COMPA CHOREOGRAPHY MICHAEL CLARK LIGHTING DESIGN CHARLES ATLAS Since forming his company 25 years ago, Michael Clark has changed the face of British dance and is renowned for legendary collaborations with bands, fashion designers and visual artists. Critically hailed as “British dance’s true iconoclast”, Clark creates work that combines his classical fluency with a twisted contemporary sensibility.
David Bowie, Iggy Pop & Lou Reed Photograph copyright Mick Rock 1972, 2009
Michael Clark Company’s new production evolves from Michael Clark’s admiration for the music of rock’s holy trinity, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, who worked in close proximity during the 1970s. Clark’s ensemble features dancers Kate Coyne, Melissa Hetherington, Oxana Panchenko, Clair Thomas, Benjamin Warbis and Simon Williams.
Commissioned by barbicanbite09 and Dance Umbrella (London), La Biennale di Venezia (Venice) and Dansens Hus (Stockholm) as part of European Network of Performing Arts (ENPARTS). A Midsummer Night's Dream undergoes a riotous re–working by Edward Hall. Devoted to authoritative, gender–bent spins on Shakespeare's works, the award–winning company tackles the play with typical gusto, capitalizing on its dreamlike qualities while never losing sight of its touching and wildly captivating plot. What makes this production sing are the pitch–perfect performances – the hapless Bottom, luscious Titania, and impertinent Puck – each and every one rendered with the passion and mastery of Shakespeare's ravishing language. “If there are better productions of these plays this year, (Midsummer and The Merchant of Venice) or even in the next few years, I will be astonished. Edward Hall's superb, all–male company Propeller proves again the value of a true ensemble and a director who treats Shakespeare's plays as if they'd just been written.” The Guardian

HAKESPEARE EDWARD HALL
William Shakespeare would delight in the compelling, audaciously cheeky theatre of Edward Hall and his award–winning company Propeller. Their adherence to a men–only policy onstage—a fact of the Bard’s day— along with Hall's mischievous, highly physical approach, sends up Shakespeare’s intricate tangling between the sexes. Propeller’s staging of The Merchant of Venice is a work that poses still–incendiary questions about truth, morality, and prejudice. The story revolves around Shylock, a Jewish moneylender caught between his faith’s strictures and the demands of Christianity. In this astute production, Hall and company pull off a miracle, revealing Merchant's underlying absurdities—the virtue in vice and vice in virtue—while delivering an unsparing rendition of the harrowing bargain at its core.

Cast Denis Conway, Peter Sullivan and Eileen Walsh Writer Tom Murphy and director Garry Hynes once again join forces to stage what is widely regarded as Murphy’s masterpiece. This searching, challenging and funny play deals with seven days in the relationship between Dynamatologist JPW King, a quack self–help therapist living in Dublin but born and brought up in England, and the mysterious Irishman, a despairing property magnate who seeks out King to help him sing like the great Italian opera singer Beniamino Gigli. This remarkable play, a magnificent starburst of language, ideas and stage trickery, will open Druid's refurbished theatre at Druid Lane where Tom Murphy’s Bailegangaire and Conversations on a Homecoming received their world premieres.

STEVEN GALLOWAY Exquisite and profoundly moving, The Cellist of Sarajevo shows how life under siege creates impossible moral choices. It is a story about survival, the temptation to hate and the refusal to do so, and the persistence of the human spirit in a time of fear and suffering. Steven Galloway is the author of three novels: Finnie Walsh, Ascension and most recently the international best–seller The Cellist of Sarajevo. Take a bow! The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world. The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth A5 billion a year. The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, for 2009 is A75 million, that’s about A1 euro a week for every household. So, at the end of your next great festival experience, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself! Find out what’s on at
