The ties that bind can never be broken and the shocking events that bring Sal to a remote exile on Valentia Island are as unexpected as they are brutal. Frank McGuinness has created an intriguing heroine, a woman to be pitied and feared in equal measure. Her compelling story begs only one question; what would you do if pushed to the very edge? Galway’s Cathy Belton, one of Ireland’s leading actors, makes her long awaited Festival debut in The Match Box. Cathy starred in the 2014 film Philomena directed by Stephen Frears, opposite Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, and most recently appeared in A Little Chaos opposite Kate Winslet, directed by Alan Rickman. She also stars in the new TV3 drama Red Rock. The creative team includes set & lighting design by Paul Keogan, original music by Teho Teardo and sound design by Helen Atkinson. Frank McGuinness’ plays include The Factory Girls, Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, Carthaginians, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me and his Tony Award winning adaptation of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House.

Third World Bunfight

Exhibit B

Exhibit B is a deeply moving work created by South African artist Brett Bailey and lies somewhere between performance and installation. In a powerful critique of racism, 13 live installations examine the colonial policies and history of Europe in Africa. As spectators walk through Exhibit B to the sound of lamentations sung live by a Namibian choir, the audience gaze is unexpectedly returned. Collectively each scene confronts colonial atrocities and the plight of immigrants today. Described by legendary theatre director Peter Brook as ‘an extraordinary achievement’, this haunting work sets out to subvert a disturbing phenomenon, unpacking the histories and turning the notion of exotic spectacle on its head.

Choreography and Music by Hofesh Shechter

The Hofesh Shechter Company wowed Galway Festival audiences in 2010 with the spellbinding Political Mother. Their return to Galway with their new show deGeneration is a much anticipated and very exciting prospect. deGeneration is an evening of three works where the company’s extraordinarily talented young dancers tackle two creations from Shechter’s canon, Cult (2004) and Fragments (2003), the works that introduced his cinematic, smoky brand of dance to the world with a bang. Completing the evening is Disappearing Act (2015) adapted from an earlier Shechter work Under a Rock, and reworked especially for and inspired by the new dancers of the company.

The Dead School Maum By Pat McCabe Directed by Andrew Flynn

‘One of Ireland’s foremost contemporary writers.’ T h e G u a r dia n

By Sighle Ní Chonaill Translated by Macdara O Fátharta Directed by Diarmuid de Faoite Starring David Heap

Raphael Bell, is an old–style national school teacher who has devoted his life to upholding his school’s rigorous core curriculum. By the late 1960s, however, parents and students have begun to question Bell’s inflexibility on such issues as corporal punishment and mandatory school prayer. Bell attributes all such criticism to the baleful influence of television, rock music, and American movies. His rage finally finds a focus in Malachy Dudgeon, a first–year teacher who seems to embody all the worst features of the counterculture. The two are soon locked in a power struggle that can only end in disaster. As with The Butcher Boy, McCabe demonstrates his remarkable command of the vernacular and an uncanny ability to pinpoint the exact moment when ordinary minds take flight into madness.

Based on a true story, this compelling new drama dares to uncover little–known facts about a case that is still clothed in secrets and shame. In the Maum Trasna Valley in 1882, a family of men, women and children were murdered. In the aftermath of the brutal massacre, mayhem erupts. Is dráma láidir, tragóideach é seo atá bunaithe ar na dúnmhairithe i Mham Trasna fadó, a ndéanann fiosrú ar an scéal taobh thiar crochadh Mhyles Joyce I 1882.

Conductor John Wilson is a firm favourite with Irish audiences. Over this weekend he leads the National Symphony Orchestra in four orchestral masterpieces featuring two of RTÉ’s ensembles and stellar international artists, including cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Finghin Collins. Rachmaninov’s achingly beautiful Adagio, Second Symphony No. 2, and Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4 The Inextinguishable, provide opportunities aplenty for orchestral fireworks. Kevin O’Connell’s homage to Early Music, which receiving its world premiere in Galway, is a colourful tribute to the pristine sounds of the era before Bach, deliciously enhanced by the rich sonorities of a modern orchestra.

Patricia Piccinini Relativity Patricia Piccinini is one of Australia’s most acclaimed artists who has received worldwide attention for her startling sculptures and digital environments. Piccinini’s work examines the connections between science, nature, art and the environment. She creates an imaginative world peopled with families of charming and slightly unsettling creatures; mutants who are half–human and half–beast, baby trucks and humanised scooters who love one another. Her sculptures are familiar yet fantastical, a possible future species from a strange new world. Piccinini represented Australia at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003. She won Australia’s National Arts Prize in 2014 following the creation of her spectacular Skywhale which will also be seen at the Festival.

