karl Francis. Karl will present his much talked about new movie which follows a young single mother living on a council estate, and examines the effects of betrayal and lack of care. Jude, filmed in Edinburgh, is a contemporary story based on the Thomas Hardy novel, 'Jude The Obscure', and will be introduced by its director, another Fleadh regular, Michael Winterbottom. Brothers In Trouble follows a group of illegal Pakistani immigrants living in the UK. Udayan Prasad's Premiere is a film about survival in a foreign land. Nothing To Lose is Eric Bross's stunning directorial debut, inspired by Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets. Set against a background of suburban New Jersey, the film provides a highly emotional exploration of camaraderie, rivalry and betrayal amongst three youngsters.

Documentaries

A Perfect Candidate is David Van Taylor and R J Cutler's insightful feature

documentary into the 1994 Virginia Senate race between Lt. Col. Oliver North and Senator Charles Robb, and features unprecedented behind the scenes footage. The lives of celebrated women writers, artists, photographers and editors are explored in Paris Was A Woman, an insightful documentary on the remarkable community of women who flocked to Paris's Left Bank between the two World Wars. Lindsey Merrison will introduce her documentary Our Burmese Days at the Fleadh. The documentary follows Lindsey's mother and uncle returning to their birthplace of Burma, exploring their identity and Eurasian heritage. A Beach Near Belfast directed by Henri-Francois Imbert is a documentary based upon the true story of a film-maker's journey to return an unfinished film to its original owner. Homosexuality is examined in The Celluloid Closet. Starring the very funny Whoopi Goldberg and the ever-youthful patriarch of film, Tony Curtis, The Celluloid Closet is based on the Vito Russo novel, and reflects on screen perceptions of lesbians and gay men, but always with a light touch. Music icon k.d. lang wraps up the movie with her rendition of Doris Day's 'Secret Love'. A.K.A. Don Bonus is Spencer Nakasako's self-portrait of a young Cambodian immigrant growing up in today's America. This powerful work won the Golden Gate Award, Best Bay Area Documentary at last year's San Fransisco International Film Festival. Hollywood Now is Karl Schederseit's semi-documentary dealing with European film-makers' struggle to make films in the shadow of the great American movie machine. Original film footage allows us an insight into the hidden life of legendary film-maker Orson Welles in the documentary Orson Welles: The One-Man Band. The Big Pink, directed by Kolin Schult is the real-life story of an alternative family globetrotting the world over a 25-year period.

In addition, this year's Fleadh boasts movies from around the world, including the best of contemporary cinema from Brazil. Included in this section are Perfume de Gardenia; Terra Estrangera, Walter Salle's film about a generation in crisis and a country unsure of its identity; Jenipapo, a film exploring a reporter's obsession with a charismatic activist priest; and Carmen Miranda: Bananas Is My Business. This entertaining mix of documentary and fiction traces the footsteps of the legendary Portuguese girl, raised in Brazil who rose to Hollywood fame. Rare snatches of film and interviews with Cesar Romero make this a must-see. Also hot from Cannes is the provocative drama Some Mother's Son which closes the Fleadh. This controversial Irish film, produced by Jim Sheridan and directed by Terry George, (who collaborated on 'In the Name of the Father' ), is set during the 1981 hunger strikes and contrasts the lives of two mothers and their sons. Look out at the Fleadh for the film's director and producer, as well as for cast members including the brilliant Helen Mirren.

Other Fleadh events include a full day's screening and seminars of the new work of Teilifis na Gaeilge; the ever popular Outdoor Cult Classics, which this year cover the theme of American paranoia in the 19SO's; the Fleadh Auction for the best in film memorabilia, and the New Fleadh Club, overlooking the river Corrib, which will be the place to hang out this July.

Born in Prussia in 1867 Kathe Kollwitz's works of social conscience are as relevant today as when they were first exhibited. Rejecting classical notions of beauty she. ably and powerfully expresses the simple beauty of ordinary people in her work Honest and dignified, her prints have enormous social responsibility, an achievement she was recognised for during her lifetime. The first woman elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts, she was forced by the Nazis - in 1933 - to resign her position, because they considered her work "degenerate". While Kollwitz's work is of enormous historical social significance, it remains equally significant today. Her work truly does transcend time and national borders. This exhibition, from a major private collection in California, has been organised exclusively for the Galway Arts Festival by Jack Rutberg, of Jack Rutberg Fine Arts, Los Angeles.

