John is widely knowledgeable about the history of folk and traditional music and loves to sing songs and tell their stories. Each week John will tackle a different theme: songs of emigration; sea songs; love songs; Galway in song; Napoleonic songs; seannós in Irish and English and newly-composed songs. Taking inspiration from old images of the village create a mixed-media collage with artist Sinéad McKiernan. Saturday 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th November and 7th December, 11am-4.30pm WORKSHOP: The Claddagh Village in Stop Motion Galway City Museum is looking for local secondary schools to each nominate a budding art student for this 6-week animation workshop led by Edith Pieperhoff. Each week participants will develop the skills needed for stop motion animation, including research, developing a storyline, script-writing, model-making, set-design, animation and editing. Culture Night Friday 20th September, 5.30pm-8pm LECTURES: Social Conflict, War & Revolution in Co. Galway, 1913-1923 Following last year’s highly successful “Incomplete History of Galway”, the 2013 Culture Night event at Galway City Museum narrows the focus to the tumultuous decade which culminated in the establishment of the modern Irish state. During those years, Galwegians participated in war and political revolution as well as joining feminist, labour and cultural nationalist movements. Twelve notable historians will give short illustrated presentations based on their own research on Galway during the period. As it was last year, this Culture Night event is curated and presented by Dr John Cunningham of the History Department at NUI Galway. The museum will remain open to the public until 9pm. Adult
