The Swedish Flagship Kronan, the Royal Crown, was in its time one of the world’s largest warships. She capsized, exploded and sank off the island of Öland in the Baltic Sea in 1676. Of the 842 men in the crew only about 40 were saved. The wreck was located in the 1980s and since then is excavated each summer season by underwater archaeologists. It soon became evident that Kronan is an extremely important find – a Pompeii of the Baltic Sea. With its abundant equipment, its large company and its hierarchical social structure the ship was a society in miniature. Among the more than 30,000 objects that have been found so far are several musical instruments and other sound tools, intact or in fragmented form stringed instruments, wind instruments and percussion instruments are represented. There are, of course, many musical instruments preserved from the 17th century. What is special in this case is that the instruments from Kronan are part of an archaeological find-complex that can, moreover, be exactly dated. The musical instruments excavated from the Kronan wreck form the basis of a concert programme that also includes commentaries.Who performed music on board, for whom was the music intended, when and what did they play? The repertoire that the Ensemble Mare Balticum will perform is music that was in vogue in Sweden during the second half of the 17th century. The sources of most of the music are preserved in Swedish libraries and archives. Music and commentaries are accompanied by a slideshow that includes presentday documentary photographs as well as paintings and drawings from the 17th century.
Ensemble Mare Balticum (EMB) is a Swedish group of professional musicians that encompasses various branches of early music, from the late Iron Age up to the 1700th century and primarily from the countries around the Baltic Sea.The core of EMB consists of six musicians. When their programmes demand it, selected freelance musicians are added to their number. Within EMB the musicians also form separate constellations, for example a sub group focused on early medieval music, and a sub group, Heimdal’s Bourduner that play instruments and sound tools reconstructed on the basis of archaeological finds from the very late Nordic Iron Age. EMB – with its competence which is unique in Sweden, its uncommon constellation and creative work process – is a great asset to public concert activities as well as to programmes for children and youth. EMB was initiated by music archaeologist Cajsa S. Lund in 1989 on the basis of underwater-archaeological finds of musical instruments on the wreck of the Royal Swedish flagship Kronan that went down in the Baltic Sea – Mare Balticum − in 1676. EMB is Sweden’s only fulltime ensemble for early music. The ensemble is based in Kristianstad in Scania (South Sweden) and is administrated by the regional music institution Musik i Syd.
Ensemble Mare Balticum’s concert has been made possible by the European Music Archaeology Project (EMAP), supported by the Culture Programme of the European Union. www.emaproject.eu