Jorge du Bon Aula Maxima, UCG

The sculptures Jorge du Bon hacks from wood have a primal directness that is as compelling as it is forceful. Evoking structures that celebrate and mirror our quest for the spiritual, the wood remains rooted in nature . Of joint Mexican French origin du Bon now lives in France, but his work has been exhibited all over the world. After studying architecture in Mexico he completed his MA at Harvard before further academic work took him to London and New York. His work has won many awards, including the Guggenheim Prize in 1981, and in 1989 he was chosen from a list of distinguished artists to produce a sculpture celebrating 200 years of the French Revolution. The prestigious site selected to show the work was the courtyard in front of Paris's Notre Dame cathedral. The pieces showing in Galway are representative of the main thrust of his work, forms reaching for the sky while remaining firmly fixed in the earth. His work is included in many major international collections, and this will be the first exhibition of this important artist in Ireland.

Joan Miro

Galway Arts Centre, Number 47 Dominick Street

The graphic work of Joan Miro presented in this exhibition represents a selection of lithographs executed over three decades, from the 1950s to the 1970s. Supplied by the Maeght Fondation, these 60 pieces are an excellent sampling of the numerous works produced by this most prestigious and prodigious of artists. By the time of his death in 1983 he was producing so much work that only Picasso among his contemporaries surpassed him in the quantity of his output. 1

Whatever technique Miro employs, and he was a bold experimenter in a form that already offered a broad range of processes, the results are always extraordinarily fresh. The brilliance of colour and variety of texture owes much to his awareness of the properties of the material on which the prints were made. The works in the exhibition which date from the late 1960s in particular have a bold intensity and richness unparalleled in any former work.

Perennial Heat

Arcadia Gallery, Castle Street. Corbett's Carpark These five Galway based artists are back for their perennial Galway Arts Festival exhibition. The landscapes of Jay Murphy reflect the form, shape and texture found in the geographic makeup of rural Ireland. Leonie King"s brightly coloured compositions achieve a harmony and balance through working over the rich colours. Siobhan Piercy uses screen printing to overlay collage-like iconographic imagery. The natural rhythm of land and water is the focus of Dolores Lyne's coolly meditative work. Using images of stone and organic surfaces Margaret Irwin's etchings deal with the structure of landscape.

His razor-sharp observations combined with an abundant natural charm earned him a coveted Perrier Award nomination at the 1994 Edinburgh Festival, and his strength as a performer resides in his ability to be at once disarmingly cute and shockingly direct. Numerous TV and radio appearances haven't dulled Glaswegian Bruce Morton's innovative and sublime style of stand-up. The (London) Independent reckon he is "about as close an heir to Billy Connolly as Glasgow has produced." Perrier Award nominated in 1992, he won the Edinburgh Critics Award for his acclaimed one man show. Sharing the bill with Bruce is Tommy T iernan, described as Ireland's fastest rising young comedian. Before heading off to conquer the Edinburgh Festival in August, these three excellent Irish comedians will be performing every day of the Galway Arts Festival in the King's Head. Tommy T iernan has gone from complete unknown to headling act in every comedy club in the country. The Sunday Times "highly recommended" him, and his recent appearance on the Late Late Show confirmed his status as one of our freshest comedy talents. Louth man Patrick McDonnell has been called • a one off original" by The Irish Times. His warm and subtle style has charmed and delighted audiences all over the country. No stranger to Galway audiences, Big Gerry Mallon has been resident MC at the city's comedy club since 1994. He's brought his deranged worldview to every comedy club in the country and has been described as a big, soft, cuddly hoodlum.

UPDATE

This year's Galway Arts Festival sees the addition of not one but two theatres to the city of Galway. Who would have believed this could have happened so quickly? The flagship of the 'Housing the Arts in Galway' project, the new Town Hall Theatre became operational last October and was officially opened by the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, Michael D. Higgins on February 1st of this year. It has enjoyed great success since opening, providing the public with a delightful venue and an impressive and varied programme.

The second theatre constructed under the 'Housing the Arts in Galway' project is the new Black Box performance space. To date, phase one has been completed at the Dyke Road site and will provide a large performance space that will eventually have an audience capacity of approximately 550. It will compliment the Town Hall Theatre by providing a flexible space which can be used for practises, performances, concerts, community arts, ceilis, conferences, tradeshows, exhibitions ... anything's possible! Phase two of the project will see the addition of a large foyer, performers facilities, administrative offices and workshops. Macnas, the internationally acclaimed theatre and spectacle company, will take up residence in the Black Box when this second phase is complete. However we cannot rest on our laurels just yet as we still need to raise £250,000 to complete phase two of the Black Box.