Varvara Shavrova Borders

Martin Healy Terrain

Varvara Shavrova’s paintings, drawings, photographs and video work are set against the longest border in the world between China and her native Russia. Along the seam of this vast expanse of land, the artist explores the metaphysical terrain of her own global nomadic life – from Russia, England, Namibia, South Africa, and Ireland to China. And it is through this meandering exploration that she investigates the power of borders themselves. Shavrova examines the lasting imprint that borders – physical, political, cultural, and historical – contribute to our notion of freedom and belonging.

Martin Healy works primarily with film and photography Ruminating on the point where fact and fiction have coalesced, the work considers the multiple conflicts and consequences of the human desire to harness the physical world. His work references the alternate histories and speculative futures described in late 19th and early 20th century science fiction which in many ways have prefigured the current realities of environmental crisis and the depletion of resources. Louise Bourgeois’ sculptures, drawings and prints have always maintained strongly autobiographical themes, expressing her own intense range of emotions. One of the most important artists of recent years, Bourgeois’ Autobiographical Series (1994), captures some of her deepest thoughts and memories, whilst 11 Drypoints (1999) takes these personal emotions into more abstract territory. Featuring some of her most distinctive motifs, from the pregnant woman to the cat, the work in these two series are clearly inspired by her obsessions and fascination with the human condition. French conceptual artist Sophie Calle joins with American artist Gregory Shephard to create a voyeuristic tour de force in what was her premiere video project. With America as the backdrop for this road movie, Calle and her partner Shephard head west in his Cadillac convertible to produce a real–life narrative of their journey and their relationship. Double Blind was shown at the Whitney Biennale in 1993, and subsequently at the New York Film Festival.

Fabio Balducci Upon receiving a series of photographs taken from an ATM security camera, Calle becomes involved in a perplexing fifteen–year investigation. She manages to steal three surveillance tapes, and interacts with strangers, bank employees, and a pawnshop merchant in an attempt to clarify the meaning of money, security, and the anonymous photographs. Foreign Bodies

An exhibition of artist’s books by Sioban Piercy. These are books in the broadest sense. Instead of pages of words, the artist has cut, folded and bound her drawings and photographs to create three–dimensional forms and fragile, ink–covered paper structures. While pushing the notion of a book to its limits, these works still reference all that books might connote – tools for comprehension, carriers of knowledge, maps to guide or offer explanations. The artist uses this context and the resonance between form, image and word to probe our self– understanding and self–perception.

Meta-Perceptual Helmets

Impressions encourage, promote and exhibit the best of printmaking in Ireland and has become a catalyst for creative innovation and experimentation. Established in 1988, it is Ireland’s longest running open submission print exhibition. Prof. David Ferry is the adjudicator and curator for Impressions 2015. Ferry’s work is held in many international and museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London amongst others.

If we have two eyes, then why is our vision so limited? Why do we have so little depth perception? Why don’t our two eyes offer us two different views of the world? Why don’t they allow us to look behind and in front at the same time, or sideways in both directions? Artists Cleary Connolly have spent several years developing an extraordinary series of helmets, that help us explore these and other mysteries of visual perception. Now, with Arts Council support they have completed the first five of these extraordinary helmets, on view at University Hospital, Galway for a limited time only.

All That Is

By Kellie Hughes

By John McCarthy Druid Debut

By Natalie McKinnon Druid Debut

Adapted by Kellie Hughes from José Saramago’s novel As Intermitências da Morte in collaboration with Olwen Fouéré, Alma Kelliher and Raymond Scannell. ‘If we don’t start dying again, we have no future.’ Inspired by José Saramago’s darkly humorous inquiry into our complex relationship with the grim reaper, three members of the creative team behind internationally acclaimed riverrun have been joined by Raymond Scannell to develop a new performance. Join us for a behind the scenes first look at Death at Intervals, where only by meeting death can you truly learn to live.

Rather than face life without Pádraig – a prince among bus drivers – Hammer makes–believe that nothing has changed. How wondrous, then, the transformation Hammer makes before our eyes. Despite the meddling of others, from a smoldering ruin he builds a ‘cottage’ that as greets us from the staging of many an Irish play. With Stage Irish John McCarthy creates a whip–smart knockabout comedy for our place and times.

Abi leads Jay to a derelict caravan in the woods. They are 16 years old. It is somewhere different to go from their usual drinking haunts and if they can’t be alone, they’ll at least meet the ‘Angel People’. But Jay is sure he is catching glimpses of a man with a dog’s face between the trees, and the more Abi explains it away, the greater is Jay’s fascination with what’s outside. Natalie McKinnon’s new play, All That Is, is a sinister, atmospheric thriller set in the wasteland of Scotland’s former industrial towns.
